Sushi Kappo Tamura offers an exceptional sushi experience. The sushi here is incredibly fresh and amazing, probably best I’ve ever eaten. The staff was excellent and friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. Everything we had was extremely fresh, and I look forward to returning. A special shoutout to Christie, who took great care of us while we were there. Highly recommend this spot for sushi lovers!

Hands down, the best sushi in Seattle. They have high-quality fish and it’s pricey but well worth the price if you enjoy quality sushi. Upscale and modern setting. Great ambience. Service can be slow at times but always professional and courteous. Parking is tricky since there is only street parking. Reservation is recommended.

I had a really great experience dining solo at the omakase counter. The overall quality of the fish was delightful, and I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The oysters were delicious, and the chawan mushi was exceptionally yummy. My only critique would be to lighten up on the soy sauce as a lot of the nigiris were on the salty side and a bit overwhelming the balance. The rice was a bit mushy and overcooked throughout more the nigiri courses. However, the fish itself was spectacular.
The service was excellent—friendly and prompt. I opted for the premium sake flight, which was good, although I wish there had been a specific sake pairing for the omakase. Nonetheless, the flavor profiles described on the provided card were helpful.
The highlights of the meal included the Hirame with shiso, King Salmon from Bristol Bay, the Oysters appetizer, and the Chawan Mushi. Every fish was delicious; but the smoked Sockeye salmon stood out, being a bit heavy on salty soy.
One significant downside was the otoro, it was heavily torched so most of it tasted cooked. I would've preferred to have it lightly seared. If you look at the photo you'll see it's completely cooked from the torch, so biting into it was not tender at all, but rather chewy, like cooked fish chewy.
Besides these, they do a great job on the fish itself.
Overall, I would return to try ordering a la carte next time, hoping for better rice preparation then. And asking for them not to season it but leave it on the side, (if I do omakase here again)
Finding parking was initially challenging, but I eventually found a small lot across the street near what seemed to be a vacant building and paid for parking there.

We came here for our anniversary and we highly recommend this place for special occasions.
Food:
We got the Omakase with wine pairing at the sushi bar. The chef did an amazing job preparing the sushi! The ingredients were super fresh and everything was so delicious. We had several "favorites" : toro, salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp, and uni steam egg.
The sakes paired worked really well with the dishes, although we wished that they included more as we finished the sake 2/3 of the course.
Ambiance:
We love the decor, it was very modern with some intricate lighting. The use of wood made this place feel very relaxing.
If you are looking for a place for special occasions and you are okay spending 150+ per person including sake pairing, this is one of our favorites!

The dining experience at this restaurant was excellent. We enjoyed a sushi omakase at $150 per person, with all the nigiris being fresh and delicious. Our chef, Mel, served us with great care and courtesy. The paired sake enhanced our meal, and our hot tea was continuously refilled without us having to ask. The entire experience was seamless. A 20% hospitality charge was already included in the bill, making the omakase very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

The best sushi I've ever had! Quality and service is above and beyond. Highly recommend if your in Seattle, it's a must go! Chawanmushi is incredible, it's not sushi but it's the only place I know of that serves it, definitely try if you haven't had it before. Black sesame ice cream is to die for.

We celebrated our 10th anniversary here at Sushi Kappo Tamura and it was an amazing experience dining with them. We had an omakase with 2 appertizers and 12 pieces of nigiri. All of the pieces are fresh, some of them are well marinated or topped with special seasonings.
Yuzu & Yogurt Panna Cotta is a must, super refreshing, and creamy 🥰

Just got off the phone with some woman that was very sarcastic and frankly rude as hell. I was just trying to place an order. Told me in a short and quick manner that I should have planned better for tonight. How rude!
Visited 3 months ago
Called early about placing a order for new year eve. Was told to call the day off. When I called 1 min after they opened, they said no more orders. The lady that answers the phone was very rude. Not sure what is going on there but it sounds like they need to have the front staff have some training since I had 2 different people give me two different answers. Now, our traditional sushi for NYE from the same place for 7 years is a bust. It’s a shame that the these people cause issues. Support them during covid. If the manager is reading this, these people are going to cause it loyal customers.

