Sushi Experience №1

Let me start off by saying that the experience was not very good. We waited over an hour for 2 sushi rolls. We knew what we had wanted when we sat down so there was little time spent getting the food ordered along with our drinks. The waiter was not in a good mood nor did he check on the table. He sat at the bar playing on his phone and seemed like we were bothering him when trying to get a refill. We were just about to get up and pay for the drinks and leave due to extremely slow service and bad experience with our waiter, but the cashier came over to update us that our food was just about to come out. We had been sitting there for an hour and eight minutes before our food touched the table. The food was alright but the experience was just ruined due to the lack of service and communication on our order.

I've lived all over and the only other place I had sushi this good was Hawaii. The quality is exceptional. We always order the boat and the cuts are always melt-in-your-mouth. Whenever I order omakase, I'm never disappointed. Even my 20-something sons recognize the superior quality and they don't have terribly discerning palates. They also love the serene and peaceful atmosphere. Even when multiple tables are seated, it retains a quiet ambience. Ben Gui is a reason to live in Roanoke. It's pure pleasure for the senses on all levels and not something I ever expected to find when returning to my home region, southern Appalachia.

I ate here today for the first time. The food was okay, nothing sensational. The waitress was rude. The entire restaurant was empty, but anyone who came in was seated next to us. The prices on the menu are incorrect, so anything you order will be about 2 dollars more. There are no prices for beverages. You must pay for water, as it is only sold in a bottle. I will not be going back. There is nothing spectacular about this place at all. Head to Asia Cafe for really good 🍣.

I have been going here for almost 10 years. Pre covid, this was by far my favorite sushi place in the new river valley. Went for the first time in person since covid. Asked for water and was brought 1.50 bottled water and told there was no ice since the ice machine was broken. After reading reviews, it appears the ice machine has been broken for at least a year. Left before ordering. Do not feel I can trust a place that has no water available for free to not cut corners on the quality of their fish.

I came in today for lunch and ordered a 12 piece sushi for 17. I asked what drinks they had since there were none listed on the menu. Come to find out they sell can drinks for 1.50 so I asked for water because it's really unacceptable for a place to not have free refills. Then I was informed that they sell bottles of water for 1.50. mind you they have empty glasses at the bar all they had to do was put some ice and water in one.. My order came with a salad so I asked for ranch. They don't sell ranch just a ginger dressing. I'm pretty upset at this point and have told myself I'm never coming back or recommending this place to anyone. Honestly if I wasn't there with anyone I would have got up and left. To top it all off the hill was 2 dollars higher than the price listed on the menu! So they had an obviously irritated customer who didn't order any drink and told them to keep the salad since I wouldn't be eating it and didn't give me a discount off of the original price of 17 and instead up charged me 2. This is the worst place I've been to without question. The sushi was pretty good but that's the only thing positive I'll say about this place. As far as I'm concerned their service is horrible and they're thieves. If I could give this place a negative star I would.

I use to eat here often and loved it but the quality and service has been going downhill lately. They now charge $1.50 for water, and the food just isn’t as fresh. My miso soup tasted reheated, the salad was wilted and soggy, and they changed the spider roll to just 5 pieces and no crunchy outer layer like it use to be. The quality is poor and it just seems like they don’t care.
I won’t be recommending this place anymore.

This places is awful. Let's start with the service. After initially taking our drink order we waited another 20 mins before they came to take any other orders. The resturaunt was half empty on a Friday and they only had two servers and one sushi chef. Once they took our order they brought out one of three appetizers and then the other two maybe 10 mins later. We asked that our sushi come out family or boat style but our 6 rolls came out two at a time at very random times. The miso soup tasted sweet and burnt. The rolls tasted old and all had horrible after taste. It was just plain nasty. I'm still burping up a horrible after taste the next day while writing this review. I'm from NYC and don't expect a little mountain town sushi place to be anything close to this but for $150 I should have had sushi that was just one step above grocery store sushi. I am going to get sushi from Krogers to get Ben Gui sushi taste out of my mouth.

Food is well below subpar, sushi was tiny and dry, tempura was fried like it was made in KFC. The “teriyaki” chicken was just orange chicken basically. Go to Kabuki or Cafe Asia instead.

