Our visit to Miyaki Sushi and Grill was underwhelming. The food was mediocre overall, with each dish falling short of expectations. The miso soup was particularly disappointing, as it lacked the rich, savory umami flavor that comes from a proper dashi base, making it taste bland and uninspired. The Unagi Don was passable, mainly because it’s hard to go wrong with teriyaki sauce, but the unagi itself was a letdown—it wasn’t firm, which took away from the texture and overall enjoyment of the dish.

The bulgogi was another miss. It tasted bland and lacked the bold, savory flavors you’d expect. Even after asking for sesame seeds to enhance it, the dish still felt flat and uninspired.

The service was decent—nothing to rave about, but no significant complaints either. The restaurant itself was averagely clean, which didn’t leave a strong impression one way or another.

Overall, the experience was lackluster. While it wasn’t entirely bad, there’s a lot of room for improvement, especially in terms of food quality and flavor.

While I am not the MOST frequent customer to Japanese steakhouses, I have been to quite a few. Miyaki was hands down the absolute BEST I have ever had. The staff was polite & professional; the food was perfect. If we lived in Williamsburg, this would be a definite add-on to our list of restaurants to frequent.

Went about a year ago after our first time as a ladies group was so wonderful, but the 2nd time we went we sat down and they turned the grill on in front of us and out crawled a Roach, then another, then another. We told the waitress. She casually swept it up,but we did not stay to eat and will Never be going back to eat

In from out of town on vacation and came here after a nearby restaurant had no room for walk-ins, and we are so glad we did. The service was excellent. Everything was briskly bussed from our table when we were finished with it. We never had to ask for drink refills. Our server was very prompt and courteous. Eddie, our hibachi chef, was funny, skilled, and prepared our food perfectly. He even convinced my picky eater to try the salmon with the soy and teriyaki glaze after my son refused it in favor of keeping it plain. The manager came and checked on us at the end of the meal as well. I was very impressed with our overall experience and would highly recommend it to anyone.

I wish I would have read the reviews first. I recently visited this location with my family (party of 4), attempting to try a new restaurant in the area. The appetizers were barely okay, and the fountain drinks tasted funny and we never got refills. Additionally, I didn’t enjoy my Hibachi Noodles dish. It had a strange aftertaste and I only took a few bites before deciding I couldn’t finish it. I let the waitress know - she looked at me strange and basically said since the food is fine and it’s not their fault that there’s nothing they could do. While she wasn’t rude, she didn’t try to help me in any way. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I felt bothered by it after leaving, so I called and spoke to the Owner/Manager…who basically doubled down on this idea. She basically said that because there was no hair or anything on the food, it’s not their fault and the food is fine - that just because I don’t like it doesn’t matter. I explained to her as calmly as I could that everyone has different tastes and not everyone is going to enjoy the dish. She responded by saying that if 10 people said they didn’t like it, then that’s different - but since it was only me, that’s on me and not their fault. I sincerely didn’t appreciate the owner/manager’s tone or her lack of customer service.

Needless to say, I did not feel valued as a customer and will absolutely never go back to this restaurant. There’s nothing about it that makes me want to go back. It was not a great experience. I looked at other low reviews and it just looks like it’s the customer’s fault when things go wrong - there’s no accountability. If quality assurance is important to you and you just want a positive experience, I’d reconsider coming to this restaurant.
-
Response to Owner: Thanks for your response. My review throughly outlines what happened: I told them I didn’t like the noodles, they said the food was fine, that it wasn’t their fault and didn’t take the meal back nor offered me a replacement…and that was a huge problem for me. Both the waitress and the manager told me the same thing, so I’m sure that’s store policy. Unless I’m offered a refund or a replacement meal, we have nothing further to discuss. I’m disgusted by the customer service I received - that’s enough to make me never return.

It was not very appealing but I thought the food would be good. It was about a 5.5 and the waitress was the only waitress as far as we could see. My daughter wasn't pleased with her meal and she let the waitress know and you would have thought we said the whole place was horrible. After speaking to the owner, she wasn't any better. As a business owner you have to be able to accept criticism, especially when it's given to you in a good way. Unfortunately we wont be returning.

