One of the best dinners I’ve had! It was delightful and the staff was really nice and friendly. The whole experience is about 2 hours long and the chefs were amazing and really open to share details about the food and other fun facts. Every bite literally melts in your mouth. I definitely had a great first omakase experience 🙌🏽

Not only did they rush my group for the food they also rushed us for drinking the pairing. I’ve been to a few omakase experiences and this was the worse I’ve been to. Do not recommend. Definitely not worth the money. The absolute worst compared to the food. Speaking from someone who has enjoyed multiple Michelin and Omakase experiences. On top of it all they didn’t offer any refund for a $400 disappointment. Recommend going to any other restaurant on the east side. This one is total garbage and you won’t regret not going there

Extremely unique and intimate omakase experience. They ask you to arrive at least 15 minutes early to start you off with a welcome cocktail in a cozy waiting room. This experience was reserved for a birthday dinner, and we were seated with a signed card full of well-wishes, which was very thoughtful!
The presentation, atmosphere, and quality of the meal was outstanding. The chefs were knowledgeable and so engaging with the diners. Explaining each sushi piece and its ingredients origin and cultural importance.
We’ll definitely be coming back for an omakase experience here:)

We had a great experience at the restaurant. Great sushi, great service. Unfortunately the way the restaurant handled a minor double charge was incredibly insulting. From not handling the charge before a gift card was delivered, to ignoring texts to follow up on the charge, it was shocking to see such an amazing restaurant miss something that would've been so easy to resolve.

Good service but not a fan of the "hip" sushi concept, playing dress up with nigiri and adding too many layers of flavor. It's like me at a Froyo shop trying hold a squirt of everything in the small bowl. Sushi rice is a limited medium, between the pieces for it to hold the XO sauce, Kewpie mayo, Everything but bagel seasoning, truffle oil, cheddar cheese as well as the fish is really stressing it out. The pieces were incoherent and confusing at times. Just let the quality of the raw ingredients shine. Had to request a plain chutoro at the end to cleanse palette which was plain and nice

Best omakase in Austin!
Chef Adam is very kind and nice with the dishes. Also friendly with taking to everyone and making sure we stay engaged to each course. All dishes are fresh with real wasabi (the plant!) Their drink menu is also full of different styles of sake. The caviar was super. And they follow most dietary rules we had.
Worth the price even with their 22% service fee. You’ll be so full so don’t worries about not having enough to fill your stomach. (Unlike our previous experience at Uchiko

This is the third time I come to Sushi Bar since they’re opened. The sushi is very high quality as to be expected. However, this is my first time dining with this particular sushi chef. I have to say that the main chef this time almost ruined my experience. Watching him plate our sushi was a little disappointing, he lacked precision and things were a little sloppy. One assistant said he has worked in the sushi industry for a few years but he seemed to rush through plating as well. The last time I dined with Sushi Bar the staff was incredibly knowledgeable, poise and seemed to take pride in every piece they presented to us. As far as experience, this time around was subpar.

We enjoyed our experience very much. Loved the service. Some suggestions would be,

1. It’s totally okay to start the course within 5 minutes of seating us in the room. We reach there 15-20 minutes before. And then we are again waiting. We would like to have that extra 5 minutes at the end of the course rather than being rushed out.

2. It should be mentioned that there is a default 22 percent gratuity while reserving. It did not affect our life because we declined the additional tip options. Not everyone would be okay with that especially when they are making that choice while others watch.

3. There were 2 staff to take care of the check out at the end. But, to make people feel special even when they leave the place, it is better to do it while they are in the room itself. Like the good old restaurant way. That extra 5 minutes at the end would help with that procedure.

It’s like you somehow take out the happiness of the entire 2 hrs of experience in the last 5 minutes. Again, I loved the food. I loved how the chefs and waiters took care of us. Thank you for that.

