Stopped in for dinner with family. We tried the Nabeyaki udon noodles and several hand rolls including: Shinobi special, Mexi, Spicy hamachi, Phoenix, and Rainbow. I thought the mexi was the most unique hand roll with hints of cilantro. One thing I normally enjoy about sushi are the contrasting flavors and textures. I have to say that in general I found this sushi to be disappointing. The fish was fresh but when I ate each bite it seemed muted in flavor… weak in those contrasting flavors I love. The texture was not varied either but I do realize that is a strong function of the hand rolls I ordered. Atmosphere was great and service was good and friendly. Prices are on the higher side but not ridiculous.

We wanted sushi as a family while we were downtown SLC. All of our favorites had 1-2 hour waits so we were on our way home when we saw Shinobi. Glad we stopped by. Delicious sushi, all very fresh and fish forward. Prompt service, nicely decorated interior, and friendly staff. We got the Samari, Shinobi Special, Winter, Spicy Hamachi,
Red Line, Playboy, and California rolls. All were pretty well executed with nice flavors, textures, and finishing sauces.

I wanted to love it so bad cause it’s so close to home. The environment is sterile. The staff was soooo friendly. My owner got the Alaskan and playboy and the Shinobi which were good. The calamari was bland and the jalapeño poppers were almost raw. The snow crab doesn’t taste like anything and the crunchy roll doesn’t either. Luckily it wasn’t bad, it just definitely wasn’t good.

Okay, this sushi was fantastic! Everything tasted really good and fresh. The Jalapeño poppers were really really hot though, we couldn’t finish them and I love spicy food!! They did not take the seeds out which I thought was common for Jalapeño poppers but maybe I’m crazy. That being said they were good. I would recommend the Mars roll. It was absolutely delicious and tasted the freshest of everything. I’d eat 2-3 of them myself. Service was really good and quick. The only downside I’d say was that the deep fried rolls we got (Vegas & Snow Crab) were kinda bland and nothing special. Or maybe that’s just my taste in sushi evolving from the simple things.

We discovered Shinobi through a sponsored add on Instagram. After looking at Yelp and Google reviews we had high expectations and were excited to try it. We came in a few minutes after opening and were seated right away. The decor was fun and the restaurant was spacious.
We were deciding on hand rolls and asked the waitress what types of hand rolls they have and it didn't seem like she knew the menu. She had to ask her co-worker about the menu. We ended up getting the calamari for an appetizer. It tasted mostly of breading and could barely taste the calamari. The large sashimi platter was $45 and the fish tasted off.. it didn't taste fresh at all and was slimy and warm. The tuna had a film on it and the salmon left some slimy spots on the plate. We were struggling to finish it.
We picked 2 rolls, the Phoenix roll and the firecracker roll. The firecracker was doused in sauce and you can't taste any of the fish. The Phoenix roll was okay.
The service could use some improvement. Our waitress came over a little after we started eating to give us our checks.. we weren't halfway through eating our food. When we were ready to pay, she cleared our table and passed by several more times but didn't grab the check. It took over 15 minutes for her to grab it. When she did ring us up, she was standing at the counter talking to her co worker for another 5 minutes before bringing us our check to sign.
Overall, the ambiance of the restaurant
was good, but the food wasn't. Our total ended up being $100 and it wasn't worth it. This was probably the most disappointing dining experience we've had.

This is the cutest little place! I’m always hesitant to go somewhere new in Salt Lake because of the parking situation. Went here on a Friday night & there was plenty of free parking, which I appreciated. The front door is located in the back, which was very confusing. I ended up walking around the whole building before figuring this out. I ordered a cosmopolitan drink. It was delicious & beautiful in design as well. We ordered the seaweed salad & edamame to share. Seaweed salad was pretty good, the sesseme oil was strong in this dish, but not overbearing. The edamame was really dry when we received it. It was also the last thing brought to our table, after our main course food. Which also seemed a little odd. My friend is gluten free so she ordered the avocado roll, Tekka roll, & Sake Maki roll. All three rolls seemed very simple & she really enjoyed them. I ordered the simple veggie roll, which was exactly as it sounds, very simple. Not my favorite, but it was okay. I also ordered the Shinobi veggie roll & I was in love with this roll!! It has tempura pumpkin wrapped in soy paper topped with fresh avocado. Highly recommend this vegetarian roll! My friend was not able to try it because of the tempura. I love that they have a few veggie rolls separate on their menu from all the other rolls. It made it easy to figure out which rolls I could eat. Staff was great & very attentive. I would definitely go back & do recommend for your next sushi outing!

