Went there for a late lunch during the week. Service was okay, definitely slow to get started. Food was just edible and okay, but not really sushi grade. The tuna they used looked like the kind that has pink dye added. For the location and price point, I would have expected higher quality tuna. The rice was poorly seasoned, if at all. Sushi pieces were huge and hard to eat. Definitely not a one-bite like sushi should be.

Definitely need to up their service. We waited for the person to even take out appetizers order for 10 mins, I had to go up the front and ask someone to help us. Such bad service. She was than again chatting with another customer (upper class ppl) it was my daughter and me and yet we were ignore for minutes. Food is not great. Am sorry if ppl think they have great sushi oh man they should reevaluate their taste on sushi. Appetizers was ok salad was ok with about 6 pieces of octopus and cucumber so sweet we didn’t finish it. Sushi was more rice than actually the fish we pick, I mean my 5 yr old even mention it and how it was so salty as well. So no I won’t be back to pay $80 of my money. And not I rather not even have anyone waste their money for that so call sushi

Ok, so the reason I come is the spicy mini dumpling appetizer, but I stay for the amazing selection of sushi rolls! I have never had anything bad here food wise. However, my recent experience has made me never want to return. Thus i have changed my rating from 5 stars to 2. I have never been blatantly ignored and made to feel like an inconvenience to serve like I was this past visit. We waited, once seated, for over 10 minutes to even be acknowledged, and from the moment the server opened her mouth, I could tell we would be in for an interesting evening. I won't go into details, but it was hands down the most disappointing service I've had in a while. I get better service at diners than I did here. Yes, we spoke to a manager, apologetic, but nothing was offered to make it right. Emailed corporate and have not gotten a response from them. So its time for the review. There are too many great places in this city with impeccable service to suffer through this ever again. I do hope they take a look at their service standards and ensure everyone is living up to expectations. Pics are from a previous visit when I actually got to eat a full meal. We gave up after our sushi this time, I was very disappointed I didn't get to dessert this time.

They push you to the bar even if 75% of the tables are open because they are “reserved”

Food was delicious--perfect miso and yellowfin ceviche app. Sushi rolls were also great along with the service. Overall, was a nice experience and recommended; however, four stars due to the lighting. The lights over the bar and sushi chefs cheapened the atmosphere and I wouldnt go hang out at either place because of the brightness. Osaka--c'mon, I'm sure this has to be obvious to you. Spend 50$ on dimmable lights!

I went for lunch and my waitress was slow and seemed pissed off throughout my time here. My waitress never asked me or my table if we wanted/needed a refill. I ordered steak and it was VERY CHEWY. I also had to get someone else help me check out and get a box because they were taking too long. I was really disappointed in my visit. Bathrooms were dirty.

Daughter and I stopped in for lunch while Christmas shopping. Wasn't very busy, but it took a little bit for someone to come sit us. We sat at the sushi bar, which is kind of our thing. They had 4-5 chefs going to town, not sure who they were all making it for, but they at least looked busy. The place is very open, but a little smaller than expected. Other than the Sushi bar, they have a small bar that has a few chairs as well. We started with a order of spicy dumplings and edamame, both very good. Then we got a Christmas roll, Eel roll and.. well don't remember the name, but it had a fried oyster in it. The Christmas roll is killer, especially if you like tuna, good large chunks of tasty tuna. All of it was good, the oyster one was a bit spicy for my daughter, but I killed it. Our waitress was on point. Prices were not too outrageous for sushi, they did have a specialty menu where it looked to get a little pricy. Great experience, great food and we would definitely go again.