We had an excellent omakase experience, and we recommend it. We went for a birthday celebration, and this was our first omakase; I don't have a lot of omakase experience, but we do eat a lot of sushi and sashimi.
The experience was well-crafted. The restaurant is in a converted home on E Cesar Chavez. You enter on the side; the atmosphere is dark and classy. Customers should dress up but fashionably (and comfortably; it's Austin). Before arriving, I received a text asking for names of the diners in my party and that we would receive a welcome cocktail upon arrival. I replied that we would prefer mocktails because we don't drink much; when we arrived we received cocktails, so there was a disconnect somewhere. But they were otherwise very attentive to requests. After about fifteen minutes to enjoy cocktails in the waiting room, we were led in to the omakase bar. We each had a place set with our names. The setting was simple: a small plate for the sushi, a salad as a palate cleanser, and a hot towel provided on arrival. No chopsticks; they referred to the bites as finger food. The sushi chefs were each friendly and conversive. (If you prefer enjoying your sushi in quiet, this is probably not the course for you.) We prefer to focus on our sushi when we eat, which the chef in front of us quickly recognized and waited to converse until we were done with each bite.
As for the food, the fish is all excellent—some of the best in Austin. Particular highlights were the tartare and uni. (I love uni.) They worked hard to craft a particular menu, with toppings for each sushi that were interesting and tasty. We prefer much less on our fish because we like to really taste and focus on its quality and subtle flavors, so we often took much of the topping off. But the toppings were by no means bad; each were delicious, and they were perfect for most people. The dessert was also very good—an ice cream dish that was sweet, slightly savory, and not too heavy.
Overall, we enjoyed our experience and felt it was worth the money.

This was my first omakase experience, I must say it was a wonderful time. This speakeasy style of fine dining is genuine as well as elegant. I love hidden gems and this is definitely one of them, if you blink you’ll miss this nested restaurant. Booking this experience was easy for me, although, per their website, it’s stated that they book on the first of every month for that particular month. Parking is a hassle as their on site parking lot is only about 3-4 spaces. If you are dining early you may be able to catch a street parking spot near by, So plan accordingly. The chefs are super knowledgeable about what they are serving. Each bite had a breakdown of ingredients as well as the nature of fresh fish or beef selection. This 17 course meal is hearty in size and before you know it you’ll be rubbing your belly. Price is fair for the experience, beware that gratuity is included and any additional tip goes towards the chefs performance and hospitality. I would most definitely plan on going back and enjoying this space once again. Cheers.

Wow. If there were a way to give 6+ stars I would. This night was absolutely incredible. It definitely wasn’t cheap, but nothing about the experience was short of spectacular. The chefs, food, and sake were top of the line and my wife and I couldn’t stop talking about the experience. It was everything and more from what we were expecting. It was the absolute best experience we’re had dining out with one another. If there was a way to rate this outing higher we would. Absolutely top notch, A-class experience! If you’re looking for a dinner unlike any other, you would behoove yourself giving this a go! We had such an incredible time and hope to do it again soon! Took my bf here for his bday dinner. Parking was not great, so plan to park a few blocks out and walk. When we came in, it was really dark inside, and the front seemed very unorganized, and everyone kept sporadically asking questions repeatedly. The chefs we had were great, very entertaining, and kept the conversation going. It does get really hot in the rooms, so be prepared for that. They do accommodate most allergies with advanced notice.
The only thing I didn't like was the 22% gratuity onto your check at the end and then wanting you to tip additionally specifically for the chefs, so honestly, just give them cash. The drink packages are an additional $100 and up, or you can order drinks per glass or just your own bottle of sake, wine, etc. Overall, expect to pay up to $500 or more for two people, 17 courses, and dessert with a welcome drink. We were definitely full. We had the last round of tasting of the night, so it was nice to just speak to the chefs and the bartender after everyone left. They really did a great job and are overall entertaining people.

Delightful experience. A bit priceir than my normal sushi experiences, but by far the best sushi I have ever had. Extremely knowledgeable and friendly chefs, and while not every course was my personal favorite, even the items I didn't lean towards were received very highly by my friends. I would definitely recommend this as a celebration or date night spot, but be prepared to spend some money. This is an EXPERIENCE and your tastebuds will WEEP. A spot you cannot pass up. Money is well worth the night you will have here.

Two things to start off with:
1) Pay the extra for the add-ons and the booze accompaniments if you can stomach it. I am a tiny woman so I did not add in the alcohol but added a wine for my meal and added one "add-on" to a dish. If you are paying a large amount of money for food - might as well go all the way. It's times like these I curse myself for having a small stomach.
2) Book in advance and when you book our chefs said if you book the LAST seating they are sometimes able to give extra bites for an additional cost (again - if you have a big appetite this is a no brainer!)

