Japanese steakhouse offering tabletop hibachi shows & sushi bar seating, plus tropical cocktails.
I don't have a bad thing to say about this place, it was everything I hoped it would be. We didn't have a reservation so we had to wait 40 minutes but I'm so glad we did. (We shopped around the Plaza while waiting.) The soup that comes with our meal was seriously so good and flavorful! The salad was very fresh tasting. Our chef was excellent. He was very professional and accommodated all of our special requests (allergies, likes, dislikes, etc.) He did a big fire and also popped shrimp into our mouths from his spatula. Our steak, chicken, and shrimp was very fresh and cooked to perfection. Our waitress was very punctual and never let our cups below half empty. The people that we were seated next too seemed to be in a bad mood and the grills definitely keep it toasty in there so no need to bundle up if you run hot easy like I do but seriously, this was the best food I've had since visiting Virginia. We will definitely be returning. Thank you to everyone at Shogun for making our meals and our night.

The food was prepared fresh right in front of you. The theatrics of your cook and tissing food into your mouth never gets old. The atmoshpere feels very much like an asian inspired location. Also they have the big fire at your table. The soup was good and the protien choice was great. You get alot of food portion.

The food at Shogun Japanese Steak House was delicious—no complaints there. We ordered an appetizer sampler, two hibachi dinners, and a sushi roll. The hibachi chef was great, put on a fun show, and cooked everything to perfection. Unfortunately, the sushi roll never arrived and there was no follow-up from our server about it. We eventually had to cancel it because, well, it was clear they had forgotten. Mistakes happen and that’s okay!!
What really shocked me was at the end of our hibachi being cooked, we tipped the chef, assuming it would be shared among the staff, as is often the case in these types of restaurants. But imagine to our surprise when we were walking out of the dining area, when the server questioned why we didn’t leave her a separate tip. Excuse me? I’ve never encountered this level of entitlement from a server before. We explained that we left a tip with the chef and she responded with “And you didn’t want to leave a tip for me?” That is absolutely CRAZY.
Tipping culture has really gotten out of hand if servers now feel bold enough to ask customers about tips when one has already been given. A bit of tact and respect for a customer’s decision would go a long way.
In summary: great food and okay service overall, but that particular server's behavior was completely out of line and something I’ve never experienced before. I do not plan to return.

Usually love this place but recently went to grab some carry out food. One entree. Nothing else. Person who helped me was very kind and told me my total which seemed too high for what I ordered. She gave me the receipt after I agreed to the amount/paid and I figured maybe between fried rice upcharge and tax it would be 10$ over the math in my head. I tipped 5$ on the order and went home. Only later did I see she added a 15% gratuity without notice or permission to my bill. Added it in on the ticket like you would a food or drink item. So I wound up tipping >30% on a carry out order which is absolutely insane. This is also a very dishonest practice. I am one person with one entree not a party of 5 where gratuity is auto added per signage and menus. Had I been told a gratuity was added before handing over my card I would've been fine with it but this was dishonestly added in and honestly it feels like theft. I didn't order added gratuity and now I'm angry I added even more after being deceived and basically stolen from. I will not be back for this reason. The food is amazing but I value honestly above all else and this place has sadly fallen on very dishonest practices.

The wait staff was rude. I took BF there for gusto birthday. The one I went to in Chattanooga on my birthday a few years ago was awesome. They put on a show and did the birthday celebration. Not this one. The Lobster and Fileminion was overcooked. The cook didn't put on a show. He acted like he didn't want to be there at all. He basically threw the rice at us. When BF mentioned the overcooked Lobster and steak, they wouldn't fix it. I don't mind paying that price for good food and a good experience but that was horrible. They also didn't do the birthday celebration for him. It really was a bad experience. I will never darken tne door of a Shogun again.

