Kanau Sushi & Izakaya has launched their new format "ALL YOU CAN EAT" 7 days a week on August 7, 2023, Lunch is $26.95 and Dinner is $36.95, Children under 11 are $23.95, under 4 are $6.95, dinner starts @ 2:PM, Patrons can still order from the menu anytime. We are open daily from 11 am to 9:30 pm Sunday to Thursday, Friday and Saturday we are open till 10:30 pm. Pretty good sushi for an all you can eat place. Was very surprised with not only the quality of the food and the amount of options but also with how quickly they would bring it too. The staff is pretty friendly and super helpful and they kept blasting Purple Disco Machine and Lady Gaga. We will definitely comeback!

On 12/30/2024, they denied service to a very well behaved medical alert service dog, refused to give me the guys name, or general managers card and was told they have every right to deny service to anyone or any service dog.

Anytime I tried to educate I was shut down with misinformation.

Avoid if u are disabiled or have a service dog!!!

Went here last night for the first time. Nice to have an AYCE spot in the loop. Food was really good. Little odd ordering all from your phone but it was easy. Will definitely be back. Drinks were good. About average on price. Overall a solid place for sure. Ask for Diego. He is amazing.

came in for a late lunch & with barely other patrons in at that time, food came out almost instantly.
i’d come back for the sashimi, seaweed salad, & cucumber salad, but skip the sushi rolls & calamari. the spicy tuna came out more of a pate style with an untraditional spice that wasn’t anyone’s favourite.

our server gave unnecessary attitude towards the when paying (we thought you had to pay through the phone since there was a checkout option yet nothing was communicated), but i’d still be willing to come back for the quality & value of everything else.

Genuinely some of the best sushi I've had in Houston! It's all you can eat with smaller portions which solves my biggest compliment everywhere else I go. Everything I tried I loved!

Also Diego was Badass, we were here on a busy Tuesday night and he was soloing the floor the bar as well as hosting. Man is a machine, kept everything topped off and with a smile!

I was surprise to eat all you can eat sushi in Texas. Still fish is flash frozen so why not.

The rice was acceptable and supported the fillings. The sashimi was sliced super thin but the yellow tuna and mackerel had enough oil to be tasty when thin. The unagi nigari is good when done aburi style.

There were some interesting takes on sushi where very strong flavours of spice and salt were used. It was a cultural experience that way.

I was surprised that there was no American wasabi or pickled ginger with the sushi. Also the sunamono is really a cucumber salad.

An fun experience to those wanting to try something new.

Kanau USED to be one of the best up and coming sushi places in Houston. Fresh menu and cool roles.
NOW it’s just a greedy, lazy excuse for a restaurant.
Bad rolls, HEB sushi is better.
Lazy presentation, sashimi just thrown on a plate.
Poor service, constantly telling us β€œrules” like β€œthey will be checking for uneaten food”.

For $40 a person (!!!!!) THIS PLACE IS NOT WORTH IT. I will never return. I had gone to the previous ownerships restaurant many times and I will never be back because of how poorly it has gone downhill. I used to bring so many people here but now I’ll make sure to tell everyone to avoid it.
NEW OWNERS: your restaurant will fail within the year. Goodluck.

The service attitude was extremely poor. They forced us to finish a dish that we return before allowing us to order more, and refused to listen to any of our explanations. We've visited this restaurant three times in the past two months and have recommended it to several friends, so we feel deeply disappointed by this treatment.

As non-native English speakers, we mistakenly ordered a pork katsu instead of pork skewers. We only realized the mistake when the dish was served. We apologized sincerely and patiently explained the situation to the server. Since we hadn’t touched the food and it looked like a good dish, we didn’t want to waste it and decided to return it.

