A relatively small and cosy restaurant that serves primarily seafood dishes, with a few meat & vegetarian options. About half of the choices are sushi dishes. Everything is served professionally and is delicious. They have a full bar and the service is excellent. Street parking but, at the moment, a business across the street has gone out of business and has many parking spots. Reservations are highly recommended. Handicap friendly.

I've eaten here several times over the last year+ and am never disappointed. My husband usually gets rolls and my go to is the Don Herbivore. The food is consistently good, and the service is great. I enjoy the miso soup starter. I noticed there are several staff members who have been there a while and I think that says a lot about the team. Steve, who has been our server several times, and the sweet redhead host are both top notch! An unassuming spot with a surprisingly amazing menu.

As I write this food review, I want to first acknowledge that 9/10 when someone ask for me to do a review for their business, I usually use ChatGPT. If you’re an elder and unaware of what “ChatGPT” is, it is an artificial intelligence program that can generate anything you ask (pretty cool if you ask me). Anyway, let’s get to the point. No one asked me to do this food review but as I read through these food reviews, it has encouraged me to leave one of my own as I write this at 5AM. This place, the fighting fish, has the best sushi in the freaking world. You know, before my pallet developed , I didn’t really want to try sushi. Raw fish? Gross. I like everything fried. But this, this place right here took me back to childhood birth. The most beautiful thing a person can experience. The staff is freaking awesome and on top of that, when I ask for extra candy, they give it without hesitation. Man. You know the first time I went here and tried it, I went 5 more times that week, and two of those times being twice that same day. I was a little ashamed and embarrassed initially , so i just sent my friend to go pick it up for me so I could eat it in private. I hope this monologue helps you make the right decision when choosing where to go for sushi. Lastly, if anyone reads this from the fighting fish, I would be more than honored to meet the chef, as I have a few words for them. Thank you

Went on a Saturday night with a reservation, walked in and was told by the hostess we'd need to wait for her to take the takeout orders of some guests who walked in as they were standing around the table we were assigned. The table we were to be sat at was adjacent to the front door and was very close to where people who had ordered takeout were standing and waiting for their order. Throughout the entirety of our dinner there were people standing over us, conversing, and it felt very overwhelming and ruined our experience at the restaurant. In my opinion, that table should not exist and/or the takeout system for this restaurant needs to be heavily modified.

While this did overshadow the rest of our experience, I will say the food was fantastic and some of the best sushi I've had in RVA. I would love to come back and recommend this to friends/family but I'm honestly a little worried about being seated at the same table.

This place is amazing. I had to wait maybe 25 minutes for a table, but I'm glad I decided to wait. Everything was phenomenal from service, quality, and quantity of food. If you like sushi, this is definitely the place to go. Tuna love and Monster roll were my favorites, but overall everything was amazing.

We ordered the lunch combo twice (Nigiri Lovers) which is probably the best Suschi deal in all of Richmond! It comes with either soup or seaweed salad (+$3). The fish was fresh and of high quality, we can highly recommend the salmon/avocado rolls and the shrimp rolls. The service was also very friendly!

Some of the food was 20/10 and some of it was just… not. Everyone else raved about their food. However, three of us got the Monster Roll and it ended up being just way too much going on. It was hard to eat and tasted off. My friend and I had stomach aches later. I would absolutely go back and get something else though.

I will note that the service was quite slow. I’m okay with food taking awhile but she barely visited us to check drinks and whatnot.

Atmosphere was lovely, quiet, and romantic.

Good sized rolls and taste. A little more rice than I'd prefer in both burrito and monster roll but I still enjoyed it. Service was good and brought a side of fire sauce for me since i prefer spicier than their normal.

I can normally eat a lot of sushi but was pretty full after a burrito and monster roll (effectively same size as burrito)

Sides however werent great. Sweet potato chips tasted really burnt and I couldn't eat more than 2 of them left plate full. It looked like the fries were in a similar shape. Alternatives like salad would be nice or a change in recipe/cooking method would be nice as they were inedible to me.

