If I could give them a 1000 stars I would. This is the best place in the world. The service is absolutely outstanding. They care about making your dining experience perfect and they sure do. They care so much for the customers. Our waitress made me and my boyfriend feel so special with giving us a dessert on the house!! The food is also so good. Freshest sushi. Presentation is beautiful as well as the Kani salad I loved it!! The restaurant overall is so pretty and has such a relaxing vibe from the soft music to the lighting. It’s decorated amazingly. I have been going here for over a year and it’s so good I love it i definitely recommend !

Went out for our anniversary dinner and decided upon this place. We like places that are tucked away and definitely new to us. We're not a couple that likes attention, so we definitely didn't advertise our occasion. Service was amazing, sushi was delicious, and the staff was super kind. Without a word, a plate of cheesecake was placed on the table and 2 forks. Made the evening even more special for us. Thank you so much again for tonight! We can't wait to visit again.

We went on a Sunday right around 1230. It wasn't busy and we were seated very quickly.

Service:
*Our server, Alyse, came over and brought over complimentary edemame, which was nice.
*She gave us ample time to look over the menu.
*Honestly, Alyse is probably the best server I've had in a while. She was super attentive, very friendly, knowledgeable, and went out of her way to ask the chef what a certain fish was for us because we weren't sure what it was. She even pulled up pictures on her phone and described tiny details to keep an eye out for. Talk about going above and beyond!

Food and drink:
*We ordered the avocado salad, which was good, the avocado was very fresh
*The firecracker shrimp was amazing
*We got the boat, option number 2
*The seaweed salad (that comes with option 2) was very good, and an appropriate portion size
*The boat came with three rolls, and the chef gave us an additional roll on the house, which was super awesome... and was actually my favorite roll on the boat!
*The sashimi was fresh, and I really liked the two tunas we got
*We got the apple sake, which was so yummy! I like that you get to take the bottle home so you don't feel like you need to drink it all while you're there.

Ambiance:
*The music was interesting lol it was calm music, and then all of a sudden, I heard someone rapping about Mario and Wario 😂 I think it might have been someone sitting near us, but it was pretty funny anyway
*The restaurant was nice and clean
*Bathroom smelled good and was clean
*There was a cute little family there as we were leaving, and they were singing happy birthday to the kid really quietly along with our server. It was so sweet!

Overall, I'm extremely happy with this experience and look forward to coming back.

This place was a pleasant surprise. In town for work and wanted sushi. Was hungry so debated going to an all you can eat sushi place but decided to give this place a try. Great service, great food, and the rolls were the largest I have ever seen. And they even use real crab mix instead of imitation crab! To top it all off, complimentary edamame when you’re seated and cheesecake bites at the end. And all at a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend and come back!

Wow just wow. Nothing to complain about. Easy in, easy ordering, easy everything. The place is clean and efficient. As soon as you are seated they are bring you a free appitizer. As you can see from the photos. They do not seem to provide small sushi parts. Overall the place is very nice and I would come back again and again.

Fantastic atmosphere, service, and food. Highly recommend! The staff was super friendly and attentive, and we were served some free appetizers along with free cheesecake. Honest to god, best cheesecake I’ve ever had in my life, and I typically don’t like cheesecake. Highly recommend this restaurant!!

I am hohum about sushi but finally found a place that makes me want to come back again and again. I'm hooked on their great flavors and wonderful service. Bonus - cheesecake desert is something I'd expect at a high end fancy restaurant. It was yummy.

Had lunch here at Yama today. They give you edamame at the table to begin. We had the mixed salad, sweet potato sushi, tempura shrimp sushi, veggie spring rolls and split the fire chicken entree which comes with rice. The service was great and the food was delicious! I would definitely eat here again.

Very disappointing. Horrible service, the young woman who was supposed to be our server only came over to us once. Never refilled our drinks, spilled some of our soup on the table when trying to put it down, and was seen walking around on her phone. Mind you this was a thursday night with barely anyone else in the restaurant. Also this was the worst sushi i’ve ever had, plus it took forever to come out. They advertise real crab, but it’s just canned crab, tastes so fishy. I’ve had better sushi in landlocked arizona. But the only good part of this experience was the older asian woman who seemed to be in a more managerial position. She got us spring rolls on the house for the wait, and brought us a free slice of cheesecake since it was my birthday. She constantly apologized for the service, and truly made us feel welcome. I wish she had a better staff that matched her level of customer service. Unfortunately would never dine here again. I can’t believe this place has such great reviews.

I just ordered takeout from here for the first time and was surprised by how good the quality of food is. You can tell they use fresh ingredients and it’s crafted with care. The sushi doesn’t fall apart and is super delicious.

The wait was significantly longer than I was told it would be, but they gave me an “on the house” soup which I believe is their way of recognizing the long wait.

