Variety of good, fresh options. The food is flavorful and well prepared. The tofu, eel (both saltwater and freshwater options), oyster mushrooms, and butter scallops were favorites!
If you want to be seated at the booth, you need a minimum of 4 people with you. Could improve the atmosphere with some music and softer lighting (especially at night).

This used to be one of our favorite sushi place but not any more. I could easily tell the owner has been changed. The dragon roll was too sweet and the portion of unagi was very small.

Sushi was not fresh at all. The portion of other food was very small too.

More than anything, the atmosphere has been changed dramatically.

I am not coming back to teppay

Teppay is hands down one of the best spots in Houston for Japanese cuisine! From the moment you walk in, the traditional ambiance transports you straight to Japan. The sushi is incredibly fresh, and you can tell they use top-quality ingredients in every dish. The tonkotsu ramen was a standout—rich and flavorful! The staff is friendly and attentive, making the entire experience even better. Highly recommend making a reservation because it can get busy, but it’s absolutely worth it. Teppay is a must-visit for anyone craving Japanese flavors!

My friend referred me here so I celebrated with a couple friends for my birthday. We ordered many dishes including ramen, sushi, sashimi, fish head, etc. I love this authentic Japanese cuisine but my favorite dish was the fried prawn heads! 10/10 so crunchy and delicious! 🦐 I love how the ambience is traditional Japanese and would bring other guests here to experience this. The waiter is so kind and friendly as well. Thank you for the great service!

Teppay is a hidden gem in Houston, tucked away in a pretty deserted strip mall, but don’t let the location fool you! The food here is solid, especially the sushi and curry. Both are fresh, flavorful, and definitely worth coming back for. However, the sukiyaki dinner beef was a bit underwhelming—it wasn’t bad, just didn’t quite hit the same mark as the other dishes.

The atmosphere is humble and unpretentious, which adds to the charm. It’s a cozy, down-to-earth spot that doesn’t try to be flashy. Prices are very reasonable for the quality, and the staff are super friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home.

Overall, Teppay offers a solid dining experience at a good value. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

A solid spot for Japanese food! My boyfriend and I had a reservation on a Friday night at 7 pm so we were seated right away when we arrived. For drinks I ordered the lychee martini and this is a must get. I personally prefer cocktails that taste like juice and this hit the spot. I not only loved how there was a citrusy/sweet sugar coating on the rim but the cocktail was also really boozy! Definitely dangerous but I enjoyed every sip haha.

For appetizer we ordered the Ika Sugatayaki and the Hamachi Kama. I appreciated how the squid was cooked just right so it was soft and the soy sauce glaze on top was perfect. As for the Hamachi Kama, this is a must get! The fish was very light, moist, and tender and when you squeeze lemon juice on top and pair it with the daikon oroshi, it's fantastic.

As for the main course, I had the Tempura and my boyfriend had the Tonkatsu. I loved how Teppay did the tempura batter right. Many places have a super thick/dense coating but Teppay does it very light which gave the tempura that airy crisp texture when you bite into it. I also loved how they put daikon oroshi in the dipping sauce! The portion is pretty big so I ended up taking some home- popped it in the air fryer the next day and it tasted just like when it was freshly served.
As for my boyfriend's tonkatsu, he said it was just okay. If I recall correctly, I believe he said something along the lines of how the meat was a little too dry. But he really enjoyed the potato salad that came on the side.
Aside from the hot dishes, we also got nigiri's. The star of the show was the ama ebi (sweet shrimp). Although it costs a little extra, it also comes with the shrimp's fried head so it's worth it!

We weren't able to explore the interior since we were seated right near the door but from the pictures I saw online, there should be a traditional seating style in the back with the tatamis. As for our server, she was sweet but also a little all over the place. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here and will be coming back!

Dining at Teppay felt like stepping straight into Japan! From the moment we arrived, the serene atmosphere and traditional decor transported us to another world. The staff greeted us with genuine warmth and hospitality, making us feel like honored guests.

The menu was a delightful journey through authentic Japanese cuisine. Each dish was meticulously prepared with the freshest ingredients and presented with incredible attention to detail. The ramen was so rich and flavorful!