8-24-24 7pm. Came here with my wife and some friends but we had already eaten recently, so I told friends I’ll just order some sushi instead of hibachi. The Asian waiter asked what dinner we were getting and I told her we would probably just order sushi rolls. She looked at us and paused with shock and disgust. This alone made us almost leave. Why would we eat at a place we weren’t welcome.
The hibachi chef himself was entertaining but the server ruined the entire experience. 20mins in after everyone who ordered hibachi dinners were eating, she came back to finally take our order. My wife ordered a sushi roll and naturally she then asked me for my order next and since it was a foreign name I told her “I’ll have the…” and as I’m opening the menu to tell her the proper name, i look back up and she walked away and didn’t come back for 10 minutes. She asked me later again but at that point I lost all interest.
Just because someone doesn’t order hibachi dinner despite having multiple other options on the menu, this is absolutely no way to treat customers. Three other things I noticed… while people were literally eating, the busgirl was trying to take the plates away from them and they had to constantly tell her not to. Also, once the hibachi cook left, he shut off the fans and since there’s no music it was just dead quiet between us and another family all eating at the same table. Extremely awkward silence.
Lastly, I know it’s common for gratuity on parties but really… gratuity on a party of 4 with one small child? Not even worth coming back for a second try.

Shogun Hibachi and Sushi sounds is a fun and delicious place to visit! Their hibachi chefs put on a entertaining show while cooking up fresh, flavorful food. The sushi is as equally good, and the service is kind. Overall, it is a great experience that I'd recommend to others. If you’re looking for a fun and exciting dining experience in Virginia Beach, Shogun Hibachi and Sushi is definitely worth checking out.

We ordered a bunch of sushi rolls and apps, and asked for them multiple times through the night. Never received them. The answer as to why was because the waitress said she forgot but be happy you got your other food. After the chef if you can call then that finished cooking what they called fried rice took about 40 minutes for the guy to cook a filet mignon and 4 scallops. Never seen a small steak cooker to medium rare take almost an hour. This place does not believe in flavor that’s for sure. But out of everything the worse part of the place are the staff they just really don’t give two $h!t2 about you. Extremely rude and shady as can be. Watch out for the 18% gratuity tax they sneak in after you give them your card! Will never go to a shoguns again in my life.

Awful experience. Since we arrived the waitress had an attitude and was rude. She forgot everyone’s appetizers and when we tried talking to the manager they said they didn’t charge us and get over it. At the end of the night they were trying to charge us 18% gratuity because we knew the people we were having dinner with but did not charge gratuity to the other 6 people at the table. They were trying to FORCE us to leave the waitress a tip. If you give bad service why should I spend more money for you??? Treat people right from the beginning if you want a tip and don’t force it on me. Definitely will not be returning and definitely do not recommend.

Horrible service!! While giving our order to the Waitress she continuously cut us off from talking to talk to coworkers, had to ask to get refills. Didn't give us half of the food we ordered. While she was getting frustrated she was pounding on the table with her fist while talking to other customer's at our table!

The staff was severely rude and since our table was full they assumed we all knew one another and charged us 18% gratuity…. When confronted they said well are you going to tip the cook? I reserved a room for 20 people for my gma's bday. Everyone was on time so I was already ready for a good night. I did hibachi no rice, sashimi and california rolls. The food was good my only gripe was the amount of food I received from hibachi. It definitely was a smaller portion than normal. It was a very small amount of veggies. I was full from the rolls and the sashimi and had a few bites of the hibachi and the remainder all fit in a small dessert to go box.

Ordered a number 10 off menu, Wanted no veggies substitute rice was told we couldn't do it. So just got what came with it. Wife did want the double rice no veggies. Food was good. The cook was awesome. The check came, asked about military discount, told we can't do that. Okay. Then found out was charged 6.00 for the double rice. Pricey. We ate at another Japanese Steak house same dinner 8.00 cheaper, military discount and not charged for the rice substitution. Food was same quality. We like to try restaurants and find the ones we will go back too. Unfortunately this one was a one time thing.

The cook prepared the food so slowly the rice was finished 10 minutes before we received the vegetables and then another 10 minutes before the proteins were served. No consideration for the food getting cold on the plate. Terrible experience and this restaurant need to add exhaust fans for all of the smoke.

First off! I intend to go to this restaurant tonight. I read reviews.. the last review was unfair, spiteful and just plain unnecessary.
20 people is a huge number for a restaurant to accommodate, especially in the hibachi environment. It's unfortunate that two guests had issues but how long do you wait? The whole restaurant that will be serving you. You could have eaten and the late arrival could work something out. You explained how satisfied you were with everything except one person which you clearly went head to head with. Of course we have no idea about your arrogance at that time in your review. The fact that you penalized the whole restaurant with a 1 star suggests to me you may have been complicate in this altercation. 1 star is spiteful and more than unreasonable as your own post is evident.
I will update this review after I visit this evening.
UPDATE: Arrived on time. Was seated by a great staff. The host came to the table several times to check in to ensure everything was OK. Everything was perfect . Great entertainment for kids also.