Honestly the food is so good it was worth the wait!

Seriously one of the best experiences. They are very accommodating. My server was Alyse and she is so sweet, professional, and quick.

I wish I took a photo of my food but I had miso soup, Philly roll, and spicy tuna roll. And it was presented nicely, delicious and well made.

Early in my visit I was waiting a while for a seat and they apologized with a small serving of edamame which is my FAVORITE and two tiny chocolate eclairs for desert.

I love this place. This is now my favorite sushi go-to spot. I won’t go any where else unless I’m out of town.

Best sushi, environment, and staff on the Peninsula. It's never too busy. All the rolls have been amazing. We usually get the combo #1 boat and use rewards points for another 2 roll combo. It's not AYCE, but it's worth it to bypass that. We spend about the same and get better far better food and service. It's worth a try if you've never been, and we are repeat customers. You won't regret trying Yamachen.

Great food, their combo specials are their best deals. I’ve tried Volcano and other mediocre places like Poke Sushi.
This place does not disappoint, their trays are professional and unique with great tasting ginger and wasabi.
They are hard workers that care about that craft. The crab is also not Krab, sorry SpongeBob fans!

My experience at Yamachen Sushi was excellent! Not only was my sushi well prepared and a nice sized portion but the service was amazing! We ended up receiving a few dishes on the house and it truly enhanced the experience me and my two friends had last night!

Absolutely my new favorite restaurant to eat at. I can't wait to bring all my friends and family here. The waitress was very sweet and like a wonderful mother. I went here with my boyfriend and this has been the best date night we've had in a couple weeks thanks to our waitress and this wonderful restaurant. The food was fresh, flavorful, and worth the price. I had the Hawaiian roll (now my new favorite roll) it was made perfectly and the chicken ramen which I thought the waitress was joking when she said it was a big portion, she wasn't, but it tasted amazing and wonderfully seasoned (perfect for a cold night and soothing). Also, we got treated to the cheesecake and it was perfectly creamy. Even when unsure, just give it a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised how wonderful this place is.

My first time here I picked the Lunch Combo Pick 2 with house salad. The salad was a little light but the ginger dressing was really good. I picked the spicy california roll and Alaska roll to test out. Both rolls were really good quality. I actually stopped eating sushi for awhile because of the bad quality I was being given. I will come back and order sushi again from this place

Walked in an hour before closing (8:30) on a Sunday night, three adults and one toddler. The service from start to finish was SUPERB. Warm, attentive and friendly. The food exceeded expectations, too. Plum wine, miso soup, Yakisoba for me. Husband and SIL got a roll each, they threw in spring rolls and cheesecake on the house(what?!) We’ll definitely be back and bring more company along!

This was a definite authentic, style Japanese sushi experience. All sushi was fresh, and delicious. The Miso soup was great. The gyoza, egg rolls, edamame were too. Finally doing a review and this was our 4th visit here. Im from Hawai'i and sushi is a comfort food of mine. I miss the island food, and finding a decent sushi place has been a challenge here in VA. We have been very pleased with this establishment! It's not exactly like Hawai'i - but it's as close as I've gotten to it since leaving 2 years ago.

There's ample parking, and the decor is nice with lots of seating. If orange is your color? You'll love sitting in this restaurant lol! We have been met by this amazing waitress every time we've visited. She has stellar customer service, and presents herself so well. She's diligent and very kind, we absolutely love her. The restaurant stays cool, and that has been welcomed since we're currently in summer and the heat has been brutal.

On this particular visit, we ordered the kani salad (delicious!) And the boat combo A. They gave us edamame on the house, which we ate with soy sauce and it was lovely. The boat that is pictured has an extra roll that they gave to us on the house as well. It was delicious and we were extremely grateful! The food is well prepared, the portion sizes are awesome, we never walk out hungry. We always have cute bentos with our left over pieces! The price for the quality and quantity is awesome. Especially in comparison to the other sushi restaurants we've tried, where quality was definitely lacking and they're much more expensive.

They also have the utensils packaged. It's cute, sanitary and it comes with a large napkin, chopsticks, a fork, and a toothpick. The essentials, and a nice touch with the fork for those who aren't quite comfortable with chopsticks.

Our food always comes within a decent timeframe, and the presentation is lovely here. Drinks are refilled accordingly and every time we have visited, they have always given us a cheesecake on the house. We love the freebies, but would honestly come here without them because we love the food and service! Always grateful nonetheless!

I do also want to note that the bathrooms are neat and clean. I appreciate the attention to detail and the cleanliness of this establishment. It's a big thing for me to eat in a clean place and the bathrooms are no exception. Too often do I come across restrooms that are dilapidated and filthy. It really grosses me out to know that I'm eating somewhere that doesn't prioritize cleanliness, so this place checks everything off the list for me!

