I am beyond overdue for an updated review, but here we go!

In the past three years, I think I’ve visited Tatsumi over 80 times (both dine-in and takeout). It’s hands-down my favorite restaurant in Austin and even rivals most sushi spots I grew up with in the Bay Area. Chef Elvin, Tiffany, and the entire Tatsumi team are nothing short of amazing—they truly feel like family to me. Their dedication to creating an exceptional dining experience, serving top-tier sushi, and sharing meaningful conversations and memories is unmatched and I'm so lucky to know them.

No matter the occasion—whether I’m celebrating, having a rough day, or just craving a fantastic meal—I know Tatsumi will always make me happy. I’ve introduced countless friends and family to this gem, and it’s my go-to spot for hosting out-of-town visitors. Without fail, everyone I bring here raves about it, often calling it one of the best meals they’ve had in Austin.

I’ve explored most of the menu by now, and my list of favorites keeps growing—it’s a true testament to the quality and creativity that Tatsumi delivers every time.

Lydia's Favorite's :)

Appetizers:
- Oysters
- Street corn ribs
- Rock shrimp tempura
- Kakuni Pork Belly Bao
- Chili Hamachi
- Negi toro toast

Mains:
- Hamachi kama
- Char siu pork fried rice
- a5 Wagyu ribeye (honestly my favorite steak in town)

Rolls:
- Tatsu Special
- A5 miyazaki
- Jennet's Special
- Negi toro roll (Delicious as a hand roll too)

Nigiri:
- Umimasu
- salmon belly
- otoro
- Seabream w/ kelp butter
- scallop
- hamachi

If I were to narrow this down to what I can realistically eat with my partner during a meal, this would be it: Oysters, hamachi kama, a5 Miyazaki roll, negi toro hand rolls, and an order each of all the nigiri above. The hamachi kama melts in your mouth, is so tender, and I am also in love with the sauce that comes with it.

I would highly recommend doing an omakase with Chef Elvin. I promise, you'll be blown away at the creativity and delicious bites.

Huge thank you to the Tatsumi team, yall know I'm obsessed!

If you’re searching for the best sushi in Austin, look no further than Tatsumi. As someone who has eaten at all the big-name spots in the city, I can confidently say that Tatsumi outshines them all. Every visit has been a 10/10 experience—yes, every single time!

From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm hospitality that sets the tone for an exceptional dining experience. The fish is always incredibly fresh, and the craftsmanship behind every roll and piece of sashimi is unmatched. Whether you’re indulging in their perfectly balanced specialty rolls or savoring the simplicity of their nigiri, Tatsumi consistently delivers perfection.

What truly sets Tatsumi apart is their attention to detail. The presentation is stunning, the flavors are meticulously layered, and the quality is second to none. Their dedication to excellence is evident in every bite.

For anyone who loves sushi—or even for someone trying it for the first time—Tatsumi is an absolute must-visit. Trust me, you won’t find better sushi anywhere else in Austin. This place is a gem, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Sushi Experience №36

One of the best sushi restaurants in Austin! My friends in SoCal think I'm crazy when I tell them how great some of the sushi restaurants are here in Austin but a few of them are very legit and can rival and sushi restaurant in the country. And Tatsumi is one of those.

It's in a very unassuming area of town that you could easily pass by. In fact, we were going off the car GPS and ended up driving a complete circle around the place before we found it. But you can see it from the main road if you know where to look. We came in on a Friday with no reservations and we were able to get a table, but it does look like it fills up quickly. We were only two so best to make reservations if your party is bigger.

The inside is quite beautiful and the staff were very nice. Again, not having a reservation, this was not a problem for them and they immediately seated us and soon after, someone took a drink order from us. Since we had never been here before, and to make a fair comparison, we ordered some of our usual favorites: Seaweed Salad, Nigiri (Hamachi and Toro - two pieces per order). For rolls, we had the Mountain roll and a Gary's roll.

For starters, they brought out the seaweed salad with the nigiri. I would have expected the salad first before bringing out any of the food items ordered. The nigiri was epic! The fish was so fresh, it practically melts in your mouth. Very generous portions. For the Mountain and Gary's roll, I took the recommendation of the server and they were both fantastic. Leads me to believe the other rolls are equally fantastic.