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish! The sushi chefs and server were so friendly and extremely attentive. Pre-bussing happened literally as soon as I finished a plate. The sushi was the most fresh flavor I have experienced in the area, and the presentation was so awesome! I drove 1.5 hours to get here and will be returning here regularly! Thank you Shinobi for becoming my new #1 Sushi spot in the SLC area!

I've visited Shinobi at least a dozen times over the last year. It's always a top-notch experience. The sushi is prepared with care and flare. The staff are friendly and helpful. This last time, I ordered a gimlet with gin. OMG. It is the best one I've ever had, and I'm aiming to be a connoisseur! So smooth with just the right balance of sweet and tart. Eloisa, the bartender, is the Gimlet Queen! I've considered going back just for one of those. If you want a relaxing atmosphere, superb food and drinks, alongside neighborly service, then Shinobi is for you.

I say this with a lot of experience, they actually serve sushi correctly. The fish is at the correct temperature, well prepared and very high quality! Well done Shinobi. The servers need a little more training in table etiquette and need to touch the tables more. The ambiance is casual which is fine, not a date night vibe but I will go here over the fancier places because of the sushi every time!

I've had mostly good experiences eating here! The shinobi roll is my favorite. Tonight I got take out (shinobi roll and edamame) and the items were in the same bag causing the hot edamame to warm up the sushi which, as everyone knows, does not taste good warm. I couldn't finish it, even after cooling it off in the fridge. Also the edamame should have some chili flakes or some type of flavor to them. They were cooked well just very plain.

Our mental health clinic is just a block away from here. I went to eat Sushi with the hope to eat under an hour and to my glad surprised I was able to eat and paid under 35 minutes. I had an excellent tasty miso soup, a playboy sushi roll and a house salad. The service was excellent. I will keep coming back❤️

I’ve had Shinobi a few times, usually dining in and it’s been pretty good. I have tried some different appetizers and sushi each time. This most recent time, I ordered takeout and we got sushi, karaage chicken, and a teriyaki chicken bento meal. When my friend (who hates cooking and never does it) says the teriyaki chicken looks like something she could’ve made at home, that’s disappointing. I could’ve made better teriyaki chicken at home myself and not have paid $23. It was extremely dry and gave me flashbacks of when I cooked chicken for the very first time in my life. I’d go back for the sushi but beware of the teri chicken. You’re better off going to a place like the chain restaurant Mo bettahs for that.

This place deserves a 5 star review. Let me tell you why hope you have acouple minutes to read this.ive been pretty privileged by working my butt off my whole life to have been to all the sushi restaurants in town and let me tell you they just suck.ive been holding this review back for some time due to I don't want anybody to know my secret but it's time enjoy yourselves. This is the spot it's probably the only restaurant where the actual owner is making your food for you and he actually cares.the first time I went there he actually came over to my table and asked me how it was.ive been going there for 2 years and he's still there and the food hasn't changed at all.try his muscle shooters there amazing try his hibachi meals "money dip".all his sauce,s are actually made in house from scratch even his soy sauce is made from scratch. They all so run specials during football season which is amazing that a quality Japanese restaurant will due that.there so much going on and so much that is off the menu if your a regular it will blow your mind.this is a must stop on your bucket list let me tell you.enjoy yourselves this is my secret spot.

The area has a cafeteria feel to it. The sushi in the large sashi platter was slimy and obviously not fresh. The fish residue was stuck to the plate when lifting the sushi. The tuna had a film-like texture on it. The yellowtail and salmon was watery with random chewy chunks in it. The rolls (phoenix and firecracker) were drenched in a sweet sauce that did not let you taste any fish.
The waitress gave us the check less than a minute after handing us our entrees. She proceeded to try and take the check 2 times before we were finished. When we did finish, it took her 15 minutes to take the check and return it.
Overall, the worst dining experience I've had in Utah.

