Pho Thin: A Culinary Journey Rooted in Tradition
Embark on a culinary odyssey through Vietnam's heart with Pho Thin, a fusion of tradition and innovation. Our family's pho lineage dates back to 1955, when our ancestors shared their authentic Hanoi-style pho from humble street stalls. Inspired by their legacy, we've carried our culinary heritage across generations, introducing discerning diners worldwide to the authentic flavors of Vietnam.
Our pho is a symphony of tastes, featuring a rich, savory broth simmered for hours with aromatic spices and premium ingredients. We source the finest cuts of meat, fresh rice noodles, and crisp herbs to create an unforgettable pho experience that's both comforting and unforgettable.
I wanted to grab a bowl of pho for lunch, today, so I headed over to Pho Thin for the first time, ever, which is, “Temporarily operating in SAOLA Restaurant & Lounge building as a pop-up.”
When I arrived at noon, the parking lot was not crowded. There was only one woman working the front of house and one table of four seated on the Saola side of the dining room. The Pho Thin side was empty and I was seated at a two top facing the bar. The entire space is large, clean and modern.
The woman working the front of house was very friendly and quickly took my order of pho with beef tendon and extra beef tendon. I didn’t have to wait long for it to arrive. Typically, pho tends to be served with almost all of the liquid fat skimmed out of the broth. This broth had quite a bit of it, which I greatly enjoyed, except for the greasy splatters that appeared on my clothes. It was a bib or apron-required kind of pho. The beef tendon was just about perfect. I like it big. I like it chunky. Yum!
I enjoyed the pho enough that I plan to return with my wife for another bowl sooner, rather than later. I’m looking forward to trying other items on the menu.
I’m also looking forward to dining at Saola, which I was told serves Vietnamese and Asian-fusion cuisine. Strangely, I can’t find a listing for it on Google Maps.

After visiting Oktoberfest in Snowbird, we decided to stop here because we loved Vietnamese food. We checked out the reviews and felt it was a good choice. And we were pleasantly surprised! The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was incredible. It was lunchtime, so it was very quiet but enjoyable I really enjoyed the food I’ve got it’s one of the top Vietnamese places I’ve been to in a long time! I definitely will coming here more times than one! Really chill and incredible place would highly recommend anybody that likes Vietnamese food.

Surprisingly delicious! I loved the banh mi steak I ordered with the tempura sweet potato fries. They were amazing! My friend ordered the beef pho and she said it was really good. They even gave her extra noodles on the side since pho comes with so much broth.
I’m not normally into pho so I kind of cringe when friends suggest going to any pho restaurant but this place has plenty of other offerings - so if you’re like me - you too can find a great meal here. And our server was great and had solid recommendations. Attentive staff and very clean inside.

Would absolutely not return. Not because the food was bad (it was fine), but because they mislead you to the expensive side of the restaurant. Let me explain.
When you walk in, there is one entrance. Having been our first time, we had no idea there were two different restaurants, or really just sections, in the venue. Why would there be? Keep in mind, they have VERY different menus with VERY different prices. We went in, went to the host desk and she sat us in the area/table she wanted to. No questions, no explanation. Just "sit here". Bear in mind we are one of two tables with people at it in the entire place.
We sit and are looking all over at the menu for pho and cant find it. All we see are absurdly priced entrees for lunch. So we ask where the pho is because we say that's why we came here and she points to the one buried option on the menu with two meat choices. The price: TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS. For a big bowl of soup. $28. We're confused, but are starving from the day so we decide to split the overpriced pho with filet mignon as the meat and some basic gyoza which was also overpriced at 15 bucks. The food finally comes a while later, and the pho is fine. The filet mignon was nothing better than any beef normally in pho (actually a bit drier and less flavorful), so I'm not sure I buy this being a high end cut of meat. The gyoza was good, though only 4 small pieces. The waitress then comes over 90398403903 times to take away our food that is only half finished, and then disappears from coming by after we actually clearly finished our meal as we wait 20 mins to ask for the check.
Confused as to how this was such an expensive lunch at a pho restaurant with only one overpriced pho option, we see a sign by the door on our way out that says something to the effect of "tell us which restaurant you're here for so we can sit you in the right place". It is easily missed, and honestly a bit scummy that the hostess wouldnt ask (notably for lunch) which restaurant you're here for and instead just put you in the overpriced wannabe swank section. We get to the car and look up the "other" section menu and see that the pho is $15 or so and they have a more standard pho restaurant menu with several options. The hostess/waitress (same person) never asked which restaurant we came for (why would we ever assume one restaurant with one entrance has two restaurants? notably since we've never been to this restaurant that looks like it came in an Ikea kit. the whole place looks the same and has all the same design/tables/chairs/etc so its not like some places where there's a restaurant area and a bar area that are clearly separate sections-though the same establishment), and when we asked about pho and looked perturbed by the price, she never said anything about the other section or other menu. We could have been moved 20 feet over and paid half the price for the SAME FOOD. I find this to be extremely disrespectful to customers, and honestly misleading. While the food was fine, we will absolutely not return here - even to the side of the restaurant without the overpriced fake filet mignon.
Be better. You're the establishment with a confusing setup. Take the extra step and ask/inform customers of the options for sections, menus, pricing.

