About This Sushi Bar

Located on Austin’s vibrant South Congress Ave., Neighborhood Sushi serves Japanese-inspired dishes in a casual & beautiful setting. The reimaged space was home to Lou Lambert’s Liberty Pie & Catering, where Larry McGuire got his start 20 years ago.

Neighborhood Sushi provides guests an approachable sushi experience with influences of Texas flavors, Japanese design and Austin hospitality. Fresh & light soups, salads and small plates follow traditional sushi bar inspirations. Enjoy a selection of crispy seafood and local vegetable tempura with a Hitachino on draft out back on the Congress facing Sake Garden.

Nigiri in classic cuts of Japanese Red Snapper, Sea Bream and Santa Barbara Uni are complemented by vegetarian preparations of Texas

Sushi Experience №1

Before you go, know that the entrance is tucked away in the back parking lot, giving the place a hidden, speakeasy-like feel. The immediate impression is one of minimalist elegance—stone walls and a dim, yet warmly lit interior that made you feel welcomed. The seating options are all beautiful, and there’s a faint smell of incense.

The food, however, felt more like a Western take on Japanese cuisine, with flavors leaning heavily on teriyaki and buttery, fried sweet potato elements. The sushi wagyu was a bit odd to eat, with the outside cooked but the inside cold, creating a jarring contrast. The scallop nigiri special was a little too heavy on the butter taste and the topping is like crushed sweet potato chips, which didn’t quite hit for me.

Other downsides included a wait at the front desk, and the inability to watch the chefs prepare sushi, which would have been nice. While the atmosphere was nice, the food wasn’t doing it for me.

Woooooww!! When I moved to Texas I thought I would be doomed in a sushi-less pit of despair where everything was tasteless. This place offers extremely fresh quality sushi that I am surprised to find this far inland. As someone who has lived on multiple coasts, of course this doesn't live up to the oceanside just-caught magnificence. However, they do the best they possibly can here! Thank you for being here

Today was our first time at Neighborhood Sushi. What a treat! There are some very creative dishes here. Be sure and try the beet cured salmon, the salmon handroll, the yellowtail collarbone, King Salmon nigiri, and fluke nagiri. Staff were friendly and attentive, and the vibe is chill. Check them out!

The nigiri is far below average — ESPECIALLY for an upscale sushi restaurant. Staff was friendly, even though the runners had trouble telling us what they were serving. The cocktails were good, but man. Just wanted this place to be better. Save your time and go to uchiko instead.

A Comedy of Errors: Why We’ll Never Return to Neighborhood Sushi

Oh, where do I even begin? Everything about our experience here was a nightmare, and not the fun, spooky kind. My boyfriend made an 8:30 pm reservation, which required putting in his credit card information. That’s a level of commitment we rarely even show to Netflix. Naturally, we were excited and ravenous by the time we arrived 15 minutes early.

We checked in at the hostess stand and were told it’d be just a few minutes. Fair enough. We sat in their tiny waiting area, stomachs growling like feral cats, but we stayed patient. That patience wore thin, though, as other groups came in, checked in, and were seated ahead of us. Still, we waited. At 8:55—yes, 25 minutes after our reservation time—I went to the hostess to check in again. “Oh yes, your table’s ready!” she said. Um, excuse me? We’ve been sitting directly in front of you for 40 minutes and you just remembered?

But we were too hungry to start a scene, so we followed her to our table. We waited. And waited some more. Finally, someone arrived to fill our water glasses. A little later, our server appeared, and we wasted no time placing our order: edamame, a crudo, and three rolls. Yes, we were that hungry. She took the order, smiled, and then vanished.

Minutes ticked by. Then more minutes. The edamame—a dish that involves boiling water and sprinkling salt—didn’t arrive. Instead, we got the crudo, four delicate pieces of amberjack sashimi that might’ve satisfied a toddler on a diet but did nothing for our raging hunger. Where was the edamame? We asked, and she said she’d check. Then she disappeared again, like a magician with an allergy to eye contact.

By 9:25 pm—an hour after our reservation—we had nothing but water, four pieces of sashimi, and an existential crisis. The server avoided us like we’d just asked her to split the check 17 ways, and no food was in sight. That’s when we threw in the towel. We left cash for the crudo and walked out, stomachs empty, hearts broken.

Enter Gratas, the unsung hero of the night. One phone call later, we were en route to their glorious pizza, which was ready and waiting when we arrived. By the time we sunk our teeth into that cheesy perfection, I’m 99% sure our sushi still hadn’t left the kitchen.

