Clarke Cooke House is the quintessential Newport experience. Local Seafood, Steaks, Sushi, Traditional New England Fare w/an Asian/French Flare.
We had a great dinner here! Open air, nice vibe, however it does get quite loud. We really enjoyed the summer sushi, some oysters, and the red snapper special. The chocolate dessert that comes in the wine glass was so amazing that we came back a second time for it during our vacation. It gets very busy here, so I recommend making a dinner reservation if you want to get in!

Dining at Clarke Cooke House our first night in Newport set an incredibly high bar for the rest of our trip. We began with mussels, served with irresistibly hot, freshly baked bread straight from the oven. For our main courses, we shared the seafood linguine and the seasonal scallop special, both showcasing the freshest, most flavorful seafood. We enjoyed our meal with a picturesque view of the water where there was a nearby boat covered in Christmas lights making me very merry.

During our recent lunch visit to Clarke Cooke House in Newport, Rhode Island, we were initially impressed by the charming atmosphere, vibrant crowd, and prime location. The menu appeared promising, sparking our anticipation for a delightful meal.
However, our experience quickly took a downturn. Our waiter was noticeably cold and unfamiliar with the menu, unable to provide insights or address dietary queries for my vegan friend. When asked about milk options, he admitted to not knowing.
We placed our order, and my ham sandwich was supposed to come with a side of fries. Unfortunately, the food took 30 minutes to arrive, and my fries were missing. Despite my efforts to catch the waiter’s attention, he seemed to ignore me. Another staff member eventually brought the fries 10 minutes later, but they were cold by the time they reached our table.
To make matters worse, my friend felt unwell after eating the pesto pasta and had to leave early, later experiencing severe discomfort and vomiting.
While Clarke Cooke House has potential with its promising menu and great atmosphere, our lunch experience was marred by poor service and food issues. We hope our next visit will be more positive, but it’s hard to overlook the disappointments we faced this time.

Such a classic beautiful destination for a lovely dinner, too bad their food didn't quite live up to the expectation. I have always enjoyed it in the past, however my experience this time was disappointing.
Started with a great martini, mussels were ok, out of the eight I had, four were gritty upon eating & the broth was good, just not great. Tuna carpaccio was really good, but just 4 very small pieces. My wife's chicken was fine, but not noteworthy. My special Bavette Steak, which I ordered medium, specifically engaging the waiter on if that meant slightly pink, which he confirmed....arrived rare to raw & we sent it back(wish I took a pic of that). Upon returningit to our table, it was evident that they literally threw it under the broiler & burned the life out of it..."where am I dining again "?...Dennys? Who makes that decision to do this in such a fine dining establishment? We of course sent it back. For the record, we are not of the ilk to send food back. Management did come to our table saying they would re-make the dish...too late. My buddy's steamed Halibut was very good.
Our two deserts Creme Brule & chocolate bomb were also very good.
Regardless of my food experience, we had a wonderful night & enjoyed the ambiance there, that you really can't duplicate elswhere.

I’m a resident of Newport. I have eaten at the Clarke Cooke house many times. Last night was a huge disappointment. Yes, it was NYE and they were extremely busy. Drinks came out quickly and were great. The Pate’ appetizer was superb. I order the rack of lamb. Medium. The lamb arrived raw. Not rare -raw. The waiter realized as he was serving me that the meat was undercooked and immediately apologized and return the food to the kitchen. 15 minutes later a different waiter brought the plate back, still raw. Our waiter was attentive and realized the food was not cooked. He took it off our bill immediately and offered something else. At this point my dinner companions were done and there was no point in ordering a new meal. I brought the undercooked meal home and in the light of my kitchen realized just how seriously undercooked it was. In addition the meat was poorly trimmed and extremely fatty. The menu price for the lamb was $62. A wholesale price for that rack is about $12. Shame on you Chef.

Was told it was one of the quintessential Newport places to check out. Glad we went but doesn't seem to stand out food wise for what you pay and compared to other places. It was a Newport experience but not something I need to go back to.

