Koi is a casual contemporary sushi restaurant in Houston Montrose with an array selection of wine, sake & craft cocktails that makes Koi a great spot for food and beverage enthusiasts.
We have a full bar, dining area, patio, and private rooms that will accommodate to all.
The restaurant was pretty empty, which was so surprising! This is definitely a hidden gem! The food and the drinks were amazing π The enoki butter was surprisingly a soup dish but it was packed with so much flavor. All of the fish cuts were generous and extremely fresh. The cherry on top is the cost for the quality. I will definitely be returning.

Koi is above average restaurant in Houston compared to other sushi restaurants. The food is good and reasonable for the price that you pay. The fish is fresh. Of course I would expect more in the flavors. I came with a friend. We shared the Taramiso Apple and Aburi Salmon Roll. Each of us got a Nigiri Platter and Spicy Bluefin Tuna Handroll. I was most impressed by the Taramiso Apple, the marinated miso black cod was so soft and delicious. I wad quite disappointed because the server told me that weβre going to get some from the list of toyosu special (fish imported from Japanese - also more expensive). However, the only I got from that list is Hirame. Additionally, the food came out pretty slow, I waited about 20+ minutes for each dish, even though the restaurant was not that busy.
Our server - Ashley was really sweet, friendly, dedicated and passionate.
I love the interior inside of the restaurant, super iconic and classic of Japanese vibes.
They offered complimentary valet parking, free mochi ice cream or Espresso Martini when you leave them a review.
My visit was on Friday, November 29, 2024.

Great vibe and beautiful food presentation. The staff were very kind and attentive. However, the taste was so disappointing. While the toppings were good, the sushi rice was too plain and seemed overcooked. It lacked the flavor and texture expected in sushi rice. I hope they can improve this aspect because everything else was promising.

I've been waiting to try this place for months, and it did not disappoint. Great service and great vibes- perfect for a date night.
For our mains we got the sashimi platter and we were shocked by how good the madai was along with everything else. We also got the mega dragon roll because my boyfriend loves unagi. We finished off with the some handrolls, which were overflowing with filling!
One of the best parts about this place was the cocktails. We got the wasa-bae and the mango sticky rice! Both were very flavorful and unique, but we loved the mango sticky rice so much we ordered two more. I'd come back for the cocktails alone!
Overall great experience. Only bad thing about this place is finding parking. Looking forward to dining here again.

Food is really good and somewhat reasonable pricing. Sushi is yum π
It definitely has a nicer restaurant feel, so you might be out of place if you're wearing regular clothes- That being said, you can wear whatever you want. Just know there'll be dates and such in the nearing tables π
Maybe get a reservation if it's a busy time of day. It is a pretty small and popular place, so I'm sure the seats fill up quick.

A quaint sushi spot in busy midtown, Lnown for their outstanding cuts of sashimi and nigiri, and lengthy list of diverse and traditional handrolls. Their cocktail program is better than nearly any sushi restaurant in the city, as they are made with quality ingredients and are crafted by the incredible staff. Our servers, Daniel and Brianna, were very informational and extremely kind! We love Koi!

