I dream of the edamame dumplings. Best happy hour in Philly. Shhhhh, let’s keep it our little secret.

Double Knot in Philadelphia is one of those spots you can’t miss, especially if you’re into great food, drinks, and atmosphere. Raise your hand if you like Asian Fusion like me. Michael Schulson really knows what he’s doing. This place is genius. We went on Taco Tuesday and had the tacos, which were solid, but the baked scallop and crab was the show stopped. So good.

The smoked Manhattan is a must—it’s not just a drink. They really put on a show with it, and it’s amazing every time.

If you go, ask to sit downstairs. Trust me, that’s where the magic is. The upstairs is cool, but the downstairs has this incredible vibe. It’s dark, intimate, and just perfect for a night out. Don’t miss it.

The place was nice, the food was great...only issue was waiting for the food, we did the chef tasting and in between tasting there was like a 10-15 min wait. There's about 10 tastings 🙃 and never did receive our soft serve.

10/10 dining experience here. We got a late reservation for Saturday night at 9:45 PM. Prompt seating, courteous staff, received our menus and drinks right away. Highly recommend booking a downstairs table vs the upstairs bar area for ambiance.

The tasting menu was well worth the price. We shared one cocktail and the total bill including tax and tip was about $100 per person. Everything we ate was delicious, the scallops in particular blew us away. Dessert was also included. The food was more than enough for both of us and we even ended up taking some boxes home. I attached some photos, just keep in mind that these portion sizes are for two people.

The only thing we slightly regretted ordering was the blue crab roll (rather bland) but it hardly impacted our experience overall. We will definitely be returning and getting the tasting menu again

This experience was rather heart breaking because I come here all the time. I came to double knot for dinner and I ordered the shrimp tempura, lobster rice and fried chicken. As you can see my chicken is super undercooked!! I’m even more disappointed because the server simply asked to take it off the bill as if that suffices for serving me raw chicken. I should have asked to speak to a manager but I chose to be non confrontational.. highly disappointed

I have never written a review before but even a day later I'm in disbelief by how rude the server Ms. Sierra W was. I will start off by saying I love the Michael Schulson restaurants and have had happy hour at several of them but have always walked past Double Knot to go to Sampan but I finally got curious enough to try it out. Myself and 2 friends got to Double Knot at 4:45pm. I asked the hostess if happy hour was at the bar only, I was told no but seating at a table had about an hour wait, that was fine and I put my name down and went to Graffiti Bar to wait. Got the txt that our table was ready at 5:25pm, we were seated and ordered food and drinks with Sierra at 5:36pm(bill timestamp). I'd say our food came at a normal waiting time, our drinks came a while after we had started eating though but after we ate some of our food Sierra came and asked us if we wanted to put more food in, we told her we did but not just yet. Then she comes back like 10 min later asking again? And she was sounding pushy about it but I just politely said once again that yes we will but in a little bit. And then at this point my friend asked how long happy hour was until and Sierra said 7pm. After she left we looked at the time and it was 6:11pm, so we thought there would be no issue with getting more food still during happy hour. Well, boy were we wrong because Sierra comes back and haughtily asks if she can start clearing our plates???? And I said "sure, but we'll need more when we get another order" and she clears the plates away. Well maybe 10 min later despite our voicing of wanting more food and I'm only halfway done my tall drink, at 6:30pm Sierra promptly throws down a receipt on our table and we were appalled. She also gives receipts to two tables on our left so I asked our neighbors if they had asked for theirs. They told us that they had, but they had also been told that apparently for happy hour you can only sit for 1hr 15 min (which would have been nice to know when I put my name down for an hour wait time, why would I wait an hour to only sit down and eat for an hour?). At no point had our table been informed of this and that doesn't even matter because Sierra was so rude as though she was never taught how to politely speak to people, she had SEVERAL opportunities to bring up this so called time limit but not once did she say anything. Instead she just marched around and loomed over us like a dark specter waiting to spy a credit card sitting on the bill we never asked for. I'm actually mad at myself for giving her any tip at all, my tip should have been to tell her to not be so passive aggressive. I also wonder if she was trying clear out her tables so she can get another round in before hh ended, because why did we all get served our bills at the same time? and the 2 tables next to us were seated after us, and she took our plates at like minute 50?????? We for sure will never come back and am debating if I should ever return to Sampan as well, Sierra might walk through the connecting door to serve me my bill over there as well. It's a shame because I really do like this restaurant collective and the atmosphere at DK is quite nice, despite the haughty waitress.

