We love this restaurant! Hands down the BEST sushi/sashimi in Hampton Roads area and abroad. You know it’s going to be a quality sushi restaurant when the sushi chef owns it. It’s a small intimate atmosphere, and their staff is only a few people. Everyone who works there is like a family. Every dish including the desserts are made in house, and they use fresh seasonal produce sourced from local farms. If you’re not 100% a fan of sushi or fish they have some incredible pork, beef and chicken dishes as well. Sometimes they’ll feature Kobe beef cuts. Yum! Our family loves sushi and most of the time when we order takeout or dine in we give them a budget for a sushi platter, and tell them what our likes and dislikes are and Chef Mike will create an amazing assortment for us. A home run every time. During cooler months they’ll have pork belly ramen, which my daughter craves it’s so good. All around I highly recommend Sushi Aka to everyone who visits Suffolk or lives in the area. I’ve met people from Richmond who make it a special point to eat there. It’s a gem in downtown Suffolk. Support local small businesses and help local math!

We had a really good experience. Food is awesome and service is good. The atmosphere is a bit dark lighting so elders have to use a flashlight on their phone to see. First, the chef offers a tasty free tuna and avocado starter. I got a Roppongi drink and it was great! The chicken teriyaki is SO good. The rainbow roll is so good too!! It’s dessert week so they offered a banana split and strawberry cheesecake and they were to DIE for! Definitely recommend checking this place out! Mike is awesome!

Well this place was disappointing. My wife ordered the teriyaki chicken which honestly is hard to mess up that kind of dish. The salad it came with was pretty good. I ordered the Adam Bomb roll which was some kind of tuna, crab and shrimp tempura concoction. It was not good. I originally was incorrect thinking the crab inside was cooked tuna but was told otherwise. That actually made the roll worse because when I took a bite I immediately got a "canned" meat flavor. Idk this for certain but it definitely seems like the crab is canned. But the roll as a whole just wasn't good, I opted in to not order anything else. I was turned off by that crab, wherever it came from.

The most authentic sushi and sashimi place I ever tasted here in Virginia! We were station in Japan for 3 years and I fall in love with their culture, place and food. We’ve been here 5 years now, so far this is the best place I found. This place is so amazing and so authentic sushi, specially the sashimi! AKA is local and own by the chief that work closely with the famous Japanese sushi chef from Philadelphia! I don’t know if you’re that craze with sushi and sashimi to drive an hour away but it’s all worth it! It’s the closest one from authentic Japanese sushi and sashimi! From their salad, appetizer, main course, up to dessert (red bean cream brûlée) ! Even their alcohol is really good!.
Highly recommended!

Excellent! We've been dying for a real sushi spot....Finally! Everything was fabulous! We had the chef's sashimi/sushi combo, uni soup, toro, cheesecake- try it all! Fish was fresh, there was a wonderful selection. Our waitress was also so sweet. My only complaint is that we did pay for something that we never received as we ordered a lot, so something got lost in the shuffle of bringing many dishes out. We will still return, we absolutely enjoyed our meal!

This is an amazing restaurant for a date night! The sushi and sushimi here is amazing. Just a note they serve fresh crab in their rolls. Everything was perfect including the service. I would definitely will be going back!

We decided to try this place on a whim and it eneded up being a pleasant experience!
The service was friendly (we did have a waitress in training, but she did well)
The place was clean and inviting,
The food was absolutely delicious. I had never had the rolls they offered before and I was not disappointed.
My only suggestion would be to improve the menu as in it was a little difficult to read/decipher. Still not a deterrent from returning.
I would suggest making the names of the dishes in bold and the ingredients not bold.
So over all 9/10
Will definitely return!

It's a small Japanese sushi restaurant located at historical downtown Suffolk, the food is amazing, I have been to lot of Japanese restaurants in my life but the food here it's in another level, the taste, the food presentation and service.
I heard the owner/chef Michael worked at renowned chef Morimoto 's restaurant.
They many options on the menu and some secret menus that you can ask your server, I tried the pork belly fried rice which was AMAZING, I never knew a pork belly could taste sooo good, the fat melt in your mouth. It's the best fried rice I had in my life.
Also, try the sushis and rolls they are amazing! (Suggestion, rolls 239 and fuji rolls).

