Uchi, "house" in Japanese, is founded by James Beard Award-winning Chef Tyson Cole. A delicate balance of elevated food and impeccable service, Uchi offers non-traditional Japanese cuisine with signature tastings, sushi, and seasonal omakase.
SO COOL. We took my brother here for his birthday, he LOVES seafood and said it was a 10/10. We literally got to cook our own stake on a little hot rock. So cool and the waiters are awesome and sweet. And the desserts Ooooooooo don’t get me started, absolutely amazing 10/10 would recommend

Clearly the best restaurant experience I had in Houston. The food is literally amazing and includes a large variety of freshly prepared traditional Japanese dishes. The sake and wine list is very extensive as well. The staff is outstanding - nice, eager to help, polite, and friendly. Overall, I had a delightful dinner!

One of my favorite Japanese fusion places in h-town. I like the fact that their menu has both "core" dishes that have been there since they opened and new dishes over time. Fried milk is my favorite dessert there. It's the same dish but it has always felt like a new dish every year. They have very creative chefs there who know how to keep the same dishes over time but not getting boring.

God I love Uchi. I lived in Austin for over a decade and only went to that location once. Just before I moved back to Houston. When I finally got around to going to the old Felix Cantina location on Westheimer I was smitten. The fish couldn’t be any fresher even if you filleted the fish right there on the boat. The flavor combinations and textures are music in my mouth. You can close your eyes and point at the menu and always end up with something so delightful you might just order it again in the same sitting. And the manager, Joy, who was appropriately named at birth — we just love her. There’s sushi, then there’s Uchi. Treat yourself to the difference. You’re worth it.

Uchi is renowned for its exceptional omakase experience. The skilled chefs present the “Chef’s Tasting”; a carefully curated selection of sushi, highlighting the finest flavors and textures. Each dish is a testament to the restaurant's dedication to quality and culinary artistry, making it a standout destination for sushi enthusiasts seeking a refined dining experience.
Helpful Tip! Making a reservation, communicating allergies, and exploring different courses with sake or wine pairings can enhance your experience. Checking the website for updated operating hours and course details is a smart move. Enjoy your dining experience!

This was a rather disappointing experience. After a lot of research, we decided to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary at Uchi. We ordered two Omakase, priced at $198 per person, excluding tax and tip. The meal included a total of 10 courses, including dessert. We love Omakase and have had it many times, and while the sushi here was decent, none of it really impressed me, and I don’t feel it was worth $198. Can you believe that the items in my photos cost $400, excluding tax?
When we were seated, I told the server that we were here to celebrate our 11th anniversary, but when the dessert arrived, there wasn’t even a bit of decoration. At other places, they usually write something like “Happy Anniversary” and even offer to help take a photo. I left a $100 tip, but none of these thoughtful touches were provided. I won’t be coming back.

Great food and atmosphere. The hostesses at the front are a little snotty. But once you get past them everything is superb. I would make sure to always have a reservation. Do not come here without a reservation as there is nowhere to sit if you have to wait for a table.

This was the most phenomenal sushi I ever experienced. Slight twist on traditional with some ingredients like cilantro. I really enjoyed the mushroom bowl with wagyu.
Desserts were also very tasty.
We had one roll that wasn't to our liking. The server was kind enough to take it off our bill because we didn't finish it. That was very kind, and generous. Everything else we had was truly spectacular.
Service was surprisingly fast considering the nature of the dishes, made to order.
Next time I would do a reservation because we sat at the sushi bar, but a table would be nice too.
Definitely will be back. Parking was paid parking down the street underground. There was no available street parking unfortunately but that's Rice Village on Thursday night.

