Taro is a casual Japanese restaurant, located at the Med Center, steps away from NRG stadium. We source fresh, healthy and high-graded food from local reputable vendors and bring the customers the authentic Tokyo taste with high quality and at very affordable price. Our guests include local residents, students, office workers, medical staff, business people, international tourists, arena spectators, and shoppers.
The guests will be greeted by contemporary Japanese design mixed with traditional cultural elements, and will be introduced to the exceptional Japanese ramen and sushi rolls that will suit a wide variety of appetites. Taro offers takeout, delivery, and catering service.
We stopped by to pick up sushi to take to our hotel room nearby and wow this place did not disappoint! We devoured the delicious sashimi, sushi rolls, seaweed and squid salads in no time.
The service was very friendly and professional. I would definitely entertain the idea of trying the AYCE option if we were in the area again.

I was pleasantly surprised to find crayfish at this Japanese restaurant! The prices are affordable, making it a great value for money. The flavor of the crayfish leans towards the sweeter side, which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, the crawfish today is not fresh.

The service was great, but unfortunately, I found the ramen disappointing. The broth lacked flavor and tasted watered down. The noodles were too thick, and the meat and vegetables didn’t blend well with the rest of the dish, leaving the bowl feeling disjointed. Anyone who states otherwise, definitely have one of a kind taste buds.

We have been there twice for their all you can eat! The tataki and sushi are great. The ingredients are fresh and love their cocktail too! Sushi rolls are ok, we didn’t order too many because most of them have spicy tuna on it, but this is only my personal preference.

This is a perfect little sushi spot for lunch time! You get 2 rolls with a soup or salad for $10.99! The salad has a light dressing with crispy onions, red peppers, cabbage, and crisp lettuce. Today I ordered the crawfish avocado roll and the fried shrimp, crab meat, avocado roll. Both so delicious! I additionally ordered a Thai milk tea on the side. It was good but I like mine a little more milky. I would definitely recommend anyone looking for a quick lunch. It don’t even take them 10 mins to bring everything out!

This was a great choice for a takeout! They are located close to the NRG dtadium so i would imagine there are times when they are extremely busy. Food was delicious. Their containers didnt hold the broth well and some of it spilled, bot a big deal but something they can improve on. Apparently this place is an all you can eat buffet too. I would definitely come back here again.

I'm a regular here and I like the food. But the other night I payed with my credit card and the guy (waiter) hands back my check and told me to put a tip. then he stood there until I wrote something down. I usually tip cash so the waiter can get the money directly but I was waiting for my girlfriend to come out the bathroom with her purse because she carries cash. I found this very disrespectful to get handed back the check and told to tip. the waiter was also very rude. he started off with "so what do you want?" after just being seated and barely looking at the menu. then he yells from the water station to get our attention. Just to say "so do you want ice or no". this is very upsetting because I go here almost every week to every other week but after this experience I was very upset.

the food is okay but I'm very disappointed with the service. the waiter was very rude and he was very pushy for a tip. he got upset because I didn't tip on my card but he did not wait for me to put in my cash tip. He gave me back my check then just stood there and looked at me. As a small business owner who likes to support other small businesses this was very upsetting to see another small businesses treat their customers this way. My family and my employees will no longer go here due to their rudeness. 2 bowls of ramen ($32)

The food is above average but way too expensive, considering the size of each dish. The service and atmosphere are good. The also offer ayce but cost 50 before tax. Consider the quality of the food, it is not a good deal.

Said no pork + sub chicken, they said no problem and still put pork. Did not see it until I came home. This is a religious dietary restriction for me so I could not taste anything touching the pork.
The broth is nestled beneath the ingredients so was able to taste that - it was old and sour. I’ve never tasted anything worse.
The spider roll was inedible.
Overall, the worst dining experience Houston has to offer. I’m not sure if I received someone else’s order (that had been sitting out for a few days) or what.

Could only give like one star for the food. Chinese owned Ayce Japanese restaurant that should give you a good sense of what their food is like.
Hot items taste worse than store bought frozen food, and their fish is hard to swallow to be honest.
Menu had noodles on it when we opened it, and there was barely anyone eating during lunch time.

