First time dining here, someone at work suggested it so we stopped in for lunch! Great atmosphere & welcoming once you walk in. We were seated right away and the customer service was exceptional! Our food came out and I was very surprised by not only the portion but the quality as well! We ordered 4 rolls and were more than stuffed! We’ve been to quite a few shushi places & this one by far is the BEST!!!

Went for the first time this evening and so happy we did. 3 of us got a variety of rolls and all of us were impressed and full at the end of our meal . Highly recommend the sushi poppers and scallop g2g rolls. Black widow, eastern shore , salmango, and Oklahoma roll were also delicious. Cannot wait to go back and try more. Shocked I never knew of this place before but so glad we found it ! Portions are great , over all quality, quantity and freshness is amazing and prices are not high! Definitely worth it.

Very cozy restaurant, very unassuming from the outside. There were lots of patrons a great sign that this must be the local favorite spot. The servers and staff were very friendly. There was a gentleman talking to customers who seemingly was the manager or owner, sharing the concept behind what they ordered. Food was delicious. I ordered the roll with fried soft shell crab but asked that the fruits be on the side; it came to my table looking delectable and tasting quadruply so. Will definitely come back to try everything. Highly recommended

I was completely misled by the high Google reviews for this sushi restaurant. It felt like a bait-and-switch experience, given its high star rating. Months later, I still vividly recall the disappointment and horror of our meal.
Having enjoyed sushi in California, Asia, and locally in Virginia Beach and Suffolk, I can confidently say this was the worst sushi I’ve ever had. The rolls were poorly constructed, with unevenly cut fish and toppings precariously perched on the rice log. It was a mess from the start.
When we bit into the rolls, the rice was so over-compressed it had the texture of rubber. The raw fish tasted fishy and far from fresh—a major red flag for sushi. To make matters worse, we made the mistake of ordering uni, which was overwhelmingly fishy and unpleasant. I genuinely struggled to swallow it but felt obligated since we had paid for it.
The only redeeming aspect of the visit was the staff, who were incredibly kind. Unfortunately, the food was so bad that we didn’t have the heart to tell them. We simply wanted to leave as quickly as possible.
I struggled with whether to write this negative review because I understand how hard it is for small business owners to survive. However, I don’t want others who have had good sushi to go through the same disappointing experience I did, being misled by the high reviews.
Adding insult to injury, we spent over $100 on this terrible meal, making it even more unforgettable.
Those who rated this place four or five stars must have never had real, good sushi. This was, without question, the most unforgettable sushi experience of my life—for all the wrong reasons. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

I have visited This Old House a several times over the years for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant itself is very dark inside so it is not obvious immediately at how old and worn everything looks. More importantly, the sushi presentation is very sloppy and messy. Just take a look at the pictures that other diners have shared. The rice is very mushy so it's very hard to eat it. The fish pieces itself seems to be odds and ends and at times didn't seem fresh. Service is inconsistent and staff also looks sloppy and messy. Sorry but I can't honestly recommend this place to anyone.

I come here every week, sometimes even more than that. I come from California so I have high expectations for sushi, and this place has mind blowingly good sushi. The best out here for sure, I have tried nearly all of the sushi places around, and this is by far the best. The employees are helpful and the chefs are amazing. There is a sense of humor and a calmness to the atmosphere. They will make you something you will like after talking to you if you cannot decide on anything. Highly recommend

I have been coming here almost since he opened. The food is next level, I place him at the top of all the places I've dined. He doesn't always go in for the "extras" like Dry Ice or specialty dishware, but instead invest his dollars in assuring the finest quality fish available. If he doesn't like the quality available, it won't be on his menu today. He will always take the time to discuss your preferences and concerns and will "customize" your food around that. The restraint itself can use a little face lift (something I know he has been fighting the Landlord over), but that's one of the things that makes this truly "A Diamond in the Rough).

I called to place a to-go order and used the menu online (which is the only accessible menu) and when I come in the order is $24 MORE than the price totaled online. I asked to pay ahead and was not even told the total—I was told to pay in person. I absolutely cannot believe they charged such an egregious amount more than advertised. This is 148% more than the price everything was listed for! I would understand if this was communicated to me when ordering, but it was not. I will not ever return to this establishment. I would’ve been comfortable paying the price had I been informed previously, but this just seems deceptive. My total came to $74 from what totals $50.75 as pictures in the photos below.

A great place if you're looking for simple and quiet as far as a sushi bar and kitchen goes. The focus is mostly nigiri, maki and then teppan entrees. Didn't have the teppan but had a couple of rolls and nigiri. Remember, sushi is less about the freshest fish and more about its preparation, which is excellent in this regard. It all leads to deliciousness in everything I had. The staff are polite and professional, they are very sociable. They are following current Covid guidelines. Recommended.

