Our recent visit to Nineteen Hyaku at the Pearl for a birthday celebration was nothing short of extraordinary! The online reservation process was a breeze, and from the moment we walked in, servers Jac and Isaac made us feel completely welcomed, like long-lost friends reconnecting over incredible food.

We kicked off with perfectly steamed edamame before diving into the Shumai Dumplings — tender pork-filled delights swimming in a sauce so rich and flavorful it could have been a dish on its own. The chicken and pork skewers followed, delivering a sophisticated blend of smoky, savory perfection that left us speechless.

The fried rice? Simply out of this world! It’s now a must-have for my takeout dinner menu at home. The Lemon Kani Sushi? Imagine a lemon drop candy reimagined as sushi — a playful explosion of flavor that’s both unique and unforgettable.

Our grand finale was the New Zealand lamb chops, a true culinary masterpiece, made even better by the expert recommendations from the knowledgeable staff. We capped off the evening with the Hyaku Espresso Martini and Lychee Martini for dessert, a deliciously creative conclusion to a phenomenal experience.

Nineteen Haiku isn’t just a meal — it’s an adventure for the senses!

The food was borderline mediocre for the exuberant cost of it all and our server with the blonde Mohawk made our visit very subpar with him refusing to serve us drinks from the happy hour menu until it had already past with his excuse being that we had to go to the bar but once we did go to the bar they sent us back our server.

I love to go to all the sushi restaurants in town. They have great food however i just stopped here tonight and was treated rudely by the bar staff. Me and my family stepped in to have a drink at the bar and they were so rude. Also one of the listed items on the drink menu was falsely advertised. So all in all would not stop byin this restaurant ever again. The prices were also notably over priced for the service you get. The place is beautiful inside however.

Drinks and food were great except for the miso soup which was just average. Ambiance was great. The service was slow and our waitress was cold and standoffish. It took 20+ minutes to get our dessert which was a basic wonton pastry with ice cream. With warmer, more attentive service, this place could be 5 stars.

Update: 12/2024.

Time hasn't improved this product.

The kitchen is still WILDLY uneven. There's very little authentic Japanese food or Asian technique being featured here. It's just flash for the sake of flash with no real understanding of the aesthetic or culture.

Lots of empty tables the night I went back. I fear some of that has.to do with the recent harassment allegations made against the owner by current and former staff members.

As I said when I first dined here, it's a design forward eating space (for San Antonio, at least) and the rest of the experience just falls apart. I'm not a kid who's impressed with a 'vibe' over a genuinely good kitchen and trained servers. Nineteen Hyaku should really take the time to explore why they opened and who their target audience is.

Honestly, if they were wanting longevity, they would bring in a more capable kitchen team and (somewhat) copy the menu from Nobu as best they could.

That would at least feel somewhat Japanese.

----------------------------------------------------
Opening month shakedown is in process, so it's to be expected that things aren't going to be super smooth. Once they have the menu down and have been serving a couple of months, I'll go back and see how things have settled in.

For now, it's an extremely symmetrical dining room, but not something that's besting design restaurants in Dallas or Houston, and a vaguely Asian menu that takes *zero* risk. I would have expected the ever-present, Nobu-inspired Miso Black Cod, but even that is left off the menu here. It honestly would have helped.

The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable. You have a massive opportunity to explore higher-end Japanese cuisine and this was what they came up with. It felt like the design of the dining room was more important than what comes out of the kitchen.... Basically, an eatery opened to take advantage of people posting to their social media feeds.

Form over function rarely works for long.

The prices are surprisingly low. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. Time will tell.

I hope as they find their customer base, they also find a greater identity in true Japanese/Asian cuisine.

Way overpriced and absolutely no flavor. Save your money and find a local spot for better sushi. Service was sub par, I've had better service at Golden Wok. Osaka on Broadway gives a great show, great service, and way better sushi for half the price.

