Sushi Reviews
Sushi Experience №1

I went to Roka Akor to celebrate a very special night with my wife.
Starting off there were very few options for cocktails and the few there didn’t interested either one of us to even try one.
The appetizers were quick and tasty. The Beef Tataki with shaved black truffle was a must try. The presentation was a very nice touch as well. But that is where everything ends. We had 2 lobsters tails and they were just overcooked. It was a shame because the chili lime butter complemented it very nicely. We were excited to try the Japanese Mushroom Rice Hot Pot as we love the one from Uchi and Uchiko but this take on it was completely destroyed by the overwhelming ginger. It was just overpowered by the ginger to the point that my wife and I tasted nothing but it. We couldn’t even finish it, much less take it home. We ordered the Filet Mignon medium rare and it came out medium well. Eventually it came out the right temperature. The Truffle Aioli sauce complemented the Filet perfectly. Though, very oddly, even dealing the mishap with the steak having to wait further and almost having the entire dinner ruined as by that point we almost didn’t want the steak, it still wasn’t comped. Just a real icing to the cake to the bad experience. No bread before/with the steak was disappointing. We had 2 deserts. The Strawberry Yuzu Cheesechake and Ube custard. The Ube custard was very good. Very similar to a flan/pudding just a different take. I can’t say it’s better than a vanilla Flan/pudding. The strawberry Yuzu cheesecake though was again completely destroyed by the Yuzu. It was too tart and I love tartness more than anyone. Needs much much less. But the biggest let down of all was service. It was hands down the worst service I’ve ever had at a fine dining restaurant. We sat at the bar and the bartender didn’t do the bare minimum like keep waters filled and when I asked for some more water he brushed it off like I heard you but I’ll do that later. Minutes later the water was filled. Didn’t check up on us at all to the point that we had to get the attention of other servers. He was on his phone the entire night in front of us. He even rudely asked us to pick up the plates, put the smaller plates on top, and hand it to him.
When it came to the bill he just placed the bill on the table and didn’t say a word. No thanks for coming in, happy new year, hope you had/have a great night, nothing. Even walking away. He was passive aggressive the entire night. By far the absolute worst service I’ve ever had at a fine dining restaurant. Worst of all, I chose Roka Akor to celebrate a very special night.. my wife’s birthday.

Went for the second night in a row to indulge in the 2 for $99 dinner menu. Upon asking the waitress why we didn’t have that menu after being seated, I was only given the $100 per person “Roka Giveback Menu”. I asked about the promotion I received the prior night only to be told that they discontinued it and replaced it with the more expensive menu. I was disappointed, but continued on with the new menu. After doing research and realizing the 2 for $99 menu was still on the website, I asked again politely to check and make sure that it wasn’t still active and was told the website was incorrect. Almost towards the end of the courses, the waitress informs me that it was a miscommunication within their team and they in fact were continuing the promotion as listed on the website and that I could “come back and ask for the 2 for $99 dinner menu”. That was my entire point for visiting the restaurant and I also bragged to my business partner about how amazing that specific menu was (items were different than the new menu). I was caught off guard and felt like I was brushed off, no concessions or accommodations made. Not a good look from one of my fav restaurants. I won’t be back for a while—super disappointed guest.

Theo, the manager, truly made our experience a 10/10 with his attentive service and insightful recommendations. His passion for hospitality made our evening unforgettable.
He ensured my mom's birthday dinner was truly special, making her first sushi experience a delightful one.

Overall, Roka Akor is a must-visit for anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience.

We look forward to returning to try the Happy Hour specials!

We dined here a couple of weeks ago – sorry it took me so long to post - however there’s still time to enjoy the HRW menu at Roka Akor. We were with a large group and they served us family style so the photos may not reflect individual portion sizes. We enjoyed many of the items here. The fish and steak originally came out overcooked, but they were quickly replaced and the black cod was everything I had wanted it to be (it’s one of my favourite foods). The steak was great however, the black was exceptional (the lamb was also great). We had different opinions on our favourite appies and desserts which shows they can make multiple things well.

Came back here for HRW. Reservation is recommended. You can park in the garage on the retail spaces for free. We opted for dinner and got to try almost everything on their HRW menu.

For the starters, each person will get to try all three appetizers which I thought was nice. The yellowtail sashimi was my favorite out of the three but Wagyu beef and kimchi dumplings and spicy tuna maki roll were also delish. A great way to start off dinner.

For the entrees, you get to pick one out of the three choices. Everything was served with a side of grilled potatoes.