I dined here today for the first time, after being recommended the location from a relative who had joined us. First of all, my husband was asked to remove his boston scaly hat very aggressively by our waiter as soon as we sat down (even though the hat is considered a formal accessory and he paired it with dress shoes and a blazer coat). My husband obeyed and quickly removed it. Although the owner sat in the same room as us, with sneakers on which obviously contradicts there smart casual wear rule. Therefore apparently they’ll pick and choose what they allow you to wear based on who you are (specifically by your ethnicity or appearance). The service was very peculiar, we were being watched the entire time by many staff members in a very eerie way, which made us feel very unwelcome. My family and I are of middle eastern and hispanic descent therefore I’m not sure if that is the reason we were all followed to the bathrooms! When the server approached us several times as we exited the bathroom he didn’t give us a reason why he followed us (the bathroom is located on the upper floor where the third dining room was closed). Therefore if you are not white be prepared to get followed to the bathrooms and questioned why you went there and where you are going. What confirmed to me that this location was racist was when I looked at the dessert menu and read “Indian pudding” when the pudding does not have Indian roots but Native American roots! The name of this pudding is improper and offensive and needs to be updated asap. Due to the atmosphere, service and treatment I am not sure if I would come back here and I would also warn others of our experience unless this location and the staff updates their outdated mentality and menu titles.

Tried canceling a reservation and couldn’t do it without downloading the Resy app. That is such BS. So I called the restaurant before I was forced to do that and no one answered. The message says the person is not taking calls. So then, I went onto the Clarke Cooke house website to find an email to share my frustration. Wouldn’t you know, no such option. Love this place but the total disrespect for my patronage is very obvious. I’ll go somewhere else for now. I hope that you dump Resy and go to OpenTable. Resy is not doing anything good for your brand and by not answering your phone, neither are you.

Wow, a top New York City type restaurant in Newport. Forget the losers comments from years ago. Dress like you’re going first class. Atmosphere here is awesome…2nd floor is special. Drinks are reasonable and delicious. Our server PATRICK WAS AMAZING. They explain specials and drinks. Most attentive and all foods were perfectly presented. Wanna another drink, ask and within 2 minutes it’s there. We had wild mushrooms and salmon that were incredible as appetizers. Caesar salad was fresh and lettuce crisp. Scallops special had my wife shaking her head. My seafood linguine was overflowing with fresh seafood. The dessert of “Snowball from Hell” can be shared. Our 54th anniversary was unreal. THANK YOU Park next door in Moorings lot.

A must for every time we visit Newport. The food is always delicious. We had lunch for the first time here today, and we weren't disappointed. Clam chowder is awesome. Plenty of clams with every spoonful and very creamy. The burger is fantastic. The wait staff is attentive and very friendly and helpful. Was usually a dinner spot for us but now lunch will have to be a regular as well.

I hate leaving this place two stars because the food and the atmosphere is wonderful. My sister made a reservation for dinner tonight and informed the host that she was adding two adults and a baby to the reservation, to which the restaurant replied that we were all set. Upon our arrival, we were told that they do not have high chairs for babies. They told us we would have to sit my baby on my lap for the duration of the dinner (my son is one year old and squirmy as heck). We were also sat at a TINY table with four chairs even though our reservation was technically for 5, especially if they knew they don’t have high chairs. Luckily, we had a clip on baby chair in the car that my husband ran to grab, but our table was extremely cramped. No one really seemed apologetic about this, which was even more frustrating. My son is an angel and was very well behaved during the dinner regardless, but it was a very tight space and we had to get creative. The food and drinks were excellent, but we started out on a very sour note with this issue. I’m leaving this review so that other families making dinner reservations are aware of this!