They said you get what you pay for and this couldn’t have been more true here. My partner and I opted into the all you can eat and honestly should have known right there that we weren’t going to eat quality food. From our very first roll we realized something was off. Two rolls later we realized the snow crab was fake and actually imitation crab. The beer was also room temperature and from the gyoza (dumplings) it was evident that the pan and oil were old and not cleansed properly. This place is good if you’re looking to get a lot of food for a cheaper price but if you’re sushi lover and value freshness do not come here.

All you can eat for 30 dollars, but make sure you can eat it all and not waste any cause you will be charged a wasteful fee of 15 dollars per pound. And you only have 1.5 hours to eat it. So order what you can eat. Its really great food. Loved the chicken ramen

very few places excell in all their categories of menu but this place absolutely does. all the way around. From the cheerful greeting at the door right on thru the end of their menu it is a 5 star experience for their $30. what ever off the menu. i just love the smaller portions that are just perfect for pacing yourself on this trip thru Japan. This review was based on 4 times there. I also owned a restaurant and nightclub in Chicago for over a decade and am picky AF.

I have never had worse service at a restaurant. They dropped our food off and never once came back to refill drinks or ask if we wanted anything else. We told the sever we wanted to order more rolls when we placed our order. We had to stop someone walking by to ask for our check. 20 minutes later…our server walked by and literally threw the check at us. When we told them as we paid the bill how terrible it was…the girl just stared at us. I don’t go out to eat very often and this was so disappointing.

You only get certain amount of time to order, and if you don't finish your food you have to pay for what you don't eat. Those rules really made it hard to relax and enjoy my food, the food was ok not the best, not the worst, went for my friend's birthday and we were all stuffing ourselves because we didn't want to pay extra for the food we didn't eat, that was not fun, I'd rather just pay for the food I'm gonna eat, if that makes any sense.

One of the worst restaurants I have been to. Food is so so, but worse is the customer service. We got all you can eat. The waitress got really impatient and rude when I was thinking about what to order. In the middle of desert, she brought a bill and we paid our bills. After I gave her my credit card, I asked if I can order another scoop of ice cream and she said no, we already brought you the bill. This is all you can eat and it's still within our 1.5 hour allowance I don't know why she did that. I wish I didn't come. Will strongly advise my friends to not visit. Save your money. There are better Japanese restaurants in Houston.

Some points for consideration:
- They offer free drink with a prove that you give 5 stars, which it’s not a honesty review.
- I got all you can eat and some of the special can’t not even fit in our mouth that’s how big each piece was!!! What shame from a Japanese restaurant!!!! I been to other all you can eat and this never happened before!
- we order a alcoholic drink that looks like a lemonade.
- some of our other they didn’t send to us.
- when I complained about the size of the sushi’s the server got offended and said for me got just the basics roll.
- we spend almost $100 there with 2 all you can eat and the “lemonade” and I can’t be more disappointed, the 5 starts review its fake and they make the special roll so big for us to get full fast.
- the barbecue meat was good!
- that’s not definitely 5 stars but a 3 stars and if you can drive to the memorial area the Taizzi restaurant also have all you can eat with a better experience.

So good for the price, one of the best quality AYCE sushi I’ve had. They let us pick anything on the menu there isn’t a separated AYCE menu.
The sushi and the rolls had a decent fish to rice ratio. The ramen was way better than I would’ve expected for a sushi restaurant. Just be aware that the appetizers mostly come in 2 pieces. The salmon tataki and albacore tataki were good but tasted quite different, don’t get the salmon tataki if you don’t like wasabi and the ablacore tataki was savory with fried onion and sesame.
Seems like they’re rolling out a bbq option but didn’t the that today.

[Original review September 2021]
Service was excellent and food was delicious!
Went here for lunch on a Sunday. Our waiter, Tiger, was friendly, attentive, and thoughtful. It was our first restaurant outing with our 7 week old baby, and Tiger and the other the wait staff made it go so smoothly, setting up a space for the car seat, even making sure my food was hot after I took a break to nurse the baby.
We ordered the Taro Special #1 and the Tonkatsu Original. Both were good! The meat was cooked well, the flavor was good. One note: I don't think the taro special #1 was advertised as spicy but it was just a tiny bit spicy. We also tried the sweet potato creme brulee and it was just the right amount of sweetness.
Overall I'm really glad for a good ramen place so close by! I'll definitely be back.
UPDATE April 2024:
2.5 years later, Taro has seen a lot of changes. We had been many times and gotten to know the wait staff and gotten to see their menu evolve with some really unique and delicious dishes. Recently though, a lot of the wait staff have turned over and the menu has changed as well. The service is still excellent, the food quality is still good, but it's noticeably different. The unique dishes are gone, and what remains are somewhat typical "Japanese restaurant in America" dishes. They added an AYCE option where you order off the menu. I believe they're trying to add a Japanese BBQ option soon as well. We will probably still eat there from time to time but we have not been going back as much as before.

