Fun fusion place with tacos, sushi, and sake. Cheese steak taco was worth it, surf and turf sushi roll with "wagyu" and lobster was tasty but not worth the $35 price. Hot sake was good and things came out in a reasonable time. Churro donut and chocolate sauce also a treat.

Not worth the price.
Stopped in after being recommended. Madison was our server and she was very nice. We ordered the chips and queso, the chips were refilled and we were given a large amount of queso. Wouldn’t say it was worth the $11 We tried the lobster Rangoon roll and a specialty roll. The lobster roll was good but towards the end you look for that freshness of a cold roll. My fiance liked the speciality but wouldn’t order it again.

Fun fusion place! Loved the chicken, shrimp and veg tacos. Sushi was fresh and some of the best I have had so far! Margaritas are great. The only thing was that the music was way too loud. Maybe if the volume comes down, it will be more enjoyable to eat the food.

This was the BEST food I’ve had in a while. I’m not easy to impress when it comes to my food. I LOVE GOOD, flavorful, hot food. I would have never thought to eat tacos with sushi but it was so good. I had the barbacoa tacos with the Tsumani sushi roll. If I wouldn’t have had both, I definitely would’ve had more than one taco. The FLAVORS!! My Lord. This place was a whole vibe. My friend and I got a little dressed up since we were visiting the area. Allie, our server, provided great service. She was polite, attentive and her suggestions were spot on. Not to mention the drinks 🍹 sealed the deal. Great experience! I will definitely be back in the fall.

Very cool spot with a fun twist on sushi. Service was great. Will was working the service bar and took great carer of us. We each had a Topo Chico Ranch water and shared a veggie roll . Both were amaze. This wasn't on our list of places to go to but will definitely be coming back next time we are in town.

We had a reservation and there was a wait. To compensate for the longer than expected wait time, an employee walked us over to another bar next door (same owner) and served us champagne, chips and salsa for free. When we finally were seated, we were greeted immediately and food and drinks came out fast. Service was exceptional and also the music was bumping!!! Highly recommend this place!

I tried the Barbacoa braised beef nachos. I saw a picture online and I really wanted it. It was underwhelming. It was tender. However, the meat lacked seasoning. What I was served looked nothing like the picture I saw online. The queso with nachos and chorizo was delicious. I had the patriots point sushi roll. It was supposed to have seared salmon. The salmon was raw and not seared.

With local friends. This place is apparently owned by celebrities and serves Mexican and Japanese sushi. The 3 who ordered sushi loved it, my taco was good but overpriced. The house margarita is a pass. The tequila old fashioned was good. Overall, not spectacular, not the worst place in Charleston. There are so many places it’s hard to compare but this would not be a favorite if we come back.

Cool concept and the tacos, guacamole, and chips were great. The sushi was just average and nothing better than an all you can eat sushi bar. Service was average. Average restaurant. Much better options in the area. Nothing negative about the place - just nothing special - average, but expensive for average.

Got a 4 roll sushi platter and every single one was delicious. We got the Dynamite, Rainbow, Tiger, and Mesu rolls… YUM. This is some of my favorite sushi I’ve had in Charleston. It is a little pricey, but absolutely worth it. The staff here is extremely attentive which was great. I will most definitely be back!

Came here based on stars however sushi are tasteless with dry rice and bland flavor especially for a $35 waguy roll. Ve been to many places and would pay $8-$13 dollars for these kid of rolls max. Further to this they charge 11% tax and an additional $4 processing fee of your check. Tip suggestions are 22%, 30% and 35% for bar service ) OUTRAGEOUS

OMG! the food here was amazing!!! Braised Beef tacos talk about tender beef!! Absolutely best. The wagyu tacos falling apart steak.. tasty!! Lobster ragoon the best fried sushi with the right crunch. The street corn skewers were the perfect way to start. This place definitely deserves a five a star review. The service the food the drinks hands down the best on king street!!