After returning the dish, another female server, with a stern and disrespectful attitude, told us directly that because we returned the dish, we had to finish the entire katsu(pork riceοΌ‰ we returned before we could order anything else. Initially, we accepted this without showing any emotion. A few minutes later, the same server brought back the two returned dishes and, in an even ruder tone, repeated that we had to finish these dishes before ordering anything else, then turned around and left. At this point, I wanted to patiently explain to her, so I called out 'Hello' three times to try to called her back. She turned around, clearly hearing me, but gave no response and just walked back to the front desk. The other guests present witnessed this.

We had just started eating some appetizers, so we immediately lost our appetite. We tried to complain but were told there was no manager available, so we directly asked another male server for the bill and left the restaurant, he apologized but no other action.

We’ve always apologized for wrong order foods and wasting food, but no stuff in the restaurant stood up for us. That server knew what happened but acted as if nothing was wrong, completely disregarding the customer's feelings. There was no management staff available to communicate with us either. This restaurant is not cheap for all you can eat, yet they treated a customer poorly over a plate of pork rice.πŸ˜“

I’ve been searching for a good AYCE sushi place in Houston, and after coming here, I will be going nowhere else! The atmosphere is nice- filled with modern decor and good conversation silenced only by the tasty sushi.

The rules for their AYCE dinner is a 90 minute time limit and no food waste. To address the two biggest concerns- the food came out FAST and was great quality. And of course, it was delicious! I really enjoyed the eel and yellowtail nigiri, as well as the Lake Charles Roll.

While the sushi was delicious, it was their service and honesty that has made me a loyal returning customer. I left an important ring at the table my first night. When I came back the next morning, worried, they immediately remembered before I said a word. I really appreciate the care they took with returning it to me.

Diego was amazing. So sweet, so chill, and just a very nice server. He made us laugh and gave us the rundown of the menu in a fast easy manner. This was our first time coming and it was really awesome. Food was fresh and came out quickly. Our server Zoe was very nice and bubbly. She was a hard charger taking care of everything like a boss. We had a few mishaps with some dishes but everything was corrected. We will definitely come back because the food was great. I gave 4 stars for atmosphere because I like dimmer, more romantic lightning. Parking is free and easy across the street, so that's good because downtown parking sucks. Will recommend to friends and family.

We have been here around 5 times in the last 6 months, the first 4 times we enjoyed the food, however, unfortunately we didn't have a good experience in the most recent visit. The Hibachi Beef was overcooked and we had to send it back. We noticed another table make the same complaint and had their dish remade. The Miso Soup was way too salty, and that is difficult to do. I did not finish it. Also that time, the Tuna and Pepper Tuna pieces tasted off as if it sat out too long. The Hamachi pieces were a weird dark meat fatty cut that did not taste good. We'll be taking a break from this place for a while and hope that they can rectify these deficiencies.

I’ve been to Kanau multiple times since they opened and each experience always ended the same. I’d have to chase down someone to grab me a drink, the customer service was terrible, they would rush through explaining the menu to me, the only time they would come to the table was to drop something off and run away. Never once have I been asked how my food was tasting, if I was doing alright, or if I needed anything.
I had a much different experience recently as my friend really wanted to go even though I was hesitant. I got a new server , Diego, whom I hadn’t seen before. He was lovely. He chatted with my friend and I about why we were out to lunch, if it was a special occasion, and made us feel so welcomed. The entire meal, start to finish, was delightful. Not only did he make us feel welcomed but not once did I ever have to ask for anything. Diego was on top of it and we will definitely be back to eat. Even on the busy weekends, I would wait longer just to get him.

So the first thing that popped out to me is how warm it was in the restaurant. it was almost the same temperature as it was that night and got more uncomfortable as we were there. The app ordering was a little odd especially with only being able to use one phone. The server was great handling the whole floor. The Food varied from great to lackluster. the sashimi seemed great. The Carpaccio was fantastic and I recommend it over the hibachi and skewers which were all tough. The hibachi stuff also had an excessive amount of onion. While they are very big on not wasting food they did not give me any problems not eating all of the onion. The tempura was good. The fried rice was okay but good use a few veggies IMO and consistency. The first bowl was fine but another bowl tasted of vinegar. The rolls were okay not great but not bad either. The fried oreos were quite rich but the green tea ice cream was subtle and a nice palate cleanser. I've been to better AYCE spots but this one is way closer.