A Culinary Gem Near NRG Park: Taro
During my visit, I tried their ramen and Chicken Karaage. The broth was rich and flavorful, while the noodles maintained a perfect chewiness.
What truly set my experience apart was the service. I was attended to by a young lady whose kindness and attentiveness were exceptional. She ensured that the dining experience was not only about the food but also about the warmth and hospitality that Japanese culture is known for.
Taro is more than just a restaurant; it's a gateway to experiencing the essence of Japan right in the heart of Houston. Whether you're a long-time lover of Japanese cuisine or a curious newcomer ready to explore, Taro promises an authentic and memorable dining experience. With its combination of delightful dishes, inviting atmosphere, and exceptional service, Taro has firmly established itself as a must-visit destination for anyone looking to satisfy their Japanese food cravings.

After spending hours in NRG watching rodeo, we were so hungry and found a nearby restaurant named Taro. It was really great to have meal there, including sushi and drink. We enjoyed the ramen and all you can eat. The old guy waiter was very nice and humorous. I liked him. Very good service.

I could get away with discussing the taste, but all I got from the barbecue was cold, burnt, and hopelessly bitter that lingered in my mouth. When I pointed this out, the waiter asked me if I wanted to talk to the manager and I said yes. After that she brought my bill and told me the manager was busy and didn't have time to talk to me. So I ended my 15 minute buffet and paid $67.

The rainbow was delicious! The nemo was ok but don't recommend it! We ordered two plates of chicken teriyaki. The chicken teriyaki I forced myself to eat 3/4 of it and told my daughter to leave it on the table after her first bite. The chicken was dry and had an overwhelming chicken flavor and not even hot the rice was super dry I had maybe 3 bites. I'm glad I had ordered some sort of philly
roll. Maybe it's because we came in on New Years eve 30 mins before close? Felt super rushed for spending over $110 to eat in 15 mins.

Not your usual ramen restaurant. Very accommodating and attentive service staffs. Surprisingly, they got our orders out around 3 minutes or less. Me and one other person got the all you can eat option. It is really great because they make the food to order, and you don't have to worry about the freshness of the food or how sanitary the customers taking food are.
I really didn't know the menu, but our waiter suggested what we should eat and his suggestions were spot on. TikTok brought me here in search of sushi happy hour. I unfortunately didn’t see the closing time when heading there using google maps. They did serve us however the sever was extremely slow the sushi came out wayyyyyy after the hot items. The water taste like sewage/sitting pipe water. My server didn’t seem to understand what a lemon was. Rewind she offered us the all you can eat once we were seated. They closed at 9:30p and still unaware of closing time and uninformed we tried to order seconds and drinks only for the manager to stand with the server and say KITCHEN CLOSED very sternly as if we were creating an issue. We did have kids so it maybe bias against families with kids. The food is mediocre and I wouldn’t bother giving it another try due to service and management. Definitely don’t come after 9p.

This is ridiculous. How is this AYCE when they would bring out the sashimi last and limit our orders... It seemed like they are very hesitant to bring out dishes especially the more pricey ones like Sashimi. At this rate, might as well not do AYCE. The bar is also overpriced for its quality and they seem to lack a designated bartender. The drinks are expensive and very mediocre.

Very good little hidden gem. This place is located a few blocks north of NRG stadium and is very unassuming on the outside but don't let that fool you. First the inside was very nice and clean and very nicely decorated. The service was top notch as well. Food came out quickly and it was presented nicely. We had 3 rolls and they were all tasty. We ordered a tiger eye even though it wasn't on the menu. They were nice enough to make us one anyway. It was one of the better ones I've had. We had a few Sapporo beers and they were nice and cold. Highly recommend if you're in the area and in the mood for sushi, ramen, or bbq.