Let's start off with the location. Our Uber dropped us off and the driver along with myself and my husband had no idea where to go LOL. Who would've thought it'd be in a home! Super cute and once inside it is a really cool dining experience. You approach the hostess who asks if you'd like to add-on to your sushi pieces - we added black truffle to one and then presented us with a complimentary cocktail a grapefruit and rosemary spritz which was actually delicious which was surprising to me as I am not a grapefruit girl! She then had us wait in the lounge area for the rest of our dining group!

Once inside the room I would compare it to a Michelin dining experience as you are treated with the utmost respect, the restaurant is spotless and these sushi chefs know what they are doing. The care put into their work is mesmerizing. It is actually BETTER than Michelin dining because it's laid back and full of laughs and conversation. It was a two hour meal of fun! We got to know the chefs and the other diners. The time flew by!

This meal was 17 courses and we found that there were only 2 we weren't HUGE on. Majority of the bites were a 90% wow and there were I think 5 that were 100% popping eyes out of sockets WOWZA's. The fish are shipped in from parts of Japan, Indonesia and New Zealand to name a few. Everything was so fresh and vivid. I just find omakase to be an out of body experience. The different textures, flavours and the knowledge these chefs have to plate items together to perfect flavour combinations is mind blowing.

I won't describe EVERY bite because this review is already quite lengthy - HOWEVER; I would love to write about the showstoppers. The Shima Aji (striped jack), the Chu toro (medium fatty tuna), the Japanese Mackerel, the OTORO (Fatty tuna), the A5 wagyu and the unagi which was the last bite with bone marrow and I am sorry - it was one of the best things I had ever tasted. Our chef said it is kind of a cheat code because it's fat on fat but oh my days was it ever HEAVEN ON EARTH. Not only were these bites OUT OF THIS WORLD but this wasn't the end - there was a green tea with ginger sauce and it was the best tea I had ever had. Even more promising was the fact my husband, who HATES tea (weirdo, I know) said the tea was outstanding. Please tell us how to make this tea or where to buy it! It is life changing! It was a great palate cleanser and great digestive aid after all of those bites. Lastly, we were surprised with a dessert. I have never gotten a dessert in my two other omakase experiences and it was honestly just unlike any dessert I had ever taken. This was a Michelin dessert through and through. It was a black sesame seed ice cream with meringue and a lemon curd and it had some seeds or something. I don't even know. I think I went deaf when they were explaining the items to me because I just was in my own Lala land of mouth pleasure!

The only bites we didn't care for were the everything bagel bite - this felt too Americanized for us and totally overtook the fish flavour at the end. We also felt the sea bream was a bit bland. But 2 dishes out of 17 with a dessert and phenomenal tea are not going to stop us from coming back again! Please treat yourself. It is something every sushi fan MUST try.

Having tried sushi from Japan, several Bay Area spots and Vegas, this place was a bit of a letdown when it came to the omakase experience.

The staff were super friendly and welcoming, and they scored top points on that. As for the food, it was great, it felt more like a fusion twist, possibly more catered to the American palate than to someone looking for authentic Japanese flavors.

My main issue was with this omakase: I was encouraged to have extra pieces, which I presumed were part of the deal, as has been my experience in Japan and elsewhere. But when the bill came, there were additional charges for these. It felt sneaky and detracted from the overall experience. I was ok paying $250 for the experience ($150 + drinks) overall but I got charged an extra $100 for 4 pieces of sushi, not including taxes or tip, I wasn't clearly informed this would be the case here. I considered bringing my wife here, but with this pricing setup, I definitely wont.

So while the service and food are good, beware if you're choosing this omakase – it might end up costing more than you think. If you're after genuine omakase, like I've had in Japan and other Bay Area places, you might want to look elsewhere.

And ... not a big deal but they spelled my name wrong,. In Russian ... it was an offensive word.