Had omakase here and instantly became a fan. Awesome experience, ambience, and service. Would def come back!
Came back and was significantly disappointed with the service. Waited 15 min past the reservation time for our seats only to be told they messed up and have a different kind of seating available. We hesitantly took it and then we waited another 10 minutes just to get water. When it didn’t arrive, we got up and left
Came back another time and had a really pleasant experience. We arrived at 4 on Saturday which is when they open so service was likely materially better due to the restaurant being mostly empty. We got the following, with asterisks to indicate what we enjoyed.
- Sake Crudo
- Hama Chili Crudo
- Medai Crudo*
- Brussel Sprouts*
- Kinmedai Nigiri
- Masu Nigiri
- Kanpachi Nigiri*
- Shima Aji Nigiri*
- Engawa Nigiri*
- Bluefin Akami Nigiri
- Bluefin Chutoro Nigiri*
- Bluefin Otoro Nigiri*
- Sake Toro Nigiri*
- Kinoko Nigiri
- A5 Nigiri*
- Spicy Crunchy Tuna Maki Roll*

Celebrated our wedding anniversary here. From the hostess, to our server, to the sushi chef (sat at the sushi counter) we were given top notch service - going above and beyond. Highly recommend the satsuma and kara kyuri cocktails, the strawberry spritz and lime yuzu cocktails, the hirame and hama chili cold dishes, the a5, madai, and masu nigiri, and lastly the fried milk and jasmine cream desserts. The nigiri and dessert choices are absolute must haves. Definitely would go again, perhaps for happy hour.

Uchi never disappoints when we want good quality Japanese food that is vegetarian/vegan friendly. There are a few things that we always order and then leave it up to our waiter/waitress to bring us whatever that is vegan.
How we celebrated our early Valentine's. I was so full from all the delicious food and it was worth my food belly.
ETA 10/19/23 - we're back! we've been celebrating our anniversary here for the last several years, it's tradition now. We ordered our usual and had the fried ice cream and lime pie. So so good!!
ETA 1/20/24 - we've been coming here for a while and feel like the service and food quality has gone down a bit. There was some sort of mix-up and our table was given to another party. When we were finally seated we were given the regular menu which we thought was strange because we noted in our reservation that we're vegetarian and usually get the vegetarian menu. They also stopped offering sparkling water. Instead they'll sell you a bottle of Pellegrino. Service from the waiters/waitresses have been hit or miss. Food quality is not what it used to be. Don't get me wrong, it's still good just not at the level it once was. Although some of these things may not be that big of a deal, it's the small details like these that made them stand out for us and kept us coming back. We'll be back with a different level of expectation.

I usually refrain from leaving negative reviews, but my recent visit to Uchi left much to be desired. Excited to try a new sushi place, I regret trusting the glowing Google reviews. The experience was disappointing, with service and hygiene falling seriously short of expectations.
Upon arrival, I was surprised to see a waiter wearing shorts, which didn’t set a professional tone. At the sushi bar, a chef was handling caviar and sauces with bare fingers—no gloves in sight. As for the bar, the bartender kept swiping surfaces while preparing our drinks, which seemed unhygienic.
We ordered edamame and two sushi rolls, hoping for a delightful culinary experience. Shockingly, our first roll arrived in just one minute. It was the most unappealing sushi I've ever tasted, both in flavor and presentation. To make matters worse, I had to request soy sauce, wasabi, and ginger separately due to their absence, marking a significant lapse in serving basics.
The service lacked attentiveness, and the food presentation was subpar. Observing the staff, I noticed a waitress openly enjoying her soup at the bar and another applying lipstick in front of customers. Having worked in high-end restaurants myself, witnessing such a disregard for basic service etiquette and common sense was frustrating.
Here's a photo of our food. Despite our hunger, we forced ourselves to eat, jokingly telling ourselves it might boost our immune systems. I sincerely hope we don’t fall ill!
Overall, I cannot recommend this place to anyone based on this experience. There are fundamental service standards that this restaurant simply did not meet.

Asked the server for recommendations. She recommended something with nachos. Almost had nothing on the nachos. And it costs >$24. I’d pay that if the food was worth it. Nope, just a very poor recommendation. Way OVERPRICED for the portion. Sushi isn’t any out of the world for the price. We spent $200 and had to end up eating at home again. Not worth it and not coming back!

The fish was fresh, but some dishes were overwhelmed by the sauce, which I personally do not prefer. I really enjoyed their sashimi. Dessert wasn't that great imo. Customer service was better than most restaurants but I still felt a bit of a rush from the server. For the price, probably wouldn't go back.

