Upscale Japanese restaurant offering a tasting menu, a sushi counter & booths, plus sake & wine.
One of the best sushi spots I’ve ever been to. The spicy tuna roll is always what I try as a standard roll at new places and this one did not disappoint. After telling the chef it was probably the best I’ve ever had, they brought me out a dish on the house. Their happy hour menu is super affordable, wine, a roll and an appetizer and I paid $23. Highly recommend.

After an enchanting evening watching the bats emerge from the Congress Bridge, we decided to indulge in a culinary adventure at Sushi Junai Omakase. The glowing reviews we had encountered online piqued our interest, and we were eager to walk down to see if the experience lived up to the hype.
Upon arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the warm and inviting atmosphere of Sushi Junai. Despite not having a reservation, the staff promptly seated us, which set a positive tone for our dining experience. The restaurant’s decor was tasteful, blending modern aesthetics with traditional Japanese elements that made us feel comfortable and welcomed.
The menu offered a variety of selections that catered to different tastes, showcasing both classic sushi options and unique creations. We appreciated the thoughtful presentation of each dish, which added to the overall dining experience. To our delight, the food arrived much faster than we anticipated. This efficiency did not compromise quality; each piece of sushi was fresh and expertly prepared.
The customer service at Sushi Junai was exceptional. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our needs were met throughout the meal. They were knowledgeable about the menu and provided recommendations that enhanced our dining experience.
Overall, our visit to Sushi Junai Omakase exceeded expectations. From the swift service to the delicious food and attentive staff, everything contributed to a memorable evening. I would definitely return for another meal in the future

First time I'm leaving a review before finishing a meal. Eddy, the chef, is spot on. He's attentive, and can customize on the fly based on your tastes. Hands down the best salmon I've had. Tim is also great at making sure I'm happy and have a full cup of sake.

Chef Eddy made the omakase experience that much better. We’ve tried a few omakase experiences in Austin and really believe this is a hidden gem.
Very romantic atmosphere and intimate setting with the chefs bar side. They have great manners, very knowledgeable and courteous. They offered a couple more servings of our favorite bite.
Highly recommend the Fatty Tuna and Wagyu 🤤

This was really great sushi
I definitely recommend not doing the Omakasa. You can order the same dishes and being in control yourself and avoid the dishes. They’re not that appetizing on the chef tasting
The wagyu, the miso cod, and the screaming o are must haves

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The omakase here is so creative. It was so enjoyable and an adventure to go through. At the end you get to choose another piece of something you already had and we both got the A5. It’s crazy delicious and absolutely melts in your mouth.
We also come for happy hour because it’s the best happy hour in town. Great price on Asahi and the sushi is still amazing quality even for HH.
I think Sushi Junai is such a hidden gem. We’ll keep coming back!

Highly recommend this place. Came here for my wife’s birthday. So glad we did. We had the full Omakase experience with 15 dishes. Each dish just got better and better as we progressed. Sean was awesome and great at educating us on what we were eating and very knowledgeable about each dish. Great atmosphere. Beautiful cherry blossom trees inside with a large wrap around bar where you can watch the chefs as your meals are prepared. Will be back!

By far best sushi spot to date here in Austin! Service, quality, and ambiance made for a memorable experience with co-workers celebrating a birthday. We huddled up at the sushi bar and had the pleasure of seeing our eye catching dishes crafted with precision and care. Thank you and I look forward to coming back soon!

Had omakase. The first dish (egg) was VERY salty. It was very hard to hear what the chef was saying. All my other companions couldn’t hear what he was saying. 1/3 of course were good and rest of them were meh. Every time when the chef torched food, torch over flavored everything. The dessert, crème brûlée, was the worst one so far I had in my life (it sounds extreme but it’s true)
The staffs were very nice but I will try somewhere else for omakase in the future if I have to pay about the same price.

The food was really great and staff were nice, but the ambiance & environment was really bad. We got the omakase, and they served items that are very different than every other omakase in Austin. That was great.
But just about everything about the environment made it feel like nobody cared. Specifically:
- the floors were sticky
- bathroom was dirty
- and worst of all, we sat at the counter and promptly at 9:25pm with at least 20 minutes to go in our meal, they started cleaning sushi prep area right in front of us, including mopping the floor, taking out trash, etc. We had to eat our final omakase servings while smelling purple Fabuloso cleaner, which is gross.