I’ll start first with the positive the wait staff and cooks are amazing… food was great. Drove 30mins from home past a dozen or more hibachi places to go here for my son’s birthday. First impressions are everything the person you see first in your dinning experience sets the tone for the entire meal.. The women who runs the front of this establishment is awful. With a party of 20 people you can’t expect not one single person to be running late but she will basically make you feel like you need to leave before they will wait on you because 1 couple from your party is running late. My son was uncomfortable and not happy to celebrate his birthday when he heard the way she was treating us. Not to mention when we made the reservation we asked for the cake and picture. Didn’t get it I guess because we had a couple caught at a bad accident which made them late they felt my son didn’t deserve the cake and photo. Instead of just seating 18 people she stood and argued with my husband. Just want people aware of how nasty she can be and how she is running this place. It’s a shame because the food is great and wait staff is amazing. They should really work on the front of the house staff and rethink this requirement with a reservation. We all work too hard for our money and with the cost of everything now I’d rather enjoy my meal and not be treated this way so we will now go elsewhere.

The hostess needs a reality check. She made my party of 7 leave because 1 was running behind after 10 minutes after I made a reservation and told us it would be another 3 hours. She told us she “didn’t have a table for us.” None of that was explained over the phone when I called. We were only told we “all had to be there to be seated.” Their customer service seems to be a mess. I called to ask if I could drop a surprise birthday cake off the night before and was told I could (I talked to someone different than hostess). I dropped it off and the hostess gave me a confused and annoyed look and said “just put it over there.” (I didn’t pay the $5 charge they have for bringing your own birthday cake either, that’s crazy) No wonder they are short staffed. The party in front of us had an issue with their reservation as well.

The customer service lacks as much as the seasoning. I am not quite sure how this place lands at 4.3 stars. The customer service was horrible; starting from the hostess, the helicopter mgr lady trailing right behind her with her awful stares to the poor spaced out overworked waitress. The chef cooked all meats and seafood to appropriate temperatures (steak, shrimp & scallops) however nothing popped my taste buds to have me come back or want more.

If I could give a negative star, I would give 5 of them. The middle aged Asian woman that seats patrons, is one of the rudest people I've encountered. She's in definite need of customer service training. The place is already outdated with a slight odor, so customer service should be of the utmost importance. Please do not eat at this hole in the wall restaurant. P.s if the front of the house looks this bad, I can only imagine how disgusting the kitchen is...

First time ever going . From walking into the doors to leaving . We had nothing but great customer service . We didn’t make reservations and had a seat for 7 ready in 10 minutes . While they were already busy . Everyone was friendly . Our server was new but wouldn’t know it because she was great . Our chef was AMAZING ! Everyone LOVED him. Food was PREFECT! All of kids had a blast . The shims catching in the mouth game was a big hit . My youngest daughter was glued the whole time and already asking to go back to see fire and the nice food man. Even leaving the host was taking to my 9 month old son. While going to my car to feed to my son one of the workers even offered to let me feed in his office because it’s cold out . I just loved the family vibe . I highly recommend if you are looking for a great place . Also sushi was on point too! Nothing but positive feed back here . Thank you for the workers and their great experience.

Found it super weird to be charged extra for fried rice? I have never been to a hibachi restaurant that didn’t serve fried rice included with the meal you’re already paying a premium for. Also, the portion sizes were much smaller than any hibachi restaurant i have ever visited before. I was here vacationing - is this a Virginia thing?