NEVER COME TO THIS PLACE.
If youβre a fan of poor service, this place will be an unforgettable experienceβone of the worst youβll ever encounter.
Here's the undeniable truth: We came for dinner tonight and ordered some alcoholic drinks. I have a severe allergy to cinnamon, which I noted when making my reservation.
First, the drink menu didnβt list cinnamon as an ingredient. We were told by the server that they switched to a new menu two weeks ago but failed to mention that cinnamon had been added as a garnish. By the time I realized the drink contained cinnamon, I was already experiencing allergic reactions. After double-checking, the server confirmed the presence of cinnamon and called over the manager.
What followed was the most RIDICULOUS explanation Iβve ever heard in my life. The manager said they recently updated their ingredients but hadnβt had time to revise the menu yet. I totally understand that updating the drink menu could be time-consuming and costly and also cinnamon is not a common allergen which is unworthy for this restaurant because in this two weeks nobody died of it.
The manager then said, "It took us a long time to come up with this menu. I will take the drink from you and waive this drink from the bill." I understand the need for you as a manager to defend your team and your reputation, but this was not the time for it. I was already experiencing severe allergic reactions due to your team's negligence and lack of professionalism. Boasting about your teamβs menu development process while Iβm suffering was insensitive. I respect your effort and sincerely suggest that another occasion would be better for discussing your menuβs brilliance, preferably find someone else who are more receptive to applause.
Finally, the manager apologized, saying, βI apologize for the miscommunication between us.β As a foreigner, I found this offensive. I had clearly noted my allergy in the reservation profile. If the staff doesnβt read these notes, why have the option to include them? Either read and respect what your customers write, or be upfront: βWe do not review reservation notes; please inform us in person at the front desk.β That would be the only way for me to accept your apology and perhaps write this review more positively and friendly.
Overall, I didnβt feel that I received a genuine apology. Instead, I felt the issue was dismissed as a minor, forgivable mistake. The blame was subtly shifted onto me due to βmiscommunication.β I only regret for choosing you for this Black Friday dinner and late thanks giving gift for giving me this extraordinary SPECIAL and UNIQUE experience to mark my end of 2024.

The food and decor were both amazing, but service was lackluster and not what I expected from a restaurant of this caliber.
We came in as a party of five on a Saturday night around 8:45 and ordered appetizers prior to ordering our food, and it took about 30 minutes to get one handroll before receiving one appetizer. Most of us ordered three hand rolls each, but the waitstaff who brought our food did not know what was ordered and what was missing. The handrolls each person ordered were also not put together in the same wooden serving block, so we had to reconfirm with each other and the waitstaff to figure out what the kitchen still hasn't made. There was also one handroll that was brought out that no one ordered.
This occurred three times, and one of us did not receive her miso soup (which I'm assuming is already premade) until 80% into her meal. She also didn't receive her salmon flight of four nigiris until an hour after ordering.
The attitude of the waitstaff was very kind, and they let us know that we can just have the extra handroll they made in error, and waived the fee of the miso soup. However, the combination of the excessive wait time and us needing to constantly reconfirm our order was a little disappointing.

This is a lovely gem off of Westheimer that offers a outstandingly fresh selection, besides imported from Japan, special selection, sushi, and sashimi. I ordered the bluefin flight of five types of tuna, which was exquisite some of the best Iβve had in all of Texas. My only suggestion is that the overeager server not talk so much or as fast she was a little bit overwhelming in her enthusiasm, but besides that great place highly recommended.

The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere, but the service was quite slow, even though the place was nearly empty. It took 30 minutes to receive just two rolls. The food was good, though that may have been because I was getting hungry. I wouldnβt recommend dining here if youβre short on time.

Amazing ambience. Very quiet and chic interior. Service was top notch, and the waitress was very attentive.
For dinner I ordered 1) chutoro roll, 3) wagyu tarts, 3) kaki fry, 4) bluefin sashimi, and 5) chutoro sashimi. Overall, the food was good. But the sashimi did not wow me - at $28 for the chutoro sashimi, it underwhelmed and tasted slightly sour.

Given the competition in that area, the experience wasn't great.
Staff was fine, no issue with our waitress.
The food wasn't great though.
Compared to Uchi and Soto the food for the price was very very underwhelming.
The ambiance was ok, but the private room we were given had leaky ac vents that was dripping water on the table. We were not told of this when given the room, and there was another room with a vacant table that was also private, that also had leaky ac vents but at least they were not leaking on chairs or the table. But there seemed to be hesitation on giving us that room.

