Compact, unpretentious locale for sashimi, specialty sushi rolls & Japanese kitchen entrees.
I think this place has potential to be a great spot. However, service was pretty slow, unorganized, and sloppy.
Very small and inside was full so we sat on the patio which was very nice. Our food was brought out in a weird order. The hamachi jalapeno appetizer was phenomenal but everything else was average and also very, VERY small. Value per dollar was not good. It would be different if the small sushi servings were outstanding but they were just okay.

I was invited here for dinner recently, and even though I’m not a fan of seafood, I still had a great experience. The menu is extensive, so I was able to find something I liked that wasn’t seafood at all. My friends, who do love seafood, were really happy with their meals as well.
The whole experience was enjoyable from start to finish. We had a reservation and were welcomed and seated right away. The waitress was very nice, polite, and knowledgeable, which made the evening even better.
The place is small, but it feels cozy and welcoming. Even though it’s a tight space, it wasn’t loud or noisy, which I really appreciated. The desserts were delicious, and while I didn’t personally try the main seafood dishes, they looked fantastic, and my friends were very satisfied!
Overall, it’s a lovely spot whether you’re a seafood lover or not, and I’d definitely recommend it!

Best sushi you can find in South Carolina, hands down. Honestly it is some of the best quality I've had in the US! Started off with some handmade gyoza. Skin is super thin, very good quality. Tempura was light and crisp, the murasaki sweet potato is my favorite.
Sashimi was cut perfectly and thick pieces. Toro just melts in your mouth, so fresh and delicious. The mackeral was not fishy at all, just great flavor.
he sushi was excellent. Especially the uni, such a rich and creamy taste and some of the freshest I've ever had. One of the specials was another type of mackeral that the server recommended was really tasty as well.
The sushi tastes as good as in Japan, and the chef has some of the best sushi making skills in the country! Our server was very attentive and told us about the restaurant history. After traveling to Japan, this is the best representative of the service and food you will experience anywhere in the area.

Service was great, thanks Annie. Gyoza was very good and fresh, but the shumai wasn’t the same, tasted/looked like the frozen packaged ones. Tempura was good especially the shiitake. I came for the sushi but it was only ok to me, the rice was either not seasoned at all or very under seasoned. The shari was lacking that balanced sweet/vinegary/salty flavor for me which I was expecting to help enhance the fish. Not sure if they ran out of seasoned rice by the time I got my food, would love to hear back from the restaurant on this.

We arrived when the restaurant was opening and a line was already starting outside the door which indicated the experience was going to be something special. We started with crispy tuna oshizushi which was delicious. Tried some nigiri - sea bream, octopus, unagi, and sea urchin. The nigiri was lovely. For rolls, we had the spider roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy yellowtail roll, and the house special. The best sushi I've had in Charleston for sure. Our server and the overall experience was excellent as well. Highly recommend!

Shi Ki was a good restaurant but their success has gone to their head. I’ve been eating there since it opened 20 years ago. Spent tens of thousands of dollars there. Called to make a reservation. The girl who answered was extremely rude, said the best she could do was 5:00 pm and I’d have to be gone by 6:15 pm. Then she just hung up.

I had the pleasure of trying the Sushi Omakase at Shiki Charleston, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. Every piece of sushi was incredibly fresh, with ingredients that showcased high quality and authenticity, comparable to the standards you'd expect in Japan.
The server was attentive and patient, offering thoughtful recommendations when I had questions about the menu.
The atmosphere was warm and cozy, creating the perfect setting for a relaxed dining experience. I especially appreciated the small details, like the selection of Japanese books on the shelf, which added a charming touch and provided something enjoyable to browse through while waiting.
Overall, Shiki Charleston delivered an experience that felt authentic and thoughtful. If I ever find myself in Charleston again, I’ll definitely be returning.

