Meh. This use to be our favorite sushi place. Have been going to Mushashino since they were off of MoPac. But last couple of visits were disappointing. The rolls definitely have smaller amounts of fish and more rice, but the same $$$. Our waitress was good this last time and seemed to be working her ass off, so appreciate that. But they also had very limited beer and sake options and only small to go boxes. Honestly this place has gone downhill, which makes me sad. Lots of good memories there.

Not sure about the hype, the place has nice decor and great service located within a commercial office plaza. The sushi itself is average with a lot of rice and not so much effort has been put into the rolls. They can make it better by designing the rolls to looks more appealing and to be more flavorful.

Ok so we usually go here all the time but it was abysmal this time. Soggy soggy soggy! Don’t give me soggy food! Especially when that food costs an arm and a leg! Spicy crab roll was soggy and had a bowl of mayo to drink with it f’in nawh. Server didn’t come back often, this place plummeted. There’s a good chance I won’t be back .

Do not eat here as it is far inferior to the better known established places and the prices are ridiculous - $85 for 5 pieces of toro tuna (see receipt). Tempura stuff was over breaded and dry. Pretty sure I didn't get correct sake that I ordered. I don't review much but this was ridiculous. - K

The sushi chef used a dirty rag to wipe the sushi that had apparently been mistakenly prepared. He then dropped a piece of sushi on the order slip and picked them all up and put them back into the sushi bin. Gross.

Sushi Experience №28

Starting by saying the food was AMAZING. Lots of appetizer choices which were all great. I got the sushi/sashimi chef's choice combo and it was incredible. Even the half teriyaki order for my kid was delicious (also kudos for offering that!). The cocktail/wine selection was ok, but overall a great variety. On top of that the atmosphere was perfect - intimate but not too loud, laid back but just a bit edgy.
Our server, however, was AWFUL. Had an attitude the entire time and looked at us like we were inconveniencing her by asking minor questions - my brother asked if anything special was done for birthdays and after a long pause she just said "mochi", which I never even got. We had to call her every time we wanted a drink and she didn't offer to go over the chef's selections with us. We would've much rather had been served by her apprentice who was super sweet!
Overall the food and ambiance was great, but the server did sort of sour our experience.

This place is very small and so making a reservation helps. It costs $10 per person for a reservation which is a lot. We arrive 10 minute before our time and were sat understanding it may be 10 minutes before we got served as our party was not present.

We ended up not being acknowledged by our waiter until 20 minutes past our reservation time and that was after complaining. It took that long just to get water. We were put in a corner that was difficult for waiter to give us our plates. Very disorganized and I was upset I chose this place for a special event.

Food was okay once we actually got service, but it is expensive. No paper menus - all QR codes which is fine except when spending $50 per person you expect a real menu.

Always, always awesome. Our server, Vy recommended the most fabulous sushi we may have ever had. (So much better than a recent trip to Uchiko.)

Starting with edamame and Tuna Tataki, We shared a couple of rolls: Big Southern w Black ink Rice and Spicy Spider served with a perfectly chilled Sancerre. We followed with a very light and delicious Japanese tiramisu.

The busy rhythm of the team of talented sushi chefs was a constant synchrony. No nonsense under iconic chef, Smoky's leadership. Genuine artistry. It was so special!

Really, really really good.

Had a nice Valentine’s Day dinner at Musashino. Parking was easy and after referencing the directory we found our way to the second floor restaurant. The service was good and the ambience was nice. It felt exclusive in a way. The sushi was yummy, I really enjoyed the Negihama traditional roll. We also dove into some Yellowtail nigiri at the end which hit the spot. All in all, I was a little underwhelmed but still enjoyed the meal.

Update 01-31-2024

Mushashino consistently delivers first rate sushi! As usual, we started with miso soup and a large house hot saki... both delicious. Our second course, as always, was the avocado kama, an avocado partially scooped out and refilled with crabmeat. Nice sauce on the top, outstanding as always. Something new on the menu this time, fried oysters... fixed wonderfully, and oh so tasty!

Then began the sushi parade... two blue fin tunas, both fatty, one big eye, the fatty one seared... to die for! Next up, salmon two ways, one king, one fatty... Yum! Followed by yellowtail tuna, one belly, one cheek: both delish! We paused a bit... more hot saki!

Jumping back in, first up was something new for us, seared Wagyu, perhaps an odd thing to order at a first rate sushi place, but it was great. We'll definitely get that again! Next on the plate was unagi (fresh water eel), served piping hot... always one of my favorites. On the recommendation of our sushi chef (we always sit at the sushi bar), we had the smoked escolar (mackerel), definitely a Texas-tasting fish! LOL More hot saki...

