Mr. Max Izakaya Restaurant is a Chill izakaya with a quaint feel & Japanese-style seating, plus a sushi bar, tapas & sake offerings.
Showed up 20 minutes before it opened and waiting in line (with no reservation). I got a 1 hour wait where I left, and they called me.
I ordered a few items off the menu.
I started with the river shrimp, which were crunchy and tasted like a potato chip - I would order this again. I also ordered the chef's choice appetizer trio, I probably wouldn't order this again. What was actually given didn't feel worth the price.
The ramen was great, flavorful broth and ingredients.
Part of the restaurant was seated without shoes, but unfortunately, I got bar seating, which wasn't bad, but didn't give me the full experience.
Overall, food was good, but not worth the 1 hour wait, especially given they have a second location in Richardson.

This is a small place with great food and great service. Even the cost is reasonable! I would say minus one star because the cushions were a bit dirty with other customers dining in. Other than that, it's great.
For food, one of the best takoyaki I've had! Yellow tail was also good. Spicy roe sandwich was just alright.

Expect an hour wait. I enjoyed the chicken karaage, specially the sauce was nice. The Kobe skewer was okay, a bit disappointed with the lack of flavor and texture considering it was Kobe. The tofu wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as crispy as I would have liked.

Went there with friends for the first time. We made a reservation ahead of time, so we didn’t have to wait in line. Note: Reservations can be made for a party of 5 or more.
Their appetizers were very good and reasonably priced. The ramen was just okay. Would love to try different items next time.

Terrific place! It is very small/quaint (looks like it seated about 20 at tables and 12 at the bar), so wait time for a spot is long but worth it. Everything we ordered was a flavor explosion and arrived hot. The tapas portions were perfect for sharing and gave us the opportunity to try different foods. I see why they are popular and gained a spot on Yelp’s Top 100 restaurants in the US!

I heard a lot about this place before I came and it definitely lived up to the hype! The interior is definitely like that of izakayas (Japanese pubs) in Japan! Loved the selection of food a d everything was delicious! Wish it was a Lil cheaper, but def will come again! Highly recommend you come earlier than later, they fill up fast and the waiting list keeps growing! Can't wait to come back here! My only big complaint... that yuzu cheesecake was definitely lemon cheesecake 🤣😅

Hard to find. They're directly behind the Unicorn dog next door to a beauty salon. You should try the Takoyaki – Ball Shaped

This is my second time here and everything was so delicious. Ordered the takoyaki and karage chicken w/ tartar sauce, tonkotsu ramen, and katsu curry. The broth on the tonkotsu ramen was very creamy and just the right amount of richness and not too salty, portion was just the right ratio. My favorite was karage, katsu curry, and tonkotsu ramen. Service was great because they were attentive to food allergies.

Wonderful vibes and ambiance. I felt like I was in Japan. It's not really floor seating. Guest can hang their feet under the table in the "floor seating area.
I sat at the bar. It was cool to see cooks cooking the food. Very clean.
Went to the restaurant to genuinely try food so I ordered 5 dishes. Each dish was DELICIOUS and definitely had the Japanese umami flavors. The cooks are amazing!
I rate the service at 1 star because the main server that was serving me went from 5 star to 1 star AFTER I finished ordering. She was an older woman with highlights...maybe 50.
I carry a special tea with me to help me digest my food. No one carries it...it's special order. Never had an issue with drinking it at restaurants or I normally explain my situation. Without asking me or checking if I have a medical condition, the server got so upset with me, pointing her finger at me and lectured me to never to do it again. She made me feel like a child and embarrassed me in front of the guest sitting on both sides of me.
I felt so bad I offered her to take it away and throw it and she denied. Then why make a big deal if your not going to follow through enforcing rules?
She went from being so hospitable as I kept ordering, to completely ignoring me and treating me like my business was trash. She even had someone else bring my ticket and as I was leaving no asking if I enjoyed, or come again...she saw me walking out. as I walked towards her but she intentionally turned away. I then told her bye, thank you and she gave the cheapest greeting. I felt so unappreciated as a customer.
It was sad that I enjoyed my whole experience and had to leave feeling terrible.
This lady really needs to learn how to treat guest and consider some guest may have health issues that make it hard to be "normal".