The moral of the story? Neighborhood Sushi can’t handle the heat. The service was abysmal. We get it, places get busy—but this was outrageous. Hire more staff, train them better, something. In the end, Gratas saved our night, and we will never set foot in this place again.

Good sushi but a little pricier than others.

The Uni nigiri was fresh, sweet and with that metallic flavor that lesser quality one has.
Chirashi was a little disappointing. It was a good size but the fish was simply standard.
Yellowtail tartare was good, didn't taste too much of the wasabi from the wasabi soy sauce though. Quite small.
Steamed egg custard was a little overcooked, it's usually almost watery texture but it felt like a flan. Great flavors though.

Side note, the front door is exit only. You have to go around and enter through the back entrance. Weird, I guess this fit the Austin weird vibe.

Fantastic spot! I absolutely love the all black entrance and vibe it sets being semi hidden off of South Congress. I arrived before the rest of my party and the front of house staff were so sweet and allowed me to order drinks while waiting. They have a uniquely curated wine list - the sauv blanc is fantastic. My friends loved the Drunken Angel cocktail and it was absolutely adorable!

There were 3 of us in my party and we ordered a smattering of everything. Next time I’ll have to try the fish collar but I loved the tartare I ordered off of the specials menu! We also ordered tempura squash, tempura eggplant, the sweet potatoes, several salmon and yellowtail belly nigiri, a spicy tuna roll and a scallop roll. I didn’t have

Fish is very high quality and some of the best I’ve had in Austin. I was a bit disappointed to learn that they do not do their lunch combos on the weekends. exceptional sushi served without much fuss; individual pieces were fantastic, but hand rolls were delicious inside with soggy nori.

snow crab was amazing

When you serve hand rolls they have to be brought right to the table; in this case they sat for far too long and the nori was a soggy mess instead of crispy

Rating on a curve, given the $350 subtotal for two. Sushi was about on the level of what you'll get at a mid-end establishment in Tokyo with equivalent ambiance. Initially seated in a corner at the smallest table on earth like a couple of flea-bitten mutts, which is odd because not only did we have a reservation but the place was also nearly empty and there was ample space for us to spread out. The second seating location was also uncomfortable, and stools were uncomfortable. I'm sure they went to a lot of effort to effect a certain aesthetic, but they missed the mark on comfort which I dare say is kind of important at any price point but I digress. Alcoholic beverages were great and I'd say fairly priced for the quality of both the flavor profile and the presentation. Mixologist apparently has a rotating menu of cocktails and all 3 my friend and I tried became topics of conversation. If you want my opinion on the way to order fish at this place, you go with the nigiri not the sashimi, because while the visual presentation of the sashimi is excellent, the flavor is too subtle to be noteworthy. The sushi rice is prepared so beautifully, and basically made the dish no matter which piece we tried.

Sushi Experience №40

For certain, one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin, TX and comparable to any sushi I have had anywhere. We came early afternoon and it was pretty quiet. Although the restaurant faces the main street, the entrance is around the back and can be easily missed. Once inside, we were seated right away.

They have booths, tables and a sizeable sushi bar. Never having been here before, I wanted to try a few things different than my traditional sushi orders at other places. We started off with Miso soup and the Neighborhood salad. The soup was good but it's kind of hard to make bad miso soup. The salad was okay... there are better ginger dressings.

As an appetizer, we had the Miso glazed Sweet Potato Yaki. It is good and I do recommend. I just don't know what makes this a Japanese dish. To check the quality of the fish we had Yellowtail and Fatty Tuna Nigiri. The fish is incredible and you would have a hard time finder fresher fish. To finish, we had the Salmon Avocado Crunch hand rolls.

I know we are in Austin where they seemed to make everything look like a taco... this place is no different. They even served them in what looked like taco serving platters. I did a Google search for a "tuna hand roll" and after looking at hundreds of photos... I never saw a single one that looked anything like theirs. So, before people start their attacks, when I read "hand roll" on the menu, I had a certain expectation and this was not it. The ingredients are good... but I did not want to eat something that is going to fall apart like a taco. And if I wanted a taco, I would have gone somewhere and ordered a taco. I wish I could have at least had the option; the server could have asked if we wanted it as a traditional hand roll. And before you tell me it's the chef's creation.... the chef is not paying me to eat this. I am paying, so yes, I do have certain expectations.