Menu was quite confusing. Once you make your selection you must look on the back page and search to find “current price” because as they have not updated their menus in 6 years (their words.) Surely Ben Gui makes enough profit to update their menus with correct pricing! Additionally, unless you want beer or wine, your beverage will not be served in a glass. Sodas are in cans and water is in bottles. No ice is available. That “fast food” level should come with cheaper prices. Instead plan to spend $40-50 for two. We won’t be back.

I didn’t want to leave a bad review. But reading others & seeing that the problems we encountered tonight have been going on for at least a year? The 4.5-star rating is no longer an accurate reflection. It’s been a while since the last time we ate here, & the decline over the years since our last visit is noticeable.

Bottom line: Overpriced & underwhelming.

The food is fine. Our group had sushi rolls, fried rice, gyoza, chicken teriyaki, a bento box… It was okay, some things better than others, but nothing was amazing. The rolls I got all seemed pretty small compared to what we’ve had at numerous other places. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t something we’d go back for. The others felt more or less the same way about their entrees.

The atmosphere is okay but is not updated, trendy, or upscale. You don’t feel you’re walking into a nice establishment that’s going to charge the prices they charged. The whole place needs a facelift.

As others have mentioned over the past year or so, we were told the ice machine was broken when we asked if we could get a glass of ice to go with the canned soda. Our only drink options were bottled or canned drinks — $1.50 per can of soda ($3.50 for the orange soda my son ordered; prices for drinks weren’t on the menu, and we didn’t know his was costing that much, but oh well). Nothing refillable was offered—not water, fresh brewed tea, etc. (Btw, soy sauce makes you thirsty, but we squeezed by on as little drink as possible and then got fountain drinks at a gas station after we left).

The menu prices are NOT accurate unless you play a game of seek & find with the back page, which is the only place on the menu that reflects accurate pricing. So, find what sounds good on the first few pages, then flip to the back page & try to find the name of the item you’re considering to see the current cost. And don’t miss the details about dinners no longer including soup or salad, or the $1 upcharge for extra ginger and wasabi.

The menus would be so easy to update and change out the inserts by just printing new pages; why put the customers through all this confusion and risk making your restaurant look bad? Just fix it. It wouldn’t be costly or time-consuming. I almost wanted to offer to just do it for them. Now I see it’s been this way for a long time, so clearly, somebody simply doesn’t care. And it shows.

For what we paid, we could’ve eaten at one of the steakhouses or upper-scale casual restaurants around here. This was absolutely not worth that at all.

Overall, we left feeling very disappointed that we paid nice prices for not a nice meal. This was not our first time at Ben Gui, but it was likely our last, I’m sorry to say.

I have gone a few times to this place. Very good food, but they charge you for water. They do not offer tap water (we specifically asked) only bottled, which is pretty crazy for a restaurant. Their menu prices aren’t 100% accurate, but they do have a statement in the back of the menu explaining that the prices have increased due to inflation. They say the menu hasn’t changed in years, however id argue that changing prices = changing menu. I feel like it wouldn’t be too hard to update the physical menus. Between that and charging for bottled water it seems like they nickel and dime you to make the bill higher. Again, the food is delicious, but it seems like from other reviewers this has been going on for awhile which is a shame. If they changed these things it would definitely be a 5/5 review.

I ordered through that stupid "BringMeThat" service and ordered a certain amount of rolls, but when I went to pickup, one was missing. The lady (Im assuming is the manager) was very rude, saying that the order was correct, period, when I clearly had the actual receipt on hand with my full order shown. She insisted, again in a very rude tone, that I was incorrect, saying something about a lady from "BringMeThat" called them and ordered one roll less... I was shocked on how bad can you treat a customer, I really DONT CARE who called who, I want my full order. Turned out to be a confusion between that stupid web service and the restaurant. I can understand, but thats not an excuse to treat bad your customers. I paid another roll to complete the order, and to get that lady out of my sight.... btw: The food wasnt good either way. Not returning ever again.

