Hamaru Ramen and Handroll

This place is my new favorite place in Killeen, Texas. Food was delicious and we had outstanding service. Some of the food dishes were enough for two people to eat which is perfect if you like to try multiple things and share. This place is truly amazing for the area and location. I really enjoyed how they had a variety of foods from sushi to soups. This is a must try if you're ever in this area. The only downfall I would say is seating. But they do have single seating bar type eating areas.

I’ve lived in Japan for 6 and half years, so it’s always hard finding good Japanese food. When I say that this place brought me back as a kid, this was absolutely delicious and it felt like home and comfort food to me! I’m very picking about Japanese restaurants and I’m just saying this place was worth it to me!

The price point wasn’t bad at all, for 3 of us: my mom, my husband and I. The quality of the food was hot and served well! Customer service was great, everyone was so nice and patient.

My family and I have already been twice and we’re planning going back again soon! 🌟

I had the chicken yakitori and fried rice and it was delicious. Everything was super fresh. This was some of the best fried rice I’ve had in the area… it definitely tasted like it was made to order, unlike some places where you can tell they have a large batch premade and waiting. The chicken yakitori was also quite tasty.

The portion on the fried rice is not very big- it was enough food for me (though I also had a chicken appetizer), but probably wouldn’t be enough for a man or teenage with an appetite. If you like big portions, order the fried rice with another selection.

All in all I was very happy with the meal, so highly recommend!

Overall my experience has been really bad. The pork is the thinnest cut of meat you can imagine, think lunch meat thin and the service is abysmal. The waiter didn't know what food was made in house and they didn't make the appetizer until after the food came out.

The ramen was pretty mid and didn't taste like it was made in house, like the broth tasted like it came from a box.

Overall I won't be coming back.

Honestly the most authentic ramen shop in town! I've been wanting a restaurant that served authentic ramen here in Killeen for years, so when I heard Hamaru would be opening up this year I was excited!

I went during their soft opening and was met with friendly faces, good service and even better food! My favorite ramen is Tonkatsu and it did not disappoint. I also had the gyoza which was so plump and juicy from the filling. Safe to say I was full and more than satisfied by the end. I've been back a couple times since then and haven't ever had a bad experience.

If you want authentic ramen, a cozy environment and maybe a drink or two, I highly recommend Hamaru Ramen!

Killeen folks are easily impressed. Peculiar little restaurant with a lot of potential.

Server took 20 minutes to come to the table - which was strange because it wasn’t that busy. The ramen was alright. The miso spicy & garlic wasn’t spicy at all and I’m not even a spicy person. My handroll seemed old or something it was weird, it tasted ok I guess. I’ve never really had a handroll I didn’t like until today.

Shrimp tempura was pretty good.

Another 20 minutes to get the check after you’re done. It was odd honestly, the place isn’t very big at all. But I know it’s a new spot.

4 stars for trying in an area that really needs business owners to try. With a couple of minor improvements you could be great.

Suggestions:
- Just take some tips from other ramen restaurants
- add a flavor bomb for an additional charge
- Hire a new waitress
- The wasabi and ginger didn’t even taste like wasabi and ginger. Which is weird because wasabi and ginger are the strongest components. Young ginger is usually pink and mild while older ginger is usually white and stronger.

They charge $14 for fried rice without any chicken even in it. The portion is wildly small for $14 rice. It should be more about $8 for this portion.

Went to Hamura for my 82nd birthday. It was my first time there. All I can say is wow, everything was so fantastic. I enjoyed everything about the place, the food, atmosphere and service. This will now be my go to restaurant for my ramen and rolls. Strongly recommend you make this your go to place also.

I've been here 2 times with a month apart. The food is good but not great. I think japan itself spoiled me on bomb ramen. But if austin and the temple can do it, this place can. But it is bland imo. Another big thing both times I've been is the slow service, 20 min to get your drinks, and the servers dissappear a lot. There could be 2 groups, and it seems they are too busy to check on you. The 1st time I came, me and my sister and I believed they had just completely forgotten our order. Took over an hr for ramen. I'm not kidding. We checked out the clock. People who came in afterward got food faster, bigger groups.

Been to Hamaru Ramen a few times already & each time the food was great! Best Ramen in Killeen. I would drive to a different city just for good ramen prior to their opening now I no longer have to leave town! They are open later in the evening, which is great for a late dinner meal!

If this restaurant was in Japan, I would judge it much harder. I have spent the last 25 years in Japan.