The food was actually horrid. We got the bau buns which were extremely fatty and the shell tasted like fried yuckiness. The chips and guac was not the greatest either, the chips were super thin and had weird seasoning on them and the guac was like an avocado spread that lacked flavor. The tiger roll was pretty trash too, it had weird sauce on it and the salmon was very low quality. Then the dynamite roll was pretty gross too, unnecessarily spicy and bad flavor. On to the tacos, the A5 Wagyu Philly taco was actually really good, the meat was solid and the queso was good. But, the Baja fish taco might’ve been the worst thing to ever enter my mouth in my whole existence. It’s almost as if the fish was a year old and honestly just did not taste like fish at all. Additionally, the cost of everything was way overpriced, money wasted. Overall, the food was tremendously disgusting, the vibe was very loud and quite annoying, and lastly the service was alright, nothing to complain about the service.

Very VERY loud. Large groups took over the place. Food was good. Waitservice fair. Bar service very good. Waited 25 min for our table reservation to be stuck in front of emergency door exit. Likely wont return. It's unfortunate because when we went a few years ago, we had an excellent experience.

Unfortunately we weren't able to enjoy our meal there due to an unforeseen medical situation. We made reservations on Friday for Saturday evening, we immediately canceled our reservation on Saturday morning EARLY. Still got hit with a cancellation fee for the 7 people.Have made several attempts and left messages for someone to call and discuss this matter but no one seems willing to call for some reason. The real kicker about this, our daughter was actually able to go with a friend of hers that night and left very positive remarks on Instagram and had thousands of likes. I’ve heard great things about this restaurant and was looking forward to our dinner there with friends. It’s just sad that no one has the courage to return a phone call or text and discuss the matter. At least we know the servers and cooks do a great job, management, not so much.
***Update(5/17/24), was able to finally speak with someone and they are refunding the cancellation fee! Thank you.**

This place is amazing, especially for bachelorette's and birthday's. They brought out drinks for our friends who were celebrating a bday and a bachelorette and played music for them and let them bang the gong with a drum! The server was super friendly, gave us passes to skip the line at nearby clubs and when the kitchen messed up an order of sushi rolls, they gave us the messed up one for free and brought out the correct one super quickly. 10/10 service, and really good food and prices!

We went to Mesu for my birthday dinner and had the best experience. Our waitress Madison was so kind and really made me feel special on my birthday! I'm truly disappointed to report that our celebratory dinner at Mesu, intended as a special occasion for my wife's birthday, was tarnished by the surprisingly inhospitable conduct from the management. Despite spending over $500 on what was undeniably delicious food—encompassing appetizers, a variety of dishes, drinks, and desserts—the evening was overshadowed by an unexpected and rather rude interaction as we finished our dessert.
Without any prior indication on our reservation, the manager approached us, informing us that our table was reserved for only one hour and fifteen minutes, a policy that was neither mentioned at the time of booking nor at any point during our meal. He bluntly told us we had overstayed, with people waiting for our table. This abrupt announcement was both shocking and demeaning, especially considering the nature of our visit and the considerable amount we had spent.
When I confronted him to express our displeasure, noting the absence of any such time restrictions stated during the booking process and the absurdity of enforcing such a limit on a $500 meal, his response was dismissively matter-of-fact. His lack of empathy and unwillingness to accommodate a peaceful resolution to the situation only further dampened what should have been a joyous celebration.
His parting words, upon hearing we wouldn't be returning, were a nonchalant "that's fine." It was clear that customer satisfaction was not on the agenda at [Restaurant Name]. It’s regrettable that the manager's behavior starkly contrasted with the quality of the food and the otherwise pleasant ambiance of the establishment.
For those looking for a restaurant where the experience matches the quality of the menu and where guests are treated with the respect they deserve, especially when celebrating a special occasion, I suggest looking elsewhere. We certainly expected more from Mesu.

