First original hibachi and sushi bar in Richmond, VA.
Kabuto is a nice spot with great service, and the overall experience was enjoyable. The ambiance is pleasant, making it a good place for a night out with friends or family. Our chef really stood out – he was friendly, engaging, and made the meal entertaining with his cooking skills and interaction. The staff, in general, were attentive and made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the evening.
That said, while the food was tasty and well-prepared, the portion sizes were a bit underwhelming for the price. It feels a bit on the expensive side given how much food you actually get. For the amount spent, we expected either larger servings or a little more variety on the plate.
Though the experience was enjoyable, the price-to-portion ratio is something to consider. Because of that, I probably won’t be rushing back anytime soon, but I can definitely see myself returning in the future for another fun night out. If you're looking for a good teppanyaki experience with excellent service and don’t mind spending a bit more, Kabuto is worth a visit. Just be prepared that it may not feel like the best value for what you pay.

This is easily one of the worst restaurants I’ve ever been to. There’s absolutely no ventilation for any of the hibachi grills, leaving the entire place filled with smoke. You’ll walk out smelling awful, and it lingers long after you leave.
The food was equally disappointing—the fried rice, filet, and shrimp were the worst I’ve ever had. Nothing about the meal was enjoyable.
While the staff was friendly, it’s not enough to make up for the experience. I wouldn’t eat here again under any circumstance.

We loved our visit. The attendants, servers, and chefs are amazing. We went to celebrate our daughter's 16th birthday. It was a special treat! Some of the unique things are that everyone is served at the same time, you watch the cook prepare the meal, the cook interacts with everyone. They provide samples and entertain the young and old. Our 3 year old grandson kept saying, "this is wild, this is some fun!". Imagine going to dinner and everyone is having a good time. This is a special place.

What a gem and a truly exceptional dining experience!
Dining at West Broad Kabuto in Richmond was a delight, and I can confidently say it ranks among the best hibachi and sushi experiences I've ever enjoyed. Upon entry, we were welcomed by a warm atmosphere that immediately made us feel at home. The restaurant's ambiance is tranquil and soothing, ideal for a fun night out with friends, family, or for celebrating a special occasion.
The hibachi chefs at Kabuto are true artisans. Observing the chef's intricate knife skills and food preparation right before our eyes was both entertaining and awe-inspiring. The dishes were superb! The steak, shrimp, and chicken were cooked to tender perfection, flavorful and expertly seasoned. The fried rice was airy and fluffy, while the vegetables retained the perfect crunch. The sauces, especially the yum-yum and ginger sauce, complemented the meal beautifully, enhancing the flavors without dominating them.
The sushi was exceptional—the finest I've tasted in RVA. The Itamae's (Sushi Chef) craftsmanship was remarkable, presenting us with a visually stunning and tastefully balanced edible artwork, a true homage to the ocean's bounty.
The standout feature was undoubtedly the ingredient quality; everything tasted remarkably fresh, clearly reflecting the restaurant's commitment to premium sourcing.
The service was equally impressive. Our server was congenial, attentive, and ensured our dining needs were met throughout the evening. The courses were timed perfectly, allowing for a smooth and enjoyable dining experience. Our group relished the meals and the presentations.
In summary, Kabuto provides an outstanding dining experience, boasting delectable cuisine, masterful chefs, and a hospitable environment. For those in Richmond with a hankering for hibachi or sushi, this is the place to be.

I remember when this was like the only hibachi place in town and it was always packed! Has been quite a while since I've been here, but the kids and I were out tonight and they wanted some Japanese Hibachi. I think this place burned down years ago, but it looks really nice inside. Still a lot of space and tables. They have a hibachi side and then they also just have a sushi bar. My kids loved the display when you enter of all the things Japanese related and the Samurai Armor. They have a large Koi tank in the entry as well. They still require masks, even with the mandate gone and will check your temperature. Staff was very friendly and attentive. We had a fun chef, he joked with us quite a bit, hid skills may have been a little off, but he made up for it with his personality. Everything was cooked just right. My daughter and I got medium rare steak and my son got salmon. I got a few rolls of sushi as well. They tasted good, but I thought they were a little on the small size. Quality of everything seemed very good too. Once finished I asked the kids if they liked this place or the other Hibachi place better that we've been to the last few times and they both said Kabuto's. So this might become our go to Japanese Steak House again.

