Ocean Sushi and Ramen This place leans more toward trendy vibes than exceptional service. The sushi itself was fresh and tasted great, so the food quality is not an issue. However, the overall experience left much to be desired.
The biggest drawbacks were the lack of staff training and operational inefficiency. The servers were not knowledgeable about the menu, and we had to explain the sushi plates they offered, which is frustrating as a customer. On top of that, the hostess struggled to manage wait times and tables, causing long delays and flustered interactions.
The menu is overwhelming and feels overcomplicated. A streamlined focus on core items could improve the experience. Adding to the confusion, we were handed an old menu without any heads-up, leading to multiple drink orders being unavailable.
While this might be one of the few trendy spots in Friendswood with decent food, the service and management issues make it feel overrated. It’s a “one and done” for me.

If you are thinking about trying this place out, spot thinking and just go! Husband and I had our first date night out since having our baby and we cannot wait to go back! We sat at the sushi bar, service was outstanding. I wish I caught her name because she was on it! We started with some drinks and Brussel sprouts, so good! We ordered a dragon roll and sushi for two. We’ve eaten at many sushi places and this was by far the best. Extremely fresh, wonderful flavor. Can’t wait to go back and try more!

My friend and I had dinner here and it was a pleasant experience. The food came out quickly, the freshness of sushi / sashimi were good, however, I wish it could be a little bit less cold and freeze feeling, I prefer sashimi melt in my mouth. I forgot the name, but the best roll we tried was something with cajun (in roll/hand-roll section). Kim Chi Ramen was interesting, they had a split into two bowls option if one bowl is too much for one person, we were happy to divide our food that way. I think they have really good lunch menu at affordable price. Not too crowded in the weekday evening, staff were nice and attentive. We will come back to try lunch menu some day.

Me and my boyfriend were craving sushi in the area and thought we would try a new restaurant. We were hesitant to go in because the parking lot seemed empty, however I am glad we took a chance and dined in.
Upon entering, we were greeted to some cute decor. Walking in, the restaurant seemed very spacious, clean, and beautiful.
Our waiter was Jenny. She was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. We went with most of her recommendations. We got 1) King crab special roll, 2) Oahu roll, 3) Kyle Special, 4) bluefin tuna truffle, and 5) takoyaki.
I will leave the ratings down below:
King crab roll 5/5: My boyfriend's favorite roll! This was an elevated version of a tempura roll. It has a bit of spice, but it complements the roll well. I personally found this a bit heavy but I know this will be a lot of people's favorite!
Oahu roll 4/5: Me and my boyfriend's least favorite roll. We could tell the quality of the fishes were very good. However, the roll was lacking sauce. The king crab roll and the Oahu roll came with (an in-house?) ponzu sauce. Even with the ponzu sauce and soy sauce, the roll was very bland and lackluster.
Kyle Special roll 4.5/5: My personal favorite roll (yes, even though I rated it less than the king crab roll). This roll was very refreshing, but I know it is not everyone's cup of tea. It is not a typical roll with the heavy sauce and umami flavors, but is very light and fresh. I would say there was a smidgen of too many raw onions, but my boyfriend thought it was the perfect amount.
Bluefin tuna truffle 4.8/5: ALMOST perfect in my opinion! I think the sauce at the bottom was a tad too salty for my taste. My boyfriend with saltier tastebuds than me found it perfect! Jenny told us they just shipped the tuna like 2-3 days ago so the fish was fresh! Would 10/10 order this again though! My favorite dish that I ordered today.
Takoyaki 4/5: Would be a 5/5 if they had about 2-3x more sauce.
Overall, love the ambience, service, and food! I am happy that there is good sushi in this area and I will definitely be back!

I Really Enjoyed the food at Ocean Sushi & Raman! The Houston Roll is definitely something I’m coming back to try again. Our waitress Maya was very attentive. One of my friends I was eating with is a Very picky eater and she helped him decide what to eat. She even looked up the pictures on google of what the food might look like if it didn’t have a picture in the menu. She really didn’t have to do that, but she did! Awesome customer service and food!