Very impressive family sushi restaurant with passion for their food! They put the chain sushi restaurants in the area to shame. Here I started with individual pieces of sushi, and then a Virginia Eel Roll with a bowl of miso soup.
The temperature of the fish was slightly chilled below room temp, so as you eat, it gets to the right temperature for eating sushi. The quality was quite good, not Tsukiji Market good, but good for this region of the US. The rice was at the perfect temp, however, the texture could use improvement. And of course, extremely generous amounts of fish.
It seems like they actually make their miso soup with paste rather than the cheap powdered soup, which is very rare. Only it needs to be tuned down a bit(too much miso), then it'd be perfect.
The hole in the wall vibe is very reminiscent to restaurants in Japan, with menu items posted on the wall. If you lived in Japan before, then this place will give you a bit of notalgia, as if you're walking through the alleys of Yokosuka.
So if you are in the mood for sushi, don't spend your fortune at a restaurant that feeds you more rice than fish, and fish more frozen than chilled.
Trust your local Asian food snob and Come visit This Old House!

Fantastic food (servings were bigger than I was anticipating), and the server was fun, thoughtful, and amusing. The only small drawback was that the incense was very strong at first (although I was at a table next to it) and I'm not used to it but the smell lessened as the meal went on. Fantastic time overall and my family and I found our new favorite sushi place.

I've been coming here since I was still in a car seat, and have been coming back ever since. The quality of Lee's food hasn't changed since the 90s/2000s, and the atmosphere always feels like coming back home after a long trip away. If you have food sensitivities (like my mom does), they can make accommodations on how the food is prepped/served/etc. If you're a first-time sushi/seafood eater, they make recommendations on what to try first. Basically, this is the only place to go for the best sushi.

Oh, where to start… we went here for my birthday last night, instead of my normal spot in Norfolk, because of two recommendations AND the high rating. I will never trust the food recommendations of those two people ever again. And I’m simply confused about all the five star reviews.
First off, we walked in and there was such a fishy stink that my 7 yo asked why it smelled so bad. Then the owner got snippy with us because I requested a table for 6 and my mom said there was only 5 of us. Not that one seat would change the size of our table. Our waitress was wearing pajama pants, which was not only tacky, but a little gross. My husband ordered plain chicken and rice for our 7 year old. It came to the table swimming in teriyaki sauce. Didn’t send it back because I didn’t trust the integrity of the staff.
As far as the sushi goes; clunky cuts, poor quality of fish, not wrapped as tight as should be, rice was over cooked mush, and I hate to say that the almond tata was just plain gross. The spider roll was especially disappointing. The soft shell crab tasted off AND there were no vegetables in it, which may have potentially made it as least slightly more edible.
The most devastating part, it ended being MORE expensive that my usual spot, kotobuki, and didn’t even come close to the quality.
Visited 2 years ago
The sushi was good, with some interesting vegan roll concoctions she was able to whip up for me, which was much appreciated. The qualm here was just price/quantity: $24 wasn't enough to leave me full, which shouldn't be the case with vegetable sushi almost anywhere.

All the rolls we got were so flavorful and unique. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough and I would rate it higher if I could. I will still be thinking about this sushi weeks later.

The best sushi in Virginia Beach! Here you are going to find rolls that you literally won’t find anywhere else. He doesn’t necessarily follow any sushi style I am familiar with he just does what he think will taste good, and that is why it is amazing. Whenever I am in Virginia going here is a must. One of the BEST sushi places I've ever been to and I eat sushi weekly. 2 of us shared 4 special rolls. The Black Widow, Sushi Popper, Crab cake G2G, and one other I can't remember the name of. They were all delicious. Everything was so fresh. The miso soup was rich and flavorful, the salad dressing was great, and sake was delicious. The chef designs his rolls and is very friendly. He takes the time to talk to you and if you want anything specific, he'll adjust his rolls to meet your preferences. I cannot review this place highly enough and I'm very picky with sushi. We will be back. Our total for 1 small sake, 1 coke, 1 miso soup, 1 salad, and 4 HUGE special rolls that filled up 2 people was only $80.

Visited 2 years ago
I’ve been a resident of VB for 13 years and have tried most of the local fare. Had T.O.H.J.R saved for awhile and when sushi came up for dinner, I knew where I wanted to try.
Upon arrival, the smell of incense hits you. At first it’s fine but after awhile it became overwhelming to a highly sensitive person and I even formed a headache later…
I ordered a miso, soup, house salad, spicy tuna cocktail & a spicy philly roll. The miso soup and the house salad dressing is one of the best I’ve had in the area. When the tuna cocktail and roll came I couldn’t get over how big the chunks of fish were. I am a small person and it was too much for me to chew in one bite. By the time the sushi roll came I couldn’t muster down more than 2 pieces because the pieces of fish and cream cheese were so big + the rice. I ended up taking it home and hope to cut it down to more manageable pieces. Overall I don’t think I’ll be visiting again but good service!

