YamaChen Sushi continuously seeks ways to offer delicious tasting Japanese cuisine in an inviting and warm atmosphere.
We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trials and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidify our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.
Very cool interior design and huge shout out to the staff for how friendly they are. They gave us free cheesecake bites at the end of the meal and were incredibly attentive while my friend and I ate.
The sushi was pretty good but the chicken and noodles dish was just middling. Good place if you're in the area but not exactly destination dining.

We had an exceptional dinner at YamaChen. Vicky was fantastic and epitomized great hospitality. We ordered a sushi boat, and Vicky graciously offered us sake, three appetizers, and dessert on the house. The food was delicious, sushi fresh, and the atmosphere delightful. I cannot praise this place this enough!!
My partner and I came here to try it out as we’ve passed it several times in our normal commutes and WOW!!
We loved this place so much that we had to come back a few days later for more.
Our first date we had chicken ramen, 3 sushi rolls (Philadelphia, spicy tuna, and super duper roll), a beer, a glass of (amazing) plum wine, steamed gyoza, and complimentary edamame, 2 spring rolls, and 2 cheesecake squares. All of that for about $62 pre-tip!! That price for all of that food is unheard of in 2023. If you want this quality and dimension of taste in food anywhere else, you’ll easily pay double than you will ever pay at YamaChen’s.
Additionally, the service is phenomenal. The young lady that served us was so considerate and even brought over a little bowl for me to try my boyfriends ramen.
Our second date (first few pictures) we came back and ordered the chicken ramen again, fire chicken with rice, beer, plum wine (because I’m in love with it), 2 rolls (spicy tuna and salmon roll), with complimentary edamame, 2 spring rolls, and 2 cheesecake squares. Again, all for about the same price!!
Beautiful decor, amazing service both visits, and food to die for all for a great price.
10/10 recommended.

The food was honestly so great! I ordered sashimi-high quality and spicy California roll and every was was so good!! Thai teas was so great!!! I loved every single thing. The small detail to this restaurant is I think what really sold me. Utensils are packages and sealed and so are the chopsticks. I ordered my drink in the end and they gave it to me in a Togo cup. Everything was so thoughtful. Service was 1000/1000 so welcoming as soon as you walk in, they were so sweet and attentive. The decorations way too cute. I would definitely go back. It’s a must try!!!

Stopped for lunch. Was here for a family member. Ambiance is a mix of Chinese and Some Japanese.
Hostest was nice. Have free samples while I waited. Tried a rainbow roll was not my favorite. I think they used eel as the base. Also had spicy tuna roll. Good base and fair flavor.
Sashimi salmon seemed smallish in cut. Quality was fair. Was not a bright color and was not old.
Salad was good as were the vegetable roll. She called a vegetarian roll.
Ate alone. Portions were large

A very calming atmosphere. A little pricey ($17.55 for the Spicy Fire Chicken entree without tip) but worth it, as the portion was large and came with rice. Delicious food and very kind staff. I always get take out, and it’s always timely.

The food was fresh, well seasoned, and neatly prepared. We loved how welcoming the staff were and how clean and presentable the restaurant itself was. The entire dinner my partner and I couldn’t stop complimenting how wonderful we were being treated by staff and how amazing things were especially since we came in a bit later at around 8PM on a Tuesday night. We’ll for sure be coming back here!

Literally this the best sushi GEM. If you’re in Ashburn/Sterling I HIGHLY recommend. The food is amazing and it’s at a much more reasonable cost compared to all of the other Japanese options around here.

Saturday night hours are precious, so I am writing this to help suburban couples out on a lark save time and avoid this place: We landed here because our favorite sushi place was busy, and we had to catch a movie. The miso soup is watered down and flavorless. The salad dressing was inedible as the taste overwhelmed. Fried shrimp was okay and gyoza was fine, though I’m quite sure I heard the microwave laughing in the background. The hot/cold temperatures of the rolls supported my concern. The gyoza sauce was over-salted. The sushi was poor quality, and again, had overwhelming taste to the sauces. Really, this is mall food at a higher price with a more tasteless array of sauces. Note: I normally do not review restaurants online, but I found this experience so bad that the need to share was overwhelming.

Ok let me be clear - this is THE best sushi in NoVA. We just moved here from SoCal and have been looking for a quality sushi restaurant. This hidden gem is amazing. The quality of their ingredients, meticulous packaging, presentation, and care about the product they serve is just fantastic! The Lover, Ironman and Earthquake roll were on point! Even something as simple as a CA roll was made with great ingredients and rolled like it was a $100 specialty roll. I can’t say enough great things about this place. My wife and daughter are fans as well. First time here but certainly not the last. This will be our Go To sushi place in Fairfax.

