Uchi, "house" in Japanese, is founded by James Beard Award-winning Chef Tyson Cole. A delicate balance of elevated food and impeccable service, Uchi offers non-traditional Japanese cuisine with signature tastings, sushi, and seasonal omakase.
We knew about Uchi because it's supposed to be the best restaurant in Austin. A special occasion came up, so we visited on a Saturday night. I am pleased to report it blew us away. It's rare to have an eating experience unlike any you've had before. The dishes were perfectly prepared - particularly the sauces. What stood out most to me were the flavors: exquisitely crafted and balanced. I'm not a big raw fish fan, but I enjoyed everything I ate. The service was also quite good. We mentioned our special occasion and the server brought us a really good trout dish on the house. Complimentary valet parking was nice too. Definitely will be going back and couldn't be happier with our experience!

I never be to this place before but I heard it was a Michelin star restaurant. I feel that if a restaurant is a Michelin star then it is going to be expensive. I was ready with the understanding of it costing more than I would usually pay. As for the atmosphere it had a dark theme to it with low light. It was not easy to read the menu being darkish. When got there at 4pm with a reservation and I that's when they open for dinner. At first it was not busy but after an hour it got nuts. It was way too noisy so for me it ruined the mood. As for the food it was very good. I got all the happy hour rolls and there were only two I was not impressed with. I do not remember what they were called but it was not a big deal. My wife went a bit crazy by getting alcoholic drinks but I did not mind because we do not eat out a lot. Our bill came up to $189.00 which we would never spend on one sitting but this time it was ok. All in a very good experience and it was a delight to try.

Exceptional!
Best meal in Austin — best meal ever!
If it were possible to give MORE stars, then Uchi would receive way more than the available five here. Every single moment and every bite was decadent.
Highlights: hot rock; uni from Santa Barbara and Hokkaido; pork belly; snow crab.
My partner very much enjoyed the brussels sprouts. I don’t usually order dessert but we got the banana cake and honey toast. I could not pick which one was better.
The service was on point. Superbly kind and considerate with the perfect balance of communication.
I recommend making a reservation in advance, although, it did not seem as though parties waited very long for a table. Also, complimentary valet! We got one of the best tables in the place!
We shall return!

We recently visited Uchi for our anniversary dinner and were truly transformed by the culinary experience.
- I’ll admit, Japanese cuisine isn’t typically my go-to as I’m more used to the bold flavors of Indian food. But this place completely won me over! The dishes were fresh, beautifully presented, and packed with subtle yet amazing flavors.
The Karage chicken was a standout—perfectly balanced and melt-in-your-mouth good. The sushi rolls& tempura were light yet flavorful, and the attention to detail in every dish was impressive.
Even as someone new to Japanese flavors, I am left completely satisfied and eager to return. Highly recommend, whether you’re a fan of Japanese food or just looking to try something new!

Always a complete pleasure eating here. Service and atmosphere are as expected. The food never disappoints. My cold sake was creamy and refreshing. The wagyu carpacio is delicious!! I tried all three of the market selection and all 3 were amazing. The grilled fish appetizer is stupid good, with perfect texture and flavor. The scallop bites are always super fresh and bright. The tuna hand roll bursts with flavor. The Cesar hand roll is so underrated, so delicious. I'll enjoy many more happy hours here

Oh my! Austin weekend visitor here! I will repeat this place no doubt! Yes, on the pricey side, nice casual attire, party of 3, and planned in advance not to buy alcoholic drinks. We ended up with 2 from the happy hour. The HH MENU is plentiful! Food is incredibly fresh, experience very Japanese, although with such creative twists to each item! AUSTINEERS would say “with an Austin fusion”.
Cheers to Stephanie, our server, who was so knowledgeable, happy, bubbly and patient! Thanks Arvind for his accurate “suggestions”!

I’m not from Austin and almost everyone I asked for restaurant recommendations suggested this place. I wasn’t really sure what to expect so I went for happy hour to catch the vibe. Ended up ordering maybe 15 dishes. Incredible quality. Don’t think I’ve had sashimi this good anywhere but costal towns.
Our server Yumi was an absolute angel. Impeccable menu knowledge. Gave us great recommendations. Give this girl a raise. She truly made our experience.
Absolutely suggest the wagyu carpaccio and all the nigiri and sashimi we had SLAPPPEDDD.
The unfiltered sake was so delicate and beautiful. Bushido sake is dangerously crushable.