The food is great - the management is horrible. We went for a birthday dinner with a party of 6. At 1 hour and 30 minutes we were asked to leave, because we had been there longer than 1 hour and 15 min. Nowhere on the reservation or the website does it state a time limit on the table. We ordered several appetizers, multiple rounds of drinks, 6 meals, and 2 desserts. Our total bill was over $500 and we were asked to leave. After talking to the manager, he was indifferent about there not being a posted time limit. We were a quiet, easy table, spending quite a bit of money. We will absolutely not be back, and would have picked a different place to enjoy a birthday dinner with friends had we known. When we said “we will not be coming back” he simply said “that’s fine”.

Disappointing. I had high hopes based on rating and reviews, but it was very mediocre food. The guacamole was fine, the chips greasy and over seasoned. The sushi roll was sloppy, not fresh tasting, and surprisingly bland. I love the Mexican/Japanese concept, but I would save your money and go to a restaurant that does one of the two very well.

Overall just not impressed. Went here for a work function and was quite disappointed. I had expected more considering all the hype about the place. The food was terrible, sushi was some of the worst I’ve had. I had really wanted to enjoy this place but sadly I did not. The quality of food was extremely poor considering the price you’re charged. I’ve been to other sushi restaurants in the area that have been far better. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Visiting Charleston over the weekend and staying across from Mesu. Decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. I had the tacos, fish and pork, both were hot, fresh and tasty. My wife had the Bao Buns, they were so tasty we got a couple to go! Drinks were well prepared, service was fabulous.

Went here for a retirement party. The service was amazing but the place was kinda cramped. The prices were definitely not fitting for the taste and or quality of food. It seems to me people in SC don’t know what good food is and yet still clamor to pay stupid ridiculous prices for subpar food. The jerk wing sauce tasted watered down. The salsa was almost certainly out of a can. The tuna tar tar was garbage. The rolls we ordered were certainly not worth the 32 and 20 dollar price tag. The drinks were also ridiculously priced. I suggest going to any other sushi place to get sushi. Can’t say anything about the tacos taste but from the looks of it you could go anywhere else for better.

Way overpriced for the service, food, and drinks that they have at Mesu. We went for a birthday dinner and the restaurant was underwhelming on all aspects. I've lived in Charleston for 4 years now and have been wanting to try this place but the sushi was below average in taste for the price you're paying. The main reason why I won't be returning is the service. For a party of 6+ people, they automatically charge 25% tip. I understand 20%, but if you're charging 25%, I would expect the service to be above and beyond. Our waters were never refilled, we had to flag our waitress down multiple times, we didn't receive half of the drinks originally ordered and had to repeat what we had requested, and were never checked on after the plates were delivered in case we needed anything else. The service was minimal at best, yet we were charged 25%. If you like sushi fusion - there are other places in and around Charleston that are better.

Good was great , server was good not excellent but good, but the atmosphere for me was a let down, I was there to celebrate my best friend's birthday and I wasn't able to talk to him because the music was so loud we had to scream to each other, also I was constantly being bumped by servers and clients, because the space is so limited.

This place struck me odd at first, sushi and Mexican? Bu, my wife ordered the brazed beef taco and said it was amazingly good. Even better, I ordered the rainbow sushi and I have to say, it was absolutely awesome! I’ve eaten a lot of sushi in my life and the man who made this has some serious skills! Kudos to the service and food, this restaurant is a must and don’t let the mexican/sushi mix draw skepticism, the food is GREAT!!

Good place for anyone is contemplating on which cuisine should eat as this restaurant serves Mexican and Japanese food.
We ordered some Bao Bun as appetizers. Pretty good with juicy meat and veggie on top. Sashimi platter has 15 pieces of fish they had that time. Fresh but not as fresh as some other places I had tried but still good. The restaurant locates on king street so I got King Street rolls which has raw fish on top and shrimp tempura in between. Recommend to try this dish. Crunchy and freshy :)
We got one each of every type of tacos- so we got beef, chicken, braised beef, fish, shrimp, pork tacos. I like beef one, and fish tacos. I think their tacos are good because of veggie pickles (?) on top.

