The short summary is great food and absolutely horrible service. I was so disappointed as the MF sushi places usually don't disappoint. We were able to get seated right away for our reservation and most tables were full. We ordered edamame and crudo with our martinis after sitting down. The martinis shockingly took 50mins to be delivered after asking 2x. They apologized and said they were short staffed but come on. They did comp the drinks but I would've kindly paid for more but figured they would never arrive. About 10 mins after arriving we ordered some sashimi and 2 rolls from the sushi chef since we were seated at the sushi bar. They handed us the sashimi a few mins later and yet we had not seen our appetizers yet. They eventually came out 15 mins later after 25 mins of waiting for edamame which seems silly. We were out of water most of the meal and had to ask for fill ups. One time not finding anyone I asked the hostess who said sure I'll take care of it and it took 10 mins for someone to bring it so not sure why she couldn't have helped out if they were truly short staffed. The drinks were good when they finally arrived and all the sushi was amazing as always. Its really disappointing that the service was so bad but appears I need to stick to their sister place, MF Lobster instead as the service there was A+.

Absolutely delicious! I sat at the bar and watched the amazing chefs prepare everything right in front of me. Beautiful, relaxing atmosphere. Don't be so quick to run to HEB and Kroger for sushi. Every person to pass me asked if everything was ok. They asked how was the food and is there anything else I needed. It was my first time so I was unsure of what to order. Every suggestion was amazing.

This is our favorite sushi restaurant. It’s consistently excellent food and service. The rice is perfectly seasoned with a little acidity. The fish is almost always perfect with a good selection of specials. The special nigiri comes dressed which enhances each bite wonderfully. The servers are very knowledgeable and can recommend different dishes based on your preferences. It’s a little on the pricey side but since everything tastes so great, I’ve always felt that it’s worth it. Definitely recommend for a sushi splurge.

Rainbow sushi roll was delicious. Edamame was good, but I would've preferred it to be hotter and salted. The edamame came out a bit cold. I got a couple of traditional rolls which were pretty good too. Service was solid and it's a really modern vibe. But honestly I think overall it's a great experience at a very fair price point.

Upscale cozy sushi. Well executed traditional and modern rolls as well as nigiri / sashimi as expected. Waitstaff was very attentive. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Small dining are with a clam vibe. Most tables have a partial view of the sushi bar where you can kinda watch them prepare the nigiri and rolls. The waiting area / bar is a bit more lively but that might be because we came on a busy night.
Difficult to park. There's a free surface lot but it's constantly full. Ume has their own valet.

The food was all amazing. Everything we ordered was good so you really can’t go wrong. There were a few cocktails that were very good but there were only a few so not a huge variety in cocktails. The nigiri is my fav so def get the signature when applicable. They have a really neat rectangular sushi that I would highly recommend as well. This place is pricey tho so don’t get mad when your bill is 300$

As someone who was in the Industry for eight years and Have family members that own restaurants, My New Year’s Eve experience here was absolutely awful. I will never be returning. It took 42 minutes to get a bottle of sake… Which does not require the skills of a craft cocktail or even having to make a drink.. It’s a bottle that you twist open.. 42 minutes I asked the manager and he lied to my face. It’s New Year’s Eve. You guys offer reservations if someone walked out tell me the truth, but don’t lie to me and say you just got slammed… we were there to pay good money to tip our waitress well. Our waitress didn’t come back for almost an hour. The people I was with got their appetizer. I never did. I had to leave an Uber home before I got my food after an hour and a half because it was New Year’s Eve and we had plans and that was an hour and a half after I ordered, it was embarrassing because it was my idea to go there. I brought people with me and I had to leave them at the restaurant: if you are going to be short staffed you should probably tell the people walking in and not have your manager lie. Then the people I was with said that it was their second and third time there where the service was Just like this, we will not be back anybody in Houston. I will not recommend it ruined my New Years Dinner, one thing I’ve learned just be honest

Loved everything about this place. Came in right after an Astros game in Astros attire and all, everyone was so welcoming and pleasant. Sat at the sushi bar which is a must. You have three rows of chefs, the chef closest to us, wish would of got his name, (middle age Asian man with cool beard) was so kind and informative and made amazing suggestions when asked. Loved him. I definitely recommend!

