This is hands down one of the best sushi
restaurants, if not the best. I randomly picked a seasonal special and it turned out to be the most flavorful nigiri I’ve ever eaten. While some items on the daily specials menu come with eye-popping prices—like a $40 caviar toast—I’m now seriously tempted to try them next time.

The truffle risotto with tuna was absolutely divine, rich and creamy, though it was so indulgent I had to pack the rest to take home. The presentation was beautiful, and the tiny spoon was adorable. Even the green tea was served in a heavy metal teapot that made the whole experience feel authentic.

The space itself almost felt like a bunker-with stone walls and floors. Aside from that, I highly recommend a try for an unforgettable dining experience.

The dinner was incredible and our waiter was beyond knowledgeable. Almost too much so but he was great.

We got the Fire Salmon, best thing I ate all night.
Ate an array of sushi, and I ate an Entire Chicken Katsu bc it was so delicious.

I can't find much of a fault here. A little pricey but id say it's worth it.

I'll come back here for special occasions. Not an every weekend joint.

Love this place for the food, and I’m not a big environmentalist and I feel kinda silly but I have come here at least 5 times since last year and the urinal in the men’s restroom runs non stop. Quick math. 2 gals per minutes running not stop for a month is 80,640 per mo and almost a million per year…. Seems like such a waste… can y’all fix this?

Other than food is solid and place has great service.

We've been to Soto Cedar Park several times and we have never left disappointed. We went Saturday 11/15 for my husband's birthday. Masa and Sean were absolutely amazing. They recommended some off menu items and they were absolutely delicious. The fish is always fresh and service is always top notch. Thank you Masa and Sean for the amazing birthday dinner, it's one we won't soon forget!

We’ve dined here 5x the past 2 years. Food is absolutely delicious. Great presentation as well. Chef choice nigiri is excellent.

Portions are small and on the higher end of the price range but overall worth it.

Docked a star on atmosphere and service because we were seated close to the wait staff area and a waiter was chatting with someone and dropping F-bombs. I flagged the behavior and it was corrected. Very happy we didn’t have our granddaughter with us this time.

On a business trip in Austin and found Soto near hotel. Monday has all day happy hour so took advantage of the deal. Overall very good meal, from the Ebi tempura to the Chef’s Nigiri special. I especially liked that the nigiri rice was minimal and well seasoned. The hamachi kama was well seasoned and delicious. Will definitely come back on next trip to Austin.

The ambience is very nice for small private meals. The food was very tasty. Two things i'd improve

(1) the consitency of service: we ordered almost the whole happy hour menu for us to taste and some of the dishes came out with explanation and some of them did not.

(2) slight re-edit to the menu: some of the dishes were too similar to each other.

We wanted to celebrate our anniversary at a nice place, so we came here based on a friend’s recommendation. The restaurant has a spacious interior and a great atmosphere. We tried the famous Fire Salmon and the Chef’s Choice 10-piece Nigiri. The fish was fresh and delicious, but the price felt a bit high for the portion size. If you know what sushi is, don't eat here. The weirdest mix of food with fried sushi and sweet flavors was extreme. Regular rolls that I ordered were too salty regardless of the type of roll it was.

Food is pretty decent; however, service is mid at best. When the server doesn't even try to help answer the question. "Sorry, I can't help." But the lack of effort to even try to assist with a question what is the problem. Also, places like this food is good but service is what patrons pay for and this lack of service is beyond the price point. Would I go here again based on price v service v food quality? Most likely a hard pass.

Soooooo good. Had the pleasure of coming here last year for a birthday, And had to come back for my own this year.

Food is so clean and good. While living on the west coast, I got spoiled with good sushi, and this is some of the best in austin.

Highly recommend the land and sea roll, Torched Wagyu, Spicy Tuna, Serrano, Avocado

I've also never been a fan of Brussel sprouts, but wow I could eat that appetizer all day.

Great service as well, waiter was very knowledgeable and had a bunch of specials as well that were not listed online.

My wife doesn't eat sushi and they had a vegetarian menu as well.