Was really disappointed. I don't write bad reviews but I felt offended n felt the service was unprofessional and seeting prejudice or racist . To begin, I set up a reservation for my girlfriend birthday . Once arrived, they said my reservation was not ready. I ask what was the point of a reservation then. Young lady responded by saying some people been there too long. This signifies poor mgmt and oversight. So my girlfriend and I went to the bar and rudely approached by bartender . She asks what you want to drink. Before I can answer she walked away and served a white gentleman immediately . For context, my girl and I are a black couple and we were the only ones. 10 min later we were greeted by a nice waiter who escorted us to a table . Once we sat down our waiter was abrupt and did not introduce himself. I understand it's new years eve but a standard must be kept and check and balances at all times. This is called professionalism. While sitting and waitng, my girlfriend and I experievne unwelcome eye context and nonverbal cues from other white counterparts. I waved at them to ease tension but they turned their head. This was my first time out here and I felt disheartened and ashamed that I experice this 35 years of my life and especially being a black male. With absolute depression overwhelming and the feeling of get out, we left hurriedly. I hope this isn't the culture and mission statement of the restaurant and I my intent is to not disdain the reputation of the restaurant but I am only speaking my truth. I am a NAACP member and will notify my community of this experience to see if it has been shared and reverberate. I pray it gets better.

I ordered the Yakisoba, and was unimpressed. Maybe I'm biased because I just came back from a trip in the actual Osaka. I had the Yakisoba from a local restaurant, and it was probably one of the best things I've eaten in my life. This Yakisoba was far from authentic, and tasted completely different than I thought it would. It wasn't bad, or inedible (I thought it was somewhat enjoyable), but it was very greasy, and oily. What do I expect though from Richmond? It's really hard to find authentic food from other countries especially more niche cuisines (at least more niche compared to say Mexican, Italian, or Indian) such as Japanese. Overall though the atmosphere, and general area was nice. Plus I don't want to be too harsh considering I hadn't tried anything else there. I guess just work on the Yakisoba. Very greasy, and not super authentic.

Food is good, but the sushi rolls are $4-5 higher than Hiro Sushi if you want take out often. UPDATE (3/16/24 under Jeff): I dinned in for the first time since I usually order out right after work. I went with my mom (BDay), and sister for a nice dinner. The food was great and noise level was not too bad. However, at the end the server made sure to CIRCLE the total for my bill, as if to mention you should tip well since you spent a good amount of money. I tipped decent, but just because you brought me $25-30 plates doesn't make your service that high or higher. You filled my glass twice....

I’ve been meaning to write this for a few months now. I really like Osaka but the chefs need to learn the different levels of cooked steak. I took my wife out for an anniversary dinner and she order a filet “medium” it came out completely raw inside. We aren’t ones to send food back but we did. Again it came out raw but we just dealt with it at that point. She managed to eat what was edible.
This is not the first time I’ve had this issue here. I myself ordered a filet a while back “well done” and it came out rare. If I have the choice to choose how I want my steak done I’d like the chefs to cook it appropriately.

My husband & I love to try new places. On our way home we decided to stop for sushi. Initially we were going to do take out. After we ordered I decided I wanted to eat in because I thought the place was cute & wanted to try some other items on the menu. The hostess was sweet & offered us a seat at the bar which I declined as I did not want to sit at the bar so she let us sit at a table/booth. As we waited we were greeted by a young man in a pink shirt whom I assume was a manager. He informed us that because we already ordered to go that we could not sit at the table but could sit at the bar. I advised him I did not wish to sit at the bar. As he made this our only option we decided to just keep the order to go. We asked him to explain why we could not sit at the table and he said because it takes away from the experience of having a server come over and go over the menu since we already ordered. I let him know that I was under the impression that once we decided to dine in a server would come over as we were thinking of ordering more. He apologized and took 20% off of our order. This was not a pleasant experience and I will not be back. The place was not packed so there were plenty of available tables. In the end we took the order to go and got home only to find they put our two separate sushi orders in the same container. Never again!