We got the calamari and one of the appetizer specials. Both were awesome. The dipping sauce for the calamari was on another level!
My friend and I both got platters, he got the 40 piece sashimi combo and I got the chef's choice platter. The food was absolutely stunning. The quality was immaculate, some of the best sushi I've had outside of Japan.
I ordered dessert, got the blackberry swirl icecream, it was stunning!
All in all an outstanding experience. I'll definitely be back and I cannot express how highly I recommend this place.

I’ve been here three times so far and it’s always amazing. The service, food and ambience is just perfect whether you’re on a date or out with coworkers.
They usually have Toro (fattier tuna cut) and last night we were able to try Wagyu beef for the first time, which was definitely worth trying. This place is an experience worth talking about. From the appetizers and cocktails (the bahn mi, the Hiroshima heat, the rappongi etc) to the entrees and the sushi (salmon with shitaki risotto), it’s delicious. Make sure to try the specials too!
You can spend $100 and have a great dinner, but I highly recommend making this restaurant a special occasion and going all out. Their selection is one of the best. Trust the chef and the servers. They’ll take care of you!

Be aware!!!! First and last time….Ordered California roll, was told full of crab meat by waitress. If it was crab meat it had to artificial. Ordered pork dumpling soup. Did not taste like restaurant food, tasted like something at someone’s house, basic. Ordered glass of Riesling. This was the best thing on the menu, glass size pretty large. Biggest issue waitress by the name of Christine automatically kept my change. I did not give her permission to keep my change!!!

I had some o toro, chu toro, uni, and a few rolls. Toro and uni have been hard to come by so having them both was great. You can tell that the chefs have been trained in traditional japanese sushi by the implementation of oba leaf, locally sourced seafood and Japanese mayo in maki. The food was great and deserving of 5 stars. However…. (Sorry i’m a tough critic), the rice was less than perfect. The grains were too long and packed too densely when used in the nigiri patties and maki. Unfortunately it was served at or bellow room temperature which exaggerated the starchy taste and feel that often accompanies long grained rice. I honestly believe (want to believe) that this was a fluke. Everything else was just so perfect.

Stopped in for a late dinner about 8pm with my daughter. We were greeted and seated as sonn as we entered. The waiter was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu offerings and specials. We ordered seaweed salad and hamachi kama (grilled tuna collar) for shared appetizers. We ordered the Sashimi platter as an entrée. All the food arrived in a timely fashion and was extremely fresh and tasty. I would recommend this restaurant for fresh Sushi/Sashimi and competent staff. The only drawback was how dimly lit the dining room was, as it made reading the menu quite difficult.

Visited once and will never go again. Wife and I have been to alot of sushi places in the area, but this one has one or the highest prices out of everyone. We had a pickup order and were told 25 minutes. We showed up at 30 minutes just to be safe and still ended up waiting 15 more minutes. Usually not a big deal, but in this situation we were on a time crunch and had to be somewhere. Sushi was not bad, but there are definitely better options for the price around the area.

Good sushi. Expect to pay between $15-22 per specialty roll. Deserts were large and rich. Highly recommend. Only down-side, there is no kids menu. My young kids love sushi but I like the option of getting them something less expensive.

Fantastic first visit celebrating a birthday. Will certainly be back again. Sushi AKA has your typical traditional sushi offerings but also has a huge selection of fusion style dishes. The quality of the fish and the rice was top notch. We had fantastic service even on a busy weekday night. I do wish they had traditional seating at a sushi bar counter but that area is more of a service / kitchen area for the restaurant. Very understandable with the size of the space. Also had some nice saki offerings I have not indulged in before and a solid price point. Cheers.

