I called because I wanted to make a reservation for my mother’s birthday! Apparently if a party of 4 or more people join you automatically are required to pay a non negotiable 18% tip. That’s ridiculous, I love tipping my servers well but you tip based off the service and quality to be told you have to pay an 18% tip in order to eat there just absolutely makes you not want to ever go there. I’d highly recommend eating elsewhere it isn’t worth it! Just calling here gave me anxiety and it felt very hostile. I don’t expect this place to stay open much longer if this is how they are running it

My friend and I have gone here the past few years and it has been great. Recently we went back and things have changed a bit. The menu has a lot of changes, the presentation of the sushi was different. We actually asked if ownership had changed. Don't get me wrong, it's still good sushi. It was just odd. We had 3 people with us this most recent time, and one persons food came out awhile before any other, then our rolls came out one by one instead of collectively. It made for a different experience then we have had in the past. It felt a bit disconnected. We will still go back, because again, good sushi.

I'm only giving one star because otherwise, I can't leave a review. The entire experience was less than good. They had annoying Asian music playing on repeat, served food that tasted like it was previously frozen, and didn't look anything like what was ordered. Hopefully, I don't get food poisoning. Definitely will not be returning. Do not recommend it. And idc what you write in return, your food is nasty!

This is the go-to place for my dear friend and I to meet twice a year. We only do sushi and cocktails. Our favorite is the sweetheart roll, but all the sushi is exceptional. We always stay to catch up for hours, but our servers are patient and accommodating. I have eaten a lot of sushi in a lot of places. I never thought I would find the best sushi in Salem, OR!
Update: ate at the Hibachi side tonight for my parent's anniversary! It was so fun and delicious! Whether you're in the mood for sushi or something from the grill, this place is terrific!

EDIT: Went back today (1/3/25) hoping the other week was just a fluke, and got the same waitress, who had clearly been puffing on a pen or something because we had to repeat our order for one item 3-4 times. I hope this place retrains its wait staff. It makes the entire experience worse.

The food was great and soo tasty but the wait staff had some issues. We asked our waitress how much one of the market priced sushi was, she told us she would go check. 15ish minutes later she brings the dish to our table. Once again no mention of the price. Only once we got the check did we discover; those two peices ended up
being around $20 dollars. And what do we see once we are walking out? Our waitress in an empty section of the restaurant, puffing on a bright pink vape. I love the food here but considering this is place serves raw food how is it acceptable to have staff vaping inside?

We celebrate all our birthdays here and EVERYTIME family is in from out of town. Really.. a time I have an excuse to come here I do. We always do the hbatchi side and we all usually get fillets or New Yorks w the rice. Family usually get salmon, some have gotten shrimp. The salad though super simple, has the single best dressing I’ve ever tasted. Rice is phenomenal w amazing taste. Steaks…. Oh the steaks…. Not sure what they marinate them in but they are the most flavorful and tender steaks I’ve ever had. Because of this I bought a hibachi grill at home to try to perfect it but cannot. I highly recommend visiting here. The show is always fun and the staff are always friendly and more than willing to help.

I regret listening to our inner voice and not going after reading recent reviews.
Food was not good at all. Soup was watered down, salad dressing was clumpy.
Rice was hard and over cooked.
They tried to be slick and stick a 18% service charge on our bill. Apon asking what the service charge was for I'm told it's for partys over 4. We had 2 adults, 2 kids and a baby.

No where on the menu said anything about a service charge being added.

My family and I come here twice a month. We love it. It has gone down in quality recently, but we have still been coming. This Weekend we went and it was awful. They had to take our order THREE TIMES, and the guy taking the order wanted MY HELP to select the correct item on his order device. They made us wait for an hour for the cook to come out while our kids got really restless and hungry. I had to ask numerous times for a straw or replacement fork for my son and I ended up getting upset and going to get soy sauce for my wife myself because no one brought it. I even had to go get to-go boxes because we were ignored and left unattended. My son had to eat with his hands because he had no fork. No drink refills. It was simply terrible for how we have come to expect this place to usually be. The icing on the cake is that I left zero tip to express my frustration and then I discover that my server illegally charged me a 18% tip anyways that WAS NOT AUTHORIZED. I am PISSED. I expect a FULL refund after stealing from my credit card and offering no apology for the terrible experience on a 100 dollar dinner. As a very regular customer I cannot believe this. There were only a few other customers in the whole place. They were not even busy.