Well I have been so many sushi places but the experience at Yama was not really great. If you are looking for a place to enjoy services and ambience, go for it. But if you are looking for the real food, it may not be a good idea.
1. Frozen food. All the fish were frozen and microwaved and even my salad dressing. When I got it, there was even ice crystals in it.
2. The sushi was kind unconventional and also oversweet. Don’t recommend.
The lady’s service was very good. They gave us a lot of in-house food but unfortunately they were not tasting good enough.
I spent 90 dollars on our meal, I don’t think it worth it at all.

We splurged on the sushi boat and boys thought it was the BEST THING ever! They wanted to take the boat home! The Volcano and Hawaii rolls were our favorite! Gyoza was also super good!
Appreciated the easy to read menu with good pictures, explanation and lots of options. We will definitely be back and look forward to it again soon!

Viki was my waitress and was extremely polite and pleasant during my visit. Not only was the customer service amazing but the food! The food was fantastic, I got the fried dumplings and the king crab roll. I was given Edame and cheesecake square on the house which were both delicious as well. The price point on all items was more than reasonable as well. Thank you to Viki and the chef, I had a great experience. My only complaint is that I live over an hour from here so I won’t be able to visit as often as I would like unfortunately.

We spend like $70ish for 3 people, with leftovers.
There is no specific “kids menu” but it’s not needed really. We got my son the chicken yakisoba and an apple juice.
I don’t see many restaurants offering Arnold Palmer drink so I got that. My husband and I shared a few rolls. We were given complimentary edamame, spring rolls and when your check is brought you get mini cheesecakes. A very nice treat.

This place is absolutely amazing! So much attention to detail, from the ambience of the decor, and even the uniforms, to the beautiful plating, everything is top notch. For the menu, be prepared for a lot of crab as 90% of the rolls include that as a ingredient. We were greeted by a very friendly server with a complementary plate of chilled edamame, and while our meal did not come with complementary salad and soup as most sushi establishments do, I ordered the miso soup, and it was probably the best I have ever had! $1.95 is definitely worth the “splurge”. Our meal surprised us with complementary egg rolls that were fresh and yummy, the sushi was all amazing and beautifully presented, and once again we were surprised with delicious cheesecake bites at the end with our bill. If I was forced to make a criticism, it would be that the wasabi could use more kick. You must try out Yamachen’s today!!!

These rolls are great and well put together and a good price for amount of food. Very happy with this place. Best place is Fairfax by far.

This is *not* traditional sushi. If that was the only issue here I wouldn't have left one star. The sushi here is just bad. The service was great and we were even given a couple different dishes free on the house but it simply wasn't good. One of the free things we were given were some spring rolls that were warm on the outside but cold on the inside, almost as if someone just microwaved them before they gave them out... very little flavor. The sushi was really sweet and experimental. Definitely not a place to go if your looking for authentic sushi.

I had an unfortunate takeout experience with this restaurant. I’ve eaten at great Japanese restaurants in the US and have also been to Japan. The miso soup was flavorless and sushi was poor quality quality. I was so shocked that I felt the need to write my first Google review. I hope that my experience isn’t representative of the typical dining experience there.

Yama chen was surprisingly good. I was expecting small narrow rolls of sushi but what we got were large rolls. They do not skimp on the ingredients. I appreciate the full customer experience from start to finish. Everyone who worked there are very nice, courteous, and very considerate and patient with children. The ambiance in the place is good with roomy booths. The place just looks tucked away as you can’t see inside the restaurant from outside. My family didn’t know if it was open when we passed by it.

After being in the NY and CT area for 8 years and visited most of the states, this sushi ain’t just the no 1 sushi in the VA-MD area but one of the best sushi places in the country. Don’t waste your money and time to find better sushi than this. Every time I go to other sushi places (in the Northern VA area) I regret it because the sushi they sell you can find at the supermarket. I have been in this restaurant over 50 times and the sushi every time is better and better.
Congratulations for your excellent sushi and the awesome customer service!!

Went to get take out. Spent about 80$ on Sushi. I was really disappointed. The rolls were all very sweet like they had a ton of mirin on them and the rice for each roll was overdone and very soft. Was pretty much inedible. All the specialty rolls involve shrimp tempura which is odd? Gonna be a hard pass in the future.

I've become a regular customer @ Yama Chen's, because the sushi, and really everything, is always fresh and delicious. The service is wonderful and the prices are reasonable.

Reliably good with excellent customer service and good prices, especially at lunch. I hesitate to write this review because I appreciate that it’s not crowded and thus feels like a safe option for dining in.