Upon a surprise birthday trip to Newport and discovering that it was Restaurant week…. We tried to get reservations At the Clarke Cook house for dinner, But to no avail… However, we did attend Sunday brunch and what an amazing meal we had. Start to finish. Amazing cocktails the best clam chowder that I’ve ever had and trust me. I tried many during our vacation. Our server was pleasant and perfectly timed each course and although this was our first trip to Newport we will be returning and we will make sure that we have our reservations secured before our arrival!

Made reservations 1 month out….for middle of October, to take my wife out for her birthday. Was given a 2 top where we were able to have people from the bar literally standing over our table as we ate. Not the people at the bars fault, the man at the front said there were no other tables available, the two tables were vacant our entire dinner. The guy at the front was rude and the young lady assisting him was amazing. He should learn how to run a front end of a restaurant. Food was ok waiter was great at his job.

Downright horrible. Do not go here if you are looking to be treated like a human. stuck up bartender. Went out of their way to make a young woman, traveling alone for work, feel uncomfortable. I wasn’t greeted by a single staff member, other than the snippy bartender (both when i walked in and when i left). I didn’t even finish my wine, wanted desert and a few drinks. Left after half a glass of wine.

Not only does the restaurant smell worse than chum rotting in a lobster cage, but the staff and attitudes are rude, aggressive and make you feel unwelcome. I travel to many places and am also a contributing copy writer for Aruba - Caribbean magazines. I am well versed in the service industry of hospitality and management. Safety tip:
Safety wise we were upstairs and I'm not sure our windows opened so incase of a fire or emergency it is good to know where all stairs cases are and where they lead to and if you can use the windows in the womens bathroom to escape (i would) it's not that far of a jump
The front of the restaurant is completely open concept, so once your down stairs you are in the clear - @iamjazztheceo (all socials)

Ongelooflijk

I've eaten here 5x in the last 2 1/2 years and last night will be the final time. I ordered the special, snapper with rice, etc., and although it tasted good I got sick as a sick dog this morning. That's the 3rd time I've been sick from eating food here. Granted I have a sensitive stomach so if you do too you might avoid this place. Maybe it's a dirty kitchen-I don't know, but there is no question, in my opinion, that something gets into the food that shouldn't.

I have to say she was very impressed with the ambiance, quality of care I was given, and the amazing quality of food, which I have to say was beautifully presented. Definitely when I come back to Newport this will be my first stop. Lastly, Patrick was very engaging, professional, and had great recommendations on the menu items. Hands down amazing restaurant for drinks or intimate dinners.

Clarke Cooke House in Newport, Rhode Island, is a popular spot, especially on weekends in the summer, so reservations are a must. I visited with a group of five on a Saturday in August, and it was packed. I ordered the mussels in a white wine garlic sauce, which were delicious, paired with the petite frites. However, my mother-in-law had a less-than-ideal experience with the salmon toast; they were out of cream cheese and charged her extra to substitute grilled onions, which didn't go over well. The rest of the group enjoyed their meals. While the prices are on the higher side, it’s expected for Newport. The location is fantastic, but the interior is a bit tight, especially during busy times. Overall, it's a nice spot to visit, just be prepared for some trade-offs.

The most disappointing part of my visit tonight was the young, blonde male bartender who is extremely rude. Good atmosphere in the wharf but sadly this food is pretty awful. We snagged a 5pm res and hoped the kitchen wouldn’t be super busy. Mussels are pretty standard especially in a beach town and the broth looked and tasted like dishwater. The steak frites were also charred and if I had to guess the fries came out of a frozen bag. We also ordered from the raw bar (normal) and brussel sprout caesar salad which was basically raw shaved Brussels with a slice of parm on top. A friend from Newport and another frequent visitor recommended this place but for the price I would say grab a quick lobster roll and go to a nice steakhouse when you get back home.

