I went here on a fancy dinner date with my husband and it was a blast! The food was wildly delicious, my favorite was the white salmon sashimi from Japan Express (fish shipped in from Japan the night before). Best fish I've ever had in my life. Because my husband and I were sharing plates, the waitstaff was accommodating and let us order 4 pieces of sashimi so we'd get equal pieces.

My friends and I had an incredible dinner at Soto. Our server Katie provided amazing service — she gave excellent recommendations, coursed our dinner perfectly, and made the experience extremely joyous overall! This restaurant is so incredibly lucky to have her. Everyone in the front of house was so friendly, and given how beautiful and delicious our food was, the back of house was clearly killing it as well. There are so many special treats on this menu. We’ll be thinking about that Uni Pasta for a long time. An unforgettable time — can’t wait to come back! - JJ and Shawdi

Soto is a great Japanese restaurant where you can enjoy not only delicious sushi but also a variety of flavorful dishes. We visited during happy hour and tried a few items from the special menu. We ordered Madai Crudo, Softshell Crab Tempura with Pan-Fried Egg, Pari Hamachi Maki, Chef's Choice 5pc Nigiri, Truffle Risotto with A5 Wagyu, Torched Toro Truffle, and a Chu-Toro Handroll. Every dish was tasty, and we really enjoyed the rich flavors in each one. I have to mention the Truffle Risotto—it was creamy and had a wonderful, rich taste from the A5 Wagyu. It was definitely a highlight. The Chef's Choice 5 Nigiri was also fantastic, with the fish being super fresh. The Pari Hamachi Maki stood out too, with such a fresh and vibrant flavor. Overall, it was a great experience!

Sushi presentation and taste was amazing. The cocktails we tried were perfectly crafted. The best part of the evening was the exceptional service from Jennifer, our waitress. She was extremely knowledgeable on every aspect of the food and drink menu, both of which are massive. Jennifer was also very attentive without being intrusive. A very rare skill. Her recommendations were spot on which made our evening even better. Jennifer genuinely made us feel like special guests. Even though the prices were a bit high, the food and service quality will bring us back again and again!!

This is a chic upscale sushi join in a swanky party of town that is all looks and no substance. Price tag comes in toe with the swanky digs. For two rolls and water, it was $56.
It's not worth the food, and it's definitely not worth the cost.

Overall, it’s a decent spot with the advantage of being easier to secure a reservation compared to other sushi restaurants. However, I feel the food quality could be improved, especially given the price point. The sake markup was notably steep, even by usual standards. While the service and food were good, they failed to leave a lasting impression.

We had a fantastic meal. I had the wagyu risotto and a cocktail, and she had a roll and ginger beer. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. We had driven from San Antonio for a show, and we were hungry. This was the perfect spot. I definitely plan on coming back.

By far, my favorite sushi spot in Austin!!! The service is beyond exceptional every single time I've been! (Catie, in particular, has provided absolutely excellent service every time I've had her) The head chef is one of the nicest and most professional people I've had the pleasure of meeting, and THE FOOD! OH, THE FOOD! It is where I would choose to have my last meal from if I could! I truly do not have enough good things to say about this place! If you want the best sushi in Austin, it's here! If you really feel like splurging on a nice treat, the omikaze is the best meal I have had in my life, and I stand by that completely. I'll include some of the pictures below of a few of my favorite dishes I've had! Seriously, come eat here!

Edit: Still absolutely amazing, every single time!

The food here is exceptional and it is some of the best veggie/vegan sushi rolls I've ever had. I think it's odd they don't advertise it as a thing they do, but they do, and it is phenomenal.
Just a weird thing: I've been to the locations in Cedar Park and on Lamar -- both have been exceptionally cold, like uncomfortable cold. Wear a sweater.

This place has good quality sushi/ nigiri/sashimi but could have been better for the price. Their Mizu Green Tea is literally just a few drops of shochu and it costed $12. They could have made it a green tea cocktail instead of just drip some drops of alcohol there. Service was decent until we stopped ordering.

If you are searching for delicious Japanese cuisine in ATX, then Soto should be on your list of restaurants to visit. Fish sourced from Japan, Asahi on Draft, and servers that are knowledgeable and fun to speak with. I was delighted by every dish, from the smooth miso soup, to the crunch of the White Tiger Roll, and the sweet sent of roasting vanilla beans on the "Salmon Over Fire", these are dishes that really impact your senses. I would definitely visit again to experience more of the Japanese culinary fun that Soto offers!

