Great vegan sushi in a very comfortable setting - not too fancy but definitely nice. Appropriate for date night or brunch with friends.

My favorite is the California rolls, impossible gyoza, Kara age bun.

LOVED Nori — Unique Japanese restaurant serving vegetarian Sushi. Food is delicious. Service is outstanding. Various mocktails are available for those who prefer no alcohol. Sake cocktails are served too. It's expensive, so I would recommend it for special occasions only. Outdoor seating in covered patio is available for the nice weather days. Seating is timed - for party of 4, they give 2 hours. Not sure how much they enforce the time limit. Table behind us with 2 diners was seated before we were seated and were still there when we left. Space is tight inside - very close seating. Looked like they are doing well, so hopefully, they will move to a more spacious location in the future.

Nori completely changed my perspective on vegan dining. The food was fresh, flavorful, and authentically amazing—not just meat/fish substitutes. The cocktails were creative and delicious, and our server (Tree, I think?) was fantastic. Highly recommend!

Everything I had was so good. I had okonamiyaki, and chicken katsu bun. Both were so good it would be hard to pick which was best. There are lots of gluten free options, and everything is vegan. I will be back. The pictures on the menu are pretty much how the dishes look. Presentation is on point. The staff was super friendly and attentive.

I have to base the entirety of my review on the food, because that's why we came here. It was collectively decent, but the price point is a little wild. For example, we got the spicy ponzu fresh roll ("spring roll") appetizer, which was $12, and it was a single spring roll cut up into four pieces with a sauce that tasted like a mix of bottled sweet chili and ponzu sauce on the plate. The taste was fine, but $12 for that is bananas. I guess I should have asked how many rolls it came with. We got adventurous and chose the Texan roll because *when in Rome* but none of us cared for it. We ate it anyway because it was a whopping $22. The sunflower roll was good, as was the spider roll we got. I guess we collectively just made some bad decisions, but I was very underwhelmed with the food considering the total of our bill when we were finished. I've had better vegan sushi in Montana, which feels weird to say. Service was excellent.

They have really great vegan sushi and a nice selection of cocktails and mock tails. I absolutely love the food. The volcano roll and edamame with chili sauce were top tier. I think Nori has some of the best vegan food in Austin.

I originally had a great experience with the service but the second time i went it was not great. It took 30 minutes to have our drink order taken and the sushi rolls ended up coming out before our appetizers.

I will still go back but i hope the service improves.

I am not even vegan and this might be one of my favorite spots now. The food was the highlight for sure. This last experience at Nori with my husband was fantastic! I had the best Miso soup of my life. The Shitake Gyoza was good, but the apricot sauce made it next-level. We also ordered the Shitake and Texan rolls--both were amazing! We shared the Lion's Mane entree, which was good but not the best I ever had. The broccolini tasted like oil, and the potatoes were standard. We sat on the patio which had very nice ambience. We also were delighted by the mocktail selection because we don't drink alcohol. I will definitely be back to try some other rolls and maybe a ramen dish.

Fall 2024- After an unfortunate take out situation the owner reached out to me and apologized on behalf of the staff. She was very kind and considerate. We have been back for a take out order and everything ran smoothly and employees were kind. The food was delicious!

Summer 2024-EDITED: Unfortunately I had a new terrible experience! The customer service IS awful. When I was late to pick a lunch takeout order due to traffic, I showed up to be told it was thrown away. Many people still sitting eating and chatting away in the restaurant. No one called, texted or emailed asking if we were still on our way to pick up OUR food we paid for!!!!! I very much think the staff themselves ate our sushi order. I worked in the food industry and I know takeout orders left are eaten up by servers. 0 out of 5 for customer service! The food is always delicious but we will not be returning for some time now! A young male server sitting at the bar even told me “I’m not clocked in,” when I was trying to talk to him about my order. Such a shame for my review to drop due to the staff!

2022 - Date night with my hubs and this place was truly amazing! Worth the drive, worth the price, worth the waiting a few days for a reservation! We are vegan and have been missing the sushi experience and tastes of different rolls blend of savory deliciousness! This place is spot on! Vegan sushi for the win!