If I could give 10 stars, I would. We were greeted by the host and seated promptly. Our server, Sugae, was absolutely delightful and funny. She had us laughing and in turn we had her laughing. The "show" of the Hibachi chef, Peter, was entertaining and interactive. The food was not only plentiful, but delicious! We got a standard roll of spicy salmon, a baked eel roll, a sashimi plate (platter), and each got Hibachi. I had 3+ meals. I got some warm sake with mine. Mmmmm... Once again, the food was so delicious that we just dug in, no pictures. Next time!
We try lots of different things and determine how we feel based on that. This is going to be a regular spot. Love the atmosphere, staff, and food. Keep it up! Arigato! ありがとう!

Waited an hour at our table and when the chef arrived, we were told they forgot to heat the grill. Twenty minutes later we received a Chet who made all of our filet mignons wrong. Half our table walked out We didn’t get the noodles, many veggies or any refills. No birthday song. No Birthday dessert. Horrible horrible horrible service.

Nice Hibachi experience. The only thing that would have made our experience better is the greeting at the door. They were just open and hour, the front door was wide open but the little old lady seemed annoyed we were there. I'm assuming she is the owner. The chef for our table was nice, but everyone in general seemed a bit down or not so happy.

I was overcharged $70 for my order. When I called about it they first lied and said all managers left for the night then hung up on me. When I called back they then claimed the server mixed up my check with another party at the table which isn’t possible being that me and the other party checked out at separate times. I was then hung up on again after they claimed to give me a refund. Very unprofessional and sketchy stuff going on.

They charged us $18 for 1 shot of whiskey and when asked they said that’s how much it costs and that there wasn’t a price on the menu.. we paid over $100 for mediocre food and bad service with a automatic gratuity added for 2 people! We were invited to come and eat with family. Ridiculous we will not be going back

Great place to eat and the food was delicious. Some may say kind of pricey, but that is to be expected at a place of this nature so let's be realistic about this. The only flaw was that our particular chef wasn't as "entertaining" as the adjacent tables. He did a great job with cooking the food but I'm sure we all go for the shrimp tossing and such. He tried to make up for it towards the end of our meal (mainly because he noticed our party enjoying the show at the other tables) but it was too late. Great attraction though. Would highly recommend. Great portions too by the way....

The waitress was not very attentive, and it took quite a while to get refills on our drinks. Looking around, the restaurant is very dirty. The pictures on the wall are covered in grease, there’s no ventilation, and the place is very dirty and run down. We will not be going back here.

Made a reservation for 4:30 and got there and was told it would be a 30 minute wait. 2 groups (2 people and 3 people) walked in before us. Neither had reservations. They walked back before we did as well as 2 other groups. Host dude never spoke to us again after the initial conversation. The tank smelled like it hadn’t been cleaned in a while. Some people were told to sit on a bench area and others were sat in the bar area (where we were sitting) everyone at the bar was basically ignored and everyone in the bench area was being taken back. Then all of a sudden the host disappeared with probably 12 people waiting at the stand. We got up and left. First experience going and I wish I had listened to the negative reviews before we went. Smh

I truly could have cooked this at home and just paid them for the yum yum sauce 😞