My Go-To Sushi Spot
When it comes to satisfying my sushi cravings, there's one place that never disappoints - UME. This hidden gem has become my go-to spot for delicious and reliable sushi.
What sets UME apart is the quality and freshness of their ingredients. The fish is always incredibly fresh, and the rice is perfectly seasoned. Each piece of sushi is expertly crafted, making every bite a true delight. Whether I order their traditional rolls or their specialty creations, I know I'm in for a treat.
The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and always willing to make recommendations. They create a welcoming atmosphere that adds to the overall dining experience.
The prices at UME are also reasonable, considering the quality of the sushi.
If you're a sushi lover like me, I highly recommend giving UME a try. You won't be disappointed!

The operations and service of the place is below par. Took a reservation for a time and made us wait for 45 min with absolutely no regards for customers time or an update and when asked when the table will be ready, all we got is we don’t know after waiting for 45 min ! Get the operations better as it is equally important as the quality of the food !!

We asked the server to check on our food and let us know if it is coming soon or if we should go elsewhere. Finally he just said he had no idea when our food would be ready and brought us our check, without comping a single item despite the significant wait and no food. 0/10 recommend.

It's no secret (at least here in Houston) that we have a great local food scene. And the fact that we have so many excellent options for sushi in this city was, when I arrived here, an unexpected added bonus. Kata Robata and MF Sushi are go-to's. Others open at stress-inducing regularity: Hidden Omakase, 5Kinokawa,, Handies Douzo, and many others. Ume, in the Heights, is the project of MF-trained chefs, Chris Kinjo and others and the fish is MF-caliber. Really excellent. Personal faves are the ocean trout, king salmon, amberjack and the chilean seabass tempura. But the vibe in the space is really strange. On a relatively slow night the sushi chefs were all standing stock-still in a row staring out over the dining room. The wait staff was warm but scattered, and the space had a blankness that was a striking contrast to the bright, delicious contents of our plates. Perhaps a music change-up, some new art, neon lights or something can liven the space up. We'll be back for the fish for sure, but we might sit out front next time and watch the evening unfold on White Oak Drive.

If you want real sushi, and cannot go to Japan, Ume Sushi is the place to go in Houston Texas. This is a cute little place, but don't make the small size fool you, there are at least nine chefs behind the sushi bar who are preparing your food to your taste. We started out with the cocktails, while we were waiting for our table, and I must say my Dirty Martini was up to my satisfaction. The staff seemed very nice and kind, and our waiter was exceptional. The reason I am giving 4 stars. here is the fact that the ambience seemed about average. That's the only thing I can say negative about this place.

Recently my wife and I had a double date night with one of my best friends and his wife. We actually haven’t had one in quite a bit since having the twins and my wife was craving sushi.
Even when we manage to get out for a meal on our own we are so lost with the whole food scene we always end up at Uchi. We were glad we let the other couple pick the location as we were able to experience our best sushi dining experience at Ume!
I let the other couple order from start to finish so I’m not sure exactly what I ate but everything was superb. The sashimi was so fresh every bite melted in my mouth.
The service was on point from start to finish. They were able to gauge our ordering and we never were left with an empty table or too many dishes at one time.
We definitely have our new go to sushi place the next time we can squeeze away from the twins!!

Terrible customer service. Went in with my child and was told there was no availability. The entire restaurant was EMPTY. Only one couple was there. My child had a a small ice cream and was told she could not bring in the ice cream… then was told I could sit at the bar, but not at a table. I came in my work clothes and feel like they denied me service based on the scrubs I have to wear daily as a doctor. As a business owner myself, I am appalled that there are still businesses with no customers inside, still choosing to pick who should enter and sit down. What a disgusting business model. Please go across the street to Karne instead. I have lunch there often and service and quality of food is outstanding. If you’re a physician working in the medical center and want to grab lunch without the need to change into a cocktail dress or leave your child in daycare, then save yourself the trouble from entering this place. It is not family friendly or open to sit you in their empty restaurant if you have work clothes on or a toddler holding your hand.

Ume is a delicious sushi restaurant!
It’s on the nicer and more expensive side, but not as expensive as say, Uchi. The ambiance and service are excellent, the food is delicious, and they employ an open concept kitchen where you can see the sushi chefs create art.
My highlights from this meal were the Aji (Japanese Horse Mackerel), the Sake (salmon) nigiri, and our waiter, Scott, who took excellent care of us. Aji isn’t always available here, but when it is, they serve the sashimi against the middle section of the fish with the spine, and once you’re done with that part, they take the spine back and fry it into a fish chip that you can eat afterwards. It was delicious!

When I read about the place, they advertised themselves as a subsidiary of MF, a sushi place I am pretty fond of… surprisingly the menu in UME is very similar to the one of MF. However, regarding quality, MF is still superior as I believe UME is more like MF on a budget. Don’t let the lower prices fool you, as the food is still very good and you get a great bang for your buck! The location is ideal and in the middle of a nice area where you can have a beer after dinner!! I recommend this place highly!