A wonderful dining experience. It started with a beautifully decorated building that has tons of character. The service was amazing and our server was on top of everything all night long! The adult beverage selection was very nice with a great selection of beers and drinks. They were well paired and we'll poured. The food was out of this world. The specials, the egg plant and dumplings were killer! Picking entree's was the hardest part. So many good selections and every one we ordered was outstanding. The cowboy roll was great, the bluefin and California rolls were delicious as well. This should be a must stop if you're looking for a great dining experience.

Upon arriving @ 5:45 pm to an empty restaurant we were greeted an asked if we had reservations and sat at out table. Within two minutes of sitting down we were asked how long we were going to be there. We asked the waitress to explain the menu to us because it was not first timer friendly. She began to tell us that only half the menu was available because the cook was hurt. Needless to say we got up and left. I can't comment on the food but the atmosphere was less than desirable.

Remarkable! The food isn't just good - it's AMAZING! I am a harsh restaurant critic - chefs fear me. I can be brutal, and instill blood curdling cries of agony from restaurateurs. So when I say this place is amazing, you should believe me. Above all, the braised pork belly appetizer was one of the most delicious and succulent things I have ever tasted. Everything was fresh, delicious, and well prepared. Generous portions as well. Highly recommended.

Trying nearly every sushi joint in the area, Sushi Aka is clearly the best sushi restaurant in Hampton Roads.
For starters, Aka is one of few HR joints that can correctly label their pieces as sushi, sashimi, and rolls... I went with the sushi pieces mainly. I ordered the tuna, kenpachi, uni, smoked tako, and a specialty tuna roll: The Adam Bomb. Each piece I tried was unbelievably tender and fresh. The smoked flavor of the octopus worked so well. The chef saved the uni for last as it was the last in the restaurant; it did not disappoint.
The waitstaff was extremely nice and visited us regularly asking if we needed anything. The whole team worked very well with limited staff and a busy dinner rush, not to mention a thunderstorm!
I will definitely be visiting again soon.

HANDS DOWN BEST SUSHI WE HAVE EVER HAD!!! My daughter and I placed a to go order, usually we go to Iron Chef but the last few times the selection has been limited and the quality has been subpar. So we opted to try Sushi aka. We placed out order said it would be about 40 minutes, when we arrived it was ready. The staff was exceptional, called me by name during our brief interaction and on my way out. The atmosphere was intimate and beautiful. Now the sushi itself was phenomenal! We got a couple of rolls and a salad, but ingredients were super fresh and high quality, perfect rice very fresh, presentation for to go was impressive. Also the only time I got take and had enough ginger, Wasabi, and dressing for my order. The use of fresh ingredients made for the most delicious sushi. Sushi aka is our new spot, and we look forward to trying out other items on the menu.

I do not know where to start.
I have been to Japan many times, and I guess my expectation for sushi is too high for city of Suffolk. Drove 35 mins to get to the restaurant. Our kids had chicken teriyaki noodles, and we had sushi and sashimi platter. Some part of the noodles were uncooked, but i ate them anyway. The quality of sushi is Ok. Portion? absolutely ridiculous, barely anything. I would give three start for the decoration and how well they were able to match the plate color with the sushi, five star only for the wasabi. The best part of the dinner was the wasabi, which is sad, but it is what it is. Also on the menu chief special roll was spicy tuna? I thought that was funny. If you have high sushi expectation this is not the place. You will be disappointed. And not kids friendly at all. Don't even have a single high chair. If you want to eat sushi, please avoid and just go to sushi King.

The outdoor seating was very pleasant though at times fairly loud because of the busy street. My dog was welcome outside. The servers were very polite and attentive - especially when customizing a roll. My friend ordered the lump crab California roll with crispy onions on top. I ordered the cowboy roll and island roll. The island roll was delicious - would definitely reorder. The cowboy roll was unique and tasty, but I wouldn't get it again.