Average at best. Seemed to be more show than substance. We all had MX and it was not any different than what you would get anywhere else. We stopped by for a few drinks at the bar and possibly dinner. We both had the house margarita (doubles). Both not good. Chips and salsa and guacamole were also low quality. Total bill: $70 after tip.
Recap: 2 margaritas and chips with salsa and guacamole were $70. Only thing that redeemed this place was the music. Bartender was nice as well. I rate this restaurant 2 stars. Not sure why it’s rated any higher by others.

The sushi was good, nothing really special. Infusion menu with Mexican and sushi. The seating hostess seemed annoyed, not friendly. Our table was in a terrible place. At the bar next to the kitchen, servers station and this gong that people who were there celebrating something would go over and hit this gong. It felt like we were in a night club with the noise, people yelling and music so loud. And the kitchen staff wasn't quiet about anything. We had to listen to them complain and yell nonstop. Don't recommend for couples but probably fun for big groups.

We had walked away from another local sushi restaurant when we found mesu! We were immediately taken back with how welcoming the environment felt, from a bright smile from Lauren as soon as we opened the door to seeing servers dance to the good music behind the bar! We love coming into an environment where we see that the workers are treated well because we can be happy because they’re happy. When we first walked in, we were pretty disappointed with the business around the corner, but Lauren made sure to step up and change her whole facial expressions around. There was a review sheet left in our bill, and she tried not taking credit for Hargrett service I hope the boss and customers know how great of a worker she is and if anyone deserves a raise it’s her! We got the surf and turf and rainbow sushi rolls. They were both absolutely phenomenal. The chef was new apparently and he’s doing a great job. There’s not one thing I would change and that’s very hard to achieve. Overall, we will definitely be back!

Started with a house margarita, excellent. Followed it with chips, salsa and guacamole. Both sides were very flavorful. Salsa lacked any salt 🧂 but the guacamole 🥑 had more than its share.
We had the pork carnitas nachos and the barbacoa braised beef tacos 🌮. Both excellent.
Placed was well cooled considering the summer heat. Music tended to be to loud for me. Disappointed ☹️ they didn’t have a sushi 🍱 sampler. At least I didn’t see it.
Looking 👀 forward to visiting again.

I’m going to keep it super simple. Take-sushi-off-your-menu.
That was probably by far the worst nigiri I have ever had and it was not fresh. Rice was dry, pieces were over cut, all fish had an odor, and made me sick afterwords.
Some things should be separate.. in this case quesadillas and sushi. Also $150 for two rolls and nigiri was way overpriced.

Their chips and roasted red pepper salsa are unique and very tasty! Our entrees were also amazing and we both had food leftover we could not eat. Service was also fantastic. This is a great spot for dinner - especially if not everyone loves seafood. We had a delicious meal including sushi, tacos, taquitos, salsa, guacamole, and cocktails. The atmosphere is energetic and the art is awesome. What really makes Mesu great, though, is the staff. They must deal with a lot, being in such a central location, but everyone was friendly, funny, and gave great service. We definitely recommend sitting at the bar for a double feature of sushi-making and cocktail acrobatics. Also, the sushi rolls with market fish are so fresh and delicious; don't skip them!

Really enjoyed it, music was a little loud for dinner though
Visited 2 years ago
Interesting concept, the food is decent but honestly it's super overpriced for what it is. Especially the sushi rolls $20+ for anything pretty much. Covered in sauce and random flavors. $8 tacos. The market price nigiri for 10 rolls was $55 which is just crazy. I don't know if this is in line with Charleston prices I'm not from the area but it isn't in line with what I'm used to.
Bartenders are great very friendly, so is the service. And the build your own margarita/selection is good.