Our party did the omakase experience. It was delicious and their chawanmushi was the best we've ever had, but the meal felt very incomplete.
They ended on the unagi, which was by far the most savory bite of the night, and made the end of the meal feel very abrupt. We've had omakase in the US and Japan, and all of our prior experiences end with a sweet bite and tea and/or tamago. Our entire party left still feeling hungry and unsatisfied, but we didn't want to spend more money at the restaurant because we already spent $150pp, not including drinks and service charge.
Overall, I would absolutely return and order a la carte, but I would not come back for the omakase. Cocktails, sake selection, and service were great.

Everything was delicious! The miso green bean salad, the wagyu and all the various sashimi’s. Our favorites were the black cod (seared), toro, and red snapper! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

It pains me to write this, as the food and the service provided by the server who helped us were amazing.
On the other hand, the host who greeted us tonight was extremely unpleasant. It felt like we were a bother to her and the restaurant, and not sure if there was a dress code but I am sure she did not approve our outfit. I know we arrived 40min prior to closing and, as a restaurant General Manager myself, I understand that the kitchen might be starting to close. But the way the host staff handles and passes the message to the guests, sets the entire tone of the dining experience. She made sure to tell us that it was almost closing and that she had to ask the manager if they could sit us. Then she comes back and says that she can sit us but we would have roughly 10min to order. I considered leaving but my boyfriend was really hungry and we were both craving sushi and we stayed.
While talking to the server though, he said we had plenty of time and that we didn’t have to worry about it.
So I would highly suggest management to properly train their staff.

The nigiri sushi is really good quality and quite creative with exotic fish from Japan. The individual rolls are a OK, but portions were on the small side. Best deal might be the 3 course prix fixe, but it could’ve included miso soup.

I was disappointed after the reviews. Average all around. Nothing bad, but nothing stands out too. As someone visiting from NYC I was disappointed.

Wow! What a delightful, beautiful find. I’ve had Sushi Kappo Tamura on my list of places to go for a while and finally made it happen. Just walking into the restaurant made me excited… the scent of yuzu was prominent, lighting was perfect, and everyone (staff and guests) seemed to be enjoying themselves. It was a great vibe! I had the Rising Salmon Roll, Black Dragon Roll, miso soup with kabocha, and hijiki salad. Everything was fantastic! The Black Dragon especially impressed!! I will be a regular here from now on for sure.

For a sushi restaurant, the rolls were underwhelming and frankly overpriced. How do you make a salmon roll that does not taste like salmon, etc. the hot dishes were very good and the staff were very friendly and attentive.

I had a rather disappointing experience with the bar omakase. My advice is to not come in expecting a traditional (or typical) omakase, where you start with your fellow diners on your meal at the same time.
We arrived on time for our 7:30pm reservation, and it was obvious that the other parties were already a few courses in. We also got seated at the end of the table, far away from the main chef responsible for omakase. Another chef was stationed directly in front of us, primarily making table and to-go orders. Perhaps as a result of this setup, our chef didn't make me feel welcome and attended to. The chef kept making courses for the party next to us, leading to us having to wait for a long time at times for our next course. Our meal felt choppy and lacked cadence, which in my opinion is one of the most important elements of an omakase meal. The chef made our sushi, put them on a plate and handed it to the chef next to him, who then put our sushi on our plates. So our food was touched by two different people unnecessarily in my opinion. This other chef did not say a single word to us or even look us in the eye the entire evening, by the way, which was very off putting. Our main chef was busy talking with the party next to us the entirely evening, making me feel extremely ignored and disrespected.
Food wise, the garnishes (such as shiso) and sauces on the white fish were mostly too overpowering. Did not care for the geoduck, but it was my bad to not specify it upfront. The chutoro was excellent, and the ikura was truly exceptionally fresh albeit way too salty from the marinade. They torched the otoro, which I was skeptical about at first but surprisingly enjoyed it - it tasted almost like a steak. Our version of the $130 omakase did not include uni sushi, mackerel, and tamago, the last of which I have come to expect from a typical omakase. We did order uni a la carte, and it was good.
Our check was almost $500 after drinks and gratuities. I did not feel treated as a valued customer however, and will not return for an omakase, or ever. If you must try their omakase, I'd recommend making a reservation as early as possible so that you are more likely to have more attention from the chef.