Really enjoying eating here the Pho is soooo delicious. It’s a higher end Pho with better quality cuts of meat and such a good broth. The restaurant itself is well designed and offers a great atmosphere. 5 stars all the way.

Ordered BanhMi for lunch take-out and it was a satisfying experience overall. The food: the bread itself which we're very particular about is freshly baked, crunchy outside and soft inside and has a bit of sweet taste to it. It has a generous serving of meat that is very tasty and well seasoned. Comes with a bit of some fresh veggies in it, topped with house sauce and fresh cilantro - yummm😋 Also comes with a side of fried sweet yam which tasted way better than regular french fries. The staff were friendly and nice. The only issue is parking which I think is expected considering there's a lot of construction going on atm.

Was confusing trying to find the entrance for this place, you have to use the main entrance to Saola. The pickup process isn’t very well organized, they should have a separate are to wait for pickups.
The Pho broth was pretty tasty, however for the vegetarian pho there were whole baby carrots and big chunks of tofu, no greens.
For the price it wasn’t worth it.

From parking to being seated to getting waited on, all proved to be an unpleasant experience. Knowing where to park was confusing. Then, it's confusing as to where exactly Pho Thin is at (it's inside Saola Restaurant in a small corner). But, there is only one staff member to seat customers as they come in. We said we had a reservation and gave them the name, but they seated us in the Saola side. We had to realize we were in the wrong place and asked to be reseated at Pho Thin, which took another 10 minutes. The waitress we had (there's only one) looked and acted like she'd rather do anything other than wait on customers. Definitely not a people person. She seated us at a table and placed paper menus on a very wet table. We had to ask her to dry it. Even then, she did a poor job, stating "we usually just let them air dry". That seems kind of a poor idea if you're going to slap paper menus on the just washed table. When she finally set the table, she only brought 2 napkins in spite of there being 3 of us. So, we had to ask for more napkins. We chose Pho Thin to try because they said they accommodated vegans. I ordered the vegan Banh Mi with golden tofu, but the bread was slathered with mayonnaise and so I couldn't really eat the bread part of my sandwich. Overall, one of the absolute worst dining experiences I've ever had in my entire life.

I am surprised this place is not packed all the time. I've been in SLC for a week and went to top rated restaurants, only to be disappointed. This is the freshest, healthiest, and tastiest food I've had all week. I wish people would keep their reviews honest and not give garbage restaurants five stars. Come try this place and you'll see what a five star rating is.

Service is really slow! Food is just average at best. The idea for this restaurant seems sound. Slightly upscale northern Vietnamese with cocktails by menu description. My experience -pho broth lacks balance. Huge hunks of tripe and tendon versus bit size pieces. Way too much meat. Not enough veg. Fried spring rolls could have had more mushroom/fungus and things other than pork. Just way heavier than a nicely executed spring roll. All dishes lacked acid so it was just salt and meat forward. There are many Vietnamese restaurants in the valley that deliver a much brighter and better balanced product for less money and faster service than we experienced. We really hoped we would like this place as the location is top notch. If they improve we might go back as the concept is attractive.

The wonton soup although small is well worth going out of your way for. I was also helped by Katia who proffensianal and warmhearted with a smile that lights a room! Would like to come back and try the Vietnamese Mint Chicken.

This is no longer the same restaurant - we drove all the way down from Snowbird after making a reservation online. Finding the entrance was impossible (they have 2 entrances that they share with a different restaurant???), and when we finally walked into what seemed like a different restaurant altogether, we were met with a very unfriendly lady who told us that Pho is only served from 1-4 and that the reservation I had made wasn’t valid. If you’re looking for this restaurant, it no longer exists and its replacement is cold and confusing.