Honestly the freshest fish I've had since moving here. The roll selection is good and the carpaccios and nigiri are top tier. Everytime we go (at this point it's at least a dozen times), the service is great, the food is delicious, and the restaurant is super clean. Also, they can make a great cocktail (rarely encounter a place that can make a proper Aviation). I hope to see the place do well and stick around.

The sushi was very good and fresh!! Recommend for sure!

Have been here a dozen times, but today is the last. Worst waitress I’ve be ever experienced. Watched people come in after us, eat, and leave well before our meal was served. As waitress what was going on, she was confused and could not answer. 10 minutes before drinks arrived, 30 minutes for appetizers. One hour and 45 minutes to get two rolls and two nigiri. NOPE.
And for those that are curious, it was maybe 50% capacity.

We live walking distance to the restaurant, so we thought we'd give it a try. The first time we went as a party of two, the wait for sushi was as long as any we've had at any sushi spot. The food, was hit and miss, but the service was decent... until the end of the meal when we were given (and paid) the wrong check. It took so long to fix the problem that we were late for a show we had tickets for.
We decided to give them one more shot with our family as a party of six. The veggie tempura came out first after about 15 minutes. The first of the sushi dishes came out 30 minutes later. Our slow eating 10-year-old of the group was done with his dinner before the rest of us started ours. The server did not explain or apologize for the wait until we finally complained, and made no attempt to make good on the disastrous wait time. We had to ask for soy sauce to be brought when the sushi finally arrived and one of the two containers was empty. (Did I mention that one of the cloth napkins they gave us at the beginning was soaking wet for some reason?) And even after we told our server we wouldn't be ordering anything else--we would surely have not received it before closing time--we had to interrupt a social chat among the staff to ask for our check. I'm sure we weren't a priority since their 20% gratuity was already included for our party of six.
Two stars because despite the egregious wait time and horrible appearance of the sushi rolls, the flavor was good.
I have no idea how they're rated so high by other reviewers. We will not be back.

This restaurant has great potential, with outstanding chefs and exceptional waitstaff. However, I've rated it four stars because it appears that the owners may lack experience in running a business all together, which seems to place unnecessary stress on the employees. While I could be mistaken, and I do not wish to assign blame unfairly, my observations have led me to this impression of the establishment.

The food was good but the service wasn't great. Our server ignored us and we had to keep getting another server to help or just going and finding the things we needed ourselves. You can get the same quality of food at other restaurants with better service so we don't feel inclined to return.
Visited 2 years ago
Most of the food was fine although overpriced compared to similar dishes from other places we've been to in the area. Rolls were sliced inconsistently. Service was not terrible, but it wasn't good or neutral either. The server didn't check in with us, so we had to get help from other hosts/servers. We eventually had to ask for some of our food to go because we weren't being updated on how much longer it was going to take. We still tipped well because we know how low the base wages are for servers. But this was a disappointing experience, and the food/price is not good enough for a return visit.

We didn’t like rolls at all , but the worst thing is that when I tried Phoenix roll (just one piece) and asked to cancel it - the manager said that we can’t cancel! Moreover, we said that we are hungry and we want to order more food - we are not just cancelling and leaving - but we got denied. This is the only place I’ve been in USA where I had such experience…

A friend and I went here because of how close it was to a project we working on at the time. It's a small place but seems very spacious because it's not packed with a lot of tables, has a tall ceiling, and the all of the windows allowing natural light. It was also lunch time when we went and it wasn't busy. I tried muscle shooters with quail egg for the first time and it was really good! The sushi tastes fresh and looks good quality. Plus the waitress who took care of us was very nice! I would recommend!

The restaurant was very clean, even the bathrooms! The service was attentive, if a bit slow, as there was only one server but not a big deal. Excellent sushi restaurant! We stopped by here when passing through and arrived right as they opened at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon. The owner / chef was super nice, and the service was fast. The jalapeño poppers are made with spicy tuna and cream cheese, and they were delicious! The Red Line Roll was our favorite, with escolar on top! We had a sashimi plate and got some uni and toro, and then the chef recommended some ocean trout (umi masu) that was delicious. It's like salmon, only creamier in texture. The atmosphere is great, and the fish is fresh. Definitely a place for any sushi lover to try!