The variety and the quality of sashimi and sushi they have definitely beyond what we paid for the price of all you can eat. Have perfect balance between authentic Japanese seafood and innovative creativity menu. Decoration gives a peaceful and calming vibe. Open kitchen showing all the kitchen staff practices high quality of hygiene during food preparation. The waiter Tiago demonstrates high level of professionalism explaining no bar tender on duty, offered alternative of ordering beers/sake/etc but also showing enthusiasm in attempt to make a cocktail as we ordered, not to mention his efficient and friendly service being the only waiter for the night with a full floor. We had an awesome dining experience. Thank you.

I am not one to leave a bad review, but I feel as though it should be a safety hazard eating at this restaurant. Not only is the fish horrible quality, which should not be expected from a β€œpremium quality” all you can eat restaurant, but the service is also terrible. I understand that it is an all you can eat restaurant and the whole purpose is for no food to go to waste, but when the food tastes so bad to the point where it’s not edible, how could we not waste the food. We were charged for the rolls that we physically could not eat because we were already feeling ill. On top of that, we were also charged for the shaggy dog roll where the shrimp still had the poop in it. We ended up spending 90 dollars because I tipped the waitress out of respect for her, but I seriously regret wasting my time and money. Honestly the thought of this meal makes me physically sick, please save your money and go somewhere else.

This is the worst overall sushi and all you can eat place I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to almost all of them in Houston). Not only is the food the worst I’ve eaten for sushi but the worst for an all you can eat place + service was not good and they were rude and passive aggressive. Menu is extremely small and price is just way too much for what it is ($37 for the smallest AYCE menu I’ve ever had, only 4 sparse pages, with drinks NOT included, and a few charges for sauce). You can drive 15 mins to waaayyy better AYCE sushi places that are actually worth it and way more fresh with better service. The only good thing worth noting is the decor. I thought that with very little variety, they would make the food VERY good and perfect what they do have on their menu, but I was sorely mistaken. Their pictures on their website are all inaccurate. Food presentation was sloppy.

All the food came out lukewarm and bland. They don’t even have masago anymore so their menu is outdated. Nothing really tastes fresh. Left the place feeling extremely nauseous.

Saw someone in the kitchen yawn and cough on their hands and didn’t wash their hands so kind of unsanitary too (reply to the response - no I did not see the person wear gloves)

All in all, this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in awhile. I was super excited to have a AYCE sushi place in the inner city but was thoroughly disappointed.

Calamari - bland and stringy, crunch was okay but flavorless
Any beef dish - super dry, rubbery (they tried telling me and my friends that the beef is supposed to be dry like that at all restaurants and we were baffled)
Spicy edamame - very bland, no flavor
Carpaccio - bland, just sour and a little spicy, very inaccurate pictures on their website
Maki - super basic and they load it up with tons of rice
Sashimi - just okay at best, not very fresh
Takoyaki - the only semi good thing here but the octopus inside was so brittle it wasn’t even chewy in some pieces
Eel nigiri - cold but good Smokey flavor, lots of rice though
Pork katsu - a normal katsu
Miso soup - feels like you’re drinking straight from the sea because it was extremely salty

I ate at the bar and I really like the vibe there. Things are clean and whatnot. The ordering system is really easy and it seems like a good way to have dinner with a group of friends here.