My family & I have been going to Kabuto for few years now for one of our close friends Birthday. We had a reservation for 730 with a party of 8. When we arrived we were informed that they were 20 min behind & we were ok with that. Half hour later the hostess apologized stating they're waiting on people to leave. Finally around 815 we're seated. The server (very sweet young lady) came in & took drink orders & then returned to get the food order. Two of us ordered extra veggies & our friend she ordered filet mignon. For our 3yr old we ordered him tenders & fries. The cook came out & started to prepare the meal & for the life of him he couldn't do a show for us bcuz he kept dropping the utensils as if he was nervous. The cook put 2 strips of steak on the grill & a handful of veggies (only onions, broccoli, & mushrooms). Remind you its 7 of us & two of us asked for extra veggies. So I proceed to get the server & ask her are we being charged for extra veggies & she stated yes. She seen there wasn't extra veggies being prepared so she leave & comes back with onion, broccoli, & carrots. Finally the food is done & when the tenders came out for my son they were so hard as if they been cooking since we placed the order. The server seen that they were brick hard so she apologized & asked did we want more. I started no bcuz my son was happy with his fries & by this time it's almost 10 & I was over it. My friend who ordered the filet mignon was given a steak that was tough & chewy. The server apologized for everything & a supervisor came & spoke to us & she stated that the manager would like to speak to me about the tenders. She kept insisting & begging me to come with her. So I asked where are we going & she stated "to the bar, come on, I'm sorry but take a shot with me". I stated no ma'am I don't drink & it's ok just take the tenders off my ticket & it's ok bcuz my son is happy with his fries. The lady kept begging for me to come see the manager & I told her no bcuz as a manager he should come to us. My husband & my friend went to go speak with the manager only to find him at the bar drunk. The poor lady that tried to rectify the problems (even though you could smell the alcohol on her) he got mad with her & pushed her & she cried. She fixed the ticket & before we left I reminded her that she don't allow no one to put their hands on her & I pray that she'll get out of that place. I see why our service sucked & that explains why we were there for over 2 hrs bcuz staff was too busy drinking. Worst experience in all our years of going & definitely our last time going there. The store manager couldn't come to us bcuz he was very intoxicated & kept expressing that he's gay & I have no idea what his sexuality have to do with anything!! I just pray this don't happen to anyone else bcuz it could of went totally left due to alcohol being involved

They use to sing happy bday and we would order the smoking icecream cake but all of that stopped. The food does not taste good at all! The prices have gone up but service sucks. They use to have zucchini and squash and onion and separate mushrooms and Brussels sprouts but now it hard broccoli and carrots. Nothing is the same and this place have really gone down. Whenever we went to Kabutos it was always packed and the other day it was only 3 other groups of people. I see why now. We will never come back to Kabutos again.

This restaurant serves pure, expensive garbage food.
I ordered the Samurai (35 dollars), expecting to be great food.
I ordered a 5 dollars drink.
My friend ordered the same drink with rum (10 dollars).
He couldn't taste any rum at all.
They force an 18% tip upon everyone at the door.
Total price out the door for two expensive garbage meals 100+ dollars altogether.

The food was average hibachi tasting. The wait staff was very rude and did NOT communicate with the cooks; so if you are allergic to something, don't go there. The cook will not know until he's already mixed the food together on the flat grill. The best experience for me at this Kabuto's was the chef we had at our table. He was a good cook and very entertaining. I wish I knew his name. He's a more solid Asian man. He actually kept our experience from being the worst ever. I will probably not revisit this location again.

Came for lunch on a Wednesday, and they seemed super understaffed. The server was rude and not so friendly. The chef was cool. But my biggest problem was the lack of ventilation from the cooking on the tables. The smog was so heavy that I legit coughed because I could hardly breathe. I've been to a few of these types of restaurants and I've never experienced this before. Food was basic. I've had better.