Amazing restaurant. It would be nice if they brought out the items separately. There is no reason to bring the salad out with the sushi. Starters and salads should be brought out first. Seaweed salad is such as basic dish and yet this wasn't very good. Too soggy and they use a slightly different dressing. And we wanted a Philly roll but they do not carry cream cheese. I'm well aware that cream cheese is unheard of at a sushi restaurant in Japan. But also something you won't find at a sushi restaurant in Japan is a California roll and they have two varieties of California rolls here. You can get a Philly roll at the top sushi restaurants in the U.S. Too bad they choose to not serve them.

Bottom line, this is without a doubt one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin and probably all of Texas. Just make sure to ask them not to bring all the food at once.

We were not able to dine here because we came on a saturday night at 630 and she told us the wait would be 45min, totally fine. However, we ended up waiting over an hour and so many other parties on the list were able to go in before us. We kept asking after the 45min how much longer it would be and she kept saying 10-15min eventually we left after waiting for 1.5hrs because it seemed like the woman was just bringing in whoever was sitting closest to the door outside.

We’ll have to try again another day with a reservation but not a great experience.

I went to Tatsumi with a friend for lunch. He had heard good things about it and wanted to try it.
Its relatively small and if you are not looking for it you may miss it. The decor is good, simple but elegant. We were greeted and presented with menus. The prices are high to be sure, but the question is it value for money? I ordered the Beef Teriyaki lunch bento box and my friend ordered some sashimi. The food was amazing. The bento box had the beef, 3 pieces of the most delicious deep fried roll I have ever had, salad, rice and some tempura. There were all perfectly prepared and you get more than enough if you are hungry. My friend loved the sushi (he spent several years in Japan so he knows good sushi) and also added some Uni which was fresh and melted in his mouth.
Sometimes you pay a lot for food and its not that good, but in this case, the food was worth the money. Simply outstanding and we plan to visit again soon.

Vin was our server and he made the experience so special. His recommendations were so good and he treated us to a delicious plum sake for a dessert since it was my birthday. Food was decent, but between the tiny portions and the slow and chaotic service, definitely not worth the price.

We did the somakase. Our server was friendly, but she didn't confirm the price point we wanted. There were 15-20 minute waits between the first few courses, which were tiny pieces that we finished within 1 minute each time.

Between the long waits, we noticed the wait staff just move around the restaurants in a chaotic way without achieving much. One waitperson sometimes shouted to the other people from across the room and took our empty dishes away without informing us. These are not big deals, but it made us feel like we were eating in a diner, not a 100-per-person sushi restaurant.

After all the courses were brought out to us, we were not full, but after 2 hours with a lottt of waiting, we don't want to ask for more food and wait some more. And the bill was $200 for 2 people, WITHOUT any drinks. One sashimi course was $38 with some unremarkable tasting pieces of fish.

To put this into perspective, on the top of my mind: sushi restaurants with better ambiance/service where we were full after $200 or less: Uchi, Uchiko, Tomodachi, Fukumoto. Other cuisine restaurants with better ambiance/service where we were full after $200 or less: Perry's, Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, It's Italiana Cucina, 1618 Asian Fusion.

Not coming back. Don't understand what the hype is for.

It's taken me some time to write a review for Tatsumi because it's hard to put in words how others should anticipate the mind altering experience they will have here.

Short Version: You will leave wondering how someone could create such amazing flavors and depth from what you order. Sushi has not truly been experienced until you have a taste at Tatsumi. It will leave you stunned. Skipping this restaurant is missing a hidden gem in the world.

Long version:

Walking into Tatsumi feels warm, like being invited to a home meal. The waiting staff are beyond courteous and attentive. They strive to make amazing recommendations based on the most common ordered items.

The menu items are strategic. There is a wide variety, but not too vast, where combinations of items would overshadow the other. This is the place to explore. I've had food items here that I've enjoyed that I've had a distaste for in other sushi restaurants. I have been open to anything recommended and have not been disappointed in the many visits across a year visiting Tatsumi.

The chefs shine at their ability to observe your experience and make their recommendations based on your reactions. Their attention to detail and ability to observe you and your needs are 2nd to none.