Wanted to post this review earlier but forgot to, so I’m doing this now because I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. My girlfriend and I went here for our 1 year anniversary and made reservations where we made it clear this was our anniversary dinner. None of the staff acknowledged it was our anniversary at all, not even a happy anniversary from the hostess. Not to mention that their website said they were almost completely booked, but there was barely a single soul in that entire restaurant the entire time we were there. Our waiter was rude and inattentive; what kind of a restaurant do you need to ask for your water to be refilled? On that note, my girlfriend ordered a non-alcoholic cocktail when our waiter first came. She waited 20 minutes, but saw the drink sitting at the bar for 15 minutes right next to our waiter who was talking with the bartender the entire time; let me remind you this restaurant was completely empty. Our food and the drink was mediocre, which is fine if it wasn’t for the fact that there wasn’t a thing under 12 dollars. For the price we were paying, we would’ve expected a phenomenal culinary experience. The impossible chicken karaage was gummy, the roll with the egg had no flavor, and the yuzu drink was strangely bitter. The best thing we had was the nigiri, even then it wasn’t amazing. Our bill came to 80 dollars, which is far too much for the experience we had. Personally, I think it was worth 30 dollars at most. Don’t expect anything special here.

I was so excited to find a vegan sushi restaurant in Austin. Nori has a plethora of options to satisfy everyone’s taste buds. We started with Chick’n Kaarage and it was my very good and full of flavor. The volcano sushi was good, but not my favorite. The Katsu Curry Dish was a bit too thick for me, but my husband loved it and he’s not a vegan. The Lion Mane Steak was a good and hearty dish; however, I didn’t care too much for the mashed potatoes, but the lion’s mane steak was my favorite! The steak was juicy, bursting with flavor and the texture was perfect! We had dinner here on a busy night, so I understand that there’s a possibility that things will not run smoothly, but the service here has room for improvement.

I have been to Nori a bunch of times and it never disappoints. I have mainly had the gyozas and makis here. The food is delicious even for non-vegans and meat eaters. It is really commendable how they make plant-based Japanese food taste so nice.

The staff is always welcoming and friendly.

It’s always better to reserve your spot in advance due to limited seating and high popularity.

My wife and I visited our son and daughter in law (who is vegetarian) at their home in Austin. Based on their positive experiences dining at Nori, the four of us decided to visit together.

After starting with a very tasty Shitake Gyoza, we ordered, from the Maki part of the (depicted) menu the Volcano, Sunflower, Spider, Rainbow and Dragon. The fullness of flavor and the beauty of presentation of these dishes were wonderful. We truly enjoyed these dishes

We then decided we wanted more. We ordered the Creamy Crunchy and the Texan. Frankly, the listed ingredients of the Texan leaned us against ordering it, but my son convinced us.

The Texan is comprised of smoked Tofu, Avocado and Jalapeño, topped with smoked tempeh, tempura flakes, served with blueberry barbecue, spicy Mayo and Roasted garlic.

What a surprise!! The smokiness of the tofu and sweetness of the blueberry barbecue sauce played off of each other quite well. We still wonder how, but are thankful that, the chef came up with the combination of ingredients that make up the Texan.

The service was wonderful, thanks to our server Anastasio, who we hope to see again when we return. He was responsive but never intrusive and we appreciate his assistance when needed.

The atmosphere is stylish, but not overly so, clean and not noisy at all.

I am a meat lover and proud of it, and Austin has fantastic barbecue, but Nori should not be missed by anyone who likes quality sushi. I highly recommend it and can't wait to eat there again.
-------------------
UPDATE:
Brought more family to Nori's, this time for lunch. Our server Ruba was absolutely excellent and, hopefully, will be assigned to our table for our next visit.

The Bao Buns, Karaage and Okonomiyaki were a great start for us. The Origami was great, as were the Brooklyn, the Tempeh Temple and the Buddha.

Nori has achieved "go to Sushi restaurant" status with us when we visit Austin. I strongly recommend that you give it a try.

After hearing so much about Nori I finally got the chance to try it out. I've been twice recently and have tried several items. All of the food is very flavorful and comes with a brilliant presentation. The sushi items are phenomenonal. I'm still a little on the fence about the mushroom root chickn sometimes it can be a little too tender and soft. I might prefer the meatier bite of seitan or a super firm tofu. The drinks are kind of so so, if you want a stiff drink this won't be it. Also didn't care for the cheesecake it has a strange very artificial texture. It has a slippery slimyness in your mouth that is off putting. It does not melt in your mouth like cheesecake should. The one I had at Rebel Cheese was ten times better.