RUDEST AND MOST UNPROFESSIONAL MANAGER.
I had called to make reservations two months prior and was never asked which restaurant I was booking a table with (every floor is a different "restaurant"), but the guy on the phone told me there’s a dress code and for men to wear a collared shirt and jacket. Assuming I had made reservations for the upscale spot, I called the day of to confirm to make sure we were dressed accordingly. The man on the phone (manager, I assume) said “You don’t know which restaurant you booked with?” To which I said “No, that’s why I’m calling to confirm”
His response??? “UNBELIEVABLE”
I was stunned. I couldn’t believe he was talking to a customer like this. I asked him what was unbelievable and that I didnt appreciate his attitude and he told me he had a long day and lots of people calling and he’s fed up with people calling him to confirm which restaurant they’ve reserved with. No apology whatsoever.
I had to speak to him like he was a child and told him that no matter how hard his day was he should never speak to a customer like that. Still no apology from him.
My husband called back after because I was so stunned and upset at the attitude I received from a restaurant and the manager gave him an even WORSE attitude, trying to put up a verbal fight.
I have no words for this behavior. I have never in my life been treated this way from an establishment. I called to simply confirm where my reservation was booked with, and the manager of this restaurant treated me like I was scum.

First - while making a reservation two mos in advance and being told if we didn’t cancel 24 hours in advance we would get charged on the credit card $25 per person. Then to be given a 9:15 reservation and squashed into the bar table in tatty directors chairs which everyone passing bumped into while bar flies hung over our table. We asked if our reservation wasn’t for the dining room and why we’re in this crowded bar room. The host Patrick came over and schmoozed us aske we if we have ever been there and if we lived there. Then said he would try to see if there was anyone leaving the second floor dining room and he would reseat us. Asked us what we wanted to drink and said he would buy us a drink to make up for the bad table. He came back to tell us there was no other tables to change us to. We got our drinks ordered apps and dinner and a bottle of wine. The food was very good. When the bill came the drinks were on it. Patrick was gone and we were furious. The place is huge crowded and I’m sure there were other places to sit. Three floors of tables. The band moved in across from us. Well I couldn’t wait to get out of there. Maybe we did not look like we warranted good treatment. Maybe Patrick is a fool. Maybe if you are not from Newport or look like you are from Newport you shouldn’t go to Clarke Cooke house. Our money was green. Check your behavior Patrick.

Very rude manager, lackluster food. Go somewhere else.
My wife and I visited Newport for my birthday this year and after hearing so much about the Clarke Cooke house, we made reservations 2 months before dining here last night..
The food was okay, the atmosphere was fun, but our experience with a young man who apparently manages the restaurant was inexcusable and distasteful.
No matter how successful a restaurant is, there is no room for disrespecting your patrons. I don’t know his name or what his real title is, but I urge this establishment to expect much higher standards for the words and actions of their employees.
From the amount of bad reviews I’ve seen echoing my sentiment, I doubt this restaurant will make any personnel changes. losers.

We sat outside with no an issues! The hostess was rude when trying to make reservations this time and I’m going to have to say he was being judge for having tattoos. Not only did that happen, but she messaged the girl at The Black Pearl. Fortunately for us she wasn’t smart enough to talk quietly to her coworker and we heard her. What a shame!

I’ve been coming to this restaurant with my mom for a number of years and always had a great experience. Unfortunately I had to rate it a 3 star and 3 for service because the bartender I had that I normally love ripped me off today when I visited by myself. Not only did he charge me more for my salad than what the lunch menu said but he also charged me $30 for what I thought was a white sangria that I saw a few people order and it looked refreshing and was curious to try it. Never did he once warn me of the price and verify if I still wanted to order it. When I got the bill I was in for a very bad surprise. I’m aware this place is pricey but the quality of this drink ranged anywhere from $12-$18 much similar to the Bloody Mary I ordered prior. Never once have a come here and been charged that much for a drink before. Unfortunately a lot of the drink “names” are not the stereotypical “sangria” “Bloody Mary” so you understand your tab when you’re ready to pay. It felt sketchy and felt he made a mistake but he insisted my drink was $30 despite not giving me a fair warning of the outrageous price for a drink that wasn’t even that good. Word of advice - Do not get “Newport Water”, because unfortunately the bartenders don’t at least give you the courtesy of informing you of how much it is before going through it and I’d probably advise to ask how much things cost before ordering. Sadly it seems to have come to that, I don’t think I will be back there for awhile because I feel cheated and it was a huge disappointment.