The owner is as humble as he is dedicated to your experience. His tenacity and attention to detail shows in every dish that is served. Each dish has its own character, and their presentation always holds a hidden gem within it that makes it shine.

Please treat yourself to a sincerely amazing opportunity, and walk into Tatsumi. You'll leave feeling like you've finally had fish the way it was intended to be eaten.

I recently returned to this sushi place for the second time, and I continue to be amazed by the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. Everything we ordered was prepared to perfection!

My standout favorite was the A5 Miyazaki Hotate. The combination of the rich A5 beef with the creamy uni was divine—each bite literally melts in your mouth.

As big salmon lovers, we couldn’t resist the salmon sashimi, which was incredibly fresh and high-quality; it truly melts in your mouth. The mountain roll was also a delight, packed with flavors that stimulate the taste buds in the best way.

Unfortunately, they sold out of their wagyu tartare during our visit, so that’s definitely on our list for next time! Overall, this place never disappoints.

This is a nice Japanese sushi restaurant on Anderson Lane. My wife went with her friends before and they loved it. On our trip it was good, but not amazing. The place is nice and clean and has a good layout. The staff is mostly nice and helpful, although it seemed they were a little impatient. We ordered some appetizers, sashimi and a specialty roll. We really enjoyed the salmon and toro sashimi which was cut nicely and was fresh. Our off the menu specialty roll (I don’t remember the name) was spicy and was probably one of our favorites. The appetizers were OK. We had the Shishido peppers which were good and really spicy and the brussels sprouts were pretty good too. They have a wide range of drinks, mainly sake and wine, but also some beers.

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, sushi places in town, and I’ve been nearly everywhere. Chef Elvin is a gem - he made gorgeous nigiri, served multiple tables, answered phones, and chatted generously with me and other folks at the bar all with seemingly no effort. The nigiri itself was incredible - perfect formed, with well vinegared shari, sublime and wonderfully fresh fish, and no overwhelming garnishes but just small touches of flavor.

They had just gotten a shipment in and I got to try tons of different fish that I’d never experienced before. Chef Elvin asked if I liked silver-skin fish (yes!) and we were off to the races.

I would heartily recommend this spot over anywhere else that serves traditional sushi in Austin.

TATSUMI is an absolute gem and exactly what anyone should want in a sushi restaurant. The nigiri and sashimi are delicious forward-thinking without being pretentious.

While most sushi places can tend to be a little lazy with their rolls, TATSUMI treats the rolls with extra care and like their nigiri and sashimi, they're innovative without being pretentious. You feel like the rolls were made specifically for you.

Tatsumi is the best sushi experience I've ever had! Absolutely phenomenal. They specialize in nigiri, and the chefs have a way of seasoning each piece individually so that it's a flavor explosion! The fish just melts in your mouth, the rice is seasoned, the garnishes pop with citrus and spice - amazing. I've been there twice now and every bite has been the best I've tasted.

My favorites are the salmon skin hand roll (especially when the rice is seasoned inside), the escolar nigiri, Gary's roll, and the chili hamachi appetizer. Tiffany, the manager, is a gem for suggesting new things to try, and all the staff are excellent.

We came in as a small group based on a Yelp article detailing the best 100 Sushi restaurants in the USA. The server named Vin greeted us and took us on a fantastic culinary experience. He curated a one of a kind tasting menu based on a few of our preferences and we could not have been happier! Fantastic food, fantastic service, fantastic music. Will definitely come again! Thank you Vin!

We stopped by on a whim on a Friday, wanting to try a new place in our area, and Tatsumi did not disappoint. The ambiance felt both cozy and high end all at once. The fish was fresh on the nigiri (the flounder and sea bass were our favorites), the rice was well seasoned, and the sake selection was great as well. Everything else we had from the sunomono salad (personal bar to judge bc most places make it too sweet or slimy) to the rolls were delicious. Will absolutely be back!

One of the best dining experiences I've had in Austin. Everyone was super attentive and Vin really knew his stuff. He helped us pick out a few things since we were unsure of what to order. Everything we ordered tasted fresh and delicious and the service was top tier. The attention to detail was impeccable, from the food to the way things were arranged on our table. Will definitely return.