Way to destroy a Mother's Day, Osaka! This was the worst restaurant experience we have ever had. You simply do not rush your patrons like this.
We made a reservation for 8 people 5 days in advance by calling and speaking to the manager, Joe. We were told there was a time limit for 2 hours due to the high amount of reservations for Mother's Day Weekend. We all arrived prior to opening at 5 and were waiting at the door when they finally opened at 5:05. We were seated promptly and within a minute were confronted by the waitress and asked for drink orders and something to start with. When I explained we needed a few minutes to look over the drink menu I noticed she was a little annoyed but she left and came back a few minutes later. We ordered a few drinks, my older daughter was very rudely turned down for a drink when the waitress asked for her ID and she didn't have it and then the waitress asked again about food. I ordered a few appetizers for the table but mentioned we may want another couple depending on the size and I was promptly told that we had a time restriction because another large party was booked at 6:30, she said "oh, didn't the person who took the reservation mention that?" She left again for a few more minutes and came back and again explained that yes, in fact we would only have another hour or so because of another reservation. We already were feeling extremely uncomfortable because we felt like we were being pushed out before we even ordered, so I explained that we were leaving.
We got up, the manager Joe came over and attempted to explain to us that we only had an hour and half and that he explained that on the phone. This was inaccurate and we would never have agreed to that time limit with 8 people trying to enjoy a nice meal out for Mothers Day. Absolutely no restaurant I've ever been to would try to limit such a large party to just an hour and a half and judging by some of the other reviews, it seems impossible that they would have ever been able to even get all that out in time. We left, they lost out on a $500 check, the waitress and staff lost out on a $100 or more tip and they lost a loyal customer for life. Do better Osaka, customer service is about the only thing that separates restaurants these days and you fell on your face with that. Richmond has plenty of great restaurants to frequent and poor customer relations, the inability to manage your seating chart, staff and reservation times will quickly be the demise of even the best restaurants.

We ordered sesame chicken takeout tonight. We’ve been going here since 2015. Not sure if they just switched to a new chef but the chicken was seriously the best we’ve had since moving here. I’m talking any chicken anywhere in the world. Thin crispy breading, tender pieces of chicken cooked just right, sauce was perfect, and the veggies were spot on. Please keep whoever was cooking tonight!! And the Blue Oyster Cult Roll is always a winner.

Very mediocre. A quintessential example of a restaurant without any local competition. The food was served lukewarm (we got steak teriyaki) and there was a hair in the vegetables. Service was lackluster and even rude at times. All of the wait staff hangs out in the back next to tables and criticizes the restaurants food within earshot of customers. Additionally, this was the worst green tea and miso soup that I’ve ever had at an asian restaurant of any kind. Overall, this is a restaurant that is all looks and no quality. If you do come here for any reason, only order traditional sushi rolls.

I went here for my birthday, the place was quiet empty but the hostess didn't let us choose a better table(we had a reservation)we ended in a table by the kitchen and my husband unfortunately kept on being hit by the waiting personnel going in and out.
Our waitress was really nice and the food was fantastic AND so beautiful 😍.
We had the starburst roll, the volcano and fried rice, we had some other rolls too, my absolute favorite was the sweet potato. I had never had that one and it was amazing.
We tried the edamame and the spring rolls from the appetizers and they were great as well.
Food and service was fast. I recommend this place.

The taste of the food is spectacular. The cuts of sashimi are of excellent quality. The salmon in particular is melt-in-your-mouth perfection. My wife and I split the fried calamari appetizer which came over a small bed of crispy noodles with some small chili pieces and a dipping sauce. The calamari was perfectly cooked, excellently crispy and tasted great.
The only negatives are nitpicky and not enough to give less than a 5* review, but I will list them just in case it helps others.
- Octopus Salad - the flavor of the octopus was great, but there wasn't nearly enough of it. The bowl was, no exaggeration, 6 slivers of octopus each approximately the size of a nickel, and approximately 50 pieces of cucumber, served in a tasty seasoned vinaigrette. When I mentioned that there was hardly any octopus and that it was basically a bowl of cucumber, they brought more octopus over at no extra charge. They were friendly about it and it isn't worth mentioning, other than hopefully the ratio of octopus/cucumber improves in the future.
- Table height - I am 6'0 tall (not incredibly tall by any means). The table was short enough that it was slightly uncomfortable, and I found myself having to lean down to rest my forearms on the table. As someone with lower back pain, that was a negative worth noting, and comfort is the only thing that would make me hesitant to come back.
- Table size - The table itself was also surprisingly narrow. For perspective, putting my elbows on the table meant that each elbow was on the edge of the table with no room. This was slightly inconvenient, as we had 2 appetizers to share, 2 drinks each (water and a cocktail), a large plate of sushi/sashimi, dishes for soy sauce/wasabi and plates for the appetizers. In a restaurant where dishes are often shared among tablemates, a larger surface area would be appreciated.