I recently visited Double Knot and had the unfortunate experience of having a Coachroacj jump on to my shirt during dinner. In the moment, the manager came over, removed the cockroach, apologized, and we continued with our food. Having lost our appetite, we decided to leave.

On the way back from the bathroom before leaving, my wife spoke with the manager, who said they had removed one $13 item from the $177 total. Additionally they offered to review the bill further but we informed them that the server had allready taken our payment. They sent out ice cream and sparklers, which, while a thoughtful gesture, felt insufficient. Granted, I imagine this is an anomaly, but I felt the management staff lacked a clear plan to handle something like this.

I hope that if something similar happens to future customers, the restaurant will ensure they leave feeling confident that every effort was made to resolve the issue and encourage their return.

Sat on waitlist for 1 hour — until the hostess told me there was an “error” and I was removed from the waitlist. She lied that it was because of a “wrong number” while I showed her the text I received from restaurant. Instead of correcting whatever issues they were experiencing that night, she said she could only put me back on waitlist for another hour wait. Completely unprofessional waste of time

This is the perfect spot for a date night! The atmosphere is cozy and lively, though it was pretty crowded when we visited, we were able to walk in and get a table for two without much of a wait. The service was excellent.

The food was delicious, though the portion sizes were on the smaller side. I opted out of the tasting menu, which in hindsight may have been a good decision. After starting with an appetizer, two hand rolls, and some fried rice, I was still pretty hungry. That said, the lobster fried rice was my favorite dish! It's not a dry dish, as there's a sauce in the bowl as well—don’t be turned off by the sauce, it complements the dish well.

One thing to note: seating is a bit tight. The tables are close together, and you can easily hear the conversation at the next table, which might be a bit off-putting for some if you're looking for a more intimate, private dining experience.

If you're staying nearby at the Marriott Downtown, Double Knot is within walking distance, making it a great option for a meal without having to travel far. Overall, I highly recommend this spot. Just keep in mind the smaller portions and close seating!

worst service ever. They spilt a whole glass of wine on my friend and made all of her clothes wet. They were not even truly sorry when they apologize. They just took the drink off the bill. While my friend was forced to get home in her wet shirt and jacket in such cold weather because of their fault. Worst attitude ever. Would never come back again.

Good food, terrible customer service. Strict about waiting for entire party to seat. I understand it’s a choice to have that policy, but personally, I believe it gives off a pretty snotty vibe. Also, their waiting area does not accommodate making people wait like this. They state that the normal protocol is to offer a seat at the bar, but it is impossible right now since it is full. Fair enough, but in that case, I’d suggest you just go ahead and seat people so that people are not awkwardly standing in the entryway blocking the hostess stated, other arriving guests, and the server’s water station. On top of that, although we were on time, they threatened when we requested to just be seated to cancel our reservation if the other two guests didn’t show up on time. This doesn’t even make sense from the perspective of the restaurant earning money. Just seat us - we’ll order drinks and appetizers - and when the rest of our party arrives - we’ll continue ordering food.

I typically love this restaurant especially their chef tasting menu. However on this night I was on a tight schedule to get in and out before heading to the airport. I arrived at 4:50pm for a dinner reservation at the bar for the downstairs section at 5pm but wasn’t seated until about 5:10-5:15pm. I knew what I wanted so I immediately ordered the upgraded chef’s tasting menu. The food was phenomenal but near the end I started getting full so I opted to get half of the fish and lobster rice and steak to go since I was heading to the airport. The fish and lobster rice I had already packaged in one container. I asked the bartender for another to take my remainder of steak and sweet potato purée to go but he let 10-15 minutes go by then accidentally cleared by plate with about 4 pieces of steak and half a plate of purée remaining. After apologizing he went into the bar back section to double check that he had thrown it away then said he would have the kitchen remake it to go and apologized. He went in and out out the bar back room a few times as did the manager until they eventually pulled my steak out of the trash and served it to me in a leftover container. I’m disgusted and will never go back

This place disappointed. The real sushi spots nearby had private events so tried this spot.