Almost everything was phenomenal! Fried squid, fried dumplings, takoyaki all good!
Cold udon noodles were very dissappointing though. But everything else made up for it.
It’s really hidden too so don’t miss it! Truly amazing and we’ll back again!

The izakaya style Japanese apps and entrees were decent- but the service was not. The table next to us ordered several off the menu items that were refused to us for various reasons that turned out to be false.
Totally disappointed that unequal treatment will be the lingering sentiment when I think about Mr Max’s. Overall the service was lacking and cold.

love the food, it is indeed an authentic Japanese restuarant (yes thats a lot coming from a Japanese). HOWEVER, we were not pleased with the service at all. There was one Filipino waitress/server who treated us differently-- since my husband and friends were filipino. we wer enot given as much attention and it seemed like she was not as kind and attentive as compared to her other non-filipino customers. probably because we are not "Americans". please address this. this is unacceptable. This didn't happen just one time. we have been eating here multiple times and she has been like that to us. so we decided not to eat here anymore and have advised my other filipino friends as well.

Different world once you enter. Good food, beer.
I got the tonkatsu ramen bowl and chicken karaage.
Tonkatsu bowl tasted great (I added extra hot) and chicken in the karaage was tender.
Usually busy and I had to wait ~15 minutes to get a seat but it was totally worth it.

Food was just ok. Our server, lady with blue contacts, was pretty impatient and rude. We dine at different places all the time, Ethiopian, korean etc. Servers are very upbeat and happy to explain menu items. This lady made it feel like it was a chore to ask simple questions about the menu. Her potential might be better tapped into if she is some place where she does not have to speak with customers.

Mr. Max is an unassuming, hidden gem nestled in Irving, where the ambiance immediately transports you to Japan. The cozy, intimate setting is alive with the intoxicating aroma of authentic Japanese cuisine, creating an atmosphere that is both warm and scintillating. With its small size, reservations are highly recommended to secure a spot in this bustling haven.
One of the unique features is the ability to order food as you go, with attentive table service ensuring both food and drinks arrive promptly. Our group of six indulged in a delightful culinary adventure, savoring an array of dishes that left us in awe. From the fresh, melt-in-your-mouth sashimi to the juicy meatballs, perfectly cooked wagyu beef, and the crispy chicken karaage, each dish was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and flavor.
For a total of $490, including tips, the experience was well worth it, considering the variety and portion sizes. Mr. Max is not just a meal—it's an experience that captures the essence of Japan in every bite. Whether you're a local or visiting Irving, this spot should not be missed.

I was absolutely floored by this place, the entire experience was sublime. From the moment we sat down service was fantastic and there was never a shortage of food coming out. Favs were definitely radish salad, grilled squid with butter, agedashi tofu, grilled beef tongue, and takoyaki. Assortment of sashimi is always fresh.
Definitely a long wait, even if you get there at opening time, so try to snag a resy if you can! Definitely worth the wait if you can't, around 2-ish hours for walk-ins if you go that route.

Small spot, so the wait to get in may be between 1-2 hours right after opening. But it is WORTH THE WAIT. I always get the beef tongue, Taiwan pork sandwich, Taiwan ramen. My husband and I always make sure to try something different on the menu, and nothing has been less than delicious.

The food was authentic and delicious I felt like I was back in Japan. The service was ok but, I'm not blaming them the place is so busy and have to keep up with so many orders so it must be stressful. The seating is unique and everything around the restaurant makes you feel like you're not in America anymore. The wait times are usually over an hour and it's nearly impossible to reserve a seat because they are always booked up. It's busy like this for a reason because they offer authentic food that others fail to do. I wish the restaurant was bigger..... a place as successful as this should expand so they can cater to all the customer more efficiently however, this will not keep me away I will continue to go there with every trip to Dallas a make. This is a must go!

The Tonkotsu Ramen has to be the saltiest bowl of anything I’ve ever had in my life, and Im not exaggerating when I say the noodles were nearly dry too. I also had to dip my potato croquettes and fried kobe beef patties into the bowl of ramen because they practically had no flavor, so I definitely put the extra salt in the ramen to use.

