Ordered takeout. Immediately get a message that says they are super busy and the order will take 45 minutes. Unfortunately for them I was sitting outside and could see the restaurant completely empty. I go in after 15 minutes and they have the order out immediately and the girl smirks at me and says "made fresh just for you". Who says that? Give them the benefit of the doubt? Nope. Food was old and chewy and clearly been sitting out and tasted kind of sour. On top of all that I paid ridiculous fees to order online. Never going back.

Each piece was fresh, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. I especially loved the Dragon Roll and Sweet Stacy Roll. The Dragon Roll had the perfect balance of flavors with its rich eel and avocado, while the Sweet Stacy Roll was a delightful mix of sweetness and savory goodness that I couldn’t stop raving about. Maki Toki was the first restaurant I tried sushi at and I will never need to try anywhere else. My mind was blown beyond expectations with the selection of sushi available, the amazing customer service, and the high quality sushi that is served. This is one of the best family owned restaurants in the Austin area and not just when it comes to sushi. Our server Tima has provided excellent and thorough service for us time and time again. My favorite aspect of Maki Toki is how beautifully the food is presented on every occasion AND they have the best tasting/strongest margaritas you can find.

This is the first established that I have encountered that has a separate menu for their AYCE items, which is more limited. I had to constantly compare the two menus to see if the rolls I wanted was AYCE. It was a good place to try and a good time for date night.

I’ve seen this restaurant often when going to Walgreens at W Braker and Metric and FINALLY ate there for an early lunch today. What a smart decision! I had the soft shell crab appetizer (I was raised on The Eastern Shore of VA and I know good crabs!) and yellowtail tuna nigiri. Each dish was perfect. Crab was crispy, non oily, with that sweet white interior you crave and included lovely asparagus - an unexpected extra in an appetizer. I guess when you order a certain amount you are given a free miso soup, and the soup was steaming and so flavorful. I could not finish it and when given my to go container they had topped up my soup to a full bowl! What a gracious and surprising touch. The menu is extensive and I plan to bring friends and family to delve into more yumminess. This is a hidden jewel and I’m sure the only reason there were only a few of us is because I arrived at opening time. I highly recommend!

Order delivery from this place for the first time and I’m not impressed.
Philadelphia rolls tasted weird. Fish wasn’t fresh.
Calamari tested weird as well.
420 roll where really good.

Delivery was super fast.

Honestly one of the worst meals I’ve ever eaten.

I’m not sure the restaurant owner has any idea what “tempura” means. Or “katsu”. Or “sushi” for that matter.

I ordered a tonkatsu bento. Even the rice was awful: it was freaking *minute rice*. Yes, that’s right, a 22 dollar “Japanese” meal came with instant rice, and it wasn’t even shortgrained rice. Instead of katsu sauce, it included some rank pink sauce (NOT yumyum sauce, as I had initially hoped). Instead it veggie tempura, it came with three pieces of oily fried vegetables with no panko anywhere on them. The katsu itself was also foul, drenched in old oil and breaded in some stuffy, dense garbage instead of panko.

Even the California roll managed to be pointless, though perhaps that was due to not even coming out with wasabi.

And the prices? Like, I can’t cut them a break, I paid 30 dollars for lunch with a soda. The only way you’re hitting that 10-20 dollar range the google page claims is if you just order miso soup and don’t leave a tip.

Abysmal. I hate to be so negative but there was ***nothing*** redeeming about this. Not a single decent item.

I can respect a restaurant trying to make a living, but food is not worth the prices they charge. Tempura was meh, katsu was meh, sushi was meh. My tipping point was paying $12 for 2 balls of mochi ice cream that got topped with whipped cream and chocolate syrup. Spend your money on better food at the dozens of legitimate asian restaurants surrounding the area. Won’t go back.

I know all palettes and tastes differ but this spot misses the mark but a lot. Please save your money and time and avoid at all costs, and just Go to a real Asian sushi spot. This shit literally feels like a side project some retirees are trying out for something to do with their time. The food is bad, the atmosphere is bland and obviously manufactured to give off an authentic vibe but it's dismal. The art on the wall is exceptionally BAD as well.

I love this place because it’s really good and so close to where I live. Unfortunately, I can't drag my friends here because their happy hour has no wine specials and that’s all we drink. Hopefully that changes. I do appreciate that they have gluten free soy sauce. That’s a deal breaker for me.