It was a beautiful sunny day and I asked to be moved to the lower dining room (where there was multiple tables available) and was told these were reservations only.... yeah I had one of them! Very strange experience we were dressed very nice and respectful. The staff did not treat us politely and acted like we were wrong to ask to be moved to a table we reserved. Also, what made this bad enough to write a 1 star review was that the man in front of us checking in with the host didn't have a reservation and was put in one of the tables we had reserved and didn't get...not sure what he did to get that table! Food was not great but atmosphere is very nice it is a shame!

On my first trip to Newport solo I wandered into the Clarke Cooke House, miraculously guided by the spirits of the sea. There was a welcoming vibe from the git-go, a knowing aura. The attention to detail was evident in every encounter from the host, to the young yet professional bartenders to the waiters and the kitchen. Did I mention the food? The freshest oysters? The lobster salad? The native cod? In a word deliciousness from every item ordered. Thank you chef Gidley. I started a bar trend that afternoon by ordering the lobster salad - soon the entire bar was eating the same! From that first meal, the Clarke Cooke became my daily go to.

Does not live up to the hype. This restaurant may have been good but now it is unprofessional and unimpressive. I do not make a habit of writing bad reviews as I don’t like to say negative things but it felt necessary after such a disappointing experience. We dined for dinner in the upstairs dining room. We arrived 10 minutes early for our 6pm reservation. The dining room was not open yet so we got a cocktail at the upper lounge. We wanted to be sure we were on time because the confirmation for our reservation noted that we only had our table from 6 PM to 7:30 PM, clearly there was an end-time for the “upscale” dining experience. Once they opened the dining room we checked in at the host stand. The staff member acknowledged our reservation and said just a minute. He then proceeded to seat for other parties as we stood awkwardly between the host stand and the bus station, we were not given any indication as to where we should wait, we noticed a group of about eight people standing in an empty area of the dining room looking as awkward as we felt and went over to stand with them. Many more guest arrived up the stairs to the host stand and were promptly seated. slowly some of us in the impromptu staging area we’re taken to our seats, my friend and I being the last. Not arriving at our table until 6:15. We also noticed the music was not turned on for about another 15 minutes. It definitely appeared they were not prepared for the evening. The wine was overpriced. We paid $155 for a bottle of wine that retails for around $30. The restaurant mark-up is expected but this was excessive. And we noticed they were charging four dollars more for a glass of wine in that dining room then they were charging for that same glass in the lounge just eight steps below. When our entrées arrived my filet was so tough I had to saw at it with the knife. It was grainy and soggy so I chose to send the dish back. Our server walked by our table multiple times while my fork and knife were set on the plate and I was not eating. Instead of checking on his own he sent another staff member to our table to ask. When I expressed concern that it may have been previously frozen, he took the food away. He returned a few minutes later, asking if I would like a new dish prepared, I declined. I was hesitant to order anything else because my friends dish was also terrible, she ordered a seafood dish. The lobster was so overcooked, it was rubbery. After that multiple staff members came over to tell me that they had checked with the chef and I was wrong, the meat had not been frozen. It was very clear they we’re more concerned with their reputation than guest experience. If it was not frozen then it was just the worst cut of filet I’ve ever been served. At the end of the meal, before dropping the check, the server touched my shoulder and, in a condescending way, said don’t worry I’ve removed the item from the your check, of course. It’s worth mentioning there are only male servers in this particular dining room and the women’s room is on the very top floor of the restaurant up multiple flights of stairs and filthy. The men’s room is much more accessible. Overall we found the establishment pretentious and dated, prioritizing guests they perceived to be wealthy, namely the older white men. The food, boring and poorly prepared and the service scattered and rude.