Worth-it tier: C. Visits: 1. Slightly under expectations. Omakase menu on website had 2 more of the important courses than the actual experience.
2 appetizer & 2 mains less than the online menu. Foie gras was replaced with uni.
Definitely a few great nigiris. Service & atmosphere was good.

I recently dined at Junai Sushi Omakase in Austin, and the experience was nothing short of amazing. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed with warm hospitality and an inviting atmosphere.
Our server, Sonny, truly made our evening exceptional. He expertly guided us through the menu, introducing us to a variety of specialties and even some secret sushi items that aren't on the menu. His knowledge and enthusiasm for the food were evident, and his recommendations were spot on.
The sushi was fresh, expertly crafted, and bursting with flavor. Each piece was a work of art, showcasing the chef's skill and dedication to quality. The service was impeccable and impressively fast, ensuring we never had to wait long between courses.
Junai Sushi Omakase is undoubtedly a 5-star dining experience. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy top-notch sushi and exceptional service. Sonny's guidance and the restaurant's overall excellence make it a must-visit spot in Austin.

We ordered the USA roll and some sake.

There is a subtle discomfort for customers from the time they are seated to when they place their orders. There is only one server, and their hospitality skills are lacking. The food quality is reasonable for the price, and the atmosphere of the place is not bad. However, the way the staff treat customers is far from sufficient if they want to receive good reviews.

Nice sushi selection, the luxury trio of A5 wagyu, Uni and Otoro Tuna belly was pretty awesome. Tempura wasnt great, batter was way too thick to be called Tempura, was a bit stodgy. But thats just a small criticism as the sushi nigiri were all great.

Great spot for 2! Food is made on order, is quick, and delicious! They have a happy hour from 5-6:30 for slightly discounted sushi and more ^^ while they have a few booths, most seating is along the bar by the chefs, so I recommend for smaller parties :) overall, I loved it here! It is upstairs from the building entrance, so be aware of that

Terrible location, terrible parking, and not wheelchair accessible at all. Basic sushi you can find anywhere around Austin... not sure why Omakase is in the restaurant name.
The table arrangements are absolutely not wheelchair accessible.
The place shares an entry with The Elephant Room Jazz club line of people that blocks the doorway and makes it impossible to get handicapped people in. Then there are stairs up to the restaurant with no ramp or elevator for wheelchair access.

Excellent sushi, prices, and service in a small, unexpected, quiet place. Gotta try the Candy Cane roll! They have happy hour Monday through Saturday until 6:30; $5 Riesling, $6 cab, several really decent $5 rolls… it’s a small place, smells like fabuloso, and music needs improvement, but has excellent sushi. This is my favorite sushi spot in Austin for quality to price; it's easily better than some other more expensive spots in the same area.
The sushi quality is very good—it's always very fresh, the texture is great, and the flavor is consistently very good to excellent. I'm a big fan of uni, which is difficult find in good quality, and I'm always impressed with it here. The rice is pretty much perfect: cooked well, seasoned well, and at the perfect temperature for nigiri. The soy sauce and faux wasabi are good quality, and you can ask for their wonderful fresh, real wasabi.
I've always ordered a la carte, so I don't know what the omakase meal is like, but I'm sure it's great. The interior decoration is nice, and the staff are friendly and usually quick.

Sushi Junai Omakase in Austin isn't just a sushi spot; it's a flavor-filled adventure for your taste buds! As newcomers, we were greeted like VIPs from the get-go – the staff made us feel right at home, explaining the menu with a friendly enthusiasm that instantly won us over.
Now, let's talk about the sushi. Fresh doesn't even begin to cover it – it's like they have a direct line to the ocean's flavor hotline. Each piece is a tiny masterpiece, exploding with taste like a culinary firework show in your mouth. I swear, it's sushi wizardry happening back there in the kitchen.
And the setting? Cozy doesn't do it justice. It's like dining in a tastefully decorated friend's living room, if that friend happened to be a sushi aficionado with impeccable taste in decor. The ambiance adds an extra layer of magic to the whole experience.
Sushi Junai Omakase isn't just a meal; it's a delightful journey through taste and texture, guided by a team that genuinely loves what they do. If you're in Austin and you haven't treated your taste buds to this gem, you're seriously missing out on a sushi experience with personality, charm, and a whole lot of yum! 🍣✨

During lunch you can get pretty good sushi for decent prices. But service is quite slow. Also they were unable to accommodate my group of 8, which is surprising for a sushi restaurant, I would have thought sushi a common option for special occasions. But we had to sit at two separate tables.