Our initial visit was one year ago and we decided to come back a year later for a second time. Probably some of the best quality sushi in Austin and an even better dining experience. Vin and Chef Elvin were exceptional with their customer service. It's so evident that they build great relationships with regulars who come into the restaurant. Chef Elvin made some amazing recommendations for us to try, all of which were masterfully crafted. They were even so kind to give us a handroll on the house because they saw how much we were enjoying the food.

10/10 would recommend for the experience and the quality of food!

Excellent sushi spot. We typically get mostly sashimi and this was a great spot for it. I wanted a roll with low rice and they actually proposed a cucumber wrap instead which was so good. They were very proactive and making recommendations based on our tastes and the chef even made a modification because the nigiri item we requested would not have been good as sashimi and something similar, but that worked.

I also accidentally got some thing that had Uni on it, which I know is a delicacy, but I don’t care for it. It was my (pricey) mistake, but they still swapped it out for something else that I would love at no charge.

We went here on a business dinner, but will be back here for a sushi date night for sure!

We ordered the hotate crudo ($20ish), 24 pc sashimi omakase ($80), and a spicy hotate hand roll ($10) .. I obviously love scallops!

Food: everything was really great, and I was pleasantly surprised that the sashimi all came with their own little twist- tasted some truffle oil on the salmon, some yusu kosho on the flounder, the barracuda and scallops had a chart, etc. for $80 it was bomb! The scallop crudo was good too and the uni fresh. The handroll was my favorite! It didn’t rely on heavy spicy mayo and was flavorful and the rice/ scallop balance was perfect.

Service: when we ordered, we were told the omakase would take awhile, which was fine since we also had ordered an app- the crudo. 20 mins go by and the waitress stops by and tells us it’s gonna be a bit longer. 6-7 mins later she comes by and lets us know they’re instead going to bring out the crisp with the omakase. So it took maybe 35 -40 mins til we got anything. But she did bring over some miso when she broke the unexpected news that we’d be waiting longer. There were only 6 tables sat at the time but it looked like there was only 1 sushi chef on Sunday at 6ish.

Atmosphere: music is super loud. Cute place tho.

Such a hidden gem, super underrated, unbeatable price performance, hands down the best sushi spot in Austin!

We've already been four times in as many months, and each time we get the 24pc sashimi omakase for a wide variety of fresh fish. This is a great way to try in-season specials that aren't on the usual menu, like geoduck and torched barracuda. Get the sashimi plate, handokase, or chef's choice nigiri to try a bit of everything, or get the server omakase for a personalized experience. The rolls are excellent, all the ingredients work perfectly with each other, especially the a5+ebi+uni+maguro and the kanda temaki. The toppings are thoughtfully paired to highlight the fish, even the shiso and daikon garnish is tasty and refreshing, and the house-made shoyu enhances everything; it's less salty and more flavorful than regular soy sauce, and I find myself missing it when we go elsewhere. Make sure you finish with the Hokkaido uni if they have it, it's so creamy and sweet that there's no need for dessert.

The service is top-notch. The staff creates an amazing experience each time. The vibe is upscale but not pretentious. It's pretty quiet on weeknights, but can get busy on the weekend. Thank you Chef Elvin and staff, we'll see you very soon!

Amazing sushi amongst a lot of mediocre places in Austin.

Edit: Came back here a second time with my mom and we both got food poisoning from the tartare :/ The first day, I couldn’t walk or stand for more than a minute without vomiting. It’s been two days and I’m still dealing with headaches, stomach pain, nausea, and diarrhea. For that reason, I’m taking off a couple stars.

Very disappointed, because I really liked the food/style/presentation of this restaurant.

Wow, a sushi experience you'll remember for the rest of your life. At the start, the head chef said it was the closest thing to eating sushi in Tokyo without buying a plane ticket, and set my expectations very high. I was STILL blown away with how good it was!

I must have eaten sushi over 1000 times across at least 50 different restaurants, and this one beats them all. It's pricey but worth every penny. If you enjoy sushi, you have to treat yourself to this place.