My family and I ate dinner at CCH on Sunday July 21st 2024 - i told them I had a shellfish allergy and ordered a salmon dish. They cross contaminated my salmon with shellfish and I woke up in the middle of the night with a full shellfish reaction. Please check your counters and food prep next time. I had to spend an extra day in my hotel unplanned so my swelling could come down and then I could drive home. Total disaster because they do not separate food prep well. Take an allergy seriously next time!

THIS WAS so much fun!! The food, the service, the atmosphere and overall experience was just what we were looking for while searching for a place to eat on the wharf. The oysters were FRESH and delicious. Everything we had to eat for dinner was just as fresh and delish!! The waitress was so nice and came around to check on us just the right amount of time. I HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

To be fair, I can’t rate their food as I only when there for drinks and sat outside. The charm for me was sitting outside on Bannister’s Wharf, people watching while having drinks. The hostess was very accommodating and our server was friendly and considerate.

Had lunch here today, and I plan to never return and highly recommend no one ever does either. Where do I begin?
People sat after us were served before us and those sat before us were served way after us.
Of the 5 of us 3 ordered burgers (2 medium rare) all burgers were well done. One of us ordered the Tuna Tartare and the bread was hard to chew. Drinks asked before our food was delivered to us were finally delivered after we had eaten.
Also apparently the men's room only has urinals, which in an emergency wouldn't be the best.
Again highly do not recommend this establishment eat elsewhere.

2 out of 3 Burgers were way overcooked and not to the menu description. Perhaps it's a one off. Service was ok and it's definitely fine dinning.
On the upside the oysters were good.

Worst customer service experience I’ve ever had. The food is ok but all 6+ interactions at 3 different host stands on different floors were disrespectful, demeaning, and rude. Waitress was fine but not friendly by any means and my party of 3 felt immensely discriminated against at this weak excuse of an establishment. Will not be returning or spending another dime here. Might I also add, we were the only table on the entire floor not given bread to start. Sigh

Been there a bunch of times - always good before. This time found a hair in my salad - gave back to my waitress. She had no idea what to do or offer. So I ate no meal. And to top it off no one from management came over even to just say so sorry sir. Never go there or recommend again

Excellent food. However, the service sucks. We were rushed from out table and reseated on the sofas to finish our meal. We had a $300.00+ tab and were treated like we were a bother. Sure, the place is historic and cool, but if your’re looking for a true experience with excellent service and food, go across the way to 22Bowen. They will treat you like a VIP AND YOU WILL LOVE EVERY BITE. We will NOT return to Cookes.

We recently dined at Clarke Cooke House for a friend's 50th birthday celebration. Unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations.
Missed Cues and Slow Service:
Despite having a reservation via Resy and mentioning it was a birthday celebration, we encountered a wait upon arrival.
Our server offered no greeting upon arrival, only inquiring about water preference. We weren't offered a wine list initially.
When the wine list finally arrived, we reiterated that it was a birthday celebration.
Overlooked Celebration:
We noticed another table celebrating a birthday and receiving a special presentation with candles. Our table received no such recognition.
Dessert Debacle:
After finishing our meal, we ordered a selection of desserts.
We waited over 20 minutes for both the desserts and after-dinner drinks.
A runner hastily delivered the desserts without a word from our server.
Missed Opportunity:
When I mentioned the lack of acknowledgement to the hostess, our server suddenly appeared asking if a single candle should be brought out after we had finished our desserts...
Overall, the inattentiveness and missed birthday recognition detracted from the celebratory atmosphere. While the location may be charming, the service fell short for a special occasion.

Do yourself the favor and don’t waste your time. Ordered two sandwiches that took 1.5 hours to come out. Took so long that before the food came out I requested for it to go now. when it FINALLY came out, never have I seen such a frail lunch. Staff acted as if this wasn’t absolutely ridiculous. Not sure if it was just a bad day or they had a hidden agenda. I would asssume it was a bad day but the performance and lack of caring what THAT bad. Too many options to waste your time here.