A little on pricey side, but would be a fabulous evening.

Soto is always our place to go to for good sushi. We always had good service. However, today wasn't our day. We got seated, and we waited 10 minutes with no one to wait on us. And got a waitress immediately.

Wow! Soto is amazing and have some delicious sushi and seafood. I’ve been a couple of times in the past, but don’t remember it tasting this great. The place is located inside a strip mall and there’s just one door going in, you don’t realize how big it is until you’re actually inside. It’s a narrow restaurant with an area upfront and another section in the back. So it can seat a lot of people. We ordered a lot of food off the menu. The Crab Rangoon was amazing. We also ordered the Truffle Risotto and it was so good, we ordered another dish. They offer several drinks and while my wife had wine, I tried some cocktails. The lychee margarita, didn’t taste like a margarita and it seemed to be more of a fruit juice type flavor. It was good, but not what I expected. My second drink I ordered the Japanese margarita which was OK too, but not amazing. We ordered several rolls in our favorites were the Fire Salmon and Chili Hamachi. The food at this place is incredible! I will totally be back here again and will hit the lunch menu because I’ve heard a lot of great things about it. Next time I’ll take pictures. Overall one of the best sushi places in the area!

This was one of the first restaurants we went to when we moved to 620. This was 6 or 7 years ago. So this updated review is long over due.

I couldn't tell you how many times we have been here, but I can tell you we have never had a bad experience. We have gone for lunch during the week, many Monday all day happy hours, and several weekend dinners. We have celebrated my birthday here on multiple occasions. Taken our boat charter captains (Nauti ATX Charters), family and friends. We have even taken our 18 month old over the last year and a half. I mention this because not once did we ever feel unwelcome when we arrived after a day out on the lake or with our young child. Being a new parent is not easy and fortunately every server has been wonderful towards him. If you're looking to bring your kiddo yes they have high chairs available.

My two favorite items to get for Monday Happy Hour are the Chili Hamachi and Tuna Truffle. We almost always get a Miso and Truffle Edamame for appetizers. My favorite roll is their Hamachi Apple because it's so light and refreshing. Very unique in flavor. Hubs likes octopus and their soft shell crab. We both love their Chilean Sea Bass. I don't believe it's on the menu but our wonderful server Kevin (ask for him, he's great!) recommended Toro Tataki. One of our new favorites! If you're looking for something non-sushi related I cannot recommend TRUFFLE RISOTTO W/A5 WAGYU or UNI PASTA enough!! Easily in my top 10 dishes I've ever ate at any restaurant. I couldn't tell you which dessert to pick because we have had all their desserts almost every time we have been and loved them every time.

Soto is our favorite sushi place and top 5 restaurants in the Austin area.

I've been here a couple times. The food is ok. I like some of their signature dishes. However, I often have unwelcoming, rather rude experiences with their manager. He did not look us in the eye when we got there. Instead, he muttered to the host to seat us at the "very, very end" of the sushi bar (which was facing some awkwardly placed wooden boards instead of the actual sushi bar) despite there being 5+ seats in the middle of the sushi bar. Weird experience. We just decided to leave before we even sat down.

On another occasion, I ordered takeaway through their website on July 4th, and despite both their website and Google saying they were open, they were not. No indication AT ALL, and I only found out by driving to the place and trying to open their locked doors. This place dgaf

This is the best Japanese restaurant in the Austin area. Both omaksi and special menu. The things I have tried are sushi and sashimi fresh fish. Everything I have tried is excellent with a great garnish. I have tried a special menu like rizoto and Pasta. My favorite is grilled chillean sea bass. My wife has tried Maki and also tempora. The tempura has a great taste. For desert, I have tried tiramisu and fruit tart. They have great saki and different quality wine. The service is great. Explain the contents of each dish. I had multiple lunches and tasted most of the items I am familiar with. Soon I will try their omakasi.