We tried this restaurant for my birthday last night and while I was really looking forward to it, it fell short of my expectations. I love omakase and I’ve had it at Uchi and Nobu so my expectations were high. I’ve had sashimi and nigiri from Up Scale, their sister restaurant as well, so I was expecting more. The flavors of the fish were fine, but nothing was outstanding. I also had a few bites that I was gagging as I forced myself to eat. One being the tomago, an egg omelette. Another was a sushi roll that had slices of white onion in the middle. I was able to pick that out, thankfully. The other one that was just awful was the scallop atop the rice. The pork belly skewers were delicious as many have pointed out. The lychee mojito was refreshing and a great recommendation from our lovely waitress. Speaking of, she was very attentive and dishes came out quickly. The service was excellent. All in all, I don’t think I’ll go back unless I hear of a menu revamp.

I worked for this company for two years, great service staff and cooks, and amazing foods! But the management and ownership is outright awful. From not caring for their employees, to enabling bad employees and firing people for standing up to themselves or for wanting to have time outside of work to spend time w their lives ones.

It's sad, it'd normally say can't wait to come back and eat! But I don't know if I can ever give Houston a penny to his company.

Disappointing Omakase Experience for $400

I recently visited this restaurant claiming to offer a Japanese omakase experience, but the meal was a letdown and did not justify the hefty $400 price tag. The dinner began oddly with a creamy potato leek soup, followed by a fish dish and a pasta course, deviating from traditional omakase expectations. The dessert of panna cotta further disrupted the palate.

The wine pairing—three identical pours—was a puzzling choice that failed to complement the diverse dishes served. For an experience PRICED comparably to top-tier dining in New York or Los Angeles, the menu lacked cohesion was extremely underwhelming.

Overall, this was a disappointing dining experience that missed the mark both in culinary execution and value.

Service was less than desirable, there were multiple instances where the waitress had asked whether or not we had received our orders. Massive disconnect between wait staff and kitchen. Disappointing. Overall great food, had a lot of fun; but this is not an omakase restaurant. The sushi bar, where we sat, was not at all the experience that we had imagined. There was minimal table space and felt congested.
Moreover, we were unable to watch our meal being prepared as we had hoped (and as expected from any high end sushi restaurant). Had high hopes and if we were to go back would probably sit at the actual bar, as it seemed it had the best service and ambiance.

Im frustrated. We had a good night there - came for a date night which was fun. The food was tasty (a bit expensive for what it was but still a fun night out). It was extremely difficult to find parking so we thought it would be convenient to valet and we are paying for it now. When we came back for our keys at 11:40 (the restaurant is open til 11 so we didn’t think that was too unreasonable a time to return to grab our keys and head home) there was no one to be found and my car has been held hostage for nearly 24 hrs. Now it’s 24 hrs later and they don’t know where my keys are (they literally told me they didn’t know where they were) and I have no way of retrieving my car so the “convenience” of valet has now become a migraine and huge annoyance. Beyond frustrated.

Also just as a disclaimer nothing was said to us about when we needed to pick up our car when we dropped it off, there is no mention of times on the valet ticket, and the emergency number we called that was on the ticket told us we could pick it up by 11 the next morning when we realized we wouldn’t be able to drive home like we planned. When we showed up at 11am the next day there was no one to be found so we had to go back AGAIN at 3:45 when they said it would be available. At 3:45 I waited in the restaurant while they looked in the back room for my keys for over 30 minutes. So not only was there annoyance over not being able to get my keys for 24hrs but I also got had to pay for several additional taxi rides that I didn’t expect to need.

Nineteen Hyaku is the hottest new culinary sensation in San Antonio, rivaling the sushi scenes of New York and Miami. But it's not just about the raw fish here - the hot dishes are equally divine:

1. Spring Gyoza: Delicate dumplings bursting with seasonal flavors.

2. Shrimp Tempura: Perfectly crisp, light-as-air battered shrimp.

3. Chicken Karaage: Japanese-style fried chicken that's juicy and addictive.

4. Chicken Tsukune: Savory chicken meatballs, grilled to perfection.

5. TX Wagyu Skewer: Melt-in-your-mouth local beef that's pure luxury.

Don't miss the Agave Bloom cocktail - it's hands down one of the best mezcal drinks I've ever tasted. Nineteen Hyaku isn't just a meal, it's an experience that's putting San Antonio on the culinary map!