First time trying this restaurant, and we were more than disappointed. My first impression walking in was how quiet it was. There was no music playing and 2 tables seated. We got to our table and the waitress seemed friendly enough. My partner and I asked for a water and an unsweet tea, and we were surprised when we received a bottle of water and a bottle of gold peak. No refills. No disclaimer about how all they provide are bottled drinks. I was thinking at that point that maybe we should go somewhere else, but decided to stay because it was the day before Valentine’s Day and already 7pm, plus we hadn’t been here before and we were hungry… so we committed to seeing it through.
We ordered the house pork dumpling soup, a special sushi roll, a shrimp tempura roll, and yaki soba with a small salad. I received the salad first, which was basically your standard, run-of-the-mill pre-packaged, pre-cut iceberg lettuce and carrot mix with a brownish colored carrot-ginger dressing. Then we got the soup. It appeared big enough for 2, the broth was decent, but you had to work your spoon around an excessive amount of sliced white onions to get to any broth. And the dumplings were basically pre packaged frozen gyoza thawed and thrown in the bowl. It was the worst soup I’ve had in a long time.
The sushi rolls were just OK, plain rice and shrimp tempura, and my partners roll was soft shell crab with a spicy tuna topping. Underwhelming, but ok. The yakisoba was probably the most disappointing…. It was probably a 50/50 ratio of thin noodles to what seemed like the exact same lettuce mix that my salad was made of, stir fried into the noodles, barely any chicken. It was awful as it sounds.

When we got the bill, every food item was about $3 more than what was listed in the menu… plus the cost of the bottled drinks. My partner asked about the prices and complained. They acted like there was a sign on the front door about price increases… but it was all very inconspicuous and the fact they gave us a menu with lower prices listed was very misleading. The food wasn’t really worth the listed prices, let alone the increase prices. There was no honor given to the menu we received, so we paid what they had us pay. At the same time, another customer came up with their bill and complained about the same thing!! We likely won’t be coming back to this place.

I do hope for them that they work out the kinks and revamp their menu and communication tactics. Owning a business is hard and I feel for them, but they need the feedback to try to improve. And customers need to be made aware.

If you don’t go here frequently and are already aware of the price increases on their menu, be aware. I stopped by for the first time yesterday and was shocked at how much the bill ended up being. Apparently the menu prices are 8 years old and they have an inconspicuous notice that the prices have increased. There are accurate prices ONLY on the very last page of the menu, which is very misleading in my opinion. They need to do a better job at informing customers. Like other people say, if you ask for water they give you bottles and charge extra. The food was okay but not worth what they charged. Atmosphere was enjoyable.

This my first time writing a review for a restaurant. Tbh their sushi was good but I don’t recommend their fired rice or any other plate. it was more than bad. I asked if I can get something else instead , or get my money back. She said no. A Big no
They give a bottle of water if you asked for water and it’s 1.50$ each.
Their prices have changed and I was charged over 20$ extra this place is a nightmare. If I can give it a 0 star I would have. I wish I knew that lady’s name that acted like she doesn’t understand what I’m saying but I think she is a regular there.

Disappointing! Ordered water. My dinner companion and I were brought bottled water that we were each charged $1.50 for. My dinner companion ordered the shrimp tempura dinner. The menu stated that the dinner came with soup or salad. My dinner companion was charged for the salad. When we questioned the server he said there was a disclaimer on the menu that said there was now a charge for the soup and salad. Also, the dinner does not come with rice. Rice comes with a dinner in any other Japanese restaurant. Don't call a meal a dinner if it's just a large appetizer. Also, the prices on the menu are not current. Clearly, the restaurant needs to reprint their menus. I had the shrimp tempura appetizer. The coating on the shrimp and vegetable was very heavy.

Sushi was solid but the bait and switch wasn’t cool. I’ve never ordered water at a sit down restaurant and been charged $1.50 for it. We got the receipt at the end and everything was several dollars more than what the menu said. When I asked, they told me the menu was 10 years old and the new ones haven’t came in yet. I understand that prices have increased and have no problem with that, but tell me that when you give me the menu.