Food was good. Place is very geasy and dirty. Supposed to have private room for adult birthday party, ends up its private for 4 other large groups as well. Curtains to get into area stained with food and grease. Chef was very good at covering nicely dressed clients with food. I know, thats partially the deal but this guy,no warning, throwing food at people in mid conversation.
Staff was being trained, but the trainer allowed my group to be ignored while waiting to be seated while playing on her phone. Very expensive for chuck e cheese service and cleanliness.

Summary - food was fine. Wait staff service was good. Hostess clearly didn’t care about anything. Atmosphere was dark and dirty, bathrooms were disgusting.
Further detail if you care to read it -
The food - your average hibachi, the meat was good and veggies fresh - but the seasoning was lacking and sauce they used was cloying.
The service was friendly and fast.
Atmosphere- this is where things went downhill fast. I can get over the fact that the whole place is outdated and dark - but the visible cob webs in corners and the bathrooms - oh my god the bathrooms were abhorrent. They didn’t just need to be cleaned, but gutted and remodeled by the looks of the level of mold and other water damage in the women’s room. I felt dirtier leaving than I did going in. My friend used the men’s room and there was no soap to wash his hands - when he mentioned it to the hostesses they shrugged and didn’t move from their station. He inquired how their staff was washing their hands and the hostess said - oh we have another bathroom in the back - but that was it. Didn’t offer to give him hand sanitizer, fill the soap - nothing.

Brought my brother here for his birthday. We were there for over 2 hours. Two people that came in after us left before us, before we even got our food, mind you we had only ordered 1 item. My only concern is in the women’s restroom. One of the stalls has been out of service for over six months.
They have two hostesses now that were both sitting on stools and because I come from a restaurant background, I would be having them wipe down menus and doing some additional cleaning during slow times instead of being on their phones and chatting
Other than that, everything was amazing our waitress was amazing. It was a really good experience tonight.

My fiance took me here for my birthday last week. This was my first time and was really excited. While I did enjoy myself, the service was lacking. While friendly, they forgot to serve us our rice with our meal and an employee came and poured water in my fiancΓ©'s cup of Sprite and we had to get it replaced. Everyone was friendly it just seemed very unorganized and a bit frantic. The food we did get was fantastic and I would definitely go again. Hoping it was just one of those days.

We were in town for a graduation and the graduate chose this for dinner. We had reservations for 5pm but arrived close to 4 asking if we could move them based on the graduation being over faster than anticipated. They were happy to accommodate. We were promptly seated and water arrived quickly. Orders were take. And the set up for hibachi didn’t take long. The clear soup had a wonderful flavor, the salad had nice crisp lettuce and a delicious dressing.
I ordered filet Mingnon, steak and shrimp were ordered as were some hand rolls and miso soup. Everything was delicious, our chef was wonderful and we really enjoyed our time here. The food was amazing and next time I am in town I will for sure return. This restaurant has skyrocket to my Salem favorite!