I think the food is as expected for the price. its 36 including sashimi for dinner. You get unlimited orders so that's great. The cuts are all good sizes. I didn't order any rolls because I wasn't too hungry. Some of the things related to the food I noticed was that the chef left the fish out as I got to the bar and was still left out when I left. My understanding is you shouldn't keep fish out for more than 2 hours. I would say I was there about 1.5hours. And because the quality/taste of the fish goes down as time goes on, it does impact the overall experience. Towards the end I did see they brought out more tuna for example but as I ate it, it was a bit too cold due to where it was stored likely.

Service is generally good, a little slow since it was peak hours. Its really hard to bring out sushi at the quality and speed. So my previous point probably is why they left out the fish. I ordered one of the beef items that ran out afterwards but I never got my order.

Came here with a friend for lunch and we decided to do the all you can eat for lunch.

We got a few appetizers, some sashimi & rolls. Honestly there wasn’t a single roll I didn’t like. Few of the rolls we loved were Houston star, Philadelphia, Fanin street $ guacamole roll. Everything tested extremely fresh and the presentation was beautiful. I didn’t get to take a picture of all the food we got because I was too busy eating it.

There is a lot across the street we parked at but there are also few street parking spots that were full we arrived at peak lunch time.

The servers were super attentive and we loved that our food was brought out as we ate. I can’t wait to be back when I’m in the area!

I was so excited to try this AYCE Sushi place. I drove 40 minutes into the city on a Wednesday night. Got here around 4:10 and there was only one other table.

I'll start with the Pros. The restaurant was decorated and designed very nicely. I like the look and chill ambient music playing. Bathroom has nice designs, was clean and smells very nice. Mirror was smart touch to turn on backlighting. I like that the service was fast but it was probably because they weren't busy. I like that you can scan a QR code on your phone, see the menu and order directly to the kitchen. As soon as you ordered, you can hear the receipt machine spit out a ticket. The squid salad good. The fried calamari was good.

Cons: Almost all the fish was super bland with the exception of the mackerel. I've tried many AYCE restaurants and the fish is the lowest quality fish I've ever had. The salmon almost didnt completely thaw as the center was still a bit icy. Presentation of the sashimi when it comes to the table is is cut up fish slices throw on a plate made of rock. There are no garnishes or special designs or bowls to brighten or live up the fish. The rice was regular cold hard white rice. Didn't have the taste of sushi rice at all and were almost undercooked. Sushi rice is supposed to be the most important ingredient. I avoided all the rolls after trying a nigiri with he rice they use. The crab salad was just imitation crab shredded up with no extra ingredients on top of a bowl of cucumber. The pork belly and beef skewers were extremely dry.

Side note: level of service from wait staff is between poor and medium. With the ability to order directly from your phone and pay the bill, interactions are just limited to them bringing you the food and taking away empty plates. My server also had earbuds in one ear while working. I get it's slow but very unprofessional.

At $36.95 per person for dinner is way overpriced for the quality of food they serve here. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an AYCE Sushi place.

Edit: Owner responds and says they don't know if it's the food or the service that I was dissatisfied with but I clearly wrote why in my review. It seems they only read the first paragraph of my review.

Wow! to say the least. Don't even get me started with this place. I saw it online and thought, "sure why not?!" But after trying the food here, I will NOT be coming back! The sashimi I ordered was thinly thinly sliced, and parts of the fish did not look good one bit. Sure enough, I got home that night and sicked everywhere on the floor! Do NOT ordered the sashimi, the fish was dead! And when I say dead, I mean dead in TASTE! Trust me, death does not taste good.... When it comes to scallops, I like mine soft with a gentle buttery flavor, but instead I got crunchy scallops with no buttery taste whatsoever! OUTRAGOUS FOOD QUALITY! This is a scam! A high quality, meticulous SCAM! You thought I was an easy target and tried to scam me!!! HAH!

I was pretty excited to try a premium all you can eat sushi place, but ended up being highly disappointed. The most disappointing part of the experience was the crunchy, undercooked sushi rice. It was probably some of the worst sushi rice I've ever eaten, and it made almost the entire menu difficult to eat. The best item was the salmon. It was soft and tender, and the eel was nicely toasted and seasoned. The service was quite fast, because there were only 3 other tables during dinner. Unfortunately, I wouldn't go back and I wouldn't recommend the place to others.