We next enjoyed a pile of tobiko, served battleship-style, very salty and tasty too. More hot saki... A round of salmon skin sushi followed... hard to describe, just get it if you can... At last, we ordered dessert - a combination of uni and salmon roe, again served battleship-style... heaven on a plate, and a great finish to a deliriously delicious dinner! Highly recommend Mushashino! It's a high price tag, but worth every penny IMHO!

January 2023

We went to Musashino to celebrate a birthday recently. The experience was as wonderful as always! The staff is cheerful, and the service spot on, attentive but not intrusive. We arrived when they opened so we were able to be seated immediately at the sushi bar.

The evening began with miso soup for two and a large hot sake. IMHO, it's the best miso soup in ATX. Our second course was an appetizer called Avocado Kama, which is partially hollowed out and stuffed with shrimp, crab, and a spicy sauce ... served piping hot. It was fantastic!

Our sushi indulgence began with nigiri pieces of the three super fatty tuna and salmon fish that were the specials that night. Incredible! Delicious! We returned to the regular nigiri menu next, and sampled the unagi, salmon and hamachi kama. The fish in this course was great, expertly prepared, and delectable! On the recommendation of our waitress, we went back to the appetizer section of the menu and tried the baby octopus kara age, five fried pieces with fish sauce. A new dish for us, and a great recommendation!

For our next course, we had mackerel and the ozzy roll. The mackerel was divine, a bit fishy, but in a very good way! The ozzy roll included unagi, shrimp, avocado and cucumber, with smelt caviar on the outside. The roll was different, very good, but not really something we would order again with all the other rolls on the menu. For our final course, I re-visited the unagi and my wife had the toro covered in mustard greens. She reported it was very good.

Finally, dessert ... we chose our usual, tanin bune, which is a combination of uni and salmon roe, served gunkan style (battleship-style). The uni was sourced from Tasmania, and was our first time trying that type of uni. It was creamy, lightly sweet, a bit less sweet than the California uni we usually order. The combination of the uni and roe presents a sweet and salty taste, and was lucious. We cannot wait to go back!

Walk-in. Host told us 40-45 minutes. The estimated wait was on the higher end, but we heard the food was good so decided to stay. We were seated 1.5 hours later. That’s just too long to wait and wished we had been told a more truthful time as we would have gone somewhere else. Server was friendly and comped us a drink but overall for the trouble it was not worth it. Poorly estimated wait time and lack of communication or apology from the host soured our entire experience.

Sushi Experience №40

We had a frustrating experience due to the disorganized host station. Arriving at 6:30 we were quoted a 20 minute wait. An hour later, after telling us the table was being set, they said they gave that table to someone with a reservation instead, and it would be another 15 minutes, at which point we left. Just very disorganized and rude. We always had a high opinion of Musashino, but we will not be back. So many better options in town now, and it's not worth being treated so rudely!

Sushi Experience №41

We had sashimi for two on a Friday. At sushi restaurants with the best reputation, I always opt for sashimi, chef's choice over nigiri and especially rolls.
This, in my opinion, is the way to enjoy the best selection. One of the best quality sashimi I've had in years; every piece was absurdly good! The selection was fairly standard, consisting of tuna, fatty tuna, escolar, salmon among others. Every piece was prepared to absolute delight and perfection, eliciting a state of ecstasy that put both of us into the strongest "sushi high" I've had in ages. They just fell apart in our mouthes, with perfect texture and freshness throughout.
Their legacy of quality remains unchallenged after all these years in operation. They did forget our request for salad and soup, and this isn't included as standard with the sashimi for two. Other than that, I can't remember a better food experience in a very long time.
Two quibbles: The wait can be a bit long sometimes, and the location is difficult to find, despite as they are the most popular business in the location by far. They'd do well to add signage on the side of their actual building and work to correct Google/Apple mapping directions to their business.

Been coming here all the way back to the late 90's. The "old" Musashino was so great. This location is a bit lame. Strip mall-ish. Not much atmosphere. We were spending about $150/head and had to order off of our phones - no paper menus. Server seemed overwhelmed / confused much of the time. Still good sushi. May go back at some point but there is a lot of competition these days.

Visited 2 years ago

Sushi Experience №56

I was so excited to give this spot a try, but I was definitely disappointed. We sat at the sushi bar and one of the sushi chefs was talking about how they wished they could have sick leave because he felt like he had COVID. That was a shock to us. Then he made us our nigiri scallop pieces and they were each $6. We watched him make the rolls and they were both 90% rice and only one tiny piece of scallop each. The Elvis roll we ordered fell apart as soon as we touched it. We were super sad this meal was underwhelming. I hope this was a fluke and we can come back to have a better experience, but this visit left me surprised and wondering if it’s always this way.