This has been a family favorite of ours for a long time. However, their service and take out has absolutely tanked so much that we will not longer be supporting this place anymore. Last night 6/13/24 we placed an order of 3 entrees for pick up, paid extra for fried rice. We picked up, went home but didn’t sit down to eat right away. When we opened our boxes, they didn’t include any one of our rice. That’s half of our meals! Not to mention that they didn’t give us the salads like the menu states, but instead gave us each 4 individual pieces of veggies. 2 baby carrots, 1 piece of broccoli, and 1 mini corn. There were also more onions than meat in our teriyaki. Nearly an hour later at this point, I have to drive back across town to get the rest of my order. I explain what happened and the front hostess says she will put in an order right away. 9 minutes later a Chef comes to the front and speaks with a hostess about another order, where she mentions that I am still waiting on fried rice. Nearly 10 minutes of waiting and they hadn’t even started the rest of my order. I was really disappointed with the experience as a whole. I admit we could have checked our food in the car when we picked it up, but the whole point is that we shouldn’t have to check and just to expect good service. When we got home and actually ate the food, everything was very sub par. It’s unfortunate because they used to be a really lovely place. But when I pay $65 with another $15 tip for my meals and don’t even get half my order, that is themy last straw. No one offered anything to make up for this major inconvenience either.

You can't go wrong with fresh food, talented cooks, and a nice atmosphere.

This is one of my go-to places when I am craving something fresh. The cooks do a great job, not just in terms of the show, but also the meal. Also, my husband is super picky about fried rice and this is one of the few places since we've moved to Oregon that has received his stamp of approval.

Highly disappointing experience
We arrived as a party of two at 12:30 for lunch, (only one other couple was present in the restaurant) we ordered beef fried rice-lunch the rice was cold.
Pick 3 rolls: sweet potato roll & 2 veggie rolls
1 Bozeman roll. We received the rice 17 mins before getting the Bozeman roll, than 13-15 mins later we received the rest of our order.
We ask for the bill, we give her payment she runs our card for someone else’s order, takes our card again and talks to the other employee for 15 mins... In total we were there for 1hr and 15mins and took 3 rolls home….

Bozeman roll was the only good item we ordered but not worth the waste of time. The entire experience was distasteful.

One of the best sushi places I have found in the Salem area. I have never done the hibachi side of the restaurant, so I can't speak to that. I have been on the dine-in/sushi side several times and it is always a wonderful experience. I came here with my family for dinner. We did not sit at the hibachi tables. The seats were lumpy and seemed to be falling apart. The waiter was ok. Food started coming - the miso soup was so oversalted it was almost inedible. The salad was not green - only white iceberg lettuce. Salad dressing was actually partially frozen. My boyfriend got the mongolian noodles which had a maraschino cherry on top? I have never seen that before. Steak was overcooked in the noodles and noodles were also overcooked and clumpy. The sauce on the noodles was pretty bad. I got chicken teriyaki. The sauce was not sweet and served on a bed of uncooked onions?! Onions were not cooked in any dish.
Chicken was ok - it tasted like chinese food chicken with mushrooms, not teriyaki chicken. We had to ask for straws, waiter did not come to ask if we needed refills. I'm glad I didn't get any sushi as this place is questionable. It is pretty run down and empty for the most part. The staff was watching a basketball game. I would definitely go to one of the other many restaurants surrounding this one.

Long review ahead!

This is always our favorite spot to eat and we were excited to spend our valentines dinner here but the service was the worst we’ve ever had.

We arrived around 6:15pm and got told it was a half an hour wait and ended up waiting an hour which was no big deal it was a busy night. We got seated at 7:15 with three other sets of two and our server did take our drink orders right away but they didn’t come out for almost half an hour. The salad and broth soup came out after about 20 minutes when it’s normally out after a few, which again not a huge deal since they were busy.

After that half an hour everyone had finished and I could tell the whole table was anticipating our cook arriving as everyone verbally was saying how hungry they were.

I watched others coming and going and noticed a table across the restaurant that had been seated after us had a chef go to them which was disappointing but I get it. Another 15 minutes goes by and a table of teens gets seated one table over, at this point we had not had the server checked on our table and we had been waiting 45 minutes by now.

Not even five minutes later after the table of teens got sat, a chef comes out of the kitchen with his tray and our table was excited thinking the wait was over but instead he went to the table of teens who again was sat just five minutes ago.

I waited another ten minutes before finally pulling a different server to the side and asking her if she could find out where a chef for us was because not one, but two tables that were sat AFTER our table had already had a chef cooking for them.

