An above average, good choice for a Japanese outing. I definitely had a positive experience.
The ikageso karaage (fried squid with spicy mayo) was plenty tasty. Great texture on the fried squid with shredded cabbage, dipping it in the spicy mayo made it all come together nicely.
The takoyaki (a dish that’s close to my heart) was surprisingly good, and the most authentic dish I tried here. It was incredibly rich; I had a hard time finishing it! It was a little mushy on one of them, but the rest were crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, and it captured all the flavors. It reminded me of iyaki my Japanese mother made when I was a child.
The miso soup was good, too. It had bits of tofu and seaweed, and the miso was real, not a powder. You can tell if miso soup is real by the little bits it leaves at the bottom of the bowl when you finish it. Miso is, after all, soybeans ground into a paste.
The steak combination (I ordered medium well with scallops) was tasty, too. The fried rice in particular was surprisingly good; I ordinarily don’t care for fried rice. It was much more flavorful than I was expecting. The scallops, steak, and even vegetables were all well-cooked, and I cleaned the plate. It’s very rare for me to clean a plate if it has a big portion of veggies on it, which this did (onions, mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, and zucchini). The sauce was a nice touch. I sure wish there was more protein on that dish, it was that good! One scallop was gritty for one bite, but that was it. All the other ones were perfectly clean.
The yuzu white peach drink was certainly unique. It wasn’t too much of anything, and captured all the flavors of yuzu and peach.
The staff got the job done, and did it well. They were some of the most attentive I had seen, and were always courteous and smiled. I think they could have been just a little friendlier, but the way they are is fine, it’s not something I can really take issue with.
The atmosphere is nice too, it’s quite modern with an element of Japanese decor. I do feel like something was missing and it’s all very black, but it wasn’t a problem or anything. A few more decorations to liven up the place would make it perfect in my opinion, but the way it is is just fine. I especially liked the mural on the wall of black mountains with soft-white lights behind them, casting a silhouette of each.
The only real complaint I have was the bar counter, it was sticky for some reason, and it bothered me. I asked the staff if I could move to a proper table, which they allowed. So if you come here, until they use a different cleaner for that countertop that doesn’t leave a sticky residue, do yourself a favor and get a table.

I really love their ramen noodles! The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the broth was rich and flavorful. The menu offered a great variety, and the appetizers we tried were delicious and came in huge portions. Highly recommend for any ramen enthusiast! Quality food, great prices, and friendly staff!

Solid 4 all around. Ordered shrimp tempura and popular black garlic ramen, the spicy version. Ingredients were good, taste was good. Service was quick and cordial. Ambiance was appropriate for this type of restaurant. Not a traditional Japanese vibe but comfortable and welcoming. The overall experience was very positive. $30 dollars was for the total bill for one person.
If your expectation is not to be in a traditional Japanese restaurant, this is a solid option

As a Asian and lover of Japanese cuisine, I must say that this restaurant is a hidden gem in Dallas!
They offer Gyu-Katsu and Tori Katsu served with a small grill plate and a charcoal stove, just like in Japan. This was my first time encountering such a setup in the States!
Although you have to grill the meat yourself, they prepare it so well that all you need to do is make sure not to overcook it. Then, you're in for a delicious meal!
Additionally, I absolutely love their Udon—it's incredibly tasty, and their broth are very nice. This dish is a must-try at this restaurant.
I'm definitely coming back for more Udon and Katsu!

Visited yesterday for lunch, it was delicious! The service was great. Really impressed with how hot and fresh all of the food came out. The Gyoza was the best I’ve ever had! Black garlic ramen was amazing. We also ordered some sushi and hibachi, both were superior to other restaurants in the area. This spot will be a regular stop for us when we are in the area.

This place has gone down hill.
They overcooked my filet hibachi. I ordered medium (hot and pink) and it came out well done (grey throughout). I asked for them to make me another filet cooked correctly and they brought out a new york strip hibachi plate and tried to pass it off as filet. That dishonesty cost them a loyal customer.
I have been a loyal diner for years because of their good service and consistency in cooking steak correctly. I can forgive the one off mistakes but the fact they thought they could pass a new york strip as a filet tears it for me. Don't lie to your customers. I've eaten plenty of your filets and strips to know the difference. The few dollars you tried to save by not cooking another filet properly has now cost you thousands of dollars of future business from myself, my friends and my family. It's sad because until today Nikugen was my top restaurant.