The atmosphere is sophisticated with a sense of warmth. Koi is better for more advanced sushi eaters that arenβt afraid of raw fish. Service is phenomenal with individuals who are excited to be there and make the experience so much more enjoyable. Their selection of sushi isnβt overwhelming. Their drink menu is larger with awesome flavors. I always get their Lycheetini. For appetizers, I would suggest the Hama Chili, Tara & Truffle, or the Crispy Rice (good for two people). Out of their rolls, I love the mega dragon and the royal chutoro. Their hand rolls come with little wrappers that prevent the sweat from the rice. So cool. Had the Bluefin flight and it was fantastic! Great flavors and cut of tuna. Their chefs know what theyβre doing. Great place. Must go for sushi. If youβre a California roll kinda gal or guy, they donβt have it.

I recently dined at Koi in Houston Texas and was thoroughly impressed. The ambiance is a perfect blend of traditional and modern, setting a serene atmosphere. Was disappointed with Koi and expected a lot ore for the price point and higher reviews. The service was great and several of the dishes we had were good (Agenasu and Crispy rice) but overall everything was missing something and a bit of a letdown for the price range. We ended up not finishing several of the dishes (El Diablo and Mega Dragon rolls) as they were dry and not good. For the price range would recommend trying somewhere else.

We went to Koi to celebrate my son's 24th birthday. Koi was a good pick, first time here. The sushi was fresh and delicious. Got to try the fried tofu, yummy. We were very pleased with the service, everyone was nice and attentive. Definitely will return.

Let me start off by saying how wonderful the staff was. Our waitress and another server were very kind to us. However, the food was mid. It wasn't terrible, but for the price point, we expected a lot more. It was bland and flat, none of the ingredients were highlighted, and it felt like it was such a waste of good ingredients. I got the expensive items such as uni pasta, tokyo seven, hand roll tasting set, 6oz koi beef steak, to make my first experience good so that I can have a good judgement to come back next time. For the hand roll tasting set, which included uni, caviar, wagyu beef, and foie Gras, and we can barely taste them. As for the uni pasta, the pasta was undercooked and the noodles were hard and very chewy. The server was kind to recook/make a new one, but I just took it to go leaving disappointed after spending around $300.

My husband and I came here for a date night, and it was incredible! We had Van as our server and she was superb! The chefs special caviar service was a pleasant surprise of delicious taste buds. We got the matcha made in heaven and a spicy drink that were BOTH delicious! The kinmedai, chutoro, and uni were great! The El Diablo roll was too smoky for me, but thatβs my fault bc I didnβt read the torched escolar part! Incredible experience and we canβt wait to do another date night here!

From the moment I stepped out of my car to the moment I got back in, everyone treated us with great service. Our waitress Van was a great help with the menu and recommended great dishes for our first time. Raymond the manager also came by and made sure our drinks and dinner was on point. Every dish that came out was beautifully plated and tasted amazing. Would definitely recommend coming here! The wife and I will definitely be coming back for more!

In short: creative and imaginative plates make this fairly-priced Montrose joint a great breath of fresh air.
After driving by a few times, I finally stopped in for a weeknight dinner. The menu was lit up with flamboyant offerings, striking a good balance between small plates and sushi.
The small plates were fantastic and unique. There was the βTaramiso Appleβ (a marinated black cod served INSIDE an apple), the βCrunchy Toriβ (a kind of Japanese-inspired cordon bleu), and elegant yet tasty hand rolls.
The sushi offerings were simple, which complemented the more superfluous small plates well. The Toyosu Platter was well-selected, with delicious Japanese fish that arenβt usually at the forefront of the American palate.
The rolls are also grand and fairly-sized, and it could be argued that one could make a meal out of these diverse rolls themselves.
One peculiarity I did notice however, was that the menu as a whole seemed a bit pretentious. Simply put, having uni + caviar hand rolls, or A5 wagyu beef steaks, simply isnβt necessary and detracts from the rest of the offerings. A certain level of commitment is necessary to stand upon these ultra-luxury ingredients, and it would be better suited for Koi to focus on their strengths (i.e. the small dishes and Japanese-local sushi).
This is a bit nitpicky, but I did notice that the restaurant felt quite segmented. Especially at a place like this, where so much imagination is being put into the composition and presentation of each dish, I wouldβve appreciated a bit more connectivity between the diner and the back-of-house.
In all, though, Koi serves fairly-priced cold and hot plates which you wonβt find anywhere else. A good spot to try if youβre able to sift through the more money grab-y dishes and/or you have a craving for fresh Japanese fish.

