Small family-owned sushi restaurant
We have been searching for a Japanese sushi bar that resembles L.A. in its freshness, ambience, and roll choices. We were impressed and very glad to have found Soya. This restaurant has more than sushi for those who shy away from uncooked fish. So, for those in your group that desire an expanded menu, they certainly have lots of choices beyond sushi here. We were also delighted that Soya has reasonable hours as we stopped for a late lunch. Unlike the sushi bar down the street,, we were not turned away because it was not yet 5 p.m. Alexis was our server and was just wonderful. Highly recommend this restaurant, looking forward to our next visit!

The food was delicious. We had a few different sushi rolls including the VA crunchy roll. The wings were amazing. We arrived at opening time on a Sunday morning. Service was great, Jasmin was very attentive, and the service was very quick.
Nice music was playing, and the restaurant was very clean. It is located right by the beach, we were able to go see the Poseidon statue and walk around after.
We will definitely be back soon!

This was a very underwhelming experience. We came from NoVA and what Soyu has would be equivalent to a Chinese sushi joint. Not anything like a proper Sushi place you'd find in NoVA. Sushi is soggy, loose, and relies too much on the hoisin sauce, which they pour on everything. Wasabi is not spicy at all, and tastes fake.
Service was subpar. It was a Saturday night and they only had one sushi chef on duty. Dude was working his socks off on table and take out orders. In his grey T-shirt. Our waitress was initially nice, but when we wanted to check the status of an additional yakisoba plate we added to our tab near the end, after waiting for about 15 mins, she lectured us about how it was put at the end of the queue because we didn't order it from the beginning. Implying that we should have known it is supposed to take a long time! A nice and gentle "yes it is coming" would have done just fine.
The atmosphere was unimpressive. Very dark and somewhat messy, with kitchen and food supply boxes visible from our table. Basically what you would see at a takeout Chinese place.
I wouldn't complain if the price was cheap, but it was not cheap! I guess they charge mostly for the convenient location near the beachfront hotels. We won't be coming back.

I recently visited this area, and there aren't many sushi restaurants here, so there aren't many options. However, I think this place is relatively good. The prices seemed fairly normal or even a bit reasonable. The portions varied, with some items being larger or smaller than expected, but overall, it was enough to be satisfying. The taste wasn't bad, and the fish seemed reasonably fresh. I'm not sure if the chef was Japanese, but it appeared that an Asian man was working in the kitchen. So, if you are craving sushi in this area, this place is a good option.

We went to Soya in the off season on a Saturday night. I’m not sure if they were just short staffed, but service took a LONG time! We did not get our drinks refilled. I had to ask for the check after we were sitting there with empty plates in front of us. That said, the sushi was delicious! We had fried gyoza (6 pieces). That was just ok. It was more steamed dumpling like. We had the California roll, crunch California roll, VA Beach Crunch roll (amazing), and 2 other rolls that I can’t remember that were also amazing! They had great sauces on them, fresh fish & overall we agreed that it was worth the wait & we would 100% go back there again!

Everything about Soya was very good! We visited on a Wednesday during lunch and they weren't very busy. My Chef's Special sushi combo was fantastic! I was presented with large, fresh slices of fish, even in the Tekka Maki roll. This was some of the best sushi I have had! Everyone else was happy with their food as well. The only two small things that prevented me from giving 5 stars across the board is no "lunch" menu and the Yakisoba seemed very heavy on onions. Overall, a delicious experience.

When we got to the place, there wasn’t even a cashier at the front. I can see it was short staffed but only 1 employee is doing all the work? The cashier was nice and everything about that was okay. The fried rice we got with our hibachi was plain. It had barely any flavor and it was just overall depressing. DONT fall for those 5 start review about its customer service. I came here a year ago and it still sucks. Go somewhere else to spend your money on some quality food.

This is my go to place with friends, that never had sushi or Japanese food in general.
The dude behind the counter makes everything fresh and in front of your eyes.
Perfectly coordinated seasoning.
We had dumplings as starters and as dessert, they are just so amazing.
Try it out. It's worth every penny.
And it's also not as expensive as many restaurants around the beach are.