Wow. When I saw the word pho, I just was expecting a little strip mall restaurant. When we walked in, we were blown away by the decor. The manager was very kind and helped us get a table. Our waitress was incredibly sweet and very helpful in advising us on what to order.
The best part, was the food and beverages. There wasn’t a single dish we didn’t love. There was even a dumpling appetizer that the sauce was so good. I wouldn’t let them take the dish away so that I could keep putting the sauce from that dish on all the other dishes that came out.
100%. I’m going to come back here next time I’m in town.

REPLY TO OWNER:
You should train your staff, or apologize, rather than finding excuses. She served two tables, and took two groups to tables, so she definitely not the cleaning crew, but probably a host, or a server. A more specific description for you to train your staff: she’s short, dyed yellow hair, with round face, looks around 50. Other waitress was wearing apron, she wasn’t.
I brought mandarin cause I want to borrow the scissors to cut the bag off. She said I cannot bring food, and I explained that I only want to cut the bag. And this happens AFTER she asked me a series of irrelevant questions like the door problem. Still, I brought mandarins should not be the reason of SHE ACTING RUDELY!
OR, if your restaurant have RULES TO FOLLOW to dine in, you should post it on the door, something like “USING THIS DOOR MEANS YOU ARE NOT OUR CUSTOMER”.
Original comment:
A HORRIBLE place. that old short lady is extremely unfriendly! The waitress brought us to a table, and that lady then came several times and asked random questions. She first asked why can we use the door we went in. Why should we know? She works here, not us. She then emphasize that door should be locked, we should not use that door. We are first time here, why should we know??? Then she asked if we want lunch here. If we don’t want lunch, why were we there???? Cause she looked at me in an unfriendly way, the only interpretation of that question is that she wants us to leave. If there is a 0 star, I’ll give a zero. This is the most weird and uncomfortable experience I‘ve ever had. I don’t know which restaurant she works for. I’ll leave this comment for both restaurants.

Update:
They have moved locations across the valley to the Sandy/Cottonwood area. New area is super busy. They only do dine in from like 12-4 jsyk, but they do takeout otherwise. We didn't know any of this so we're a bit thrown off, went to soala instead which I guess shares a kitchen with them?

Pho Thin is in the same building as Saola. I have been going to Pho Thin since they were in SugarHouse. The Pho is THE BEST I have had anywhere. I just wish they were open for in restaurant dining on week nights! (They close early for dine in on week nights, but I believe you can order to go still). Pho Thin is the reason I visit. 100,000% with no exaggeration this is hands down the best Vietnamese food I’ve ever had. The FRAGRANCE and FIERINESS of the lemongrass tofu will shock you. The DEPTH of the spices in the vegan pho will astound you as it soothes you. The freshness and flavor of the vermicelli salad will instantly refresh you. And the perfect combination of lightness and sweetness in the tempura sweet potato fries will simply delight you. When the food arrived at our table, we all stopped talking and didn’t start again until we were full to bursting. The food is that good. I’m sure it kills many conversations. Bonus points to this place for offering a vegetarian sauce that replaces fish sauce for many of the dishes, as well as a super hot and flavorful housemade chili oil that was simply incredible.

We received tepid beef water. Not pho. The beef had been cooked in too much oil two days prior to serving it. I’m reasonably confident the mystery meat portion was store bought hot dogs that were dyed grey with sink water. The taste was actually sickening. We literally threw away the whole dinner and made a frozen pizza instead. Not a fan of wasting food (or money), but this was not food. It was leftover spoiled beef warmed in a bowl of water in the microwave and served with a bunch of Walmart quality off brand noodles. This place was good once upon a time, but they are cutting corners now. There are plenty of good pho places in the area. Skip this one.

First time I had a bug in any restaurant I've been to in Utah.
The Pho was very bland and oily. I ordered a meat combo with tripe, and it was the thinnest slice of tripe i had in my life. They were the length & width of a match.
The bug pictured was in the sake. Either in the bottle or the sake itself. My friend noticed it floating in her cup, i think i drank one.
Super gross. We brought it to the attention to the server, she was pretty unbothered. I was surprised they didn't even offer to take the sake off, it's not about the money, but just a nice gesture when you gross out a customer.