This is not a place for traditional sushi. As others mentioned, they are more unique rolls but not worth the price in my opinion. The atmosphere is cool and it’s a nice place to hang out and have drinks.

Our service started off well even though the food isn’t spectacular, but our server forgot about our shellfish allergy. We let her know at the beginning but she didn’t realize shellfish included shrimp which was part of the moriwase dish. She brought the dish out and presented it to us at which point we realized it included shrimp. I wish she would’ve apologized or realized that’s a mistake that could really hurt someone who may have a more severe allergy. She seemed more annoyed than anything.

The food came out pretty quickly except for the moriwase (we ordered everything at once). We had finished all our food and waited probably 30 minutes before the moriwase came out.

My husband and I decided to do the omakase experience for Valentine’s Day after being happy with our first dining experience in November. I read many online reviews, and was expecting ~18 or so courses for $90 per person. When we arrived, it seemed as though the price increased to $150 per person and was now only 12 courses. Not a problem, we are accustomed to paying for good food along with the experience. This was not my first omakase experience, and I was excited to introduce it to my husband. I set my expectations with him based on my experiences in NYC, Seattle, and San Francisco…I explained it would be several courses chosen by the chef with a mixture of cold and hot dishes, and would span a couple of hours typically. Our reservation was for 6:30 PM, and we were seated at the sushi bar promptly. Our server came by and introduced herself, we explained we were interested in doing the omakase experience. We asked about the sake pairing, she didn’t know how it worked so had to go ask at the bar. She came back and explained it, and said one of them was specifically for the nigiri portion of the omakase… which implies there is more than just nigiri (as I would have expected). Our experience started at about 7:10, when we were given the ginger plate and hot towel. According to the pictures I took on my phone, our first actual dish was served at 7:10 and our last at 7:38. A whopping 28 minutes for a $300 + $50 sake omakase experience, and to top it all off only included nigiri. To say the look on my husbands face was underwhelming would be an understatement. I took a picture of him looking at the menu at 7:44 because he was still clearly hungry. Our final bill was $490 + tip…. and I still can’t get over how disappointed we both were. The nigiri was mostly good, fish was fresh, but not worth the price point in my opinion. After this experience, I unfortunately would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, and do not plan on returning. I hope in the future management focuses on knowledgeable service, and more importantly the pace and value of the omakase experience.

Stick to Uchi, Sushihana, or Shiro!

I must admit, this place surprised me! I expected it to be very showy with that sushi taking backseat - I couldn't have been more wrong! This place has phenomenal sushi, a superb cocktail menu, exquisite ambiance and top notch customer service. That makes this place almost unparalleled in San Antonio. 10 out of 10 would recommend!!!

A note on the sushi - it's not basic standard average fish fare, it's an exceptionally well curated list of the best authentic Japanese food available stateside plus a few fun options to explore and develop your palette. And it's easily accessible for both foodies and novices. I really liked that they did the various cuts of tuna for restaurant week- a most educational and tasty meal that's hard to come by.

My only complaint is that I urgently feel like I need to return to try the waygu steak since Houston (the owner) said it's simply the best. And that's why I like this place - it's possible to explore and discover a heck of a lot more than just raw fish here. The carpenter group has done wonderful things to elevate the San Antonio dining scene and I love them for that- we all win in the end :)

We had a delightful dinner. The three of us shared various dishes, rolls, and all 3 deserts. Our tab with no alcohol was $267 plus tip. Nothing we had blew us away. This may be because we just returned from NYC where we had the most amazing Omakase experience at Sushi Blossoms. 1900 is good but not great and came no where near the food quality of our dining at Sushi Blossoms.
Two things irked me about 1900. One being the bathrooms. The Carpenters have the same bathroom theme here and at UpScale. Which is an all black, low light bathroom. I find this portrays an attempt to hide sanitation flaws and shows of being unkept. Bathrooms should be bright and white ish. The other issue was our servers lack of attentiveness. Our tea and water were dry often. And when I asked for coffee, her snobbish reply was, “coffee isn’t very Japanese”. LMAO. Well then neither are 7 Hispanic sushi preparers! FYI, they drink a lot of coffee in Japan.