My wife & I eat out regularly and we r always disappointed with the waiter takes the order but a runner serves the food. Most of the time you don’t see the waiter until the time for the bill. But our waiter greeted us & gave name, ( Chase) which is unusual, and took care of our table from water to check. Beyond the wonderful service, the food was outstanding. Looking forward to returning to the Clarke Cooke House again this summer.

I’m sad to write this review, as the ambiance and service were great. We were seated next to the window and had the pleasure of watching the sunset. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. My husband started with a cup of the clam chowder and I stared with a Caesar salad. My salad was good, James noticed his chowder tasted odd, had a thin consistency, and was loaded with dill. We both enjoyed the special of the sea bass and then rounded out the meal with the snowball in hell.
Within two hours of our meal my husband’s stomach started to ache. The rest of the evening until the early hours of the morning James had severe food poisoning. Since we both had the same entree of the sea bass we will say it was from the clam chowder. If you’ve ever suffered from food poisoning, it can be painful and unpleasant. We had an unfortunate experience at the Clark Cooke House and would warn anyone considering the clam chowder to avoid it at all costs!

Food was amazing, service was excellent, atmosphere was adorable... so why 4 stars? After such a nice experience, having to figure out the bill for 6 individual diners really detracted from the experience. We passed the slip around, scribbled notes on scrap paper collected cards and cash and then the server was unable to figure it out. Our bill was over $300. Why, in this day and age, is this establishment unable to figure out how to give us separate checks is beyond me. We are a group of 10 ladies who formed 1 year ago and this is the first time we were told we could not get separate checks. It took 45 min for the manager to figure out our bill so we could pay. Clarke's Cooke House, you need to do better for your diners.

Forty years later, and it's still iconic + at the top of my go-to list. Ted Gidley is a phenomenal chef. The beautifully prepared food, including summer sushi + raw oysters, never disappoints.
The wine list is spectacular and I was able to enjoy a single glass of Opus One...who offers that?! They do!
We ate simply with a warm brussel caesar, beef carpaccio and Candy Store burger. Always looking forward to my next dinner out!

When we entered they offered to check my wife's coat and mine, so we handed them over. When I tried to get our coats back the man asked for $4. I explained that I had not known that I would be charged, and he insisted and pointed to a small sign which had not been within my line of sight, stating the fee. I then tried to pay but he did not accept card payment and demanded cash. Without my winter coat, he directed me to an outside ATM to get cash. This was after I had already tipped the server well on our expensive meal.

We were shown to a table on the 3rd floor - fine but the table was set for six - unless we were expecting some visitors - that table was a big big for two. They had two empty tables - one was a two top - the other a 4 top. We were told those tables were reserved - nobody ever showed at those tables - they remained set and empty. We felt like we were treated like 2nd class citizens - customer service please.
Even with all that - our waiter, Darius, was first rate. A real pro and made sure we were treated well.
The food was very good.
We will give it another try - just have a specific room and table requested.

Tucked away in Newport's bustling marina, the Clarke Cooke House offers a refined dining and drinking experience that remains vibrant even during the off-season. On my most recent visit, we stopped by for a nightcap and a quick bite. While the kitchen's earlier closing time during the off-season meant we could only indulge in dessert, it was a delightful pairing with our drinks at the bar. The ambiance remained lively, despite it being the quieter time of the year. From previous visits, I recall the place brimming with energy, complemented by splendid views of the Newport Marina. The cuisine here is undeniably top-notch, justifying the premium pricing. Whether you're looking for a sumptuous meal or just a sophisticated spot to relax with a drink, Clarke Cooke House delivers.

