At Bamboo Sushi, we make every decision with the highest regard for this world and the people in it. From transparency in how we source our food, to reducing our carbon footprint, to enriching the communities that we live in. The Portland born Japanese eatery goes beyond sushi, extending to shareable plates, rolls, nigiri and a delicious wagyu burger, with cocktails and sake to boot.
Everything we ordered was good; first meal of the day, we’ve got: Miso Soup, Mini Kanpachi, Garden of Eden, Grilled Octopus, Crispy Brussels Sprouts, Dry mountain (cold Sake). I will come back for Kanpachi and Garden of Eden roll. Crispy Brussels Sprouts was almost too sweet while i was more craving for savory flavors.

Wow, I don’t usually go out of my way to review something, but both my wife and I loved the food so much that I had to. The food is GREAT. Service was friendly, and the photos of their fishing team was intriguing. It’s in the city so the prices are a bit expensive, but this is some of the best food I’ve had in years. Hats off to the chefs. We already devoured our food before we remembered to take a photo ha. Also almost everything was gluten free!

We are at U Village often and have tried most restaurants except Bamboo Sushi. Our adventurous-with-food 3 year old wanted sushi for dinner so this was the only option. Even at 5pm, there was a wait for a table, so surely this place must be good, right?
We ordered quite a few dishes to try including the Spicy Miso Soup, Tuna Crispy Rice, Agadeshi Tofu, Black Cod, Big Island Roll, Salmon Maki, Ikura and Scallop Nigiri.
The food, while presented beautifully, was good... In a mediocre way. I would consider this restaurant more a fusion or Japanese-inspired restaurant (catering to a less "diversified" palate) than a true sushi restaurant. Something just didn't feel authentic about the food we were eating, and all of it being expensive. I mean, $6 for miso soup that tastes just like the instant kind you can buy at your Asian grocery store.
There are great sushi restaurant in Seattle, most are on the expensive side compared to what's available in places like Vancouver, BC. But when you're spending $140+ on sushi, there are so many options (Wataru & Shiro).
Probably won't come here again unless it's the ONLY option, but in my opinion it was not worth the wait or the price. None of the sushi chefs were Asian (let alone, Japanese) and the majority of the diners were Caucasian, those are usually a good indicator of what the food/experience will be like at an Asian restaurant. The dining experience was pleasant, and our server was really nice though 👍

Mid , very mid besides a cool decor i just didn’t feel like any tastes were authentic for my roll, salmon was okay. But so was the rest of my food just okay, nothing really special except if you like to look fancy. Also wait time for a semi empty place was a little odd.

The quality of the dishes pleasantly exceeded my expectations. I maintain rigorous standards for sushi and sashimi. We ordered the nigiri set and chirashi, which consists of sashimi on vinegared rice. Both dishes were delectable. The fish was fresh, and the rice was expertly prepared. The cod, though slightly sweeter than my personal preference, was prepared quite well. Overall, I recommend this restaurant as the return on investment is excellent. I would happily return.

Bamboo Sushi at University Village is hands down one of my favorite spots—I’ve been there too many times to count! Everything on the menu is absolutely delicious, from the sushi to the small plates. The fresh wasabi that’s cut right in front of you is a must-try and adds such a unique, vibrant flavor to the sushi.
The quality and freshness of the ingredients always impress me, and the atmosphere is perfect for both casual meals and special occasions. While it’s a little on the expensive side, the experience and flavor make it totally worth it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, making every visit a great experience. If you love sushi, Bamboo Sushi is a must-visit in University Village!

Very expensive “fusion” flavors with lots of sweetness, fried rolls and other heavy ingredients, but love the sustainability aspect. Get the miso caesar and the crispy rice and don’t come expecting a traditional sushi dinner.

THIS SUSHI Y'ALL. I was not prepared! It is so, so, fresh, so succulent, so so so SO good. I ordered take-away for the first time yesterday but will definitely be back in the future. I was very impressed with the service, presentation, and quality of the sushi.
The Nigiri King Salmon, served yakumi, with orange, olive oil, lemon zest, sea salt, was especially delicious. Like buttah in my mouth, holy salmon it was so smooth; I didn't know sushi could taste like that. I only wish they offered temaki as well!

