A traditional style sushi & ramen with a newfangled twist
Would be a 5 star..... just that we sat next to bathroom.... I guess somebody has to but there was an empty table further away from bathroom...
Food and service... both great. Our server, she was fantastic... vegan sushi?!?!?!? I was totally shocked how good it was..... and ramen was very good as well...
Definitely will go back but seat away from bathroom....

This place is small but cozy. The sushi was some of the freshest I have had. The presentation of the food was classy, served on wooden plates of different shapes and sizes. I also had the ramen which was delicious!!! Our server Angie was so polite and boxed and bagged my leftover ramen for me. I highly recommend this place!

This is one of my favorite sushi spots! (We go here every Friday^-^)
My boyfriend is vegan and they offer amazing vegan options. Their ramen is not too salty which we tend to encounter at some ramen places. We love to end our dinners with their green tea ice cream (it’s really good)
Service is average and the atmosphere is nice, they recently expanded their restaurant so now there’s more space.

My mother and I dined here for the first time over Labor Day Weekend. We called last minute to snag a reservation, and Tomo easily accommodated us with a table outside. I initially chose this neighborhood spot because my mom is vegan and gluten free, and the menu looked promising. Our knowledgeable, helpful server presented us with an allergen menu, which eased any concerns immediately. The specialty rolls looked insane - swapping out fake meat substitutes for actual originality. We ordered the following: the seaweed salad, a side of white rice, Alaskan roll, avocado roll, Chao roll x2 (it was THAT good), and I believe the Midori roll. We loved the Chao roll as the vegan cheese was seared, creating a warm ooey, gooey taste against the burst of flavors in the shiitake and avocado. The service was great, the food was spot on, and we're still talking about it..a month later!

I learned about Tomo on tiktok and decided to come try it out with my son. The Vegan Tomo roll tastes very similar to actual tuna. The menu said it was supposed to be seared on top and it wasn’t. It was still tasty nonetheless. I also had the vegetarian miso ramen and added the teriyaki seitan, which was very tasty! I think they would benefit from some juice options for kids. I opted for the unsweetened green tea and was given simple syrup to sweeten it for my five year old. Overall, I would come back and try more of their menu!

Our experience with Tomo started off promising, but ultimately was quite underwhelming. It was fine at best, and while nothing was actively bad, most of the dishes were unimpressive and did not give me any reason to come back.
To start off with the good though: it's a really charming and beautiful space! It's very wood-forward, the decorations are pleasant and inviting, and the tables were unique. It's a fairly compact restaurant which makes it feel pretty cozy. Also, our gyoza appetizer (not pictured unfortunately) was the one food item that was really really good. Finally, it's a BYOB which is definitely a plus.
The rest of the food and service was quite middling, however. It took me a while to pick a sushi roll from their "specialty rolls" section, since most rolls had at least one or two fairly odd ingredients that was offputting. I decided to play it safe and go with their "Tomo roll", the first on the list and since it bears the restaurant's name should be a good representation of what they have to offer. It looked aesthetically beautiful... but simply did not taste good. It was very bland, and the abundant cilantro was just weird. My eel nigiri were good, pretty comparable to what I would get anywhere else.
The biggest disappointment was the ramen, which was completely unimpressive. The broth (we got shoyu) had no depth of flavor and something was off about the texture of the noodles. It wasn't actively bad, but there wasn't anything actively good about it either. I would not recommend the ramen.
Finally, the service was ok but all our food was brought out at the same time except one party member's ramen bowl, which came out about 20 minutes later than everything else. We were pretty much finished by the time this person actually got their food, which was a little bit awkward.
Overall I think if you go to Tomo you won't have a bad experience by any means, but you may be left very underwhelmed and probably look elsewhere. Everything looks nice and the sushi rolls do look beautiful, but it makes it a bit more disappointing when most things are average at best.

Nice sushi spot in the heart of Philadelphia. It's a cozy space with beautiful interior design. The staff was attentive and friendly. The value was right for the food, and there were more than enough vegan options to satisfy me!
I'll definitely be back

I ordered delivery through DoorDash. I’ve gone here a few times in person and enjoyed it. Sushi is good and fresh generally but I’m so disappointed with the ramen order.
I ordered four “sides” for the ramen for extra $$ but they added EVERYTHING to the ramen instead and it was not edible. It was the saltiest and worst ramen I ever had. DON’T market it as “on the side” if you’re going to add it directly into the broth. Make sure you write in the comments that you want it on the side or they’ll make your ramen not edible.