I loved the ambiance, very trendy and warm. Simple flavors are added to the fish so they don’t overpower the fish itself. Best sushi rice I’ve probably ever had. The rolls we ordered were okay, I should have done more research from reviews and pictures (kamikaze and Weinstein), but the nigiri was great and the duck skewer is a must order. We also enjoyed the smoked hamachi. I wouldn’t say the spicy tuna balls are a must. The servers are very friendly, overall would come again!

Fun tip: you can bring your own bottle of wine (there is an uncorking fee but cheaper/you can bring the bottle you want!)

We’ve been here two times before and the food and service was sublime. After not being here in about 8 months we were very disappointed. Service was subpar with 30 minutes going by before our server checking in sometimes.
Our sparkling wine was flat, our assorted mushrooms inedible, the Wagyu roll
was bland and the kamikaze roll was so bitter it was almost too much to stomach.
For the price, we will definitely reconsider a different spot in the future.

For those who enjoy truly fine sushi and modern Japanese cuisine from the likes of Kata Robata and Uchi, MF Sushi's sister restaurant Ume does not disappoint.
From delicately seasoned signature nigiri to their ume-smoked skewers and crudo, there is a LOT to enjoy from the menu.
Ume has quickly become one of my go-to spots for a luxurious meal!

Exceptional Sushi! To the level of MF sushi and UCHI, expensive but not offensive. Great service, fish quality top! I’m very picky about the rice and this one is how I like it a little acid, a little sugary with salt. Not warm, not cold and nicely loose, just at the perfect point where you can taste the fish and elevates flavors, most of the nigiris came with a sauce and the umami was superb.
We ordered:
Miso soup
Eggplant miso yaki (I will come back for this one)
Niguiris (we ordered signature ones)
Maguro
Kanpachi (favorite)
Sake
Rolls
Issa
MF Box roll (favorite)

The fish selection and flavors add were perfect. Plus I discovered a new beer that I like! So happy to have a sophisticated restaurant like this in The Heights

Solid service and even better food. The entire dinner was pretty much in line with what I’ve been accustomed to with MF and that’s more or less what we were hoping for. Sitting at the sushi bar was a fun experience as it gave us more of an appreciation for the entire process. The biggest highlights of the meal were the Tuna Avocado Ball and Baked Lobster Tempura appetizer. Both were very unique and had a nice mix of flavors compared to a lot of typical sushi appetizers. The other dishes we had were all great as well, including all of the different nigiri dishes (A5 Wagyu Beef Aburi was the best). Definitely another sushi gem in town and one that I know I’ll go to again.

this place is so pretty and cozy! i like layout of the restaurant, how there is a separate space for the bar and omakase.
the parking wasn't bad at all, prob because we came around 9pm but i think during peak hours you might have to valet. valet is $7.
i walk in and instantly liked the vibe. i didn't know this restaurant was sister property with mf sushi!
the host was friendly and our server Andrew was personable and chill. everything was delicious and they had uni here. sadly the taste wasnt what i was expecting. i prefer the uni/uni pasta at 5kinokawa. i enjoyed their hot green tea, miso soup, and all the plates we ordered.
mf sushi is my top 1 and i was lowkey comparing the two but the quality was no different. there are some small differences in taste/visual but nothing too different. the only thing is the vibe, mf sushi is more classic modern and ume is more cozy warm.
i would recommend this place. in fact i will prob give it another try next time!

Best sushi I've had ever! My girlfriend and I had a dinner reservation, but had to wait at the bar for 45 mins before being seated. We didn't mind, so we ordered drinks and some appetizers while we waited (order the Ume cocktail). At the same time, the front of house staff was regularly updating us on our table and to us it was no issue at all. When our table was ready, the same front of house staff told us all our drinks and apps were on the house because of the long wait, which my girlfriend and I thought was excessive and offered to pay for the items. They insisted no, and proceeded to escort us to our table. As far as the food goes, you have to get the baked lobster tempura, and for all my non-raw sushi lovers, get the grilled eel! My girlfriend is not particular with the raw fish, but tried some fatty tuna and was pleasantly surprised by no fishy taste! Either way, we left with 100% satisfaction and will continue to go back!