I feel my server has not had much experience as she forgot about me multiple times.

If you want real Asian food go somewhere else.. after a few bites I actually looked up and around to notice not 1 Asian person in sight during my 7pm dinner 😂

Food looked good in a photo but didn’t taste as good. For example, I got wagyu soup dumplings… but they are I guess fried and there is no soup 😂😂 it was just a dumpling

Either way, this place is probably a good lounge? But not a good restaurant.

This is a restaurant I will come back again. While the food was decently delicious. There was nothing that stood out. Slightly annoyed at the many small plates that interrupted any chance of having a conversation with my dinner date ( highly recommend the restaurant checking with clients if they are sharing, and put a course, not just 2 pieces on the plate and deliver. Sushi bar service done from inside counter and outside should be treated differently). Good Hospitality is not which side you serve your clients, it’s being there when need to and not when you are clearly cutting people off mid conversation, again and again and again.. next time I will try a table and their famous cocktail menu see if I have better luck!!

Came here for a one year anniversary celebration dinner with my girlfriend. Immediately after arriving we were able to check in for our 7:15 Saturday reservation. The hostess was very nice and congratulated us on the anniversary. Waited no more than 5 min to be seated. Our table was nicely lit by candles and the room wasn’t too loud. Waiter Hazel was excellent. As first time diners, everything was explained to us and the tasting menu was made specially based off of our own tastes. It was a rolling kitchen so the food came promptly as soon as it was ready and was delicious. The only negative was that one of our items didn't arrive (soup dumplings). We only noticed when we got home though. Dessert (soft serve) was tasty and came with a sparkler to commemorate the event. Overall, fantastic time and highly recommend the tasting menu for special occasions.

Ok it’s a 4.5 but I thought a 4 was reasonable as to our experience. Here tonight 11/29/24 for happy hour. Right near us a family with an almost 2 yr and 4 yd old were seated. I love children and I get wanting to go out but then eat in the dining room. The 4 yr old was getting louder and louder the 2 yr old caused things to fly including part of a drink at the other table next to them. Then the four yr old started losing his cool and started screaming! He would not stop and then parents hurried dressed the kids up and did leave. Nara are for adults and don’t hate on me I am a mother!

Ok so now the food and drinks. I had a wonderful drink, really enjoyed the pork Bao and chicken Bao, Japanese fried chicken. Our daughter loved the tuna hand roll. Drinks on happy hour are only two choices but had the vodka which was very good. Decent service and cool vibe. Prices are very good during happy hour and place was very busy! Enjoyed it once situation calmed down.

The service is friendly and prompt, and the food is seasoned perfectly. The robotayaki eggplant, scallions, and mushrooms were particularly tasty, as was the crispy tofu. The only downside for us was that the downstairs bar lighting is extremely dim, to the point where we needed our phone flashlights to read the menu, and we could only sort of see what we were eating. I'm sure it would be good mood lighting for a date, but not great when eating out with one's grandfather 😅

“A Japanese restaurant run by Americans, with a mysterious, dimly-lit ambiance giving off a pseudo-Asian vibe. The food is decent, but the portions are half the size of what you’d get in Japan. It’s all about the atmosphere. Worth a visit, though not necessarily worth waiting in line.”

My wife and I had high hopes for this spot. We went for happy hour after work. Table sizes are small and cramped, with your table neighbors being less than three inches away from you. Prices were fair but the food was mediocre. Pork bao buns were tasty but that’s probably the pork belly doing the heavy lifting. Kimchi fried rice was completely devoid of flavor. We ordered one ribeye skewer and one chicken wing skewer. The skewers were double skewered which would be fine except when we inquired about the chicken wing skewer being a long ticket time, our server Olivia said “I’m confused if you didn’t get it why is there two skewers in you vase?” (Used skewers go into a small carafe, they obnoxiously call a vase.) When told the ribeye came on two skewers there was no apology just a hand on my shoulder and her assuring me that she believed me that we didn’t get the chicken wing skewer. I don’t enjoy being called a liar or being touched by a stranger. No more than five minutes later my wife’s chicken wing was delivered, by food runner to our neighbor’s table. I would have complained to the manager but he was far too busy and unbuttoning his shirt to obscene levels to even do a table touch. Save your money go somewhere else.