This is one of my favorite Philly restaurants I’ve been going to for years! It is very small so you almost always need a reservation. Sometimes service isn’t super quick since they’re always so busy but the food is always amazing. If you are looking for unique vegetarian sushi, this is the place to go to! I love the bao buns and mochi as well! My husband enjoys their ramen!

Their vegan sushi was outstanding, and many items are available gluten free. They have gf soy sauce as well. I appreciate that more sushi restaurants are giving their vegetarian/vegan rolls the attention they deserve!
Our service was pretty slow on a friday night and we had somewhere to be so it felt a little rushed in the end, despite allotting 90 mins for the meal. The food came out about 50 minutes after we sat down. I would still definitely return, just not with somewhere to be afterwards.

11/10 recommend this place!! 🤍✨
Had a sushi roll and veggie gyoza as starters - both very delicious. Than the ramen (great selection; also for veggies/vegans) which was incredibly delicious and included a variety of nice toppings (black fungus, etc.). And as dessert, we chose green tea mochis - also delicious.
Service was absolutely perfect - very attentive, water was constantly refilled, etc. ♥️
Great job to the whole team!! Delicious food and 100% worth a visit!!

Great service plus you can reserve a table for inside or outside. It’s a very cozy spot but each table is comfortable and big enough for your meal. So delish! I would definitely recommend making a reservation- we were there from 5:30-7 on a Sunday night and it was packed. There is limited seating inside so things get a bit cramped. Food is so delicious and their unique rolls make the experience. We had edamame, dragon roll (so good if you like eel), Alaskan (a classic), salmon yaki roll, and vanilla mochi. Everything was delicious and I’d get it all again!

Outstanding. It’s everything a masterful dining experience should be. Best bet is to make a resy (it gets busy). Service staff are very polite but not in your face. Restaurant is dim lit, earthy and sushi vibe-y in there. Everything was perfectly made: black tea, seaweed salad (wow!), tomo specialty rolls (spicy tuna topped with a little cilantro- yum!), miso soup to warm your soul, tuna and salmon nigiri (excellent!), the miso ramen (a warm hug in a bowl!), and finish it off with red bean ice cream (it’s got a little crunch- love!). Fresh, tasty, delicious, lovely, get in there!

I ordered an extra egg for my ramen, only to see two half eggs. I reminded the server that I ordered an extra egg and he told me they only give half an egg. I don’t know if this is normal in America but I was shocked to realise I paid extra for half an egg. They should clarify this on the menu because it feels like a lie otherwise. Imagine ordering and burger and getting half of it. Other than that, service and food was mid and generally over priced

The hosts and servers are all attentive and extremely friendly. Thursday night was fairly busy, so our food came to us a lot longer than anticipated. The Tomo roll was group favorite out of the Steven and Aka Yuki rolls. My partner and I did have a stomach ache after our meal, but the food was just alright to our liking. The sushi rice could’ve been a bit more sticky, since it was falling off the seaweed, and the nigiri pieces did not hold together well

Food was great. A 20% tip was automatically included. When paying, their POS asked us to leave a 2nd tip. Be sure to check your receipt.
Edited to add, we weren't notified about the tip and the menu is through a QR code. Payment is also through a QR code, so it's a bit harder to catch.

Service was incredibly slow (waiter and kitchen) and the sushi was falling apart when being picked up. It didn’t have a good seal at the seam. Plus the pricing was $30 per person with no alcoholic drinks included.

Overall: 3/5
Food: 3/5 - I got the shoyu ramen and my cousin got the mayu tonkotsu ramen and the taste was just alright. The broth was alright and I did not finish the ramen as the taste was just underwhelming. I would not come back here for the ramen.
Value : 3/5 - Standard price for the area. If I wanted better ramen in the area, I think I would do more research and searching around to find another place that does it better - even if the cost may be higher. I just walked into this place as we saw it as we were walking around the city not expecting much.
Service : 3/5 - Alright service. We were told that we were only allowed to sit at the bar even though there were many empty tables so I am unsure as to why we were restricted to the bar.
I would not come back here if in the area. The taste was underwhelming and although not bad, it is a meal that I will most likely forget and not go out of my way to come back for and would most likely suggest something else if this place was brought up.