Sushi Experience №64

I’ve been coming to Musashino for over 15 years. My family (me, my brother, my parents, my wife, my wife’s siblings, etc etc) and I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars both here and at the former location off Mopac. Birthdays, anniversaries, promotions, etc — it was basically our go-to spot for a special evening. We’ve happily spent countless amounts of hours in the que waiting for a table (that table actually being at the sushi bar, which is our preferred spot) because we’ve always loved coming here. There was a point where we were coming at least once a week for years! I don’t think I’ve ever gotten out of Musashino spending less than $200 on a meal, even if it was only for 2 people and we order almost exclusively off the sushi menu.

Unfortunately, tonight’s experience really calls in to question our continued patronage, as much as I hate to say it. Shortly after arriving at the restaurant not long after they opened (about 5:40pm), my wife and I got a spot on the end of the sushi bar. We went about our normal ordering — a couple of cocktails, miso soup, gyu tataki, house salad. After that, we ordered a large hot sake (which we order no matter what time of year) and the nigiri/rolls/sashimi we usually order. We eat our food, talk about what we want to talk about, drink our drinks, etc. We finish said drinks and food. The waitress asks us if we want anything else and we do, but we aren’t sure what yet. After a few minutes, we decide on a few more things and another sake. The waitress then asks, about 15 or so minutes later, if we’ll be ordering any more food and we say no, we won’t, and that we’re happy to pay the bill. Bill comes, card handed over, bill paid. Before we can even finish the rest of our drinks, one of the servers (not our server) comes over to us and bluntly and sternly says the sushi bar has a long wait and tells us we need to leave. We’ve been here less than 2 hours and we’ve spent almost $300 and we weren’t finished with something we already paid for. We weren’t lollygagging, either. We weren’t being loud, we weren’t being slow, we weren’t being anything, really. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve patiently waited for a spot at the sushi bar in the past 15 years where you had people just sitting around well after their meals and drinks and bills were finished and paid, and the servers and staff did absolutely nothing. We just waited and we never complained a single time. We have never, ever complained. But this little bit tonight, how rude this server was, enough to make us feel stupid and embarrass us in front of other dinner patrons (noticeably enough for the woman next to my wife to look over with a somewhat surprised look)? Not acceptable. It was such a poor display of customer service, it effectively voided 15 years of previous enjoyment and however many more might have been on the horizon. There is absolutely no excuse that if for some reason they needed something or needed to move diners along to accommodate other customers it couldn’t have been conveyed politely and with respect. We would have understood. We didn’t need anyone to tell us that, we were already about to leave. It seems you guys have too short a memory of your regulars, especially ones who have been excellent customers for well over a decade. I suppose it would be appropriate for myself and my family and friends to reciprocate the behavior and just stop coming here or recommending you to anyone in the future.

This sushi restaurant is great!

I need to first mention the staff. The curly haired hostess was fantastic. She took great care of us when my reservation mistake (booked the wrong night) was discovered upon our arrival. The bartender made quality drinks and in a timely manner despite being the only one working at the bar. Our waitress was amazing, I wish we remembered her name (long hair and glasses). She was super knowledgeable about specific fish, other sushi spots in town and offered recommendations that were spot on.

We ordered the Ankimo (monk fish liver) as an appetizer, waitress recommendation, and were delighted with the freshness and taste. This was the best cooked bite we have ever had of Ankimo. From there we went omakase which included nagiri, sashimi, classic rolls, and dessert. We were most impressed with the quality and taste of the lean tuna, which I never say.

The star however was the basted and grilled teriyaki cod. Light, flaky, moist, mildly sweet- delicious on all counts.

The star drink was the Tequila Daisy cocktail. Chambord adds a hint of raspberry flavor making this drink unique and complex. Try it!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Musashino Sushi Dokoro, and I have to say, it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the beautiful, minimalist decor and the warm, welcoming atmosphere. The sushi bar was the centerpiece of the restaurant, and I could see the chefs working tirelessly to prepare each and every piece of sushi with the utmost care.

But of course, the real star of the show was the food itself. Every bite was a revelation, bursting with flavor and perfectly balanced in texture and temperature. The quality of the fish was simply outstanding - I had never tasted anything quite like it before. And the attention to detail in every dish was evident, from the delicate presentation to the unique flavor combinations.