My husband and I first visited Tatsumi Sushi back in January of this year to celebrate my birthday--and it was "love at first bite" for the both of us. The freshness and preparation of the sushi took me back some 30 years-prior, when I had the joy of first trying sushi in Maui. Flash-forward to a more recent visit to Tatsumi Sushi, this time to celebrate my son's 27th birthday. The sushi we all gorged ourselves on was as exquisite as my prior visit: Very fresh, so flavorful--it is the absolute BEST sushi that I have ever had in Austin, and Chef Elvin is the man who makes this magic happen! The owner, Tiffany, is a gracious hostess who goes out-of-her-way to make a wonderful dining experience for her customers. If I could give a "100 Stars" rating for Tatsumi Sushi, I most defintely would!

Amazing food and experience from beginning to end! We ordered 10+ different items because the quality of the fish and the flavors were so good. Our server and the owner were so welcoming and made excellent recommendations. We are big fans of Uni and raw fish and this place has lots of both. However, they have a huge menu and have something for everyone, even if you aren’t a raw fish fan. This is the kind of neighborhood restaurant that doesn’t get the attention, but is serving food with the same quality and complexity as the big sushi names in Austin. We are definitely coming back and making this our go-to sushi place!

Sushi Experience №139

This is by far the best sushi in Austin. It’s better than Uchi, Uchiko, Tomodachi, Soto and the rest. I’ve been to all these places several times and I tried to figure out why Tatsumi is so good. I think I now know why. They go after the best cuts of the fish and they use minimal garnish since if the fish is of the highest quality you need to only do minimal stuff to bring out that great natural flavour! Their omakase is a feast for the palate AND the eyes! I can go crazy about this but their Shima Aji, their Uni, their Madai, their butterfish, their Toro, their.., it’s all unforgettably good! You have to choose well. They. Have a menu of rolls and sundry items where their distinct flavours are not as pronounced but if you order from their fresh fish menu, the results are outstanding! It’s a little more pricey but isn’t this why we work so hard —- to eat Tatsumi fine sushi!

I am a purist and their sushi is the best and the main reason to visit again, and again and again. It’s not their great service but their sushi, not their wonderful accompaniments like genuine wasabi, or spicy edamame but their great sushi, not the fabulous service by their staff including the owner, Tiffany but their great sushi and not even their unexpectedly delicious desserts ( actually the best, moistest Tiramisu I’ve ever had) but their sushi. Go try it — you’ll agree with me.

Our favorite sushi place in Austin.

The quality is as good or better than much more expensive places, and the rolls and nigiris are super creative. The uni is so good, the sashimi moriwase is amazing, all the fish tastes so fresh, and the A5 ebi uni maguro roll is my favorite roll of all time, each component is perfect.

The service is fantastic. Elvin, the head sushi chef, is super friendly and skilled.

It's a true gem and not to be missed. True 5 stars.

Definitely a hidden gem in N Austin and worth a visit regardless of where you are in town. Tatsumi offers a fresh menu with some really nice cuts of fish. My wife and I checked it out at random and were delighted by Chef Elvis' restaurant and style. We will definitely be coming back as their sake menu is also quite extensive.

I would give 6 stars if I could! I've been to Tatsumi Sushi several times and every time they've taken such good care of my party. The waitstaff are so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The ambience is also very nice, hip, but classy.

Tiffany and Vin, our waiters this time, simply asked us a few questions before blowing us away with a phenomenal several course meal prepared by the friendly chef, Elvis. Genuinely some of the best flavors of fish I've ever tasted. This has been one of my favorite sushi restaurants since the first time I tried it, and tonight might have made it my favorite period.

If I could leave 11 stars, I would. Vin was our server, party of 3 (2 adults and a tween), arrived around 6 PM on Mother’s Day. There were 4-5 tables in the restaurant upon arrival.

Greeting was prompt, and we were seated. Menus had countless options and after we ordered edamame, gyoza, fresh PEI oysters and some Uni (both Santa Barbara and Japanese) for appetizers, we were stumped.

The owner stopped by our table and offered to put together our very own dining experience. Everything was absolutely phenomenal. The flavors were balanced, the textures were excellent.

We had Spanish Mackerel, a Nigiri spread (chef’s choice) with 7 different kinds of fish, each of which came with its own unique preparation (black salt, truffle, chili pepper, roasted garlic, etc), Shina aji sashimi, the Gary roll, and foie gras for dessert.

This place is unsuspecting. The service is impeccable and personable. The food is extraordinary. As we sat there over the course of 2 hours, many people came in who clearly had a personal relationship with the owner and the chef. It is a neighborhood gem for sure.