She let our server know who then went back to the kitchen and you could tell the other staff members were pointing at our table and I assume talking about how long we were waiting. By now we had been waiting a whole hour and the chef cooking for the teens was even commenting on how long we had been waiting and went back to talk to the other staff himself. Two of the others at our table who were very upset also, left because they didn’t want to wait any longer.

Another ten minutes later and a chef finally comes out for us. I think the wait was so long that the other pairs of two hardly ate their food, my spouse finished his but it was hard to finish my food since the wait had been so long and I wasn’t very hungry anymore.

I wanted to comment to ask to speak to the manger but by that point I was ready to leave and get home. When we got our bills I was expecting something discounted or taken off the bill for the extreme wait that no one else had but there was nothing. No one came to speak to our table about what happened or to apologize. It actually felt like the staff was avoiding us as I’m sure they could see the whole table was upset.

The whole experience was disappointing and definitely ruined our Valentine’s Day. It will be a while before we return again. Hopefully they figure out a better system and treat patrons better after this has happened to them.

It really seemed like they have a lot of trouble setting up things by phone we made a reservation for 5 and they wrote it down with the wrong name for 5:30, It looked like they just wrote down multiple names trying to guess what they were told on the phone. They said they couldn't seat us all until everyone was here, we had two people who were going to be late so all 9 of us had to wait for them, and it looked like they had another large group waiting in front of the front desk. Upon entering the restaurant there was a weird smell and it looked almost empty and everyone was waiting at the front to be seated.

The backstory: Previous owners began struggling during covid. They proposed a deal with their best chef and he accepted essentially buying the whole thing from them. So, chef Jackie, he had no experience running a restaurant but does his best. He hired some younger people who had no experience either, but they did their best too. Fast fwd to 1yr later.
*Bartender/server/managerial extraordinaire Michah is a one man army and Jackie's best asset. This guy is the real deal and deserves a huge raise & praise for the bottle flipping bar tricks to inhuman short term memory requirements and poetically smooth tableside manner. Dude knows his craft. Honorable mentioned folks in his crew are: Rudy, German, Sara, Francesca, and Wilson are all up & coming.
The 3 star rating is for chef/owner Jackie's unfortunate communication skills, which are seriously lacking and is reflected in a lighting fast turnover rate and the sloppy presentations of dinner plates. Other than the prices, it is a good all around 5star spot.

I've been here a few times before and it used to be a great experience. Recently, the restaurant has started to decline. Tonight was, unfortunately, quite indicative of that decline. Service was abysmal. Some of the worst I've ever had in a sit-down restaurant. Before tonight, I've never had to grab my own plates and silverware at a hibachi place... and gotten charged an automatic 18% gratuity for the service i never received. Never got served water, got seated at a table with two other parties (and the table really couldn't support that many), never had the waiter check-in, got served soup and salad while the main course was being served and - and this is the best part - initially got charged for the meals of the other two random parties (after they had already been changed...,) before disputing the check.

There was one server and one hibachi chef serving four tables. Hire more staff, this kind of service is guaranteed to see you shutter your doors before long.

I had made a reservation, when we got there the host seemed confused and said β€œlet me see if we even have a table” which just started the whole experience off negatively.
Where we were sat was freezing cold.
The soup was great! The salad dressing was terrible and not traditional hibachi. The fried rice was unflavorful and hard. The steak was amazing but we had 6 people who ordered steak and the chef brought out 4 small steaks so we definitely did not get the 8oz that are advertised on the menu. That was disappointing. The vegetables were okay, just after they were done cooking instead of putting it on our plate the chef let them sit in the corner and grow cold. We also got barely any sauce we could still see the bottom of the trays…and they were forgetting items from our order that we had to ask for. Just overall kind of disappointing from a hibachi place and especially for the price you would expect more.