Just an excellent experience all around. Impeccable service, we received a drink menu during our wait which was expected to be 30 mins but we were seated a lot quicker than that. The staff is incredibly accommodating, kind and warm. Speaking of warmth, they have outdoor space heaters that make outdoor dining super cozy in this cold weather. 11/10 all around, their shrimp tempura roll is incredible!!

Excellent dining experience. Honestly the only downfall I could find was the door opening and the cold temperature on my back as we were seated at the sushi bar and its unusually cold so not their fault! The manager was so sweet and kind, great conversation. So so attentive. Gourmet, high quality, creative dishes. Excellent presentation! Oh and don't miss the potty, special treat! Love their wine list.

service is always impeccable here from top to bottom. atmosphere is great. the two-person table behind the entrance wall is my favorite spot to sit in any restaurant. if you know you know. thats the spot right there.

Great experience and great food. Ordered the Kaisendon, food was exceptionally fresh, flavorful, and creative. Great place to try something new. Don't be afraid to put your faith in the chef(s) and order off the specialty menu.
One thing of note that is not exactly a negative, just something that the restaurant should make new customers aware of. The dining area is very small and close to being cramped. That coupled with fairly loud club-type music could make the experience less than ideal for someone with anxiety. I did not mind it, but I was surprised at how loud and congested the restaurant was. You have to weave through servers, hosts, managers, customers, and random partitions just to use the restroom.

Everyone was very kind and helpful. As for the food, outstanding! We got 2 rolls, lots of nigiri, and the yakisoba. Get the yakisoba!!! Wasn’t expecting it to be as good as it was but it’s a must order from now on. And great finish with the fried ice cream. We will be back!

Ok. We’re visiting from NYC so no strangers to good sushi, and this is some of the best we’ve had PERIOD. Extremely fresh and tasty, especially the fatty tuna and king salmon. Hearty servings too!
We were super lucky to be seated near Stefan, who while preparing this amazing sushi had time to make recommendations and generally absolutely make our night. Shout out to our server Annie as well who was incredibly attentive and accommodating (and recommended the fried red bean ice cream which perfectly capped our night). Don’t sleep on SHIKI!

We've been going to Shiki for at least 12 years and have never had a bad experience. While we don't live in Charleston, we're here at least once a month for the last 8 years. When we don't come by for a while, but then do, the owners always recognize us and greet us so warmly. Every place has off days from time to time, but Shiki is consistently great for us.

I ordered a huge takeout order for a group of my friends. They threw in everything in unlabelled boxes with different meats in the same box. Making it a dangerous game of "guess which sushi this is." A lot of my friends eat kosher and this was not fun and took an absorbent amount of time.
The food was great but also why imitation crab when you are on the coast?

Shiki Sushi has become our go-to spot for an unforgettable sushi experience. Highly recommended!

My husband and I have been dining at Shiki for many years, before you needed a reservation on a Friday night. And they have absolutely delighted us each and every time. The sushi, the service, and the ambiance are always top notch. The rolls are creative, with unexpected but delicious flavor combinations. Our faves are the lemon salmon roll, the special crunch roll, and the iso maki roll. The family that owns the restaurant is incredibly kind and have always treated us like we're family. This little gem is no longer a secret so you do need a reservation on a Friday now - but I promise it is worth the wait!

Ate here for lunch on a busy Thursday. Despite not having a reservation (not knowing one would be prudent), they were able to seat us at a small table on the other side of the bookcase by the door which was fine with us. Hubby ordered sushi while I ordered tempura not being a sushi lover. It's the first place we've been where you order tempura by the piece. The first order we placed was missing one of the vegetables and came out pretty quickly as did a 2nd order of shrimp with the missing vegetables. So fast that the sushi didn't come until I'd eaten all the tempura, sharing some with the hubs, of course. The tempura batter was very light and tasty - really enjoyed it.
When the sushi arrived, first thing hubs notices is that the rolls were not very tightly rolled and were coming apart when trying to pick them up. And that was the case with all 3 rolls ordered, sadly. Two of the rolls were supposed to be spicy but he really didn't notice any spice at all. As he would say, it was 'fine' but he wouldn't go back for the sushi.
Service was friendly and efficient.