Excellent customer service. I ordered the ramen, and my 8yo ordered a California roll and miso soup. She was struggling with her chopsticks, and our server came over to her and helped her out, explaining that even her 10yo struggles with chopsticks. The food was delightful, with chilled edamame being served while we decided what to eat. We will definitely be returning.

It’s so hard to fine decent sushi around here. The sushi here is FANTASTIC. You can tell the rice is fresh, the seafood being used is fresh and the flavor is soooo good. The ramen is even authentic. I love this restaurant so much. The chef gave us complimentary appetizers and dessert. They truly value their customers here.

Best sushi on the VA Peninsula! Wait staff is so sweet and accommodating. They always offer free edamame as an appetizer, free cheesecake slice for dessert, and sometimes free eggrolls too! Like seriously what other restaurant do you know that gives away so much free food? Their sushi is superb. Love their special rolls. So so good. They also are never packed and zero wait. Usually only a couple tables of people. I don't understand why they aren't more busy all the time.

We really loved this place. It was a pleasant surprise to find this restaurant. We went out to have a light meal and the hostess went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Her recommendations of plum sake were spot-on.

I went here tonight alone to get some sushi. The service was extremely slow. My waiter delayed coming to my table to greet me & ask for my drink & also bringing the drink back to the table. Initially, I let that slide but I became frustrated after I ordered my appetizer & an entree at the same time and my waiter did not come back at all to my table for 25 minutes. In that timeframe I wasn’t asked would I would want a refill on my drink or given an update on when my food would be ready. I got up to the let workers know that I would be leaving because of poor service. I still didn’t see my waiter while all of this happened, a cook explained to this woman my situation. When I told the lady I was leaving she acted confused as if she didn’t know why I was leaving, then she said no one checked on me because I was watching a video on my phone, then she blamed it on it being a busy night and they were working on it. So they knew I was waiting while I watched another couple at least have their waitress check on them twice in the 25 minutes I waited with no one. This lady talked to me more on my way walking out of the restaurant than I was talked to while patiently waiting at my seat. I went to another place to eat.

The food was excellent and our waitress was wonderful. When she found out it was my wife's birthday she had the chef make us some special spring rolls with eel sauce and it was in the house. Then after we finished dinner they brought out a slice of cheesecake with a candle in it. The dinner was excellent and my wife gave the sushi two thumbs up and she is a connoisseur!

This location is one on the best YamaChen’s in Hampton Roads! The restaurant is clean, the rolls had generous portions of fish and didn’t fall apart. Our waitress was so personable, outstanding customer service.

We have stopped. They are on our way from Virginia Beach where we did not want to have our dinner but that’s a different story.
I would choice was based on Google reviews and we are so glad that we have trusted those reviews.
The place looks very humble from outside, but it is absolutely amazing inside. Very romantic atmosphere great colors and lighting. Very soft music.
And their Rolls are fantastic!
The girl who served us did a superb job. Even arranged a cake with candle when she has learned that it’s my wife’s birthday.
Should have asked for her name.

Wow just wow. Nothing to complain about. Easy in, easy ordering, easy everything. The place is clean and efficient. As soon as you are seated they are bring you a free appitizer. As you can see from the photos. They do not seem to provide small sushi parts. Overall the place is very nice and I would come back again and again.

On our way back from Virginia Beach to DC, we had our lunch here and although my husband is not a fan of sushi, we all loved it! The food was delicious, the place is super clean and the staff are very welcoming and friendly! It was awesome!

Go here for sushi. If you’re in this area, I definitely recommend getting sushi here. The wait staff is very kind and attentive. We had an excellent meal. The fire shrimp and shumai appetizers were excellent. Definitely get the earthquake and spicy tuna roll are excellent. Going to make this place a regular.

This sushi place was absolutely fantastic! It was super clean and well decorated. But, not only was our food amazing, our waitress was on top of it! She provided terrific recommendations, checked in on us in an appropriate amount, and provided tasting of some items on the menu we wouldn't haven't ordered.
If you're looking for sushi, this is your spot!

This place is delicious! I've been multiple times and every single time the sushi has been fantastic. I highly recommend this place.

The servers are always super attentive and many of them have recognized us each time and come over to say Hi and ask how about our kids and other things, even if they aren't serving us. It's nice to feel like they appreciate you coming to their restaurant. This place really is an excellent experience.

The dining experience was incredible and Susan, the waitress, was an angel my daughter said. We had 2 rolls, miso soup and a Kani salad. We were gifted three spring rolls and three cheesecake bites. I wish we lived in the area to be able to come often.

Without a doubt the best sushi place in the area, better than most places even in Richmond.