I am visiting the area and have eaten Sushi all over the US. The waitress was curt with me whrn I asked for ice water with lemon. They "do not have ice" here. People drink out of soda cans. Not even glass. I ordered Miso soup at it took forever and arrived cold. Then I ordered unagi roll and sashimi to start and the rude waitress said "We are busy. So if you want more you will have to wait." Unagi roll was perhaps the most poorly executed roll I have EVER received. Anywhere. Falling apart. Not properly pressed. No sesame. Minute in size as well. The Hamachi was dark in color and not Premium cut and not very cold. The ginger slices 3 in total were orange in color not fresh. And the Wasabi was inconsistent in heat..so it was old or badly pressed. The waitress bumped up the price everything on my check by 50 cents and thought I would not notice. I considered it her tip. I have no idea where these other reviews come from but poor execution, quality, kindness and service is reason for this review.

We just ate at Ben Gui, their ice machine was broken and we ordered water, they charged us $1.50 per water (from Sam’s) they never offered water without ice for free. We asked for squid (inka) salad he said he can’t make that tonight. We ordered the Sashimi Deluxe $23.50 the menu said it comes with soup or salad, our server said not anymore. I ordered Bento Box C on the menu it said $19.50 includes soup or salad once again the server said it’s no longer included. I paid an extra $2.50 for the salad. We got the bill and the Sashimi Deluxe was $25.00 ($1.50 increase) and my $19.50 dinner was now $24.50 plus the $2.50 for the salad, that’s a $6.50 increase from what your menu says. If you need to change your menu and pricing is fine, but update the menu and don’t charge for the water if your ice machine is broken. The dinner was ok we prefer Wasabi’s downtown, much better than our experience tonight! Oh look back at the reviews, 7 months ago they were charging for water and their menu prices didn’t match! Update your menu and pricing! Deceiving!

Overall a fantastic experience. Ben Gui has the widest range of menu options for sushi in the area. I ordered two of the "Trust Me" roll options (can't remember the names, sorry!) and they didn't disappoint! My wife asked Ben to design a dish based on an experience she had at a Japanese restaurant (in another state) and she was very happy with the result as well. If you're into sake (the beverage, not the fish), they also have the best selection I've found in the area.

One way to gauge the quality of a restaurant is their repeat business. We sat at the bar, so we heard a lot of conversation. Ben knew at least half of the patrons by name. Whether they were coming to dine in, pickup a carryout order, or were passing by on their way out, everyone was effusive in their praise and their enthusiasm for both the food and Ben himself.

Already looking forward to our next sushi date night!

When asked what I wanted to drink I requested unsweetened iced tea which was served in a bottle, no glass, no ice. Asked for a glass and got without the ice. No biggie. My friend and I ordered appetizers, mine was fine, hers was also okay but nothing special. We both ordered the chicken teriyaki. I’ve eaten this dish dozens of times and never have I had it served breaded with a sweet sticky sauce and sesame seeds. The chicken was too sweet and so tough it was difficult to chew.my friend is half Japanese and she found it awful too. I even questioned the server and she said that’s how the kitchen makes it. Upon leaving I asked to speak to the owner and explained our disappointment with the meal. He said we’re a sushi restaurant and have nothing to do with what comes out of the kitchen!

Delicious sushi here!

I moved here from Florida and was very disappointed that I still hadn’t found a good sushi place. Then I tried Ben Gui and I was immediately hooked!

The Angry Lovers Roll is my favorite!

Honestly it wasn't anything special, I had 3 rolls, the prices didn't match the menu and the taste was average. Honestly Sakura 9 is both cheaper and tastier.

Our experience here was really disappointing. We ordered waters for 4 of us and they brought bottled water because they did not have ice and we found out at the end we were charged $6 for that. The bill was higher than we expected even after that extra cost, and when we asked about it, we were told all the prices went up from the ones in the menu by 20% and that it was stated on a piece of paper outside, which we did not see. The service was pretty quick, (but we were the first ones in when they opened), so that was something to their credit-but not very friendly at all. I don’t like to leave bad reviews, but I feel people should be warned. Not only did we feel the pricing was misleading, but the food portions were small and not that great. We will not be returning.