I have been to Uchi soooo many times. I absolutely love this place Tyson Cole and his team nail every single dish. Their flavor combinations are always on point. Portions use to be bigger but with fish being so expensive and overfishing of the sea I guess it’s just inevitable. But still recommend this place if on a budget go during hh!! Its fantastic and will save you some $$! Highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar its first come first serve unless you have a reservation. Sit at sushi bar and let them serve you Omakase style its the best!! Love uchi!!!
My love for Uchi has now evaporated!
We came in as a walk-in… not sure how this should be any different than having a reservation. But the rushing of food orders make me feel like I was a goose being stuffed with food. There was no break no relieve from food our dishes were stacked upon each-other. Ive never felt so rushed, so upset, so full because there was no pause. I use to love this restaurant but now, I’m upset furious, just plane why the hell did I choose this restaurant only to be hurried the fu$& out!!! They have lost there simple courtesy with hot towel in the beginning to a nice fine dining dinner. I get that they are looking for a more diverse crowd but tone down the prices if that is what you are doing. Shame on you Tyson GO BACK TO YOUR ROOTS!!!! I will not be returning. So rushed so upset. This was an austin must go…. Now, just a austin tourist spot with money to splurge. I am so disappointed and just clearly upset!
Im glad you are doing so well ,but this was an awful experience for someone who has been dining with you since you used to serve behind the sushi counter. Also there was nothing new or anything to talk about
My favorite dishes had some problems too gritty of a sauce or the fine finesse wasn’t there… for the amount of money , I just have no words. Im fuc$$$$.upset. This is not how you run things or maybe how you RUIN things. Just really really sad overall. Plus side the staff are excellent maybe we should have said slow it down but thought the pile of plates would have said something in itself. This may be a harsh review but I used to love this place. Sad sad sad day for austin. :(

This place far exceeded our expectations. We had been to the sister Uchiko and were not that impressed. Uchi didn’t have a single item on the menu that we didn’t enjoy. Sleeper pick is grilled romaine. Try it and see. We will 100% return.

This has to be the best restaurant in Austin. I've been going to this place for years and it always is such an outstanding experience. This time my wife and I ordered the omakase; ten courses picked by the chef. Every dish was incredible, and they even threw in some extras. Very reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food. Total was about $250 and worth every penny.

Would take too long to detail our experience tonight. Tl;DR is, Forgotten about when we checked in for reservation (walked up after 25 mins waiting to hear from the hostess, "thanks for checking we forgot about you".) Food took 30-45 mins to come after ordering (not food you cook, by the way). Got to Uchi at 7:00, seated at 7:45 (7:15 reservation), first dish came out at 8:30. Worst $300 I've spent in Austin.

One of my top Austin favorites! Be sure and make a reservation for the happy hour that begins at 4. Bring cash to tip the parking lot attendant (optional). The quality of fish is 5star. Uchi Austin is a culinary gem that perfectly balances sophistication and warmth. The staff’s attentiveness and the beautifully curated menu elevate the dining experience, offering innovative Japanese dishes crafted with the finest ingredients and impeccable technique.
The $16 snow crab sushi was unforgettable, despite its size—barely a third of my palm. Its flavor was extraordinary, with the softest, buttery taste that surpassed even the luxurious richness of wagyu beef. While it’s absolutely worth trying once for its unique indulgence, the price-to-portion ratio makes it less appealing for a repeat.
Uchi Austin excels in creating an intimate yet indulgent dining experience, making it perfect for special occasions or a well-deserved treat.

Probably my favorite restaurant in the city. Always enjoy taking out-of-towners here. The food is excellent and creative, and the staff is always great.
Last week they gave me and my cousin who was visiting a complementary dish after I had commented on it from a previous visit. The hospitality is always incredible.

The most disorganized joke of a restaurant I have been to. 8:15 reservation on a Wednesday evening. “Grab a drink and we will seat you soon.” 45 minutes later…nothing, while watching other people pass us that showed up after us. We have dined at Uchiko and spent hundreds of dollars on a dinner. Joke of a place. Don’t waste your time. There are better places in Austin for sushi. Will never dine at any Uchi family restraunt again.

Small space, with good ambiance. Music was not too loud... didn't have to yell to communicate with people at my table.
Service is good, with a dedicated server who takes your orders and random servers who clear your empty plates regularly.
Food is fantastic! Best sushi in Austin. I've come back because of the food. Unique flavoring and sauces that elevate the sushi to another level. Try the Sake tom kha.

Short and brief.
Omakase came out in a timely manner but the tako vinaigrette was overly salty, wife couldn't eat it. The beef in shrooms with a reduction sauce was overly salty as well. Chef needs to keep tasting things before it comes out.
Had to ask my waitress twice for my uni and the third time...I just cancelled it.
Unorganized and insufficient skill to be charging these prices.