Charges high sushi prices without the quality.
Don’t get the Sashimi Skewers or Sushi Combos!!
Paid $17 for 3 Sashimi Skewers expecting them to be full of meat, instead they were about 2 inches long and had 2 small chunks of sashimi each. They were instead padded with fruits and vegetables.
We also got $19 Salmon Combo, which turned out to only have 4 pieces of sushi, 2 sashimi and 1 fried tofu wrapped maki.
These two were total rip offs, we got them and were shocked at how little sushi they gave us for the price

Amazing, amazing place. It’s a small humble spot with incredible food, particularly their extensive selection of vegan sushi options. I thoroughly enjoyed dinner here and can’t wait to return. Best value for sushi in Philadelphia, as far as I know! Quality seafood is a rare commodity in our time - but you will find it here. The four specialty rolls we had were excellent, as was the Ramen.

This place doesn't just have veggie options, it has mastered the art of delicious vegan sushi that is 100% as good as fish. We got several plant based rolls. All were beautifully crafted works of art and flavor experiences. The vegan ramen was creamy and full of umami. They even have vegan ice cream mochi. This place is a must.

The food here is truly incredible, but the restaurant service here is appalling. Today was my second time going to Tomo- Valentines Day. I’d called to make a reservation but they said, “we don’t take reservations we are walk-in only”- even though there’s a section on their website that says “reservations”. When I showed up they sat us outside in 30° weather even tho there was a table open inside. When I asked if we could have that table instead they said it was “reserved” for someone. Both times I’ve been here I’ve been unable to get a table inside. I find that pretty unbelievable. Both times the service is so slow, it interferes with the enjoyment of a meal. This restaurant service staff is clearly overwhelmed and the restaurant should either limit tables or hire more staff. As someone who works in the industry, It’s unacceptable to handle more orders than you can handle. It’s an unfair dining experience- it leaves customers unhappy and it affects the servers jobs. The fact that dine-in customers are being neglected for mobile orders, is simply unprofessional. This restaurant needs to understand its limitations or it will risk losing clientele. I’m debating ever going her again since it seems I can never actually enjoy the indoor dining experience. Truly disappointed.
Service + atmosphere: 1/10
Food: 9.5/10

Quality restaurant. There are few restaurants left putting out as high of quality of food as this one, especially given the price. The quality of their sashimi/sushi ingredients is top tier. The cuts on their fish for sashimi are very impressive compared to other sushi/sashimi locations of similar price. They don't skimp on the sushi/sashimi condiments. The most impressive part is that their ramen is also delicious. It's rare you find a place that's doing sushi & ramen well. Usually, one or the other is being done well, but this place is exceptional at both. So far, I've had the mayu ramen, sashimi deluxe, triple salmon bite, miso soup, pork bao buns, and the shrimp on fire roll and all have been delicious. I'll surely be trying the rest of the menu in the future.

I am grateful that we were seated without reservation. Atmosphere is very nice. There were 3 Sushi chefs at the sushi bar. But why would anybody make the rolls first, before the appetisers were even prepared? Those rolls ended up sitting on top of the sushi bar for 20-25 mins easy before being served. From food safety perspective not the best choice.

I've visited twice and tried both vegan ramen and vegan sushi options. The vegetarian miso ramen (can make vegan) is excellent, with deep flavors in the broth. The noodles were cooked perfect. Really nice flavors on all the components in the dish.
The spicy vegan "tuna" roll was excellent, though I don't know if it really tastes like tuna. I believe it is a beet and the texture was pretty reminiscent of sushi as I recall it. The pickled radish and mushroom rolls were also great.

The vegan sushi is unfortunately not very good, and it's expensive for what you get. I'd say it's typical for the vegan sushi I've had in the past but unfortunately the average meal I've had is not very good and so the corresponding rating for this place has to be low.