This is hands down the best sushi I have ever had in my life, the quality is sublime, and all of the rolls have been crafted to perfection.
Eating here, you can truly appreciate the ingredients used to make each dish!

I want to open this review with a blessing of gratitude for the restaurant owners who had the foresight to insulate the interior for sound. I was able to sit opposite my husband and hear every word he said without hearing everyone else in the dining area, and that alone filled my heart with joy.
The cocktails are expertly crafted. We started with Negronis and finished with Manhattans, and my God they were smooth. These cocktails tasted like the house bartender had achieved a Zen state of mastering spirits.
Despite both of us being vegetarians, we reluctantly ordered the asparagus in miso butter as a starter. We were ready to stab one another for a bigger portion of this dish. I have lived on this planet we call Earth for fifty years, and I have never experienced asparagus the way it’s prepared in this kitchen. Don’t sleep on that butter lettuce salad, either! But the mustard greens. Sweet Baby Jesus, those mustard greens. We had the kitchen prepare them sans tuna, and I could have eaten ten times what came to our table.
The vegetable rolls are perfection. You might look at the offerings and think that they’re basic, but I am here to tell you that I’ve been to many a sushi restaurant and no one has come close to achieving that balance of flavor.
My husband had to tap out for dessert, but he did try a bite of millet mochi with sweet Azuki beans. It was beautiful—and not too sweet! I can think of no higher praise.
I’m an adult and I enjoy doing adult things, and this restaurant for me is how dining out as an adult should be. Arigatō, Sushi Kappa Tamura. Arigatō.

This was some of the best sushi I have ever had. We were served at the chef's counter and were served the Chef's Omakase. Every single bite was an experience and presented some of the freshest and heavenly flavors I have ever experienced. There was not one time I felt the need to flavor the nigiri with any type of soy sauce or additional flavoring. There was one cut, the Engawa Hirame, that blew me away in particular. I consider myself a sushi veteran and I personally have never tasted anything so delicious. On top of the great food, we had flawless service in a contemporary beautiful setting. Thank you to everyone who made the night what it was, and I highly recommend anyone who is a sushi addict to find a time to visit this gem.

Honestly treated and made to feel like we weren’t good enough to be there. Sushi was just ok. No traditional regular starter dishes. Peppers were too hot and kind of weirdly out of place. “ Super yummy roll “ was only so so. The worst though was getting a check that took another 20% WITHOUT ASKING ME to pay higher wages and retained all of it so the tip is actually NOT included. Just raise your prices if you can’t afford to pay your staff well but this felt dirty. Won’t go back and they are probably just fine without us because as my son said they seem “too big for their britches”. Also. The service wasn’t worth 20% but they don’t care because it doesn’t benefit them to offer better more friendly service. Really disappointed.

I’ve been here several times. Sometimes for regular dinner and sometimes for omakase. It has always been consistently good, but my most recent omakase experience was stellar. I like that they claim to focus on sustainable fish. The service has always been great. The drink selection, especially the sake list, is robust.

Truly exceptional sushi. This is on the Eater 38 list for a reason. Absolutely recommended! A few comments:
1. The dining room is fairly small, so I recommend reservations.
2. Restaurant is several miles from downtown, so you will need a rental car or ride share to get there.
3. The food is very expensive ($100+/person). However, the ingredients and expertise needed to make high quality sushi are very expensive too. It is absolutely worth it for a nice occasion and I considered the full dining experience to be a good value.
4. The gratuity is included in the check!