We came here for dinner last night so was excited to try it from all the good reviews. But it was quite disappointing. We ordered edamame, 2 Nikugen spicy black garlic ramen with curly noodles, sushi combo, Kori Katsu, and tuna and salmon nigiri. Ramen broth was flavorful but ok, Spice 3/5. Noodles were cooked well & tasted okay but portion on the small side. Pork belly /Char sui was bland & overcooked. Bamboo did not taste fresh and had the canned taste. For its size and flavor I did not think the Ramen was worth $16. Sushi combo had a lot of food but definitely was not fresh. The chicken Kori Tatsu was breaded well but not seasoned very well even for me. Overall, food was okay and sushi was low quality.
But our waitress was very attentive, understanding (of kid speak too lol), and very on point. We got our drinks quickly and our food in a very timely manner. I give her kudos especially taking care of so many tables.

I don’t live near the area but I might have to come back or return when I am because it’s worth the drive! Service was great and the place is nice too.
We tried the ramen and udon but did not get the chance to try the sushi or their steak, I’ll have to come back next time for it.

The meal started off great with the Spicy Karaage. After that it went down hill…
The spicy chili salmon hand roll oddly didn’t taste like anything and it was majority rice with alittle filling.
Then came the Spicy Black Garlic Ramen.. extremely disappointing. Now I have had some really good ramen in DFW. But this was an extreme disappointment.. after the garlic flavor there was nothing else to the broth. The only thing this bowl had going for it was the chashu. Other than that… it was bad..

One of my FAVORITE spots in Frisco! The food and service are always immaculate and I find myself recommending Nikugen to people looking for a solid spot for feel good Japanese food. If you’re not looking for ramen I HIGHLY recommend the Chicken Hibachi. That’s one of my go-to’s for the past year or so. 10/10 can’t stress enough how good this place is!

I got the takoyaki and black garlic ramen. The takoyaki was huge and juicy, and had fresh fish flakes on it. I could tell the takoyaki must've been made in house. The black garlic ramen was also good. The soup was flavorful and the pork tasted great. The noodles were thin and delicious too. The soup is too rich for me to drink.
I also got the spicy shrimp ramen. It was delicious. My bf got the chicken katsu and liked it. I liked the salad that came with his katsu. He also got the spicy ramen, but prefer black garlic more.
I got the gyu and pork chasu. The gyu (beef) one was very juicy and hard to take a bite from. I liked the pork chasu more.

Food was okay. We ordered gyu katsu, black garlic ramen and akai spicy udon. Both ramen and udon base had strong flavors. The beef katsu is not deep fried/fully cooked so you have to grill it by yourself. It’s kind of fun but we are not so good at it. We also ran out of “heat” before we got all beef grilled. Overall it was a good experience.

Ordered the spicy ramen, Nikugen Akai Udon with fried chicken, and spicy edamame. The spicy ramen was very good. It comes with pork, which was very tender. Personally, I think it was a bit overdone. The udon was also very good. The broth was thick and very tasty. The chicken was go good, I could have eaten just that and been satisfied. Both plates were spicy. Enough to make your nose run, but not so hot to ruin the meal. I've not eaten at many ramen or udon restaurants, but I will say these dishes have been my favorite so far. The edamama was good, too. The restaurant is very clean and has a nice atmosphere. The staff was friendly. Our waiter was very attentive as well. I'm definitely coming back.

First time here - we will be back. We usually go to Densetsu for Sushi or MahJong for Asian cuisine and gave this place a try for it's good reviews and variety. Sushi rolls were large and delicious, with excellent presentation. Ramen was as good as we have had anywhere. Potato app was excellent. Flavors and textures were top notch. Enjoyable, quaint atmosphere. Food and service were quick.

Not a great place for vegetarians. I had fried rice and veggie ramen and the taste was just okay. They didn’t even ask if i want egg or not and spice level. Tofu in the ramen didn’t tasted good. Also there were little to no veggies in it and quantity was also little. Service was good and fast. But not a vibrant place. Their bar space was converted to sushi making place.

I was actually amazed on how delicious the food was. Can't say that I wasn't impressed from the server who asked what we liked and what type of allergies to avoid to the food landing on our table so quickly after ordering. We had the Nikugen ramen, Nikugen Sushi roll, Nikugen Fries (we like to try house specialties when we first visit a place) and they were all great! Not a single miss on any of them. On top of that our server kept coming by to check on us which .Adrian this a great experience! Needless to say, I'll definitely go back and gladly order more food from here!

I would usually go here with my family and enjoy the food but this time seemed off. The breading of the gyu katsu came out yellow, not a golden brown color and the breading wasn’t fully covering the meat, it was sparse. One of the meats didn’t even have any breading on it. Once picking up the meat to cook it over the grill the breading was falling apart and wasn’t stuck to the meat to give it its crispiness. I was highly disappointed in this as this is one of my favorite dishes to order. The Nikugen akai udon was a lot spicier than it usually is but it was still okay to eat. The servers were attentive to our requests but it was difficult sometimes getting their attention as our table was on the side near the window. We ordered an extra side of udon to add to the leftover pasta sauce but we never received it. I’m not sure if this is an off day or they have a new kitchen staff but I really hope this place hasn’t gone downhill.