This meal was not inexpensive, and the two paying adults felt it was absolutely worth every penny. If you haven’t ventured over to Tatsumi, don’t walk, run!

My first time to Tatsumi was really great actually. My second (and probably last) time to Tatsumi was not good at all.

The food is pretty spectacular. I enjoy the Omakase 24 piece sashimi platter a lot. I also really like the wagyu tartare (the chips are slightly too sweet - I think they're seaweed). We also got the brussel sprouts. The last time, we ordered the Shima Aji sashimi and asked them to deep-fry the bones so we could eat them. The bones weren't fried enough so it was too hard to bite through.

The service during my first visit was a 3 or 4 rating. The waitress was nice but very dry - like no personality. It was an awkward interaction. The service during this past visit was horrible. No one was rude - that's good. But things were so extremely slow especially when we ordered mostly raw items. Another table near us that came in 25 minutes after we did got their sashimi platter at the same freaking time we did! The first round of food included a roll, brussel sprouts, and some sashimi pieces - we waited probably 15 min for this which was fine. My hot tea, on the other hand, took forever to bring out. Then, the wait for the 24 piece sashimi took way too long - I was very frustrated and upset. I was at a point where I just wanted to leave. I went there to celebrate an occasion with my family but we all were so upset by the time we left.

The atmosphere feels like a club/bar. The music is slightly loud and the type of music is house/dance music. I guess I wouldn't mind it if I had my food on time but I just had a really bad experience and it was seeping into not liking the atmosphere.

The waitress thanked us for being patient but there was nothing done to compensate us. The manager/owner didn't come by and check on us or apologize. No one came by to even explain what happened! It was just brushed under the rug.

I won't ever come back - it would bring back very upset feelings walking back into that restaurant.

I came here with a party of 5 people. We had a 8:00 reservation. Showed up and no one greeted us for about 5-10 min. Kept getting glances by who I believe was the owner and the staff but no one acknowledged us. After greeting us, our table wasn’t even made even though we had a reservation. We were sitting down and decided what to order, we talk for a bit. I look at the time and it is now 8:40 PM. We got there at 8:00. There were 2 tables who got there after us and already had food. No one checked to see if we were ready to order and didn’t take our orders until 8:45. Eventually, we got our food. The food was good. While dining, we noticed the owner going around checking in on tables. Never once checked in on us. Gave special attention to other tables while we sat there for 40 min without even having our order taken. I work in the restaurant industry and this was the worst service I’ve ever gotten. Regardless of how busy it was, how do you completely neglect a table of 5 guests? We went there to celebrate 2 birthdays and left completely disappointed.

Impeccable service, even better food. From the moment we walked in, we were attended to with 5–star service. We weren’t sure what we wanted so our server curated our meal, coursing it out over 6 courses from lightest fish to heaviest. It turns out he was not a server, but a floor manager and/or chef(?) anyway, he knew his stuff and clearly cares about his craft.

Every single item was delicious to the point that we would just sit there and look at each other, wondering why and how this sushi was so much better than anything else we had eaten. Something about the attention to detail, the delicate balance of flavors, and the quality of the fish made it exquisite. This is our new favorite sushi restaurant and I would go here over Uchi any day.

This is absolutely a secret gem. As a picky eater living in New York City, I have to recommend this place. we didn’t expect the sushi and sashimi would be so fresh. It’s hard to find any other Japanese places in town with this freshness and quality in this price range.

We have tried many other Japanese restaurants that are recommended by the food magazines in Austin , those are great, but not as cost-efficient as this one.
In other restaurants, with the similar price range, you can only get one piece of nigiri per order, but this restaurant you got two pieces per order! We are super satisfied with the entire meal.

We ordered o toro, king salmon belly, A5 wagyu, foie gras nigiri etc. everything is eye-opening delicious. Believe me living in New York City for 3 years I’m a picky eater. Please come before it gets discovered by the crowd!

Me and my special friend Austin just had the best Valentine’s Day! This place is so romantic! The sushi is the freshest fish I’ve had since we moved here from San Diego. The owner Tiffany actually gave us a free desert and I was delicious!! My favorite place in town, 10/10 would recommend!