- Yuzu miso marinated black cod: cod was cooked to perfection and the yuzu miso sauce was the star of this dish
- Prime NY short steak: great portion and the meat was very tender
- Korean spiced lamb chops: medium rare was a great option and the eggplant sauce really pulled it together

For desserts, my favorite was the Ube custard. It was light and airy. The sorbet was good but I'm not a huge fan of sorbet. Chocolate cake was also good but eating it with the vanilla ice cream helps balanced out the sweetness. Overall, a great option for HRW.

Went here for my birthday. The summer sushi experience at $49/person was pretty good but not very filling so you may want to order more stuff on the menu. The Houston restaurant week menu included tuna maki sushi, sashimi, dumplings and the choice of either steak or lamb chops which were pretty good. My favorite of dessert was the Ube custard dessert because it was so delicious and hit the spot. They will give you a free green tea custard and pink sparkling water for your birthday. Highly recommend this restaurant!

FYI, free parking on second floor

Sushi Experience №30

My wife and I have been here at least once a year for last 2-3 years, and have had great food, service and experience. We came here this last Saturday evening because I wanted it again for my birthday. It was by far the worst experience at a nice upscale restaurant.

I made reservations for a table for 2 July 29th, and was seated at the sushi bar. We weren't comfortable with that so we requested to sit at the bar since the restaurant was busy .

The bartender was extremely busy being the only bartender at the restaurant for the whole bar. He quickly grabbed our orders made our drinks and put in the order. He asked if there was anything else we needed before he moved onto serving the rest of the restaurant, and I asked for water which we never got. No big deal.

We ordered the Yellowtail Sashimi with ponzu, a few nigiri pieces, and the Japanese Mushroom Rice hot pot with shaved truffle. The food did come out very quickly. The cold plate appetizer fish was warm and the fish did not taste fresh at all. The nigiri pieces also came warm and the fish did not taste fresh, and was missing flavor and depth to it. The Japanese mushroom rice pot just didn't taste well at all either. We have had all of these dishes before at Roka and it tasted delicious, but this this time it was a disappointment.

Seemed to be like their quality/consistency has gone down since it is restaurant week, and they're just throwing food out without quality control. We got our checks, paid, and ended up going to get pizza nearby.

Fried Tofu with Avocado Relish 5/5 So good! Watch out on your first bite because it can be hot!

Summer Sushi Experience 5/5 Not a bad deal for $49/person

Prime NY Strips 5/5 I couldn’t eat raw and they managed to make it tasty for me

Brussel Sprouts 3/5 Not bad but too salty for me

Banana Matcha Pudding 4.5/5 The cream and the sago match well with the pudding but the banana was weird. It was neither crispy nor soft but somewhere in the middle. Red bean would have paired well.

We were craving sushi and decided to give a new place we haven’t been a try! From a sushi lover that always dine out in sushi places, the sushi rolls were so delicious! my favorite was the Snow Crab Truffle and the Seared Escolar and Prawn Tempura, i put the names in the pictures so you guys can know what you're ordering, but if you order all of these rolls as in the picture you’re set! very fresh

For appetizers order the tuna tacos, and the sweet corn. and can’t go wrong with some spicy edamame jaja

All three small plates and 5 rolls were 140 so it was a really really good price

I put a 4/5 in the atmosphere because although it was a very nice and chill environment, there was a funky smell like when you fry foods and it stays, i texted them about it because it was bad to a point it got stuck on our clothes and hair. but hopefully i was just the day we went

We’ve been to this restaurant two times and will not be back for a third. My only issue with our experience came down to allergies. As soon as we were served our first steak I told the waiter my wife is very allergic to the greens they were garnishing our steaks with. She has a severe contact allergy.

My wife’s steak comes out a couple of minutes later with no garnish, and she immediately starts having a reaction after her first bite. The staff simply replated and removed the greens from the top. We paid over $300 for a meal that gave my wife an allergic reaction.

It’s pathetic that a restaurant would scrape off an allergen and reserve it to a customer, and we were lucky that we did not have to go to the emergency room.

If you have any food allergies, do not go to this restaurant.

Starting from our server until we took the last bite of our dessert, RA made sure to give us a memorable experience and left us wanting for more! Every dish we ordered tasted delicious, but this review would be incomplete if I don't mention their signature dishes: Yuzu Miso Marinated Black Cod In Magnolia Leaf (main), Sweet Corn (side) and their dessert, Ube Custard with Fresh Fruit.

Not only once to get a drink or even order our main dishes. She was too busy, management was great and we did make him aware of the situation. First receipt we got was without tip. So we assumed that was the total. In the end card was ran and tip was included for 20%. NOT OK. Next time just include it in the main bill. We would be aware. Be aware that a bill over 400 will automatically include a tip after they run your card.
We will def come again ,yet Lorena could improve her attitude and service skills , specially if you are spending so much money in a place.

