I came to this restaurant and ordered the crazy dragon rolls which were really good by the way and a steak hibachi well done. I asked the waiter if they had yum yum sauce and his response to me was "yes we do but I'm going to have to charge you extra because we're running low on it" and My steak was not cooked well done it was very much red in the inside so I sent it back. They brought me the dish back with my steak still red in the inside so I sent it back again. When the waiter returned with my plate he said that the chef said "this is the best they could do". I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. The customer service was horrible.

Not sure what the other reviewers had issue with but I had a decent meal here. The food was decent and I had a couple fun rolls, service was great, obviously a prime location. Worth a revisit for sure, nothing turned me off from coming back.

This is me and my boyfriend’s FAVORITE sushi spot in RVA the staff are so sweet and the sushi and sashimi is sooo good!! And don’t get me started on that GINGER SALAD it’s so refreshing and delicious!!! If you’re going here on a date I definitely recommend the Love Boat

The rolls they have available are interesting, but the sushi itself lacks any sort of punch and the flavors are underwhelming. By no means bad sushi, but also does not elevate to the level of some other sushi restaurants in the city. If someone put this in front of me, I would absolutely eat it, but I don't see myself going out of my way to have another meal here.

My wife and I first ate at Momotaro about a week ago and we immediately fell in love with it! I've had a lot of Japanese food over the years and I still love all the food I've ordered so far. I don't frequently come across good miso soup, but their miso was so good that I was excited to try everything else. And it didn't disappoint! Their shumai is like nothing else I've ever tried--light, sweet, and savory all at the same time. Their Angie Roll and Double Rainbow Rolls were all the way across--I mean *delicious*. We tried their hibachi and curry bowl, which were both so flavorful. I loved their green tea and their dessert as well. The atmosphere was great, the service was quick, and the quality and amount of food you get for the price is simply amazing. We'll be going back a lot!

My husband and I discovered Momotaro while walking around Carytown, and we decided to try it a couple of weeks ago. He's from NYC, so he's had a lot of good Japanese food over the years.

We tried the miso soup first, and we immediately knew we'd found a gem of a place. Next we tried their Angie roll and Double Rainbow roll - perfection. The shumai was literally the best we've ever had. We also got a pot of hot green tea, which normally I'm not a fan of. Theirs was SO good we finished the whole pot together. We ordered shrimp hibachi next, and it was just as delicious as everything else. We had strawberry mochi with ice cream for dessert (honestly the best mochi I've had).

Service was great - prompt and polite. The chef came out to check on everything a few times and he was super polite and grateful.

We both agree this is one of our new favorite restaurants we've ever eaten at. We went back again tonight and ordered the miso soup, Angie roll, shumai, green tea, and mochi ice cream again, and tried their shrimp curry bowl. Of course we loved that too! I can't recommend Momotaro enough!!

Came in at 630 on a Monday and grabbed appetizers (miso soup and ginger salad) which were great and then ordered a crazy dragon roll along with a volcano roll. Both came out in orderly time and tasted amazing. The service was quick and polite, never pushing to order or leave. Would come back anytime!

Ordered via GrubHub:

Got two simple spicy rolls ($6.50 each) and a Kani salad ($7.50).

Did not get what I paid for, and the taste isn't lacking, it is just missing. Rice tasted funky, and no flavors in the tuna/salmon. The spicy wasn't even there. The salad was mainly a leaf of lettuce with very little fake crab meat as it was. It was flavorful, but wasn't much so definitely a loss on almost $30. I did save $3 since it was my first, and last, time ordering from this restaurant.

Shellfish allergy warning: I think this is the only bad review I’ve ever written but I wanted to do it for other people with food allergies. I really wanted to love this place but honestly I was given a real scare and will not be coming back. I was searching for an appetizer with my friend and I asked the server if the Shumai (just shumai on menu) had shrimp. I know they traditionally contain shrimp but I’ve always seen “Shrimp Shumai” on menus and really wanted dumplings. The server replied that they did not have shrimp. I said that was fantastic, expressly mentioning that I have a shrimp allergy. Appetizer comes out I take a bite and immediately know it’s shrimp, slight taste of fish with pink and white meat. I pointed it out to the server who had to check with back-of-house themselves if the dumplings did or did not have shrimp. They comes back to apologize and explains that there were 2 varieties of dumpling—one with shrimp and one with pork. They said the shrimp shumai would not appear on the check, I asked if we could just have the pork dumplings as long as it’s a different recipe. I ended up calling my partner who was at our home a 5 minute walk away. If my partner wasn’t home and if I wasn’t familiar with the museum district and where the nearest drug store/corner store was-then I would have been in huge danger. I was already in danger but fortunately my allergy is not as deadly as it could be—still serious but my partner was able to deliver some antihistamines in time. Sushi was absolutely fine but perhaps a little low in quality for the price. Our server was completely absent the entire time but I’m not sure what their team was telling them to do so I won’t hold it against them. My friend and I joked that the most disappointing part of it all was that the dumplings weren’t even that good and they did not comp the pork dumplings. Please inform all staff of common allergens from day one. Not everyone will have the same luck as I did