Visited YamaChens last night for the first time and to say it exceeded my expectations was an understatement! Not only did we received a large amount of food for a reasonable price, we were also given complimentary spring rolls and cheesecake bites. We started with miso soups, the love boat combo #1 which came with gyoza, 2 house salads and 4 special rolls! They also brought out edamame on the house to start. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was attentive and generous. We will definitely be going back!

Tonight was my first experience in YamaChen's Sushi House, but certainly NOT my last. I was surprised to find in this hidden corner of Fair City Mall a place that would completely satisfy my sushi needs. Everything from the venue to the food to most amazing server, Leo, was simply perfect. I have never written a review on a restaurant before, but my experience at YamaChen's was too great to not give them the recognition that they deserve. A true five star experience. I very, very highly recommend!

Atmosphere was nice, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the Sushi boats were delicious and an awesome gift for a friend! We got both of them and they were delicious and fun to look at!

Went here the first time on a whim and it was amazing. After a less than stellar experience somewhere else this was a welcome change. The food is good and the prices are affordable. The bathrooms were clean and smelled good which, honestly is a big thing. You can go to some places and the facilities are terrible. The ambiance inside is inviting and chill. The waiter was nice and even gave us a free sample. I’ve also used them for takeout twice. Each time the food was just as good as when I first had it. In the restaurant you’re given an individual….idk why the word is slipping my mind but you’ll see it in the photos. Anyway, in that “pack” comes chopsticks, napkin, tooth picks and a fork. There might be something else that comes in it but i could be forgetting it. You won’t be disappointed with this place. Also i got the salmon roll and the rainbow roll. You’re greeted with edamame and they gave us complimentary appetizer as well

The service is kind but the food is a little bit slow. The sushi here is in bigger size. I personally think the flavor can be more. The Spring rolls are very yummy tasty treat from the house! The chicken of fried noodle was surprisingly tender, my husband love it. Chicken Ramen soup is not salty, so we like it. For the Ramen if it can be more chewy, I will like it more. Over all, we are satisfied and will come back again.

Service was good but the sushi was kinda skimpy for the price. The slices of sushi was very thin

If you are looking for an awesome sushi place then this is the place to be! When we sat down they already gave us on the house edamame which was awesome to begin the experience with. We ordered tempura shrimp and it had the most magnificent sauce to dip it in. I couldn't describe it. You just got to try. Their house salad has the awesome ginger dressing as well. We also order boat combination number 2. I mean from the picture you can see how fulfilling it was. We had to take it home. In between, they even gave us veggie spring roll on the house. All the food we tried had awesome full flavors and you could tell they weren't holding back with their ingredients. I'm coming back here often since it isn't too far from Vienna wow =) so try them out!!

I don't do sushi, but I like Japanese, so this is a review of some non-sushi items.
The gyoza were okay, but deep-fried instead of pan-fried, so it's a bit like having those frozen microwavable things from the grocery store. Hot and crispy, but all you taste is the shell.
The chicken teriyaki was not good. It has the basics you'd expect, chicken breast in a sweet brown sauce. But the vegetables they added seemed odd, at least to American tastebuds. I don't know what's considered 'authentic' for this dish, I just know that cherry tomatoes, cabbage, and edamame beans aren't what anybody else serves, and don't work together.
You get the usual salad, which had peanut dressing. I was okay with that, until I took a bite and realized everything had already been tossed with some sweet oil.
Somehow, even the rice had an issue. They serve it on some big (banana?) leaf, I guess for decoration. But the flavor of the leaf, which is kind of musky, bleeds into the rice. This was a problem with the gyoza too. I assume this is an accident, but it doesn't help.
I'm not normally nitpicky, but it's frustrating that nothing tasted like what I expect or hope for.
On the plus side, the decor is pretty good with lots of dark-stained wood, the service was great, and apparently people like their sushi.

Very nice atmosphere and great quality food. Everything seemed very fresh and they had very good service. I wasn't a fan of a few items we got, but I believe that was more just my taste and not anything bad to say about them.

The host at the Yama Chen’s in Fairfax has a terrible attitude. I love the food and was a frequent customer but on multiple occasions I have had to deal with his awful customer service and at this point I rather order sushi from another restaurant.

Food looks better in the pictures that it taste. Terrible flavor. Customer service for pick-up order is terrible. Don’t waste your money or time.

Delicious food! Even gave us a complimentary sweet fried chicken! Great service, beautiful design and I can’t say enough about how awesome the food is! Would 10/10 recommend to come here if you have the money!

Really good sushi, very tasty and well made.
They were kind of rushing to get the orders (because of being just 2 guys for the whole restaurant + online orders which is a common thing now a days...) But even so, they managed to give us a really good service and very good food.
We'll be definitely coming back here very soon and, probably, very often.
100% recommended!