This was the best sushi experience I’ve had in Seattle. Not only is the five course meal exceptional and perfectly balanced, it’s the quality of the fish and the above and beyond team at Sushi Kappo Tamura that make this restaurant stand out.
The locally sourced fish is very fresh & delights the tastebuds. Buttery king salmon melts in your mouth; the cod and fresh crab in their bed of chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard) left me dazed and contented. The albacore paired with mustard greens was whipped together by a magician - and the nuttiness of the sesame dressing tied it all together.
The seared mackerel nigiri was the star of the show, closely followed by the black cod - whose creamy texture, perfectly supple layers of meat, and masterfully glazed surface triggered the most wonderful and visceral childhood memories of an LA Japanese restaurant that had made a similar dish for me near the Biltmore Hotel nearly 20 years ago. It’s incredible how food can transport you to another time and place, no?
The team’s genuine compassion and attention to detail is what adds to the charm of the warmly lit, clean interiors of Sushi Kappo Tamura. Even the bathrooms smell wonderful (they have scent dispensers that smell of citrus & frankincense). When you enter, the chefs nod, smile and greet you.
Executive chef Taichi Kitamura’s heritage dating back to a family of restauranteurs in Kyoto, paired with his mentorship under THE Shiro Kashiba, lend him grace and excellence when creating a symphony of flavors for delighted guests. The food is prepared with pride and an exacting level of expertise. Serving bowls, brought over with care from Kyoto by the Executive Chef, paint joy in the eyes of interior design & ceramics lovers everywhere.
We were instantly set at ease the minute we sat down. Edward T’s personable style and genuine enthusiasm for the food at Tamura is infectious. To make this experience even more transcendent, manager Kristy & Edward heard about my childhood memory & generously shared the cod belly to sample. It was delightful - warm, delicate, mildly sweet, & moist - the cherry on top of an excellent 5 course meal.
To end on a sweet note, I highly recommend the housemade red bean mochi (none of those sad, pre-wrapped, stiff abominations that come frozen out of the fridge and semi-frequently haunt your run of the mill sushi spots). No. This mochi is tender, freshly made, & flash fried to create an incredible chewy texture that melds flawlessly with their in-house red bean mixture. Not too sweet, a little savory. Their butterscotch and chestnut crème brûlée is inventive and frankly delicious.
We came for the 5-course meal and left with a new feeling of levity. Because, after all, shouldn’t food and great service leave you feeling a little lighter?

My most favorite sushi restaurant in Seattle! I am always impressed by the fresh ingredients and great service! The presentation of each dish shows the thoughtfulness of the chefs. The knowledge of a long time waiter, Edward, is amazing and appreciated. This restaurant is on the pricey side so I usually go for special occasions, but when I do go, it’s worth every penny!
Most recently, we ordered the 3 course dinner and had Bara sushi as our main dish. It was so fresh and beautiful!

It was nice when you used to be able to walk-in, but for good reason SKT has grown in popularity so I would recommend to always book a reservation or you may not get a table. It has a great mix of traditional sushi items, as well as unique offerings that we can't find elsewhere. We used to always order à la carte but recently tried the omakase and the slight variations are awesome.

I brought my Japanese family to this place because of the solid reviews and we all got the omakase. Too bad it didn't live up to the hype. There were a few items that were good, but the chef's selection of fish was mid and almost insulting to anyone who chooses the omakase. If you're going to serve the cuts of fish that anyone can get from a supermarket sushi tray then don't bother with an omakase. The service was also weird and not what you'd expect when paying over $150/pp. Overall a very unimpressive experience.

I walked into the restaurant to pick up my order. No one is there to greet me. Some guy in the back tells me to wait a couple of minutes. Everyone proceeds to stare at me while I wait. Finally, the hostess comes out and hands me my order without confirming it’s for me. No other guests were in the restaurant. It’s basic principle to acknowledge and welcome your guests in. This left a poor impression on me and I will consider dining at a friendlier restaurant next time.

Had 3 course meal. The selection of Nigiri for the 3 course was pretty lame, as you can see from the picture. The roll tasted the best. What a shame considering the price point.
I later found that the other guests are getting much better sushi plates without rolls and noticed the subtle differences between the description of sushi in course menus.
Sushi combo that can be also selected as a part of 3 courses: "seven pieces of Nigiri sushi and a roll chosen by the chef"
Five courses: "Chef's selection of 7 pieces of Nigiri sushi"
Who can understand the sushi selection for the latter is more premium? If I knew the selection of sushi combo, I would have ordered a la carte. I ended up ordering Ikura, Hotate and Otoro additionally, which were fantastic.
The lesson learned: make sure to check the chef's selection when ordering. Don't assume the sushi selection would be the same across all the menus.