THE ABSOLUTE KING of SUSHI!! I have never been a fan of sushi....the one (and only one) experience I had with this food that everybody seems love, let’s just say didn’t “set” well with me. After that, I never once wanted to ever try sushi again...despite how much I was begged! Fast forward to a couple of days ago, being the loving sister I am, decided I would go and try this sushi (even though deep down I knew I was probably going to have a puking fiasco). I let my sister pick the goods for me and just held my breath waiting for the entree. Once presented, the presentation was beautifully displayed...almost to the point I didn’t want to touch it and mess it up. Trying to remember how to hold chopsticks, I finally dusted off my skills and was able to hold the delectable slice of sushi in between the 2 tiny posts and dip it into the soy sauce that is cutely served in a white pot almost seemingly made for tea. At this point, I’m almost freaking out because I’m not sure how this is about to go, but once in my mouth, it just melted away. This is by far the sushi I wish I had experienced my very first go at it! You can tell it is made with passion and precision. The details in everything are phenomenal and the atmosphere and (of course) the staff make the experience ten times better! I will revisit every time I’m in town visiting my sister (whether she’s at work or not)! Bravo Sushi aka! 🎉

My experience at Sushi Aka can only be described as Sublime.
The sushi chef is humble about his talent, but he may be one of the best sushi chefs the world has ever seen. He meticulously searches for and hand picks only the best fish and ingredients, spends countless hours before the restaurant opens prepping, and has an attention to detail that is unmatched. You can taste this in his sushi and other dishes. Also, this man can cut green onions impressively thin. I was very impressed by this. No one wants to take a bite of a chunk of green onion.
The first bite I took of his sushi rocketed me from my seat and transported me to another dimension. In this new dimension I was greeted by omnipotent and omniscient sushi beings. These sushi beings taught me the meaning of life and with them I spent thousands of years learning the intricacies of the universe itself. When I was ready, I plummeted back into my earthly body and found myself sitting in Sushi Aka. Was I in heaven? I’m not sure, but that out of body experience I had lived through taught me the meaning of life: Perfect Sushi. The other bites were good too.
The staff is also wonderful. They go above and beyond and provide excellent service. The whole experience was on par with how great the food was. I’m surprised this place doesn’t have national / international attention.
I would describe myself as someone who really enjoys trying new restaurants, and well traveled. Out of every place in the U.S. or Europe I have ever eaten, this is by far the best food and experience I have ever had.

Outstanding! Best sashimi deluxe in a long time! Five kinds of fish, octopus, fingerling squid and, I believe scallops, if not, very tender, sweet clams.

Really great, fresh sushi. Staff were fantastic. They even helped me find a saki that I enjoyed! Overall an amazing experience. We are definitely coming back.

Best sashimi tuna! Very fresh. Excellent! Highly recommend!

Excellent experience! Get the Pom Pom cocktail and edamame appetizer. The cowboy roll is perfect for those who don’t like ~fish~ in their sushi.

Beautifully prepared sushi! Ate here way b4 covid. The HIGHLY QUALIFIED Sushi chef.
The restuarant is tiny but quality of sushi prevails over size of the quaintness of the restuarant. Normally, sushi runs around $65+ per couple to dine. This restuarant is a little more pricey. Eating here for two at the sushi bar with no alcoholic beverages, the tab about $95 w/o tip. And when dining here: DO NOT expect fast food service or just to grab a quick bite or a pop in. Time and quality run hand in hand here with the SUSHI.
However, they do have their OFF days, the poor service of waitstaff or "lack of", then reflects on the temperature of food which is sacrificed coming from their TINY kitchen, sadly.
They are OPEN on certain days and times. CALL AHEAD to get RESERVATIONS or ask about availability because they may have difficulty finding space/time to seat any walk-ins. And of course NO MASKS NO SERVICE, upon entry. ENJOY!