Food was fine but I’ve had better ramen elsewhere. Service was off putting but other than that the atmosphere and food are decent.

I had the shrimp tempura Udon and the Black Garlic Ramen. They were both good. Service was quick despite us coming as a busy time an hour before closing.
The food tasted good, the black garlic ramen was a little salty. The Udon noodles were chewy and soft. The tempura didn't come with any special sauce so it was a bit bland on its own. The egg that came with the ramen wasn't the type that's marinated in soy, sadly.
Also, I 'liked it' but didn't 'love it's because of the price. I'm not a ramen eater so I don't really know if it's justified. Maybe a lot goes into ramen but I won't be craving it anytime soon again.

Food is amazing. Best Ramen ive ever had for years. Service was horrible. Never tells us what food she is bringing to table, never asks us if we need anything, and even started to dump all wastes to one of our bowl in front of us after we got a check. She even brought us the broken bowls. Thought she is somewhat sick or not able to talk, but we noticed that she talks to other tables. Besides the waitress attitude, everything was perfect. I guess she is being racist and intentionally being rude to us by just ignoring us.

It's a decent spot to grab ramen. Lots of variety - multiple ramen, udon, sushi, and hibachi choices. The food was all pretty good. The service unfortunately was not. Our server was in a mood from the beginning and it just never got better. Rude service just ruins a dining experience for me. But at least the food was good.

Go here for the Chashu Bao Buns—they’re phenomenal!!! My Asian wife and I came here just based off the reviews. Our server Spencer was super kind and helpful and made the rec on the buns. We had the Chashu Bao, Black Garlic Ramen, and Guy-Katsu. The Chashu Baos were by far the winner. We would come back and order two orders each with maybe a salad and soup and call it a meal. They were savory and not too sweet with the right ratio of bun to filling. The ramen was good but not the best ever. If you really want the gyu-katsu it’s a good experience and the yum yum sauce is very good to make a bowl with.

First time impression, pretty good food.
Got the Nikugen ramen and a side of friend rice that you can get with the soups for $2. Otherwise an individual side of fried rice is $4 on its own.
The ramen was good. The taste was milder than others I've had, not as salty or oily. I asked for spicy but I think they forgot to add it but not a deal breaker. They're generous with the chasu on the ramen bowl I got. They give 5 pieces that were cooked well but on the thinner and leaner side. Some places only give you like 2 pieces but thicker and fattier. Matter of preference.
Worth another try here and would come again.

We got the nikugen shiro udon with tempura chicken, a black garlic ramen, and a gyu-katsu. The food was amazing. The nikugen shiro udon was very creamy and flavorful. It came with a decent amount of chicken, bacon, and mushroom. The creamy sauce will definitely fill you up. The black garlic ramen was also very flavorful. The star of the show was definitely the gyu-katsu. Just watching the beef cutlet sizzle in front of you is satisfying. It paid very well with the sauce it came with. We went with the 10oz portion and it was a good amount for two people. Highly recommended.

Very disappointed with the noodles. It was overcooked that makes super soft. Not only happened to my soup noodles but for the other 3 of my friends. Really have some quality control problem to cook the ramen. Soup & meat are good that's why I gave 2 stars. Hope they can correct the overcook Ramen problem.
2nd time there. This time I went for dinner. It is totally surprise that ramen is good (not overcook as last time). Big improvement. So I gave 3 stars now. Hope it will be consistent.

My personal opinion. The place is nice. Atmosphere is amazing but not like “wow”. I went during dinner time. It’s a casual atmosphere not too noisy and great for a date. The service is amazing and perfect. They always help and attend to your needs. Then again, we kept waving for them. The food though, I would say is subpar. I got the Miso Yasi Ramen. It was good however, it was too salty for me. I got a headache afterwards. The portion size was the right amount for the price. It was just the taste is too overwhelming for me. I’m not a person who enjoys salty food. I tasted better ramen at more affordable places. I would say it’s more American based than that authentic cuisine. Overall, I would recommend to someone Americanized that is not going for authentic.

Amazing ramen place with authentic and delicious options. All the appetizers are good, each ramen has it's own standout flavor, you can change the type of noodles you want, and the service is great. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for some authentic ramen!