Wow. I don't know what to say. My fiancee and I were strolling down Carytown. We passed by the restaurant at first and by the time we were ready to eat and walked back to the restaurant they were ten minutes past closing time for their lunch service. They saw us looking at their menu again and invited us inside. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the music was perfect for a date day. I started by ordering plum wine and salmon Nigiri and flying fish roe sashimi. I personally start with nigiri and sashimi at any new sushi place I visit to get a feel for how thier sushi will be. The salmon was perfectly prepared and the roe sashimi was a great transition to some special rolls. After that we had the carytown roll, volcano, and finally ordered the tornado roll to-go. I am terribly grateful that they opened their doors for us. It may have been the best sushi I've had Richmond, so far. The service was great, too. It wasn't till after we had our meal that I looked at the reviews; I can only go off my experience but I would 10/10 recommend people go here and will definitely be going back myself!

Everything tasted great, and the ambiance was nice too. Had a great meal and really enjoyed ourselves, 5 stars for sure!

Awful sushi. Don’t waste your time or money. I wish I had read the reviews. Delivery was fast but now I know why. Rice was disgusting, completely mushed, more like a paste than actual rice. I’ve never seen sushi repel soy sauce like it did from this place. Rolls are sloppily covered in sauce. Fish is gross, rice is gross, the soy sauce they give you is unusually bad. I got a side salad and it was pathetic, it’s a simple salad but it should be 3x the size.

This was the worst food I’ve ever paid for. I got medium rare steak hibatchi. This is what came. It was $21. Over cooked to the point of resembling jerky and absolutely horrible. $4 salad. Just lettuce. $3 soup, looked and tasted like dishwater. I am flabbergasted that this place is even allowed to serve food. Spoke to someone on the phone and they blamed the Uber driver for “eating my food”. Disgusting place that hires an equally disgusting staff. These people are shameless and have no quality— food or service.

Sushi Experience №66

I was there for lunch today. The staff was friendly, the food came out fast and I had a relatively good experience. I had what I thinks may have been a new item on their menu called miso ramen (the waiter also kept asking what I thought of the dish so I am sure that it is a new item on the menu). It's not ramen. It was stir fry noodles in miso soup with some broccoli and a boiled egg ( not soft boiled and seasoned but hard boiled). It was a cold day and it was a nice soup on its own but it most certainly was not ramen nor was it worth the $14 I spent on it (I would have paid maybe $6-8 for it). When I see ramen (which normally is sold between $10-12) with a $14 price tag I am expecting springy ramen noodles, thick creamy soft boiled egg, and a rich broth to go with it (or at least something that can be called ramen). Ramen takes a lot of time and effort, even if it isn't made with meat, so it was disappointing that I spent $14 on stir fry noodles with miso soup broth. I got tofu on my miso noodle soup (which is what it should be called) and I was delighted by it. It's battered and deep fried tofu cubes. They tasted sort of like chicken nuggets to me. If I come back I would order the fried tofu on its own as an appetizer and ask for some sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. Normally I tip but the $14 miso soup made me not want to so I didn't. Since this is namely a sushi place I may come back and try the sushi and give this place a better rating.

Ambience is really great and peaceful but the food was alright. Nothing spectacular but on a scale of 1-10 I'd rate it 6.7. The plates that the food was served on were...icky. They were dusty and the small saucer on my table meant for the soy sauce was severely so. Miso was watery and ok, I had to pour some soy sauce in mine to make it less tasteless. I'm asian and have tried grocery sushi to $70+ sushi tastings and was disappointed that this was slightly comparable in taste to grocery sushi. I've grown up going to restaurants where the hygiene wasn't top-notch but the food was amazing- however this was not the case in my experience. I really wanted to enjoy this place more but the food falls short of expectations. The owner was very nice though

Sushi Experience №72

A waste of money. The sushi is worse than the sort you’d find at a gas station or grocery store.
Some pieces have almost nothing but rice in them. The rice was HORRIBLE. Like gummy-white-paste HORRIBLE.
This is the worst sushi I’ve had. Not just in Richmond. Anywhere. Ever.