This was by far the best high quality sushi restaurant i've ever been in Austin area! We had the Agedashi Tofu as an appetizer, Uni Pasta and Sushi & Sashimi combo for an entree. The taste was amazing. I've never had Sushi & Sashimi Lunch Combo come out that luxurious!! and the taste, I can't even start with it.. just the PERFECTION....

We've been to uchi or other high end restaurants and we always return home with some emptiness and hungry stomach but this place gives you plenty of food that will fill you up quickly. I guarantee you'll leave this place with high satisfactions.
We also had the two desserts which was the Yuzu Ball (2) and Green Tea Tiramisu. It was so cute and very delicious!!

Also we weren't 100% sure but we were guessing that manager has comped our Tiramisu which was SOO kind of you!!
I couldn't say thank you for your kindness and care before we leave but next time we see you we'll thank you for sure!!

Lastly, the service was top tier!! our server has explained the layout of the menu and kindly took care of us! very nice! I felt bad that I couldn't leave more tips!

We ordered the Udon soup; it was boiling hot, burned my tongue; it took us 15 minutes to be able to eat the damn soup. We told the waiter and he just smiled and did not care.
Do not order the Miso soup, they give you a baby size cup for $4.

Pros: Good atmosphere
Cons: Dangerous very hot meal, place is expensive overall and some serving sizes are small for the price

Sushi Experience №121

I have been eating sushi for nearly 50 years, all over the U.S. and in several countries in Europe and Asia, including many times in Japan. My wife and I have had sushi in numerous Austin sushi restaurants, including Uchi and Uchiko. Soto is clearly one of the best in Austin, up there with Uchi and Uchiko but not as wildly expensive. Our waiter, Timothy, was gracious and knowledgeable and we let him select our first several dishes based on the fresh fish that had just arrived from the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo. I wish I could remember all the wonderful dishes we had but I am old and forget! But they were all splendid. We resisted dunking any in soy sauce which tends to obliterate the delicate fish flavors and the sauces and/or toppings which come with about all of them. The setting and ambiance are lovely and reminiscent of Japan. The service is impeccable and the prices, while higher than your run-of-the-mill sushi bar, not outrageously high. This is an experience not to be missed.

ADDENDUM: We went back yesterday, during happy hour. Our waiter, Sean, was every bit as knowledgeable regarding ALL the diverse sushi offerings. We had a wide diversity of sushi, many recommended by Sean, some seasonal specials. All outstanding. Soto is every bit as good as Uchiko, which we have frequented numerous times. And, it is almost as expensive. But it is well worth it. Once again, we did not use soy as we do at traditional sushi bars but chose to enjoy the totality of the experience of the variety of toppings on the fish. We ate it "upside-down" with the fish side on our tongues. Highly recommended. Skip the soy!

Came to this Soto location for my birthday and the experience could not have gone better! We rarely dine out because we have a 2 year old, and well, if you know, you know. Well, our waitress (Yvonne) and the other servers, made us feel right at ease from the start. Food and drinks came out fast! Everything was fresh and as expected. Our son loved their sushi and especially our waitress haha My only complaint, and why this isn’t a true 5 star review, is the cocktail options. I really couldn’t find any cocktails that looked like I would love it, and the one I gave a chance to based on a recommendation was $15. Because we paid so much for it, we drank as much as we could but yeah it wasn’t great. I would have liked more fruity cocktail options. Aside from that, everything was 5 stars! We will definitely be back.

This placed was phenomenal a couple years ago, but sadly its no longer a standout imo. I used to go nearly monthly years ago. Several life events came up which prevented me from going for awhile but I returned today for the first time after a couple years and our food today included uncleaned shrimp tempura and lukewarm sushi. This place used to put a lot of care in providing a clean, fresh, and unique experience with their sushi. Now, I'm not really sure why Id come back here as it provides nearly the same sushi quality as several competitors in the area but with the same old high pricepoint from the time they were actually high quality. :(

Our server was the best part. He was friendly and attentive. The overall vibe of the place for a date is still nice as well.

Dining at Soto was an amazing experience. The sushi was fresh and garnished well. The service was phenomenal with our server providing descriptions of each piece of nigiri and the garnishes as they were served.