One of the highlights was experiencing the Otoro and Umi. A must try at this restaurant!

Every bite was a testament to the restaurant's commitment to authenticity. Don't miss their Japanese cheesecake, which beautifully rounded off the meal!

I can’t recommend Teppay enough for anyone looking for an immersive Japanese dining experience. This will definitely be my go to place for Japanese cuisine moving forward! definitely be back for more!

I recently returned to this restaurant after two years, but it seems like they’ve changed ownership—and unfortunately, it’s not for the better. While the hot food is still good, the raw dishes have taken a noticeable hit in quality. I ordered my favorite, kimedai usuzukuri, and was very disappointed. The portion was much smaller than I remembered, and the presentation was completely different. It now just looked like a basic sashimi plate with ponzu sauce, nothing like the refined dish I used to enjoy here.

To make matters worse, service was subpar. After ordering a beer, I asked for water and never received it. The staff seemed more interested in taking orders quickly and then disappearing, with no follow-up or alternatives offered. The slow service added to the frustration.

I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone seeking authentic Japanese sushi. It’s just not the same anymore.

After about a year had not been here, today I visited and it was a huge letdown. The ambiance was completely off, the servers didn't seem to know how to serve customers and they couldn't speak Japanese. They Japanese politeness and courtesy are not there. The food portions were surprisingly small for the price, and the quality was nowhere near what it used to be. The fish was too very small and salty and lacked freshness. Additionally, the cleanliness of the place was questionable; the tables were sticky, and the restroom was not well-maintained. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience, and I won't be returning.

We ordered the omakase set, and 2-3 pieces on the plate did not seem fresh and they were very heavy handed with the wasabi. The sea urchin sushi actually tasted like it was bad and we notified staff that they may want to check the quality of these fish. Staff did not offer an apology and insisted it was fine because it had been delivered the day before. The lack of accountability and the poor quality of the food made this a disappointing experience, unlike my previous visits to Teppay. We will not be coming back.

I was very excited to try this place because of the reviews, but was very disappointed. We waited a while to get seated even with many open seats, and the food took forever to come out as well. When it did come out, there was a ton of wasabi packed tightly inside the sushi, which almost made my eyes water. The fish quality was fine until we got to the sea urchin. I've had a lot of sea urchin in the past, and enjoyed it immensely--but this was not the same experience. We left a note about it to the staff, and while one of them was apologetic, the other one started getting very defensive and told us that it had just been delivered yesterday. I know what I tasted, and it felt very disheartening to hear that that staff member would rather deny our note, rather than accept our comment. Also, whole restaurant was a bit hot and smelled a bit off. Thank you to that one waiter who did try to apologize--salvaged an otherwise terrible experience.

Edit: Saw the response from the restaurant. I feel even worse now, because:
1. They said we didn't get seated because they were reserved, but no one even helped us while we were standing at the door for ages to even tell us that there was a wait.
2. I know what I tasted, and the fish made me want to puke, and the freshness doesn't address the huge wasabi issue.
3. For any other prospective customers, I'd like to let them see how this restaurant has responded to all our feedback--by just denying our experiences instead of taking accountability and trying to improve. Changing to a one star because it's clear they don't care about their customers. I hope they take this feedback with grace to improve their business.

The restaurant boasts Japanese-inspired decor and a welcoming, clean atmosphere. The waiters were somewhat friendly. The food was fresh and great. The space wasn't packed but there was a steady stream of customers coming in. A lot of people order the sushis and the tempuras. I wanted the chawanmushi but minimum order is two and my friend doesn’t want it.

Kanpachi 間八 Great Amberjack 5/5
Hamachi ハマチ Yellowtail 5/5
Chūtoro 中トロ Medium Fatty Tuna 5/5

Miso Soup 5/5

Chicken Katsu Curry 5/5 Waiter was nice to offer me the chicken instead of the pork.

Eggplant and Green Pepper 3.5/5 I thought this was too salty for me but my friend likes it. Don’t think I would order it again.