Stopped in on a whim one day expecting mediocre strip mall sushi. I can say I was blown away by the quality of Shinobi. The nigiri was fresh and delicious, all of the rolls were high quality and well made. I would rank this among the best sushi places in salt lake.

This restaurant has amazing shushi! It’s down the street from my house and I can’t believe I’ve never been there. The Red Line roll was so good! I eat a lot of sushi and I took a bite of it and sat back in my chair and I think my eyes rolled back in my head. Also they have an appetizer jalapeño poppers. It’s stuffed jalapeños with tuna and cream cheese. I am adding it into my rotation of restaurants.

Great traditional Japanese food. Miso soup was one of the best I had in SLC.

Best sushi in SLC 🤤. Try their sashimi platter and the shrimp tempura. Their house special sauce is so good.

Excellent service & excellent, fresh sushi! I like it simple so I ordered the negihama and the sake maki. Loved my choices.

I love the atmosphere and the staff here! The location is also great - I live in Rose Park and it's awful handy to have a sushi place nearby. We got four types of rolls - two of them were great and the other two were just good. I did appreciate that they have a variety of options on their menu. In addition to sushi, they have bento boxes and noodles and other things. If you're looking for easy and casual, this is a pretty good choice.

Really great sushi. Tasted very fresh. Server was very attentive and friendly. Prices were about average compared to other sushi restaurants.

I had the Bento box Salmon, rice, vegetable tempura and sushi. It was great! My husband and our friends ordered sushi and it was great too! They enjoyed their meals too! No leftovers except for me. I have Part I to enjoy my meal again! Thank you Shinobi!

I had the Vegas and Philly. I forgot to take pictures but the sushi was pretty good. We got the tempura veggies and they were super good. They grease was clean veggies were fresh and not greasy. They're super nice they keep your water full. I hope this place makes it because it pretty good. It's never busy we're the only table in there.

We were very impressed by how good the nigiri was (we had salmon and trout). Rolls were also good. Prices seemed pretty standard for sushi. Staff was very nice.

Hands down, one of the best sushi places in SLC! Each roll, was full of flavor, and fresh fish. A must try, is the Shinobi Special Roll. On top of that, Bri was our server and was amazing! Attentive, friendly & made our experience that much more better. Thanks Shinobi, for such a positive experience! ☺️

We love this cool and locally owned spot. The owner is almost always on site with a smile, often working behind the sushi bar and crafting some great rolls. The tuna sashimi is a favorite as are the rolls featuring shrimp and crab. There’s a nicely stocked bar and a great bartender serving up drinks to compliment the dishes. Just a good and nicely priced local spot that’s definitely worth a try b

First time trying out Shinobi Sushi, and we were completely blown away. We sat at the Sushi Bar and received outstanding service from both of the chefs and the wait staff. The Ninja roll is absolutely amazing!!! We cannot speak highly enough about the entire classic maki roll section and the Vegas roll. Do NOT skip on the yakitori. It was phenomenal. The rolls were out in minutes and the presentation and freshness of the fish was superb. Every flavor was on point. Make sure to ask for the eel sauce and spicy mayo they are made in house and killer. We found out that the owner and chef Ken makes 27 sauces IN HOUSE daily. Finished off with the mochi dessert and it was covered in whip cream and chocolate sauce. The atmosphere was modern and clean and the music was amazing all night. Will be coming back here weekly. New favorite Sushi Place in SLC.

The service was nice but the sushi was hit and miss. I got the zebra roll, the sake maki, and the ikura. The rice was very over cooked giving the whole experience a mushy texture. The zebra roll was very nice. If I went there again, which I’m not likely to do, I’d order that again. But the salmon was weird, and seemed half cooked through which is slightly alarming for raw salmon. It didn’t taste good. The Ikura was pretty nice and I added it little bits to the two other rolls to spice them up.