The Truffle Foie Gras was my absolute favorite. It simply melts in your mouth like butter and has a very unique and rich flavor that describing it with words wouldn’t do justice. I highly recommend trying it.

The Yuzu Balls are the perfect way to finish your meal if you want a light and refreshing dessert.

The Trio Nigiri is A5 Wagyu, Kama-Toro, and Foie Gras, topped with Black Truffle, Caviar, Scallions, and Gold Leaf. It’s $35 for a single piece of Nigiri, but it’s definitely worth trying. It was difficult to eat it in one bite. I noticed Soto’s Lamar location has an A5 Wagyu and Foie Gras Nigiri on their Instagram page, which I was hoping to try, but the Cedar Park location only had the Trio as an option.

These are the Nigiri I tried:

- [ ] Masu
- [ ] Kama-Toro
- [ ] Kinmedai
- [ ] Truffle Foie Gras
- [ ] Unagi
- [ ] A5 Wagyu
- [ ] Trio Nigiri
- [ ] Yuzu Balls

The fish options were much larger than any other sushi restaurant I’ve been to in Austin. Each item I ordered looked great and tasted amazing. I hope the photos I attached to this review show the level of care the chefs gave to each dish. I ordered the Omikase and it was incredible. The dishes kept coming and coming. Hats off to the sushi chefs.

Very quiet, low key place. The staff is friendly. This place is expensive but worth it. We had their land and sea roll. It was amazing. Ended up ordering another one.

As someone who frequents Soto for special occasions, it has always been my go to spot. I had very high hopes for their Valentine’s Day special, I always have had a very good dining experience here and unfortunately tonight was not the case. I am a reasonably patient person, but by no means was it okay to be waiting 45 minutes to be seated after my reserved time. Also thank you for making every dude that booked a reservation having to see the disappointment in their significant other and putting people in a sour mood to begin with. There was no apologies for the circus that they had created by over booking. I had originally booked on Monday but it didn’t go through, so I called on Tuesday and I was told they will accommodate us and our time slot was 845. Rather than simply saying we are booked for the evening and being honest, you tried to take advantage of as many people as you could. And it’s a shame, I would’ve went somewhere else and still been a customer in the future. But the true colors of this business showed and it is extremely disappointing. After coming here for years and years and spending a very large chuck of change, after that disrespect I will not be returning nor recommending this place to anyone. To have a cancellation fee on top of everything is absolutely ridiculous and made people feel obligated to stay there. If you have that fee, YOU BETTER PROVIDE THE OTHER END OF THAT SERVICE! That is a horrible way to do business and whoever decided that should be ashamed of themselves. I work very hard for my money and to get the bill of $400 with tip at the end of the night was almost a joke, especially after the fact that we waited over 30 mins to get our bill, by me going up to our waiter at the register. Do yourself a favor and try the variety of other awesome sushi places around the area, these people will take your money and brag about how they are making money hand over fist right in front of your face. Do better Soto

A chaotic valentines’s day night by overbooking.

We had to wait for 30 min after our reserved time for a mediocre dinner that does not worth the price. 10 courses meal took us 2 hr 30 min to finish, because we had to wait for an ridiculous time between the courses. Still felt hungry after all. And we smelled like cooked beef as we exit the restaurant because one of the course is hot stone wagyu beef, the smoke filled the entire room and the ventilation is so bad. And the price for two including tips is $400, will not come back.

I typically like this restaurant because the food is always great, and I love the ambience. When it comes to Valentine's Day, my significant other initially booked our "reservation" a few days before, it charged him but of course, it didn't go through with soto. He called, and they said they would accommodate for the reservation he paid for. Here we are, tonight, at soto on Valentine's Day. We get here at our reserved time of 8:45 and they tell us they overbooked, and it will still be 30 minutes. Yet if we cancel it's a charge on his card, but why wait 30 minutes on a weeknight? I'm just disappointed tbh. What is the point of a reservation if it isn't honored.