It was my first time going here. My friends raved about it and I came in with super high expectations.
Flavors were definitely above average but nothing really wowed me.
We got the grilled squid. Takoyaki, sashimi, tonkotsu and one of their musubi sandwiches.
The atmosphere felt a bit rushed. It felt like we had to finish our food ASAP, so I didn't get the time to enjoy the flavors.
Visited 8 months ago
We were just at the restaurant after a 2.5-hour wait. While the food was unbeatable, we were disappointed with the service. Two servers attended to us: the first rushed our orders and rudely mentioned the kitchen was closing but that we could order desserts later. When we were ready for desserts, the second server checked her watch and said it was too late to order, although she did take our dessert orders and brought them. Despite the long wait, the service left us totally disappointed and RUDE.

This establishment clearly prioritizes quality ingredients. The staff's commitment to customer satisfaction is evident in their demeanor. The fried river shrimp is a standout menu item, deserving of high praise. Additionally, the takoyaki is a delicious and authentic offering. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a delightful dining experience.
Save yourself the wait and get some friends together for a reservation. You need a minimum of 3 for a reservation and expect to do so two weeks in advanced.

A big NOPE … Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.
Found this place via an article online for the best yelp restaurants. This was only place on the list in North Texas and it happens to be right the street from me.
We tried to visit this place once before, but the wait was too long.
This time around we got there at 415pm (they open at 500pm). We waited outside in this 100 heat wave for 45 min. I was hoping it was going to be worth the wait in the heat with no shade.
Once we got in, it is small. Very small. Only fits 24 people at a time. There is some charm to the place and it’s comfortable.
We order their “homemade” japan pork curry, beef bowl, shrimp tempura, pan fried pork belly with soy ginger, Kobe beef skewers and their grilled mackerel.
The curry was just average and cold. Nothing amazing about it. The rice was mushy too. Felt like we were eating leftovers. Was not good at all.
The beef bowl was a joke. Just shredded beef and rice that was bland and more mushy rice.
Shrimp tempura was also bland and nothing amazing about it.
The pan fried pork belly was another joke, it came sautéed not fried and covered with sauce that was way too sweet and overwhelmed.
the flavor of their so called pork belly. The steamed rice was also mushy.
The Kobe beef skewers was the worse. Greasy, chewy and no flavor at all. They need to be honest and stop calling this Kobe beef. It is definitely not Kobe beef. It was the worst thing we tried.
The only good thing we enjoyed was the big cup of cold ice water (since we were baking in the heat for 45 min ) and a bottle of Kirin beer.
Leaving the place, I asked my wife “what do you think”, Her reply was simply “Nope”.
Uno China down the street would hav been a better choice.
This was bad and huge disappointment. I don’t get it, maybe we ordered the worst items on their menu? Either way this was probably the worst visit I have had in years.
I cannot recommend this place. Don’t believe the hype, I didn’t taste it at all. Don’t waste your money.
We should have went and got crab legs instead.

I came by Tuesday nights, and after 30’ wait, we in the table( it ok to wait as the restaurant kind of small). The Takoyaki was good, but the ramen was too creamy + the taste was bad that it made me felt don’t wanna taken any more!!😓

Been looking for an authentic Izakaya in the US for decades. Finally found one in Irving, Texas. Right by Dfw airport in a strange neighborhood. Be forewarned: Parking is terrible.
I’ve known about Mr Max for a long time and never able to get a reservation. I was going to the DFW airport so I thought I’d go without a Rez and wait. I waited about 30 minutes after putting my name on the list.
Once admitted, I was transported back to Japan. Asahi draft, not great sake, and highballs. Ordered wagyu nigiri at $10 (not bad) and Otoro (inexpensive). Both delicious. Also agadashi tofu and some strange pork belly thing with aioli.
Love this place and can’t wait to return.
Update: June 2024
The A5 is chewy and NOT A5. I brought this to their attention and of course they denied it. I expected that, and let it go. Next thing I know I’m being moved from my seat. Not a big deal, it’s an Izakaya. Guess what happened next: I was asked to move a second time! I said “just give me the check”
Not sure what has happened to Mr Max. I heard the Max died and these guys are continuing the business.