Wow, I'm so happy to have found this amazing new restaurant in the Marmalade district. Everything was just amazing. Bright open space with open kitchen and sushi bar, beautiful separate bar with Kirin & Sapporo on tap. I had the filet mignon and tempura shrimp bento box this time and it was perfectly prepared, fresh and a little of everything I like. Can't wait to come back and try sushi, I have a feeling I was missing
out. Great service and the atmosphere was one that Salt Lake has been missing. Thanks Shinobi, I'll be back
soon!!!

This place is over the top... must go. The saff and owners are proud of their restaurant and it shows. Clean, very clean and the food is awsome.

What I got was good, miso soup, spicy caterpillar roll, crunchy roll, and volcano roll. My problem is with the prices. I could have gotten the same rolls and soup somewhere else for a lot less, and I think it would have tasted just as good. The internal decorating was cool, and the service was fine. I won't be returning simply due to the pricing as what you get for the money is just average.

I hate SLC food and this place was really really good. Excellent artistry and taste profile on the sushi. Service was impeccable. Five stars.

It was extremely overpriced for the quality of food and experience. There are many options in the area that offer a better meal and dining experience for less. I wouldn’t return or recommend unfortunately. Wished we enjoyed it more.

I love this place! The atmosphere and staff are wonderful and the food is delicious. The fish is good quality too. They had no problem accommodating my boyfriend's gluten allergy, and they have tamari so it's not just sushi without any soy sauce. This is definitely our go-to sushi spot now!

We’ve eaten several times here, and there is a reason we keep coming back!! Ken is an amazing sushi chef that really lets us eat with our eyes! Not to mention his portions are huge. Best bar I’ve seen in a sushi restaurant with favorite Japanese beers on tap. Big parking lot means no fighting for paid parking in Downtown, you have no excuse not to try!

Fantastic sushi. The Shinobi roll is a must-have. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is chill and upbeat, but not too noisy, so it’s a great place to visit with friends over a meal.

Shinobi is our new favorite sushi restaurant in SLC. We love it 🥰
We stopped eating sushi in SLC besides Takahashi
We lokevthat they have several rolls without mayo and imitation crab. Plus, when they do, you can swap it out for real crab meat without mayo. They have few fried roll options and more fresh options, which we love. Their traditional Japanese menu items are excellent. The octopus salad is absolutely amazing. Their fish comes in fresh on Tuesday and Friday. It’s the best!!!

Ken is a gem and master of his craft. I live in the neighborhood and have made this one of my haunts. I've never had a bad experience here and will continue to enjoy Ken's nigiri and delectable handrolls. The Uni is a delightful buttery custard of the sea. The Hamachi and Maguro are fresh and delicious. The Umi Masu was to die for, and if I had the talent to extol the virtue of the Toro... Don't give this place a miss.

Wow! So good. New, authentic, quality start up family-ran restaurant and happy servers and chefs. Bri is awesome! And the guy with the beard had funny remarks, made the experience entertaining. Ordered the ninja roll, so good. One of the best sushi’s I had in a long time!
Atmosphere: 11/10, lovely plants in the restaurant and very clean! I could imagine this place to be busy and bussing. More people need to try this place.
Food: 9/10, when the place grows, it would be nice to see advertised organic/sustainability
Service: 10/10
Overall experience: 10/10 :)

This place is very authentically Japanese in their menu with some obvious American devotions thrown in, but their home-made soy sauce is one of the best I have had in the US and is better than a lot of Japanese soy sauces I have had. The fish and unagi are spot on, and the yakitori(though not very commonat sushi places in Japan) was great. I cannot praise this place enough.

Came here for lunch one Saturday and I’m happy about the new sushi spot in Marmalade! Sushi was good- I actually liked the vegetarian mushroom roll the most. I felt a lot of the roll options were a bit repetitive- like everything had tempura shrimp in it. We also got karagge which was good and crispy. Everything was good, but not great, however they are new and definitely need some time to get settled, it would seem. For being one of two tables everything was a bit slow but I was in no hurry. I’ll be back to try again soon!

There’s nothing better than perfect sushi two blocks away! I come here at least twice a week and it never disappoints. The staff are now my besties and Ken is a master sushi chef- everything comes out lightning fast! And it’s so very fresh.

We tried a classic roll, tempura roll, a couple pieces of nigiri, and some gyoza. Everything was very solid and a step above the regular Salt Lake City level. 5 stars, I will be back.