Really good food and so thankful to have a vegan sushi place in town. Everything tasted great- we had the Texan maki roll, the creamy crunchy and the volcano, katsu Curry and some appetizers and drinks and they were all so good and filling! Their mango ice cream was really yummy as well. House sake was okayish not great. Food came out fast and was presented well. My only complaint is that our server was kind of pushy and was asking us repetitively if we needed anything else and kind of felt like she was trying to get us to leave - although we were celebrating a birthday and we were a large group so obviously we were spending our time and money at nori not just to quickly eat and leave in 45 mins, we wanted to spend time with each other and catch up which is the point of dining outside in a group- apart from weird service, it was a great experience.

Visited Nori with colleagues during a business trip to Austin, and it was a memorable experience. The ambiance is modern and inviting, perfect for both business dinners and casual outings. We were impressed by the freshness of the sushi, and the creative rolls were a delight, offering unique flavors that went beyond the usual. The presentation of each dish was impeccable.

Texan roll was my favorite, featuring smoked tofu and avocado, topped with smoked tempeh and tempura flakes. The roll was served with an incredible blend of blueberry BBQ sauce, spicy mayo, roasted garlic, and pickled wasabi—truly a unique and flavorful experience. The ramen, with its rich, flavorful broth, was another highlight. We couldn’t resist trying all the desserts on the menu, and each one was amazing, with a perfect balance of flavors and textures.

I had previously made a bad review but took it down because I had only gone once and didn’t think it was fair but I’ve gone three times now so here it is.
I’m allergic to strawberries and carry an epipen.

Incident 1#
I order their raspberry cake that says raspberry on menu they bring it out (after 45 minute wait) with strawberry, I ask why their is strawberry and they say it’s strawberry cake and i ask why it says raspberry on menu they say we never updated it. I learned my lesson for the next time I came.
Incident 2#
We go to get brunch they have waffles with fresh fruit. I decide not to risk it and tell waitress no strawberries at all please none. She goes to back and laughs with other workers which I thought was weird but then brings plate with strawberry purée on side. By fresh fruit they meant only strawberries.
Incident 3#
We get salads I tell waitress this time I’m allergic to strawberries can you make sure theirs none in the dressing?? She tells me oh we can’t figure out what’s in it the chefs don’t understand us and theirs no recipe card.

I kept going back hoping it would turn good since people constantly rave about this place and maybe I just kept getting duds but it’s just been bad experiences, and bad food. I really wanted to support vegan places since I’m vegan but their food is not to die for.

Our dining experience at Nori in Austin, Texas, was nothing short of spectacular. As vegetarians, we often hesitate to choose sushi restaurants due to their typically limited vegetarian options. However, celebrating a birthday at Nori was a revelation. The restaurant's full vegan menu offered an astounding variety of rolls that went far beyond the usual avocado roll we are accustomed to.

From the moment we walked in, the waiting staff made the evening exceptional. They were incredibly attentive and helpful as we navigated the vibrant menu, ensuring we understood the ingredients and could make the best choices. Their enthusiasm and knowledge of the vegan options were contagious, setting a joyful tone for the celebration.

The menu at Nori is a treasure trove of creative and delectable vegan sushi rolls. Each roll was a delightful surprise, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. We savored innovative combinations like the Volcano, with its perfect balance of sweetness and heat, and the Sunflower, which offered a delightful crunch. The freshness of the ingredients and the artistry in each roll were truly impressive.

Celebrating a birthday at Nori was a unique and memorable experience. The variety and creativity of the vegan sushi rolls allowed us to explore new flavors and enjoy a truly gourmet meal. I highly recommend Nori to any vegetarian or vegan sushi lover looking for a dining experience that is both satisfying and exciting. This restaurant has redefined what vegan sushi can be, and we can't wait to return for more culinary adventures.

Pros: insane ambience, friendly staff and great service. Being vegetarian, it's awesome to have an entire Japanese menu (vegan restaurant) that you can eat anything off of :) Also, in the endeavour to be a vegan eatery, they have not strayed from authenticity of menu items, which is kudos-worthy.

Cons: expensive (money > value). It's objectively good food (Chkn kaarage, nigiri sampler, mushroom ramen, roasted rice green tea), but we've eaten better ramen and kaarage chkn for a cheaper list price.

Fantastic birthday dinner spot. Had a great time, the ambience was beautiful and calm. Onto the food, the brussel sprouts were perfectly cooked outshining the chicken karaage. We tried the texan roll which was pretty good with a unique blueberry bbq flavor, as well as the volcano roll which was excellent with its crisp. Finally, we closed off with the dragon roll which was very mild and a pleasant way to end the main courses. It was fresh and the eggplant worked well with the other vegetables and elements of the roll. As an addendum, the vanilla ice cream is one of the best ice creams I have ever had it is insanely good can not suggest it enough.