The $15 lunch special is perfect! Soup, salad, California roll, choice of shrimp or fish tempura, and a bowl of Japanese ice cream; plenty to eat at a great price! Also ordered the shumai and gyoza, and they came out perfectly steamed. Will definitely eat here again!

If you have to wait a while to be seated, don't be concerned. The service was good. Our waitress was attentive and we had a party of 10. The food came out on a very timely basis and was very good. The California rolls were very good. We had Hibachi Steak, Hibachi Chicken, and Teriyaki Chicken. This was certainly a nice little find at the last minute.

Do not recommend this place at all. Overpriced with terrible food. Edamame was undercooked. Miso soup was room temperature. Spicy salmon roll to them apparently is just salmon roll with lots of sriracha all over it. Seafood udon was tasteless and hibachi was way too salty. Not the waitress fault - she was nice but will not go back. Lunch for 3 of us and bill was over $100 with no alcohol, only tea and soda.

Got take out from here, it’s a real hidden gem! The quality of the seafood is great and the rice was cooked perfectly. The hot appetizers were great also. Will definitely order from here again and do dine in.

Re: Edgar Robredo' 1-Star review:
My wife and I were dining near their group's two tables. One of the women in their group was loudly complaining about the wait several times, getting up from the table to do so. This is a small family-run restaurant that admits (signs on the door) that they are short staffed, and kindly ask for patience.
The "clarification on the bill" comment was their group trying to get out of paying the automatic 20% gratuity for groups over 6. Their group was 10, split over two table with members of their party hopping back and forth the entire time.
The same woman complaining about the wait, went on to say she didn't know the other group, and shouldn't have to pay the auto-gratuity for large groups. I have to assume she was planning on stiffing the young waitress for having to wait. As both tables left (together, of course), this woman went out of here way to approach the chef (owner?) to tell him he needs to "learn how to speak to customers properly". Her tone was incredibly rude, to speak to another person like that, especially after they just made your meal.
The "tense environment" mentioned in their review is because another patron told this woman she was done and needed to leave. She had comments for him on her way out as well. Ask anyone dining there, we heard everything, and Soya staff were as respectful as they could be with this woman. More so than I would have been in their position.
We are locals, and this is one of our favorite sushi spots in Virginia Beach. Their "31 Ocean" roll is my favorite roll in all of the Hampton Roads region, and of all time. Seriously, I can't get enough of it. Staff is always so nice and attentive, even when there is a rush. We will be back, as we regularly do!

So we tried a few rolls and sashimi does shimmy was bigger pieces than I expected. The rules however seem like they were being rolled by a novice they were not very tight and they fell apart when you tried to pick them up and place them in your mouth. The flavor we're good and the quality of the sashimi was good as well. As far as the atmosphere goes for being at the beachfront I thought it would have a more elaborate surrounding. Customer service one waitress and she did an excellent job.

Bought a Groupon for $40 any day. My total was $41.90.. he tells me I owe $5 something I was confused because again I should only owe $1.90.. he tells me I have to pay sales tax separately. Fine then why are you taking the $1.90 and adding sales tax? Technically if you subtract the sales tax my total would have been even less then $41.. I’m not worried about $5 but it’s the principle that they’re stealing from Groupon users and should be reported.