I chose Roka Akor for my birthday dinner and Roka Akor did not disappoint. I was pleasantly surprised to see 40- and 20-year port on their menu and I enjoyed a glass of each. I ordered the Japanese styled fried chicken - chefs kiss! We shared the brussel sprouts - this ranks amongst the best I've had. My husband ordered steak and loved it so much he finished it and ordered *another* meat dish (which he also enjoyed). Our waiter was very detail oriented, taking the time to make sure my gluten sensitivity was covered and being swift in her service but not at all in a "I'm sooo busy" kind of way. More so in a "I'm here and I want to give you space to enjoy yourselves". I like how the restaurant looks - clean and almost minimilist. Parking is very easy as well.
Overall, we will be back in the near future!

Absolutely loved our experience here! Between the food, service and ambiance, we couldn't decide which we liked best because all were fantastic! Had a reservation and were seated right away. Our server Yari was sweet, made suggestions and was always readily available as we ordered in stages. The manager Andrew came by to greet us and saw us looking at the wine list and sent over their Sommelier Ricky who suggested a lovely, bold Cab to go with our dinner. We ordered several plates to share, and the standouts were the Wagyu Beef/Kimchi Dumplings, Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice (suggestion from Andrew and loved by all), Seared Salmon/Unagi roll, Seared Escolar/Prawn Tempura roll and Glazed Baby Back Pork Ribs! All of us agreed that these were 5 star dishes and would order them again and again. We finished off our meal with an assortment of sorbets (Coconut Yuzu was the fave) and it was the perfect, yet light, end to a lovely meal. Looking forward to coming back soon!

Tonight we ventured to Roka Akor for our dinner to celebrate our anniversary. It was exciting as with the anticipation ion to dine at this establishment was built up by the difficulty to get a reservation on peak nights, the extensive and expensive cost of placing said reservation, and the highlighted high end item on the menu.

Roka Akor is a high end Japanese steakhouse chain with 6 locations across the country starting in AZ and making its way to Houston where we had the opportunity for to dine with them. It seem to have been nominated for many accolades so a high bar was set from the very beginning.

Upon arrival parking is either self parking or valet which was nice to have the option. We elected to self park and found that the elevator was broken in the garage. Having our reservation it was a quieter night in the restaurant being a Sunday evening and were Quickly shown to our table. The staff was friendly and inviting as we made our way in.

The aesthetic inside was modern and a little bit simple and minimalist, dimly lit except for the glow of the light coming from the open kitchen space. It was a bit unfortunate having the lighting so dim as it made for poor pictures and just felt a little dark as we were also seated in a back corner regardless of the restaurant being hot so busy and having a reservation. The ambiance coming from the music was also an interesting selection of 2015 style electric pop which was definitely it what I was thinking upon previous research. We came dressed in slightly dressed attire and quickly found that other coming in were only wearing hoodies and sports jerseys so there’s low to no dress expectation.

The service throughout our evening was constant and attentive. Our server was friendly, but a little bit too overbearing. A complaint I noticed from other reviews is that the check came at an inconvenient time in the meal near their end before they were finished and the same happens for us which was a little odd, but whatever.

We started with drinks, ordering the Beautiful Person and a Passing flame. Both were very nice cocktails, well balanced having good flavors and not being too strong or too sweet.

For starters we ordered the Robata Scallops and the Robata Octupus. The scallops were very good. 2 large scallops well cooked, so soft and tender, and very well seasoned. The octopus being one of my favorite things in the world was also pretty good, though a little tough, but nicely cooked.

For our main we had the Korean spiced lamb chops, the Hamachi and Serrano roll, and the soft shell crab and kimchi roll. This was a fairly disappointing part of the meal. The lamb chops came heavily charred while cooked to our requested medium-rare, but with no seasoning or flavor to them other than than of grill and the bare meat. It came with a bowl of Korean bbq sauce but was not really something I would come to expect from a restaurant like this. This was little more than something that could be prepared on a home grill and a bit of a let down. It came with cucumber slices coated in a smoked eggplant sauce, but again was a bland accompaniment.

The rolls also were disappointing with both having what felt like overcooked rice being a bit too mushy. Overall they were pretty generic rolls which didn’t stand out, and we would probably have been far better off avoiding them and having sushi elsewhere.

For dessert we finished off with a baked green tea custard which was a very nice, gentle dessert to finish with. It wasn’t too sweet and had a very nice flavor and texture for the custard.