One of the best omakase’s I’ve ever had. The three beginning appetizers were creative with the different flavor an texture combinations that was the perfect opening act to some of the freshest nigiri I’ve ever tasted. Rebecca was my server and made this experience even more memorable. She knew in detail each of the flavors of the dishes and asked what was my favorite component. I now have a new favorite uni because of her! Five stars is not a high enough rating for how wonderful this experience was.

We ordered Champagne bottle, it was over, because busy days due to formula 1. We ordered another bottle, sparkling, and it was over as well. $400 for 2, and you don't have wines that are on the menu? Our omakase menu was with 9 dishes per person, 2 desserts. We ordered additional sushi plates. They serve the dishes too fast... and omakase menu is to enjoy with each bite. We wanted a la carte menu, but they said our reserve was for omakase, in the bar. However, many people in the bar were taking dinner a la carte.
𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀
Some hits and misses. It would be good to have a menu with dish descriptions. The waiter explains the dish quickly, with more than 6,7, or more ingredients, and it's impossible to remember.
𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗽 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗼
May be it was the most surprise me. However, 1 shrimp for 2, tail for her and head for me. Why? With $400 is not possible, serve 1 shrimp per each? The head was very good, but also I wanted to taste the tail.
𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗿𝗶 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗲𝘀
Awful
𝗗𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁
Last one, like a crème brûlée with whipped cream from the jam, awful. The other, a ridiculously small piece of sponge cake, very taste, but it was 1oz or less.
𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲
The waiter it seems to get mad when I told him that the F1 was scheduled a lot of time ago. So I didn't understand the excuse to don't have champagne available. Sorry, the $400 bottle it was available....
𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: it's an omakase menu with 7-9 dishes that try to surprise you. Sometimes, surprise you well, sometimes bad. I don't come back.

The worst Omakase menu I’ve ever had ☹️ It was done in 45 minutes and costed $400 - complete waste of money and the only thing that was good was the one serving of Nigiris.
Normally when we get Omakase menus it takes a long time, and it’s a lot of well tasting servings, and here it was bland dishes and than when we thought we were half way through the 18 “dishes” the waiter told us it was the last dish. It was a total shock that it was over, as it was explained as 18 individual dishes, but apparently the single serving with 8 nigiries counted for 8 out of the 18 dishes 😒
The waiter was not good, and she didn’t clean the table at each serving. She also poured the bottles of water and beer without bringing the bottles to the table, which was super annoying, and not what a decent waiter normally do - unless it’s a fountain drink, which it was not.
All in all it was the worst Omakase dinner we’ve ever had!!! And for the price of $400 a total rip-off ☹️
I would not recommend anyone to go here for the Omakase. IF you go here, order the Nigiries, and for sure NOT the Omakase menu. Seriously 45 min Omakase for $400 - ridiculous!

By far my favorite sushi restaurant in Austin. Not pretentious just high quality fish that is well cut. We have tried all the sushi places in town…Otoko, Uchi, Uchiko, Sushibar ATX etc but this is our favorite. Staff is professional and welcoming. Just a great spot!

Literally my favorite sushi place in Austin! Also, great happy hour :)

Honestly one of the best happy hour specials in the city! They have great roll options starting at $6, and have plenty of creative options such as "Pearl Special" and "who's your daddy" and "who's your ex-wife"
Definitely save room for apps, the Gyoza and Escolar Capaccio are great starters, followed by their Fried Eggplant

Worst place in Austin

Got food poisoning here. Feel like it’s important to warn other people. The food tasted kinda not the freshest in the very beginning. We didn’t finish our meals , because it was just not tasty.
As a result - food poisoning!

The worst experience I’ve ever had in all my life. Please don’t eat here! Not even for money, but more for how bad the food and service is.