This restaurant has a lovely ambiance! It's actually MF sushi's sister location so you know you can expect great things from the food here. It certainly did not disappoint! We ordered a few apps and mostly stuck to rolls. There wasn't a single dish we didn't enjoy. The Ume Wood Smoked Hamachi was a personal favorite of mine, it's great if you enjoy light, refreshing flavors. And I would be remiss if I didn't comment on the A5 Wagyu Beef roll. It's very rare for me to come across Wagyu that is actually deserving of the name. While I am no food connoisure, I've enjoyed real Wagyu in Kobe. It's buttery, flavorful, and melts in your mouth. This met that expectation! It's definitely a roll worth trying. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the rolls you order. They were all delicious in their own unique way.

Pros: good/fresh quality fish. Unusual/rare fish offerings. Service was attentive (but did feel rushed)
Cons: Restaurant is LOUD not an intimate setting at all which takes away from the dining experience (reminds me of RA sushi as far as ambiance and music choice).
If you are looking for a higher end sushi restaurant with good ambiance look elsewhere. If you are wanting a quick sushi bite before you hit the bars then this is your place...

We came here for the first time. The decorations are so cute. The food were delicious. The drinks were amazing. Lychee Virgin was very good for non alcohol. Every single dish was great, fresh, decorative, and tasty. After I ate sushi here, I may not want try some other gross places that I used to eat. We’ll be back. Best service ever. Wonderful chefs. I attached few photos that I had.

Food and service is amazing!! The place is too bright is the only down fall. Feels like walking into a hospital.

Out of all my sushi experiences, I’d honestly say that this place was average. Don’t get me wrong everything we had was up to par. Most notably the baked mussels. However, for the price you pay, there’s other spots in Houston that offer better quality. Service was fantastic, our waiter Andrew was kind and attentive. Ambiance was nice and the layout was tastefully done. But if I were to keep it short. It’s average sushi in a wealthier part of town.
I’ve included some of my dishes, forgot to take pics of my Otoro, Baked Mussels, among other stuff.
Cheers!

This place is a must try! We sat at the bar, Long and Rizzi are amazing!! Super educational with the menu and gave awesome recommendations. Great vibes, great nigiri and sashimi! We will def be coming back! Love this place- try it out!

5 stars well earned. I have now been about 10 times…yes 10 and each time has proven to be even better than the last. I am a minimalist at heart, so the decor is stunning, clean, and incredibly appealing to the eye. The decor almost compliments the presentation of the dishes and before you even taste the food you are entranced with the ambiance.
I’m from the west coast and will proudly say, I have grown up on fresh seafood. The Ocean Trout, King Salmon Belly, Toro, and Hamaci nigiri “Specialty” are some of the best I’ve had in TX. If you prefer rolls, the Weismann and Osaka Box are some of my favorites. They aren’t packed with Mayo or “fillers”. Simply lite and fresh. I have read a couple reviews stating they didn’t think their sushi was good…I truly truly beg to differ. What I do recommend is asking your waiter/waitress for some recommendations. I would not have known to order some of the nigiri options without their expertise. It DEFINITELY upgraded the experience.
If you are feeling dessert…their variety of Mochi is lovely! Depending on the day you can find: Blood Orange, Strawberry, Mango, Pistachio, Green Tea, Red Velvet, Birthday, Chocolate, etc. All have proven to be delicious and “hit the spot”.

Wow! Wow! We had an amazing experience. A real sushi experience, we enjoyed every piece of it. There were 5 that were my favorite. The spicy scallops cone, are so rich, freshness in their ingredients. We had 3 different salmon pieces, all of them were prime wild quality. Melted like the finest butter in your mouth. Signature Salmon, wow. I also marked 2 in the menu, lime infused... make sure u don't use soy sauce, or a little to truly taste the flavors. One of the best sushi experience.Spicy tuna was delicious.. Hiroshi Hamara, a tru Master. Thank you for the amazing culinary experience.

Could not have chosen a better place to spend our anniversary. Got a last minute reservation for the bar and I am so glad to have been seated there. The ambiance was great. We got to interact with the very charismatic sushi chefs more and that just added to the meal. As someone who struggles to order, I greatly appreciate patient waiters that can provide both personal recommendations and also point out popular items. Andrew was able to help me nail exactly what I wanted from a flavor standpoint. Dishes are brought out one after another attentive to when to finish your bites. The timing is seamless, the staff is so well trained. Another waiter over heard me say I need to use the ladies room not knowing where to go and escorted me. Aside from the superior experience, I would say food nonetheless follows suit. Everything I ordered had great flavor and presentation. A much needed date night in the books thanks Ume!