How do I even start?! I’m out of words! The food, ambiance, experience, out of the world! Just amazing!
Want to have the best sushi in Austin, visit Soto! Their Vegetarian Menu is just the best!
Their Garlic Chili Tofu is perfectly crispy and has lemon zing to the chili and to top it has a perfect balance of taste! Just yum!
All their Nigiris taste exceptional. You would want to eat their Veggie potato chip nigiri again and again, it’s just wow! You cannot get enough of their potato chip nigiri!
Their Makimo Rolls are amazing as well!
Honey Truffle, Yum Yum Maki, Kinoko Truffle Maki, each better than the other!
The best part - Each has an amazing combination of veggies, distinct but perfectly do with each other. It’s a rare thing that you can taste all the veggies and their combination just makes you fall in love with it!
Their desserts are amazing as well. Passion Fruits Tart is just perfect. Passion fruit juicy boba, just fills you with juice and makes you fall in love with the dish. It’s a perfect symphony of tart and passion fruit juice. You’ll end up craving for more.
Everything about the place is just perfect. You will definitely crave for the taste and the experience!

Overall over priced. Service and atmosphere moderate. We ordered three pieces of tamago but they cancelled one piece. It was okay. However when they served two pieces of tamago, I could see they cut one in half to sell it in double price. That small piece is $7 total $14 for less than one egg. It was my birthday and I regretted so badly to come here. Oh plus, I left more than half of shishito pepper bc it was too spicy. I would rather go to odd du*& across on the street

Sooooooo so amazing, where do I start? This meal was one of the best we’ve had in Austin, easily. If you’re a fan or Sushi then it’s absolutely worth the stop. Every course was phenomenal and came out in a timely manner. Honorable mention for the fatty tuna because the texture was out of this world! The rolls, sashimi and nigiri went beyond our expectations, and all of the flavors were so well put together. The drinks were not the star of the show, but they were good as well. Great sake menu, and good desserts too. Also, our server Vanessa was great! Can’t wait to come back.

Couldn’t find their HH menu online anywhere so I thought I’d post a picture. Ordered the chefs choice 5 pc nigiri and it couldn’t have been a better deal; nigiri was put together beautifully and it included some premium cuts of fish. The soft shell crab tempura was delicious, and the salmon tiradito + tuna truffle were flavorful. Note that in comparison to Uchi, I’d say that the dishes here lean more towards external seasonings so the fish doesn’t shine through as much, however that’s more subject to personal preference. All in all, I’d definitely return - we even ordered the hot rock (off HH) which was amazing.

Omakase experience was great. Pairing and recommendations from the staff and insight for each dish were spot on. Chef Jason and his team did well with presentation and embodying unique flavors. Lychee on nigiri, strawberry jam topped idiot rockfish and smoked truffles are just some examples of how our night was made memorable by the omakase experience. I appreciated the off the menu items the most. But if omakase isn't for you, at least make sure to try the premium toro. Everything was great thanks again.

We went for the lunch and got dishes off of the lunch specials menu! First impression was being slightly ignored by our server. We walked in, the server saw us but didn’t acknowledge us, so I thought there’s a separate host who would seat you. A couple moments later after waiting at the door, the server who previously ignored us decided to seat us. So points off on service because I was so confused like am I supposed to seat myself or?? A heads up like “I’ll be there with you shortly” would be nicer.

We got the Uni pasta and Choice maki lunch specials (vegetable tempura with spicy salmon + alaskan rolls). We also got 3 pieces of salmon sashimi from the main menu. The flavoring here could use a bit less salt. A lot of the dishes were salty even the salad, which is supposed to be refreshing, was kind of salty. Miso soup + salad that came with the lunch specials were fine.

I enjoyed the rolls, which they gave a generous amount of salmon and a good ratio of rice to fish. I would come back for these rolls specifically because they were quite good.

The uni pasta was what I came there for. I was a little disappointed with the saltiness of the dish. It was extremely rich and heavy, expected, but it would have helped with the taste so much better if there’s more of a sweeter flavor. But that being said, the uni pasta was still very good. I wouldn’t come back for it though because I was having a hard time finishing it with all the saltiness. Also, most sushi restaurants that serve uni pasta use spaghetti noodles. Soto uses a kind of noodles that look kinda like ramen noodles tbh. I would have enjoyed it with actual spaghetti noodles, but that’s my personal preference.

The salmon sashimi had a sour sauce on top. I would prefer enjoying the sashimi by itself without any added sauces because if I’m paying more for fancy salmon sashimi, I’d like to taste the salmon on itself, so I don’t think the salmon sashimi was fatty and soft tbh. Like why would you need to add a sauce on top of regular salmon sashimi, which is kinda expensive, like is it not fresh enough lol? I didn’t order salad salmon.

Veggie tempura was fine. The sweet potato was very sweet though.

Overall, I would come back for the rolls and not the sashimi or the uni pasta.