Love, love, LOVE this place. It's an hour away from my home but I go here when I can because I can order virtually anything on the menu. The items that DO contain gluten are very clearly labeled. Every staff member is educated about Celiac Disease and everyone knows how to avoid cross-contact between gluten free and gluten-containing foods. I'm always medically safe here and confidence like that is such a rarity for those with food restrictions. The service is always fantastic.

This is the spot for sushi! Their signature spicy edamame is a must-try, packed with bold flavors. The specialty rolls are creative and delicious, with something for everyone. And don’t leave without trying the sesame brownies for dessert—they’re the perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal!
Best service too! They will ask at the beginning of the service if you have any food allergy! Really appreciate the inclusivity

Our faves are the cauliflower, Garden of Eden, and the scallop nigiri with yakumi. My 3yo tried almost everything and had an incredible feast! She loved the Friday the 13th roll and the sockeye tartare, and both kids enjoyed the edamame and miso. We had a great family dinner!

Came in while doing Christmas shopping after being away in Europe the last month craving more healthy food typically unavailable in america. I won't say Bamboo Sushi was a huge disappointment but it's definitely not the most "relaxed" place. We ordered our food and the crispy rice tuna came out literally one minute after ordering it. The rice was way overcooked and it made me wonder if the sushi was already pre-made. We got them" garden of eve" maki next ..... now, this was a big wow! The spicy tuna wasn't as spicy as you'd typically get, the edamame was way under steamed and the kapa maki tasted really old?? Old cucumber???? Overall, was a bit disappointed but when you realize American food culture is "quick and out" ..... you can't expect much better! Would likely come back again "if" in the area and hungry for sushi!

Omg I’ve never had so much salt for a dinner in my life. The edamame was way over salted, the chicken was grossly over salted. My husband could hardly taste his sashimi because the soy sauce was super salty. We asked if they had low sodium which they didnt. The sunset roll was so spicy it overpowered everything else and it was hard to enjoy it. The service was great though. I told my husband he might not recognize me with a swollen face after dinner. :(
$180 sushi dinner, it was awful.

Definitely get the green machine - best sushi roll in the city. Crispy rice is also very good here. Service is always stellar. Prepare to wait a bit if you go on a weekend night. Delicious cocktails as well. Tons of seating in here, with a cool little outdoor patio for warmer days.

We got the "Friday the 13th" rolls, spicy edmame, crispy garlic tofu. The Friday the 13th rolls were pretty decent! Edamame was really yummy as an appetizer! The crispy garlic tofu was really yummy and surprisingly the portion size wasn't too big or small! I'd come here again next time to try their other items!

If you like deep-fried food, Bamboo Sushi has good deep-fried dishes. Deep fried seems to be their specialty. It's extremely greasy for my taste.
I did not like their sushi or sashimi. I actually didn't even finish it. I took the fish home to my cat. He didn't eat it either. He actually seemed offended that I even offered it to him.
In summary - If you're going for deep fried, great spot. If not, go elsewhere.

"Certified sustainably sourced seafood and sushi, plus Japanese dishes in an airy, modern setting," is how it's marketed and we found it to serve unexpectedly good Japanese in the middle of the University Village shopping plaza. Good to know we were eating seafood that was sustainably sourced.
The first thing that hit us was very comfortable air-conditioning that made life bearable on that particularly hot day.
We ordered chicken karage and the miyatake mushrooms for appetizers and both were eye-brow raisingly GOOD. Two healthy size whole mushroom were seasoned deliciously and cooked to perfection: meaty, firm and juicy, not soggy. The sunset roll had the promised heat, well the spicy tuna roll had what seemed to be a more flavorful gochjang based kick.
The shrimp tempura was amazing -- it's better is gluten-free so perhaps it was rice based? But whatever that combination the tempura batter showed up having as much flavor as the meaty, tender shrimp inside.
My favorite was the octopus carpaccio, and the fried capers in the sauce really won everyone else over.
The prices were a little higher than I would've liked but if that's the price for sustainably sourced to seafood, I'm happy to pay it; and the food was definitely worth it.
To top it all off our server Kayla was fantastic. She also was very informative about K-pop concerts. I was dining with two teams who had come down from Canada to catch the Ateez concert at the Tacoma Dome; Kayla had been to a couple of K-pop concerts down there so she was able to give them the 411 about standing in line and other important details based on experience.