There is another popular sushi restaurant down the street that is not nearly as good when talking about fish quality. But we do know of some other sushi spots in Austin that have equally as good fish and about half the price and more traditional. Good quality fish, but too expensive and I prefer my sushi served in a traditional manner.

My fiancé and I dined in for the first time 2 nights ago. We had an amazing time & that was mainly due to our outstanding server, Paisley. She was so kind, bubbly, attentive, and knowledgeable. We really enjoy going on omakase/nigiri dates (in general) so this restaurant was perfect. I even like this place more than uchi. The atmosphere was lovely & chill too.

We ordered the pork app, variety nigiris, and crudo. All were delicious. The temperature & taste were on point for all dishes. Drinks were great too, but probably would need an extra shot of liquor & less ice. All in all we had an amazing experience & can’t wait to come back! Thank you, Paisley, for making our first experience everything and more!

(Disclaimer: forgot to take a pic of our other nigiri plate)

Have been coming in for over 3 years now, never disappointed. It is not ultra fancy, but you can always count on them for quality. In my experience, any Japanese restaurant with limited choice and menu is usually a positive sign. And this place is just like that, limited but consistent freshness and taste. I also love the atmosphere a lot, from the plastered wall to the warm wood and complementary kitchen tiles. The whole place looks clean, warm and dynamic. Staff members are friendly and professional.

Nestled on the vibrant South Congress Street in Austin, this sushi gem is a true culinary oasis. From the moment you step inside, you're transported to a world of exquisite flavors and artful presentation. The star of the show is undoubtedly their selection of premium fish, with the sea bream, bluefin chutoro, and otoro standing out as absolute knockouts. Each piece is a testament to the chef's skill and dedication to sourcing the finest ingredients. The melt-in-your-mouth texture of the otoro and the delicate balance of flavors in the sea bream left me speechless.

But the excellence doesn't stop at the sushi. The dessert offerings are equally impressive, with their ice cream and shaved ice dessert providing the perfect sweet finale to an outstanding meal. The contrast between the creamy ice cream and the light, refreshing shaved ice creates a delightful textural experience that cleanses the palate and satisfies any sweet tooth. Whether you're a sushi aficionado or simply looking for an exceptional dining experience, this South Congress Street treasure is not to be missed. It's a must-visit destination that showcases the best of what Austin's culinary scene has to offer.

Nestled in the heart of South Congress, Neighborhood stands out as one of the best sushi options in a city with no shortage of quality choices.

Not the cheapest meal you’ll have in town, but also not overpriced in any way. The quality in the food, service, and ambiance is clear and worth your hard earned food dollars.

We were pushed to a super small middle table despite having a reservation that was for the bar. We had a good time but I have to say the hostess was pretty condescending (after a 30min wait) while the space we were served in was so small that I shifted my arms when tapped on the shoulder and the waiter spilled miso soup all over our table. It was an accident but the whole thing spoke to how limited our interaction space was. Overall was fine but did not hold up to the $300 dollar bill we had at the end of the night.

Foo foo sushi, way over priced. I felt like a tourist in that place, like I was being played for a fool. Tiny servings, greasy tempura and a really limited menu. What is really frustrating is the entrance is in a back alley and there’s no sign up front OR in the alley, just a placard that says food delivery parking only. We walked out after spending 70 bucks, including tip and no booze, still hungry and with indigestion. I think that was from the mixed vegetable tempura which was basically shoestring veggies with batter on them. All batter and cold grease, no veggie.

First time here and it was incredible! Creative and super fresh sushi with a fun urban but also traditional Japanese atmosphere. Highly recommend. We had a very large group too and they accommodated us well.

This is for sure one of my favorite sushi spots in Austin. All of the sushi was spectacular.

It’s that simple.

We loved the tempura and the grilled edamame. The Drunken Angel cocktail was as delicious as a pina colada.

This place is LEGIT. The sushi and sashimi are delicious. The atmosphere is relaxed. The staff are attentive and friendly. The entrance is hidden in the back which is kinda cool.

I love this sushi bar, the lunch bento box was great! The snow crab hand rolls are amazing, and the seabream nigiri are delicious! The tempura was light and not greasy like other tempuras and the sea weed salad was elevated with saffron. Great atmosphere and great drinks!

Good sushi, expensive but more reasonable prices if you come for happy hour.

Edit: sushi no longer cheaper during happy hour. this place is great but i think it's a tad bit expensive, so I'm docking a star.