Been going here since they opened in Houston and my wife and I very first date was uchi Austin before they opened up elsewhere. How this place doesn't have 5 stars is beyond me. They are the best sushi in town by far. Topn3 in the country, if not my #1. Service is top shelf and the nigiri, crudos, and hot food are all made with careful creativity and science in each bite. I have brought so many guest to uchi and converted so many non sushi eaters. I found myself writing a review because a certain group decided to protest uchi (ahem PETA), about the serving of foie gras. The foie gras nigiri is the best piece of foie gras I've ever tasted in this entire country. I've shown this piece off to do many guests and it's a legendary piece that should never leave the menu and never had, until now. PETA, the protest is useless. You are really bothering other peoples lives. Any animal product we eat isn't really humane, so might ss well protest the entire meat market. There are so many restaurants that serve fooe gras but you want to pick on uchi. We can fight over this, meet me outside, leave uchi alone. And uchi, please bring this piece back, this really changes the dynamic of who you are. I don't have that glorifying nigiri to show off to my guest and have them put it on their mouths and close this eyes as you see them walk through paradise for the first time. Big shout out to the amazing service staff over there, Anthony, Karen, sohan, nick, Hudson, i know im forgetting some, all management and chef staff as well. Yall are rock stars and still keep uchi as my #1 sushi restaurant in the country. I've been to Michelin star places and they really got nothing on you all. Please bring back foie or i can already see myself coming less

Such a cute restaurant with amazing ambiance. This was recommended by a friend and didn’t disappoint at all.
The food was fantastic and innovating and our server Michaela recommended the best dishes. She was great, and knew the menu so well.
It was prompt without feeling rushed and even though they don’t have a full bar the sake cocktails were spectacular.
One of the best parts is every team member that brought food, filled water, or removed plates was kind and courteous.
10 out of 10 recommend.

Yesterday we dined here and while the service was exceptional, there were notable issues with the kitchen.
The service was flawless—our waitress was professional, kind, and knowledgeable about the dishes. She did a fantastic job explaining the menu and making us feel welcome throughout the evening. However, the problem lay in the timing and composition of the dishes coming from the kitchen.
Unfortunately, the dishes arrived out of sequence, leading to an uneven dining experience. For instance, the first dish that was served to us was kobo meat, which has a strong, meaty, and fatty flavor. Following this, we received delicate live fish dishes, which should have come earlier.
Additionally, there were significant delays between courses, with some dishes taking a very long time to arrive. We eventually had to cancel one of the dishes altogether due to the wait. It’s unclear whether this was an off night or a recurring issue, but it detracted from the overall experience.
We were also disappointed to learn that despite having cocktails listed on the menu, there was no bar service available—only wine, beer, and sake.

Uchi in Montrose is my favorite spot for sushi in Houston. It started in Austin, Texas, and has more than earned its reputation. It’s definitely a splurge, but worth every dollar. Sitting at the bar during Social Hour (Uchi’s Happy Hour) is the way to go. You get a taste of their best dishes at a discount, and chatting with Koi, one of the talented sushi chefs, is always a plus – she makes ma feel at home in my neighborhood spot.
The service is spot-on, and the attention to detail in every dish is next level. Uchi uses authentic ingredients and brings them together with creativity and beautiful presentation. They care about the whole experience, from taste to aesthetics, making every visit memorable. Whether you’re new to sushi or a pro, Uchi delivers.

My visit to Uchi Houston was an exceptional culinary experience that exceeded expectations, a true 5 star establishment. The variety of flavors and textures across the dishes made for a truly memorable meal.
We started with the **Steak Tartar**, which was beautifully presented and had a delicate balance of flavors. The meat was tender, and the seasoning was subtle yet impactful, allowing the richness of the beef to stand out. The dish was fresh and well-executed, making for a perfect beginning to the meal.
Next, we had the **Cauliflower Tempura**, which was crispy, light, and flavorful. The batter was airy and not too heavy, letting the natural flavor of the cauliflower shine through. The accompanying dipping sauce added just the right amount of tang and spice to elevate the dish.
The **Fatty Tuna Nigiri** was a highlight of the meal. The fish was incredibly fresh, with the fatty tuna melting in your mouth. It was simple yet decadent, showcasing the quality of the ingredients that Uchi is known for.
The **Hot Rock Wagyu** was a fun and interactive dish. We cooked the thin slices of wagyu on a hot stone, and each piece was perfectly tender with a rich, buttery flavor. The searing process allowed us to control the cook, adding a touch of novelty to the dining experience while enhancing the wagyu's natural richness.
Lastly, we had the **Scallops**, which were beautifully seared with a caramelized exterior and soft, tender interior. The dish was well-seasoned and balanced with just the right amount of acidity to cut through the richness of the scallops.
Overall, Uchi Houston delivered an outstanding meal with impeccable service and an inviting atmosphere. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted and executed, with attention to flavor and presentation. I would highly recommend Uchi for anyone looking to indulge in high-quality, innovative Japanese cuisine.