Have been going to this place for years and have always loved the food. It’s very consistent and the express is generally quiet fast. Overall it’s a decent value for money. That said, this place has epicly bad customer service. Just recently I came in when the google listed their hours for lunch until 3. I got there at 2:02 and waited for anyone to greet me. After several minutes some rude waitress says something like “YOU ARE LATE ITS 2:04 NO ONE HERE TO COOK” all the while I steadily see other people eating. It made me laugh because clearly they didn’t care about losing the money of four people and the place is empty the vast majority of the time I visit so I know for a fact they need the business. Other times I’ve come in during lunch hours and they will just tell me oh we have a big group we have no one to help you or other goofy reasons. It’s funny because they know who I am, me and my wife have been going there for 10 years or maybe more? And my wife and her family have been going for idk 20 plus years? It’s sad because my mother in law used to love this place but one time due to their ultra rude customer service and accusing her of not paying she hasn’t gone back in 15 years or so. It’s amusing how much money this place has lost due to extremely poor customer service. I’ve met the owner and her son previously. Seem like super people. I hope they read this and think about how to better improve customer service. Again the food is excellent and is a good value. The sauces including the yum yum and salad dressing are excellent. I’d gladly update this review if service improves at all.

The cooked food was great and the cook was nice. Disappointed that there's currently no sushi and they were out of something for a drink I wanted, appears they'd been out of that for a while. The waitress was also unfamiliar with a drink on the menu (had a Wasabi rim) so asking to modify it was a mini conversation. The soup was extremely salty and the salad dressing had a fishy taste to it. Overall experience was ok, your average hibachi place.

Chicken hibachi good serving size. Had enough for leftover snack. Salad sauce was too salty so could not eat salad. Over $23 for meal, plus tax, mandatory 18% tip no matter if eat solo or with small or large group, and drink so not place all can go to often. Experience depends on chef and one had today did good with food but no energy for the experience. Server was very attentive. Good for special meals, otherwise make it at home.

Our chef complained the first half of the “experience” about the servers don’t know how to take orders quickly enough and chefs get yelled at for being ten minutes late. Speaking of our experience, of which there was none. No fire, no onion tower, or train, or tossing the chicken into our mouths, nothing. He cooked for maybe 10-15 minutes and then left. Dressing for the salad was super bitter, yum yum sauce was watery. The filet had almost no seasoning.
Very not typical of most hibachi experiences

Really disappointing experience. We had a reservation for 7:45 pm. After not being seated for 20 minutes we then waited at the table for a server for another 20. No drinks, not even water, in an overly warm and smoky room. Our chef did not arrive at the table to begin cooking until 9:15pm. The shrimp appetizer was served at the end of the meal, and several people in our party initially did not get what they ordered. I have eaten here many times but this was the first time since the pandemic. I will not be back anytime soon.

I made a reservation to have a birthday dinner at this location, only to show up and be told I was not on the list when I know I called myself to make the reservation. This was highly disappointing and unacceptable, and I was completely embarrassed in front of my entire dinner party. I will not be returning.

Went there to celebrate 4 January Birthdays, food was GREAT, hadn't been in years! A little pricey but you do get dinner and a show! We had 6 people in our group and it was easy to watch what's going on and talk to each other!

The food was just okay aside from the entertainment of the chef. I’ve experienced much better food at competitive restaurants in other areas of Virginia.

Our family went to Kabuto last night for Christmas dinner. They are able to seat 8 people per table so we sat across two tables as we had a large group. As is normal, children like to sit with the other children in their group so my 9 y/o sat with an 8 y/o cousin at the neighboring table. I made it clear upfront when we advised how checks would be split that my child was sitting at the neighboring table.
The server took a while to get to us which was fine because the tables weren’t all filled up but they did have about 5 other large groups to tend to, and we all know staffing is difficult these days especially on a holiday. However, drinks took forever to come once ordered, some were brought while others never were, refills were rare, and the soup had steam but was lukewarm and lacking flavor when you actually drank it.
Our chef was amazing but the one at the table with the rest of our family was not entertaining or personable whatsoever.
We got through dinner and found out that the waitress messed up checks so several of us were delayed in leaving because we had to try to get things corrected, and this is where things went majorly south.
We kept questioning a shrimp app that was on one of the tabs and finally the waitress clarified that it was ordered by my 9 y/o child who was sitting with a cousin at the neighboring table. I confirmed with my child and was clearly okay with paying but politely offered feedback to the waitress that in the future she may want to consider confirming with parents before putting additional orders through; I have been a server myself and would certainly have double checked with the parents as the app was in addition to the meal that already came with shrimp.
The waitress (Manuela) took offense and responded with “Many children are independent.”
I raise my child to be independent but what a 9 y/o is not independent enough to do is pay for a hibachi steak meal plus a shrimp app, especially when the hibachi meal comes with shrimp already.
The waitress began arguing with me over whether or not she should confirm such a thing with a parent, yet another staff member who was helping her correct the tabs politely told our waitress “This is why we train staff to double check orders with the parents.”
The waitress walked away and later returned, as I was waiting for my change from her colleague, and the waitress decided to make smug faces at me like a child. Absolutely immature and disgusting behavior by this employee.
I have never in my life had a service industry employee behave like that towards me to the point where I got as upset as I did.
The one star is being left for the chef and the other staff member who did her best to mediate a situation created by her unprofessional and rude colleague, but no other part of this restaurant experience deserves a single star.