Wow what a fall from grace. My wife and I had omakase here in December and it was amazing. $90 each for a 10 course meal. Today we ordered omakase and it came on a tray. $130 for 12 pieces of sushi that were slightly above average but nothing earth shattering like last time. Talking with the staff, it seems like once this place hit the papers and got more hype, things went downhill to the point where they charge more for way less. If you want the a slightly upscale restaurant ambiance but want less food for okay taste for a high price premium this is your spot. Otherwise steer clear.

On the first visit, I ordered Omakase. The sushi and sashimi were nothing special - yellowtail, salmon, even avocado. Not what I expect from a chef showing his/her best fish.

My fourth visit showed a marked improvement with interesting Uni and Kobe dishes finding their way to the menu. But some misses, such as lukewarm miso soup.

Go for the beautiful atmosphere. The food is improving and I hope it continues.

The atmosphere and decor is beautiful. The place is spacious, and with having a full house, it didn't feel too crowded either.

We came for Restaurant Week to try their menu. It was delicious. I was hesitant with the miso soup because it had a dash of truffle oil, but it worked! I was pleasantly surprised how the flavors compliment each other. The 2nd course was delicious as well with 3 different nigiri. The wagyu skewer was my favorite. It was glazed with garlic hot honey---delicious. The chrysanthemum honey ice cream was a wonderful ending---refreshing, palate cleanser.

We ordered from their regular menu as well. The eggplant is a must. I always go for chicken karaage, but this had a different taste, almost a sweet/tangy---it was delicious!

Unagi is my usual go-to for sushi, but unfortunately I was not impressed. It was too tough and rubbery. Hopefully it was a bad batch, because everything else was delicious.

I recently celebrated my birthday at Nineteen Hyaku with a group of friends. While the restaurant shows promise, my overall experience was a bit mixed. San Antonio was definitely in need of a new sushi spot, and this restaurant seemed like a promising addition. However, the experience fell short especially in terms of service. We had a table upstairs for 12 people and unfortunately the service was not up to the mark. The food took an unusually long time to arrive, and our server wasn't around often enough for us to order drinks promptly. One of the significant drawbacks was the quality of the food compared to the prices. I found the rolls to be subpar, and at $7 per piece of Nigiri I expected a higher standard (our bill was $2000 at the end of the night) Having dined at places like Uchi and Uchiko, where the quality matches the cost, Nineteen Hyaku left me wanting more in terms of the culinary experience. This place leans more towards providing a trendy vibe than focusing on the food itself. If you're looking for a place that offers a great backdrop for photos and serves as an Instagram-worthy spot this might meet those expectations. However, if you're seeking an exceptional dining experience, especially with a larger group, I would hesitate to recommend making a reservation for a table. My overall impression is that you're paying for the aesthetics and ambiance rather than the food. It might be worth a visit for the photo op or quick date night spot, but I wouldn't recommend it for those prioritizing a top-notch sushi dining experience.

The dining experience at the restaurant was generally very pleasing, especially with the enticing omakase choices from the raw bar. However, a few kitchen dishes had minor issues like the A5 waygu being served cold when it had supposedly just came off the grill, same goes for the fried lobster and scallop. The entire omakase was comprised 19 dishes, with half originating from the sushi bar and the remaining half from the kitchen. Additionally, it's noteworthy that the entire omakase experience lasted approximately 3 hours and was $150 plus $50 for the sake pairing.