Horrible service. I came to the place to order takeout. Тhe girl said where to sit. After I ordered, she said that I had to wait for the order for 30 minutes, and there were no free tables, and she made me get up. I paid her cash and she left and didn't show up for more than 5 minutes. I stood and waited. After she came back i asked her again how long will my order be ready. she said 10 minutes. I asked if I could wait inside, given that there were at least 3-4 tables available. She put me on the same table I had sat on before. And after 5 minutes she picked me up for the second time because there was a reservation at the same table. Good thing my order was ready. I give 3 stars because sushi was good but i won't come second time to this place!

Was underwhelmed by the host who could NOT find an open table for one with a total of 6 open tables in the shop and outside. He seated a table of two right away. They walked right after he turned me away. They didn’t have a reservation. And otherwise nobody waiting. GoogleMaps indicating the restaurant was less busy than usual. He was willing to let a customer walk away...
... and now, never come back.
Found an equally high rated and welcoming restaurant a block away.

A 5 star vegan sushi experience
Hand crafted vegan sushi rolls that were creative and delicious. We were pleased to find a vegan section in the menu with more than your average vegetable rolls.
Tried and loved the veggie on fire, Philly cheesesteak and red dragon roll. Also enjoyed the edamame.

I thought it was AIGHT but I think my companion thought it was a little fishy so to speak 🐠😂 they didn't finish their half of the sushi which I gluttonously brought home and ate later. The prices were moderate, the sushi configurations imaginative and the interior... cool. Nothing wow-worthy though, so I feel obligated to dishonor this place with 3 stars.

Tomo was amazing! I’m “mostly vegetarian”, and my youngest is a strict vegetarian. It’s always challenging going to sushi due to the very limited options.
We were really excited to have a wide range of options to try…all of which were great. Our favorites were the Vegan Tomo and the Spicy Vegan Tuna. Enjoyed the vegan mochi ice cream to top it off.
As an added bonus we briefly met the owner on the way out.
Highly recommend!

I recently visited this restaurant based on a recommendation that their food was absolutely delicious. However, I was disappointed to find out that they were unable to seat my family of ten people. The explanation provided for this inconvenience was quite confusing and did not make much sense.

The Tomo Roll is amazing

The vegan sushi rolls here are AMAZING! My favorite takeout and dine-in sushi spot for dinner. The atmosphere is a bit crammed inside, so I prefer sitting outside when the weather abides. I recommend the veggie bun, as well as the veggie on fire with vegan mayo.

All of the food was just fine. Nothing really stood out as fantastic. The service was also just fine. They were able to take reservations for a larger party which was nice. But I felt like they didn't pay much attention to our table after we had our food. We needed more water for example and only got more when they came by with the check.

Terrible experience. I was introduced to this restaurant and was told it was top notch, I was very disappointed to find out it wasn't. Honestly, the food was unique and delicious, but the server was very unprofessional. We waited over 30 minutes for our food and the server never checked in, updated us, or refilled our drinks. I think he needs to take a customer service 101 class. I can understand if it was a busy time, but he was talking to another server in the back. When you eat at a restaurant, the price of the food includes the service. It's not just the server's responsibility to take the order and bring the food to your table. If you want to get a generous tip, you need to do your job or at least try to do your job.

This tiny restaurant is so underrated it should be no less than 5 stars. The Special Udon for $17 is such a good deal for the amount of food you get. I'm not even sure how they make a profit on it because you get a roll, 3 pcs sushi, 4 pcs tempura, and seafood udon all for $17.
I'm assuming its so cheap because its right above H-Mart but man, I have never seen a better deal at a sushi restaurant. Most Japanese restaurants will charge you $17 or more for seafood udon alone!

While traveling to Philadelphia we decided to have Ramen for lunch so we found this place.
Staff in the restaurant was very nice and helpful. Selection of food was also good. Place is clean and easy accessible.
Ramen itself was good and tasty. What was missing to get 5 starts was to makes it more spicy and more exceptional.
If you like good Ramen then this place is worth visiting.

Oh my goodness. We had the best time. Food was mostly decent, but the service we received was outstanding. Our server was a very tall man with dreds who I regretfully never got his name. He was super wonderful. If I lived near by I would be a regular.