Me and my boyfriend go here a lot because we really like their lunch specials and portion sizes. However, my boyfriend has a peanut and chickpea allergy which we have spoken to them about. They said they do not even have peanut and chickpeas in the kitchen so we thought this was a safe place to eat. We had dinner and within an hour he had a severe allergic reaction (we only got basic traditional rolls). He had to go to the ER because it was so extreme. His allergy is not that sensitive which means there was likely a significant amount of contamination. He did not eat or drink anything else after eating here and going to the ER. Do not eat here if you have allergies!! The food is not safe, even when staff is informed about the allergens. Please take better precautions to protect people with allergies. It was a terrifying experience that we wouldn’t wish on anyone.

I'll start with the negative:
- our server switch mid meal and they kind of forgot about us for a half hour.
- no baby changing station in restroom, had to use the floor(don't worry I have a portable mat for my son)
- atmosphere is uncertain, unsure about what the theme is

The positive:
-The food taste and quality was exceptional. I came for my birthday and was blown away at how delicious and fresh the food was.
-The service was other wise attentive and friendly.
- sushi burrito is a must
-Their drinks are heavenly!

Give this place a shot, you won't regret it!

Quality of fish was fresh, I think lol. I was surprised that the yellowtail roll was dark and a diced consistency rather than a light colored and a solid piece, but that may just be my preference/experience. I was expecting a brighter/cleaner flavor but it tasted pretty fatty. I wish they had a shrimp tempura roll that isn’t spicy (besides the cowboy one). The flavor of the Tiger Tempura roll is great, I just prefer for the wasabi to be the spice in my sushi.

I’ll be back to try again, no doubt. Great spot, the atmosphere was nice.

I hate to give a bad review, but the horrible service deserves it. Three of us walked in last night at 7pm, it was busy, but not overwhelming. We stood and waited for about ten minutes before anyone acknowledged we were there. The server came over and abruptly said "15 minutes", proceeded to walk over and place two dirty glasses on an empty table that was dirty, and never acknowledged us again, nor cleaned the table. Finally a manager came and asked if we'd been helped, and took another ten minutes to clean and set up the table. No worries, it happens, but it just got worse. The same server who was annoyed by us walking in took our table. It took 25 minutes to get our drinks, and even then we had to ask her to check on them. We were never ever refilled on water and finally had to flag down another server and ask because ours seemed to forget she had our table. When I say she never checked on us, I mean not for the entire meal, never asked how our food was, if we needed anymore drinks, or if we needed water or the check. Another personal pet peeve, she was basically a mute when we thanked her for anything, the TWO times she came to the table to bring drinks once and food once. The food was sub par, but the service really ruined it. I will NEVER go back. We spent over 100 on dinner and drinks to be treated as an inconvenience. I understand being busy, but we were legitimately neglected.

Have heard people say that fighting fish is expensive. And after going there to try it for myself, I have to disagree! See, the thing is, they give you such an over abundance of food. So for what you are being given, that price point is spot on. Would recommend splitting dishes!! Everything was so freaking delicious omg. We got the combo lunch specials and the fish tower. And I just have to say, never in my life have I had such a big, thoughtfully put together, and yummy ginger salad before. The fish was super fresh and tasty! And the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Food was good. Manager was incredibly rude. My husband’s chair was disgusting. He stood at the table for almost 5 minutes, but no one was around to help or notice he couldn’t sit down. He finally took matters into his own hands and replaced the chair himself. He never received an apology or offer from staff to fix the situation. Just an incredibly rude manager who embarrassed him for taking action. We spent $375 on dinner, and the same manager was eager to kick us out right at our two hour mark. We appreciate and understand the need to turn tables over for waiting guests. But, her tone was incredibly rude and off-putting. A posted notice or kind mention ahead of time would have been a more professional way to handle this. We had VERY slow service followed by a 10 minute notice that it was time for us to wrap up. We would have left way before the two hour mark if the food was served in a timely manner. Even if the food is decent, kindness and good service goes a long way. We will not return. FYI- They add 20% gratuity without letting patrons know.