Tenzaru Soba 4/5 It was good but the soba is not authentic enough. I guess it is really hard to find a good one. The tempuras (2 shrimps, sweet potato, pumpkin) were good. I guess you can’t expect much considering the price.

Sasa Dango 5/5 The dessert looked really authentic and tasted great!

I really wanted the burnt cheese cake but it was sold out at 8PM. Guess I need to come earlier next time!

April 25th 2024. A friend and myself attempted to dine in this restaurant. We were greeted nicely and told that there was a wait and we were fine with waiting. Meanwhile, the dinning area was pretty much empty and the hostess attempted to explain away why we couldn't be seated was due to multiple reservations. So apparently, the entire place was "reserved"...well over 15 empty tables and booths. Also , this place was recommended for an authentic Japanese experience but its locked behind a "8 person" minimum w/obligatory spending minimum. Before we decided that the vibe was trash a white patron who was leaving looked at us and said that he simply walked in and seated himself and that there was no reason to wait. This place is racist/Elitist and misleading. 0/10 If you are not white or Asian stay away!

P.S. IT explains the signed pictures of George Bush senior and his wife on the wall.

Edit,
Response to "Owner" ; My experience at your restaurant is an accurate description from my perspective. You don't get to invalidate that truth. The Teppay restaurant I walked into yesterday had exclusively Asian staff. Five asian males behind the sushi bar and 2 asian female wait staff/hostess. please post a picture of your multicultural staff. Your establishment did not make me feel welcome or wanted and the place was damned near empty besides the sushi bar.

This restaurant has been around for many years but was never my favorite and last night's dinner discouraged me from ever going again. One of our orders, "omakase, sashimi for $80/12pcs", was extremely underwhelming when it was presented in terms of quality, taste, and amount. I made the server aware - telling her that the dish was quite disappointing for the amount of money charged. Instead of making an effort to improve the experience, I was confronted with a defensive attitude and my complaint was not communicated to the chef. The way the server handled the situation was unacceptable, and I felt cheated as a customer. There is absolutely no chance I will return again after this experience!

My recent dining experience at Teppay, located at 6516 Westheimer Rd A2, Houston, was nothing short of spectacular. The highlight of my visit was the unparalleled freshness of their sushi, with every piece tasting as if it had just been plucked from the ocean.

The lobster sashimi was a true testament to their commitment to freshness – the lobster was still alive, ensuring the utmost quality and flavor. This dish was not only a culinary delight but also an extraordinary experience in itself.

Every item I ordered was delicious, crafted with attention to detail and seasoned to perfection. The chefs at Teppay truly understand the art of Japanese cuisine, balancing traditional techniques with innovative flavors.

The ambiance of the restaurant added to the overall experience, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The staff were attentive, knowledgeable, and made excellent recommendations, contributing to an outstanding dining experience.

This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant I have been to in America. I don’t normally write reviews but have to write one for this place. I lived in Japan for two years. I have tried so many times to find a place in America that serves Japanese food that tastes exactly like it does in Japan. This is the only place I’ve been to that has met my expectations. The sake nigiri was perfect. The tempura and tempura sauce tasted exactly how it should (highly recommend). The sukiyaki and katsudon both were authentic to taste. Needless to say, I will be back several times. If you are serious about wanting to experience real Japanese food, this place is an absolute must.

We were expecting better. Not really worth coming back. Loved the atmosphere. We tried the shitake shrimp past stuffed mushrooms and they were pretty bland and the tempura batter had the texture of sitting out too long after being fried. Maybe we will try again but needs some improvement.

We came on a Saturday night with a reservation, restaurant was busy, but not totally full. We liked the personal touch of a name card to save our place at the sushi bar when we arrived. The service by the waitstaff was slow the entire night, they did not stop by to take our initial order for about 10 mins, we were confused if we should order off the QR code on the table, or not. The order was taken by the waitstaff, but when the chef behind the sushi bar noticed we were not getting service, he took our order, as well. I recommend the various sushi bar items, the otoro and salmon belly were really great. Beyond the sushi bar, we tried the chicken karage, katsu curry and gyoza - all were ok. The burnt cheesecake was really delicious. We plan to go back and order the omakase next time.