Great atmosphere but the food has a long way to go. Overall, it is quite expensive. For the high price, you get small portions of mediocre sushi rolls.
My daughter grossed out on the California roll and stopped after 2 pieces. My Big Island roll was puny for the price and basically only tasted the lemon. We both agreed that the best part was the miso soup, which is just the typical average miso.
My kid had to go to Starbucks to get the fishy taste out of her mouth after eating there.
We won't be back.

I never cared for Sushi, I am a vegetarian and I don’t get the taste profile of Sushi BUT this place changed my opinion completely and made me a regular with one single item: Green machine, it is the most delicious and complete dish I’ve ever had, the texture, the taste, the simplicity! It’s to die for! Vegetarians go for it!!! Learnt how to use those wooden sticks just because I loved this dish. Two green machine per person and that’s all you’d need. Checks all the boxes. Just amazing; and that cauliflower appetizer is pretty good too but it’s taste is a bit similar to green machine so I’d suggest only try green machine first and then maybe the cauliflower one another time.

The nigiri/sashimi quality varies - sometimes the fish tastes fresh, other times it doesn't. Their crispy rice is really good but their rolls are not (usually drenched in different sauces to mask the skimpy portions of fish). I like some of their hot food items.
The worst part, however, is that they charge $6 for miso soup. SIX DOLLARS. That's quite literally insane.

We were walking around for dinner and saw this place, review seem decent and the place look nice. So we tried the set $120 seemed like a good choice. It looks great. But I didn’t like any of the roll. It’s so so, not matching the price. I eat slice and been to other sushi place that has some spice that kick. But this one, it’s too sweet, even spicy tuna was sweet, no hint of kick for me. Maybe for others. Sushi and sashimi was alright. Not bad. But roll, nothing special for this set. But I don’t know if I want to go back, because if the spicy tuna doesn’t have any hint of spice , I don’t know if anything else would be good.

Food:
Good quality and presentation. However, for 40 dollars the chirashi was thinly sliced compared to large amount of rice put in the bowl. Felt like I was paying more for presentation than anything. Same goes for the 2 rolls ordered, near 20 dollars each for presentation focused rolls with average filling to rice ratio compared to other local sushi spots.
Service:
Probably the low point mainly because it was not a busy time, only saw the waitress during seating, serving, and still had to wave her down just to get the check. We never got a water refill during the 25 mins of waiting for the meal.
Atmosphere:
Lots of seating, with outdoor seating available, clean.
Overall:
Good quality and presentation. Overpriced for the amount you paid for with slightly below average service. But should not even be surprised as it is just the usual gentrified priced sushi restaurant.

Came here while out and about in UVillage - the service was very friendly and the atmosphere was good as well!
In regards to the sushi, we had the chefs choice nigiri, honey wasabi chicken, spicy edamame, & the hoki poki roll.
The items were yummy, however since there’s so many phenomenal sushi spots around seattle, I have had fresher and softer tasting fish. The presentation of the rolls and items was definitely wonderful though.

My partner and I recently dined at Bamboo Sushi, and we enjoyed the overall experience.
We started our meal with a classic spicy Tuna Roll, which was fresh. The rice was well seasoned, and the tuna was tasty.
Next up, we indulged in a selection of Nigiri, featuring five pieces of fish selected by the chef atop bite-sized mounds of rice. Each piece displayed the chef's skill and dedication to quality.
The Spicy Edamame added a kick to our meal, perfectly balancing the flavors with its subtle heat and savory seasoning. It was a refreshing twist on a traditional favorite.
The Hoki Poki was a treat, blending flavors of Hawaii with the freshest ingredients. The combination of fish, avocado, and tangy sauce was simply divine.
To accompany our meal, we opted for warm Sake, which elevated the dining experience to new heights. Served at the perfect temperature, it complemented our meal beautifully.
Overall, our experience at Bamboo Sushi was a great experience. Their attention to detail, the quality of ingredients, and fast service created a dining experience to remember.