Houston has some of the most amazing and diverse food options. Having lived in Houston as well as SF and NYC, I've enjoyed various cuisines and dining experiences, but UCHI is by far one of my favorites! If we're lucky enough to get seated in NICK'S section, we always leave it up to him to create the best SOMAKASE menu. He has impeccable taste and ensures that our meal is well-balanced. We get a taste of their best meat, fish, hot, cold, savory and sweet dishes. Some of our favorite dishes include: hirame usuzukuri, kinoko nabe w/ egg yolk, muki-hotate gunkan, kinoko + caviar, lobster makimono, hama chili, and fried milk. We always leave with full bellies. Uchi is worth every penny!

So I been going to Uchi for past 5 years, we come here for a lot special occasions, bdays, anniversary, graduation, confirmations, etc so we tried many different dishes and dessert. my family loves and I always looking forward to finish my meal with my favorite dessert in the world and guess what was discontinue when I went there 10/25/2023, it was my freakin favorite dessert..Jasmine Cream!!! I cant freakin believe it! My husband and I always rave about this dessert from the freshness, crunchiness, tart, all that combine makes an very exceptional dessert that stands out from all the upscale places we have been to. So to say we were highly disappointed with their change in dessert menu, is an understatement. I cant see us coming back there until our dessert return to their menu and thats the main reason why they get one star!
Update: 7/28/2024 They bought the jasmine cream back !!!!! 5 stars now!!

I recently went to Uchi for my birthday with my husband and we ordered the somakase and chef’s tasting. Because of this specific order our waiter suggested that we would get a chef’s tasting but with some variations which we appreciated.
The food was very tasty though I don’t really think Uchi is a just a Japanese restaurant, I would think it’s more of a fusion considering the spices and way of cooking of nigiri and sashimi. It is of my opinion that nigiri and sashimi is fresh and served on ice. The sashimi that was served to us may have been poached or steamed, I’m not sure since this was not explained upon receiving our dish. The nigiri in the other hand was cooked in lime/lemon juice with jalapeño or other hot peppers/spices.
With all this being said the food was very good and surprisingly prepared, needless to say my tastebuds were happy. However the Wagyu beef was not the best I’ve had, I think there is a lot of place for improved. I feel raw Wagyu should be cooked by the server at the table so that the meat doesn’t accidentally get overcooked by the consumer and gets wasted.
As for dessert I had the seasonal sorbet and that was amazing one of the best sorbets I’ve eaten.
Now to my server, she was very nice and even gave me a dedicated dessert at the end since it was my birthday. However, I would preferred if the other servers would have taken their time at explaining the dish and not have rush out as soon as the food was placed on the table. Another thing is that there were 20 minutes wait at the beginning and in the middle not sure why, maybe it’s because it was a Saturday.

Husband and I were celebrating our anniversary. We ordered the omakase. All the plates were beautiful and yummy. We got a few complimentary dishes for our celebration also. Service was wonderful, and each dish was presented and explained how to eat for the best enjoyment.

Food okay, service not good - waiter asked us to leave because after we ate, he needed the table for more tips....atmosphere fine.

Wonderful as always.

Probably as good a vegetarian option as you will get in the US. Great food - both number of options and taste are amazing for vegetarians. They top it up with good vibe and service. Would love to visit again!

For this being my first time it was such an amazing experience from walking into the door to leaving out everyone was so pleasantly welcoming. Beautiful place to really get to know a person or just try a new dish. 10/10 recommend 💜

Everything was delicious. The atmosphere was chill and the stuff was really amazing. We let them guide us through their menu and we loved it. We are definitely coming back.