I love this place but quality of food has gone downhill since last year. I’ve been here at least 6 times now and the this past time I went the chashu pork in the Tonkotsu ramen was so tiny and thin! (See my photo) I had to raise my concern to the waitress to get me a full piece because that’s not how you run business especially when it gets popular. There was a pushback initially from her but my boyfriend told her that we come here often and ordering the same ramen and never did we see chashu this small! Few mins later another waitress came over and gave me two full pieces of chashu and apologized to us.
At least they’re making it right for the customers.
The Takoyakis were also came soggy and soft with the tiniest octopus meat 😵💫

I lived in Japan for a year and I was able to eat authentic dishes here that I can’t find anywhere else. Everything was fresh and delicious. Only giving one star because I have to. Terrible experience. Got here at 9:18 and they said they couldn't serve us. They were service the others before us and tried to say the kitchen closes at 9:30 and that we could get our food to go when they clearly close at 10:00. Being the only black family in sight, I could only wonder if this was apart of the reason we were turned away from dining in. Will never come back here again!

My wife and I went to Japan back in 2023 and we’ve been looking for a good authentic izakaya ever since we returned. Mr. Max is that restaurant! Excellent quality Japanese comfort food. No need for fancy rolls or tons of unique sushi options. What they have there is made with exceptional care and is absolutely delicious. Karaage is a special obsession of mine, and they have the best around. The miso salmon was also incredible. There is certainly a long wait time depending on when you go, but believe me when I say it’s worth the wait! We’re definitely coming back!

Japanese-style "tapas", or small plates, or bar food (and more than bar food). Over all excellent (check my photos) and delicious. We had four guys and got nothing but the small plates, trying several different dishes. My favorites or the fried chicken (so juicy and delicious), the ginger and pork (mouth watering good), and the chashu rice sandwich. They open at 5pm and the line starts outside the building around 4. There are maybe four or so tables and a bar. The wait builds up quickly on the weekend. We waited an hour and that's with showing up at 4:15pm to wait in line outside but let me tell you, it was worth the wait. This is as close as you get to Japan.
Visited 10 months ago
I'm sure the food is good but unless you call ahead for table be prepared to wait,I was a walk in, they said 1 hour to 2 hour wait for one person (I understand) even when I did get called , it was still a wait , I was sitting there and no service (10 min , I understand it's busy , not complaining just my experience) but still s little annoying. Will definitely try to go again, just on a less busy day.

We went for the first time a few days ago. I did like the food it tasted good and the place was packed but this is mostly due to the size of the restaurant. Maybe max occupancy 24 people. It's great for two to four people but anything more than that you guys sitting separate. Also we went on a Tues got their at 5:10 and the place was packed so just know your waiting. The staff was attentive and people.

**5-Star Review for Mr Max Izakaya Restaurant in Irving, Texas**
Mr Max Izakaya is a rare gem of authentic Japanese cuisine right in the heart of Irving, Texas. From the moment we walked in, the Japanese décor transported us straight to Japan, setting a perfect atmosphere for our dining experience. The food is absolutely amazing. My favorite dishes were the Takoyaki, ramen, Uni, and the Aji (Japanese horse mackerel) – each one bursting with authentic flavors and expertly prepared.
The service was top-notch as well. Our waiter was incredibly nice and attentive, ensuring our table and all others around us were well taken care of. Although I heard the wait for a table can range from 1 to 2 hours, we got lucky and were seated within just 5 minutes. Additionally, there's plenty of parking outside, which made our visit even more convenient.
Mr Max Izakaya is a must-visit for anyone craving genuine Japanese cuisine. I highly recommend it and can't wait to return!

Their food is one the best in Dallas area. If you want athectic Japanese food, i would strongly recommend this one. The only thing you need be aware of before going is the space and seats are very limited, so you might need to be there by or before around the time they open. average waiting time is one hour or longer

Found this hidden gem by chance on Google maps. They are absolutely awesome. Food, service, and atmosphere are all excellent. After 1 month back from Osaka, this place took me back with all the vibes.
We got lucky without reservation and only waiting 40 min. I highly recommend making reservations in advance!!

The only thing I get to experience was service and it was bad. So we left.