I had the Yuzu special cocktail. It was very good. 5☆
The spicy edamame was over spicied in a miso Gochujang chili rub. The taste of the spice is good, but it totally hides the edamame flavor. 3☆
Unagi don was my main. The eel was good, on par, with anything you might find in a grocery store in Japan. The rice...not so much. Japanese rice should stick, and the grains seemed small compared to the rice I normally eat in Japan. 4☆

There was an offer to get a free drink for posting a review. Which I didn't partake in. This may affect the amount of reviews this place has.

This part I am writing from my hotel, the staff was very attentive...maybe too much so. As I was writing this review and getting my ideas together, one of the waitresses came over and asked if I needed anything else. I told her no I would finish my drink and then leave. She put a little book with my total on the counter and then not even a minute later another girl came by with a credit card scanner. I felt like I was being rushed out of the place.

Overall, it's solid 4☆ I would come again.

So I walked in waited 10 minutes while being ignored. Never even got a chance to try it. Customer service is pretty bad. I stood there and an employee basically moved me out of the way without saying excuse me. The way I look at it if you can be rude to a new customer before even acknowledging them you won't last for too long. Based on this experience I wouldn't come back.

This is our 2nd time being at this place. Definitely such a vibe with the music, the scenery, and atmosphere. Let alone the food. The food brought out leaves you in "AWE" with its amazing presentation. Cooked to perfection in a timely manner, you just can't beat it. My boyfriend and I were super excited to find this new restaurant. The decor and vibe of the place is super nice and clean. The food was okay.. we both got ramen and some parts of it were cold like the meat and eggs (super weird because the broth was super hot). If you are going to eat in please be aware that the wait is crazy. We waited a whole hour for our food while everyone else was getting their food. We felt like we were forgotten and nobody checked up on us. Which is crazy because there were only two other tables with people. Took forever for us to get our menus as well and for them to even take our order. We were there for almost two hours and the majority of the time was waiting for something. They gave us the check in the middle of us eating without asking if we wanted anything else (we were planning on getting dessert too :(((() Overall, food was decent but the staff/customer service needs major help.

The atmosphere was crisp and clear with warm notes of dark wood and vibrant decor. Korean dance music filled the room, and the air was clean. Our waitress came forward to serve with a smile and gracious attitude. Ordered: seaweed salad, potato korokke, karaage bowl, shrimp tempura roll (with complimentary miso soup), Tonkotsu ramen x2 spicy garlic and customized ingredients, sweet black tea, and yuzu lemonade. Seaweed salad was served on a bed of the crispest and freshest salad mix I’ve ever had, which was drizzled with a ginger dressing. Loved it. Might recommend specifying if you desire only seaweed salad by itself, as the ginger dressing will change the taste of nutty sesame you might be used to. Potato korokke was two cakes cut in half, perfectly crunchy outside, soft as a cloud within, tasty sauce, loved it. Karaage bowl perfectly crisp chicken meat, mostly thighs I believe, hot, fresh, atop fresh cabbage mix and seasoned rice, drizzled all over with yummy sauce, loved it. Shrimp tempura was as expected, straightforward tasty roll with perfectly ripe avocado, loved it. Miso soup was delicate and tasty, on par with fine establishments’ versions, loved it. Yuzu lemonade loved it! Just perfect guys, please be aware there are pieces of softened lemon rind that are palate cleansing and delicious to eat. Sweet tea was black tea, sweetened, with earthy tones and depth of flavor. Tonkatsu ramen, loved it, there isn’t much to say about it but “mmmmmmmm”. Rich, creamy broth, Al dente perfect noodles, best Ajitsuke Tamago (marinated egg) I’ve had at ANY ramen shop, fresh add ins. Added spice, which was somewhat heavy on chili seeds unfortunately. Pork was good, though very faint taste of refrigeration, and just a bit thin. Worth the trip, hands down the best ramen within forty miles. In general, now one of my top three restaurants within forty miles as well. Satisfied, warm, happy. Thank you all.

The first time there I ordered chicken ramen with an additional $2 for spicy and garlic. I didn't get the spicy add on and when I asked if the spicy add on was added the male waiter said yes. It wasnt, and I was charged. Even without the spicy add on the ramen was the BEST I've had in the area. So I went back and ordered the same dish (spicy add on) and this time it was spicy and had extra garlic. Top notch! Would recommend!

Only suggestion is make sure if you have add ons that you recieve them because you will be charged.