The rice consistency was horrible, which is detrimental to a Japanese restaurant.

We ordered Tendon and Kaisen-don, and the Tempura was ok but the rice was very wet (donburi rice is supposed to have firm texture so that the rice does’t stick too much to the Tempura).

And the rice for the Kaisen-don (sashimi over rice) was wet and warm, where Kaisen-don rice is supposed to be cooled down, just like a sushi rice, because you don’t want the fresh fish over the rice to get warm (raw seafood should not be warm)…

The sashimi did not feel fresh because of the warm and wet rice, and the gari (ginger) also tasted horrible. We can get much better/fresher Kaisen-don and gari for half the price at Daido!

Several years ago (before Covid) this place was one of our go to Japanese restaurants, but back then we had the incident where our sushi had avocado skin inside, and the sushi-chef didn’t even apologize, and after wanting to give it another chance, now this…

The waitress is still just as bad as I remember, where she doesn’t have the courtesy to make you feel welcome (makes you want to tell her that a customer is not forcing her to work there, so if she chose to work there show some hospitality and smile to give sense of welcome; without paying customers you don’t have a job). And don’t take away the plates when there’s no place to hold the chopsticks/silverware. Japanese restaurants should have a hashi-oki (chopsticks holder) to place the chopsticks between dishes.

Gave it another chance, but will not be going back again (even with a different owner, bad training and bad management seems to be the same).

We showed up without a reservation. luckily it wasn't too busy so we got a seat right away. Servers were very attentive throughout the dinner.
The onigiri is cheaper than HEB and way better. Ume is an acquired taste, but I love it and they delivered. The chirashi and sashimi were very high quality and melted in my mouth. The curry was also a standout. It was filling without feeling too heavy.

Teppay: A Sushi Lover's Dream

The otoro at Teppay is so good, it's like it was caught by Poseidon himself and blessed by the gods of Mount Olympus. It's the most flavorful, fatty, and melt-in-your-mouth otoro I've ever had.

Teppay is a Japanese restaurant in Houston that is known for its fresh sashimi. I recently went to Teppay for dinner, and I was blown away by the quality of the fish.

The sashimi was so fresh, it melted in my mouth. Even the regular tuna was amazing, but the otoro was out of this world. It was so fatty and flavorful, it was like I was eating tuna from the gods.

The other dishes at Teppay were also excellent. The tempura was crispy and light, and the sushi rolls were perfectly made.

The service at Teppay was also great. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and they were happy to make recommendations.

Overall, I had an amazing experience at Teppay. The food was incredible, the service was excellent, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great sushi experience.

Here are some of the pros of Teppay:

Fresh sashimi
Delicious tempura
Perfectly made sushi rolls
Friendly and knowledgeable staff
Here are some of the cons of Teppay:

Can be a bit pricey
Reservations are recommended
The restaurant can be crowded, especially on weekends
Overall, I would highly recommend Teppay to anyone looking for a great sushi experience. The food is incredible, the service is excellent, and I would definitely go back again.

Terrible costumer service! Made reservations around noon with a female employee with an accent; she took my name down, my party size, my phone number. However, upon showing up expecting to be seated we were told that they did not have our reservation and therefore we had to wait for an hour. I asked them to please double check but they were adamant that they did not have our reservation and decided to use this as an opportunity to try to sell us private seating with a minimum of a $400.00 check - mind you, it's only myself, my husband and 2 small kids! Are you kidding me?! After pleading with them to double check our reservation, they did not care and with two empty tables they still denied us seats. With 2 small hungry kids we had to walk away defeated and insulted. If you plan to visit this subpar restaurant, call to triple check your reservation or you'll be in the same predicament as us!

lots of photos i had saved up in my camera roll. this place was really good for sushi, amazing. i got a ramen here in which i was a bit disappointed with the choice of meat and when it came to flavor i honestly expected more out of here. besides that my brother got the chicken curry, delicious and good breaded crumbly goodness. this place had hand rolls and i got the spicy salmon and it was perfect. salmon chunky goodness. this place was great and i would come again if i am in the area!! the inside was beautiful and so nice. Japanese decor with a tight comfy cute knit spot that felt very homey. love it here!!