One standout dish was the omakase course, which featured a variety of different types of sushi and sashimi. Each piece was served at the perfect temperature and with just the right amount of wasabi and soy sauce. The standout piece, for me, was the toro (fatty tuna), which melted in my mouth and left an incredible aftertaste that lingered for hours.

The server added brandy to desert at a price of 17$ not including the price of the desert. I didn't care for the server, I thought she took advantage of the young-uns. The bill was almost $400. That was with a $60 grauitity added. The food was good, but honestly, I would NEVER go back at that price.

I heard that it was a very busy store in the past, so I went to this place. The restaurant has a dark atmosphere. The server gave me flat draft beer and replaced it with bottled beer, and the food was not fresh among the nigiri, and the sushi had too much rice, so it didn't taste good. At the end, the checkout took a long time because the draft beer was not missing from the bill.

We were seated right away and our server Ashley (I know there are different spellings so I’m sorry if this is wrong) was very attentive, knowledgeable, and accommodating. She also had the food coursed out perfectly. The spicy smoked edamame is a must have. I work in the service industry so it was a special treat to go to dinner on a Friday night. Thank you for making our spontaneous date night so lovely!

Musashino is my go-to sushi place in Austin. They have the best unagi don (grilled "teriyaki" eel served over a bed of rice in a ju box) in town and I highly recommend trying it if you haven't already! In my opinion, the unagi don is more value compared to buying separate pieces of unagi nigiri. Note that the unagi don also comes with a soup and salad as a starter.

My friends and I always order the traditional maki and gedomaki rolls, but we also enjoy the marilyn mon-roll (unagi, avocado & seaweed), ozzy (unagi, shrimp, avocado, seaweed & cucumber), and ozzy II (unagi, yellowtail, seaweed & avocado). The black sabbath roll is unique and delicious - everyone that I know that has tried it has loved it! The black sabbath roll has jumbo shrimp tempura, habanero caviar, radish sprouts & squid ink infused sushi rice wrapped in seaweed and is served with jalapeño soy sauce. My favorite part of the meal is the orange slices that they provide as dessert.

B plus on the food. Having lived in Japan for many years, I can say this place wouldn't make it back home.

The service was D plus. The 3 young girls at the hostess stand would all be fired if I owned this place. Snooty attitudes and eye rolls ...

The bar tender had the nerve to toss a couple of straws on the counter instead of handing them to my wife.

The sushi was tasty. The tonkatsu was lousy.

They even had a gratuity to the tip and you don't have a choice.

I've been a musashino customer for over 20 years and this last trip, will be my last trip.

Check out the place called Sa'ten in East Austin if you want to have some real good food.

Sincerely,

Me

This is THE BEST sushi spot in Austin. Smokey Fuse is not just a sushi master, he is a genuinely good person.

I’ve enjoyed their fish on the reg since 2000, Musashino has consistently brought me good luck. Its where I go for business dinners and where I took my wife on our very first date. It is our spot.

My favorites dishes when available:

Avocado Kama: avocado, crab meat, shrimp and a creamy sauce

Otoro (super fatty tuna that literally melts in your mouth.)

Miyazaki Gyu: this the KING of A5 rated Wagyu. Miyazaki Farms is the only ranch to win two Wagyu Olympics.

Lobster roll: grilled lobster served nigiri style over a handful of rice.

It was tasty, but not as amazing as some of the other reviewers would have you believe. I go around and do omakases and this one was by far the worst omakase I've done. It was a four course meal which was just an assortment of other dishes found on the menu: 6pc sashimi, the miso black cod filet, the sushi deluxe, and mochi ice cream. Save yourself at least $30 per person and order them separate.

I hate to give a negative review but the Yelp waiting list is a joke. This place is about 20 minutes from where we live and I joined the wait list as we were walking out the door. It said at the time that there was about a 30 minute wait. 10 minutes later I got a text saying our table was ready and they would hold it for 5 minutes. I called to let them to know we were on our way and the person who answered said we would remain at the top of the list even though we would arrive after the 5-minute table hold time. When we got there we were told our top spot on the waiting list was no longer relevant because "we had about 8 walk-ins in the last 15 minutes" so we could expect no less than a 35 minute wait. My advice is not to bother with the Yelp waitlist, just walk in and expect a wait. I'm sure the food is great but we opted to go to another nearby restaurant that had a real, actual reservation available 15 minutes later and were seated immediately.