Sushi was yummy and came out relatively quickly. I recommend the edamame, tuna tataki, hand rolls, and fatty salmon. Service could have been better. Server rushed us, put the wrong (more expensive) order in, and wasn't very friendly.

Yes, it’s expensive for the portions. But everything that comes from this kitchen is gold. I LOVE the egg drop soup!! There is such a depth of flavor I simply cannot find anywhere else. The fish is fresh, the service is casual but attentive, and the atmosphere is welcoming with free parking in the lot.

Fantastic spot on South Congress. Discrete entrance in the back adds some uniqueness to the experience. Some of the best, most unique sake cocktails I've ever had..the server made some great recommendations and the sushi was as good as it gets!

This is an amazing spot to go with small groups or on date night! The lighting is warm and romantic and I love sitting at the bar. You can’t go wrong with any sushi pieces or the eggplant (DELICIOUS! One of the best I’ve had!) and the fried ice cream is delicious and delightful to crack into.

There’s parking available in the lot behind the place, just fair warning that the entrance isn’t super obvious — it’s a giant door without a sign. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because they consistently have forgotten part of my order, which delayed the meal.

Had a reservation for 2. Took 15 min before we had our drink order taken, ordered two soups but only one was brought to our table. Server didn’t return for another 20 min to take our order, at that point we paid for our drinks one soup (charged for two soups) and left. Wasn’t worth staying for the food after waiting a full 35 min before our order was being taken. Definitely will not be back.

Very disappointing for a MMH restaurant.

Overall a good lunch experience. The decor was very clean and modern and the service was excellent. The food tasted good but like some of the other reviews, it is a bit over priced. The hand roll was visually nice but difficult and messy to eat. Plus hand rolls are nice when it’s immediately served so the nori has a crunch. Our hand roll nori lacked the crunch factor.

The food is very good but I think overpriced. The special roll with tuna, avocado and shishito tempura was excellent. The Japanese mackerel, salmon, and trout sashimi were also terrific. The specialty nigiri were fantastic except that we didn’t care as much for the squid tentacles. Service was spotty and somewhat inattentive. The restaurant is loud, very loud and the seating is not all that comfortable but no one seemed to mind.

Been here twice. I wasn’t impressed the first time (almost 2 years ago) but I wanted sushi last minute and close to home, so thought I’d give it another try. Got some Shishito peppers for an appetizer and one of them was SOOO spicy I had to ask for ice. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯” not super common but I guess can be expected . The yellowtail nigiri was buttery, the yellowtail roll with scallion and ponzu was great. My bf got spicy tuna and didn’t enjoy it as much. The salmon crunchy hand roll was not super flavorful, salmon didn’t taste fresh. Also one hand roll roll was $12! (Yukon handroll bar-$6.50) I do love the interior design of the place . Our server did not seem happy to be there though :) I think for Uchi prices I would have loved it to be better :)

This is a great spot for sushi. The food might be a bit overpriced but it’s very good quality. The first time that me and my partner went, we were celebrating my new job. It was a great evening and it turned out to be the funniest as I discovered my partner had been eating the whole edamame since day 1. I still make fun of him for eating edamame wrong.

Neighborhood Sushi is a too go place for us both for special occasions or for sushi cravings. I definitely suggest the beet infused sake cocktail. If you don't drink alcohol mock-tails are delicious, too.
I usually order the same nigiri and sashimi pieces like yellowtail, tuna, and salmon and one seasonal selection from menu. This time it was the oyster. I definitely recommend.
My only concern is the noise because of the low ceiling.

Be sure to try the egg drop soup. Some of the best I've ever had. The handrolls are packed and are def the best value on the menu. If it's a weekday, get the two for one lunch special. Everything is nice and fresh. I've eaten here several times and have not been disappointed!

We had the best time on our first visit here and plan to go back soon. Finding the door was the only problematic (but honestly not that much of an issue) part of the entire experience. Wonderful warm and chill atmosphere, no pretentious fussiness, perfect service. The food exceeded expectations on nearly every dish.

TOURIST TRAP!!!
I've lived in multiple places in my life and popped up to Austin for a weekend get away. I ate at neighborhood sushi and left hungry. I've never eaten at another restaurant after eating at a restaurant. Definitely way over market value on a lot of items. As some one who eats sushi most times than I can count, a lot of their items were incredibly over priced, or the portions were way to small especially for a hand roll. I was not impressed. Food is decent be prepared to pay the premium for it.