After calling and confirming that there would be room for the 5 of us, we arrived to a hostess that didn't seem to know we had called. After waiting to be seated for over a half hour we get in only only to see half the tables were unoccupied on the side they put us on. The waitress looked overworked, so we tried to make it easy. I didn't get my chirashi bowl until my whole family had finished eating. For 40 dollars, I was hoping for a better selection than salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Some of the fish in the bowl had a strong fish smell, making me think that the fish was either left out for a while or a few days old. The fresh wasabi I ordered came out weak, and I think it had been sitting out for a while. Overall, very disappointing experience, we had been here a few times and enjoyed it. I don't think we’ll be going back, I don't know what happened to this place.

It was just getting busy and the host looked awkwardly like they didn’t want to seat me and my friend. It was quite noisy juxtaposed against white paneled wood. We were seated at the bar as a best option which I enjoy because I love it as a watch tower. I saw the head chef frustrated and scold another chef. Seems like this place opened very recently.
Happy hour menus were suggested to us. They were a disappointment. But what saved the entire meal was the ribeye steak w fried onions and mushrooms. It was cooked perfectly and divine.
I ordered poke and ceviche and two orders of the chef hand rolls. There was almost no fish in any of those dishes. And the flavor wasn’t waking up any of my senses. I hate how poke is a hot trending word but know one understands what it is.
That was not poke it was a cucumber salad w 5 tiny cubes of fish. That’s was not ceviche but a cilantro salads 5 cubes of fish on it. They both tasted yummy but just weren’t the thing that the menu lead me to believe.
This restaurant is called a sustainable sushi restaurant. The thing that’s sustainable was that they really don’t use fish in their fish dishes.
I grew up in Hawaii and Japan so if you are looking for a Japanese sushi spot I would not recommend this place. If you are looking for a fun place to get drinks and rib eye then this place is great!
It’s noisy so I wouldn’t take a date here either.
Best wishes bamboo sushi, I think there is room for some customer service training and some updates on the menu/ kitchen staff needed to survive the competitive restaurant industry.
If you want to know what poke is go to the food land grocery in Hawaii and get a 1/4 lbs of each of the pokes.
Also poke is not sustainable. It’s a treat in Hawaii and that’s where it should stay. Using words like poke to sell salads is offensive.

Food was good. However, service was not that great. We ordered a lot of food. The food does not come out all at once, so dishes are arriving at different times. One would think they drop off food and take away the empty plates… NO. They barely bussed our table. Maybe 1-2 times the server would remove 1 empty plate. But there were SEVERAL still on the table. At one time, the server dropped off a new dish, looked at all of the empty dishes and walked off.
Our bill was over 500.00. They charge premium prices, they should provide premium service.

Amazing sushi. Lots of wonderful different rolls to try and majority of the menu is gluten free. Where this restaurant looses points consistently is very poor service. For the price you would expect better service. Every time we have been there it's hard to get anyone to respond to even basic needs. Today brought this up to our waitress and she was nice but her response was i have been responsible for 8+ tables. Place was not that busy tonight. Will be a while before we come back.
Service has gone down even more and so has the quality of the food. Seattle has way too many better options.

Clean space. Brittany was a very welcoming and hospitable hostess. Ty was dutiful as a server, with a nice low key sense of humor. I got the cauliflower, which was out of this world with an orange sauce glaze. The spicy tuna roll was ordinary, but it was a happy hour roll, so I didn't expect much. I'll likely go a different route next time. The Little Ume mocktail was tangy and different, I dug it, but only got it because they were out of all their ciders. The restaurant was spotlessly clean, but almost too antiseptic, but again, it was 4pm on a Tuesday, so it's unfair to truly expect atmosphere. For more reviews, see my Insta (a) cheapeatssea.

Came here for lunch during restaurant week, I was a little hesitant about the fixed menu but I'm glad I tried it. The flavors were fantastic, and they were exploratory but still familiar enough to be delicious. There were a lot of little details done right, from having the salad leaves evenly coated in dressing, to the perfect thickness of the meat and fish slices. You could tell a lot of care was put into the food at every level. The waitstaff was friendly and approachable, and it seemed like they enjoyed what they do. All in all, I was a little intimidated by the menu since I'm not really a foodie, but it was a rich experience that reminded me of how good a meal can be.