AVOID THIS HORRIBLE PLACE with AGGRESSIVE STUFF!
Firstly- Food is absolutely horrible, fish is chewy, saulty and impossible to eat.
But other than that and the most important is the stuff. I will start from the beginning. We tried a piece of sushi, 1 piece! and it was disgusting, we asked to return it and the server Sunny said that it’s not possible . He took the plate with sushi of the table BUT left the roll in the check. When we gave the credit card to pay, he returned our card without receipt and refused to give us one. When we insisted to get a receipt- which is required by law, he brought it and yelled in my face: “The door is there!!” It was very aggressive and I honestly never in my life have not experienced this kind of behavior and especially not at the restaurant.
I’m speechless but I really think you should avoid this place. Save your money for businesses that deserve it.

Best sushi place in Austin by far! The service there is incredible and the food comes out almost instantly after you order. We love the quality of the fish the serve, clean upscale setting, and the happy hour ($5 sushi rolls and appetizers) they have from 5-6:30. Definitely worth going to if you are looking for your new favorite sushi restaurant in Austin!

Food: We ordered three starters and three mains. The highlight for me was the Black Cod Misoyuan-Yaki plate - when the menu said it's baked to perfection it really is! The seasoning on it is excellent. The other highlight was the Agedashi tofu, which was perfectly fried with a light crisp exterior and a soft interior that just melted in our mouthes. The food was all expertly seasoned and tasted fresh. A lot of downtown Japanese food features ghastly over-seasoning and dousing in super-sweet / salty sauce - Junai was the opposite and just perfect! We loved all the dishes except the Gyoza, which we would've skipped next time since it was dry.
Starters:
Gyoza (5pc) (Pan fried Japanese style dumplings) 7
Agedashi Tofu (Silken firm tofu, is lightly dusted with potato starch and deep fried until golden brown) 8
Chicken Karaage (Japanese cooking technique in which chicken are deep fried in oil) 9
Mains:
SASHIMI DINNER - Sashimi (10pc) + Classic Roll + Seaweed salad 32
Black Cod Misoyuan-Yaki Plate
(Marinated in Saikyo Miso and baked to perfection, Black Cod with Miso & Soy and asparagus, mushroom, onion, carrot) 25
Seafood Yaki Udon (Assorted seafood and vegetable, stir fried udon noodle) 12
Service was excellent. We were graciously seated by the hostess and had our orders taken. The kitchen was flexible and offered to accommodate some our party, who wanted cooked fish instead of raw sashimi.
Ambience felt like a Japanese oasis in the middle of downtown Austin. Junai is tucked above a bar but the entryway opens to a faux Sakura tree, which breaks down the booth segment of the restaurant from the omakase bar segment.
Value: Our total (food, tax, and tip) came out to just under $120, which was mid-range to pricy ($40/person for starter and non-pricy main) but we felt it was worth it given we were exceedingly stuffed with delicious food paired with great service.
Overall, I loved Junai and can't wait to return and taste their perfectly cooked Black Cod Misoyuan-Yaki plate again.

The food was phenomenal. Best Sashimi I've ever had👏. Staff was bored because it wasn't busy but I don't know why it wasn't.
Some hard to find fish and prices were mederately priced. Asari Miso soup with clams was amazing. I could've ate more eel but it wasn't because $40 of grade A Sashimi and soup. They also served me a bonus ahi tuna that had to be the butchers cut.

I ordered a dinner combo. It was ok! Nothing that special. Im giving 3 stars because of the service. It was terrible. The girl who took my orders was very rude.

Every thing we ordered was really good, first time here, fish was really tasty and the Chicken Karaage was addictive, I also liked miso soup and the seaweed salad was delectable as well. I got the sushi dinner with 7 pcs my brother got the sashimi dinner. The chefs work relentlessly to work on art looking dishes/rolls would definitely come back. It’s upscale so keep that in mind.

Such a great place! As soon as you walk in, the waitstaff is friendly and welcoming. Let me tell you about the sushi, it’s fresh and prolly the best I’ve had in Austin so far! The variety is great even for the most experience sushi eater.
Alex makes you feel at home and is very entertaining! Shoutout to the entire support staff as well!