1 great experience, 2 poor experiences

I took my wife here for her birthday several weeks ago and had a great experience and service with Dylon. The nigiri pieces are unusually small, but the excellent service and food quality made up for the cost.

We returned last night to treat family visiting from out of town and had a very underwhelming experience. While the kitchen food would come out quickly, we had to wait over 2 hours for 24 pieces of nigiri (3 sets of 8 different fish) even though we ordered everything upfront. More than a few pieces of nigiri had tendon strings within the meat and we eventually started talking about canceling the last pieces because we were simply ready to leave by the end. Our waiter, can't remember his name, asked where our out-of-town family is from and then says how he hates that city... twice. We often felt forgotten about during the long waiting periods between nigiri bites and the quality just didn't meet the dissapointment of the wait and service this time.

Another issue is with the $25 off coupon we were given by Soto, which states that it is valid during weekdays only and cannot be used with other special offers. A couple of weeks ago, my wife takes a friend here for weekday lunch to use the coupon and they ordered only nigiri pieces and no lunch specials. Yet, she was rejected when trying to use the coupon. I called and asked the GM about it and was told that lunch service itself is a special offer and somehow the customer is supposed to know that despite it not saying that on the coupon. So, it seemed deceptive and a foolish point to assert over $25 considering the average cost of dining here.

We will not be returning any time soon.

We did take out. We love the food at Soto, but we live in Lakeway with kids so dine-in isn’t always an option. Again, we love this place for their food, but the reliability of take out is really tough. I placed an order to pick up on my way back from the airport. It was supposed to be ready at 7:31. When I arrived, they said “8 more minutes”. Okay, I thought. No problem. Every time I checked in, they told me 10 more minutes. Finally, when my order was 20 min late, I just asked them to give me what was ready and take the rest off the tab. This place is expensive and although the food is wonderful, just be prepared for a lackluster experience if you’re taking it to-go.

Staff were lovely and the venue is gorgeous- granted I think it would look prettier at night. The chef’s choice nigiri lunch special was delicious and filling (and decently priced). I was quite happy with the chefs’ choice(s). I’m glad the wasabi and the ginger were available upon request- I’m sure that helps cut down on some food waste. I’d love to come back to Soto to try their omakase.
I’m not the biggest fan of their dessert menu though— the tart’s crust was a little soggy and the green tea tiramisu wasn’t the best one I’ve had. The Sapporo stout cheesecake was creative and the best one out of the three. Granted you come to soto for sushi and not masterpieces from a patisserie, so it’s no biggie.

Love sushi. Will come back. Lychee martini is excellent. Happy hour menu till 6 has lots of options. Crunchy salmon roll, spicy hibachi are some of our favorites.

Lunch was great, they have specials that made choosing things super easy. I got the chefs nigiri combo which had nigiri, maki and tempura. Everything was very well done, the freshness of the ingredients shone through. The variety offered in terms of flavors and preparation style was fantastic.
Solid lunch, would recommend.

We came here for the first time to celebrate our anniversary, and we had a wonderful experience.
We ordered the following:
Madai Crudo
Chilli Hamachi
Hamachi Apple
Truffle risotto w/A5 Wagyu
Green Tea Tiramisu for dessert

Salmon over fire
White tiger w/yuki kombu
Tuna truffle
Kappa salmon maki

While nothing was a disappointment, the first 5 dishes listed were the highlights of our meal. Each of those had either a strong or unique pairing of flavors that took us by surprise.

If anyone else is a fan of Uchi like us, I would say Soto is comparable if not better in some aspects. Generally, I think Soto's hot dishes are better than Uchi/Uchiko, but I enjoy both equally for their cold dishes and sushi.

Overall, I would definitely come back and recommend anyone to try out Soto!

Restaurant had lots of seating options, at the bar, inside, or outside.

Service was great, our server was so sweet, gave great recommendations, and told us items even off menu.

There's lots of options of food to choose from including a daily menu. Plus, theres a pretty extensive wine and sake menu (a full page front and back).

We ordered the daily special scallops with beurre blanc, the land & sea roll, the tuna nigiri sampler (would recommend if you love fatty tuna), the off menu tuna box (not bad but wouldnt order again since the toppings were mediocre), uni pasta (I would recommend since the noodles are ramen noodles so a good balance between the richness of the uni and the alkalinity of the noodles), matcha tiramisu.

We were only in town for SXSW but would come back and recommend to others.

Definitely an amazing experience, we had a variety of rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. Definitely worth the price tag and probably the best nigiri I’ve had. Our server was very insightful when we would ask for recommendations and he was always attentive. It does tend to be a bit crowded and some tables are fairly small but that is alright, if anything you also have the option to dine outside. Reservation is definitely recommended though!