The food was AMAZING!!! Like...melt in your mouth salmon 🤤🤤 Took a little to be served once seated but it was understandable since it was mad busy. My only complaint was the yellowtail tasted off but it didn't really matter cuz everything else was delicious, the ambiance was lovely, and I loved the authentic Japanese feel

You almost have to know where it is to find it. That being said, it has a nice and well shaded patio. The interior has a traditional feel. The miso soup, fried tofu, rainbow roll, and salmon teriyaki were all excellent. Our server was prompt and professional. The price was reasonable all things considered. We will definitely go back.

Our new favorite Japanese restaurant. This place is hard to find and hidden away upstairs in an office building. We waited an hour for seats. Arrived at 8 pm, seated at 9 pm. We were worried they would close while we ate but that didn’t happen. The food came so fast we couldn’t believe it. Everything was high quality, from the drinks to rolls to tempura. Everything was quite memorable. Small sake was cheaper than cocktails so we will stick with that next time. Our waitress was very nice (even at the end of the night). The hostesses were very nice and helpful as well, even though they seemed exhausted from a busy shift. I have been to Japan and must say, this is the most authentic Japanese restaurant I have found in Austin.

Pros:
Excellent high quality authentic Japanese food
Attention to detail
Black ink rice in rolls
Food arrives quickly
Great drinks
Excellent service

Cons:
Long wait for seating
Crowded
Hard to find (we didn’t see any signs)

This place has quickly gone down hill since losing all their sushi chefs in the last 5 months. Now they have novices in training cutting and serving sushi!

No point even sitting at the sushi bar because u cant place an order with the "sushi chefs in training", have to order thru a waitress! HELLO! Wth? Then why sit at the bar? Oh I know, because the new chefs don't speak English and don't know squat about the menu. So yeah I can see why.

More importantly, since losing all their chefs the quality of the sushi has gone down hill fast. Fish does not taste or look fresh, it's not made well and lacks the touch it used to have.

First time here. There was a bit of wait, so it's best to reserve a table or add to the wait list ahead of time. Great selection of appetizers. The black cod was grilled to perfection.

The fatty bluefin tuna was just incredible. There's a great selection of nigiri (though it's odd that there's no crab option, real or otherwise) and rolls. Service was excellent. Sushi was presented beautiful. I'll post some pictures.

Excellent dining experience. Very traditional sushi. We had the waitress Micky curate most of our meal, it was amazing. She steered us outside our usual sushi experience. One of Austin's ORIGINAL sushi experiences. Great sake list. Definitely a must if you want "authentic" Japanese sushi. They have an excellent GF menu as well.

Google said I came here three years ago but I didn’t remember it. My wife and I came back this weekend and quickly decided it would be the last time. One positive thing that attracted me was they have a separate menu of the vegetarian options. Super helpful! But after the fact the veggie sushi options were very basic vs other restaurants.

I checked in with Yelp and arrived about five minutes before the time. The table wasn’t ready but I got the ready text five minutes later, so right on schedule. No problem so far. When we go to check in no more than a minute later we’re told our table was just given to a different Daniel. Ok... I guess that’s a weird coincidence but it’s still frustrating. I’d expect someone to ask for last names if there’s two of the same name on a list. I didn’t want to make some random people leave their table so I said we’d be fine sitting outside instead, but we still had to wait five or so more minutes for that to be ready.

After finally being seated the time between server arrival was very long all night. We didn’t order drinks so that we could order and leave sooner. The food trickled out after multiple “it’s coming right out”s, and it was just ok anyway. Not worth the higher prices vs similar dishes at other restaurants.

2 stars for adequate food but poor overall experience.

So I'm going to give 5 stars to this place but all the props go to Mike the sushi chef. I wasn't super impressed with what I ordered but in their defense I ordered basic stuff. I waited a long time to sit at the bar and it was very much worth it. Thank goodness I sat in front of Mike and he slipped me some of his favorites which will most certainly bring me back. I will definitely return and next time I'll just have him feed me. Their sushi is very fresh and they try very hard to please you!

Good service but they were out of several important cuts of fish on a busy night, all that was left was the less than stellar pieces of sushi. All bluefin tuna was out. Avoid the sea bass app, awful flavor and the fish was overcooked. Tamago was lacking flavor. The salmon belly was good though.

Mushashino never disappoints!  We recently stopped by on a Friday evening, arriving a little before opening to ensure a seat at the sushi bar.  We really enjoy conversing with the sushi chefs, especially at Musashino, because they all know their craft!  We had a medley of sushi, mostly what was recommended by the chef serving us.  Everything we had was 110% on the mark.  Perfectly fresh fish served perfectly prepared.  We usually don't have dessert when we're out for dinner, we made an exception this time ... Tempura Ice Cream was divine (see picture).  A most excellent evening, we will definitely be back soon.