Overall our trip was a bit of a let down. There were some nice flavors and good food, but overall the meal is not one I would repeat. Houston has so many better places for sushi for a much better value (definitely try Koi), and high quality steakhouses are a dime a dozen in this city. I don’t recommend coming here and paying the top prices for a very mid meal with no promise of any experience.

Overpriced Americanized Japanese food. We ordered chef's selection nigiri, veggie tempura and another dish I can't remember. The coating on tempura was so thick and not crispy, when done right, the coating should be light and airy on tempura. one or two pieces in my nigiri selection didn't taste good at all. I would not recommend this place.

This restaurant has an amazing service and good atmosphere. Is a good restaurant but not top. If you want to invest $$$$ in a top experience go to MAD, Mastro's or even a place like Uchi. Quality of food vs price don't worth the investment here. In what world a place that sells A5 Japanese Steaks, you order a medium or medium rare steak and you receive a rare/ blue?. The way you order a steak impacts the experience. About sushi, go to a place like Matsu Restaurant, that is cheap, but great quality... Even sashimi on top of ice taste amazing, nothing cold, and you can tell the quality and taste is better and don't feel it cold at all vs Roka, that supposedly is fresh but is really cold, smell and taste are regular or poor.

Excellent date night experience on a Sunday night for our anniversary. Everything we ordered was delicious, with just the right amount of guidance from our absolutely amazing and warm and friendly and knowledgeable server Molly! Food highlights were the pork belly, Wagyu filet and sirloin, and the chocolate cake and cheesecake. We would definitely return.
Atmosphere was great with nice ambiance and decor, and good music at a nice volume to still comfortably have conversation. If there’s live music on some/any nights that would be also enhance the experience

I came here once in 2019 and again a couple of weeks ago in July. I'm pretty sure management or the chef has changed because I got the omakase both times and the dishes were almost the same but the first time was amazing and this time was rather disappointing. I do not think the omakase is worth $350. The crab dish they used to have is also gone from the omakase. There was something wrong with almost every course. The mussels were quite sandy. One dish was too salty. The mushroom risotto was overcooked and mushy. For $350 I expect much higher quality.

Bait and switch on Omakase. Husband planned a nice Omakase dinner for four for my bday. We upgraded 2 dishes to the Kobe beef and crab in legs instead of lobster and regular steak. We never received the crab legs nor the lobster, we were told by wait staff that the sea bass which was bad and had a bad flavor was exchanged out for the lobster and crab legs. We paid an additional $170 for the Kobe and crab upgrade and $150 for each Omakase per person. Wasabi was not real fresh grated wasabi as told by wait staff-it was a blend of horseradish and preserved wasabi. I ordered a Dassi unfiltered sake and given something else instead. Really disappointed with the service and will NEVER return. Be aware if you upgrade your Omakase, they might replace what was promised to week old sea bass that wasn't of good quality.

Most excellent place to dine like in Tokyo but without having to travel that far. Enjoyed the Wagyu beef Gunkan, the Robata Grilled Scallops, the Robata Grilled Pork Belly (my favorite), and the Lobster and Shrimp Dumplings. For the Main course we had the Prime N.Y. Strip, the 5-piece Sashimi plate (delicious!), and the Unagi Nigiri (yummy!). Excellent wine pairings and top service from Jorge. Overall, a most satisfying experience. Will definitively come back for the Omakase experience.

EVERYTHING was amazing and perfectly delicious! Food, service atmosphere! Best high end restaurant that my boyfriend and have been to in Houston! Every dish was high quality and cooked and seasoned to perfection. The sauces are innovative and pair perfectly with each dish. Some are a twist on traditional sauces, others different but delicious such as the sauce for the flat iron steak with the raw egg yolk. We were going to order the Omakase and the chef was willing to accommodate our dietary restrictions, but since we had too many we didn’t want to trouble the chef and just ordered off the menu. Our server was also very knowledgeable about each dish

The vegetable tempura was very light and crisp without much seasoning which was perfect with the dipping sauce that had peppercorns and a little bit of spice in it. The salmon flight of sushi was delicious as was the premium toro sashimi. The mushroom rice hotpot was more like a thick congee that got better the longer it sat on the table. I recommend having jt served early, but then let it sit for 10-15 minutes for the flavors to really permeate the rice. The pork belly was so yummy with the miso based sauce as was the Brussel sprouts.

We went for our 2 year Anniversary and they took note of that in the reservation and provided us with complimentary dessert from the menu and toasting beverage (they would have given us Champagne if we drank alcohol, but we don’t). That was the best lava cake I’ve ever had. Flemings could learn a few things! I loved how it mastered all the different textures with crispy rice balls and soft cake exterior with chocolate flowing through when you break it open. The almonds and the coconut ice cream paired perfectly. We were so full from all the food we ordered that we almost didn’t accept the complimentary dessert, but we are so glad that we did! We would totally order everything that we ate again!