Even if you are not vegan, this is an outstanding take on Japanese Nigiri and Maki. The two of us, one vegan, one omnivore, sampled several dishes and could not be anything but amazed at the result. In taste and presentation it was difficult to fault these takes on Japanese classics. Service was very good, attentive without being overbearing. Seating was a little tight but not troublesome. Noise levels were tolerable. On site parking was a plus. Decor was simple and pleasing and lighting was good. Overall this was a very fine restaurant and it deserves 4.5 clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale ( 5 Stars on the Google scale ).

Such an awesome experience! The nigiri sample, sushi roll, bao buns, lion’s mane plate, and cheesecake we shared were all so delicious! Had the coconut by the sea drink and really enjoyed it. Tried the wasabi stinger drink out of curiosity and wasn’t a fan but when the waitress noticed I wasn’t drinking it she offered to get a different drink or take it off the bill. Worth every penny. Such a treat as a vegan. My non-vegan friend loved it too.

Oh my Nori! This place is amazing. I've never been to a Japanese vegan/vegetarian restaurant and I'm in awe of all the options they have. My husband and I had the crunchy creamy roll and the spicy creamy Ramen. I wish we had more space to be able to order another roll- but we were just so full from munching at another place earlier. 5 tables had been reserved for a party that never showed the whole time we were there, so that was a little annoying because the restaurant was super full already. Our waitress, Tressa was as sweet as pie. Great service from all and eclectic, fun ambiance also. Hands down, one of the best spots I've eaten at in Austin! Will definitely visit again ❤️ Maybe with a reservation this time for more comfortable seating 😉

A vegan sushi place!? My dream has come true. But wait, there's more! There are so many fun things on this menu. We came for happy hour and were really impressed with everything that we tried. First of all, HH is 5:00-6:30PM Tuesday - Friday or Monday 5:00-10:00PM. Actually I'm confused because I thought it was HH also on Sunday (which is when we went) but their website doesn't say that anymore... maybe call to check. Anyway, here's what we tried:

Chicken bao and tofu bao: they were both delicious. The tofu one tasted like a sweet banh mi and it was amazing. The chicken tasted like fried chicken with a slaw that was equally awesome.
Apparently the baos are only available during happy hour.

volcano roll - amaaaazing and warm. This reminded me of the Longhorn roll from Kyoto (RIP) in case any of y'all remember that amazing restaurant off Congress that will live forever in my heart.
The spicy margarita was strong but not too strong and had a great flavor.

We will be back!

EDUCATE YOUR STAFF AND KITCHEN ON ALLERGIES.
My boyfriend and I went there on 06/16 with a reservation for 8pm. It was communicated profusely I had a sesame seed allergy, as well as explained that not only seeds are dangerous but especially sesame oil which you cannot obviously see.

My sesame allergy is not a joke and we were told “we don’t think we have sesame oil”. “I don’t think” doesn’t cut it. We insisted our server checks with the kitchen etc. She assured it was checked. At this point I am unsure whose fault it was. If I was given 2-3 sesame seeds on accident, it would have been fine. But quite apparently something was doused in sesame oil.
We live far down south and upon leaving the restaurant I started feeling an allergy coming. Although I took some medicine straight away I ended up having a violent allergic reaction to something I ate at Nori, to the point of my boyfriend speeding and running red lights to get me to an ER because I was getting huge hives, I was going in and out of consciousness and my breathing was affected.
I ended up throwing up before we could get to the ER resulting in bettering the situation. If I had gone to the ER and been charged thousands of dollars I would have sued you.
Again, EDUCATE your restaurant on allergies. I quite nearly died and was beyond scared.

Ultimately I don’t think my allergy was taken seriously. If I was alone it quite likely could have resulted in a tragedy.

Exceptional food and service! Got seated on a Tuesday for lunch with zero issues. Lunch and dinner menu are similar but lunch specials are great deals. Got the sushi platter which comes with soup and salad for $15. Tofu karage is great but wish it wasn’t a mayo based dipping sauce (sweet). Overall I’d come back for spicy vegan ramen and curry katsu for dinner.