Two things really made it for me.
I’m not sure who I owe the compliment but tasty unique flavors are quite hard to come by! Well done, someone knows a thing or two about flavors.
They do excellent sushi but my recommendation is try some rolls with steak and goat cheese.
I don’t really like goat cheese and these are some of my new favorites.
Second is that the environment is so well balanced. It’s unique but not over done; it’s not too loud but still lively. I enjoy its balance of higher end aesthetic without feeling pretentious. Staff that is attentive but not bothersome. They really hit everything just right, always a pleasure.

Beware, the Happy Hour is only at the bar (maybe 10 seats). They neglect to mention that on the website, so we wasted 40 minutes of driving to be told that in person after we'd already been seated. If you don't get there at 5pm exactly you'll be out of luck.

The service was good but a bit slow since we were so early. The food was amazing though and makes up for any type of wait. We shared 2 appetizers among 3 people and shared 3 rolls. Everything was delicious. We had spring rolls and dumplings for apps and the roll I remember was the blue oyster roll. Outstanding. We were all very full and the prices were very reasonable. The fish for sashimi seemed fresh enough but was cut weirdly and had a lot of tough cartilaginous tissue on it. Spring roll that came in the bento box was indescribably bad- it is my humble opinion that American cheese, canned corn, and imitation crab meat do not belong together.

Wife and I went for a date night 8/7. Wife got a really good martini and I got hot saki+beer, great prices for drinks and they were good. Wife got a sushi assortment. One of them was imitation crab..... Yeah, I want to spend $30 on 9 pieces with one of them being imitation crab. The sushi rice was butchered, overcooked to mush and smash together into a glop. Server was nice enough to take it off the bill. I got the filet, it was cooked okay. And actually tasted well seasoned. The shape was weird, and I'm not entirely convinced it was a filet. The worst part, was the chef cut into it. I'm assuming he wanted to check the cook, but man.... Something I'd be fine with at my local diner, but if Steak is on your front door, you should know your timings. The restaurant was popping and clean. Wish it was better, won't be back.

I’ve been coming here for 9 years imagine- it’s good it’s bad it’s good it’s bad. Always thinking it would change and be like the first time I visited and thought it was great! Tonight was the last straw- ordered the seafood soup- came out cold, the calamari was hard and chewy- I told the waitress, she looked annoyed that I told her. Not even a “I’m sorry”! Then ordered the volcano roll, again it was terrible too. Mushy, tasted like it was 2 days old. The hand roll I ordered also the seaweed was mushy and dry - so bad- had the waitress call the manager, she came over apologized and took it off the bill. Which was the right thing to do. Japanese people need to make sushi! Will not go back! Can’t trust it again. Go to Red Salt in short pump much better.

Let me start with saying that Osaka is our go to place to celebrate any occasion. All in our family enjoy Sushi and the atmosphere of Osaka. Recently we went there to celebrate my husband's birthday. Our usual order of Tuna was no where close to freshness. It did was smelly along with lot more rice than usual. Haru chicken was extremely salty that we had to return the order which the host was graceful to remove from our bill. Lastly we had the bento box with chicken teriyaki hich was again very salty. Overall this trip did not work in favor for us. Hopefully we forget about this experience and go back to Osaka.

Service was nice, kinda hard to get someone but it was busy so I'll blame it on the rush. Food was so so. Not too mind blowing. Not horrible. Salad and miso that came with meal was okay, miso was good, salad dressing tasted off. Bento with steak was good. Tempura was okay. Sushi was okay but around grocery store okay. Worst thing I had which we couldn't eat was dumpling soup. Didn't taste good at all. Dumpling appetizer was good but some parts were hard like the noodle hadn't been cooked all the way through, besides that it tasted great. Over all it was okay and a nice looking place but probably won't go back. Below in picture is the best (bento steak) and worst (dumpling soup) I had.

Omg! Came in for dinner place had about 12 customers. We sat down, and after waiting 15 min for anyone to come up to us for a drink order or anything, we decided to leave. Menu looked nice. Air tasted ok thats about it. Service sucked

Absolutely lovely. We got engaged this morning and decided to go to Osaka for dinner. This was our first time at Osaka, and I got the fried calamari and Black Russian roll. My fiancé for the egg fried rice (which they made sure was gluten-free and corn-free for her). The meal was stunning and the sushi was by far the BEST sushi roll I’ve ever had. I also tasted the sea urchin and tuna sushi. The tuna was fantastic, but I think sea urchin is an acquired taste and not for me.
Service was fantastic. We were fortunate to go in right after they opened for dinner service, so we didn’t need a reservation, although I recommend you make one, because it fills up fast.
Thank you to everyone at Osaka for their quick assistance to make our engagement dinner a success.