Given BAD LOBSTER for a $250 Omakase experience.
I would NOT recommend this restaurant. I received spoiled lobster and spent the rest of my night throwing up and in extreme pain. The first bite, I knew it didn't taste right. I have had lobster many times and this tasted BAD, I swallowed the one bite and did not touch the lobster for the rest of the meal. Minutes after leaving the restaurant, I couldn't keep it down and threw up nearly all of my meal in the bushes. I eat seafood all the time and have never had this experience so it was clearly something to do with the lobster going bad.

Being served bad seafood will obviously ruin the night, but the Omakase experience sub par to begin with. No one came to give us water, menus, etc. for 15 minutes after being seating and I even had to ask the waiter if he was our waiter since we had not been given a menu, confirmation that we would be served Omakase, asked about dietary restrictions, or anything! I am pescatarian and asking for a pescatarian Omakase option (at a sushi option) seemed like the biggest inconvenience.

Food-wise, everything (apart from the Lobster) tasted fine but was not impressive. If you are given fine lobster, it would be a good meal but not worth the money. In my case, certainly a disappointing experience

Chose this spot on TikTok and thought it would be a great choice for my bday. I went with 3 of my friends and was initially surprised that the hostess at the front was so rude. She didn’t greet us, just looked at me, and when she seated our group, she didn’t say a word or smile. Cruella Deville vibes.

The food was tasty. Tried quite a few different flavors. Small amounts, but to be expected. Cool ambience and our waitress was pleasant. The dessert was on the house for my birthday which was nice considering our bill was around $250.

Overall, a nice spot for a dinner date.

Roka Akor always delivers when you are there. Awesome food, service and atmosphere. I also think they have very reasonable prices for the quality you get.

This was our first time for happy hour and it was a really good time. You can also order any other favorites off the menu. The lounge was a cool setting and I felt the service was just as top notch.

For food we tried a bunch of things on and off the HH menu. The rolls to me are so nice because they are simple, with very fresh fish, but not basic. Nothing we had was bad and we look forward to our next visit!

I’ve been wanting to review Roka Akor for a long while now. Boy was it worth tr wait. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, the service was the best I’ve ever had, and the food was amazing.
Get the bone marrow! The sushi is, of course, fantastic, but so is the other things. We got COD and Lamb from the special menu. Drink pea rings, and an order of bone marrow and sushi. All said and done, with tip, we walked out only spending $200 for an extremely nice evening.

Excellent experience. Nicely appointed decor, comfortable seating & good lighting. Nicely prepared dishes with well platted presentations. Tried several saki options which were all clean, smooth & high quality. I was most impressed about their 2 inch cube ice, which remained rock solid & clear as glass in my Old Fashioned long after the whiskey was gone. Our server, Marino, who was super knowledgeable about the foods & drinks, said they have their ice brought in by an ice company. C'est Manifique! The servers were all in black, which was classic. My only "designer suggestion" is that their belts should also all be consistent. A nicely understated Ferragamo with wood grain on the logo would be just the right amount of a finishing touch. Price point is high, but acceptable.

Three of us went to dinner at Roka Akor in Houston, this past week. We all love sushi and Roka Akor came highly recommended.
When we arrived for dinner, we asked to sit at the sushi bar….conversing with the chef is almost always fun. And this was no exception!
Our waitress, Michelle took our drink orders and gave us plenty of time to peruse the sushi menu. Thete is a lot to choose from. We requested that most choices be sashimi (no rice) but my son also ordered a sushi roll (which he loves) during our meal. We asked the head chef (Howard) and his associate (Nick) to set us up with a plate of sashimi that included three fish of their choice. The first plate was all white fish and they were all delicious…apologies that I don’t remember all of the fish selected. We asked Howard to select the next plate and at least one of them was barracuda. The fish just kept getting better and better.
The third plate had various levels of tuna; gorgeous side meat moving to an oilier but magnificent belly cut. Wowser!
My wife and I took a break while my son ate a spicy nagiri roll with rice. He is not a teenager but can eat like one.
After that, we were all getting full but thought there might be room for dessert, or maybe something else? There was a choice for a tender piece of wagyu beef. Something sweet or extraordinary beef…we chose the beef. It was lightly seared and then cut into pieces for all three of us to try. An awesome finish to a magnificent meal.
We all highly recommend Roka Akor in Houston along with sitting at the sushi bar.