We ordered the black garlic ramen and the creamy white udon with fried chicken on top. Both were very tasty with decent portion sizes and the presentation was also taken into consideration. The ramen wasn't overly salty or fatty like some other ramen that I have had. The garlic oil was prominent and complimented the other parts of the ramen like the green onions, bamboo shoots, and mushrooms. The pork slices were crispy and fatty which I thought was really good compared to drier, leaner pieces I've had. The only issue I had was that I not a fan of the red ginger that came with it, but that is my personal preference. The udon came with a lot of mushrooms and bacon so I can tell they did not skimp out on the toppings. It had a nice chew to it that wasn't gummy or tough. I thought the fried chicken on top was tender and juicy but overall, average. We came in on a weekday for lunch when they were about to close, so it was a slow day, but the service was still accommodating. The atmosphere was nice and dim, but I did not pay attention to it much during my quick lunch. I would want to come back to try their sushi or gyu-katsu for a longer dinner.

We don't live close to Frisco, but when we come back to the area we will definitely be returning customers.

Took my niece and daughter here for a quick lunch. Asked food to come out quickly since we had to get somewhere fast. Waiter definitely helped with quick service. Upon getting our food a couple of chicken pieces fell to the ground but waiter got another order to fix the mishap. Professional service, attitude and follow-up when a unfortunate situation happened.
Great staff training and customer service 👏.

Went tonight. Sushi chef was great and the server was a doll, she was very attentive. Definitely going back. Tuna sashimi was on point and so was the salmon tower. Daughter loved the cashu bun thing, so good. Seriously, try and see.

I got to Gyu Katsu, i have never had a piece of steak so flavorless in my life. Highly disappointed in my meal. I would only get ramen or sushi if I come back again

Downgrading the original 5-star review to 2-stars due to the horrible service this time. The young man didn't have an attitude problem but was completely aloof. He had to be reminded multiple times to bring for bowls for sharing and when in standby mode was either watching the TV or had his back turned to us so we couldn't get his attention when we needed something. He also failed to submit my father's order to the kitchen. When we asked him about it after the inexplicably long wait, he admitted his mistake but wasn't apologetic about it. 20% gratuity was automatically added yet having him facilitate the meal made our dining experience worse than if everything were self-service.

Nikugen is a hidden gem in the DFW suburbs. With a variety of options, my family was able to enjoy different dishes and was left full and happy. Everything tastes amazing, the staff is nice, the place is well kept and classy, and the price is reasonable.

Had high hope but food wasn't on par to other Ramen places in the area.
Service was definitely sub-par. Our server was turning away from the table before I could finish my sentences each time.
Overall, a bit disappointed and don't think it offers much over other restos in the area that offer similar dishes.

Visit this restaurant frequently. Prices are good, everything on the menu is delicious, and service is always top-notch. The only downside is their unusual business hours, but my group of friends is always happy to plan around it as it's enough of a treat to be worth it.

Great food but awful service. Wasn't served cutlery, wasn't asked if all the food came out well, wasnt even asked for another drink, I had to wait for a long time and call multiple times to get another beer. But the food was delicious. The fried chicken and spicy shrimp pasta in pork broth was yummy. Highly recommend.

Let the lady in the front know I was leaving the restaurant for a second and was chased out, and told to come back and pay, was very unprofessional! I’m black by the way don’t know if that had to do with it. Also the nikugen ramen taste kinda weird.

We ordered the Nikugen ramen with grilled pork belly, and the spicy shrimp garlic ramen which had just the right amount of kick. Both dishes were delicious, with perfectly cooked noodles and well-seasoned broth. The grilled pork bellies were tender and flavorful, while the shrimp was fresh and succulent.
The atmosphere of the restaurant was lively, but not too crazy, The decor was modern and sleek. The service was excellent, with attentive and friendly staff who were knowledgeable about the menu and provided helpful recommendations.

We tried out Nikugen, my oldest daughter loved the shrimp tempura and miso soup (she asks to go back all the time for that!) The steak and scallop hibachi was good. Husband didn’t really care for the gyu-Katsu. my youngest had the shiro udon dish which tasted like Alfredo (none of us were big fans of that). We’ll be back to try out some different dishes - they have a lot of variety on the menu, the place is clean and the service was good.

Very good. I wanted to try Ramen tonight, for the first time, and decided to come here. It was my & my two children (10 & 8). We ordered edmame & shrimp tempura to start. I got the Spicy Shrimp Ramen and my two littles got the shrimp tempura roll & Chefs Roll (forgot exact name). Everyone loved their food... even had to get a second order of edamame for my son. We will definitely be back.

So good! We got the black garlic ramen (no ginger) and the spicy shrimp ramen. Both were so good. It comes with straight noodle but I always substitute for the curly noodles 🍜 the broth was rich and flavorful, the egg was cooked perfectly. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was how small of a pour you get when you order wine🤔 it was way below a 6 or 8oz pour. I would recommend everyone try this place!