Read reviews to move me to choose; my daughter and I went on a Saturday night around 8:20pm and it was pretty busy — save time to park! Waited about 30 minutes for a table — no sufficient waiting area. The menu is inviting but a LOT of spicy options. Server offered suggestions and was friendly. Food was, sadly, not as good as expected. Wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t memorable. Ordered Alligator Roll; server recommended wasabi aioli on the side to cut the spiciness but should’ve suggested spicy mayo on the side too because mine was drowning in it, which may have impacted my enjoyment. Salmon wontons were ok — I tasted one of my daughter’s but didn’t crave another. Also had yellowtail nigiri and while the fish was good the rice was a little hard and chewy. Soy sauce bottle on table was comically empty — lucky I only needed a few drops! Decor and atmosphere are very nice! Service was great — server was courteous, but hostess was a bit absent and told us there were “several” parties waiting ahead of us when it turned out to be one…

We went in on a Sunday afternoon and both got the lunch specials. We got a trio of classic rolls and then a special which included 2 of the specialty rolls. The service was top notch. Our waitress was very good and the bartender came out twice and refilled our waters while she was serving others. The presentation of the food was excellent. The miso soup was full of flavor and very hot. The rolls were decorated on slate stone in varying designs and looked superb. Lastly was the quality of the food and it did not disappoint. The classic rolls were basic rolls but they were made very well and above other sushi places classic rolls. The specialty rolls, however, were excellent. We got a cowboy and a salmon/crab cake roll. Highly recommend both of them. Both the wasabi and the ginger were fresh and full of flavor. This is a place we will definitely be back to.

Borderline 2 but at least no one got sick. Mid-tier sushi at best.

Genuinely shocked the ratings are as high as they are.

Spicy tuna is ground instead of cubed which was a turn off. Flavors just did not work together on anything we had.

If you eat most of your sushi from the grocery store and sushi king is 'fancy' for you, then this is probably top tier sushi. Otherwise, there are better options in the area.

Sushi Experience №131

Very solid choice for sushi. The quality of the fish was good. Service was 'richmond' and fits the vibe of the place. Not pretentious, which made for an enjoyable relaxed dining experience even though the presentation of the dishes was quite impressive, but the presentation surpassed the actual flavor of the dishes. Again, nothing bad, just not amazing. The sushi rice was noticeably subpar, but the ginger /Wasabi paste they used was decent quality. Definitely a good date spot to impress your lady friend, but maybe not the best choice if looking for a knockout gourmet sushi experience.

The cocktail was delicious and the ambience was nice. Sushi nachos were quite delicious! I just don't understand why any chef would serve sushi with a pile of greasy french fries with a $3 upcharge to add nori on top...rediculous. There was nothing special about the fries even though our server recommended them. I really missed having ginger on the plate. Next time I would definitely skip the sushi burrito which was difficult to eat for some "normal" cut sushi rolls. Sushi is a delicate dish and this presentation made it feel heavy and burdensome. It was a bit pricey too, but it fits Scott's Addition's clientele. That being said, I would return. Best sushi in Richmond, thus far.

I love Fighting Fish, but I had an awful incident with wait staff last night.

I ordered a mocktail, and was halfway through drinking it when I realized that I didn't feel right. Apparently, the names of the mocktails are the same as the names of the cocktails, so it is very easy to accidentally serve someone alcohol.

There are so many people who can't have alcohol for a variety of reasons: sobriety, medical conditions, mental health conditions, medication interactions, or in a situation where it's not ideal to drink, like on a date with a stranger. Please make the common sense change so that mocktails have different names, to avoid accidentally hurting a customer.

The food here is amazing, but I was so disappointed that this very preventable error happened.

We came after a recommendation and we were happy with our order but not blown away. The sushi was a bit overpriced in our opinion for what it was and I am undecided on if I would come back. We got the monster roll and the sunset roll. Between those two sunset roll was better and we probably would have picked something else for the monster. Overall fish was fresh but the flavors didn’t wow us.

My boyfriend and I just tried this place for the first time and unfortunately, it wasn’t great. We were starving though so we ate pretty much everything haha.

For starters, we ordered the raw oysters on a half shell. Our waiter brought them out with our regular order of rolls which was slightly annoying since we wanted to eat our appetizer while waiting on our food. The oysters themselves tasted fine but were TINY. Like thumbnail sized but full price.