Well.....I have never been to a Hibachi restaurant before and let me tell you, the experience was great until one of our couples that we went with were screwed over on their final check. Their initial bill was $163, gratuity included (the restaurant adds a 18% service charge to the bill) . Once the card was swiped they swiped it for $192 as the total. He asked why the bill is now different from the initial bill and they stated that Sake is $22 a pop. The online menu stated it was $11 and he ordered two, making it $22. However, they charged him $44 instead. We asked to speak with a manager and instead they sent the hostess. The hostess was nervous and you could tell she was just fishing for things to justify the cost. Again, we stated that the online menu stated $11 per large Sake. The menu in the restaurant didn't even list a price. Long story short, the hostess tried to justify that their Sake is of high quality and due to COVID the price increased. She hastily explained this to us and just walked away. The patron then asked to speak with a manager again and the same hostess returned. I then asked to have this credited back to him and she returned with a $20 bill from her own money. We did not accept this bill because it really wasn't her fault. The manager finally came out after we stood our ground and still did not take care of this issue. Their customer service is horrible. Their waitress is obviously shady. Overall, it would have been a great experience if they didn't screw one of our couples over. Definitely will not return and all the bad reviews about this place seem to deal with customer service issues.....do what is right for the customer if you made a mistake.....BUT I DID CATCH THE SHRIMP WITH MY MOUTH!!!!

Okay I’m going to be brutally honest because I’m disappointed.
Bad things first, $30 for chicken & shrimp hibachi dinner which is fine:.. but normally hibachi portions are so large you’re leaving with a ton of left overs. Shogun did not provide that which was kind of annoying tbh for a few reasons which I’ll cover here. The staff was friendly but I thought it was odd the way the portions were handled at the table we were at. It was just my girl friend and I (at one end of the table) and we were sat with a family of 7 (which included 3 younger teen boys on the opposite end of the table). Each time the portions were given out, it started which the young boys. Which I understand.. their growing boys, but that also left the smallest portions for the two females on the end. When rice was given out, after the first round there was left over so the chef went around again but everyone got an extra scoop except us which ended up with about 1/4 scoop each. We were 2 of the 3 people that ordered shrimp at our table… yet every single person got 2 shrimp on their plate, so cool maybe some tasting for what you didn’t order right? NOPE…steak was prepared for other guests at our table but we were not offered a taste of that. Chicken was prepared at our table and after portions were served.. of course starting on the other end of the table first… we ended up with less than what I would guess was 4 oz of chicken for each of us. Which is just disappointing after waiting for everything to be cooked and given out and you’re left with the littlest bit. Why not alternate which side of the table you start with so people aren’t jipped being on the end? It felt a bit rude.
We also ordered the deep fried gyoza which tasted ok but was not a huge fan of the deep fried option and prefer pan seared. Good news? The food tasted good. Won’t be back to this location though, felt treated unfairly.

I have been to several hibachi restaurants,
this was the worst. Only order bottled beer or wine. Vegetables undercooked;overcooked chicken and shrimp; Salmon undercooked. The teriyaki sauce was sickening sweet.

Not enough chefs to accommodate hibachi. Table service super slow and waited excessively long for food. Hard pass.

We love coming here. The family gathers here for birthdays an holidays. They always take care of us, we never have any complaints. Great place to eat with ease knowing we will get great service
Visited 2 years ago
Only complaint is that it's hard to hear the chef/wait staff, it's kind of an open floor plan so it's pretty loud.

Frauds!! They’re charging 15% gratuity on their to go orders, the person Christina (or Christine) who took my order over the phone forgot to share this information, just like she also conveniently didn’t tell me the price of my to go meal, but right before me ordering told me I would have to pay over the phone! When she didn’t ask for my payment over the phone, I thought it was weird since she said I “had to pay for a to go order via the phone.”. Well she never took the payment via phone because they charged me $50!!!! For one freaking meal, their food isn’t even that great! When I arrived, Christina took my card so fast and while walking away said that will be $50, by the time I figured out what happened my card was charged and that’s when I told her I would never have agreed to pay $50
for one meal! They rushed me out and cut the lights off so fast, it was the most sketchy transaction I’ve ever experienced on a meal order, literally they’re crooks! We’ll continue to make the 30 min round trip to Sakura on Shore Drive, food is way better and about $30 bucks cheaper…