My husband and I wanted to try an new place a bit closer to our house, so we order dinner to-go on a Saturday night. We ordered the calamari and veggie tempura as appetizers and the Tuna Tataki and Dynamite rolls for our entrees. I had been craving sushi all day and to say this dinner was a disappointment would be an understatement. The calamari was very much something I could have picked up in the frozen food isle of the local grocery store and put in the air fryer myself. Actually, it probably would have been better/crispier if I had done so. The dynamite roll was kind of lukewarm, lacked flavor and left a lot to be desired. The worst item hands down was the Tuna Tataki roll, that was supposed to be topped with seared red tuna. The "seared tuna" was very rubbery (not a texture I usually prefer in fish), it almost seemed like they had just thrown it under the broiler and maybe overcooked it. The inside of the roll was okay, but I definitely didn't pay for a specialty roll to feed all the fish it was topped with to the dogs and be left with essentially a regular tuna roll I could have ordered for half the price. The veggie tempura was good, but I think that's setting a pretty low bar for a Japanese restaurant.

The service was great from the server and the cook. The food was not all that great I’ve definitely had better from other restaurants. My husband and I both had chicken hibachi and California roll. The California roll was great. Hibachi not so much and wasn’t worth the price made my stomach hurt.

I was disappointed. The sushi here on the 11 piece large Nigiri plate I ordered ($26) was room temperature and mushy. The Nigiri at Harris Teeter has larger pieces, cold and the sushi is firm and is $24 for $12 pieces. My wife ordered a noodle dish and loved it. Our waitress did a good job. The ambience is plain and nothing special. The fried cheesecake was ok.

My best friend and I stopped into Miyaki after a long day of golf. This food really hit the spot and was pretty well priced! We each had Miso soup (very flavorful) and the seaweed salad (so fresh and well balanced!). We ended up sharing the Angel roll, James River roll and Vegetable stir fry! We enjoyed everything and will definitely go back! There were a lot of birthdays going on and a lot of birthday songs but other than that it was great!

The food was delicious and the service was excellent! The hibachi chef is a singing chef and does tricks as well. Young ladies get our drink and food order, they serve the beverages, salad and miso soup. The chef cooks the food and serves the food, yum yum sauce and or soy sauce etc. The chef is down to Earth and interacts well with children and adults.

5 months prior, my review was:

The hibachi food grilled in front of you is always good, service is usually excellent and the bathrooms are not the best. The (lady) owner always comes out to speak to us. Sometimes, we have to wait for hibachi food and service because there is usually 1 or 2 cooks. The yum yum sauce is delicious, the salad is okay and the miso soup is not the best!

6 years prior, my review was:

Wow, excellent food and service today. No paper towels in bathroom, asked for towel after I got out of bathroom, they gave me paper towels to dry my hands, we spilled drink, same guy cleaned up, and the chef, Alex, was good, did as I asked, no tricks, just fix us the meal please, he did that and the food was excellent!

You have to schedule hibachi table ahead of time. While there was an open table they wanted to wait to fill it. One table being served only had 3 people so not sure why we got a no, for 3rd time. Ate from menu instead. Wait staff brought appetizer with meal and when asked to have with time in-between we also got a no. Food was good. Portions a bit small for price.

Nothing special here. As a minority, I take offense when the chef engages the Caucasian family and ignored us at the table. To ensure I was not overacting, his actions were repeated at the next table where a black couple was ignored. Disappointed in him when he’s a minority himself. Food was ok.

A preface: I cannot attest to the atmosphere in Miyaki, as this was a takeout order, but we’ve been in there before and it was okay.

We’ve eaten here many times, in and out of the restaurant. The sushi was always fresh, and we’ve never had a problem with the service.

Tonight, we ordered several sushi rolls (both general and specialty), a seaweed salad, and gyoza, and it was VERY lackluster. We were disappointed because we’ve had good sushi here before, but the radish in one roll tasted bad (under fermented), and the avocado looked terrible on almost all of the rolls. I understand the temperamental way an avocado can be, but it just really threw off the appeal of the sushi. All of the sushi tasted like grocery store sushi.