This is such a wholesome place! Cross between a mom/pop sushi place and a chill neighbor bar.
Service is cool, Tema is the server, they are polite and super knowledgable about the menu. The sushi chef is a sweet and kind aunty, she's also the owner. Go in there chill, with a kind heart and match your expectations with the prices. This isn't Uchi and they don't pretend to have that vibe or quality of fish. Maki Tori is honest and confident with their offerings- for $12 you get a good salmon roll with great service in a clean place on a Tuesday night after work. Ideal for bros night, weekday date night, solo sad night and everything in between.

This is my favorite food spot in all of Austin. I love nothing more than a family-owned business. A place where the staff remember your name and feels at home. If you're in north Austin, maybe heading to Austin FC or leaving the Domain, don't hesitate to come for “Angey Hour”. Some of the best deals in town.

Best ayce sushi as far as quality goes that I’ve had in Austin - I’d say a step above the rest as far as fish quality and freshness, and diversity of options. The rolls weren’t just different permutations of imitation crab with too much sweet sauce. My new go-to for all you can eat sushi

Tried this place multiple times in hopes that the first day was just an off day. The food is not of good quality and honestly the food tends to have a sour taste as if it is no longer good. Also the texture of the mochi was completely off the ice cream was soupy and the mochi itself was falling apart.

Updating my review, as my kids wanted to eat here again, so I have it another try.

Gotta say, not much has changed... The food was very tasty, I had miso soup and veggie tempura this time.

But once again, the wait time was so long, and the staff was not real attentive, even though the place was almost empty.

I came here on Fri for my birthday and got a Hawaii roll and a sushi bento box. I am now on day 4 of food poisoning. I've been eating sushi since I was a kid and this is the first time in my life I've ever gotten sick from it. My family members I came with complained also as they used to frequent this restaurant often, but hadn't been in a while and they stated from the moment they got their drinks they were worried cause the quality was different. Thankfully I'm the only one who eats raw fish so no one else is sick 😭. Definitely ruined my birthday.

Def should not be an all you can eat sushi! Def not authentic sushi! Literally used minute rice.
Servers are making the food without gloves! No authentic Japanese chef in site! Didn't provide napkins had to get up my self! Kept asking for water refills! Save yourself time energy and money and go to a real Japanese sushi!

Food was not good. Dry, oily, the chicken katsu tasted like old oil. The fish tasted like freezer burn, the egg roll was crispy on the outside and gooey wet old tasting and gross. The food was slow to come out. We were there for about an hour and all we got was a bento box and a roll. Never coming back and wouldnt recommend. The staff was nice and she gave us a discount on the bento box because we didn’t eat any of the meal part of it.

We came here as a family for their all you can eat sushi. We were surprised and pleased by the wide variety of food that was included under the all you can eat menu. We loved the wide variety of sushi we could order and found some favorites for next time. We left feeling full, happy, and satisfied. Would recommend to others and will return again.

I love Maki Toki! The team there is genuinely kind, and the service is fast. Tima is always friendly to me when I come in, even when I get a late evening to-go order.

Not the usual Japanese restaurant you go to. Pretty unusual combinations of makis of all kinds. The lack of illustrations on the menu makes it harder to choose.

Overall it was good and funnily makis come in 8 pieces units instead of the usual 6. Service is good and attentive. Place was quiet and only few people inside. You can watch the news on two TVs that have subtitles.

This place is quite ok - once you’ve analysed it’s menu ;-)

We showed up 15 minutes before closing time on a Thursday knowing that they could turn us around but also we didn't want to be "those guys" but they welcomed us with open arms and Miss Tima and her mother and father were absolutely amazing and the food, sheesh, every single thing we ordered was amazing, especially the peppered tuna. My favorite meal is the chicken yakitori bento box and I’ve recently come to love the blueberry margarita! I’m really not sure what all the hype is about? This was what I’d call strip center sushi. It’s fine, it’s boring, it’s accommodating to all palates and inoffensive. We’d always wanted to eat sushi from a boat and we achieved that goal, for a much steeper price than Sushi Junai’s AYCE (same quality imo). Service was ok, I was shocked to find out our server wasn’t a new hire and in fact is mentioned by name in lots of these reviews. They brought the wrong beer, and when pressed revealed that that particular beer was out of stock. When bringing sushi to the table that was chef’s/server’s choice, I had to ask for an explanation of the rolls. The Love Boat menu item we got didn’t come with dessert as stated. It’s a cute neighborhood spot but I can get the same quality sushi and service at Sushi Junai.