The food was good, but the service was HORRIBLE. My best friend was visiting from out of town, so I decided to treat her to a restaurant I had been wanting to go to for a while, but never had the chance to go to. However, my plans for a peaceful evening to catch up with a good friend got ruined thanks to the attitude of our server, Jasmine. She provided us with genuinely the worst server experience I have ever had at a restaurant. When we got to the restaurant around 5pm, there was only one other table eating. Upon ordering, I asked what kind of veggies come with the Chicken Teriyaki dinner. Before answering my question, she scowled at me and said that they aren’t able to separate any vegetables from the meal because they are all mixed together. Great, I literally didn’t ask that. But ok. After she takes our orders, she tells us that our meals come with salads and miso soup. I ask her “what kind of salad is it?”, to which she replies “it has lettuce and veggies and dressing”. I’m not sure if she didn’t understand my question, or if she enjoys being as unhelpful as possible, so I decide to drop it. Once my friend and I receive our salads, I catch her attention to ask for a fork. She rudely snatches the unopened chopsticks from the table, and says “sorry I didn't realize sooner” and walks away. You’re sorry you didn’t realize what? That I look like someone who doesn’t know how to use chopsticks? I’m sorry, but that was incredibly rude of her to do and to assume. There are many people who may not know how to use chopsticks, but there are also many people who are physically unable to use chopsticks due to a disability. I was incredibly offended. I know how to use chopsticks, and I was going to use them to eat my dinner with. I only asked for the fork so I could use it with my salad. But, due to her prejudice, she had taken away my chopsticks and I was honestly just scared to ask her for a new pair. But, as the night goes on, our dinner arrives and everything looks great. The food tastes good, and my friend and I are having a good time catching up with eachother. Our server walks by and asks if everything is good, and we respond with yes, it is. After she leaves, my friend says we should ask for the check. So, I see our server behind the bar filling up some glasses of water. I raise my hand to try to get her attention. I am also a server at a restaurant, and customers often will flag me down and say “the check, whenever you are ready”, so that is what I had intended to do in this scenario. She notices my raised hand, and she glares at me. She doesn’t ask me what I need help with; instead, she keeps glaring at me until I ask my question. I say “we are ready for the check” in a casual, kind tone. She scowls at me and, in the most passive aggressive voice, she says “you’re just going to have to wait because I am taking care of another table right now”. I am shocked. I have never had a server give me such attitude before, and I didn’t even do anything wrong! She had been rude to me from start to finish- this is no way to treat any customer, let alone a customer coming in to eat for their first time. As a server myself, I appreciate when my tables let me know they are ready for the check. I never intended for Jasmine to drop everything to give me my check, i just wanted to politely let her know we were ready whenever she had a moment. I really just cannot believe the experience I just had at this restaurant was real. As much as I loved the food, I would genuinely never want to come back for fear of having Jasmine as my server again. She does not know how to treat customers with care or respect. I really hope that Soya Sushi will learn about Jasmine’s behavior today and take action. My experience today was one that will make me NEVER return or recommend Soya Sushi to a friend. Jasmine’s behavior and actions today are something that should not be tolerated by an employer, and it truly makes me concerned to see someone like her working there.

Terrible, TERRIBLE service. We've been sitting here an hour and still no food. My water glass also needs refilled...I'm sure I'll have to refill the parking meter before the food arrives.... they clearly don't want to stay in business. It should be zero stars!
UPDATE: I upgraded to 2 stars just because you responded. However, a full house at the time of departure doesn't represent the service given with 5 tables sat and 3 servers. If my review doesn't reflect what you belive, then take a second look at your serving staff. (I only saw 1 server actually trying), I wish my family had her!

We’ve eaten here every year we’ve come to VA Beach. Food and service has always been decent. Went to eat here for dinner only to wait for over 20 minutes while the server was “getting our table ready.” Then be told by someone else that we had to be put on a wait list and wait an additional hour plus for a table even though there was no wait list, only one small reservation, an open sushi bar area along with several empty tables. I can see if we had arrived right before close that this would’ve been an issue, but we got there with about an hour left in service only to be essentially turned away with fake wait times that would put us past closed and be turned away by them anyway. Terrible customer experience.

My family and I have been here before, and the food was subpar. However, this trip the service has literally taken a nosedive off a cliff. We stood in line waiting to be seated, only to have a server complain directly in front of us that she didn’t want to serve us. She then proceeded to tell us that a few tables would be cleared momentarily so we could be seated. After that, she disappeared in the back never to return. Instead, a new server appeared and asked us if our name was on the “waitlist”. We told her no one ever asked us for a name…as there was no waitlist. This server then let us know it would be a 45 minute wait…with no waitlist. Mind you at this point we had already been standing here for 20+ minutes after being told we would “momentarily” be seated. It was obviously discriminatory because they didn’t want to serve 3 adults and 2 small children. Just another American run business that has zero customer service.