This is one of my favorite places for sushi and I take all my friends who visit Seattle to this restaurant!
Food: Their food is amazing here, and you can't go much wrong ordering anything here.
Price: It's a little pricey compared to the average sushi bars around town but if you're visiting the town and want some good sushi, this is the place to go to!
Parking: This restaurant is located at the University Village, and there's lots of parking here. It also has good bus connectivity and close to the light rail station if you don't want to drive
Ambience: it's very romantic and comfortable. Not a place you'd probably want to go to for a quick bite.

Best sushi in Seattle! Phenomenal service. Recommending this spot to all my friends and family. Will surely be returning in the coming days!

Very slow service. Might as well order 90 mins in advance and then head over to this place. Made me wait for 75 mins for a average roll. Not repeating. Not recommending.

Sushi was okay and plates took 15 minutes apart between our table of 3 friends. That puts a damper on our girls dinner
Miso soup was good

Bamboo sushi is a staple for date nights and great place to enjoy both fresh sashimi snd prepared roles. We tell people to get the green machine and rainbow roles. The hoki poki box entree is amazing. The miso soup and the edamame are great starters. Last time we were in we tried the Chirashi bowl as well which was great. The service at the bar is really quick and although we haven’t indulged, I hear their cocktails are good as well.

Are Seattle prices worth paying for sustainable sushi? A question for the ages.
(Okay who am I kidding, if you care about the "sustainable" part then you clearly have enough money to do this. =D)
So then, good sirs and gentlewomen, let us address each other like the proper elites we are and forgo any discussion of the prices. Let us also, in the spirit of trusting the good USDA to do their job for once, assume that the sourcing of the fish is swift, accurate, and of course, sustainable. Let us just consider the taste of the sashimi served, as I would normally do.
And to that I say: This restaurant chain is not only dedicated to sustainable seafood. They are also dedicated to utilizing the salt of the entire Pacific, and it SHOWS!
I mostly identify as a temporarily-embarrassed Fort Wayner, so let me use some Fort Wayne terms for a moment: Honestly, this place reminded me a lot of Tolon. There is great food in here, but the sheer amount of salt ruins it. In contrast, their yakumi (nigiri & sashimi condiments) is super in-the-background, to the point where I question if it was ever really there. Some may say that is the point. I say Haru is rolling in its... money. Rolling in its money. The yakumi is what makes that joint so much more alive and well.
Speaking of Haru, the kara-age at Bamboo Sushi also makes a great contender to the tatsuta-age from the FW place. That is to say, it is really great... if not for the sauce that tastes like not enough mustard dunked in too much mayo, where the mustard is constantly trying to make itself known in the most obnoxious way possible, yet the mayo's sourness is the only taste that lingers around. Yeah, you get the pattern by this point.
Still, the silver lining is that Bamboo Sushi knows enough not to put salt on EVERYTHING (unlike a certain joint mentioned in this very review). Being a fresh-fish joint - and the fish is very fresh - you can still have a great meal if you know what to avoid. As a bonus, they also guarantee that all of their catch is free of gluten! Go figure!
Really, Bamboo Seattle's only fault is that it is in dire need of a saucier. However, I don't remember seeing any fish that was sourced from the vicinity of France, so maybe they're just revolting against that system in their own little way.
To end on a positive note, that matcha panna cotta - served with raspberry and pure milk powder crumbles - was one of the best Japanese-inspired desserts I've ever had.
TL;DR Avoid anything with sauces.

The food was average at best.
The service was OK.
The atmosphere is non-existent as this place has no character. For this price point, I'd expect a better restaurant. This kind of dining at a dollar sushi restaurant for the price of a fine dining.

Sushi is very basic, and extremely expensive. I was hoping at least service would be good. Unfortunately, they were extremely slow and server was coming up to me and asking if I’m ready to pay every 3 minutes. Would not recommend this place.

This was our third time at this restaurant for my partner and I. We had made the reservations after an awful experience at a different sushi restaurant that left us unsatisfied.
The reason I enjoy this restaurant is the quality of the raw fish, there is never a "fishy" aftertaste. Another reason our experience was so enjoyable this time around was our wonderful waitress Misa (apologies if I spelled her name wrong.) She was attentive and incredibly sweet and kind. She truly made the dining experience more enjoyable. If I could give stars based on an employee, I would - she's such a gem!
Back to the meal, it was very delicious. We're always satisfied with everything from the presentation to the taste. I do admit, it can be pricey, but it's worth it for the quality.
Thank you for being so wonderful!