Miso Ramen with an extra egg - The broth was incredible! Eggs were perfectly marinated & jammy

We ate everything up within minutes and had just enough room left for the cheesecake and that definitely didn’t disappoint.

Good fresh food, good presentation. Will definitely return. The tako wasabi was good, the unagi was great. Ate every bit. Wish they had more low carb choices on the menu, like sashimi. My lunch mate got the octopus balls and liked them a lot. My other lunch mate got the shrimp tempura and thought they had too much breading.

I love this restaurant. Server was AMAZING and so helpful. We got the ramen and fried rice for my three year old. He ate 3/4 of his plate and also some of my ramen. I tried his fried rice and have to say that is the best I have ever had! This will be our new go to for dinner out. Will definitely be coming back and recommending to family and friends.

I enjoyed a bowl of ramen for dinner. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about their menu items. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. Prices are pretty average for ramen in Central Texas. I will be back to try the rice bowls and hand rolls. The atmosphere is relaxing and inviting.

I've gone too this place two different times. Both have not been well, the first time was during the grand opening and I was willing too give it another chance because it was the grand opening.

My first time; there was multiple mix ups with the orders, miscommunications, and overall no service, explanations of the food, introductions, anything.

My second time was today, it was lacking in the same ways. But the experience was somehow worse. Firstly, they are extremely stingy, there are no refills, no free sides, no free miso soup or salad. Along with that it was very very overpriced. For example their miso soup is I believe 2-3$ for the small cup. Miso soup isn't costly too make, I've made it multiple times. The takoyaki is not good, there isn't any chunks of squid and it's not golden crunchy. Just a mushy ball. The karaage bowl is decent and the sushi. I also had a small mix up with our waitress when I asked for an extra side of sauce. The food came and there was no sauce on the food and only on the side, I wanted sauce still on the food. But this wasn't a big deal at all I just asked for sauce on the bowl. I did also ask for another side of sauce though as the amount they gave me in the side dish wasn't that much at all. We then proceeded too listen to the owner yell at the waitress, raise his voice, and an argument happening over the simple request. It was embarrassing for me as I'm not a very social person and I don't like to cause issues or be the reason for issues. They continued too argue till a family member stepped in and asked why it was such an issue? In which the female owner (I'm assuming) said they were joking, when the waitress was clearly upset at the situation. I would feel bad and embarrassed if I was her too as it's terrible to be berated infront of your customer and very loudly at that.

In total our check was around 85$ which was not at all worth it. We will not be coming again. I don't suggest you go here either. I refuse too support businesses that treat their workers poorly and lack empathy and communication.

And too the waitress if you read this (or anybody looking too work here) I promise there are better places out there.

I'm not butt hurt over not being hired I don't want too be there after seeing this. And no, time was not taken too explain any of food, most of our time was correcting orders. But that was the first time, I didn't expect much as it's the grand opening and their just starting up.
This visit all 3 of the guests at my table (including me) heard them yelling in back and the sauce. And with the miso soup. You have too buy a roll for each person at the table. (We were told this.) In order to get miso soup. The miso soup on its own is 3-4$. No refills on anything on the menu. I know there wasn't a charge that because we bought rolls. 🙂

We were met with smiles and a beautiful atmosphere. Very welcoming. Our sever was very knowledgeable and able to make suggestions of the dishes as well as how to accommodate my food allergies. I ordered the spicy chicken ramen. It was delicious! And not too heavy or dense (which is my main complaint about other ramen places). The spice level was not too overwhelming and complimented the dish.

The korokke appetizer was perfect and paired well with the sauce provided 👌. The fried crunch level was great and inside was refreshing. Most fried items I have are over saturated with frying oil to the point it leaves leftover grease on the plate - that did not happen here and I am forever grateful for that. Keep up the good cooking!

This place is a refreshing turn from the normal establishment types in Killeen. I cannot wait to try more menu items from this amazing pub-like location.

I highly recommend this place.

I ordered the Chicken Karaage, and the plating was magnificent. Beautiful, crunchy chicken. The rice wasn’t overcooked or soupy.

The sushi rolls were also beautiful. Everything came out as expected, and in a timely manner!