Thank you for an exceptional experience, especially to Jamie!

Menu is so tired. Ordered nigiri and they dressed the akami with raw garlic so it totally over powered the fish. Forgot our miso and when delivered was so measly. Uchi is the place for people who don’t understand or know sushi and like to pay to be seen. Can’t even get a cocktail. Try Kata, Katami, Soto, skip Uchi.

The sashimis were fresh and tasty.
Service is excellent. My server--Muk--is very nice, professional and took a good care of us. The staff overall is welcoming and you can feel their hospitality from the hosts, food runners, sushi chefs, and managers. They explain what on every single dish when they carry it out to you.
I came here around 6pm on Tuesday and it was packed! So definitely recommend to reserve a table in advance.

Went here on my birthday, my girlfriend and I got extreme food poisoning from one of their dishes. Also paid around $500 for 2 people for the Omakase, but the chef was quite literally just making random items off the menu, nothing exclusive or special. He would just tell us to pick something off the menu, when in reality HE’s supposed to be picking for us, the main reason I paid for the omakase experience. What’s the point in offering an Omakase menu when it’s just stuff from the main dinner menu? Do yourself a favor and get sushi anywhere else in Houston.

My sister and I visited from Chicago and were so excited to come here. To say the least, our expectations were exceeded. Presentation and taste wise, the food was phenomenal. Everything served was made to perfection and the crew was just as amazing. Thanks to them, this was the best sushi and dining experience we’ve ever had <3

Came back after like 2 years so I figured it deserves an updated review. Uchi gets a lot of hype, I can see why for those who eat fish. They have a decent vegetarian menu but Uchi is not my first choice in Houston for vegetarian sushi.
Made reservations day of and Uchi didn’t have any availability on their website but when I went to Uchiko I was able to make reservations for Uchi. That was kinda weird. Regardless we got seats at the sushi bar which was honestly really cool to watch. Yoshi was wonderful! He even gave us another vegetarian roll to try and it was really good especially the creamy sauce it came with.
We got our usual pitchfork and nasu nigiri. I also got a lychee martini which was so yum. We also got small sorbets before our meal as a palate cleanser which was really good. Sitting at the sushi bar made service and food so quick. We were out within 40 minutes. Food was 10/10.

WOW! What an incredible experience! From the friendly host who greeted us to our server Matt and his excellent recommendations, every moment was delightful. The dishes were both beautiful and delicious. Steven, the GM, also stopped by and made us feel right at home. Felt like we were visiting old friends. The hospitality here is exceptional. I’ve dined here many times over the years, and each visit is amazing. I love the consistent quality and dedication the team puts into all their work! Please keep up on keep us on the edge of our seats for more! Can’t wait for our next visit!

Our family came to uchi for a birthday celebration and our server, Jamie, took such a great care of us. Food was exceptional. We let Jamie picked dishes for us so we didn't have to decide anything. It was a memorable meal.

Top notch, super high quality food and service, and great atmosphere. We had to reserve before hand about a week or two before, but totally worth it. I’ve been here a few times and have tried their different sushi and you can’t really go wrong with any of their choices.
Hands down, some of the best desserts I’ve had of any kind. I recommend their dessert dish with the pecan praline sauce. But again, I’ve tried their different desserts and all are phenomenal.

Uchi is one of the best sushi places in Houston. I say one of the best only because every time, which is 5 trips, I go the omakase route, which is the only thing I have been able to try. The omakase is the best sushi tasting experience I have ever had. I prefer sashimi, and I intend to return and try their sashimi in the near future.
The service here is spectacular, with the staff fully engaging with you and asking questions to help you make decisions based on your preferences.

I really enjoyed the tasting dishes. The creative, and beautifully balanced blend of flavors + textures perfectly complemented each unique fish.
I appreciate that Uchi presents a well executed and innovative take. Every dish, nigiri and sashimi was memorable. No soy sauce or wasabi in sight aside from what has already been placed atop the fish.

Delicious small plates to share - high quality ingredients and it was all so fresh. We probably tried half the menu and every single thing was incredible. This is my new go-to for celebrating life events! John, our server, was very attentive, patient and informative. We really liked his friendly style.