We found this place on facebook, expecting good quality sashimi and sushi. But, in reality, the fishes did not taste fresh and the sashimi cuts were very thin. The waitresses and the manager were inattentive and the Yakitori was burnt.
We arrived at 8:30 PM and sat down to order food around 8:40 pm for AYCE. The servers informed us that the kitchen would stop taking orders at 9:15 pm, which was ridiculous since that would mean us having less than hour to eat when the AYCE menu says an hour and a half limit.
Furthermore, althought the restaurant was big, the AC was very bad and we were really hot while eating. They even don't have AC reaching the middle seating areas too.
Visited 2 years ago
What do you see labeled on this menu?? All you can eat right? So tell me why the wait staff and manager says there is a limit to how many sashimi I would like to place in my piehole! If you you like sashimi don’t come here it’s not AYCE even tho the menu states it! I’m paying an AYCE price. Poor establishment.

Hey! It is so frustrating when the restaurant falsely states their closing times online. Recently, the weather has been really hot and the sun have been setting at a later time, causing us to be hungry at a later time. I was hanging out with my friends till around 9 PM and we started to get hungry. We went online and found this place, stating that they are closing at 9:30 PM. We arrived at 9:15 ish, and I know we arrived a bit later, but the restaurant should have been more responsible with their closing times. We also wouldn’t mind ordering to-go as well. However, to our surprise it was closed. It is so annoying when restaurant owners cannot be truthful with their closing times. We ended up going home hungry.

When we first arrived, the waitstaff/host staff ignored us. We waited for over 10 minutes before anyone greeted us, and there were about 6 other people waiting behind us to be seated. One couple even left because no one informed us about being seated/possible wait times. Once they finally acknowledged and sat us, we ordered drinks and our first round of AYCE. However, the service declined afterward. We waited for over 30 minutes before being able to place another order or getting any drink refills. Since the AYCE limit is 1.5 hours, they try to rush you out when you approach that time. Nevertheless, we could only order food twice within that span, and most people at our table left very hungry. This experience was disappointing, as we paid $250 and left AYCE feeling hungry. The service fell short, and I'm uncertain if we'll return.

We saw a report about this restaurant on a radio station’s website. This is a very clean nice restaurant. The food is great and we selected to use ‘buffet’ payment method - we ordered many dishes but at the end, we pay $30/person. This great payment method may not last long. We used this method ordered half dishes on the menu and shared by five of us. We will know what to order for our next visit!

When my son and I chose to visit just for sushi but little did we know the whole menu is all you can eat for less than $35.00. If everyone at the table does the All You Can Eat option, you can share. The owners are great, and the staff is kind, and you're never empty on anything. Definitely a YES from me!!

Food was amazing, atmosphere was okay, but was pretty empty. The service was the biggest issue. They check on you, which in itself is no issue, but it’s constant, which can be really annoying. But the worst part is the unprofessionalism of the staff. When paying the bill, they will loom over you and if they don’t see you tipping, they will pressure you into doing so, trying to guilt trip you, making you feel bad for not leaving a tip or leaving too small of one. Do not recommend if you want a good dining experience. And it’s worse if you split the bill, because then you are both expected to leave a tip even if one of your fellow diners have already left one.

Great food and value for all-you-can-eat Japanese food! We really enjoyed the food quality and selection. Our waiter was also very kind and helpful. Very nice interior, even though the location doesn't give that impression. I'll be a regular!

Updates:
Management was changed and thus there are changes to the menu and style of some food options. Food quality is still great, it’s just different now.
Original:
Hidden Gem! I’d say they have the best ramen in Houston. The soup base has great flavors but it’s not overly salty like ramen in a lot of other ramen restaurants in Houston.
They also offer a variety of Japanese food which I find them authentic and delicious (from the perspective of a Hong Kong-born Japanese food lover)!

We dined in yesterday for lunch, place was empty but service was amazing, food was hot and fresh. We had the Atlantic City roll, sea lion roll and shrimp fried rice. Everything was amazing but baby! That shrimp fried rice was slamming! If you’re looking for fresh and great sushi this is your place. We will be back. They also validate your parking garage ticket so make sure to bring that in with you.