If you never had sushi before and you’re looking for a place that’s pretty authentic then this is where you want to go to… just make you reserve a table first.

I've been going here for 3-4 years, I've only eaten in once but get take out sushi probably once every 1-2 weeks. They have the BEST sushi in Richmond, let alone the other food is amazing as well. I've never been a more consistent customer to a restaurant in my life.

I ordered the crab and shrimp fried rice online. It was delicious. The food was ready earlier than was stated, and it was a large portion enough for leftovers.

Came for a date night as this was on our "sushi must try list" and was not disappointed. The lady in lavender drink is my new all time favorite and the sushi was fresh and delicious. Got the civeche for app and it was absolutely incredible. It is a very busy place so it was a bit crowded very noisy but still had a good time.

Not good. The sashimi and like dishes were swimming in vinaigrette, which was quite unbalanced. Wasn’t a fan of the simple sushi roll we got either! The ambiance was nice, but food 5/10.

After waiting 25 minutes they called and said they couldn’t accommodate us. Getting in and out of the restaurant is a hassle.

I really enjoyed this place.
Walked in for a family's birthday lunch. I think this place is a good intro for people who are not familiar with Japanese food + sushi. Waitress was so kind and patient, the atmosphere was great. Food was very good, just modernized - and that's totally okay.

The owners also own Lucky AF in Scott's addition which is my fiancee and I's favorite sushi date night spot. Osaka sports a similar menu to Lucky but with many variations so if you love one but feel like you've tried everything go to the other for sure. They were slam packed but still able to take our reservation a little early and provide us with good service, definitely will be coming back

The food was good, the waitress was very nice and did a great job. Four of us arrived around 5:15 and were the only people seated at a table..only 2 others seated at the bar. Hostess seated us without a word. During the hour the restaurant became busy and at 6:45, a woman, I assume in management came and ask us to leave because someone had a 7:00 reservation. We were never warned of this and after spending over $70 and enjoying our time catching up, we felt this was very rude. If you are going to rush a customer out of your restaurant, you should give them an option as they enter the door whether they want to stay. We enjoyed the dinner but this definitely put a bad taste in our mouth for another visit.

My server scoffed at my friends and I for asking for more time before ordering. Food was really good. But the server was not personable to me and scoffing at a customer isn’t a good way to make business. Very disappointed and displeased.

Osaka has been our go to higher end sushi place for a few years now. We've never been disappointed when talking out or eating in.

I enjoyed the food but the reservation instructions were not clear: Reserved a booth based on the directions given at a previous experience and once we got there, no booths were available so we had to wait which shortened the time we had to enjoy the atmosphere as we had another appointed engagement.

Had a great experience at Osaka despite their menu for restaurant week not being ready on time. Ordered the calamari and shrimp appetizers which were both amazing. Also depicted are the geisha and eel rolls which were both delicious as well. Will definitely be venturing back here again in the future.

My husband and I like to come here for date nights because we enjoy good sushi. We order the Sashimi love boat and it is always good quality. They usually have wine specials. I enjoy the Riesling with the Sashimi. This time I got the filet. It came with potato wontons, asparagus, and a fresh beet/carrot/cilantro/arugula garnish salad (which does wonders for your hormones) and a pleasant surprise of fried rice which was the best fried rice I've had at a restaurant. Put some of the ginger dressing and a bit of soy sauce on the garnish salad and it is perfect. My steak was a bit under done but I sent it back and they fixed it. The asparagus were hot, a bit crunchy and properly seasoned. I ate everything didn't need a to go plate. Great Service. We love this place, check it out. If you eat here once you'll here twice and so forth.

Amazing ceviche and sashimi, very fresh (and I am picky). Also impeccable service and fantastic wine options. The wine menu is extensive and the staff is very knowledgeable about taste and pairings.