The food here was very good! I came during Angry Hour and thought the prices were great deal. Took my son there here tonight, since he received "student of the month" at his elementary school.

We halved a Chicken Katsu bento box, Yummy hand roll, and shrimp tempura. All exactly $30 before tip. Not bad. We're both full.

He said this place beat his favorite 'Golden Corral'. That's a bold statement for a 11 year old.

My husband and I have been coming here since before we were married, and it has never lost its luster. Tima has been our server the last couple of years, and she always has a great attitude and hustle. As things evolve, you expect change. But Maki Toki has been a time capsule of positivity that I hope to be able to maintain. Ten years of patronizing, and not one disappointment! First off I love this place because it’s not a franchise. It’s owned by a family who’s a part of the North Austin community! If you dine in you might be lucky enough to be served by Tima who always works hard to keep everyone satisfied. You can’t go wrong with a Chicken Katsu Bento box. it’s plenty of food for a great price. Tiger Roll, Austin Roll, 420 Roll, they’re all tasty! It’s a great spot for some drinks and they occasionally throw on ppv sporting events on their tv’s. It’s 5 minutes from the Domain if you’re ever in the area!

The customer service here is always on top of it! My favorite waitress, Tima always provides me and all her other customers with the best recommendations especially since I’m specifically very picky with what sushi I get in general so it’s perfect! Owners were the sweetest people (make sure to tip the chef she does amazing!) but the prize goes to their Tami roll, it was spicy and very refreshing! The other rolls were just as great! I would recommend to all sushi lovers for sure!

Unique and kind staff that transformed throughout the years and I can proudly say that the kind server they have now it’s probably the best one yet. The sushi rolls were terrific. I arrived with my spouse to watch a fight night event in which they host, and our waitress, Tima was very attentive and was always around to ask us if we needed anything beyond the fact that there was such an enormous crowd. Good team work and good music.

I ended up getting spicy tuna, and absolutely loved it. If you’re looking for restaurant/food place that introduces you to Sushi, Maki Toki is the place to be!! While the food was amazing, I was most impressed with the service. I had the pleasure of having a waitress named Tima. Tima was quick, efficient, and most importantly very friendly. As I was new to the restaurant, Tima provided me a detailed run-down of the menu, including her own personal favorites. I have never met a waitress with such an infectious smile and vibrant energy. I’m so thankful to have had Tima as my server, and I would come back solely to see her!! All in all, the food and service was a 10/10!! My date and I came a couple weeks ago and Tima was the best server. This place was suggested to us by some friends and she was so great and the food was amazing. Also got this really good grape and Prosecco drink she suggested and it was SOOO good!!!

Maki Toki was the first restaurant I tried sushi at and I will never need to try anywhere else. My mind was blown beyond expectations with the selection of sushi available, the amazing customer service, and the high quality sushi that is served. This is one of the best family owned restaurants in the Austin area and not just when it comes to sushi. Our server Tima has provided excellent and thorough service for us time and time again. My favorite aspect of Maki Toki is how beautifully the food is presented on every occasion AND they have the best tasting/strongest margaritas you can find.

The sushi is very rice-heavy. The tempura doesn't come with proper tempura sauce. The fried rice had no flavor and smelled burnt (not in a good way). There is a $3? surcharge for paying with a credit card. I came during angry hour and I indeed left angry. Will never return.

I liked the place some great cocktails. I went with a big group and I am hoping that is the reason for sucha long wait for our food and mistaken orders. For the cocktails alone I will go back.

Good Japanese food... Has a very homely vibe to it...
Very friendly service all around..
Loved the bar sitting arrangement...

Ordered a combination fried rice, vegetable tempura, and miso soup.

Went there with a couple of buddies...
And we thoroughly enjoyed the experience..

Will definitely consider going there again...

Maki Toki is my favorite, hidden gem! I go here when I want more of a lowkey vibe without sacrificing quality. I’ve been several times over the last 4 or 5 years and I have been consistently impressed. It’s never super busy, the staff is super chill and friendly, and the prices are hard to beat!

You really can’t go wrong with the sushi rolls, I recommend you plan on trying all of them eventually!