We were excited to try a new sushi restaurant and drove across town to the heights. Host was friendly and welcoming, servers were attentive. Sushi was just OK, we ordered toro nigiri, yellow tail, uni, kani, just to name a few. Tab came out to be ~$150 for two people (no alcohol, pre-gratuity). I don’t mind spending more for quality, but at the price point they are charging, unfortunately the sushi did not match up. I’ve had much better! I would not recommend purchasing the good stuff from here, if you like sushi rolls, you’ll be fine. Nigiri, sashimi, uni, toro…you will be disappointed.

Clean atmosphere, great service, sushi was amazing, price was reasonable for the quality. Overall recommend.

My wife & I had dinner at Ume tonight (Sunday). We traveled 41 miles to eat at this new sushi restaurant and we willingly gave it every opportunity to shine. Unfortunately after ordering a variety of dishes and spending $230 (no alcohol and before tip) they fell very short. We ordered sashimi, three appetizers, Hamachi Kama, two rolls, vegetables, and some nigiri. All the food was just ok, really lacked any flavor and the portions were smaller than restaurants of similar price points. The ponzu sauce for the Hamachi Kama was house made and excellent.
They must address the noise level. It was painfully loud and it was impossible to hear the waitresses through their masks. They really need to hire an acoustic engineer to fix this. There is no acoustical separation between the bar and the restaurant. The restaurant side itself was already way too loud and the added din from the bar was overwhelming and there were only two tables of people in the bar. When we walked out the door, we immediately felt relieved, which tells us how bad it really was.
We wish them well but we will not return.

The food was delicious and the quality even better. My favorite was the Chefs Choice Nigiri. The only thing that was lacking for my friends and I was our service not very attentive or helpful but reading the reviews I can see this was not the issue for others.

The food and fish here is absolutely delicious. Great quality fish and the management is really friendly. Parking is definitely a nightmare though for dinnertime in the area, and it can seem like the staff is really ushering you out after your meal, they more or less have a time limit per table. Regardless, I would certainly come back!

Parking is always a challenge on this stretch of White Oak. There is a shared lot for several businesses as well as street parking. I like the giant door with the super tinted windows. Huge contrast when you step inside where it feels open and bright. The staff was very welcoming. We made a reservation before going, not sure if it's required. All of the food was amazing! The fish was super fresh and prepared perfectly. Our server made several recommendations and everything was delicious. The black cod fish was flaky and cooked to perfection. The beef skewers were tasty. Depending on how and what you order, it can get a little expensive so be prepared for that. They do have a chef's selection for both nigiri and sashimi. Overall, very pleased with the entire experience at this restaurant. If you like Japanese food / sushi, definitely worth a try.

I've been to Ume and have sat and the sushi bar and a table, both were great experiences. The chef's nigiri plate is excellent, and i've had several rolls which are good too. It's a nice intimate atmosphere, and they service is great.

Consistently 100% better taste than any other Houston sushi restaurant.

I had been eyeing Ume before it opened as I’m a huge MF Sushi fan, but I always seemed to forget it was an option when I gravitated to my usual Uchi, MF, or Kata Robata for really good sushi. I finally went today, and I am glad I finally tried it. We ordered so much that I can’t even remember but the fish is such high quality (similar to MF) but it had a ton of creativity (like Uchi).
The ambiance was lovely too. It’s a great place for a group dinner, fancy date night, and like us - just a family meal with the kids.

I went to this place with my mom and brother, we had a excellent time. The food was fresh and it was delicious. The staff were extremely nice and understanding.

I wasn’t that impressed by the quality or the menu selection. For the prices, I’ve definitely had much better sushi. There is virtually no noise cancellation in that restaurant, it’s one of the loudest places I’ve ever been! Maybe since it’s newly opened they haven’t put sound reduction stuff in. We had to shout at each other, and could barely hear the server, doesn’t make for the most relaxing dining atmosphere. The decor is pretty cute though, parking is a definite drag, fortunately we live close by and could walk. I was looking forward to this being a new staple, oh well!

Im a very picky person when it comes to raw fish/sushi. Has to be clean, fresh and tasty! This place has a 10/10 in all categories. Their service is top notch! My new favorite place!

Absolutely love this restaurant! Hostess welcomed us as soon as we walked in. Our server Kyle was absolutely wonderful! He helped my husband, who is very particular, with making some sushi selections. We both enjoyed the Osaka roll, Tony roll, Godzilla roll, and Kamikaze roll. We tried the baked lobster tempura and Chilean sea bass tempura. Both dishes were very tasty. If you want quality sushi, this is the place. We will definitely be back.