The place is very nondescript so you might pass it up. It’s a little white house on the corner. I echo other reviewers with regard to the experience seeming somewhat contrived. Immediately upon entering you are escorted to a very, might I add “very” dark room where we wait with the others for our seating time. They were 10 minutes late seating us which doesn’t seem like a big deal but I’m not impressed with the fact that they request we come 20 minutes early. If you’re going to request us to come that early, I feel we should be seated promptly. The decor/ambiance was sub par. It looked a little tacky.
The sushi was delicious. I get that some reviewers mentioned it was overly “dressed” (too much stuff on the fish). But, I liked it. I’m not a purest when it comes to omakase just as long as it tastes good, and it did.
Our sushi chef was very knowledgeable. Disappointed that they don’t have a full bar so if you’re looking for cocktails instead of sake or beer, you’re out of luck.
The dessert was fabulous. Loved it.
Biggest disappointment was at the end when you pay, the machine makes you select a tip percentage. Remember, we’ve already paid 22% gratuity that’s taxed. So, in front of my guest, I had to select “no tip” which gave the appearance I was stiffing them. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’ll continue my pursuit for an Omakase place in Austin that’s actually worth the huge bill.

My wife and I are sushi lovers and have long wanted to try Sushi Bar ATX. We booked a 7pm Friday reservation three weeks in advance for her birthday.

Unfortunately, when our reservation date arrived, the restaurant called at 4:15pm to tell us they'd canceled our reservation. They claimed there was an issue with the integration between the third-party reservation system we used and their own system. Curiously, though, they falsely claimed we made the reservation the day before.

The restaurant's cancellation of our reservation was deeply disappointing, particularly since it happened at the last minute when we booked three weeks in advance. The restaurant's attempt to deflect blame for cancelling less than three hours before our reservation time by claiming we made the reservation one day before was unprofessional.

Think twice before booking this restaurant for a special occasion. They may not honor their reservation.

At $300/person, it ain’t worth the experience. More expensive than in Japan, where it is more serene and there are no added spices or ingredients onto “thicker” slices or freshly procured seafood. Here 25% gratuity - ugh! Fish are sliced so thin and you cannot taste the fish other than the added toppings. At $10+/nigiri, you would expect a lot more finesse, period!

Feels like a commercialized soulless experience. The sushi is good ( though not $250 person good), the chefs are nice enough, the service overall is good. One of the best Omakase restaurants in the south Austin area. Two dinning areas and 4 sittings per night. 16 savory + 1 sweet courses. Welcoming cocktail upon arrival is a very nice touch. First course arrived rather quickly without much fanfare. The two assigned chefs were whipping out each course in a timely fashion. One could say it's bit rush. The bar person was busy helping with sake/wine selection and selfie duties. All in all, all sushis were delicately prepared and the origin of the fish were explained. The surprises of the day were the King Salmon and Uni from New Zealand. I am not an Uni fan but it was exceptionally good! The torched fresh Unagi was the last item served and it's one of the best I have ever tasted. The temperature was perfect and the texture gave it an extra dimension. Would I visit again? probably not. I was looking for more creativity from the chef instead of a fixed menu for all. The cadence of the service was also a bit too quick for me.

The ambience is traditional Japanese, very clean and comfortable. It’s a small sushi bar with two dedicated chefs, very personal.
The food was mostly nigiris but with their own twist. You would not be disappointed.

The chefs and staff were so accommodating and intimate on our reservation. We literally can’t wait to book our next visit with friends and family!

Dear Reader,

I embarked on a culinary journey fit for royalty. The Omakase dining experience unfolded before me, a symphony of flavors and textures woven into an intricate tapestry of gastronomic delight. My senses were ensnared, and I surrendered to the whims of three sushi maestros. True culinary sorcerers!

Each dish, a revelation. Delicate morsels of sushi, so fresh they seemed plucked from a hidden treasure, graced my palate. The subtle dance of flavors, from the sweetness of uni to the complexity of toro, left me longing for more.

In this intimate Omakase dining experience, I discovered a realm of culinary excellence
a feast for the senses that will linger in my memory forever. Highly recommend it!

Such a unique experience! We celebrated my birthday here and from the host experience and pre-dinner drink, to the end, everything was cultivated and executed so perfectly. Our side of the room had Chef Mikey and he was great! Wonderful conversation and knowledge shared. Each piece was so delightful and bursting with flavor! 10/10 would come back and recommend this restaurant. Thank you to all!