the cook very considered a lady in our group is allergic to seafood, he cook her food first, after that he cook the rest of us food. The flavor is delicious. Our waitress was no the most pleasant person and look upset when we ask for something extra. I understand when they add the 18% to the bill, but I don't appreciate specially when the waitress has bad attitude. The atmosphere is nice. Overall I enjoy my meal and I try to oversee the waitress and enjoy my self.

It would be better with cleaner grills that don't have crumbs all in the crevices... For the price it should be cleaner

If I could rate this restaurant lower, I would. I’m not one to leave reviews but I had such an awful experience and never got any sort of closure or assistance. Went with my boyfriend & we only had ordered one entree each & I was charged for the entire party behind me & the server gave me an attitude when I asked how it was going to be taken care of. I was supposedly “refunded” that day, but it was never shown on my bank statement. I called the manager 5 different times to speak to the owner, as for some reason I wasn’t getting my money back, and the owner was always out when I called. Took 2 weeks & the owner was very nice but not apologetic at all. Said he refunded me & still, nothing. Had to file a fraud claim through my bank so I could get the money back from the accidental charge. Overall, just not a great experience from the management side. The food is good, but that’s the only positive thing I have to say.

We had a wonderful experience here. We have visited this restaurant many times in the past and I would always be in the 160 price range, however this time the bill was 200+ and we ordered nothing out of the ordinary. I'm assuming it's just "inflation" because the amount of food and what was on the menu. I get it Hibachi has always been a little on the pricey side but this is WOW.

Went in to place a take out order, after I had called and was informed over the phone that they don't do sushi or appetizers, they would only take card.
Went in and tried to place the order, a man told me that they were closed, I pointed out that the website says order lunch till 3 pm. He said it wasn't their site, I pulled the address from the website and he just said they were closed and the website wasn't theirs.
Worst customer service. If they were closed, why not tell me that over the phone, or tell me that they would be closing soon?

The food was great, but the environment was not.
There aren't fire hoods, so the flames sometimes touch the ceiling. Every station has marks above them where flames touch and it honestly made me very nervous. The steam/smoke just rolls along the ceiling, it's just not cool. But the food was very good.

The main reason anyone goes for habachi is the show and interaction with the chef. Our chef was not in a good mood and just went through the motions of cooking the food. We did witness another chef interacting amazingly with their customers so they're not all bad. Plus we had a nice waitress and bus boy. The lady bartending was slow, had a poor attitude, and made poor quality drinks. Overall, the food is good, the decor is really interesting and pretty, and the koi pond is a fun touch (especially for young kids). It's hit or miss with the experience you have with your chef.

Food Excellent, Server good, would have given a greater compliment to the server, the reason I didn't give more, is that the server bought you, to go boxes before you as the customer could ask for them.. we felt extremely rushed out! So we couldn't fully enjoy the food or ambience or each other for that much, our dining experience felt like a drive thru.

What an amazing experience! Our chef, Maui, went above and beyond to make my frightened children feel comfortable and turned our night around! Dinner was fantastic with perfectly cooked steak, scallops, shrimp & chicken! Will be coming back soon :)