I will never go here back again, and will warn anyone from doing so. A business owner that says he'll put one of his own customers in the hospital due to the customer eating HIS food got sick is a business owner I will not support. That's disgusting. Not a way to run a business.
Final edit: If anyone in my family knows, I never waste food. Why don’t you ask the waitress if we wasted anything. I understand that you may be hurt by my negative impression, but I'm just telling you my experience. Your unprofessionalism is deeply disturbing.

I have never had an experience like this. From walking in it was so awkward. There was not a single customer in sight. They had like 10 workers. No one wanted to serve us. The guy was being very awkward. Barely saying any words. Told us we couldn’t order until our full table arrived or else our 90 minute timer would start. There was NO ONE else in the restaurant at all. Then when I asked about the premium menu he said the truck didn’t arrive for the premium fish and they didn’t have it on a Saturday for dinner…. Then when the owner talked to us he explained that they need an hour to defrost the premium fish because it’s in a super freezer. So they did have it. Then when our full table arrived we waited like 20 minutes and no one came to get our order or anything. It was just a terrible experience overall. We ended up leaving without anyone acknowledging us again.

The people in the past leaving negative reviews all sound very entitled. You can’t waste food and expect not to get charged. While there are other countries who don’t have the same luxury. Complaining about service taking long? Go to an upscale restaurant then. This is an ALL YOU CAN EAT. Especially with premium quality food. What more can you ask for? To purposely try and sabotage someone’s business all because you had to wait a few extra minutes is exactly what’s wrong with this country. A bunch of entitled whiney crybabies.

As for the food review: I loved the food that’s served. You really get your money’s worth and you can’t go wrong with high quality sushi for an attractive price.

Service: All the staff were friendly and made me feel welcomed. I have no complaints here. I’ll be coming back!

Great all-you-can eat experience! The service was great, and I especially liked the online ordering system. The volcano roll was a highlight for me because of the seared crawfish, definitely recommend getting that one! It basically works like this, you use a QR code to open the menu on your phone. You can then order the all you can eat dinner. Then you simply order food, sit back and enjoy. My daughter and I made a spontaneous stop because she was wanting sushi. We didn't try the all you can eat because we hadn't been there before and didn't know if we would eat enough. We did order a la carte and we were very pleased with the sushi although we didn't really care for the fried rice. The atmosphere was great! We will probably be back next time we're in the med center. If you can put away some sushi, the all you can eat seems like a decent deal.

My mom and I were looking for a place near her work and stumbled upon Kanau. Personally, thought there was an option for "All You Can Eat" and fine dining but it's just AYCE which isn't a problem because I eat a lot. Service was amazing. Ash was the host/waitress and did a phenomenal job explaining everything especially since it seemed she was running the whole restaurant herself. Jian, I believe one of the cooks?, was polite and friendly as well. Appreciate how he explained what dish was which since we ordered so much.

All and all, it's a AYCE. Reading some of these other reviews it's wild that they're expecting this to be like a Kata or Uchi. By far, one of the best AYCE sushi places I've been and will definitely come back. Some must orders: Takoyaki, Hama Chili, Beef Tataki, Gyoza and sounds crazy but their ice cream and fried Oreos are solid. Street parking is cheap as well only a couple bucks. Will definitely come back!

AYCE SUSHI. Food is very fresh and delicious. My favorite is the chili yellowtail appetizer & shrimp tempura was the freshest I have ever had. Reminds me of an Omakase feeling. Portions are small so don’t be afraid to order multiple. Nigiri & sashimi is small as well but still fresh and delicious. Only 1 server on Monday evening so she stays on her toes, with that being said put in next orders as soon as/ or even before you receive your dishes.