We came here out of a recommendation from a local since we are not from the area and I can honestly say this is the best sushi I’ve had so far in my life. The restaurant feels homie and has the traditional table/bar where the Sushi Chef Lee makes his delicious sushi in front of you. Everyone was very welcoming and the quality was just amazing. For what you get the cost is nothing. This all could easily be 2x the price it should be, so you are getting a great deal. There are so many options and variety to choose and they do help you in recommending things and what they think you’d enjoy the most. I would be sure to come back whenever I’m in the area. 10/10 totally recommend!

Great sushi! For a starter my husband and I had hot sake and ginger salads. The hot sake was very good and the ginger salads were different, which made us sceptical at first. The ginger dressing is creamy, but after tasting it we loved it and it was a great ginger salad!
Then we ordered the sushi. A Phillie roll, tuna roll, salmon gtg, popper, and mama tortilla. I am the type of person that would normally go for hibachi or ramen at sushi restaurants because I'm not a big sushi fan, if I do ord r sushi it would be a crunchy roll (fried shrimp roll topped with crab mix), but my husband loves sushi! So I was going to try the sushi at This Old House since it was our first time. I was blown away by the taste and quality! My favorite was the mama tortilla since I love crispy salmon skin, second would be the popper roll which the poppers wasn't very spicy (I'm sure that may change depending on the season) and the spicy salmon was chunky which was very good! The salmon gtg was even good to me even though it was large pieces of salmon, because of the quality fish!
Can't wait to go back! Our server nice, funny, knowledgeable, and even warned us that their rolls are larger than most places(as in two salads and 5 rolls for two people may be too much), which we really appreciated!

We had the teppan chicken, a spicy tuna roll, and a spider roll. All of the food was SO good and very filling - you get a lot of food for what you pay! The service is great too, we ordered the food to go and they made a point of showing us everything before bagging the foods (AND they separated hot and cold boxes into different bags). I’m looking forward to going back and trying more of their rolls!!

It was a wonderful experience. Everyone was clean, super friendly, attentive to all of our needs, and the food was delicious. We were not rushed as my husband and I were catching up with some friends who would be leaving soon for deployment. Totally would recommend for anyone. I got the Dancing Dragon and it was over the top. It was gorgeously plated and I enjoyed the scenery which the restaurant displayed. 10/10 would recommend.

Mr Lee does his best with his twenty years of experience. He will make what you want and is clearly eating a loss to keep customers. He has novel rolls based on visitor requests. All the fish he served was good quality. The rolls were good for the price. It isn't the tightest execution I've ever seen, but it is maintained over decades. I will return when in VAb

Friendliest staff ever, large portions and good prices

Might be the best sushi I have ever had. And the owner is so friendly!

The rice is wet, so it can't be called sushi. I like Japanese food, so I went looking for a Japanese restaurant with a high rating, but this place was very disappointing.

Lived in Japan for 6 years. This comes very close to that taste for me. Will definitely go again.

This is, in everyone's opinion who has eaten there, THE best sushi restaurant in Hampton Roads...possibly Virginia. Mr. Lee is an amazing chef and very friendly and welcoming. The staff is helpful and courteous. But most of all, the sushi is phenomenal and plentiful. Sure, they can make a Philadelphia Roll and a California Roll if you're that kind of vanilla...but I recommend you try the scallops appetizer and the Sushi Popper roll. Live a little! You will not be disappointed!

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Virginia Beach. I go here every time I come home and it’s always amazing. The owner can customize your sushi any way you want it. He also cares about your experience and makes sure you get your money’s worth.
For example… The last time I went, my friend wanted to get 3 rolls for dinner. The owner said to get 2 rolls and let him know how he feels after eating them. After finishing those 2 rolls, my friend was full. The owner comes back to say, “I know you only needed 2 rolls and I’m happy you didn’t spend money on another one.” Most other restaurants wouldn’t have taken that kind of care for your dining experience or make sure you didn’t spend more money than necessary.
Highly recommended!!

This used to be my favorite sushi place until today. The food is always amazing but today I ordered extra so I could take some to go for a friend. The roll I ordered for myself didn’t have the spicy crab salad that normally comes on top and when I questioned it, I was told I ordered 3 rolls so I didn’t need it! I paid full price for everything I ordered…bad form Mr. Lee!!