Update: lunch 🍜 ramen isn’t as flavorful as I had hoped. The noodles are all stuck together when they arrived too. The oyster mushroom is large and difficult to chew without looking like a hippo. Overall, it has much room for improvement.. compared to jinya’s spicy creamy vegan ramen

Oyakadon is extremely filling and yummy. Half portion might be more do-able for lunch, but for $18 I can see why it’s as large as it is.

Best vegan sushi I ever had! I love coming here for special occasions. The service is fantastic and all the rolls and drinks were great. The most surprising was the California roll. I’m usually not a fan of the krab one when I wasn’t vegetarian and this one had so much flavor. My husband who not vegetarian agreed that the California was a lot better then the traditional one and preferred it. Our favorite was the shiitake roll!

We went there expecting the place to be formal - it's actually quite casual. The appetizers and drinks arrived quickly and were quite good. The Maki were good although some of us didn't relish the BBQ sauce in the Texan. The kinoko ramen was bland and disappointing and we had to request extra spices. The lava cake wasn't that good . Service was fair but they didn't have a couple of options on the menu at peak dinner time on a Friday which I wasn't too happy about. The bill wasn't cheap, either - over $200 for 3.

Dined here the other night and had a very nice experience. I recently moved back home to Austin from Chicago and have been a little underwhelmed at the amount of exclusively vegan restaurants here. However, the food and service both really knocked it out of the park at Nori. Tressa was our waitress and made the first-time experience so easy and enjoyable. Not overly expensive, but even it is was, the service and food quality would make it much worth it. Parking is also super easy.

Sushi Experience №166

Came in to celebrate my partner’s birthday and was disappointed with the overall experience. I read reviews saying the service was excellent, but our server only came to check on us and refill our waters once, our table was by the kitchen so every time the door opened there was a very bright light, and lastly to note here: there was a cockroach on the floor that was pointed out to our server (by his foot/ under our table) that was not addressed/ apologized for. Don’t worry though, the roach was chased around the restaurant with a cup so *maybe* it was caught.

The food was good, but it was frustrating not having anything to drink.

I feel for the price, the experience was poor and extremely underwhelming. We also had to wait 10-15 minutes for the check AFTER prebussing the table with the plates and my card on the edge of the table.

I would not have brought someone here for their birthday if I knew that’s what we were getting into.

It is a fun place to try out! Service was great. Dessert was yum and really enjoyed the sunflower roll. It would be nice if vegan / veggie restaurants started serving actual vegan items instead of imitating meat dishes. My mom doesn't eat meat and has no desire to taste it, so the imitation meat gets old real fast. Atmosphere could be better for the price. Also vegan food prices being the same as meat is so interesting... but quality / presentation is good so overall pretty good experience:)

I have always been curious of this place Nori. Plant-based anything makes me worry (only because I had vegan ice cream at a store once with my family and we all got sick!). So, I had a muted sense of excitement to try this place out.

I'm so glad I did. The food is pretty good. You don't forget that you're eating plant-based food; however, the flavor profiles are extremely close and complex. The brussel sprouts were really good - how they got such good flavor in the sauce, no one will know. It tasted like fish sauce! The ceviche was pretty interesting in a good way. I kept getting random crunches and surprisingly enough, they were corn nuts! Definitely clever. The sauce was good on the ceviche too. The shiitake gyoza were excellent. I had to scrape up the sauce which looked like orange marmalade but was really light and balanced well with the gyoza. My LEAST favorite dish was the shiitake maki. Way too onion-y. It was overpowering and overwhelmed my palate. My 2nd least favorite dish was the Lion's King Steak. I appreciate the effort to get the flavor and look of actual steak but the texture of the mushroom definitely failed. It was quite stringy. The mashed potatoes on the bottom were great though.

The service got better as the night went along. We sat in the corner of the bar and didn't get water or a server for probably 10 minutes. Once our waitress came by, things started flowing pretty smoothly.

The atmosphere is "eh". I wish it was a larger space or had more standard-seating tables. We came in at a relatively early dinner time but there were no standard tables on the reservation platform we used. We had to sit at a high-top. It was also rainy so no one could use the outdoor seating. I bet it would be nice on a pretty day.

I order nori a few times a week via Uber eats. My only complaint is there is barely any wasabi provided. If I want an average serving of wasabi with my order I have to call and request. My recommendation is that nori A) begins serving a normal side of wasabi with each dish B) they allow for extra wasabi to be added through Uber eats, or allow notes for each dish so I can request additional wasabi through a note.