This place used to be great. It's gone downhill now. Was sat at the bar with a 3 top because no tables were open. Took 15 minutes for us to get a glass of water ( that I eventually had to ask for) and weren't even given menus when I sat down.
Then the two waitresses began to gossip behind the bar at the drink station.
I know service is a tough industry... But damn, not even a menu and a water?!

Roaches! Reached a crossed our food smashed the roach with bare knuckles. Left body parts and liquid on the wall! With our food still on the table and some of the roach still on the hand brings it back across the table. Walks away and proceeds to serve others! Dirty do not dine! When asked to speak to the manager. The server responded with “for what?” as if he did not just do what he did. I said because that was disgusting! He responds with “SO”. Paid and left…. Will not be back.

Great Sushi!
I ordered a plate of salmon and tuna nigiri, and a philly roll. Simple nigiri is usually my go-to, since it's usually a telling item to gauge the quality of the fish, rice and proportions. I have to say, all of it was on point. The fish was absolutely buttery smooth and tender on the palate. The rice was well prepared, and properly proportioned in relation to the piece of fish. The philly roll was pretty basic, and didn't really stand out for any reason. But, it's just a philly roll, so to be expected to a certain degree. I didn't try any of the fried or specialty rolls, but some of the ones I saw coming out from the bar looked good and were presented well. For drinks, they have a full bar, with plenty of beer and wine options.
The restaurant itself was nice overall. Not anything super amazing, but it was clean and had ample seating at tables, to include two bar areas, one of which was the sushi bar itself. The ambiance was pretty basic, nothing really special. Regarding parking, there is a parking garage attached to the restaurant itself. I saw a sign saying patrons of the shopping center (which the sushi restaurant is a part of) can get their parking validated. I don't know if that's a sure thing, as I walked to the restaurant, but maybe something you could inquire about if you're trying to park.
The service was the only part I wasn't terribly excited about, and is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. My waitress was very nice, but I stood at the door waiting to be seated for a few minutes before I was even acknowledged by anyone. I wasn't in a hurry, so I wasn't butt hurt about it, but given how dead the restaurant was inside, it left me wondering what was going on. It was after I got seated that I realized my server was dealing with (what seemed to be) an abundance of door dash and other takeout orders. I mean, I get it, but I felt like the majority of the time I was there, the customers in the restaurant came second to dealing with takeout orders. At one point, I was waiting on my server to get done dealing with multiple door dash drivers before I could get my check. Overall the service felt mediocre at best, although the server herself was very polite and welcoming.
Like many others, I used the Groupon to during my visit. I had zero issues when I tried redeeming the coupon (it has to be used for dine-in). With the Groupon, you really do get a good value for your money. The prices are pretty average for good sushi, and given the quality of the food, the Groupon is a awesome deal for sure.
This is a great sushi place overall. If they can put some more focus on their visiting customers and less on take out orders, this place is easily 5 stars all day.

The chicken stir fry had an ample amount of chicken in it ; however, the vegetables were 90% shredded onions, a few shreds of carrots, and I saw nothing green on my plate. There was no flavor so we requested a little teriyaki sauce. It was delivered cold from the fridge. While we waited for it, a server was next to the food being prepared, loosened her hair tie, and proceeded to sling it around and finger comb it until she tied it back into her hair tie. Disgusting. The sushi chef was chewing gum or food with his mouth open over the food he was preparing. The sushi was as good as sushi would typically be, but I wouldn't have eaten it if I saw what he was doing ahead of eating. The staff needs to be more conscious of this behavior. No more Soya for me.

Soya Sushi Bar and Bistro has some of the good seafood around Virginia Beach. I’d given them more stars but for their customer service. I had to stand one hour to get my take out order. Not only me though. All the take out order guys had to stand or lean against something. It seemed you don’t get invited to sit when you are there just to get your take out order.
With all that said note that they do not have a big space and as of today, they are short staffed. Also try to confirm the price of your order with them if you are ordering online. The prices may not necessarily reflect when you go get your order. Remember, their food is good. And an improvement on customer relations will be a plus.

Walking distance from most VA beach hotels. Nice little find for a great menu of different sushi. I can't say it was the freshest & rolls were a bit on the smaller side but most of it was delicious!