What a fantastic and incredible experience. This is an absolute must try for anyone. Even someone who hasn’t been a very adventurous eater. Things you never thought you’d try are all the best of the best. This is how you try something new. I love sushi, sashimi and nigiri. This 17 course nigiri tasting takes you through the most melt in your mouth experience you will ever try. The chefs tell you everything you are eating and very super enthusiastic and engaging. The price is expensive but it is worth every penny. Probably not something you do on weekly basis but a special occasion or surprise night with someone special. Reservations needed and plan ahead because you won’t know you got in immediately.
You go in a group of 10 and it’s a very intimate setting. There are 3 chefs and a sommelier. You have drink pairing options from $85 and up. We chose to split the middle option of wine for $185. Every pairing has a story and each course the chef details the ingredients and why they work well together. This team was super passionate and you can taste it. I highly recommend you try this when you’re in Austin!

Had the best time at sushi bar! Every bite was mind blowing and gets better with each new piece!! Service was attentive but the only thing that diminished my experience was the hand towel they provide you to clean your hands between each bite did not smell clean. There was a strong musty smell coming from it and every time I used it, it left the same gross musty smell on my hands. Considering the fact they don’t give you any other utensils, I had no choice but to keep using the smelly towel :( was kind of a bummer but the sushi was still delicious!

Second time, first time was during covid under different management ;complete with plexiglass dividers.

It is the most non traditional omakase I’ve been to but that’s the whole point. Quality is good, fish/toppings are flavorful, pretty unique twists. It is expensive , but the staff to seating ratio is pretty high.

Would revisit for a special occasion with friends. It is an intimate setting, pretty fun to relax and chit chat with the chefs. Drink selection is fun as well. May try the pairing next time

Great experience and food! The food quality is definitely top notch and they don’t cut corners. The chefs are fun and very knowledgeable. The smoked mackerel was my favorite!
A little pricey but well worth it. The customer service is excellent and they try and get to know you. I would definitely visit again! We purchased two bottles of sake but next time I would do the sake pairings.

TL’DR: average. You get better value for your Buck at Uchi or Sushi by scratch if you want the small/chef table intimate experience. For reference we tried Uchi, Uchiko, Sushi by scratch, Soto, Uroko, and Otoko.

Starting with their pricing, since there are a lot of reviews that criticize this.

When we first arrived, the hostess showed us a menu listing caviar ($26 pp), Truffles ($20 pp), and foie gras ($13 pp) additions, you could choose any combination of the above and the prices were listed for each item. We agreed to all, read below for specific reviews of those additions.

At checkout the bill was higher than what I calculated due to taxes. Here comes my BIGGEST issue with them, it is the first time in my life where I see the tip or as they called it “Service Charge” listed as a line item that is added to the subtotal, then tax was calculated including tax on the “service charge”. I heard of tipping over tax but taxing tip was the first for me!! I asked for an itemized receipt and I got one.

The cocktails were just OK, we ordered Watermelon frasco and Sake old fashioned.

Let’s talk food, it was 50/50, few bites were amazing, most bites were too mild, and a couple were bad:

Tartare: excellent, loved the texture and flavors
Hotate w truffles: fishy and lacked flavor, the truffles were good but since the fish wasn’t any good, it seemed the truffles were a waste
Shima Aji: has a spicy kick, the fish is mild though
Chu toro: amazing
Madai: lacked flavor
Akami: very good
Kinmedai: the topping was really good, the fish was too mild
Ora king: amazing!! A bit sweet but delicious
Sawara: good but mild
Managa Tsuo: meh, the combo with the torched fish wasn’t good
Botanebi: very very good
Kanpachi: excellent!!
Otoro w foie gras: it was foie gras paste not an actual piece. It was fat on fat, it was very good overall
A5 wagyu with caviar: it was really good, I don’t think the caviar added much flavor though but the beef was amazing
Uni: it was ok. My husband’s piece though was fishy
Unagi: excellent
Dessert: very good

They offered additional three pieces at the end for $10-$14 a piece, we didn’t partake.

Sushi Experience №115

TLDR: Overhyped.

Atmosphere: If you’re looking for an authentic, classy, and elegant Japanese omakase experience this is not the place for you. If you want to drop $200/person on a very casual loud atmosphere where you just want to hang out with others then this is it. It just felt very touristy and overhyped. The guests who were seated with us had not had very many omakase experiences prior to this one. At the end, they have you line up and checkout at the entrance which felt very cheap.