The restaurant has been in the location for over 15 years, food is always excellent here, sushi or sashimi are both top picks, their tempura 🍤 is one of the best in town too, I haven't tried anything that they serve came out bad so far. The only complaint is that there could be a long waiting line and food could be slow to come out.

One of the very few Japanese owned/operated sushi establishments in Houston. You won't get fancy toppings on your sushi here but ice cold draft Asahi with your fresh sashimi is never a bad idea... Love this place

This place is amazing good environment
When you go in side the restaurant you’ll feel like you have dinner in Japan

They have the private room with a little changed for that but you will not regret!

High quality of food all sushi are good and the ramen too and the price are reasonable.
Highly recommend! You’ll not disappointed!

teppay has been one of my fav spots houston for years now!
not too many japanese restaurants serve chawannushi (must be ordered as 2) & im soo happy teppay does! always the freshest ingredients & great sake choices. the restaurant can feel a bit cramped, but reflects an authentic japanese dining experience.
make reservations — this place gets deservingly busy.

We came here as a group of eight people, it takes forever to bring the food. The ramen is not good, you can feel the inside of the pork meat coming with the ramen is still cold. And it is too expensive, with the same price you can have way better Japanese food in Houston.

Trusted the numerous positive reviews on Google and tried their omakase, which was shockingly bad. The quality and freshness of the sushi and rice were both subpar. Everything, especially the uni, was clearly not fresh.

I was looking forward to have authentic Japanese food here as many reviews recommended. This was one of the worst sushi places I have tried so far. Not sure where the five star reviews are coming from. The fish was not fresh, we tried five different things all tasteless and the food made me sick. Not recommending this place at all.

Ordered take out and food looked good but taste was...lacking. I ordered the hand roll spider roll(crab was way too fried, burnt taste overwhelmed), rock n roll(just lacking in any taste, like it was made caucasian style), and the unagi sushi(it was sufficient. If they messed up unagi sushi, then i would have completely bombed the review.

Upon picking up the food though, the restaurant looked authentic and was wanting to go here for dates if the sushi was good but unfortunately, it will be a no go.

Would not recommend the toro sushi. Fish is thin, looks like it’s falling apart, both the fish and rice. For $15, I’d expect it to melt in my mouth like toro usually does, but this one doesn’t. We felt like we got the leftovers.

Been going here since 2009 and over a decade later, I'm still here!

If you want to find authentic Japanese food, then this is the place for you. Selections for fish are seasonal, which means you can look forward to new things to try.

My favorite staple is the "negimayaki," which is a thinly sliced beef rolled over spring onions and seared.

Highly recommend!

Not sure how it took us this long to find this place but glad we did! A local sushi chef recommended Teppay as the best sushi in Houston and I'd have to say they're probably right. The place makes me feel like I'm in Japan again. The rice has the right amount of vinegar and the cuts of fish were pristine. Highly highly recommended.

Great fresh sushi. We came here for early lunch and it quickly got crowded. We ordered Beef Bowl, Regular Sushi, Sakura Mochi and Sasa Dango. The rice cooked properly so it wasn't hard or mushy. The octopus was chewy, the unagi flavorful and the fish melted in your mouth. However, I cannot recommend the beef bowl because it was very salty. The sakura mochi and sasa dango were interesting to try though they can be too sweet. Overall I recommend the sushi here.

I have never made a post before. But I have decide to make one for the only restaurant that I didn’t give any tips to. We waited approximately for 40-60 minutes for our first piece of sushi. Don’t get me wrong, their food is great for their price. But when we finished a couple pieces that we waited for so long. We wanted to order more then we learned that their kitchen is already close. THEY DID NOT GIVE US A HEADS UP FOR LAST ORDER! This is something that I personally have never experienced at any other restaurant. We left with half stomach empty and disappointment.

Fresh sushi. Huge nigiris. Traditional Japanese vibe and food. Simply fantastic. I eat a lot of sushi — this may very well be my new favorite spot. Will definitely be back.

Sake, Hamachi, chopped scallop, O-toro, Uni, Unagi and Tamago really hit the mark.