This place has the most creative sushi that I have ever run into. Lee can take your order when sitting at the bar and will make your sushi any way that you like it. This restaurant is all about good service and making their customers feel comfortable and happy. Lee took great pains to be sure that my daughter and I enjoyed our sushi. We explored the menu and had Sushi Poppers, jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese and rolled in rice, then delicately deep fried for a crispy coating and then covered with spicy tuna. Next we enjoyed sushi with cooked salmon and crab cake on top. The Caterpillar. Finally the Lobster G2G roll with spicy crawfish, seaweed salad, mango and strawberry on top!
What a great treat. Lee made us feel at home like a regular in this cozy neighborhood restaurant. This is a great place to grab some lunch, have a casual date, or dinner of some great sushi recipes. We’ll be back again!

Update: I have been here several times since my initial review, and it's still amazing. The sushi chef remembers us, and is still very happy to tell you anything about the menu, including the contents of the rolls. My family and I will continue to visit, and enjoy the awesome food!
(End update)
The sushi is amazing, and some of the non-sushi items are, as well.
The rolls are pretty large, please don't just order a bunch of rolls unless you're sharing with a bunch of people!
The sushi chef is very friendly, and will ask questions to give recommendations on what to get.
All the rolls are made upon order, so feel free to customize them to your liking.
I think the only thing I wasn't big on, is the contents of the rolls are not on the menu. However, they are written on papers along the walls.
If you like sushi, I suggest giving them a try. It's a nice little place with a lot of flavor.

My family and I are real good friends with the owner Mr. Lee. Ate there for years till I moved to maryland. Since then all I can think about is having the best sushi in the world. Noone compares to the freshness like Mr. Lee has. We miss you my friend. Vandiver family

All the sushi got got was pretty good . Their prices were ok. The almond tatta I didn’t like too much. I didn’t like how they left such huge spears of cucumber in my rolls. I also found a hair on one of my pieces. My boyfriend and I have locs so I know for sure the hair wasn’t mine.

The customer service was amazing with personalized recommendations from the owner based on our preferences and the food was fantastic! It seems the salmon G2G roll was huge hit at our table, along with spicy California and dragon rolls. Highly recommend!

Been going to see Mr Lee for over 15 years. Not only does he take pride in his craft he takes pride in knowing his customer base. It's been 4 or 5 years since we last saw him. He still remembers us every time we walk through that door or talk on the phone. Such as the point to this review as we had friends in Va Beach this weekend. I made arrangements earlier in the week to call him and place a to go order that was going to be delivered 7 hours away. Once again he did not disappoint. Thank you as always.

I have been driving past this restaurant for a couple of years before I realized it was there. I decided to give it a try and I'm glad I did. Some of the best sushi I have had in the area. The rolls are original, large and delicious. The staff may have been even better than the food, friendly and attentive, you could tell they have loyal customer base. My son and I, at most sushi restaurants, split 5 rolls. We did the same here and ended up taking almost 2 rolls home. Looking forward to my next visit to try different items.

Amazing sushi and a wonderful owner, really funny guy. The quality here is fantastic, we are from Hawaii and are used to great sushi. This place went above our expectations!

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. Mr lee and his daughter made my wife and myself feel right at home with the way they treated us. Mr lee was not afraid to tell us to swap out one of his rolls for one of his specialtys. I really wish we found this place two years ago instead of our last night in Virginia Beach.

This is a really great place to go! The staff is friendly and so is the chef! They are also very helpful when deciding dishes. It's a little pricey but the food, quality, and service is definitely worth the extra penny.
I also don't mind if the chef likes to experiment with his sushi, or that they do take-out sushi. To me, it actually makes it a lot beter, especially if I want to customize or take a delicious meal home.
I also recommend the good-to-go salmon for anyone who decides to eat there, its my favorite. :)

When you first walk in you wonder if you’ll ever want to come back, the Decour is a bit rough. After you eat your first meal, you will come back again and again and again. You get the idea. Mr Lee is AWESOME!

It must be a joke, that this place receives anything higher than a 1star. I don’t care about the incense, they didn’t bother me. BUT the quality of the sushi was just terrible. Honestly had better sushi at grocery stores. The presentation of the food made it look like slop, the rice was so mushy and just way too much!
This place is for people who don’t know what good sushi is, and want to get full off of incorrectly made rice.
One positive was the gyoza appetizer, it actually had me fooled that this place could be good.
Please just please don’t Waste your time or money here.
Take the extra time to go to a quality sushi restaurant in Norfolk.
I highly recommend Osaka, kyoshi, Hokkaido all in Norfolk

Oh man, I love Mr.Lee’s restaurant. Not only have I known Chef since I was about 15 16 years old(I’m 38 now) I used to work with him rollin sushi and cooking in the kitchen. The food is OUTSTANDING and FILLING! Mr. Lee I think, has pretty much anything you can think of, he has a roll for it. It’s always fun when you go too, trust me…..your face will hurt from laughter before you leave. I HIGHLY recommend This Old House to everyone from everywhere🤩😎🥳🤣😂