The food: Average compared to other omakase experiences we’ve had in Austin and Japan. Especially if you compare at the price point, this is extremely overpriced for what you are getting. There were a few pieces that were very good, but most were just not that great. There were only 3 courses out of 16 that we really really liked. Rice wasn’t good and the fish did not taste as fresh as other places we have tried. The dessert (kakigori) was delicious though.

From when we arrived, the staff were very hospitable and personable. I love that we had a welcome drink and sat in the dark cozy room until we sat down for dinner. The dinner was delicious, every single piece (and there were 17 of them!) The dinner lasted about an hour and a half. I can not recommend them enough. This meal was one of the best days of my life, right after getting married. It was unlike any experience I’ve had. As a sushi lover, this experience was worth every penny. I loved each of our chefs, they were amazing to chat with and were thoughtful in their conversations.
The food was absolutely phenomenal, I wish I could eat each bite 10000 times more. The menu was diverse and we got to try fish we have never had.
The best part was the each chefs special curated piece at the end. They put so much love and care into their dishes and it truly shows.
I can’t pick a favorite, because they were all so so good. What truly makes this experience special is the chefs themselves. They were some of the most interesting and special people I’ve had the pleasure to dine with. We will 100% return on our next trip to Austin!

Not just another Omakase Sushi experience here at the secret door behind Bento Picnik. This place is special and expensive. You arrive and have to find the secret door/entrance...this is a thing. I happened upon a late seating for 9:45...it was still a full seating. They courses are in the wall and they produce to put on a show. My love and I enjoyed the wine paring along with the added truffles and caviar topper. The Chefs are great, they explain all the fish and courses while they prepare the food, it's quite a show. They was bone marrow flame melted over one dish, tons of black truffles shaved over another. The fish was exquisite and the wine paring spot on. This is a perfect date dinner place. If you happen to be so lucky to find the one, yes that one. The one who makes you tear up when you think about her, the one who catches you smiling at her when she's driving, and asks you 'what?' The one who when you kiss, she pulls you back in and grabs you tighter for a longer embrace. The one you cannot imagine taking another breathe without, because being next to her is softer, easier, just better. Thank you for making my life easier, softer, just better. My sun, I Love you, you're moon. 🖤🖤🖤

At the time of writing, the regular omakase experience of $159/person is a tremendous value and we absolutely loved the experience. Having been to several high end omakase spots in the country, this one definitely stands out because for the price they serve around 17 courses of fresh fish which for the most part comes from Japan. Each course was unique and had its own twist. The wasabi was fresh too and the three chefs were great to interact with, especially chef Mickey.

The only thing I would change is to add less butter on the A5 Wagyu nigiri. They serve A5 from Miyazaki, which is some of the finest meat in the world, and it already is so rich in flavor and marbling, meaning it doesn't need so much butter, only a pinch. But other than that, solid experience all in all.

Overall Omakase Experience: 4/5
Overall, the experience was decent.
At the end of the course, we were told that we could choose 1-3 extra "chef's choice" bites at al la carte prices and then after that, they said that we could then choose any extra bites that we've already had that night. I would've liked to be informed that we were able to choose to add any of the bites we just had at the end of the meal at the same time the chefs offered the extra chef's choice bites.
I didn't love the idea of having to wait until the chef completed all 12 pieces for each guest and then everyone having to cease conversations so that the chef could explain each bite.
I understand that it's part of the experience though. I should've researched more before committing to this establishment.
If you prefer the experience over everything else, this place is great.

Menu: 4/5
The menu was decent. We alternated between fatty bites and lean bites until the end where it was mainly fatty and rich.

Flavors: 3.8/5
Personally, I felt like the flavors weren't all cohesive. The tartare was a bit on the salty side but the crispy puffs gave it a nice balance in texture.
There were some bites where I thought that more citrus or herbs could've been used as it did not come out well enough.
The bite with the Vietnamese inspired caramelization (fish sauce + sugar) was too sweet. It was not what I was expecting when it was described; it should be a bit more savory.
There were lots of torched bites but I personally prefer the protein raw so that you can taste the full flavor of the fish.
I usually prefer fresh spotted prawns raw in a sushi experience but this one was a bit cooked with butter. The flavor was not bad, I quite enjoy buttered shrimp but the texture & flavor of botan ebi is more enjoyable fresh & raw.
When there is A5 Wagyu on the menu, it should be the star of that bite so you can taste the rich fattiness of the beef. The brown sugar miso overpowered the Wagyu.
One of my favorite bites was the unagi with bone marrow. That flavor pairing was one that I believed met expectations for the night.
Overall, I felt like the flavors were targeted for more western tastes buds which I enjoyed for what it was at face value.