The moment I walked into the restaurant all the way till I left. I was greeted and bid goodnight. Shown to my table. (I had a reservation) My server Lily was professional, courteous and attentive as well as the other servers that assist. My food… well Lily gave me some recommendations and they were excellent and delicious recommendations. I had the Lemon Kani, Temaki Chasu, and Shrimp Tempura. My drink I order a signature cocktail the Hyaku Espresso Martini. (Loved my Martini…It was delicious)and a Lemon Ginger tea.
For Dessert the vanilla white chocolate ice cream with shaved ice. All the servings are well portioned. Ambiance is beautiful and tasteful. Will I come back…. Definitely. Thank you to all the hard working team at Nineteen Hyaku who made my experience a 10

Great sushi for a date night! It was a good dinner, and service was amazing. The atmosphere was very minimalist, and we loved their playlist. As more folks were dining upstairs, it did get noisy, but we loved it very much! We ordered the Chef’s premium choice at MKT, and it was very good. Toro Nigiri and A5 Wagyu were phenomenal.

Lemon Kani roll, fresh & marvellous; Duck Karage was good (mayonnaise & lime made a good sauce!); tempura shrimp excellent; fried rice with duck was ok, too salty (maybe soy sauce inxs); Matcha tiramisu dessert was too hard & dry, like been in the fridge more than two days. Service needs better coordination (20 min wait for a roll).

Come for the atmosphere and drinks. Our server was really great.

I think I set the bar too high on this one.

The food was forgettable to say the least. Everything just tasted bland. One of the rolls was soo spicy, I think it was the Wagyu roll. It was just too spicy, there’s no way to enjoy it when it’s burning all your taste buds. Skip the miso and edamame. The nigiri was just okay, we’ve had far fresher tasting varieties in town.

The price and quality of the dishes didn’t match up at all.

My friends still talk about how disappointed we were about this place(that I chose). Maybe we’ll try again in a couple months.

This place is so loud you can't hear much...building has an echo. I do not recommend for a romantic, quiet dinner date. I could barley hear the waitress and could not have a conversation. Ate as fast as we could and left to get out of the noise. Sushi was okay and paid almost $30 for a margarita.

We felt like having Japanese for dinner tonight. Houston helped us with our reservations, and we were set.

Valet parking is available, but we found street parking with no problem. Chelsea was our wonderful and knowledgeable server. Found out later that she's the first employee. Dad had a Lemonade, I had the Lychee Mojito, and hubby had tea. Dad and hubby each had the Miso Soup. We had the Shrimp Tempura, Chasu skewer, Tako/octopus skewer, Wagyu Hot Stone, Oysters, Budo Hiramasa, Uni, and Hiramasa (a type of yellowtail). Chasu and wagyu were melt in your mouth good! Oysters done well. We had a couple of treats like the Squash Tempura and Brussel Sprouts. Calamansi pie was the best sweet ending! Coming from the Philippines, calamansi is a lemon-lime fruit! Their pastry chef came from Signature!

If you're looking for a fine dining experience, this is the place to check out!

Our wait staff was very friendly and had great service, we had octopus and chasu skewers, they are good but we didn’t feel really like they were worth it for the money we spent. The octopus one though does look very nice on the plate.

In terms of the rolls, I think the stand outs were the Tuna Tempora and the Little Em’s Kaki. Very buttery and rich rolls that did taste great.

I wouldn’t go back often, but maybe once in a while if I wanted a nice looking restaurant.

We went for our wedding anniversary and the ambience and atmosphere were phenomenal. Food was not good at all. We had the wagyu roll which was so spicy which burned your tastebuds off. I love spicy but if I can eat Chile de arborl all the time which shows my spicy tolerance. Albacore roll was over powered by so much lemon you could not taste anything but lemon. I had to eat my tempura asparagus with it to cut the acidity from the lemon. spiny lobster skewer was covered in some sort of herbs that would get stuck in your teeth no my fav. Shrimp tempura was so soggy & had no crunch also under cooked. Veggi tempura was good minus the dipping sauce which was nothing but lemon again. I would recommend going for a drink or night cap avoid the food as much as possible. The drinks we had were the cherry blossom sprits and the government hill I recommend those. Staff was very nice and fast.