I ordered the spider roll and a calamari roll. Both were very good. I also ordered the oysters with fried rice. Personally I am not a fan of rice with corn, green beans and carrots. It didn’t seem very fried to me. I also did not care for the teriyaki sauce that came with the oysters which were over cooked.

Great sushi! However super long wait. Not sure if they were short staffed. A must try.

We ate very good selection of fresh good Sushi 🍣. No all you can eat in this restaurant but they were delicious a bit pricey but this is a small bistro by the ocean front

We came in on a dead Sunday and sat for 15 minutes with no service. It’s dark and gloomy in there which is a vibe kill. The women behind me had to send several items back so I left. Maybe they were just having a bad day.
Visited 2 years ago
We were the only customers in the building and couldn’t get any service. The lady that finally came over seemed incredibly annoyed with our presence so we just left. It says on the door they’re short staffed and I also work in a short staffed restaurant so I am incredibly understanding but we were not acknowledged or apologized to.

Everything was great. My new fav sushi spot. Try the Oyster shooters, you won’t be disappointed.

Sub par sushi experience. Fish was not fresh, and poor quality. I already feel sick. Just terrible, and definitely skip this place. Bleh!

🤦🏼♀️
Update: this place keeps disappointing. Came already third time in the evening and they’re closed more than an hour before their closing time listed online. Host just pointed at the door which has no listed closing time saying it says it there that they are closed.
Been there many times and usually it’s a good sushi place. That’s the only place where I’ve tried a Sushi Burrito and loved it! Usually coming back just for that. This last time wasn’t the case. As was explained by our server they got a new kitchen person and he didn’t figure out the rice yet, but it was terrible! Sushi looked sloppy and rice was one big blob of sticky. Couldn’t eat that. Will come back in a while in hope of having a better experience and changing it to five stars because I still believe in this place to be good.

The food was good - the nigiri wasn’t the freshest, but the shrimp tempura was so flaky and crispy. If you’re looking for amazing quality fish, this isn’t the place, but everything else was solid.

Very small rolls for the price, felt sick all night and the next day. The miso soup was fine and service was true to post Covid, off season, restaurants. Taylor Swift blasting in the background at 4pm could have been the most hilarious highlight of dinner. There is NO kids menu but saw a good amount of kids in there.

Service sucks, food took forever despite coming in at 7 on a Saturday still not great service, had to ask 3 times for lemons, asked if we could used a Groupon to which they said yes, and clearly there is fine print in a Groupon which we could have read better, but i think it’s nice to state things such as one per table can be used when you have a group of three come in.
Food was fine but not worth it, I’d rather go somewhere else, which we will next time.

My wife greatly enjoys Asian cuisine and likes Soya. I really like their salads.
Visited 2 years ago
We are no new to Soya. My children like to sit by the aquarium, never been a problem. But this time we were denied a table by the aquarium in completely (!) empty restaurant because this is “only one of two six tops” and we were only a party of four. It almost sounds surreal but this is the kind of hospitality your can expect here. Sorry Soya, I’d rather eat at home. Hope you’ll have a better experience here, try your luck.

This was the worst dining experience I have had. Our waitress was great and nice but it took over 45 minutes for sushi. Two people ordered the hibachi which the vegetables came out cold and were done eating before the sushi was even started for the other person. They are short staffed which I understand but I saw multiple times the owner be mean and rude to both waitresses in front of customers. No apology for a long wait time on 2 rolls of sushi when he saw us ask about it, he was rude to people that sat at the sushi bar just trying to make conversation. We are from out of state but I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

By far the best restaurant we have tried in VA Beach. Great food and our server, Haley was excellent. She was very welcoming and friendly. 10/10 recommend. Definitely will return.

Good flavor sushi, but extremely extremely small serving sizes with a long wait to be served and waited on.

The food was okay except for the fact that the price that they have is a little on the higher side with the serving size that you’ll get.

Sushi is very good and the rolls are very large. The sushi pizza is one if a kind. Luz was a great server.

Ordered a few rolls for dinner and was very disappointed, this place is trash. The rolls were all rice!! When I called and sent them pictures, the girl on the phone said “that’s how they come and there’s nothing they can do”. Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money here!