Possibly the worst experience I’ve had. We went on the Valentine’s Day special they have, which was omakase only. Had a reservation, arrived on time, and waited 50 minutes to start getting our food, and waited about 10 mins for each of the following course. Horrible, loud, and very chaotic atmosphere. The waitress was very nice but at the same time no one knows what’s going on as people are missing dishes here and there. Worst of all, the food was terrible. The sashimi/sushi were very unfresh and very low quality, rice was terrible. you can get better sushi at a random AYCE sushi place. And yea, they served the dessert before the Ishiyaki 🤷‍♂️ Considering how much you’re paying this made everything worse.
I used to like this place for their wagyu risotto, but after this visit I’m seriously considering whether I should come back or not. I understand that it can get busy during Valentine’s Day, but quality should not be sacrificed for this type of experience.

I made a reservation for my wife and I to enjoy our Valentine’s Day dinner at this establishment and figured it was going to be an amazing experience, but I was extremely wrong. The first thing we noticed as we walked in the door, on time for our reservation, is that there were at least 6 other couples looking upset and defeated standing in the lobby waiting for a table. While checking in, we were made aware that quite a few of those people were waiting for almost an hour after their reservation times and that the restaurant had overbooked. Now I won’t really get into what a reservation means, but this restaurant obviously has no clue. Anyway, we decided not to let it ruin our night and to wait (If we didn’t we would have been charged a pretty hefty cancellation fee.) We figured the experience and the food would make up for the lack of competence as far as booking goes, but when we were finally seated, we quickly realized that was not the case. I did not know that we couldn’t order, probably because it wasn’t listed anywhere except for, apparently, in fine print in an email I received after booking. (Which I read in another review, I still have not actually seen it) This was very disappointing as although my wife likes raw fish, I usually prefer cooked and we both wanted rolls. We really tried to make the best of it, but there were maybe 2 items that either of us would’ve actually ordered out of the 10 courses and, for lack of a better term, the only thing that wasn’t super mid was the sea bass. I really wish I had asked my waiter how much it was going to cost me to eat a bunch of food I did not want before being served because we would have left immediately. The food alone was $300 that you HAD to pay for, I could've taken the hit on the cancellation fee for both of us and went to a nice steakhouse and still paid less for a more enjoyable experience. The seating was also super crammed making “our” night feel like everyone’s night, as I found myself waiting for other couples to stop talking in order to speak to my wife. I came out of the restaurant feeling robbed financially and of time, but most of all of experience. This was our first Valentine’s Day as a married couple and Soto ruined it. We will never be returning and quite frankly I now resent this business.

Valentine’s Day Dinner RUINED:
My Husband decided to take us out to a Soto for a special Valentine’s dinner, and upon arrival we became very frustrated. It only went downhill from there. Upon entering the lobby, it was entirely filled with angry couples waiting to be seated. Most have been waiting 30mins - 1 hour past their reservation time; We were told a table wasn’t going to be ready for about 45 mins past our 9:15pm reservation. There were no apologies from the Hostesses/Employees considering the restaurant’s inconvenience for overbooking and not having reservations ready upon arrival. Why book a reservation in the first place if you’re going to have to wait? We were told we could “go find somewhere else” and pay about a $100/person cancellation fee, or wait until a table was ready. We have never experienced “fine dining” and decided to wait to not let it damper our evening. We eventually got seated and I was deeply disappointed in the lack of space in the neighboring tables. I could hear every conversation, and everyone around was within half an arms reach. I couldn’t have an enjoyable one-on-one time with my Husband without having to raise my voice. We waited about 20 minutes before a server even came to greet us. Eventually he came to our table and informed us that there was a pre-set menu for the night, which we were disappointed. We received our drinks after the 4th course (out of 10). Some of the dishes were phenomenal, but all in all, was very mediocre. Out of the entire time spent sitting and waiting on more food, we probably spent a total of 10 minutes eating. Portions were extremely minuscule (shared between 2 people that isn’t even enough to feed 1 person satisfyingly) that we ended up getting fast food, since it was the only option after 11pm, after paying damn near $400 for a terrible 2 hour experience. I watched couples laugh at the ridiculous overpriced bill, and saw some storm out of anger. The employees were rushing around in a very chaotic manner. I get that it was extremely busy, but they looked very unprepared. Now I work in the service industry and absolutely can understand a rush and complaints about prices, but what I will not understand is how my server goes to pick up his copy of a receipt off the table right next to us and the first thing he does is look at how much he got tipped, and made a face as if he was upset. I found that absolutely disgusting that it was done in front of customers; You should definitely expect a well tip if you’ve done your job as amazing as possible, but he underperformed for having 4 tables. I did have a nice time staring at my Husband for majority of the night, but in the end, our special night planned felt robbed and we felt scammed. I would’ve expected the establishment to be more courteous considering it’s a special night to celebrate love and life with your partner.