Ordered the omakase. The raw portion (oysters, sushi) were amazing. One gentleman who dropped off the dishes was very great- explaining each piece of the dish, but the female dropping off food did not explain what anything was. The gentleman noticed and came over to explain what the dishes were. The pork belly was a little fatty, and I was not a fan of the dessert. First visit last night. The restaurant is beautiful! Contemporary & elegant, yet still feels comfortable and inviting. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable & helpful.

We shared 3 different rolls and grilled octopus. All were delicious. I wish I knew which ones they were! We went with the recommendation from our server. Ordered a second octopus- so yummy.

The Government Hill cocktail was very good. And I thought the prices were reasonable. Our price per person shows a little high because we enjoyed cocktails!

Only downside was that it’s pretty loud in there. Just know that going in. I also had some trouble reading the menu at the table. We were upstairs, and once the lights dimmed, I could not read the menu (yeah, I’m of that age😂).

Even with these 2 things, I still give it 5 stars for all the goodness. One of the owners, Emily, even saved my sunglasses. I left them behind & she hustled them to me before we got out the door. Thank you!

I cannot wait to go sit at the sushi bar & try more things! Next time I’ll be sure to bring my phone for photos.

I get that they are new and still working through the kinks…but their menu still needs TONS of improving before it can be a top sushi place in San Antonio. It needs even MORE improving before it can even be compared to places such as Uchi or Nobu, which it feels like it is trying so hard to do. I tried the Okasame - or the 11 course chef selection which was $90 per/person. I’ll first say that I had nothing in this course that impressed me. Everything felt very, very mediocre - and none of it tasted particularly fresh. The oysters tasted dirty, and the rolls left something to be desired. They put bacon bits on salmon, which felt confusing, and Tabasco sauce on sushi roll - which also just made me question “why”? Everything here felt like they restaurant was trying so hard, and they missed the mark because of it. The biggest failure in my opinion was the dessert. I’m just going to attach a picture to speak for itself. Whoever thought to put shaved ice, apple slices, creamed milk and vanilla ice cream all together should just stop - because once you mix it altogether like they tell you to, it turns to watery mush. It all just was NOT good. Go to Sushi Zushi and you’ll get better Sushi…go to HEB and you’ll get better sushi, literally go anywhere else and you’ll get better sushi.

Beautiful design, atmosphere (needs better acoustic- you can’t have a conversation at a table of 4). THE FOOD IS TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. Tuna Tempura- below par tasteless tuna deep fried-plated on fryer oil. Serrano salmon roll-again fish quality was below par only stand out flavor was the serrano pepper and chili crisp placed on top of roll. Miso soup - water with smoked flavor cheap tofu and seaweed. Spiny lobster served in its shell with a skewer run thru it -it was so tough we couldn’t pull it out of its shell- went to waste. Fried rice was basically “mush” more of an over cooked paella than a fried rice- texture was horrible. TX Waygu 6 slices took forever to get food and cooked beyond well done went to waste. Don’t ever mind paying for good food however price is an issue in the absence of value. Skip the food, enjoy the atmosphere and have a drink at the bar.

We were sat on time and and ordered the Miso Soup to start. We loved the smoky/salty flavor and the red color. We also ordered the Yuki Salmon and the Ebi Toreado rolls. The Yuki Salmon was absolutely delicious and shot up the list of my wifes top favorite rolls. The Ebi Toreado was okay, but wasn't very special in my book. To drink we orderded the Rosé and the Prosecco. To be honest, the portion was really skimpy for the price. We looked around and noticed most of the cocktails looked skimpy. We also ordered the Beer/Sake shot combo which was really delicious. Overall the whole experience was good and the staff was very nice and attentive. We'll definitely be back.