Absolutely the best sushi restaurant I have been. Nadia was very helpful and knowledgeable. We came in a family of 6 with 2 kids and they loved the chicken vegetable yakisoba. We had the sushi special and shrimp teriyaki. Will definitely come again while here in Virginia Beach. The mango ice shebert is absolutely awesome!

Over priced food for poor quality.
My family of 6 people came to this restaurant after all other restaurants were booked for the night.
It took roughly, 45min-1hr for our food and our food came out at all different times, which made it much longer to have dinner. We were at this restaurant for 2 hours in total.
Waitresses were very nice and polite but lacked refilling our cocktails due to our long wait.
Prices are expensive for little portions of food.
Save your money and go somewhere else!
Definitely not coming back to this place.

Absolutely disgusting. Most Expensive Tasteless Food I Have EVER had!! We left still hungry with a huge bill
Visited 3 years ago
i ordered the chicken hibachi and it was quite delicious! my only concern is that the soy sauce fizzles🤨 from the soup to the noodles, everything was tasteful. aside from the food being good, i only go to this restaurant for one reason and one reason only: the sweetest red head girl (i never got her name)🧸. she is very attentive and always so polite! anything i could ask for and more she delivers on. her service is UNMATCHED. be sure to ask for her whenever you dine in!!

I’m upset to give this review because typically I love their food and service but I learned last night that it’s best to visit during lunch hours.
I honestly wish they told us they weren’t taking any more tables. We weren’t greeted when we came in which is understandable when you’re short staffed but it seemed as if none of the servers wanted to take our table and when we finally placed our order, the waitress forgot to bring the items we ordered. Our waitress was very nice but it seemed she was upset about something going on in her personal life. Not sure, but she came to the table with tears in her eyes. I don’t mind waiting for service and GREAT FOOD but a little communication goes a long way.
Suffice to say, I will not be attending this restaurant for dinner anymore. I think this place best serves as a lunch spot. I do plan to visit again but if there’s a crowd when I do, I’ll find another place to eat.

I always visit this little hole in the wall restaurant when I visit Virginia Beach. Never been disappointed, this visit was the busiest I've seen it and these servers were beyond professional given how short staff they were. Will definitely be back my next visit.

Enter Japan. For real. Epic freshness with charming, hospitable service like you're the crown prince. The proprietor's spicy teriyaki sauce is homemade and the new love of your life. Order a spicy roll. It's not like the lazy locals who squirt Sriracha mayo and call it done. This is TLC, a passionate, homemade infusion of flavor! ADDICT WARNING: You'll come back repeatedly!!!

Superb service, and great sushi! If you are looking for a roll without raw fish I would definitely recommend the Mango roll (crab meat, fresh mango, cream cheese, with I think a Thai Chili sauce drizzled on top). Very refreshing and not heavy at all! But don’t let that fool you, you will be stuffed!
Compliments to the Chef and the wonderful wait staff!

Excellent service from our waitress Sophie, very nice and attentive, the food was excellent and the restaurant is beautiful inside imo, we ordered hibachi and the shrimp and steak were excellent! The sauce that comes with the meal is also excellent! I'll be returning and if you go, ask for Sophie, very good waitress!

I give three stars because the food is so delicious!!! If we hadn’t had two very poor experiences on food wait times I would give it higher. I really wish they were better staffed as I haven’t had a bad roll yet.

Came here to redeem a coupon being that all events preceding I have encountered them closed when they are listed as open.
Unacceptable
Last time I had arranged to meet a friend here and we were both met with disappointment that they were closed when listed as open.
If there is some hardships, the lack of reliable service or the seasonal availability has made a limit upon the menus post what is available even if it is a bowl of rice and some sake.

BEST sushi I have EVER had! Some of the freshest sushi and excellent portion sizes too! The shrimp tempura was gigantic and the tempura was so fresh yet light and crunchy. Definitely went to sleep dreaming about it! I will say, service was slow, but just grab a drink and make sure you’re in good company and the wait is totally worth it. Server/host was extremely sweet and between the three servers they had, they all were running around and providing excellent service. Covid times are rough and we all could be a little more understanding. Bought a Groupon and was blown away by the food!