This is coming from a previous sushi waitress from a different place but not affiliated.
The bad
The waitress didn't know what I meant when I asked for sake nigiri ( salmon) to be fair I went in my pj's during my busy work season as I was that busy but a girl gotta have that sushi this might have taken her off guard.
The hand rolls are a firm reminder of when my old boss was learning to make hand rolls
The seaweed ( nori) was stale it tasted old.
The good
That fish is so fresh you will keep coming back no matter the bad.
Prices are average, angry hour is cute
The bathrooms are very clean.
You are not even gonna believe how good the yellow tail is I'm saying worth it. Seriously order away they are good the fish is perfection.
The side notes I still love this place as a quick sushi fix be aware the root beer is diet. Atmosphere couldn't be better . Staff is super friendly and can pick up on the social cues of when you need something.

came here for a birthday (not mine). was originally just going to get the edamame & side of rice (i don’t like sushi & am gluten free) but the super sweet blonde waitress was able to kind of create me a meal (stirred tofu & broccoli), very delicious! she definitely cared about whether or not we were having a good time. the other people had the sushi and loved it too. would definitely come back again!!

This place is so good! I’m not a very descriptive person, but WOW these rolls are unique and amazingly scrumptious. Such a wonderful and friendly place. My new go to spot in Austin, Texas! My favorite roll is the Chris roll which was named originally after a guy loyal customer named Chris. Isn’t that amazing? So cool!!!

Went in for a pickup order and owner/employee was extremely rude and refused to give me my order after ordering using the app. Customer service is very important to me and this place fails. I am sure there was a decent reason why they couldn't give me my order but they couldn't be nice about it; they shouted at me saying "NO". I wish I could speak for the food here but I am almost glad I can't because usually customer service and food quality go hand-in-hand.

Not an expensive place, and not the fanciest sushi. I would highly suggest going earlier for lunch, as by dinner time, the fish mostly tasted mushy and wilted. Very rice-heavy rolls as well. The calamari was the daily special for free, but otherwise it would have been pretty expensive for what you get. I put it at grocery store sushi level in terms of quality and price. The waitress was nice as well, but she did for some reason give me back my bill with a higher final price than I saw on my check before. Didn’t say if it was an auto-tip or anything either. Overall, good vibe and affordable spot, but I was hoping for better quality and a bit more honest pricing…

I've ordered from here and have also dined in a couple of times, and their bento boxes are my favorite!!!! LOVE the Beef Yakitori bento box, Chicken Katsu bento, and the miso soup! Everything is sooo filling and flavorful!!!
The service is top-notch!!!! Everyone is so friendly! I need to try everything on their menu!!!

I absolutely loved this place!!! I happened upon them doing a doordash pickup and looked at the menu while waiting. I went back the next day for myself and the sushi was so good! The people are so friendly I 10 out of 10 recommend this place for the food, the atmosphere, and the customer service.

Order delivery from this place for the first time and I’m not impressed.
Philadelphia rolls tasted weird. Fish wasn’t fresh.
Calamari tested weird as well.
420 roll where really good.

The bento box meals are amazing! Cheap for the perfect amount of food so you're not over stuffed but not hungry either. The quality was amazing. The shrimp I received was cooked perfectly and sweet as well. Will definitely be going back again!

This is one of the hidden gems of North Austin. It’s so classy and tucked away that if you don’t know it is there you have to try. Sushi is so fresh, and colorful - try the Rainbow roll! My favorite rolls are the Austin and 420 which is full of deep savory goodness in each bite. The 9.1.1 has a great kick. Hey they even have a steak roll! Thanks to the staff for great ambience and service. Try for lunch or dinner, reasonably priced. Thanks for serving our neighborhood.

Went here for Valentine’s Day and was blown away by the service and the food! Staff was so friendly and the sushi was delicious. They decorated so cute for valentines and even gave us free cheesecake! We’ll definitely be back 💕

Staff was kind, and I hope they are able to make a success from this restaurant, but I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed with the food. I ordered the Pork Katsu bento box. The rice was sort of cold. The sushi rolls were not rolled very well. The tempura sweet potato was good. I liked that, but the dipping sauce was like a spicy thousand island. First sushi restaurant that I have been to where they didn't give a soy sauce tray with ginger. Even the grocery store will give you that. I wanted to like the food, but it was not very good. $17 is a lot for a really subpar lunch. I would not recommend this place.