Came here for a casual Wednesday night dinner, not only was the restaurant lively, but Madelyn, our server, was genuine in the positivity and kindness that radiated off of her!
Along with the service, the food was amazing. My boyfriend and I eat sushi A LOT and have been to lots of restaurants that boast fresh fish and good sushi and we both agree that the spicy yellowtail roll is one of the best rolls we’ve had yet. Simple, yet has a depth of flavor. The Spicy Green Mussels were also a new favorite of ours.
Parking was convenient as it’s right outside the restaurant for free which is rare in some areas of Charleston!

Shi Ki (4 seasons in Japanese) is our four season go-to place for sushi and other Japanese specialties. The lunch bento box is a bargain for what you get; a protein in cooked shredded cabbage, a scoop of rice, a small spring roll, a goodly portion of salad, and for dessert a half orange (very sweet). Price begins at about $11. In today's world it's a good price for the quality. The interior is small, so reservations are recommended. The ambiance is light, open, and decorated with Japanese themes. We think it truly five star.

Fish is fresh as usual. However I miss the laiback atmosphere at a typical small Japanese sushi restaurant . This becomes a busy overcrowded place. I sat at the bar and there was no interaction with the sushi chefs. They were busy making dish after dish. Great business for them but not for my experience.

Incredible food & service, best sushi in Charleston, but we had made a reservation and after our main course was cleared were asked by the host to close out & leave barely an hour after sitting to accommodate the “next reservation in line”— on a week night. Very sad to have that style of host service but again, absolutely loved the food and server—will recommend for that alone.

Unfortunately disappointing. I'd heard that their sushi was authentic, and my boyfriend is a big fan of sushi and Japanese dishes. We came on a Tuesday at 6:30, and were told the wait without a reservation would be about and hour and a half. We agreed as we weren't terribly hungry and took a walk around the neighborhood arriving back at 7:45. It was over an additional hour before they had a table available for us. The hostess was nice as was the waitstaff, but we were served two rolls that were meant for the table next to us. As this was our first experience, and we were unfamiliar with the rolls we didn't realize it. Our waitress only told us after we'd finished eating them completely. They then brought out the last three rolls out of the five that we'd ordered. We tasted each, and boxed them up as there was no way we could have eaten seven rolls on top of the two appetizers, and four nigiri we ordered. The flavors of everything we had were delicious, although many of the rolls fell apart once you picked them up. I was taken aback that they charged us for the two rolls they'd mistakenly served us, but we didn't want to make a scene as the couple next to us who had ordered them were very obviously on a first date. It was a disappointing experience on what we'd hoped would be a lovely rare date night for us. I don't think we'll be returning.

This was easily one of the best meals we’ve enjoyed in Charleston!
My husband and I enjoyed a variety of nigiri and it was truly a perfect meal made up of beautiful, fresh fish and well-balanced flavors.
We had the delight of sitting at the sushi bar in front of Chef James — he was very friendly and we enjoyed our conversation with him while watching him work his magic.
Shiki had a slightly more upscale atmosphere but in a very comfortable, relaxed way. Our server provided a perfect service, was also very friendly and offered great recommendations.
We can’t wait to return for another amazing meal at Shiki and highly recommend you do the same!

Sushi was some of the most fresh I have ever had and was so delicious that they don’t need to worry with all the extra add-ins and sauces like other sushi places. This is what sushi is supposed to be like. Minimal ingredients and amazing flavor. Sashimi and nagiri menu was long and a decent variety of sushi rolls but like I said, not a lot of ingredients in the rolls but they don’t need them. Service was great and attentive but we did go on a busy night and we ordered good bit of food so service took a bit longer but that’s on us.
If you have not been to Shiki, do yourself a favor and go!! Right now!