Always great food, fresh and delicious! The owners and staff are always friendly. Highly recommend!!! I got the baby tako salad and the sushi dinner. All of it tasted like it was minutes from swimming in the ocean.

I was excited to eat here after reading reviews. Guys have you ever had quality sushi before?! This is at best grocery store sushi. Small town Virginia sushi is how I would call it. If you are used to good sushi, this is not it. Nice restaurant and cute ambiance, but the food doesn’t deserve the 4.6 stars? Are you kidding me!

My significant other and I are visiting out of state.
We went in to get a table. The male hostess was about to seat us when the sushi chef from behind the counter asked how we were and then proceeded to shout at us "I don't want to handle anymore." When we asked when he would be more free, he said he wouldn't serve us. So we left. Never ever ever have I ever been to a sushi place that was so unpleasant and disrespectful. I hope no one supports a place like this and goes to a sushi place that is kinder to people.

Was excited to try them out, took my wife and two small children to a sushi night. I saw a sign on the front door reading "20 dollar minimum per person" and thought to myself that with kids it's not going to cost 80 dollars. I was woefully incorrect. They insisted on 80 dollars after seeing my children. So I will never be going here again.

Arrived for lunch last weekend, my fiance and I had no clue they only did reservations at the moment because of the pandemic. The owner still seated us soiling as we spent $25 or more, very reasonable and easy to do since the food was amazing and the wait staff was top notch! Definitely give ther sashimi a try and if you wanna be adventurous get one of the chef selections!

Very weird experience. Tried to go there for lunch. Restaurant was literally empty and the chef refused to let us dine in. Only allows people he knows. When my friend asked me should we go eat elsewhere, the chef cut in and angrily yelled "yes go eat somewhere else." Incredibly rude. I've never been treated like that before but based on other reviews it looks like a lot of people have had that experience. Wouldn't be surprised to see this restaurant go out of business. If you don't personally know the chef, don't bother going there anymore.

If you’re looking for sushi/hibachi in Roanoke, don’t go to Ben Gui. My friend and I were going to eat there, but they were extremely rude. When I walked in, I asked for a table for two, the hostess said they were only taking reservations, not walk-ins. Mind you, there was no sign on the door that indicated this nor was that information on their website. I asked if I could make a reservation right then and the chef (presumed owner) said that my friend and I would have to spend $25 minimum per person to eat there. The way he said it suggested that he assumed I couldn’t afford to eat there. What is $25 to eat out, especially at a sushi/hibachi restaurant?? You can spend that easily! Needless to say, I won’t be going back there. There are too many places to get good sushi/hibachi in Roanoke for me to be dealing with rudeness.

Agree with previous negative reviews. I came in and asked for a table for 1 and he said he can’t seat me even though the dining room was practically empty. Said tables are for large parties only????!

Called & asked if we could dine in..the guy responded ‘Of course, looking forward to seeing you’ but when my wife & I arrived he told us he’s only allowing regulars to dine in! I told him I called ahead & showed him on my caller ID. He said he thought I was a regular bc I apparently sounded like them on the phone. I told him if he treats us right, we might become some of his regulars.. he refused & told me ‘I already have enough customers, it doesn’t matter if you come back’! Unbelievable! It doesn’t matter if I come back, huh? I hope your business goes under!

Wanted to dine in. Was told they only allow they’re “regulars” to dine in. Really loved this place pre pandemic but they won’t be getting my business and I’ll be sure to spread the word on their strict dine in policy.

Very rude people. Stop by for lunch on a Saturday and all it said on door was mask required. We walked in and the lady behind the counter says can I help you and my wife says like to eat in. The guy behind the sushi counter yells out we don't know you and we are only serving people we know. Well guess what you won't get to know me because I won't ever stop their again. Covid has been going on for over a year time to get back to normal business and not be so ungrateful for people wanting to eat at your place. We went down the street to Cafe Asia and had Sushi.

Very sweet family runs this restaurant. We drove 25 minutes not knowing that they were taking reservations only for dine-in during COVID-19 (Take note and reserve if you can!!)

They were kind enough to sit us at the bar while we waited for takeout, and served us tea and water to boot.

Sorry--no pictures of the sushi! It was so good it was gone before I could capture it.