My family and I went to try this restaurant last night.
First I would like to say that it was so packed that the poor waiters and waitresses were running into people's purses for just trying to get through.
All of our food came out cold and one at a time. The portions were tiny compared to the price. I ordered the katsu curry and I hardly had any rice or curry on my plate. I feel like the portion sizes are cheap compared to paying $20+ for one meal.
The food was good it was just ruined by being cold.
I probably won't be coming back as there are other restaurants for a better price and portion size.

One of the best sushi places I've been to. Our son suggested it and it was great. A special roll was made with black rice and it was a favorite. Hopefully it is permanently added to menu.

1. Family friendly, this is a Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and alcoholic drinks, but it is also very kid-friendly. Kids menu and crayon drawing kits, what's even more surprising! They have kid chopstick grips for disposable chopsticks! 2. Service, Lindsay and all other staff are very kind and friendly! 3. Food, most Japanese restaurants I've been to in the US (except in places with a lot of people, like Hawaii or Little Tokyo in LA) are far from authentic. And while this is not as authentic as the sushi in Japan, you won't find wasabi in the nigiri, but on the side, it tastes like wasabi powder. But this restaurant still beats 95% of sushi restaurants in the Houston area. At these prices, you can feel the sincerity of the owner in both the quality of the fish and the portion size, and you can also see his attention to detail in the seasoning, plating, and tableware. 4. Some suggestions, I noticed that you used fresh shiso leaves, it would be better if you put two more leaves, I like to use it to wrap sashimi and put it in my mouth, just like fresh wasabi, it can bring out the sweetness of the fish itself, if the fish is in good condition, I usually don't add soy sauce. If you can get fresh wasabi, I really don't mind paying a little more for it.

We (family of 4) sat down and waited 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us, but no one ever came to greet us. The place wasn't at capacity, but fairly busy for a Tuesday evening. We left. As we were leaving, we mentioned that no one had greeted us to the hostess, and she just shrugged it off and told us goodbye. I won't try again.

Wanted to try this place for the first time last night for take out. I was expecting the food to taste spectacular, especially with all the good ratings. The ramen had no taste too it, the pork in it was hard as a rock like it was over cooked. I got more noodles than I did broth. I couldn’t finish it cause it was that nasty. Got a crazy roll, which did not taste good either. I would not recommend this place to anyone unless they want to dine in and experience the atmosphere. Other than that the food is horrible, you can go somewhere else for the same price and have better tasting food.

update 12/19/23: came back a year later to try their sushi and was a bit disappointed. the prices also went up a bit since I last came. I got their sushi and sashimi lunch, and the fish tasted old, not fresh at all, sort of like a sour-ish taste lingering - didn't end up finishing this. their specialty rolls were alright, but a bit pricey. for friendswood it's okay, but I don't think I'd rec eating here for sushi if you can make the drive to Houston. review for some ramen below - prices incr by ~$1 since last.
Jan 2023: came back for the holiday season and was surprised to find this new restaurant ! for a small town like friendswood, I'd say this place is a gem - perfect spot for dates, family dinners, or group gatherings (they have a semi-private tatami room w/ floor cushion seating). leaving an open star for when I try their sushi, but their ramen was pretty decent, maybe not my #1 favorite, but I'd return for more. we tried the shio tonkotsu ($15), sapporo miso ($15), and hakata red ($16) - was a little disappointed that the Sapporo wasn't spicy though, despite having a pepper symbol next to it (would highly suggest the hakata though). also tried their lycheetini (lychee martini $12) which tasted like a lychee soju (personally not for me, but I'll give their mules a shot next time). we were seated almost immediately for a table of 3, and our server, kaitlyn, was very kind throughout our dinner. overall impressed - fairly priced items imo for the freshness and authenticity in their creations - I would say it's the better ramen around town and excited to try their sushi !

This is a great local Sushi and Ramen location in the heart of Friendswood. Located very close to the McDonalds on 518 for reference. Always a crowd at the restaurant, but not hard to get a seat at the same time. Nice bar, friendly staff. TV's to watch the game etc... Sushi has always been fresh and the Ramen is very good. And if your knees can take it they have a room that is more traditional Japanese dining.