Staff were very friendly, and you basically meet everyone that works during your reservation, as different people bring out each dish you order. Personally, I don't like that model of serving dishes, just feels like over rehersed strangers coming to your table over and over again.....
More importantly, however, is that the sushi here is best described as 'fusion' at best. I love sushi because it's clean and natural. The presentations at Uchi Austin are over designed, with the sushi flavors over powered by a range of flavors (great flavors), but entirely wipes away the taste of sushi. Less art and more sushi would be better.
Also, maybe there are not many Japanese people in Austin, but I find it a bit strange to visit a sushi restaurant for 3 hours, and not see a single East Asian member of staff. 🤔🤔
2 adults, chef sampler, 2 orders of uni, 5 beers and 2 cocktails approximately $520.00 before tip

At Uchi in Austin, I was not simply served a meal—I was granted an audience with culinary divinity itself. Every dish that graced my table was a carefully crafted work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that played upon my palate with the grace and intensity of a world-class orchestra. It was nothing short of an edible epiphany.
The sushi? Impeccable. Each piece was a love letter to the ocean—so fresh, so delicate, it felt like it had leaped from the sea onto my plate moments before. The fish, sliced with surgeon-like precision, practically dissolved on my tongue, leaving behind a lingering whisper of its essence, as if teasing me to take another bite, to lose myself even further in its depth. Every roll was perfectly balanced, with rice so tender it could have been woven from silk, each bite building on the last in a crescendo of flavor.
And let’s talk about the hot dishes, particularly the karaage chicken. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection—it was as if the chef had captured the very essence of comfort and wrapped it in a golden, crunchy exterior. My taste buds danced with joy, while my mind marveled at the level of precision in every detail.
The ambiance at Uchi only added to the experience. Minimalist yet warm, it felt like I was dining in an art gallery—one where the masterpieces are served on plates. The gentle hum of conversation and the low lighting created an atmosphere that was both intimate and vibrant, making the meal not just a feast for the stomach, but for the soul.
Dining at Uchi was more than a meal—it was a revelation. If there is a heaven for food lovers, Uchi is surely its earthly manifestation. Prepare yourself for the culinary experience of a lifetime. You won’t just be eating; you’ll be ascending.

My personal favorite dishes are the walu walu, kinoko, gyutaro, shima aji crudo, bluefin chutoro, zero sen, to name a few. I don't like this restaurant. I wanted to eat here alone, and so the bar seating was the only option. They were rude because it was my first time at that location. There is no space at the bar seating area. You are practically elbow to elbow with strangers. If one of them is a messy eater or just ornery, you'll be uncomfortable the whole time. I only wanted rolls, but I felt pressured to order nigiri at the bar because there was someone preparing food right in front of me who I had to order through. One roll was good, the other was not.I gave a 25% tip, but I guess because of my skin color, the waitstaff thought I wouldn't tip enough. They grabbed the book before I could stand up to leave (didn't do that with either the solo diner or couple on either side of me). The male busser who grabbed the book ran over to my waistress (Stephanie) to giggle about the tip, when they both look at it with much disappointment for their bullying and realized that I, regrettably, gave my waitress 25% tip and wrote 'thank you' on it. Despite being so eager to get the tip, they never bothered to say thank you back. Just rude, uncomfortable, bland, and unwelcoming experience at Uchi all around. I do not recommend. I would rather make sushi at home. Not to mention, my stomach did not feel well after eating there. It looks like fish at the bar used to make nigiri (and possibly the rolls from the kitchen) is left out and not cooled to the right temperature. A few times I saw them handling raw fish that was starting to cure from being exposed to air constantly. That can't be a good way to handle and store raw fish. Awful experience. I'd give 0 out of 10 if I could.

Some things get better with time (or at least stay the same) and others wilt like week-old flowers. Unfortunately, Uchi is a pale shadow of its former self. This used to be our absolute favorite sushi restaurant, and while it was always a pricey meal, at least the quality and portions were balanced. You expected to spend 100/person, but it was great food and a treat.
Instead, this was the most underwhelming meal my wife and I have ever had. The portions are now minuscule and the quality has dropped, making it a lose-lose.
The "highly-recommended" flounder appetizer was a $20+ plate delivered with see-through thin sushi and maybe an ounce total of food. The nigiri was very thin, tiny pieces that barely covered the top of the rice, and strangely seared. The hamachi and mackerel both tasted overly fishy instead of clean and fresh. The rolls that we had hoped would at least fill us up or tiny and included only five slices each. The miso soup is served in a small ramekin with just a few ounces in it (mushrooms are an upcharge, for 6-7 pieces of mushroom).
For a $250+ meal we got about 7-800 calories each. Very disappointing, there is no way I would ever recommend this place again.