I never leave reviews but I cannot rave more about Soto and Chef Adam and I should do so publicly instead of just privately!

I come here all the time and sit at the bar with Chef Adam for Happy Hour. He and his team are the BEST. The service is top notch and this is some of the best sushi in the city (been here for over a decade). It's not cheap, but that's because it shouldn't be! I've never had something that didn't taste great and wasn't beautifully presented. Everything from their apps to their warm dishes to their sashimi and nigiri to their rolls is perfection and it's one of the few places left where it's not super difficult to go! Stop in before a movie (or after) for a perfect date night. Love you, Chef Adam!

I made a reservation over 2 weeks ago for Valentine’s Day dinner at Soto. Today, I received a call that they will only be doing a chefs menu on Valentine’s Day. My 5 year old doesn’t eat $175 worth of food! Now I can’t find a reservation anyplace else with this short term notice. Just terrible!

The best dinning presentation I have ever experienced! Our server Tammy was lovely so was so patient with us and extremely detailed, describing every item we asked about. Thank you for making our supper that much more enjoyable! The menu is large with so many options from drinks, to hot and cold items, nigiri, shashimi. Some dishes and drinks were a bit pricey HOWEVER it is 100% worth the price! The presentation, freshness, taste, and the quality. Very well worth it. If you are in Austin Texas this is DEFINITELY a must try. For my wife and I, our bill totaled $320 after taxes not including our tip. We had two bottles of sake, 8 beers, and a variety of dishes. We would do it again in a heartbeat!

Went here for an anniversary and loved their Hon maguro flight (4 diff types of tuna - really delicious), seared sake toro (fatty salmon), aburi hamachi (seared wild yellowtail - my personal favorite), unagi (freshwater eel), anago (conger eel) and hamachi toro (fatty wild yellowtail). Other items we had were the snow crabs (zuwaigani) and scallops (hotate).

We also tried their masaba nigiri (mackerel) but wished that they didn’t try to cover up the strong flavor of mackerel with too much citrus. The white tiger roll did not have as much flavoring as the other items on their menu. Their uni pasta and A5 wagyu truffle risotto were really rich, creamy, and strong umami flavor. The taste was unique and good, but very heavy. Definitely must be shared.

They gave us a free dessert to celebrate and we had their stout cheesecake which was great after the meal. The food total was $237 for everything we ordered. Great place for special occasions.

Wish I could give this place 10 stars! I dined in with my family on New Year's Day, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. Valeria, our server, was not only incredibly helpful and kind but also recommended amazing dishes. The restaurant also surprised us with a Green Tea Tiramisu dessert for my father's birthday! Every aspect of our visit left us thoroughly impressed. My family and I loved everything there, and we can't wait to go back for another extraordinary dining experience!

This New Year’s Eve I started a new tradition to ring in the new year - experiencing an exquisite sushi omakase in my hometown of Austin, Texas.

Soto’s omakase menus range from $175 to $250 per person, so this is not an inexpensive activity; however, I found my meal to be world-class and probably deserving of the lofty price.

We began with some specials off their Japan Express menu, which is comprised of sushi flown to Austin from the famous fish market in Tokyo.

These included the following:
Kinki (idiot rockfish - i am not kidding this is really the name of the fish)
Inada - baby yellowtail
Shinano Yukimasu - snow trout
Kama Toro - premium bluefin fatty tuna
Mizu Tako - hokkaido octopus
Uni Toast
Kanpachi Carpaccio
Hirame Truffle

You definitely also want to try the uni pasta, the foie gras sushi and the lobster tempura.

The service was impeccable, and the kitchen sent us a free extra dish since we did the omakase.

Parking is plentiful and free in the Lamar Union garage.

If you are looking for a sushi omakase for a special occasion, Soto should be in your consideration set.

I’ve been here several times and the food is always great. Our service tonight was excellent as well. My only complaint is no one told me there is a charge for ponzu sauce and fresh wasabi. Given the cost of our dinner it would have been nice to comp those or at least told there’s a charge before being surprised when I got the bill.

Company spent $800 here and we got so much food. Staff was really kind and quick.

Skip:
Edamame- tastes like they were from frozen, bad
Shishito- nothing special
Tempura- nothing special
The o-toro sashimi- not worth the price
White tiger roll- boring
Honey truffle roll- boring
Tiramisu- the matcha was a bit off putting

Order:
Brussels- perfectly toasted
Crunchy rice- super fun to eat
Uni pasta- unique and creamy
Soto roll- the best one

Maybe:
Gyoza- too expensive for the portion, wagyu minced won’t taste different from regular ground beef
Chili hamachi- not filling but flavorful