Their front desk Customer services was horrible- the front desk attendant (2) were disrespectful and spoke in a very demeaning way me and my family. Reservation were made to eat in - and as we waited and waited after being told we would be seated in 15 minutes the wait became an hour and after asking why so long of a wait - we were told we would have to wait another hour due to them being very busy. I couldn’t believe they would think we would continue to wait after one hour had passed-and to make matters worse the 2 attendants were speaking to my mother in a very demanding and disrespectful way when asking how much longer it would take. A third male attendants stated it would be an additional hour and stated we were more than welcome to wait or if we like we could go somewhere else . I was livid and I told him I will write a review of what took place and he said he was sorry. Me and my family went to PF Chang’s and enjoyed a wonderful meal for my parent’s birthday and were treated with the dignity and respect that should accompany spending your money. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone ever and nor will I ever return.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would, they were very rude to my family on my mother’s birthday. We came exactly on time even in the rainy weather, but they told us we should have got there 15 minutes early. Once we arrived the waitress who was suppose to assign us a table was very rude to us for no good reason. We were told it would be a 15 minute wait, once we questioned after waiting 25 minutes as to give them time to prepare we were told we had to wait 1-2 hours. We did not appreciate the rudeness we received from this restaurant facility members. We recommend that black families such as ours do not spend there money due to the terrible customer service we received. They really gave us the impression that we were being treated rudely because of our race. We do not recommend, end of story.

My first time at a hibachi place! The grill guy was very entertaining, the bartender was fantastic and very helpful. We had to wait about 40 min for a table but were able to sit at the bar. Sushi/sashimi is great quality. Drinks are yummy and reasonably priced. The waitress was very attentive. We were the last couple to leave the table she chatted with us about different types of sake and how she won't go anywhere else for sushi (she saw how we had ordered many rolls and sashimi before we even got to the hibachi). Overall great experience! My only critique is that I think the carpet in the hibachi areas should be replaced or removed as they looked dirty and something behind my seat was sticky.

Overall pleasant dining experience. The server and the hostess were fantastic! The grill guys were less than entertaining. Well, it's entirely possible. They were just extremely tired at the end of the day. It was a little disappointing. But it's entirely possible that is not how it always is. My husband loved his samurai drink, and we both truly enjoyed our food!

Had a reservation at 6 but still had to wait 25 minutes before they tried to seat our party of 5 people in a section meant for 4. There was clearly another table open but they refused to seat us there because there was 6 seats but only 5 of us. My elderly father was unable to even fit in the small and crowded booth they were seating us in. I will never return here. 0 stars for poor service and terrible management.

My favorite Hibachi restaurant. The food never disappoints. Get the sushi! It is so good. The wait is sometimes long so be prepared to sit for a while, even with a reservation

The food was great. Cooked to perfection. Chef was not entertaining. Was disappointed. Always had FANTASTIC chefs at the Shoguns in Columbus Georgia. My expectations were high and I was sorely disappointed. Our waitress left a lot to be desired. She had the personality of a rock. For me to be automatically charged an 18% gratuity was BS. I'm sure the owner/manager knows this is the only way the waitress would get tipped. No smile, no interaction with customers. Would not hand you anything but kind of tossed it to you. Did not gently place fortune cookie on try but pitched it on to the trays.
Needless to say, if I go back I'll make sure I don't have this particular waitress. As for the chef, yes, food was good and cooked to perfection.

This restaurant has gone way down in quality of food and service.
It used to be that with the meal, you would get a nice "dinner show" ...NOT ANY MORE !!!
We understand having to make a reservation and everything like that, but they now limit your dining experience to one hour ???
The chef, was late, getting to the hibachi grill, and that still counted towards the one hour time limit. The waitress was rude, and very short with us, while trying to decide exactly what we wanted. I guess their problem is that they are only open 5 days a week, and only 5 hours a night...
We felt very RUSHED, to get out the door, and they were disgusted that we only left a small tip, because the food and service did not warrant anything more. Please note, we always leave a generous tip, when it is warranted.
UNFORTUNATELY, WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING !!!
We predict that this establishment will be out of business before the end of 2023...

Little known fact about shogun is they have some of the best sushi in our area for a fair price. Absolutely delicious.