Food is great as always (our 4th time). However, the service was OK - not as special as previous visits. Specifically, our celebration preferences noted on the reservation were not mentioned at all (previous visits they noted anniversaries with a drink and well wishes - nothing this time), did not get proactive recommendations, and were made to feel rushed at times. One of my favorite restaurants and I expect more and hope the consistency is not slipping.

Always a fantastic experience. I moved from Seattle and whenever I suggest sushi in Austin my friends from out of town scoff. However I put Uchi up there with some of my favorite Japanese restaurants.
Always tons of unique options and seems to make updates to the menu fairly regularly.

Some tips for eating here:
If you’re on a budget, eat a snack before you come here.
If you’re splurging, don’t order everything at once, order 2 or 3 dishes at a time and see if you’re still hungry. Because the food is so interesting and savorable, you’ll eat slower you might end up feeling full long before you thought. We had like 3 sushi rolls come out AFTER we couldn’t eat another bite and regretted it 😅

Food was excellent. Restaurant was way too crowded and loud. We had headaches from the noise. If you are sensitive to loud spaces, you likely won't enjoy sitting inside.

Went recently on a Friday evening and it was packed! Food was definitely great quality, our favorite was the hama chili, which was a little different than our own local sushi place; they made the hama chili with orange instead of apple, which was a nice surprise, the flavors worked wonderful together. I can't remember all of the different toyosu that we tried, I believe the amberjack and black bream were a couple of our favorites. As for the downside - I generally really like bluefin tuna, but not a fan of onions, so the onions it came with was a bit overpowering for me; another downer was the scallop nigiri, it was way too fishy for me, but some might enjoy the taste. We sat at the sushi bar, was very loud and almost couldn't hear what our server was explaining to us, but overall good experience and fish quality was excellent. Would recommend you try it at least once.

15/10, if you're considering an omakase experience I absolutely recommend Uchi! Incredibly balanced dishes that are modern and fun. This is probably one the best omakase experiences I have had, its pretty up there with the experiences in Japan. Every ingredient is paired in a way to compliment the fish itself. In every dish the protein is the star. The service was great and the atmosphere is fun and inviting. I loved the moody setting and the mumble of happy guests. There are a few omakase options, we went with chef selection. Our server offered to sub dishes if necessary so I asked her to give me the most unique dishes on the menu and she absolutely delivered! My top dishes included the uni with a quail egg shot, the pork belly, and the tapioca dessert. The sake tom kha was a table favorite along with the banana cake. I will 1000% visit Uchi again.

Pretentious and expensive sushi place. Food is par and menu is not friendly at all. Been there twice wont be a third time

Hands down the best sushi I've had in Austin. Definitely one of the best finer dining meals I've had in Austin as well. I recommend reserving a table in advance, and sampling the menu as much as possible. The wagyu beef carpaccio was unreal.

We dine at Uchis at least once or twice a month. We always take home leftovers to be considerate and not be wasteful. Last night we were served by a waitress who rolled her eyes when I asked her to box one piece of Sakana Tempura. She kept repeating if I wanted to box "one piece of tempura?". It was quite rude and inappropriate. Everyone at the table was surprised by her attitude, definitely an unfortunate experience.

I may be spoiled as I have dined in many Japanese resaturants in Japan and around the world. Uchu is overated. Portions less not even petite, relatively tasteless, and expensive, and the atmosphere was unpleasantly loud. It was however during HH so ok maybe ... Note, had to ask for ginger, wasabe and soy sauce, and our server was pushy and brusk. I cannot recommend.

Chef Shannon and Chase were excellent. Great wine selection. I got the grilled Romain (ELITE), sake tom kha (ELITE), and yellow tail hand roll (VERY GOOD). Wish I would have just done the 8 course happy hour but I’ll save that for next time. 10/10

Wonderful anniversary evening. We were treated like royalty. We did the 10 course chef's tasting menu and highly recommend it. Service was impeccable with our waitress Cass just one of the team of service staff that was working to make for a perfect evening.
Food, and presentation was perfect. Each course came with a detailed description which we kept track of on our paper menu "score card".
Very nice wine list. Highly recommend.

The sushi bar staff was a very sad display of staff that hates their job. You can see it very much on their faces. I never saw a smile or any joy. I am very saddened as to what this beautiful restaurant has become. It was a place of fun exciting sushi that was an Austin hub but its fire has gone out.