✨ BEST VEGAN RAMEN/SUSHI ✨ If you are vegan, you must come here! TOMO is a beautiful & cozy ramen/sushi place that has regular choices as well as a mind blowing selection of vegan finds! So many ramen places just offer one or two vegan things and that’s it- NOT at TOMO!
We loved the decor & ambience. It feels like a fancy sushi place you would find in NYC with a cozy vibe. Wooden accents, Edison bulb lighting & plants fill this space.
Now for the food… wow. So good.
What we got:
My partner got the chicken ramen & said it was the best ramen he has ever had. Flavored perfectly, lots of noodles, & the chicken was cooked perfectly.
I got the vegan ramen. Also lots of noodles. The broth was creamy & lots of flavor. I feel lots of ramen shops that do vegan just do a basic veggie broth- but TOMO knocked it out of the park. Lots of mushrooms & the seitan was flavorful & cooked perfectly tender & paired well with the flavorful broth! Ive had a lot of vegan ramen- and this is the best!
They have a huge selection of sushi AND vegan sushi. Not your average avocado/cucumber rolls (but they also have that if that’s your jam) They have mock seafood sushi rolls too. I got the “chao” roll which was vegan cream cheese, mushrooms & vegan cheese. It was really good & a flavor I have not have yet as vegan sushi.
Seriously beautiful food too. The sushi came out on a wooden plank & was artfully placed. Even the ramen looked beautiful but tasted even better!
Do yourself a favor and go here! Its great because everyone can find something here- ramen, sushi & vegan choices! We were so happy we tried this place & will return!

We've been back to eat at Tomo half a dozen times since I wrote this original review. I still stand by it 100%. Don't walk, run to Tomo!
Holy hell! This place is amazing! My husband and I are both following a vegan diet. One of the things that we have always been missing is sushi. Every time we go someplace and ask for vegan sushi we get a roll with cucumber carrot and avocado. Tomo has a huge vegan selection. It was so tasty that I didn't even want to dip my rolls in soy sauce. They were so flavorful. It takes us about an hour to get there, with traffic. With that being said, this is our new go-to place for sushi. I'll drive all the way to the city for takeout. Top notch! If you want to eat there I highly recommend making reservations. They don't have many tabletops on the inside. They clearly do a huge takeout business. We saw bags going by left and right. As well they should be. This place rocks!

We went for vegan restaurant week and loved it! I like normal sushi, but the vegan version gave it a run for its money. The portions were also quite large and reasonably priced.

These sushi devours come all the way from @tomophilly sushi and ramen 🍜 in good ole old city. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining. The bathrooms are really clean. The service was excellent. My server was very polite and very helping in guiding me through the menu. For starters, I ordered the Miso soup and baby octopus 🐙. Both were sooo good and delightful. I then ordered the chef’s special red dragon roll. By which a spicy tuna roll with avocado and topped with cooked eel. This roll was absolutely mind blowing! It was very delicious and I really enjoyed it! If you ever find yourself wanting to try a new sushi spot? Check out @tomophilly and of course you know what to do! #philly #philadelphia #water #eel #sushi #seafood #food #foodie #foodblogger #foodphotography

I really appreciate that they have such a large amount of vegan sushi! The ideas for all the rolls are really great but unfortunately for me the execution wasn’t there. A lot of spicy elements and then strange sweet ones like sweet coconut. The vegan tuna is really spicy and I wasn’t a huge fan of the cheesesteak roll which I had been extra excited for. It’s good sushi but I wouldn’t go back.

Some of the best vegan sushi we've ever had!! Tried the chao, harvest, and vegan green dragon rolls. All of them had beautifully balanced flavors and offered a wonderful experience. The Vegan Yasai Ramen was also amazing. They even make regular sushi and ramen for diners not ready to explore the wonderful plant based options

I haven’t had ONE THING that wasn’t good on the menu. Best sushi restaurant in town.

Great vegetarian options. The spicy mayo was on the sweeter side. Service was great. Multiple staff members kept an eye on our water, a server came to ask how the food was, and was very accommodating. Can't wait to go back.

Exceptionally ecstatic to find a place for good vegan sushi (that’s not just another peanut avocado roll!). The food here is imaginative, fresh, and delicious.
This is a small space, I recommend getting reservations if you want to be sure to get a table.