ATMOSPHERE: when you show up to this restaurant the outside of the restaurant is simple and not what you would expect. When you walk inside it as though you walked into a Japanese restaurant in the middle of a Japanese city. Very traditional and you have two seating options: 1. The bar where you can watch the cooks work the grill 2. The Floor. You walk up take your shoes off and they seat you at the table where you sit on the floor. It’s actually surprisingly comfy.
FOOD: this place is a five star rating for food all around. If you’re not very adventurous and only want an American take on the food they do have options on the menu that will accommodate you. If you’re looking for more traditional Japanese options there are so many great options and all are amazing. They even have some more creative options that are still a nod to traditional Japanese but with a twist. I would definitely recommend asking the server for their recommendations if it’s your first time and just dive in.
SERVICE: they are quick and attentive yet still manage to be kind and patient. They even remembered my wife and I after months later from our first visit.
Over all I wouldn’t have anything negative to say about this place.
They only do reservations for 3+ people so if you’re a couple get there early and wait in line. TOTALLY worth it.

Authentic & reminded me of my last visit to Tokyo. Got great recommendations sitting at the bar and enjoyed tokyaki & salted beef tongue which was delicious! Long wait was well-worth it. Arrived at 6:45, seated at 7:25.

Amazing place great food , great service👌
Squid was great, salmon sashimi is very fresh, tako Wasabi is really good (I'm still thinking about it a week later). Beef tongue was tasty and we loved the ramen.
If you're in town stop by this place about a half hour before open. We showed up an hour early just to make sure we got in

Very good place to enjoy a Japanese dinner in the metroplex. Food is delicious, and the ambiance is cozy. Even though there is no mistaking Mr Max for an exact replica of what you would find in Japan, it has enough elements that trigger nostalgia for when I want to briefly teleport back to when I was living there.

Last week, my boyfriend took me here to celebrate late Valentine’s Day and the food is excellent! The fresh ingredients and quality of the food is well prepared by the chefs. The ambiance is comfortable. We ordered the beef bowl, assorted sashimi, karaage, and many more!
If you’re planning to come here, do come within at least 30 mins or an hour to wait in line before opening. Definitely will be coming back here again 😊

One of the best Japanese spots I’ve tried. Everything was incredible. One of my favorite restaurant interiors, too (feels like you’re in Tokyo). There are like 12 bar seats and 5 tables (traditional Japanese seating so not actually a table). You also have to take your shoes off!
Reserve in advance by calling the restaurant. There’s always a line. They can be booked out at least a few weeks. This is a really popular spot for a reason.
Pictured are delicious rice sandwiches!

Great food and worth the wait. Came here as we used to go to Monta pretty often, and wanted to get the ramen again. Really good and will definitely be coming back. Can definitely get busy but it's worth sticking around.

Loved the food!
First time here and it did not disappoint. I came for the Ramen 🍜 but ended up mistakenly trying other stuff… they offer a beer with 3 appetizers for $12.00 dollars which seemed exciting so I went ahead and ordered that - however our server brought out 4 different things and when we asked it actually has their own choice of appetizers not for you to choose so we spent more than we intended to. Just clarifying for any other guests who might go there for the first time.
Other then that we loved the food and will definitely return.

My favorite place in the whole dfw. Always a wait because it's worth it. If you plan to arrive after 8pm you might as well plan on just going another day. There's a line outside by 430pm usually lol. It's a very small place but not so noticeable once you're seated.
I personally think the best area is the bar seating overlooking the kitchen and grills. I've never been much of a fish enthusiast until I came here. The grilled miso salmon I could eat all day, hell the regular one as well. The teriyaki yellowtail and the yellowtail collar are both really good. I think any grilled fish they serve here would be good.
There's so many things I could list out that are great but it would be quicker to list the things I dislike. Shout out to the staff as well. Some of the most hard working people I've seen in the kitchen. It's busy from the time they open til close and they're getting the orders in and out very quickly. They've always been nice to me every time I've been here.
This place has been a part of a lot of good memories and I hope its open forever.

YUM. I’m still dreaming about the pan fried squid!! This place is the definition of “do not judge a book by its cover. The building does not fit many people but that is part of its charm. The izakaya feels authentic the moment you step inside. Ramen is not the best I’ve had, however, that doesn’t mean the food is not incredible. It does feel a bit cramped in there, but this place is truly about the experience. The food is top notch. Can’t wait to come back for more