The newly hired host was very personable. But there is a stinch resembling propane that's present as soon as you walk into the resturant. The smell was off putting enough to make me second guess ordering. The decorum is esthetically appealing but the room could use more lighting. I ordered a Hawaii role. For the price paid I expected a larger sized item but, a single roll was about the size of a quarter. I can't recall the number of pieces. The condiments of ginger and Wasabi were also a much smaller serving than most other sushi restaurants. If I make future visits to this business I hope the odor, lighting and portion sizes have improved.

My only fear in leaving this review is that it aides in making this place too busy to get into. Yet, I have to do it. What a fantastic restaurant! The sushi is fresh and delicious and some of the different takes on preparation are mind blowing! Every item I have tried was fantastic! the toro dumplings might be one of the best sushi dishes I have ever had! On our last visit I also had Ramon and this might be one of the few times I have Ramen and I was not overcome by salt to the point I don't taste anything else. This might be a hidden gem based on the location but it deserves the notoriety of any large upscale place. I may never eat sushi anywhere else.

Ocean sushi and Ocean sushi and ramen have the best fresh sushi in the area hands down. Ive been eating sushi for over 20 years in many states and restaurants within those states and Ocean is top tier. Almost like the original location but you can also order ramen. Staff is friendly and attentive. Food is always quality. Other guests can be a bit obnoxious, every time I've been other guests have been loud and disruptive but that isn't the restaurant's fault. Fantastic sushi, best you'll get in the area. It's a bit bigger on the inside than their first location but still absolutely packed with tables, the only thing I wish was different would be to have a little more space.

i love sushi i love ramen i love it all. prices were okay, the ramen is pricier than my go to place!! but i thought the sushi was good. not amazing but it was good. decent!! we got crab puffs and they were so delicious and hot. it came with a generous amount of six so it was plenty for us two. we got the shaggy roll and it was good!! i got a spicy salmon handroll in which i was expecting more of a nigiri/sashimi situation but it was more minced which i would prefer chunks instead of a glob. tasted fresh and it was not spicy at all. i did wish it was spicy and more flavorful because more chunky salmon would have been more ideal for me personally. we had shrimp shui mai and it was okay. i had a lot of shui mai before and it was warm, not exciting to be honest. it did not give me that “pop” like typical shui mai does with an explosion of flavor. tasted like shrimp. fishy and not exciting. we first decided on getting 3 different rolls for around $18 and they all tasted the exact same. we sent it back since there was absolute no difference in them, specially since they were made of different proteins. got a hot n sour soup with it and it was flavorful. hot and lots of fun different taste. i think this place was decent but it is difficult finding a genuinely good restaurant in more of a suburban area than a city. interior was beautiful and super vibey! clean everywhere with space. it did get pretty busy. would i come back? no.. i dont think this is the best sushi in town, and the food we got were 50/50.

This is an excellent spot. I have eaten at many Japanese and sushi spots. Ocean definitely can hold it's own. I was pleasantly surprised with the decor. I really wanted to like this place but they were a disappointment. Told the guy on the phone no fried leeks per the menu online. So I got fried panko all inside my roll with this on the receipt… and there wasn’t panko listed anywhere on the menu description.

The ambiance is on point and familiar. Hakata ramen was a delight. My wife loves their crazy roll and their sweet potato roll.
I keep coming back.

Love this place. Food is very tasty. However the gnats are a problem. Two in my salad last night and had to constantly swat them away. Needs to be treated asap!

The food and service are the best. Rachel is fantastic!

Wish they had an option of chicken broth only with ramen like other places

This last visit to this restaurant i found that the sashimi had little to no flavor, the only thing that gave it flavor was the soy sauce. For the first time ever, I did not like the sashimi. Additionally. I like to watch the sashimi bring prepared, rather than being prepared out of sight.

Awesome food. Friendly staff. Chloe (my waitress) knew what to suggest, knew the food and how it's served. Couldn't ask for a better lunch.

Yum!!! We sat at the bar because it was crowded. Everything we ate was delish!! Brussel sprouts... Just amazing! We ordered pineapple fried rice... My husband says best fried rice ever. Crazy Roll was so good.. sushi worth eating! Hector the bartender was superb!