I went to Shiki for the first time a few weeks ago and was absolutely obsessed with it! We did the Omakase and the experience was incredible. Amazing service and the food was unreal with over 10 courses. We had a serious obsession with Shiki in the weeks following, ordering takeout multiple times a week and fantasizing about the next time we could go for another round of Omakase. When my mom scheduled a visit to town, it was the first reservation I made. Over 20 times we talked about how excited we were for this meal again. Immediately when when we arrived we were told that we would have to leave within an hour and 45 minutes. A lot of restaurants do this when they have back to back reservations especially in small spaces like shiki but it automatically kinda set an off mood. Especially couple with our server then greeting us with an attitude and condescending disposition. We explained what our experience was before and she was extremely nasty with snarky responses. From the get go, her demeanor put a damper on our highly anticipated evening. As the dinner continued, she became slightly more pleasant, but felt the need to continuously remind us that “this isn’t really what omakase is”— as if we don’t understand the concept of omakase— and essentially that we shouldn’t have done it this way. Keep in mind we just ordered a very expensive bottle of wine, and were spending multiples of what we would have if we had simply ordered off the menu as she suggested. I wish I could do it justice with my description, but her behavior and attitude is honestly so shocking it’s indescribable. I have never been treated so rudely by a server. She finally told us that it was our last dish at course 4…. Drastically less than what we received before and with less quality of fish. While everything we ate was amazing, we were unbelievably disappointed with the service, quantity of food, and overall experience especially considering how excited we were after the standard set at our last experience there. We asked for the manager to come over and talk to us and shortly after the chef and owner, James, spoke with us at length. He was so great— super patient, respectful, understanding, and friendly. He ultimately gave us a discount and was very apologetic which we really appreciated. Although we were disappointed overall with our experience, James was so great and handled it most perfectly and efficiently that I would continue to give my business to Shiki because of him. However, I will never return with the intention of dropping that amount of money again and will most likely opt to only get takeout instead of eating in to avoid disappointment again.

Awesomeness! In town for a quick trip and this place didn't disappoint! Great service and fresh food! The Maki roller was on point! This was a lunch visit, so it didn't go too crazy but I was allowed to photograph some great rolls see below. I was told it can get kinda busy at night, but Saturday aftn lunch was chill. Traditional Sushi restaurant.

Shiki is hands down the best sushi place in Charleston, SC. The fish is so fresh and the sushi is authentic while still having options for people who are first getting into sushi as a cuisine. The staff is so nice as well as the sushi chefs. The presentation of sushi is always so beautiful and the atmosphere overall is very welcoming. Beware of the reservation charges if you don’t show up! They’ll charge you if you don’t show.

We are in town for a short weekend trip. We love sushi and this place was recommended for a good sushi spot. Wow. It did not disappoint. The service was awesome in all aspects. (I can't remember our servers name). The food was AMAZING. We would drive 6 hours back just to eat here again.

I usually order Shiki on UberEATS and it is always so great. My dad was visiting and wanted sushi, and I knew that downtown had better sushi than West Ashley so I finally braved going downtown to eat it in person. It was so nice that Shiki had parking. Downtown is usually a nightmare and expensive to park at, and we didn't have to struggle with any of those things. Reservations were all full online, but on their website they say the accept walk-ins. We were able to get in right away at the bar. The chefs were very friendly, as well as the hostess, and all the waiters. Everyone made sure we okay throughout the night. They had the best sashimi I've had my whole life and I've lived in Seattle and DC (both great places for sushi, which Charleston isn't really known for. I had a friend warn me that Charleston didn't have good sushi and Shiki proved them wrong--there's at least one good sushi place). The sashimi literally melted in your mouth. I don't know how to describe it. It was so good. It tasted like heaven and I wanted it to never end. And they gave you a good amount for a decent price. All the rolls we got were amazing, especially the Cucumber Breeze. We also got the Sweet Potato roll--which should not be as good as it is. I dream about it sometimes. When I'm on UberEATS I like to add cream cheese to it. The Lemon Roll was very fresh. We accidently got the cucumber roll, but it was good too. A lot of sushi restaurants hide behind their rice or stuff their rolls with crab to hide the fact that they don't have good fish, but Shiki doesn't. For the appetizer we got the Hamachi Jalapeño, and they should sell their ponzu sauce in bottles. It was just a great experience and if you are looking for sushi, definitely come here.