So today wasy second time coming in here for ramen because first experience was relly good and delicious but today We order ramen with extra noodle, usually if you order extra noodle it should come with little more soup to accommodate those extra noodle but same regular size came with extra noodle so there was barely any soup in the ramen bowl. So obviously its gonna blend out the soup flavor so it didn't taste good either. Basically my bowl of ramen looked like just bowl of noodle no soup. Also it wasn't cooked all the way so noodle were sticking to eachother. If you add garlic to your ramen they will charge you for $2 for 5 thin slice of Garlic flakes. Im from So Cali and had alot of ramen but this was most disappointing one so far. But servers were amazing, they were very nice and attentive.

This restaurant is new, and I do plan to come back, in which case I will update this review. I hope this review is taken as a way to improve.

The food is good. I feel like a small piece of pork in the ramen isn’t enough, but, it was good nonetheless.

Now, let’s talk about the service. I came in at 1pm on a Wednesday. 2 tables currently dining, 2 servers on the floor. I sat down and was brought a menu by the manager.

I sat long enough to consider getting up and leaving before I was finally approached again by the manager to get my drink order and food order.

I was brought my drink by the manager.

I was brought my lunch by a female server.

My drink went empty.

I finished my food.

I sat for a while before a cook came up and asked to take the food bowl and plate that I had sitting on the opposite corner of the table. I said yes and asked for my check.

The manager brought my check.

The male server cashed me out.

I tipped $0 because quite frankly, no one did anything. I don’t even know who my server was!

As a former service manager, I leave these tips:

Establish a buddy system. Every table should be greeted within 1-2 minutes by the server, the servers “server buddy” (another server working the floor), or a manager and the party offered drinks.

As soon as possible, the server of the table should make contact (even if drinks are ordered/delivered) and apologize for taking so long to get to them and introduce themselves.

After food delivered, you should revisit the table shortly after you notice everyone has had a bite of their food, usually 1-2 minutes, sometimes longer! Offer refills and other sides (UPSELLING! $$$).

Constantly keep an eye on drinks!

For lunch time, deliver the check about halfway through the dining process and ask “do we think we are going to be ordering any desert?” And if they say “no”, advise them you are leaving the check for their convenience since it is lunch time, and that there is no rush!

Everyone was very nice, the service just needs work! Good luck and I look forward to better service next time I visit!

This place has so much potential if they can get their portions correct and adjust the staples of a traditional Japanese ramen. My husband and I both had 2 ramen tonkotsu bowls. The pork was sliced extremely thin (almost see through), probably only 3inches wide at max and only 1 slice in the entire dish. That’s all the meat. The umami egg was way over cooked and not even soft in the middle. The broth was good and was the only saving grace for this dish. For $12-$13 per person for ramen, I at least expected a bigger meat portion and not just noodles and broth and very little servings of veggies. We also added on a whole extra egg which was $2 and they only gave us half. We were so excited for a Japanese restaurant in town so hopefully this business can adjust in some areas.

Popped in on a rainy day with my partner for ramen and left wanting to be a regular! We got the Tonkatsu ramen and the karaage bowl and it was delicious. I would like to say that I would’ve loved more toppings on the ramen(I believe I only got like 4 bamboo shoots) and the chashu was pretty small but honestly other than that everything was great. The karaage was so crispy yet tender I was tempted to ask the chef for the recipe. They were kind enough to let me take a picture of their cool bar set up but I also wished the front of the restaurant was just as decorated so I had more to look at visually! We will be back as regulars and bringing more people along!

3.5/5 stars: I was really hoping to be wow’ed by this place, but I’m kinda disappointed. The first night, I got their Tonkotsu Ramen, which is typically my favorite kind. The chashu was very small and thin and tasted slightly charred, the broth was kinda bland, the ajitama was hardly seasoned with the soy sauce marinade, and the serving size was fairly small. I left kinda hungry even after having some edamame. I got the Shoyu Ramen with added garlic tonight which did have better broth, but I still left kinda hungry. They do have options for extra noodles, but I would hope that a regular serving size would be adequate. I also didn’t see a dessert menu. Fiancé had the shrimp roll last night which was good, but he said the tuna roll tonight just tasted like tuna salad. Overall, this place is conveniently located, but I’ll still occasionally travel farther to Temple for my favorite ramen.

I grew up eating pretty much any Japanese food in Las Vegas, and when I moved to Killeen I was severely disappointed in the options. I’ve spent the last couple of years searching for a good quality and authentic option in this general area and Hamaru has finally satisfied that. Their sushi is by far the best I’ve had in town and everything else they gave us to try was amazing. I have no complaints so far, this will be my new go-to spot and I hope they continue to excel.