Ambiance 3.5/5:
The ambiance was quaint and intimate. We were told to arrive 20 mins before our reservation to receive a welcome cocktail but you don't need to arrive that early.
Service was great.

Sushi Experience №129

Overall experience was ok. Not worth the price.
1-Price: if Google has the selection, I’ll share that we spent around $250 per person, even we didn’t choose any add on. I’ll talk more.
2-Secretive:
A) upon arrival, there is a decision made at check-in if we want to upgrade 3 dishes. When I asked to have a list when we sat down, the answer was no. That means you’re gonna pay extra without knowing the price. At other omakase places you have a menu to look at and decide.
B) at check-out, guests are lined up waiting for the cashier to charge you. You don’t see an itemized list, but just a total amount (with gratitude already included and you can choose to pay more!) showing on the machine to swipe your card with the pressure that people are waiting behind you.
3-Timing:
A) we arrived almost 15mins early, expecting to get started on time. However, there was a group before us, and they didn’t finish until our starting time. With the cleanup and setup, we needed to wait extra time. There was only one person doing all those check-out (did I mention the line?) then come to do introduction for us. We basically waited like half an hour sitting there (with the complimentary drink).
B) there were 3 chefs for 10 customers, but I don’t know why they operate so much more slower than the other Omakase I went to, which has only one Japanese chef but can provide food for each of us on time. There were several times being very awkward, like the first piece was delivered to half of the audience, while others were waiting and watching them eat, and some pieces would come all one by one (because 3 of them all completed!), and in the end if you don’t choose extra pieces, you have to watch others eat their bites 😂
4-overall taste: not great. I understand this is a more “innovative“ type of sushi, but I was looking for more raw fish taste. The idea was cool but the product is not great. Most of them are very average, and among the 16 pieces I received, I would say I only like 3 or 4 of them.

All of above concludes my review: the service, timing, quality, are not worth $240 per person. Since our bill should be the lowest, I wonder how do those people paying like $300 or more think about their experience.
I would recommend some other omakase places in Austin, which are transparent, punctual, with great taste of food.

I had come here 3-4 times before ownership changed & would have considered those 5 star experiences. Unfortunately with new ownership things are going downhill.

My husband & I had reservations here & ran into traffic on our way. My husband called to let the host know we would be a few late & she said it wasn't a problem but had some questions - specifically "Are you good with" (those specific words are crucial) foie gras on X piece, caviar on Y piece, & truffle on Z piece?". We confirmed we were good with those items.

In the past the omakase was fully self contained in the price we paid & any additional pieces after would be an additional fee so we didnt think much of these questions - especially since the flavors are polarizing and some people have ethical concerns with foie gras so we had assumed this was why we were being asked.

When we received the bill we were pretty shocked to see that the above mentioned items were actually up-charges. To be clear we did not expect this to be a cheap experience - we opted for a $150 bottle of sake and had all of the extra pieces available at the end of the meal added on so we definitely went all in.

However, I find the up-charged items to be out of left field for several reasons. 1. As a past server for over a decade I very much know what words to use when something is going to cost extra after dealing with several very disgruntled guests. Words like upgrade, add on, etc. imply an additional charge. However, asking if you are good with something makes it seems like a preference. 2. Offering upgrades defeats the spirit of an omakase in general in my opinion. Being asked about the upgrades publicly would make those who didnt opt in feel like they were missing out and those who did opt in are being price gouged to feel as if they arent missing out as well.

An omakase on its face is supposed to be the best the chef has to offer so either include these in the price/raise the price or get rid of them all together.

Mind blowing! The whole experience was amazing!

This omakase spot is right behind a restaurant with two very private kitchen table rooms. When you arrive, they check you in taking care of your dietary restrictions and serving a welcoming drink. Once the omakase starts, you are just blown away by each piece tasting fish you might be trying for the first time. The chefs are super friendly at explaining and transporting you into a journey of flavours, textures, and cultures behind this magical cuisine and each bite is a whole experience in itself.