It may have been an off night, or this is the sign of things to come, but we likely won’t be back.

This is one of the better Hibachi grills that we have gone to in the area. The restaurant was clean, the bathroom was clean, the hood above the grill did need to be cleaned.

We walked in and were greeted immediately. Given the option without a reservation to sit at a table or the hibachi, my kids love hibachi so that was our choice. Our drink order was taken not long after we were seated.

My kids ordered some sushi which they loved, the server was very nice and willing to explain what a dish looked like to be sure that was what they wanted.

The chef came out after we enjoyed out soups and salads. He was great. They made accommodations for my shellfish allergy by cooking my items on the grill prior to my kids to avoid cross contamination.

Everything was delicious. Drinks were kept filled, super nice staff.

We will drive up to Williamsburg for this restaurant next time we want hibachi.

This place has really good food.
Gyoza is crunchy.
Miso soup is good, but it has very little tofu or kombu. Like 1-2 pieces of each per bowl. Which is fine for free, but I would not pay again for it on it's own.
Home made salad dressing is amazing.
Veggie tempura is good and is very crunchy. Shrimp tempura is also crunchy, but shrimp is not always cleaned fully.
Sushi tastes fresh. Tunadon comes with a bed of sushi rice and is great to share. Red rose (tuna+avocado) is also really nice and fresh.
Just tried the inari sushi roll (plain) and will definitely get it again.
Drinks vary depending on who makes them, most of the time they are good.
Staff is friendly.
The only reasons for a lost star would be because sometimes when I go I end up with utensils& dishes that have leftover food on them.
Another (temporary?) reason is because of the order later feature on their website. Don't use it or your food will be made the wrong day. I had mine made days ago when I originally put in the order even though I chose a new future date through the "schedule for later". When I went to pick it up it wasn't ready. I had to rewrite the order down because they threw out the ticket and had to wait. They told me when we realized what happened to not use this feature, I told them I did not know that I was not supposed to use it because it is offered on their website, & then they said they will take this feature down in the future. They were nice about it, but it is not an ideal situation to be in for both parties. Until then be careful.
Bathrooms are clean.
Tables have hand sanitizer which is really nice to see.
Atmosphere is usually quiet and peaceful unless there is a hibachi show going on, but it isn't too bad. Just a bit loud at certain points.
Overall I still love this place and highly recommend it. Best option (if you have time) is to dine in & eat.

This is a hidden gem! Looks inconspicuous being next to a grocery store in a quiet shopping center, but be pleasantly surprised for an amazing treat! The staff is super friendly and helpful–thank you to my wonderful server, Anne! I like how it’s sectioned off so you can feel free to be a bit louder in the bbq section while having more private convos in a couple areas.

Can’t say enough good things about the food! We loved everything we got. Tried the nigiri platter: fish was super fresh and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Go for the Korean chirashi bowl if you want more greens but still want some rice and raw fish. It comes with sesame oil on it and Korean gochujang sauce you can put on yourself-perfection! I heard they get super busy which is great to hear as local businesses like this deserve the support. Got lucky and dinner for us was super chill. But either way, I will definitely be coming back!! Thank you, Miyaki!

The food was mediocre at best and once we were finished eating a huge roach started crawling up the wall right next to us. We left our leftovers at the table and were disgusted that we just ate in an establishment with a roach infestation. We asked for a reimbursement for this and were told that we were only allowed a 25% refund. We then asked to speak to the manager and were told by the servers that she was not in today. They got us the 25% and the managers number, we exited the building and called the number outside. We were given the wrong number. We went back inside and got the correct number, but the manager (we were told her name was Lisa) did not pick up and after several employees tried calling her on their personal phones, she still did not pick up. The employees ended up giving us the other 25%, to make a total 50% refund, without the manager Lisa’s approval because she was AWOL. I would only recommend eating here if you have a taste for bugs, good luck getting a refund or getting Lisa to pick up the phone.