One of our favorite sushi restaurants we've been to across the US. The sushi was excellent and the service was even better! Everyone there was so incredibly friendly and helpful, our waitress had the perfect suggestions for us. Definitely recommend, but make reservations as it gets busy early.

Phenomenal quality of fish, they always have specials too. Great sake selection, and the servers are super helpful. One of if not the best sushi places in Charleston.

This little gem is located in a small strip mall near Liberty Square and we had a great experience there. Their menu is quite extensive with a number of sushi and sashimi choices. They have a number of daily specials and a nice selection of traditional wine and sake. Victoria was our server and she was very nice and made some great recommendations. All the dishes we had were excellent and the sushi was fresh and delicious. We also had a tempura shrimp special which was excellent. If you want good sushi in Charleston, we would unequivocally recommend this establishment!

Don't get me wrong. This is a great place. It needs more seating space. Everything else is superb. I was pleasantly surprised by the staff diversity.

This is my favorite type of sushi experience: small, authentic restaurant with no-frill sushi. We got the boat of chef choice sushi and the chef just lets the fresh fish speak for itself. We didn't get a chance to try the regular rolls on the menu so we can't speak for those, but the ones on this particular boat didn't really add to the experience. Seemed more like an afterthought. We didn't mind that since there was a ton of fish for the price. Highly recommend!

We (2 people) didn’t have a reservation so we were first in the door when they opened for dinner at 5pm. They fortunately were able to seat us immediately despite not having any reservations able online, the restaurant quickly filled up shortly after opening. We enjoyed the sushi Love Boat. My wife and I really enjoyed it, we were comfortably full and were happy with the wide selection of fish offered. Would return again.

What an amazing experience. The atmosphere is very nice. It’s more traditional sushiya decor than the trendy Instagram pretty sushi spots that have become popular. Good sake selection! We sat at the sushi bar because we like to watch the chefs work.
Our server Annie was absolutely amazing. She answered all of our questions, made fantastic recommendations, and checked in on us in a timely manner that never felt intrusive.
Also, this place has the BEST uni I have ever had. Very fresh and clean tasting, with a hint of nuttiness at the end. I’m so happy we stopped here!

It's just ok. We wouldn't come back. They need creativity with their rolls.

Oh man, sushi. If you like it, this is a great place. If you don't, there's other stuff on the menu that I've never tried. Why? There's sushi! And it's delicious.
If you're adventurous and/or indecisive, get the omakase option, where they pick your food for you. They do that sort of thing in Japan, and it's a great way to broaden your horizons. They will ask if there's anything you won't eat, but where's the fun in that?

Insanely good for being state side. Compares very well to the sushi in Japan.

Make a reservation and make sure your reservation is for the correct number, as you will not be able to get in if you try to add to it. That's how we got in. We didn't have a reservation, but the group in front of us tried to bring one more person than their reservation was for and could not be seated. They also had to pay the $25 late cancelation fee even though we were lucky enough to get their spot. It is very much worth it!!! The staff was all super friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! It tasted very fresh and delicious! We even tried Uni for the first time. I would suggest you not ordered the 2 rolls if you do not like seaweed as it was a bit overpowering of the sea urchin. Other than that, it was great. We mentioned that to our waiter, and he thanked us for our (polite) critique!

Number 1 spot for Sushi in downtown Charleston. Pricey, but worth every penny. Freshest fish I've had in a long time.