Came here for a special anniversary dinner and we did the omakase experience. Pretty small restaurant and typical omakase bar seating.
Service: service was good but not great. It felt like I had only seen our waitress once or twice over a period of 2.5 hours. My tea was empty for a good portion of the meal while looking around while I am totally okay with that, paying that much (in my eyes) should warrant better service.
Atmosphere: friendly, casual, nothing snoooty which was appreciated. Chef was very nice and concerned with us throughout the meal.
Food: food and quality was good. Very solid sushi and it all tastes very fresh. However, I do wish it was a bit more creative but maybe that is not what they are going for which is fine. If you are looking for fresh, traditional sushi, this is a great spot but I also don't think you need to pay for omakase to get that.

Update: I had my birthday dinner, also took my day for her birthday dinner. We ordered “five”. We both liked chawan mushi, deluxe sushi, and lychee lemonade, and Yuzu panna cotta.
The service was excellent. The bill includes 20% service fee which I have no issues. However, it is explained in a piece of paper as “ living wage charge” which I did not think it was really appropriate. It should simply say “ service fee”. When you run your business, why don’t you want to pay living wage to your employees in the first place? What is wrong with paying their employees living wage? This note gave me a bad taste.
Quality Japanese food. One of the best in town. Everything is tasty. Great back ground music and service. My favorite place for sure.

The food is good, but the atmosphere is much more distracting that I expected and the staff is constantly on the move. If you're looking for a quiet place to have a conversation, avoid this restaurant.
The menu uploaded here hasn't been updated, so it will be charged about $10 more for each item than the picture shows.
It's also worth noting that they charge a flat 20% gratuity in the evening and tax on gratuity.

Hands down the best sushi I've ever had. Try the geoduck - you won't regret it. Everything we had was incredible, from the Black Dragon Roll, to the halibut tempura, to the spider roll. Perfect place to celebrate a special occasion. And our server, Edward, gave us super helpful tips on how best to order. We will most definitely be back.

Good sushi and nice friendly chefs and staff. Good service. Not 5 stars because omakase could be improved a bit. Sushi rice too vinegar-y. Too much sauce over the fish at times. Not as wide of a selection. Street parking only.

Went for the Omakase. Food was yummy! And the service was really good - they told my mom happy birthday like >5 times it was very sweet.

A little tough to get a reservation but wow it was worth the wait!!
Super fresh sushi; how do they get that perfect texture?!?

I liked the miso black cod, black cod nigiri, and unagi nigiri. The salmon nigiris were okay

This is such a cute little place tucked away where I wouldn't expect. The food was also amazing with a wide variety of fresh options everyday. They have a daily menu everyday with different specials too.

We did the chef's tasting with sake pairing and it was amazing! Everything the chef sent out was delicious, and we tried things that we would not normally order. It really expanded our palate! Service was outstanding.

Simply, one of the best sushi experiences in the United States. Nuff said.

Came here twice. Both times the sushi were all really fresh and the appetizers are all unique here (none are your typical ones that you can name). Also great service.
Only cons is a year ago the omakase came with real wasabi while rolls come with horseradish wasabi but this year it was all horseradish wasabi. Also this restaurant is not kid friendly. No real high chair and no diaper changing stations in the bathrooms.

My husband and I attended a private event here last night that the restaurant shut down for and it was PHENOMENAL. My husband, a sushi connoisseur, said it was the best he's had. I don't eat fish but the veggie roll, tempura yam and salad were stellar. We lived off of Lychee Limeade since we aren't drinking right now and those were amazing. Our friend said his Old Fashioned was the best he had ever had! The service was top notch and everyone was so welcoming and happy to be serving us. It's an experience I won't forget and we'll be back many times in the future. We're so thankful to have discovered this place!

Ok sushi, rushed experience and not worth the effort of booking

The sushi was real good and real good for the price! However, the atmosphere wasn't amazing (though looking at the chef seats it could have been - reserve there if atmosphere and service are high priority for you). The waiter was knowledgeable, but we definitely got not as good service as some of the folk who looked more traditional (we have dyed hair, etc). We did not like the sake selection when we were there, but the lychee margaritas are incredible!!

For the price point, it was ok. The temperature of the fish and rice was such a turn off even though the quality of their sashimi was good. I did enjoy the mustard greens and the specialty sushi rolls.