Big fan of the bánh mì! It’s a large portion that comes with a side of sweet potato fries or salad for a reasonable price. The baguette and the meat is so good. My favorite is the grilled pork and the French beef! The phở is delicious and the broth has a very balanced flavor profile. Some places have broth that is too sweet for my taste. But this one is exactly what I look for! I personally do not add any additional sauces because I love the broth on its own. You can taste the beef and it’s really the star of the broth.

I've been to a lot of pho places around slc and this one is probably one of my least favorite. Their food is very expensive and not the best quality. They gave a us a plate of bean sprouts, lemons, and wilted old basil. Why lemons?? The broth is extraordinarily oily. The edemame tasted super plain. I ordered a Thai ice tea and they brought out a glass of it half full. The only good thing is that we had a nice server.

Better than all the rest. It's the broth which they make each batch with 24hr simmer.

The reviews are true . It’s not just that the service is terrible. But they are just plain ol’ rude , I came in with a party of 8. Not everyone had arrived yet, I had to ask for a drink after being ignored for 10 minutes. Then they told us we couldn’t order unless our whole table was there . And said pretty hostile by the server Sam. Who also was pretty unkind to our child when he asked for the WiFi . “ we don’t give that out here” how she said it was snappy and uncalled for . It was clear she was busy and stressed , because why would you snap at a child when asking about the WiFi. A few minutes passed and I wanted to order for the table who was 5 minutes away. Still they demanded no one orders until everyone was there . Left a bad taste in my mouth. And we just left . When you go out you want to be treated kindly and like people are welcoming . Not this place. You are better off ordering to go from here as the other reviews say.

pho thin, is the best restaurant that you can eat at in sugar house, Salt Lake City. It is my sanctuary.. it cures my depression.. makes me forget there is bad in this world… makes me want to be a better person.. if you wanna be a better person eat Pho. Be kind, stay hot.

This is one of the best pho places in the entire valley AND they also have cream cheese wontons which is a must-have for me.

Great local Vietnamese food. The vermicelli and bahn mi are our favorites here.

Been there twice now and enjoyed their Pho Ramen dish with egg. I've had their Pho with brisket prior and it was also very good.
Great service with Cassie!

It is a rip off. I ordered 3 orders of broth and they charged for a full meal for each cup of broth. And in case you were going to ask, all I got was the broth. I might have give bonus points or something if they had given me the full meal but to charge $12 for broth is not worth it.
What is worse is the broth was not that great. It is okay but I have had better.
As for the sandwich, they ignored directions and left stuff on that I asked to be left off.
Even the potstickers were only so so.
I will never go back and I will tell my friends to look elsewhere for good pho.

We love this place. The tofu Bahn Mi is absolutely insane. So unbelievably good. And the pho is delicious, of course. I love the roundeye cut. I love to get the super size with the market vegetables.
The best Vietnamese food in Salt Lake! The only place that comes close is Pho Plus on State St. down in Orem.

I tried the sandwich and potstickers. The sandwich and tempura fried food were all soggy. This is not a place to go for take-out or delivery since the boxes keep in moisture.

Absolutely hit the spot. Prices are typical pho prices.

The Pho there is consistently superior! I sure hope this wonderful little place survives the pandemic!
Whelp, service has gone down hill since a year ago. I asked for a side of steamed broccoli and carrots (like a have many times with no issues) for my son's pho. They brought the standard veggie mix which is mostly cabbage. My son doesn't eat cabbage so it just goes to waste. I reminded the (new) staff member that I just wanted the broccoli and carrots. She said they don't do that. One - they've always done that small request for us in the past, and two - she should have explained that before seemingly accepting my order request without a word. We've been regulars for years. That may be changing. It's hard because the food is just as good as ever, just lowered the bar on service.

The dishes have always been extremely delicious. I tired something other than the Pho which is amazing. The caramelized beef with rice was so good, I couldn't even stop to snap a picture. The beef rice wraps were also done really well, even if I had to assemble them myself, which made for an interesting yet very delicious meal. Fingers were too sticky for a picture. So much food and cooked so well! Definitely worth the wait and the creative way of making my pan food at the table.

Poor service and EXTREMELY overpriced food. They prioritize take out orders over costumers SITTING IN THEIR DINNING ROOM and even when staff pays attention to you end up waiting over and hour for food that is sub-par at best. Definitely not “Famous Vietnamese”. Never eating here again.