I just tried visiting this place. First timer and the waitress totally ignored me. I'm guessing because I'm alone. I won't try to come back again.

Aesthetically, this restaurant is really pretty! It's like a hidden gem. Not sure how long they have been there but I've never seen it the few times I'm in the complex. They have tables and booths.
Service was good. Our waiter checked on us multiple times.
FOOD AND DRINK:
They have all you can eat for $30.99 per adult.
For drinks, we ordered house sake and a lemon drop. The sake was served at room temperature. The lemon drop was very good. Not sweet or too strong, but a good balance.
The taro ramen lacked flavor and was warm, not hot. I was told it's usually full of flavor and steaming hot.
The Rock shrimp was mildly crispy and good flavor. Served very warm too.
The golf sushi roll was good. It was 8-10 pieces. Deep fried Shrimp tempura with cream cheese and jalapeno.
The pork gyoza was ok. Could use more flavor.
For dessert, we shared the vanilla Ice cream and shrimp tempura oreo, which surprisingly good. The oreo was deep fried and had chocolate drizzing on top which a small side of whipping cream and a cherry. The ice cream was 1 or 2 scoops.
Ratings:
House Sake - 3/5
Rock shrimp - 5/5
Taro ramen - 3/5
Golf roll - 4.5/5
Lemon martini - 5/5
Gyoza pork - 3/5
Vanilla Ice cream and shrimp tempura oreo - 5/5
I will definitely return back to try other ramen options and more sushi.

We have gone twice so far and had great experiences both times. The service was excellent, the food was good, and the cocktails are great.

We had a pretty large group and the staff were great and friendly, the wait was minimal, the food was delicious, and it's got a pretty flower wall that's perfect for some quick selfies. We had a great time and the only complaint I have is I wish there were more options for kids and some items like the meat on a stick were $4 each with 4 tiny pieces of meat on the stick so that was a bummer even though it tasted good. It would take about 5-6 of them to fill up one of my kids.

I live in Atlanta GA, however I travel to Houston, TX often. This has been my go to place since I stumbled on this gem. The food is amazing, My daughters love Ramen we usually get Taro Ramon #1, The sushi is skillfully made. I enjoyed the 911 roll. There's usually no long wait and food is served promptly. Thanks Taro for being a great comfort food. 😘

The food was unfortunately very subpar. The sushi and sashimi was fine, but the tempura was so bad that I couldn't even eat it. It tasted old, stale and just off. The beef skewer was very overcooked and hard to eat, with almost no seasoning. The service was fine, and the place looked great, but the food was so bad that I won't be back.

We dined early during supper. It was peaceful, even though there were several other customers. I'm guessing it's quite a bit louder later into the night. There was dance music playing somewhat quietly. We sat in a comfortable booth. We had a very personable and attentive server. He was quite kind. The food was delicious! I have finally found another place that serves chicken fried rice like it should be! My sister loved the ramen and let me try a little. The broth was not too rich, but flavorful. We both enjoyed our little bites of mochi ice cream. My sister had the red bean, I had the strawberry. Highly recommend, though it's kind of pricey. You can expect to spend around $25/person with appetizers, but without drinks (we had water, and they do have lemons!).

Seven of us came for lunch to kick off the New Year. There are many choices so people who like sushi and /or sashimi will be happy. If you're more into ramen, they have a good variety based on broth and the various additions. There is also an intriguing variety of other dishes. Subsequently, all the managers in my department came and were also very happy. I can't recommend a given dish because the variety of things these people tried pleased them all.

The food here is terrible. Poorly seasoned, dry Karage. Tonkatsu tasted like fish stock. The manager came to argue with me after sending a dish back that wasn't good. Waiting for service basically our entire time there from the moment we entered. The restaurant wasn't even busy only two tables sat.

Taro is a traditional sushi bar and ramen noodle restaurant located across the street from NRG Stadium in Houston. The sushi omakase places are so hard to find a reasonable one for the price and experience. you won't be disappointed! The quality of the fish is amazing. They put so much care and effort into each bite! The service was perfect And the sushi chef was friendly and informative about each fish we were eating. The ambiance was nice, it's an Intimate setting for a dinner date!! Loved every minute of it! Plenty of parking. For a special occasion, this is a nice option! Worth the money and a fun experience! I highly recommend comi