The thing is, the sushi omakase was good (not great: sloppy cuts and some rubbery sashimi), and the sake was good. The problem was we didn't order sashimi omakase and sake pairing. We ordered chef omakase and green tea. But the server confused us after we asked him to not serve us shellfish and made it sound like the sake was complementary. We didn't really finish the sake and wondered when the next course would come. Instead we got the bill. $400. Kinda felt like a used car salesman was our server. Oops. We asked where our order was, but we kept being told "not to worry" and we're "in good hands". Whoops.

Went here on the recommendation from a talented chef friend and his gluten free partner. The restaurant is beautiful, love the wood accents. The food is delicious, some of the best sushi I’ve had in Seattle. I liked trying some more traditional plates like the Braised Snake River Farms wagyu beef skirt konabe with maitake mushrooms and yuchoi, the Rougheye Rockfish (Neah Bay, WA) kama nitsuke with hari ginger and fresh gobo, and the Shishito Peppers blistered and sprinkled with sea salt. After that I tried a flight of nigiri and really enjoyed the Otoro and Black Cod Belly Grilled. Overall a great night with delicious food and attentive service all in a cozy atmosphere.
*the restaurant does add a 20% living wage surcharge to the order but additional gratuity is not expected.

Great but sushi prices are per piece. Don't sit anywhere near the door when it's cold.

First visit to the restaurant with omakase experience at the bar.
Mixed experience with the food. The appetizer, and two extra nigiri that were ordered, hokkaido uni and unagi nigiri, were some of the best experiences that lived up to its price. Wonderful quality seaweed that literally melted. However, rest of the twelve nigiris which were supposed to be the main were more than a disappointment. Definitely not worth $120 omakase but more like rotating sushi bar in some small rural town. Main complaints are the fish to rice proportion, just the taste of the fish for some of them, and the sushi rice. Never had a high grade sushi restaurant with such poorly cooked rice. Fishes, mostly white fishes like red snapper, yellowtail, etc, tasted blend compared to the quality expected (assuming half of the reason is due to the amount of rice). Worst was the thin, seared sockeye salmon that tasted like nothing. Raw shrimp and gooey duck were just okay.
We've been to Japan for diverse sushi experiences. In Seattle, we get $150-200 per person omakase experience couple times a year because we love sushi. It would be unlikely for us to return for a second experience here.

Can’t get any help at front desk. When I get help the lady is rude

Came here and stood in the front waiting for any acknowledgment. Wait staff walked by and looked at us. Nothing. Hostess was talking with her friend at a table and ignored us. So after 10 minutes we left. Better places to spend our money.

Incredible sushi of course, but if you have a chance for the oyster, definitely get those - you won't regret it. The interior is crisp and warm. We tried almost everything on the menu. Also got to see Chef Shota drop in at the bar for a bite, which was pretty exciting for this fangirl. The only thing was that the wait for food was a bit long (each time we put in a sushi order), I think it was a busy night, but we weren't in a hurry so still had a very enjoyable experience.

Atmosphere and service was very friendly and they include tip so you don't have to calculate and so their employees are paid fairly. Had the albacore nigiri and spicy salmon roll, both were delicious and perfectly tender
Visited 3 years ago
I had a chance to visit recently and I enjoyed the entire experience. The service was awesome. The Mustard Greens and Washington Albacore was awesome as were The Black Dragon rolls. They also have excellent dessert if you don't overdue it through the whole meal. The prices are reasonable for the quality. I think it would be a fun place to bring guests from out of town.

The food and cocktails are good, but a bit pricey. No dress code, the restaurant is clean and relaxing. For the sushi, I recommend uni, ima, hotate, anago, chutoro, masaba. For ippins, I recommend kanpachi kama shioyaki, chawan mushi. Definitely recommend the cocktail Shiso Mojito!! Super good!

Only one problem, it's very difficult to find a parking space.

This was far and away the best sushi experience I've had in Seattle. Everything was fabulous, including the wait staff, but the miso black cod and Hamtastic Roll were exquisite standouts. Finishing with the Black Dragon Roll was sublime!

Really good sushi. The service was pretty impeccable. Really elegant space with lovely plate presentation. I had the black dragon roll and a sushi combo. It was all well executed and clearly of the highest quality. My only gripe is that it felt like something was missing? Maybe in the rice. Some of the nigiri pieces were underwhelming especially given the freshness of the fish. Overall it was great. Just lacking a little oomph.