This place has quickly became one Of my favorite little secret getaway Asian eateries in the entire valley.
The space is relatively small but comfortable. The menu is varried. While predominantly Vietnamese, there are many Noodle dishes, and a Cross Polinization of some Japanese dishes, as well as Chinese.
The food is always fresh, robust, and brought to the Table in a timely matter.
They also have great Ice tea, and hot Teas available as well as a Beer license, including perverbial favorites such as
Tsing Tao, Kiran, and Sapporo.
Its a great cozy spot , well run , and worth a visit if youve never been. You will not be disappointed

I have Covid and had a friend pick up vegan pho for me. When I went to eat it, it was beef. I called and they acknowledged they gave me the wrong order. I asked for a refund, and they could not give one. They said they would give me a credit for today. I called today as another friend was headed there to pick me up some food, and they had no record of the credit. The manager was extremely rude and told me if I wanted food I’d have to pay, otherwise maybe tomorrow she could confirm I was owed a credit. I told her I could tell her when my last order was and she said if I didn’t have the name of the person she couldn’t do anything. I will never go back after years of giving them my business.

33.71 for a bahn mi and pho. ZERO handicap parking, and stairs to get up. If you have mobility problems avoid this place. Also avoid if you don’t want a 16.00 pho or bahn mi sand which.

This is the best Asian food in Sugarhouse by far. And certainly the best Vietnamese food. The Pho is great, but the other dishes are really good too. Noodle salad is delicious. Staff is always very friendly too. The adjacent restaurants have all come and gone, changed ownership many times, etc. But Pho Thin has been here for a long time. Truly a Sugarhouse staple.

Terrible experience! We went out for my birthday dinner. When we arrived there was only one other couple halfway through their meal there. Even with an almost empty dining room, it was 10 minutes before our server greeted us and took drink orders. 10 minutes later we got the drinks and ordered food. We were there almost an hour, 55 minutes, before food was served. I was told they forgot to put in my order so I still didn’t have food. I told them to cancel it and she acted irritated. Later I saw her arguing with the cook about cancelling. Very unprofessional. The food that did come out had black wilted basil leaves and dirty spoons. I had to share my daughter’s pho and didn’t like it. It was the most expensive, poor food and service experience I’ve had in years! I DO NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I feel like calling your own restaurant famous sets you up for failure. The food isn’t bad, but it’s not necessarily good. Unfortunately the food becomes bad the moment you realize that your busying a substandard banh mi for nearly twice the price of any other place in SLC.
I can’t in good conscience recommend eating here.

Eat here quite often. Consistently great food and friendly service. I have never been disappointed and always very satisfied with all menu items, though the french butter steak Ba Mi is my current favorite. Their Pho, noodle and rice dishes are awesome as well. Check it out if you like legit good Asian food.

Coming from a wide variety of pho places in NYC, I was pleasantly surprised to find such a great place for pho in SLC. High quality meat in a very flavorful broth with perfectly cooked pho really hit the spot after a long flight! Highly recommended!

Wow! I had the tofu spring rolls and vegan pho with tofu; both were amazing! The vegan pho had soooo much flavor, which is truly difficult to find. In addition, the spring rolls were fresh and tasty. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a VERY tasty vegan meal.

Great vegan/vegetarian options! We ordered the fried vegetable dumplings, the vegan pho, and the tofu banh mi. All delicious. We were especially impressed with the dumplings and banh mi. We stopped eating meat a few years ago and the way they season the tofu reminds me of hibachi style chicken. Excellent flavor and unlike any tofu banh mi we've had before. Excited to come back here!

This WAS my favorite place for pho. Tonight I ordered to go and was given a vegan pho with rotten vegetables. Took a bite and spit it back out. Called for refund. Was told the item had to be brought back to the restaurant UNOPENED to get a refund.
Old review: My favorite place for Pho! Both the filet and vegan pho are delicious. Best around! Friendly staff.

We had dinner there two days ago for my Mom's birthday and the place was terrible. Food was mediocre at best. Not clean at all with dust everywhere and tables that were just quickly wiped. The men's bathroom toilet doesn't flush. And most of all the Bahn Mi sandwich made me and my Mom sick.

Really disappointed. Was excited to check this place out as it’s right near my apartment. Found a live COCKROACH in the veggies that were served with the pho. Even more bummed that the entire check was not comped as we did not finish our food for obvious reasons. Goes without saying that we will not be returning.