It was our first time here. The sweet tea was delicious. The Gyoza was good. Came fast. But we had to ask the server for napkins and chopsticks after it came to our table. I wanted sushi, but they had a long back up, only 1 sushi chef, and waitress said she was not sure if it would take 30 minutes or 1 hour to get sushi, just a long time if we ordered it. Disappointing. It did look good at other tables we saw. So alternatively I ordered Bi Bam Bop, it was not good for me an upset my stomach before we even left. The rice was burned and some crunchy not cooked, didn't like the slivered mushrooms in it (texture, look or flavor 🤔). My husband enjoyed his meal.

The bowl they served it in never allowed it to cool at all which means that soup every bite was hot. No cold soup from start to finish.

I've never eaten such an awful Takoyaki. It feels like it's made of rice. It's very disgusting. It's actually spicy Mayo on top, not Mayo. It's the first time to eat such an awful Takoyaki.

So good they put their name on it, the "Miyaki" deep fried rolls are my new favorite thing in life, they're that good. Cream cheese and avocado pair well with the fresh tuna, spicy mayo, and wasabi mayo. Of course you must properly dip it in a tub of more wasabi and soy sauce to add more heat and salt for no reason. Just enough crunch to remind you it's not as healthy as the other sushi, but it's worth it.
Spicy Jalapeno sushi bar appetizer is basically the already spicy Miyaki roll shoved inside a jalapeno. It has an extra crispy tempura crust, and it's obviously amazing. I thought I ordered tempura jalapeno poppers. I only noticed appetizer on the menu, not the sushi bar part . So I was surprised when the deep fried rolls arrived, but it was a good surprise, and made more sense. They can be hot, almost too hot, so I like it, but it might be too much heat for some people. Highly recommend those 2 menu items. I've tried nothing else, because that's all I order now. Unfortunately I have only ordered online, so I can't comment on the experience in the restaurant.

Entertaining & interactive food preparation. Perhaps, the waitress needed help. Or, she was not having a pleasant day. Customer service less than acceptable. I felt rushed to select an entrée, ask a question or request basic meal enhancements. Length of time to pay tab was equally unacceptable as the waitress handed the checks to one of my guests for them to disburse to everyone at the table.
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 as the highest score, I would give the food a 6.5. I will dine here again before completely ruling them out.

We had a lot of fun, if you sit at the Hibachi table you need 2 people ordering Hibachi. We had 8 and 4 ordered Hibachi. That was fun and others could order sushi or items from the menu. The meal took a pretty long time but we were good with it because we always had something to eat or the show like atmosphere of the 3 hibachi tables. Our 2.5 year old granddaughter was with us and it was a little long towards the end for her.

WONT BE BACK! Food wasn’t very good and portion size was very small for the price. They took it upon their self to add the gratuity and we didn’t have a big party just my family of 6. They wouldn’t let us eat hibachi because it was a wait and there wasn’t even anybody at the hibachi grills. The steak has no flavor at all and everything is very bland. They brought out our utensils with their bare hands (not even wrapped in a paper towel) and one had food dried to it! The soup tasted like dirty dish water and calamari tasted bad as well. To top it all off they didn’t give me the correct change back!

We had the hibachi dinner with the tableside chef. He put on a good performance while preparing the meal. The filet mignon and the scallops were both very good. Fried rice was good too. The vegetables were disappointing and the shrimp were so overcooked that they were not good. Very dry and tasteless. Overall, an average meal at a premium price. We are not likely to return.

Eat here if you enjoy dining with ROACHES. So disgusted by this restaurant. We got here about an hour prior to closing and were the only ones in the restaurant. Our evening started off great enjoying hibachi entertainment. As the hibachi cook left our table and we began to eat we noticed a roach crawling on the wall beside us. Needless to say we immediately stopped eating and went to alert our server. She first grabbed a rag, then swapped it for a broom and dustpan to sweep it away oh so casually. She then went to alert her manager who we could overhear saying "so what do they want". She returned to our table and offered 20% off our bill as if we should still pay for our meal. I asked for our meal to be comped. She left to ask the manager again and stated all they can do is reduce the bill by 50%. How disgusting that our health and safety were risked and they wouldn't even comp our meal. I will be making a full report with the VA health department so the restaurant can be inspected.