Food was incredible, server was very decent and knowledgeable, atmosphere is a sexy vibe. Sadly I had to kill a XXL cockroach during dinner because they were not invited. Diners next to us shared she heard another person seen same kind of bugs before. Manager came over and explained they just had pest control come out and pretty much said so the bus are trying to run away. Although we all know this could've been possible I did not like dining with the fact the bugs were running. I think this could've been handled a lil differently.

This is my third time visiting this restaurant. I’ve tried the Japanese fried chicken, the kimchi rice, the shrimp tacos, the shrimp tempura & the tautline hitch. Everything tasted amazing. The first time I sat in the basement (very dark), the second time I sat at the bar and the third time I sat across from the bar when you first enter. However, here are a couple things that affected this rating - 1. I was sat at the couches by the door and the seats were very low so I requested to sit elsewhere and the host responded with attitude saying all of the seats were the same. I told her this isn’t the first time I’ve visited so I know that’s not true. She moved me but I didn’t really appreciate the attitude. Kindness goes a long way and that was uncalled for. 2. The server I had completely neglected me. I got my Japanese chicken first and waited a good 30 mins before she finally stopped by to ask if I needed anything else. Once she realized I didn’t have my rice she went to check on it but I watch her as she went past me to delivered the rice to a lady that came way after I did then she came to bring me the second bowl she had in her hand. I had to watch an additional 15-20min after my table was cleaned up to even receive the check. I will say the other two times I visited the service was better so I’m unsure why I experienced this today.

Although the service was good, the food unfortunately did not meet our expectations.

We ordered several rolls, anticipating flavorful and exciting fish. Unfortunately, every roll was either bland or unbalanced. Two rolls were poorly constructed and nearly fell apart, one had cold and soggy shrimp tempura, and another was dressed with an excessive amount of ume sauce.

Our experience with the robatayaki dishes was similarly disappointing. The eggplant was bland and even though it was served with a sauce, it didn't enhance nor balance the dish. The octopus was overcooked and tough, with an over-seasoned sauce. The chicken was overcooked, dry, and lacked flavor.

We also tried the fried chicken, which was slightly overcooked but still enjoyable. The side dish of ramen came with overcooked, mushy noodles.

The ambiance was notably dim, which could pose a challenge for guests with visual impairments, especially in the lower dining area unless there is a brighter section available.

Our server was excellent, demonstrating extensive knowledge of the menu and readily answering any questions we had.

Omg, the freshest fish and sushi I’ve tried in my life. Great atmosphere and service. We got seats near the sushi bar and it didn’t disappoint. You can see how they are made. Great white wine.

The hostess was condescending… calling me “Love.” It was annoying. We had a reservation at the bar downstairs. The bartender was standing right in front of us. My husband asked 3 times to order a drink. We were completely ignored. We got up and left. We will not return!

A very cool all-around experience.

It was a little dark, so getting downstairs was very difficult, but it adds to the ambience. Hard to see the menus by candlelight, though.

But the food was absolutely delicious. I am a very picky eater, so I tend to like very focused dishes. Much of Double Knot's menu is small and focused, which enabled me to eat a huge variety of food and share with my friends. Truly my favorite dining experience in recent memory.

It was a pleasurable experience visiting Double knot for dinner. Do book a table in advance. The moment you enter the place you can view the vibe there.
Coming to the food, it is delicious and worth a try. The standout were branzino, black cod rice and mushroom gyoza. We tried several things like chicken, baked sushi rolls and branzino from Japanese tapas and fried chicken and black cod rice from main menu. Excellent food, service and atmosphere.

Discovered this gem & it’s one of my regular places now! Love the happy hour food menu. Crispy Brussel sprouts are the best! Not too saucy or burnt like is too common around Philly. Vibe is great also. Not too loud and a good mix of people. Definitely give this place a try! You won’t regret it.

a very bougie restaurant. The downstairs area had a dark, moody vibe with a candle on the table to read the menus.