A tad bit expensive but the best ramen l've ever had, normally it's so salty! But not here. The seafood ramen is amazing, both of them.

I had the Hakata ramen. It was spicy (just the way I like it) and delicious. If you like ramen, you’ll like Ocean Sushi & Ramen.

Went in on a Friday was told there would be a 40 minute wait but we were seated early. Food was good, it’s nice to have something so close to home. The only 2 critiques we have are no kids menu or smaller portions available and our food all came out at different times which left the kids hungry and restless. I wouldn’t call this a “family friendly” restaurant. Servers and staff were all very nice and attentive.

First timer here! Will definitely be a repeat customer… everything was amazing! Food, service, quality, wait, atmosphere!!! Give it a try! Wish I lived closer…

We ordered to go and when the meals were ready, nobody told my husband it was ours so it sat there. The hot and sour soup was ok and the lemon grass seafood soup was flavorful but the seafood was overcooked. The house salad were awful with yellow or wilted lettuce, mushy cucumber slice and one shriveled grape tomato. The dressing was quite good and I saved it to put on some green lettuce another day. Next time we will try something different, but other reviews had us expecting more.

Absolutely a stand out sushi experience! Each piece was extremely fresh and delicious. I highly recommend their uni shots (yes, they actually have uni). We will be back very soon to try more of the menu. I will not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone wanting first class sushi!

We have been looking for a place in the area with good sushi and ramen and have never been able to find that spot until today. The ambiance and music feels euphoric and makes you feel you are somewhere completely different. We recommend the Pork Buns and Spicy Garlic Edamame(add soy to it and by the time you get to the bottom you have a delicious dipping sauce for your food) for warm appetizers. The quality is top-notch and matches the prices perfectly. Totally perfect for date nights too!! 10000% coming back :>

Love the lemongrass soup and the air first one roll… uni shots were 7/10, would be 10/10 if add quail egg, large fish egg…. But better than most restaurants. Azuma in Sugarland has the best uni shots. My husband is harder to please, but overall we enjoyed the atmosphere a lot which means a lot when going to eat. Thank you and we will be back. Ps. Everyone working there was very nice.

I've been here twice now, the first time I got sushi and the second time I tried the ramen. Both were delicious, the hakata red ramen had a great heat level to it. Highly recommend.

Always very friendly and attentive staff. The food is amazing, and the decor is very cool. I love the sushi and the soup, and my partner says the Ramen is also amazing. They have great mochi too!

Very expensive for the amount you get. A tiny two pieces of soft shell crab the size of half my palm is $15. The roll is also half the size of rolls compared to other sushi restaurants. And the taste isn't anything special either. We love sushi and have been to almost every place that has great reviews. But absolutely not this place. Won't come back again.

My wife and I visited the Ocean Sushi & Ramen and it was fantastic. The Shoyu ramen was delicious. Our server, Angelina was great and attentive to detail. The interior looks beautiful with a modern atmosphere.

We went into Ocean on the recommendation of a few friends. It was popping on Friday night in Friendswood. The place is gorgeous. Their moon lamp is so pretty when you first walk in. We got the crazy roll and the cowboy roll. They were both yummy. The crazy roll is similar to shaggy dog. The cowboy roll was shrimp and filet mignon torched with a spicy BBQ. It litterally tasted like a BBQ chip it was so good. We had the fried shrimp rice, and it was delicious too
The drinks were good I tried the guava flower and enjoyed it.

Great place! My family has eaten here a few times. All of the Ramen is really good, wife had a few different sushi roles she really liked. Miso soup was spot on and seaweed salad was nice fresh and crispy. The atmosphere is pretty chill and the bar has a good selection for most anyone. I will go here again. Excellent quality for the price.

My husband and I recently visited this restaurant. And it did not disappoint. We have had many ramen dishes before but this one was different in a very good way. The flavors were fantastic. And they use a different marinade for their soft boiled eggs. Also our waitress was wonderful. She constantly checked on us. Was always polite. We highly recommend this establishment and will definitely be returning.

I lived in the Bay Area for 7 years and this was the best ramen I’ve ever had hands down. The sushi was the best I’ve had in Houston. Excellent ingredients and competes with the most expensive restaurants in Houston and beats them!