We drove about 35mins each way and I neglected to make reservations. I’m extremely grateful that they still accommodated us. However it all went downhill from there. I feel like we were very understanding that they had a slight dinner rush. With three servers and half capacity (due to Covid restrictions), there was no reason for such terribly subpar service.
It took 15mins for anyone to acknowledge us. Another 20mins to get our drinks. The mojito tasted like mint soda and my martini was short served. I understood that they were busy so I went inside and put in our dinner order. 45mins later, we finally got our soups and appetizer. The soup was lukewarm, if that. 90mins total and we finally received our entrees. Our server was less than attentive, if that. I would have brought this up to our server while we were there, however, we were just ready to go home at this point.
The three stars are for the main entrees. Like I said, I’m grateful they accommodated us but they should’ve said turned us away if they couldn’t handle a two-top (my 3yo daughter only had the edamame and didn’t even eat her rice). I’m pretty disappointed that I drove all that way to only feel like I left wanting more.

Very carefully prepared sushi. Rice was just right, fish was very fresh. The lunch special had a good variety of favorites. Homemade ice cream was delicious, too! Server was very nice and attentive. They have a few noodle dishes, but most of the menu is fish and seafood. Some vegetarian options available.

Ate outside, everything was excellent including the service. The pork belly was one of the best I've ever eaten. Can't wait to come back

Make sure you make a reservation. Had to sit outside in the cold because we didn't have one but the sushi was phenomenal.

Incredible place for lunch and dinner. Lunch bowls are my go to as I am usually there during lunch. They are always changing up their menu so it never gets stale. Definitely worth checking out.

Incredible sushi restaurant. An excellent place to try new things. Most of the menu items have a unique twist (i.e. the edamame has lime zest on it and the shrimp tempura roll has goat cheese. They are both game changers in case you're wondering.) and everything is made fresh to order. This is not a place to grab a cheap, quick bite of sushi. This is a place to take your time, savor, and enjoy the company and atmosphere. PS. It's worth a visit for the salmon carpaccio (sp?) alone. Desserts and cocktails are great too. 👌🍣🍹🍨

The sushi was absolutely perfect. This was my first visit and the sushi was everything I heard about it. However...the Angry wings? Good grief. They were awful. The chicken was old. It was like they were stored in a regular, kitchen freezer for months, thawed then cooked. I couldn’t enjoy the fabulous flavor because the chicken was just...bad. That was a huge disappointment to this Philadelphia foodie.

Original post: Staff was polite and welcoming. The sushi was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be back for more.
2nd visit. I called in an order to pick up on my way home from work at 4pm. 3 rolls. She told me she needed to call me back. She called back about 7 mins later and took my order then said "Let me ask the kitchen how long it will take." She came back and said "okay it will be ready at 730 pm." I said "wait, like in 3 hours?" She said yes the kitchen is busy. I asked again to clarify she didn't have it confused for 3 rolls of sushi, it would take 3 and a HALF HOURS. I went to Iron Chef instead for a 20 min wait and $20 cheaper.

Hands down the best sushi we've had so far in the Hampton Roads area and the owner and staff were very nice. I'd recommend going on an off peak night and sitting at the sushi bar. Can be a little on the pricier side (though there are some cheaper options on the menu) but you definitely get what you pay for.

Omg I could live here fish is so fresh. Only thing that makes me sad about this place is mondays and sunday when they are closed. It's a monday as I'm writing this review, and am terribly craving that delishious fish; knowing there is no restaurant that can substitute what they have to offer.

The food was great! Everything tasted delicious and was out in a timely manner. My one suggestion would be that the host be a little more courteous. He was rude when he asked if we had a reservation (it was our first time—we did not—and we arrived at 4:45!). He said, “I hope you don’t plan on staying for more than two hours because we are full.” If I hadn’t been craving sushi, we would have left. Other than that, it was a great experience. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable.

The food is great, pricy however, fresh sushi is always better. Service was excellent, gets a little crowded and backed up at times, but such is a small restaurants like this. Only issue I have is with the drinks the only beverage that has free refills is water, so if you enjoy soda or tea with your food this isn't the place. They give a can of soda and a "Pure Leaf" tea bottle about the size of a baby bottle, but that's the only issue I have, otherwise a wonderful restaurant to visit if you have the money