Visited 3 years ago

Sushi Experience №73

Each roll was either incredibly bland or outright disgusting. I've never eaten sushi with ground fish instead of whole pieces or sushi that had what looked and tasted like Velveeta cheese drizzled over it before and I'll certainly never do so again. Additionally, the miso soup tasted like water that was shown a picture of real miso soup.
Honestly, I'm not sure whether I'm more disgusted with the quality of the food or with how much they charged for four rolls of pure disappointment and a cup of beige water.

Don’t eat here, it’s a zero star. Very bad sushi. No flavor (vinegar or anything) in the rice. very mush rice. Very little fish in the rolls or sushi. I would not recommend. Server was nice.

Visited 3 years ago

Sushi Experience №75

If I could give this a zero star I would. I received a LOAF of rice as you can tell from the picture. The tempura crisps were so stale. It is a 1:10 ratio of fish to rice. Really disappointed in this restaurant and have zero plans to go back and would not recommend.

Visited 3 years ago

Sushi Experience №76

Really NOT good sushi which is extremely disappointing considering it was rated 4 stars on google. I am unhappy to say it was by far the worst sushi I have ever had. The rice was complete mush and no seasoning and the fish had no flavor and looked as thought it had been blended up in a food processor. I usually don’t leave bad reviews but I was very disappointed. The seaweed salad was yummy and the green tea was good but those were the only 2 good things.

Sushi Experience №77

I love sushi, have tried a million different restaurants and used to work at a great sushi bar for four years. This is the worst sushi I’ve ever had. I mean, i would rather get sushi from the grocery store. The rice was super overcooked and mushy. The roll was also practically all rice, with little to no actual fish and the roll was drowned in sauces that further contributed to the mushiness of it all. I also ordered shumai which were super over cooked (wonton wrapping was practically falling off) and there wasn’t any sauce for it?? Not to be dramatic but I’ve never gotten dumplings without sauce ? lol. I can count on one hand how many reviews I’ve written but I’m pretty annoyed with the quality for what I spent. That’s another thing… their prices are the same as way better sushi joints. if I paid less I would be more understanding but I paid just as much as I have at other places. Sticking to Miyabi and sumo San!

Sushi Experience №78

Took myself on a little date here tonight, I sat by the window and watched a few K-pop videos on the television. I ordered the miso soup, shumai and sprite to start, all of which came out in a timely manner. I asked my server, Justin, to help me choose between two rolls and with his advice landed on the Wutang roll. It was tasty, a good sized roll, and had a good filling to rice ratio.

Overall the food was tasty and filling, the atmosphere was chill and the service was on point. I’ll have to start making trips here a regular thing.

Daughter and I love to try new sushi restaurants. We wanted to go down to Cary Street on a Saturday night to be able to walk around and check out some of the other stores. We had never been to Momotaro, so we thought we would give it a try. We were a tad worried since it was like 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people in the place and only ones the whole time we were there. We did see quite a bit of to go orders to go though. We ordered a Eel Dragon roll, eel roll, spicy tuna and tempura shrimp roll. The gentleman that waited on us was super nice and quick to help us out. Our order didn't take overly long to get made why we're waiting though they have a pretty cool saltwater fish tank setup for my daughter and I watch the fish for a while which was kind of fun. The decor is pretty cool, not a very large place maybe 10 tables or so and they had 1 table set up out on the sidewalk. Both my daughter and I thought the sushi was really good. I thought the quality was pretty top-notch and the size of the rules we're pretty filling. Don't know if it was a fluke and just a time and when we went with no one there but this place should definitely be much busier. When we venture back down to Cary Street again for sushi, I'm sure we would be stopping in.

This was a bizarrely bad restaurant visit. Our waitress presented us with two torn paper menus that had been written on to order from. The bar and other table in the room we were in were empty, but dirty. When the waitress returned, she poured water all over the table when pouring water for us. She left the mess without acknowledging it for us to clean up. We ordered a pot of tea and were given a cold pot of tea. When she brought the replacement, it was less than half full. She brought the miso soup I ordered then asked several times in the span of 15 minutes if I ever got my soup. Meanwhile, an agitated family of 2 from the adjacent dining area left saying that they had been waiting for an hr and ten minutes for their food. There were 6 seated booths, including our party in the entire space, so the restaurant wasn’t packed. The service was so unnervingly bad that we paid for our tea and soup and left.

The second time me and a friend decided to stop in and try the pork ramen advertised on their a frame out front-not only did the waitress not even know if they had ramen available but when she asked they didnt even have pork. As if to punish us for ignoring all the red flags up until the food arrived the ramen itself tasted like they threw maruchan noodles in their miso soup, the veggies were under cooked and the chicken tasted boiled. I was genuinely insulted they were charging almost $11 for it. The staff was fantastic and the only thing saving them from a one star.