I was very impressed by how they handled a food allergy in our group. The manager personally came out to discuss the ingredients with us, and personally served the allergy- free dishes. Food was delicious too!

I was hoping for a new go-to sushi place, but the food was bland and it was incredibly loud. My partner and I got a roll and a soup dish. The noodles were not a good texture and the sushi roll looked unappealing. The servers were nice, but several of them seemed new and we had a couple of awkward interactions (asking us personal questions, reaching across me to grab a soy sauce container). Honestly from the sound level alone I won't be back.

Clean and neat restaurant. The family noted the sushi was delicious (I'm vegetarian) and fresh reasonably priced. Food and drinks served family style.
Almost everything is guten free except a few items that are clearly labeled.
Waiter was accommodating and knowledgeable about menu items.
10/10 recommend

We went on a Friday night, and man it was busy. The queue was out of the door. Took about 30 minutes for us to get a table. Not the end of the world though, we went and made ourselves busy and then came back.
I’m not a huge sushi guy but this place is definitely top tier and the prices reflect it. The only thing though - I ate every last bit, and still didn’t leave full. I’m not sure if that’s normal with sushi but it’s kind of crazy to me that you spend about $80 per person and you still leave hungry. I had to run in to QFC across the road after finishing to get something more fueling.
The atmosphere is nice, but it’s definitely a large restaurant trying to work within the confines of a small building. The tables are practically on top of each other, and in most cases, I think you’re going to end up sharing a table with strangers.

Nearly 100% of the menu is gluten free and safe for Celiacs and they are very allergy-aware. I recommend the fried cauliflower!

I came here on a rainy Seattle night with my girlfriend and her dad. The atmosphere was very nice and clean. The booths separated the tables pretty well and I didn’t feel like I was too close to other tables. The sushi was really good, we got some special rolls and nigiri. The “Friday the 13th” and Salmon nigiri were really good. We also got an apple mock tail that was very yummy. Overall it was a great experience and would definitely come back.

Ordered
spicy edamame - They were delicious if you like spicy.
Green machine with a bunch of sauces - All of them hit the spot. I like the option where you can customize to your preference and they also give extra sauce if you ask. Their jalepeno sauce was lit and additional chili oil elevated it.
Service was quick and on point. Also tried a bunch of mocktails- they were good. Giving 4 stars as we found it a bit pricy but good for once a month or two konths kind of a deal.

I visited Bamboo Sushi on a slow night. The sushi bar offered a salmon nigiri special with 4 different types of salmon.
Since the night was slow, the chef was attentive and explained the various salt & acid combinations he used per nigiri. As a foodie and a “home” chef who just enjoys making a mess in the kitchen, I felt incredibly fulfilled with this experience. I would highly recommend visiting at a slower time to try the sushi because it makes you appreciate every grain of rice.

Service and decorations are good, but the food is very disappointing, the black sesame brownie has nothing to do with black sesame, basically plain brownie with a sprinkle of a few sesame, the roll is ok but overpriced, you can have much better rolls in lots of sushi places with half of the price they charged, won't go again

While prices have remained pretty much the same the size of the rolls is half of what it used to be!!! One roll disappears in seconds.

Nice, fresh sushi. Most of the rolls are somewhat fussy, and they do not offer many simple rolls, if that's your thing. Standout item on the menu is the king salmon nigiri and the Big Island roll. I do think that this restaurant is overpriced; there is equally good and lower-priced sushi available around Seattle. Also, there are some Japanese staples missing from the menu, such as salad with ginger dressing or seaweed salads. This might be because of the restaurant's commitment to sustainability, which I want to find admirable, but sometimes find annoying.

Don’t order to go, the $60 meal wasn’t even close to their usual standard. The soup was cold and spilled, and the hamachi had gone bad, and everything was packaged in a rushed, careless manner. Awful.

We sat on the outside patio because we are COVID conscious. The service was wonderful! Our server recommended the Green Machine, which was heavenly. Most of their dishes are gluten-free, which felt safe to eat there as a member of our party had celiac. Definitely going back!