John, our server, said he had been there for about 5 years, and his level of service showed that, we put ourselves in his hand and he guided us on a culinary journey that we thoroughly enjoyed. We hate that it had to end, but it did with the green tea dessert which was exceptional, and also was a suggestion of John, our server. He was fantastic, but the food was exceptional!
My goal is to save up enough money so I can go eat at Uchi again soon, because it’s one of the best restaurants I’ve ever eaten at!

Amazing, being from Paris we have a lot of good Japanese restaurants but this one I think is my favorite from every Japanese restaurant I’ve ever tried in the world.
We chose that they surprise us with five dishes and the fish melts in your mouth the senses in your mouth are a real experience . And the everything is perfectly balanced , you’ll get the crunch, the sweet the sour .
Only thing to note is the Brussels sprouts are too sweet it’s too much .
And finally the fried milk is amazing they explained how to eat it and I think it’s my favorite dessert now

This place was recommended and it was a big disappointment.
The sushi was ok, Service was terrible, and the atmosphere was boring. The price was ridiculous.
Kata Robata is on a whole different level and worth the price.

The food I had at Uchi was delicious! I don’t think there was a single disappointing dish. However, our seating was very disappointing. We had reserved a table for two to celebrate a special occasion, but ended up getting seated in a cramped spot for two in between very loud parties. It was hard to have a conversation.

What an amazing culinary experience !
I will say the service can be slow, but I also understand the quality of the food is outstanding and good quality food you don’t rush!
We got the 10 Course dinner and OMG it was the best sushi I have tried! This is definitely an experience! It’s pricy but wow, every food is an explosion of flavors in your mouth.

Really amazing experience here! From the warm welcome from the server of our table and every single dish here just hits the spot! We went with the server’s recommendations and ordered about 8 dishes + 3 desserts to share amongst 6 of us.
Everyone left with happy bellies and I’ll definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves the Japanese cuisine!

I’m sincerely disappointed in this restaurant. I dined for my birthday today. My waiter didn’t even acknowledge my birthday. I told her that I had a cilantro allergy and she proceeded to take my order for a dish that had cilantro already in it and when I asked her to take it back, she said that dish already had cilantro built it. Why would you let me order a dish That has knowing that I have this allergy. When I requested speak to the manager - He addressed my concern And brought me a dish without the cilantro. What was disappointing is that he never came back to ask if the dish was good or not? And they never asked me if I would dessert for my birthday. Being that I have been a regular customer here and have experienced service in prior instances in such a positive manner- It makes me not want to return.

This sushi joint is next level. It’s so good!!! 10 out of 10. Don’t expect large portions, they’re expensive and small. But the presentation and flavors are phenomenal. I came while visiting MDA and will most certainly be coming back !! And Virginia was the best waitress ever

Everything here is amazing. Very small plates of different sushi dishes with interesting sauces. Plan to spend about $100 per person to fill up or the per person 10 course sampler was running $185 per person. We opted to order about 4 items per person. Sushi on a level you have never had. Fun for 4 people to share all the items since they are 6 bites each. The Fried Milk dessert is not to be missed.

My boyfriend and I went to Uchi for the first time yesterday at happy hour , and we had a great experience. The food and service were incredible, and we were even served a dish on the house! We sat at the sushi bar, and Bailey did a great job of giving us suggestions and answering all of our questions. Our server Jamie was so kind and attentive to us the entire time we were there. The food was AMAZING, my favorite dish being the hama chili. My boyfriend’s favorite was the tako temaki. I had the strawberry spritz drink with Thai basil and a coconut tapioca dessert, which were both delicious. We will definitely be back!

Probably one of the best Sushi restaurants in America I have tried so far, if I m may make this bold statement.
Most importantly even though predominantly it is a Sushi Japanese restaurant, it has a very solid vegetarian and Vegan menu and not your conventional run of the mill California or all you can eat sushi at 9.99
Best way to experience this restaurant is to go omakase style and allowing them to provide their top menu items
Top for me as a vegetarian were Uchi Salad, Avocado Sushi, Brussels sprouts, Tomato and Mushroom Sushi, along with Mushroom Nabe
Dessert don’t miss out on Fried Milk Dessert.