The drinks are great and the server is nice, cordial and friendly - we had a sake glass and a cocktail and I definitely say that was well enough and worth it.

A very unique experience worth every second of it! 16 courses plus dessert for about $200 if you don’t order drinks and add-ons. Super recommended!

When we pulled up, the restaurant did not say Sushi Bar, so we were a little confused, but once we entered, we were ushered into a small intimate private room in the back.
I had been trying for months to get a reservation and I finally received an email with availability so I was very excited. I have tried almost every omakase experience in Austin and so far, not a single one has disappointed me.
I appreciated that they waited for the chatter to die down before explaining the preparation of each piece of fish. With the exception of 1 piece of fish every bite was amazing. I also loved talking to the guy that was tatted up in cool black and white koi fish tattoos. My husband and I are hoping to go skiing around Christmas in Aspen and they are opening up a sushi bar there called Madame Sushi. He also gave us tips on a few places around Aspen and I really appreciated that. I highly recommend Sushi Bar ATX and I will definitely be back.

We called, texted, AND emailed over 48 hours in advance (per their policy), but were told that since they were not in the office and available at the time, they were going to charge us the full meal and gratuity! (Note: we knowingly and willingly accepted the non-refundable deposit, and is not part of the issue).

We spent 2 days fighting this (they only responded via email) and ended up escalating to the management, who held firm on their stance. Eventually she agreed to do us the "favor" of refunding the cost of the meal as long as someone fulfills our reservation. We are still waiting to make sure that we are not going to be charged anything beyond the deposit.

Absolutely amazing experience! We loved the intimate setting and the casual conversations with the chefs. The 19 dishes/pieces are spread out over a 2h experience and if time allows, you can get 3 extra pieces (which nobody can refuse due to the experience, taste yet also peer pressure). The experience starts at $145pp but be prepared to pay around $350pp if you go all in with sake pairings and extras. If you enjoy quality food and a special experience, it's totally worth it.

The good: The fish was fresh, tasty, well presented, and made with some interesting accoutrement and pairings of flavors. The chefs were friendly and engaging and knowledgeable about the product. The atmosphere was great and it felt exclusive and private.
The bad: At the basic price point, it felt a little tacky that they upcharged a bunch of optional add-ons (like truffle, caviar). For a ritzy omakase it shouldn't feel like there's an effort to get more money from you. I bought one of them - and it was tasty but not worth the extra.
The verdict: Highly recommend the overall experience but do yourself a favor and skip the add-ons. I thought sake pairings were yummy (and fairly generous portions) but not directly paired with individual bites, a bit on the high side price-wise and I wouldn't do it again - just order drinks ala carte as you go.

Had an amazing experience last night at sushi bar! Our friend Chloe brought us and we couldn't have been more impressed with the format, creativity, service and flavor of the dinner. Highly recommend

This was such a fantastic date night! We started off with a watermelon mocktail that was really refreshing! The atmosphere had a low-key, unassuming vibe with good tunes. It was super casual so no need to dress up unless you want to. We had light hearted and fun conversations with the chefs (who are super funny and have great personalities). The food blew our minds! The quality of the fish, shellfish, and wagyu were top notch and all the extra flavoring they added were perfect! I loved the scallop, yellowtail, and escolar the most. We also had a snowcone with ice cream fusion dessert that was a perfect way to end the meal.
Be prepared for the bill: omikase is $145 per person and drinks are in the $10-20 each range (we got $10 mocktails). With tip we spent almost $400 for 2 people

The only bad thing I can say about Sushi Bar ATX is how hard it is to get a reservation... But take that with a grain of salt, because this place is incredible. One of the most special places I've had to eat at in Austin and I'd come every month if I could.

17 course Omakase at its finest. Beautiful presentation and even better background from the Executive Chef Amberly Ouimette. The opportunity was well worth the months long wait. And left my fiance and I curious and inspired as if we just left an art gallery. The teams camaraderie and enthusiasm is undeniable and a joy to experience.

Overall a great experience. The sushi pieces had pretty non traditional flavors. I enjoyed some of them but not all of them. The add on tri-color tuna was fantastic. The chefs were very friendly, and I thought the drinks guy was really good. He made me a sake strawberry bellini which I loved, and his tea at the end was amazing.