This place is always fantastic. I've dined in before and had takeout. Everything that's supposed to be hot is hot and everything that is supposed to be cold is cold. It's fresh and delicious and they almost always throw in a freebie, whether it's edamame, spring rolls, or a slice of cheesecake. Definitely one of my favorites!

We haven't taken the time to dine-in since COVID. Since then, they've renovated and redecorated the restaurant. We usually picked up take out, and I'm so glad we decided to sit down and enjoy a meal. We came in around 3:50 pm so there was no wait, and were seated in a boot towards the back of the restaurant, so it was cozy. I had Pinot Noir red wine and my husband ordered Bud Light beer. They don't have a separate menu for spirits like Bourbons or Whiskey, but they do offer beer, wines, and sake. We split the Shrimp Tempura appetizer (which I forgot to take a photo of) after we finished the free edamame with soy sauce. For dinner we split the Super Duper Roll and it came with veggie spring rolls on the house. I love that they always offer plenty of ginger and fresh wasabi. We also split the cheesecake with chocolate sauce on the house for dessert and it was delicious. By 4:30 pm the restaurant got busier as more people came in to dine in, but they didn't have to wait to be seated. Our waitress was nice and the kitchen staff were friendly, thanking us for coming in as we left. I'm glad we chose to dine in over take out, and I'd encourage you to come and sit down for a fresh meal and great service.

Amazing experience and good solid sushi. The best part was the service. Susan went above and beyond and we will absolutely return not only for the food but for how well she treated us.
The spicy tuna was great. It was spiced well and was still a lump tuna. The chicken teriyaki was outstanding too.

Stopped by with client for a meal. Service was very good and the place was clean. Started with a few appetizers and then various rolls...got so in to eating that forgot to take pictures of the rolls till after stuffing ourselves! 😅 maybe next visit will remember to grab some shots.

My friend and I get together one day a month and eat lunch here. They are always friendly to us. We are regulars, so they remember us when we walk in. They know what we are going to order to drink and bring it to our table as soon as we are seated.

Coming from AK and CA, we have not found exceptionally amazing sushi in VA. Went to this location several time s(maybe 5-7 times). First visit was wonderful and the sushi was pretty good for what we've experienced in this area. Yamachen also gave us free edamame and cheesecake dessert (but turn down because we don't like cheesecake). Second time, was also a good visit, but server was not around and drinks were never refilled. After that, the sush was not consistent and the last time we went, the fish from two rolls and seaweed salad smelt bad so we sent it back. When receiving the check, the 3 items that were sent back were still being charged. I figured they had forgotten to remove it, but when I asked them to fix the charges, they were hesitant and felt that I should pay since the food had been made and served. This obviously made me irritated and I told them we didn't eat any of it and the owner said he doesn't know what was taken back, but then acted like he was doing me a favor by removing the three items we didn't touch. Since then never been back.

If confused about the 3 stars, it's because usually the sushi is decent, but not amazing after our first visit. The service is usually good as well. We never expect complimentary food but enjoy the gesture when given. It just sucks that the place is INCONSISTENT and we prefer to go to Kero now.

I have been here multiple times in the past year. Consistent service, very pleasant staff, and reliable food quality. They have always offered or just plain delivered additional food items "on the house".

Very refreshing to have such a reliable place to choose for lunch or dinner.

I have not seen them busy, and they are always clean and inviting.

It was all small portion but I have never been to a restaurant where I was treated this good ever. The lady who served us was professional and nice.

Fantastic Japanese spot for the family. They may not have a huge assortment of sushi options but they do have a full menu which includes ramen, something a lot of other Japanese restaurants seem to be missing.

The service is top-notch! I've always had a phenomenal experience with the staff there and they are the primary reason we keep coming back.

Holy smokes I’ll tell you, this place is amazing. We chose this place for my son’s birthday and they were so courteous to us it was crazy. The food was to die for. We will be returning customers for a long time to come. My son says to give it a million stars but I can’t.

Ordered the pork ramen, golden shrimp roll and a couple other of the cheaper rolls..The ramen was DISGUSTING..had a milky broth with 5 slices of pork that were 90% fat with very little meat..The golden shrimp roll had a slimy sauce and rice covering it..The only thing barely edible was the "on the house spring roll" ..I didn't even finish a quarter of the food for fear of getting sick..The staff is nice.

Ok, so I've lived and traveled the world and until tonight, NJ had my #1 sushi place in the country and Europe....tonight we tried Yama Chen for the first time and holy cow! The freshest, most picturesque, delicate, big and delicious sushi I can ever remember eating, unforgettable really. I ordered 4 rolls (2 special) and a gyoza. They gave us a piece of cheesecake on the house and somehow even that tasted fresh, homemade, light and delicious (NY style too)! We found our new #1 sushi restaurant 😋