I got the chirashi and the fish was cut WAY too thick. Not only is that bad business (could have gotten 3 servings out of one piece), it makes the fish chewier when it’s supposed to melt in your mouth. The fish was also served over mostly cabbage and random salad leaves with almost no rice. Chirashi traditionally is served over a bowl of rice. When I got to the rice, it was undercooked.

My boyfriend got the firecracker roll and the salmon did taste off to us. After reading other lower rated reviews, I’m hoping it’s not food poisoning to come.

Our service was also not great. Our waiter seemed sweet but never checked in to see how we were doing/if we wanted anything else. I had to ask her to clear the oysters off the table and she seemed confused at the concept of making room for incoming dishes. She also didn’t tell us what the rolls were when she brought them out and put the orders in front of the wrong person. I think another waiter was more interactive with us honestly.

So yeah won’t be back. Slow service and very sub par sushi. Not sure what the hype is about.

Disclaimer: I really don't like to leave bad reviews; this is just my honest opinion based on my experience. They just drag me to the dark side when they serve me bad food. So, here's my funny take on a horrible eating experience that didn't end up being so funny.
Oh boy, prepare yourself for a tale of epic proportions--a dining misadventure that rivals the best of comedy shows. It all began with an invitation from the manager who extended a direct invite to the esteemed foodie blogger crew, @we_hungryaf. Little did I know, I was about to embark on a gastronomic rollercoaster ride straight into the Twilight Zone of culinary disasters. We have a mutual understanding of exploring the culinary wonders of the world. We even bring each other goodies from our gastronomic exploits. But this time they should have kept their visit a secret. They could have saved me from this culinary calamity. I might just have to view their IG posts like everyone else from now on.
A lot of folks really hyped up this restaurant. The heart of the culinary chaos was the Fighting Fish Sushi Burrito. With expectations high and taste buds primed for a flavor showdown, I eagerly awaited the clash of Ahi Tuna, salmon, and shrimp tempura. Alas, what I encountered was a battle of confusion--a wild tussle between kani, avocado, pickled red onions, and kabayaki that left my palate utterly perplexed. And those so-called house-made sweet potato chips were overcooked and inedible? They were so hard that I almost cut my gums. In fact, I shared my concerns with my friend about the spoiled fish smell. My olfactory senses never fail me, and this time they screamed danger. Thank goodness I didn't venture further into their culinary escapades. But hold on tight, my friends, for the grand finale of this comedy of errors--the dreaded food poisoning. Yes, you heard it right. The universe decided to spice up the proceedings with a dash of gastro-disaster, turning my meal into a punchline. They say laughter is the best medicine, but I'm not sure if it applies to this particular case.
So, take my humorous tale with a grain of salt, or perhaps a pinch of laughter. Don't take it from me, try at your own risk. As for me, I'll be steering clear from food follies for a minute. May your culinary adventures be filled with laughter, delightful flavors, and a good dose of common sense. Bon appétit!

I think we caught them on a bad day. The rice that’s apart of the sushi rolls were old + hard + dry. The classic salmon roll confused me bc it’s salmon had a nasty fishy aftertaste but the salmon sashimi was great. Tiger tempura was drenched in the spicy Mayo so that was majority of its taste too.

It's hard to find a spot in Richmond with good quality fresh fish dishes. This place is one among few.

Their happy hour is a great deal. I love the flaming tuna nachos, salmon/avocado sushi, and a nice glass of sake.

Super fresh, the salmon sashimi was beautifully marbled & buttery. Minimal selection of fish but I see this as a plus. You're guaranteed fresh, high quality fish. The Tiradito was a bright & wonderful application for yellowfin. The Lemongrass martini was a perfect pairing for our meal. The rolls were very well done. We're looking forward to returning soon!

We got here without a reservation on a Friday night. We recommend a reservation. We got here at about 6pm and put our name on the list and was told 45 minutes and if we wanted we can sit at the bar for service if there are free seats. I gave her my name and phone number twice and watch her write it down. She said she call or text. We went down the streets for a drink and at about 40 minutes went by and we walked back. She looked startled when we walked in and it was less busy then before. I asked if there was availability and she said "um I tried to call you guys but there was no answer." I never got a call or text, and all the tables empty were reserved. We sat at the bar since that freed up and placed an order. The bar tender was great and the wife appreciated the NA bar options. We got edamame and two rolls. The edamame was a small bowl and not enough salt really but the sushi was pretty good. Took a while to come out, but it was enjoyable. I don't like cucumber or avacado in my sushi and 90% of the sushi on the menu had those. FYI. Other down side is if you like your miso soup, which comes with sushi, is in the bottom 3 miso soups I have had. Surprisingly, Sushi King has better miso soup. All and all ok experience, but there are so many other sushi places in town may not go back.