My boyfriend and I had reservations for months for Valentine's Day and when arrived the lobby was crowded with couples waiting and was told it was going to be 30-40 mins outside of our reservation time because it was overbooked. I have never heard of a restaurant overbooking reservations! Just out of principle I'm never eating at this establishment again if that's how they value their customers.

My fiancé and I had high hopes for Valentine's Day dinner at Soto in Cedar Park, having made our reservation well in advance and being fully aware of the $75 per person cancellation/no-show fee. This fee, steep as it is, seemed reasonable for guaranteeing a special night out. Unfortunately, our experience fell drastically short of expectations, leading to a deeply disappointing evening.

Upon our timely arrival, we were immediately struck by the scene: a crowded entryway filled with no less than 10 other dismayed couples, some of whom had been waiting 30 to 45 minutes past their reservation time. After a prolonged wait and line just to check in, the situation only worsened.

The host openly admitted to us that the restaurant had overbooked for the evening, suggesting a minimum 30 to 40 minute wait for our table--a wait that, realistically, looked to be much longer given the number of people ahead of us.

The practice of overbooking, particularly on a significant occasion like Valentine's Day, demonstrates a profound disregard for patrons' time and the meaning of reservations.

This approach not only demonstrates a lack of respect for your patrons' time and plans but also hints at a distressing level of greed, effectively 'double dipping' by charging penalties for potential no-shows while also overbooking to maximize turnout.

The fact that Soto would risk everyone's plans by overbooking, all while holding a hefty cancellation fee over our heads, is not only inconsiderate but borders on deceitful.

Feeling scammed out of a great night out and disappointed, we made the decision to leave. The outcome was a Valentine's Day spent at home, far removed from the romantic dinner we had envisioned.

This review is written not out of spite, but from a place of genuine disappointment and the hope that Soto will rectify this situation ASAP. Overbooking and undermining the trust of your patrons is unacceptable. I urge Soto to take this feedback seriously and ensure that no other customers endure the frustration and letdown we experienced on what should have been a celebratory evening.

For the person considering, do not book here for Valentine’s Day.

There is NOTHING that will tell you it is a pre-set menu except for the fine print at the bottom of an email you get after making your reservation. No one around us knew either and if you wanted to leave after finding out, you were stuck paying $75 per person. ($150 per person for the pre-set meal). My partner is not huge on raw fish (prefers cooked sushi) and was stuck eating 9 out of 10 courses raw.

On top of this, they were an hour behind for most people on their reservation.

Booked this location over South Lamar and Uchi for my birthday and I was honestly very disappointed that I spent it here. The whole experience ruined my night…waiter didn’t really bother being personable or asking if we were celebrating anything, while I hear the other waiter at the other table making sure their guest is taken care of. I got a cocktail and it had no flavors. The quality of the food was not as great as the south location. My favorite is the wagyu/toro risotto but it missed the mark here.

Every piece was tender all the way through, with perfect flavor matching. I tried the chefs choice and made my later selections based on that, and highly recommend that approach. Our server Kylie was very knowledgeable and when I asked a question she didn’t know, she found the answer right away. Very polite and very attentive to detail. Fantastic tasting experience all around.