So my beautiful Woman in my life wanted hibachi so I researched places near me and even asked friends and everything lead us to this wonderful place. We made a reservation and showed up at the exact time. When we first walked in we were greeted by the hostess and offered to wait at the bar where we met the nicest bartender and were given the best options for drinks. My wife's phone was about to die and she allowed us to use her cable to charge her phone so she may take pictures of our exceptional night. Once we sat down we met the cutest mom and son to strike up a conversation while we waited for our chef. The show was very fun and entertaining. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection. One of the reasons why I say this is one of the people at our table can't have meat cooked after fish, so it is great that they accommodated them. It is a lot of food for one person. I really like the energy of the wait staff. This is a great after work, birthday, anniversary, or even celebrating a divorce dinner. We had a family celebrating a birthday, so of course we sang the song to perfect strangers willing to have a good time. They have souvenir glasses with signature drinks, something for anyone.

We visit offen and food and service are very good however now they are limiting your visit to 1 hour so very rushed. We were asked to leave 5 minutes after our 1 hour. Time starts immediately even know they wait to take orders until they fill up the table. Then you get salad and soup at same time. We use to enjoy the experience now it is not worth the price.

I love shogun so much and I’ve been coming here for 15 years! I come here multiple times a year but there’s definitely no better place to celebrate your birthday! Ray the owner is a fantastic guy and will always take care of you! Autumn is a wonder server also! This is my favorite place to eat and I highly recommended shogun as the best hibachi in Virginia Beach!

I know this sounds dramatic but this was seriously the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. Zero stars. I came in to grab dinner to go earlier this evening. I order a hibachi meal and a really simple sushi roll. I tell the hostess I only want shrimp tempura, cream cheese, and salmon only. I reiterate this as I place the order saying I know it’s very plain, and she says okay that’s fine. She tells me it will be an hour wait, so I leave & come back to pick up my order. The hostess calls to verify I’m willing to pay extra for the salmon making it $15 a roll. I say that’s fine, no problem. I ordered 3 total making it $45 for the sushi plus my other meal making it about $100 total. I come back to pick up, bring my sushi back across the street to where I’m eating & realize they’ve put avocado & cucumber on my sushi. So I walk back and the hostess tells me that there is nothing they can do because “their” tempura comes with these things automatically. I emphasize I specifically said I only wanted these 3 things, and even watch the other hostess write it down. She again says they will not remake it & they will not refund me. So due to THEIR mistake that they could not admit to, I wasted $45 and was told too bad.
I come back a few minutes later with my husband to see if he can get them to budge, and the manager says the best they can do is give us $20. Not even half of the total of the messed up order. I have never seen a restaurant dig their heels in like this and doesn’t at least attempt to resolve an issue, until 2 different people lay out the fact that this is the restaurant’s mistake. Scammy, rude, & a bummer that this is how they treat their customers. Don’t support places that treat people like this & don’t have any regard for people’s hard earned money.

Beware, scammers work here! they gave a card to pay and the workers wrote down the cvv code. and as it turned out later, they paid with it 3 times. once in the amount of $57, the second $417 paid for the hotel, the third the same hotel in the amount of $1670!

WOW!
A tiny bit of a wait,... but it was well worth it!
Simon... er... Andy? ;-)... did a FANTASTIC job of preparing our meal. The most delightful Japanese restaurant experience we’ve ever had. What an engaging personality. Eureko (sp?) served us perfectly. Others were also greatly kind!
Will no doubt return soon.
Price was reasonable for the great food and awesome experience!

Do yourself a favor and do not come to this place. Tables are set for 8 people and we came in with a party of 8. They tried to squeeze in ten people into a table for 8. The manager asked us to move to a space away from the actual hibachi grill. I asked to speak to the owner, and he literally laughed in my face and told me he was done dealing with me. He also insulted me and told me I couldn't do simple math. On top of everything, the food made us sick, and we saw roaches running across the floor.

Had a party dinner with family. Was charged wrong for the food. Cops had to get involved and was threatening us if we don’t pay for it we will be charged for dine&ditch. The waitress was very rude along with the chef. They’re customerservice there was horrible. It’s one thing to make mistakes. It’s another thing to treat people/customers like that. All for what, money!?!

We really like the hostess, our waitress not so much, she was throwing everything at us and slamming our drinks down, we were as polite as can be and she was just rude, out cook was nice and the food was good...came time for the check and the waitress informed us that 18% was automatically added because of our party size (which we were fine with) she then stated that we needed to leave more than the 18%, well we didn't because you were throwing our food at us and acting annoyed that you had to serve us