Japanese experience sushi in Houston. It's nice to have such a a high class restaurant here. Very well run, and their prices are much better than the two competitors they are in between on lower Westheimer. Right next to Numbers...is that place really still open? I don't think so.

Food is just OK. Everything is either overly sweet or Salty. If you love sushi and love authentic sushi, skip

Koi was a big let down for us. With all the amazing sushi in town, this is not it. Everything was ok but execution was off. The el Diablo roll essentially had burnt spices on the top. They should probably torch it and then spice it. The other rolls were fine but nothing to rave about for us. The Japanese Wagyu hand roll had good flavor but it was crazy over cooked. The tuna tower was good but that is widely available. Also, charging $5 for valet is silly for a nice restaurant. Service was ok but empty water glasses were common.

First time dine-in here. Atmosphere was warm and quite formal. I did not know they do Happy Hour which is a good deal to try more food.
Waitress and under training waitress were nice, professional, and careful. Food was tasty, fresh, and good looking.
However, Signature Handroll Tasting which attracts me to here, was disappointed me a bit. The waitress told me that the restaurant sold out Uni so the Uni, Ikura, & Caviar hand-roll so could sub to A5 Wagyu Foie Gras for same price. I accepted to change Uni hand-roll to Wagyu hand-roll. When the plate arrived, 2 of Wagyu hand-rolls came without Foie Gras ( you can see my picture).
I am not sure if the Chef forgot to put Foie Gras on or they sold out, but it substituted by Tuna and Scallion. I should tell waitresses but I did not want to put them in a hard time.
Highly recommend Royal Chutoro Roll.
Overall, Koi is a new restaurant in the area so they may need to adjust arrangement. I will still come back for the good service and high-quality food. I will give a second chance to see their improvement.

This place is fine. The hot and cold tastings were decent but the nigiri and sashimi pieces left something to be desired. The El Diablo maki roll was good but a little dry. Hereβs what we got with an asterisk to indicate what weβd get again:
- Spicy Edamame*
- Crunchy Tori*
- Beef Tataki
- Maki roll: el diablo
- Spicy Wagyu Handroll
- Nigiri:
- Sake
- Sake Hara
- Hamachi Hara
- Madai
- Kanpachi
- Kinmedai
- Shimaaji
- Bluefin flight

I went to Koi for the 2nd time last Saturday and it was just as delicious as the first time. I've been raving about it to everyone and my sister finally got to try it and said it was the best sushi in Houston and I agree. I was also the first to try the new revamped Dragonrita and let's just say I've found my new go to drink. I usually order the Lycheetini but the Dragonrita was so smooth you couldn't even taste the alcohol..dangerous, but absolutely delectable. The fish is so fresh and the dishes did not disappoint. Every single dish was amazing.
We also ordered the Igageso and it was perfectly seasoned and wasn't tough at all.

I was searching for a new sushi spot and came across Koi. The atmosphere was very beautiful and the staff were very welcoming. We got seated and were helped right away. We werenβt sure what to get so our server Van gave us some recommendations. She recommended crispy rice, salmon flight, blue flight & the handroll tasting. They were all very yummy! Our server was very attentive but not overbearing she was very sweet and fast. I will most definitely be coming back!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Koi. It was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the staff, and the ambiance was both elegant and inviting. The hand roll selection was exceptional, with each dish beautifully presented.