All the specialty sushi is $14. I’ve paid less for much better quality at places that were BOGO. Spicy wasn’t spicy, cooked was barely warm. It was bland and overall underwhelming. The edamame came out cold then over cooked when we asked it to be warmed up. The seaweed salad was tiny for $5. The hibachi might be better, but if you’re thinking about coming here for just sushi, go elsewhere.

Came in and was seated by 7:10pm, put our order in about 7:16pm. While we were waiting, we were moved to another table. 30 minutes goes by and no one comes to check on us. I get up and ask where our food was and the waitress hadn’t even put it in. At that point the male waiter puts it in for us and says “sorry about that give us like another 10-15minutes” I say “ok”. Another 30 minutes rolls by and I’m watching a family next to us walk in, order, eat, then finish, and then order something else all while we’re sitting there waiting for 2 rolls of sushi and a meat dish. A little over an hour of my time that I will never get back, didn’t even get my food. I am incredibly frustrated and will never return here.

As noted. Customer service is non-existent (walk in, sit down, order, eat, pay/leave) so don’t expect any interaction or small talk.

Sushi chefs are awesome and push orders out quickly. Our cooked food/kitchen items took a while but the food was excellent. No complaints on the food.

I usually only leave reviews when things don't go according to plan. We ordered the Tour of Japan, a fantastic value. We ordered as takeout as many are doing for various reasons at this time. The order includes sushi from the sushi bar and other stuff prepared in the back kitchen, and the sushi was missing. Pretty easy to happen, no big deal.

The restaurant handled the mix up like a champ and replaced the sushi portion and got me back to my meal before it got cold. It's easy to leave a good review when everything goeswell, but it takes effort to turn around a potential negative experience, so job well done.

Also, food is great, this place is a go-to when we're in town.

The food is amazing!!! Been twice in three weeks. Once for a young birthday party and once for an adult dinner. The B-day party we got moved half way thru our meal to a different hibachi table. Tonight we waited over 20 minutes for our reserved table to be ready bc of another party was leaving. We weren't asked if we wanted drinks or apps at the first table. When we were done we were asked to move to another table bc another party was waiting. Maybe the scheduling needs to be more efficient. I spent over 100 for 2 people and being asked to move was a little inconsiderate. We may have spent more money. Gratuity was added after we got the bill. The food is good, but the service is something to be reckoned with. I know all are short staffed right now, and took that in to consideration. The chef was amazing, fun, and cooked our food to perfection. The service during dinner was good. We got our drinks we asked for in a timely manner and waters were kept full. FOOD WAS OFF THE CHARTS!!!! It was being asked to move both times that have me scratching my head.

Great food, rare to find full unagi plates. So good! Service did seem a little... business. I don't go to restaurants for social interaction, so won't say this in any way a negative. But for many it will be.

I gave a 4 star only because of cleanliness. Dining area was good, but the hoods and area around the teppanyaki tables were pretty dusty. Though it should be noted this is during the Covid19 limited capacity, so those areas were not in use.

Would you like some fried hair with your Tempura? Brought this to their attention and they brought back 1 replacement piece.
Rice portion for bento was literally a tbs size. I've never been one to make a scene, I'd rather see what the servers would to compensate it but nothing really came up after, just gave us our check with no discount or anything. On a positive note, the appetizer Dragonite was pretty good.

The portion size for korean barbecue was extremely small for the price paid. The presentation of the marinated kbbq was embarrassing for a respectable establishment. Cuts of meat were clumped together and extremely difficult to separate, the cuts of meat were not uniform, and it was given in a single tray the size of a bento box. If this is your only option for korean barbecue, choose a different restaurant.

The food is good.

The service is not. If you promise your customers that food is ready in 20 minutes, it should be ready in 20 minutes.

I can understand that it might take longer, but I don’t see any reason why I should pay for service fee if service was bad.

If you charge a service fee, you have to provide an appropriate SERVICE to your customers.

That would be fair.