I called and tried ordering a pint of fried milk ice cream to go 35 mins before closing. The hostess said if there’s no times available on their website, they aren’t taking orders even if I showed up in person. She refused to take my order for something that you just have to stick in a bag. I’ve only been to the locations in other states, but with this poor experience I’m not going back to those either.

Uchi is my favorite restaurant in Austin. The dishes are handcrafted to perfection. My husband and I always do the omakase and are never disappointed. My favorite is their tuna and his is the waygu beef. It’s pricey but worth the experience. To save some money, go at happy hour.

totally deserves a michelin star! we booked for dinner and blew our expectations. a definite visit. having gone to nobu malibu, this was much better. every single dish/sushi/nigiri was amazing. the experience was enhanced by the staff explaining how to best enjoy each dish, ensuring we got the most out of every bite. it had outdoor, indoor and bar seating. also had a separate vegetarian menu which was nice. beef wellington was good as well. atmosphere was dim, candle light vibe. would be a good birthday dinner, date night spot.

Intimate setting, quality food curated from some of the best chefs in the city. If you are looking for a spot that you can spend some money at for a special occasion…This is the spot! 5 Stars. By far the closest thing to a “Michelin Star-Esque” experience you can get in Austin, Texas. Although there isn’t a Michelin Guide in Austin. But if there was, this place would be apart of it without a doubt. I would Recommend doing the Tasting menu, you get a little bit of everything. If you are feeling more outlandish, order some stuff a la carte on top of the tasting menu!

I’ve been in the food industry for 8 years and have been to a lot of places. I’ve eaten here twice and I must say it is the best dining experience I have ever had across the board. Every bite was a memorable experience of its own and of the highest quality. The gyotoro and the tuna otoro were two of the most explosive bites I have ever had and was worth every penny.

Definitely a must, I had a spectacular time dinning here. I absolutely wanna thank Rose , who crafted her own Omakase experience for me 💛. Without a doubt she is a true asset for Uchi and can truly elevate a customers experience with her knowledge and way to foresee a client's desires. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Words cannot describe how amazing of a night me and a friend had at Uchi tonight. First, I must drop some names. Joe, you were a perfect waiter, the best I have ever had. You cared about us and made sure what we were served was exactly what we wanted, from flavor to texture to dietary restrictions. Sarah, you made us smile so much. Everytime you brought us a dish, it was almost impossible not to have a short conversation with you about something. You made us feel like family. And lastly, Savanna... Uchi means house in Japanese and the way you ran the restaurant made us feel like home. You are truly a spectacular manager and know what you are doing. These three individuals made our night special to the truest of its meaning.
Now, the food. From the rice to the fish to the vegetables, everything was perfect. The rice was not too tightly packed. The fish was fresh, high quality, and cut perfectly. And the vegetables... Oh. My. God. Our favorite dish all night might have been the brussel sprouts. There might have only been one dish I wasn't head over heels in love with, but it still was amazing! I will be dreaming of these dishes for a while.
If you can visit Uchi, please go. It is truly an experience not just of flavor, but of hospitality and atmosphere. The only issue I had was it was slightly loud, but it really wasn't too too bad.
I hope I can come in again soon. I will miss it dearly.

love love love!!!! Recently had an amazing experience . The food was incredible, with each dish beautifully presented and packed with flavor. I especially loved the Machi Cure, with its crispy yuca and smoked yellowtail, and the Hama Chili, which had the perfect blend of spicy and tangy. The nigiri was super fresh, the unfiltered sake is fabulous—it was smooth and paired perfectly with the dishes. We also took advantage of their happy hour, which offered some really great deals. The vibe at Uchi is lively yet cozy, a perfect spot for a fun night out. Maybe not the best for super intimate setting as it is pretty loud inside. The quality and experience is totally worth it for the price point

The food is really delicious, and we also had great service. The ambiance is authentic and cozy, making it a perfect spot for a nice dining experience. Additionally, we ordered a pint of ice cream to go, and oh my god, this ice cream is absolutely amazing. Highly recommend visiting!

My husband brought me to Uchi to celebrate my birthday and it was even better than I had imagined it would be. We had the happy hour omakase along with the shishito peppers and other dishes we added. Everything was so delicious and the pistachio puff pastry was an amazing end. We each had a refreshing adult beverage. I can't wait to return and try their other locations...Uchiko, Dallas Houston and Denver. Bonus: loved the complimentary valet.

The food reviews here are all largely accurate: great omakase and drink pairings, pleasant waitstaff, etc. My only issue was how loud it was. It's one of the most popular high-quality restaurants in Austin, so it's always packed to the brim. Maybe we just went on a particularly well-attended night, but we could hardly hear each other.