Looks like a swanky little place. The staff was down to earth and really great with suggestions on food and drinks. I had to navigate some allergy issues, but that was easy when talking it out with the waitress.
Prices were on par for sushi, not as expensive as the place looks like it would be. We were there for the sushi. The menu has other alternatives. You are looking at 10 to 20 dollars for most appetizers and entrées with a few falling outside either end of that range.
Decor was simple, clean, and pretty cool with good lighting. Tables are smaller, would be better for smaller groups of four or couples, but I am sure they can accommodate for larger groups.
There was a well stocked bar. However, I wasn't able to explore it in as much depth as I would have liked to on this visit. Saki was their spirit of choice or specialty. They offered it hot or cold, by the shot or by the glass.
Parking was easily found on the main street. We parked a block away from the intersection that the restaurant is near. Seemed safe, and nothing was to worry about. There were people out walking around late evening. Even with a basball game playing in the stadium down the road, the traffic wasn't too bad in the area.

Great food, terrible service, inexplicably loud for so few tables. Hang some baffles. The food was really phenomenal though, so I'd recommend takeout rather than suffering the rest of it.

Fighting fish is awesome- best sushi in richmond, our new to go. It also has a well thought out bar cocktail menu. Just got the Elder millennial and was fabulous, but every cocktail I’ve done there is art. The flaming tuna nachos are probably my current favorite substance. A bit spicy, lots of tuna, tomato and roe - just awesome combo. Service is fast, friendly to call ahead. Just a great place.

So I am giving this experience 4 stars ONLY because of how hard it is to order takeout. The Sushi Burrito is definitely 5 stars..DELICIOUS! The server was nice and efficient, and the atmosphere was very laid back, in spite of being on a horrible stretch of The Boulevard. I have tried for 2 DAYS to order takeout from this restaurant, as I live in Mechanicsville and work in the West End. Every time the "wait" time was an HOUR or longer! I called at one point because when they OPENED at noon, their wait time was 90 minutes for takeout. The young lady said she would check to see if that was accurate. She came back on the phone and told me 60 minutes, not 90. Well, I decided to wait after lunch and try again, about 3:15..still an hour wait for takeout. I finally just drove to the restaurant to dine in, and 10 minutes later when I got there, I only saw 2 tables with people. There were at least 2 servers and 2 managers by my count. I ordered, ate, and paid, and I was STILL out of the restaurant before 60 minutes. If the rest of your food is as good as that burrito was, you guys are missing out on business. I can understand if it's a longer wait time when you're busy, or if you're understaffed, but neither of those scenarios was the case. Why not just have only dine in business? I'm saying you are missing out on A LOT of revenue. Too bad, I wanted to give this place 5 stars, especially since the burrito was as good as I heard it was. Maybe someone will read this and realize that we all don't always have time to visit and stay, but we'd still like to order take out and enjoy your delicious food, too. Hopefully my next "visit" will be worthy of 5 stars.

This might be a very unfound gem of a Sushi joint in Richmond. I must have driven by them 100's of time and never knew they were a restaurant. Looks more like an old warehouse, but find some parking on Boulevard and try this place out. They have Fantastic Sushi! Once you walk in, it's a totally different vibe than their outside appearance. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great. It took a little while for our food to come, but they a couple of large tables in front of us. We'll worth the wait though. Nice, large rolls. Very fresh and tasty. We will definitely be back!

Don’t judge a restaurant by its cover. I must admit when I was driving to find parking (while looking for the restaurant) I didn’t see anything that stood out like eat here. Until, I walked in and was impressed
The waiter/ bartender was very helpful and friendly. For my meal I had the salmon wontons and the soft shell crab sushi, I recommend this place!