This might be the worst restaurant experience I have had in Richmond. May I suggest Sticky Rice, Foo Dog, anywhere instead.

It was expensive, portions were small, my friend had uncooked chicken in her ramen (because they were out of pork for the “Pork Ramen”??), and our waitress could have acted like she cared less that we were there. We were the only people in the entire restaurant on a busy Friday night, now I see why.

The rice that was used was one step below mushy and was bland. The flavor of the rolls was lacking; the only way I could get any flavor out of my meal was by pairing the rolls with soy sauce and ginger. Furthermore, the roll was not rolled well and consistently threatened to fall apart. I got the dinner special for one- the miso soup was lukewarm at best and the seaweed salad was excessively oily.
The laminated menus were edited with marker and falling apart. The wait staff was very friendly but was not able to clarify something on the menu for us. The atmosphere and music was really pleasant and the wait staff very attentive.
Overall, I would not come back to this restaurant and spend more money there.

Small menu but great food, nice vibe. They have good prices on their sushi and some nice specials to choose from. Their miso soup is a little plain, without any tofu, but nothing here I’ve tried has been anything less than good. A great sushi place to go to on a budget or even when you have some good spending money.

Great sushi and a really amazing aquarium to stare at while you eat. It’s usually pretty quiet and zen compared with the other sushi place on Cary and the happy hour half off special on Wednesdays is pretty good. They’re also super friendly even when you have fussy baby.

Edit//
Bumping up to a 4 star, because again, I really do love the food here! the chef is good and friendly. They were out of the Hana Awaka saki again, but hopefully next time they will have it. Overall, if you live nearby, it's a good spot. It's always quiet and the fish are great to look at. We live a short walk away, so this is still likely to remain our sushi spot.

I love this place, and it's one of my favorites to be honest. I go here pretty often, but today I am leaving a three star review due to an odd experience I had there tonight. We had a fairly new seeming waiter, as I'd never seem him there before. I wanted to cut him some slack because he seemed like he was just new, but the man did not speak to us barely at all. Later I did catch on that he didn't seem too fluent in english so I just tried to dismiss not being greeted or spoken to in general. Ordered hana awaka saki like we always do but then he returned to tell us they were out. Ok, that's fine (they have never been out before) but I told him a coke would be fine instead. He leaves and then does not return for like 10 minutes. We decided what we wanted like, 2 minutes into sitting there. Did not return with my drink I ordered, but we just went ahead and ordered. Never got the coke btw but we ordered hot saki instead.

it takes another 10 minutes before our saki is brought out! and mind you, it's pouring rain outside and there is no one else in this place so not sure why these things are taking so long.

he returns 8 minutes after our order and tells my friend (this is her first time at this place with us after we suggested it) telling my friend she cannot order the snapper by saying- "The snapper is, not so good. Can i get you something else" was very confused by that, but she said "Oh, no thank you, i like Snapper" he replies "ahh i asked him (the chef) and not so good, you sure?" at this point my friend just decides to give into what ever coercing this is and decides on the tuna instead.

maybe they were out? or the fish was bad? I dunno. I'd have been ok if they had just said they were out of it but this seemed like an underhanded way to talk my friend out of the snapper. Mind you, the tuna was $2 more so....

Once we got our food we enjoyed it as we usually do, which is why it saddens me to make this review. People remember the bad experiences they have, and I recall once before my review for this place was a shining 5 stars. I hope next time I go to my fav place I can edit this review by saying this was a one time experience, but only time will tell.

Small portions, high prices, low quality fish and poor service. Our waitress gave us 4 dirty glasses with tons of water spots, and insisted since they were just washed she won't bring us new ones. I got the peppered tuna roll for $8.95 and it was tiny pieces, with rice in the center of the roll (hardly any fish, poor technique). Salmon roll didn't have any white strips of fat in the salmon.

First and last time going.

Our server was an older lady with white hair, she was incredibly kind and very patient. Great customer service, good cheap options for all of their classic rolls, quick preparation, awesome chill house playlist. Only took 1 star off because the sushi rice was watery but the fish quality was awesome.

My friend and I ate there on a Friday evening. The water was room temperature without even ice and the food was okay. When we went to pay, after being stared at by the waitress who came to check on us once, she came over and opened the black book we had put our cash in and counted the money in front of us after saying “everything there?” So rude and insulting. Won’t be going back

Excellent sushi. My wife and I shared an order of shumai and it was incredible. The only issue we had was unpeeled shrimp in one roll, easily remedied. Between us, we tried 6 different rolls, shumai and edamame. Absolutely a top notch place and one we intend to frequent.