This was very underwhelming and pretty disappointing. We stopped by the restaurant for dinner so soon as we made it into town and asked the hostess if we could have a table for two to sit with our pup outside. She said that was fine sat us and didn’t mention having a waiter or a server. So after about 10-12 minutes of pondering we went back in and asked her if we needed to order at the bar or if we would have a server. She told us to order at the bar. So we put together our list of appetizers, entrees and drinks and went to order at the bar… at this point the bartender told us we should have a server and he would send one out. Eventually she came and we were able to order our food and drink. We had chips, a quesadilla, the wings a sushi roll. The guac was flavorless, the sushi basically was rice and siracha, the quesadilla had $8 worth of chorizo added and on two of the 4 slices it was only cheese… oh and the wings were dry. All in all we expected our dinner to be pricey knowing where we were but the combination of slow service and underwhelming food certainly should not have cost us $100…. 4+ stars… be careful

Mesu has both amazing tacos and sushi! Nathan was my bartender and absolutely crushed it! The only thing that rivaled the amazing food was his killer mustache! 10/10. Can’t wait to go back

I hate to give a bad review but I didn’t have a great experience here. The service was slow considering how every table was not filled and it is a small restaurant. My party was sat at 7:30 and didn’t get our entrées until 8:40. The chips and queso app looked good on the menu but there was some weird sort of seasoning on top of them which wasn’t great. The sushi was fine nothing special. There are much better restaurants which are sushi based or mexican on king st with better service.

Overpriced with small serving sizes. Quality food but don't expect to fill up without paying a fortune! Barbacoa nachos seemed to be the best option as far as price/amount of food. Tacos are tiny.

I felt the food was super overpriced for what you get; we ordered 2 apps and 2 drinks and had a tab of $75. We got the street corn which was still on the cobb???, and the tuna tataki which was just ok.
Whatever you do at this restaurant- absolutely do not sit at the sushi bar. It is an awkward height and gets a ton of foot traffic from servers due to how the restaurant is designed. People (at no fault of their own) were constantly bumping into us and apologizing as they were getting around the restaurant. Due to the height of the bar there is nowhere organic for you to look when you're not looking at your companion so you kind of feel like you're in timeout lol.
We made a reservation and were there for a special occasion which was also noted in the res, we left after the apps because it was just not an enjoyable experience at all sadly. This place looks really cool online but in person it really lacked substance imo.
Service was EXCELLENT, server was super nice and attentive!

Cool decor (love Shepherd Ferry), fresh sushi, and tasty drinks. But one of the most overpriced spots I’ve ever been. Charged $9 to add 5 medium shrimp to our taco salad

We were visiting from Denver and came across Mesu via an online search I found on 8 of the best Charleston restaurants. Let’s be honest, there are more than 8 but Mesu definitely deserved to be on the list! I would never think that a restaurant serving both Japanese and Mexican cuisine existed. In my opinion, if you can do both well, then go for it. Don’t miss out on the skewer street corn as appetizers. Order a few. You will be fighting over them. The pico shrimp tacos and Fried Pork Carnitas Clothespin Tacos were oh-so-good. My daughter had the quesadilla and the mix of cheeses they used was delicious. The margarita? Awesome! I read some of the negative reviews but let’s be honest. Everybody comes in with different expectations and taste palates. Let’s just say anyone who gives their food a negative review - I won’t be eating out with them. Ever. The decor was fab with all of the art and can you say KAWS? 😍. Look it up and you’ll see these (most likely) limited edition figures displayed for your eyes only. FYI… the music can be a bit loud for people who don’t dig the music or loud anything. I thought the music was great though. Next time we’re out there, we’ll be back at Mesu. Great job with this restaurant!

Quality food. Authentic flavors. Amazing service. Fast kitchen.
We had such a nice dinner of tacos and sushi. I know, it's not a typical combination, but this unique restaurant knows how to do both with excellence.

Delicious appetizers + drinks, with friendly staff and fun art. A great spot to sit at the bar and catch a game, or to grab a table and enjoy a delicious meal. Loved it! Don’t miss the Build Your Own Marg option — the spicy margaritas are some of the best I’ve had!