What the hell happened to this place? Had the WORST lobster roll there this weekend which was 3 very small pieces of lobster and one small piece of claw on a raw hot dog roll accompanied by the worst under cooked fries I’ve had in years.. this place used to be really good but something has changed.. $32.50 for the lobster roll and I got RIPPED OFF!!!! Never EVER again Clarke Cook House. There are a ton of better places to eat in Newport

The best part of our experience last night was leaving and walking across the road for a drink and dessert at Benjamin’s. mussels were off we sent them back and they were taken off the bill but no comment was so odd. Fish was so loaded in multiple flavours that were sweet and sour it was not edible. We got given literally the worst table in the house despite having made a reservation the day before and walk-in’s got much better tables. The table was in the door way and so tiny they could not even fit our food in it. Server was absent even when she was at our table. The host was rude the place is so overrated. Do yourself a favour and go anywhere else.

I’m forced to give this reputable and well-known restaurant in Newport a single star rating, due to the unpleasant racist treatment and rudeness received by one of the waiters who run the bar upstairs. I’ve visited this place recommended by local friends there in the last week up to three times. The first experience in the lounge I have to admit was incredible and we received exceptional treatment and had great dinner with an amazing wine. The second visit we had dinner at the bar and everything went well, except that the waiter I’m referring to did not stop making bad stupid jokes and constantly interrupting our evening, constantly trying to be funny and without paying attention serving us the glasses of wine from our bottle to overflow. My friend explained that this was not the most appropriate way to serve wine and the waiter looks like seemed offended by the comment. We paid, still leaving a very excellent tip for the waiter. The next day we decided to return and I, who was shopping in Newport, went ahead of her determined to have a cocktail at the bar. I find a seat and greet the waiter and ask him for the cocktail list and he tells me that he can't serve me because I'm not wearing a shirt. I ask him, remembering that he liked to act funny, if it's a joke, and he answers that it's not a joke and that it's the restaurant's rules. As I’m a person who perfectly understands the protocols and rules of dress when they correspond, understanding that they must be followed, I call my friend to give me a shirt as I leave the bar, but I realize that at the bar there are not only people still dressed more casual than me, but there are also at least two people who wear the exacly same Newport sweatshirt that I wear. I ask the waiter why I'm the only one he can't serve me, and if the reason is because I'm Jewish and he's racist. He tells me again that these are the rules and that he cannot serve me. The behavior of this waiter is completely unacceptable, from whom I finally had to ask for a glass of water, who served me in a very bad way and without looking at my face, banging the glass of water on the table and muttering “cheers” My friend arrived and we spoke with the manager about this unfortunate and unacceptable and unpleasant situation in the restaurant. I hope they take the appropriate measures since in these times we should not be served by rude and much less racist people.

This is my most favorite eatery in Newport! I’m a seafood and veggie lover and couldn’t be happier with their menu, quality ingredients and creative culinary executions.
Let me also share the cocktails here are well prepared and thoughtful. I love the selection of top liquors.
The ambiance is perfect for romance or a intimate family dinner - it can get a little lively at certain hours of the day but it’s so charming and the view often distracts you from any annoyingly loud parties.
Do all you can to enjoy this restaurant! It’s Newport at Its finest!
Our recent visit deserves a check in: Absolutely superb! Do not miss this exceptional dining experience. We will always go back !
We went back and have to say it just is always getting better and better! Today we enjoyed the chefs choice in Oysters and were happy to pay more than the festival rates for the sophisticated and serene atmosphere. Every staff member we encountered was just lovely!

Dinner with another couple, some of my oldest friends. The evening was great fun , catching up on many things each of us have seen, done, and are working on.
That said, the food ranged from very, very good to exquisite. (Winter squash bisque, not to be missed.) We all had drinks and/or wine. Loved my Black Martini, and my partner, her Vesper. One of the 5 of us was celebrating her birthday - her dessert arrived featuring a sparkler!
We'd go back anytime. Yes. Noisy, but that's the armosphere!

Service was poor. Water glasses filled once and never refilled. We had an 8:30 reso and were seated closer to 9:00pm, which was fine for us, except the server was kind of rude and dismissive, possibly because we were dining with our kids, ages 8 and 10. We ordered for them off the regular menu, so I’m not sure what his problem was. The food was good but nothing special and certainly did not merit being ignored.