I enjoyed the food; both the duck and lamb dishes were delicious.

However, the service was not very prompt. We had to call the staff several times and remind them again, but eventually, we just gave up.
Gosh, I didn’t take pictures!!! Maybe it was too dark. It has been a while, anyway, I will do a series Philly restaurants review to mark my time there

OK place, very dark downstairs, food pleasant, a bit overpriced. Was packed on a Thursday at 5PM. Highlights: Pork belly skewers (fatty, melt in mouth), chicken bao buns (normally not a fan, but these were great). Given that it is needlessly dark and also relatively pricey, I'll check out other places rather than returning.

Food and service highly exceeded expectations (and expectations were high to begin with). We had Hazel as a server and not only was he extremely knowledgable about the menu but was very engaging as a server. He was fun and funny and did not lead us wrong with one recommendation! Additionally, him and the staff were very accommodating for dietary restrictions at our table. We did the tasting menu and while everything was great the Toro and Sea Bass were by far our favorites. Also the Splice Knot is the best cocktail I've personally had in a while (a little not sweet drink with lots of flavor if that's your preference). Only complaint is that it is a little dark inside but that is something we can def see past (no pun intended) based on service and food. We cannot stop raving about our experience.

All really, really good, but the basement where we were seated was kept far, far too dark. I don't know if this is thought to be ambient or cool, but it is simply unpleasant to not be able to see the menu, the food, or anything that is happening around you. Nobody I was with and nobody I have ever spoken to about this restaurant enjoyed the darkness. Just turn on the lights.

Fantastic restaurant and experience, no wonder everyone flocks here asap everyday. I highly recommend the 10 course chef tasting dinner. You get to choose each course or have the chef surprise you snd everything was do delicious you really cant go wrong with any dish. It is well worth it to upgrade to the optional premium 10 course for the wagyu sashimi. The japanese fried chicken is out of this world and i could have eaten 100 plates of them. You have to eat here to know how tasty the food is so i wont hold you, grab your date and get down to doubleknot pronto

Interesting set up. Bar/Restaurant combo. Hostess was sort of all over the place. Interior design was nice. Food below average and very small portions for the money paid. Service is also average. Their sushi counter seating is basically around the kitchen not specific sushi counter. For the location and chic atmosphere they have they could have offered better food. Would not come again

We’ve gone as a couple several times and adored the food and service

This experience is hopefully an outlier. We tried going as a larger group (party of 6) and were disappointed. Since the group was 3x as big, we were expecting 3x the portions. It seemed that the portions were only doubled (ex: 2 sushi rolls instead of 3, 2 fish fillets instead of 3). It was disappointing in comparison to our past experiences. It felt like we were getting shorted - paying more but getting less.

Additionally the wait staff would drop the dish off without explanation for the whole table. We told the food runner that the back half of the table could not hear them and they’d correct it short term. However, next time we saw them we had to remind them again that we could not hear them.

Also, a lit candle was spilled on the table when the plates were being dropped off.

We felt hurried out of the restaurant given the pacing as well which was disappointing. The check was presented while we were still finishing up dessert. Plates were cleared while entrees were still being worked through.

Overall - the group was disappointed at the portioning of the food and parts of the service. The restaurant service and experience was better for a duo.

Satisfactory selection of vegan options, nice that they now make tasting menu exceptions for party members with dietary restrictions, the crispy tofu was really good as well as the trumpet mushrooms. Appreciated the vegan mochi ice cream but sad to miss out on the gold leafed soft serve. The servers were also very knowledgeable and clear about which dishes were vegan.

I am very pleased with my experience here. I went with a group of 5 and ordered sample tasting, so we got to try a lot of different options they have. They have standard and an upgraded option (for just $10/person); it is well worth it to pay for the upgrade. I liked most of it. But what was exceptional is the liver goose, the duck scrapple, the wagyu and the sea bass.
They do a nice show (at the bar) with some of their drinks as well. In this video I recorded them making my double knot Manhattan. They fire some cinnamon and fill your cup first with the smoke. It actually gives it a nice taste.