This was our first time dining here. I ordered the Philadelphia roll and the salem roll. Both rolls were overfilled with cream cheese. It completely overpowered the sushi. My fiance ordered the filet mignon & scallops. It was ordered rare. His filet came
out over cooked and cut in chunks. We saw our waitress very minimal and she never checked back to see how the food was until we asked for the check. Once she heard our experience there was no offer for anything else on the menu. Very poor experience.

We’ve gone here twice now. It has good food but there are just a few things that makes this restaurant shy of 5 stars. The vegetable tempura is soggy, wasabi is too green to be real and the ginger is dry. The salad dressing tastes like thousand island dressing instead of the Japanese salad dressing that’s normally used. The lemonade is something other than lemonade. Water is from the tap served in a plastic cup with no ice. The hibachi is pretty good. Filet mingnon is cooked perfectly and the seafood isn’t bad. This restaurant is plenty capable of 5 stars if these little things can be corrected. The service is good and the staff is friendly!!!

We got hibachi and sushi and was overall a bad experience, with the hibachi the rice had a lot of sauce and was crunchy, my steak was extremely salty, our veggies were undercooked and the chicken tasted how id imagine the grill did. A lot of what we ordered they forgot to give us so wed have to remind them, they basically missed my little brothers whole meal and was supposed to be given fried rice and they gave him white rice which ended up being crunchy too. then the sushi we got didn't have much flavor and the rolls were falling apart.

it was such a disappointing meal, we love hibachi and have been to many steakhouses but this had to be the worst one yet. the portions were extremely small too and typically with hibachi you're left full and with leftovers. nobody even wanted to take theirs home lol.

Food was bland, very overpriced for what it was. Service was inattentive, payed 100 for two people for teriyaki that was just dry unseasoned chicken with sauce slopped on top. I wouldn’t be as harsh if this was a 20 dollar meal but for 50 dollars I expect more. Service forgot chopsticks and soy sauce, like common at a Japanese resteraunt you can’t forget that sort of thing. Susbie was all right, but I was very dissaponted with the teriyaki.

This was my second attempt at Nagoya restaurant and it was equally disappointing. I have never had such overcooked, rubbery, bland tasting meat in my entire life. The fried rice was soggy and unflavored but filled with hard pieces of egg. The salad was, at best, 6 tiny shreds of lettuce. The only worthwhile piece of food, was my Mango Tango sushi roll. I have given up on this place. The price and quality of this food, along with the portions are not reflective. I expected better.

I went with my husband and it wasn't too bad. They didn't have Ikura or quail egg when we went so I was disappointed. Their spicy mayo was NOT spicy mayo. We didn't do hibachi as it was crowded. Looks like that side is more popular. Atmosphere was dark. I don't really enjoy dark restaurants because I can't see well. It was hard to even read the menu.
All in all, if you're looking for authentic Japanese food I would look elsewhere. Vibe and food was super modern. Not my style for when I'm really craving my Japanese food.

I was really hoping to have a good meal and find a good hibachi restaurant when I went here with my husband and one year old son. I was definitely being optimistic as when I got there the parking lot was completely empty and the place was so poorly lit. There was nothing but eggs in the fries rice and my son got extremely sick from eating the lobster and fried rice here he's been throwing up for hours since we left!!

This is a Chinese-operated joint, the staff is all Chinese, serving inauthentic appropriated cuisine. I ordered teriyaki chicken for delivery, but the chicken had no teriyaki sauce whatsoever. Dry, sliced chicken, flavorless. When I asked for a refund the staff redirected the blame to the delivery company. But it's clear that there was nothing wrong with the delivery; it was the restaurant which had failed to include a necessary ingredient in the food. Nonsensical and irresponsible. These Chinese are purely in it for the business, they don't care about their customers experience.

Wow! This place has REALLY gone down in quality and service over the past few years. My family and I used to eat here at least once a month a few years ago. When we went this week, the appetizer was frozen in the middle, there were cobwebs all over despite multiple staff just standing around, there were nearly no other customers there, and the miso soup had plastic in it. Seriously, pulled a piece of plastic from take out packaging out of my mouth! The manager came over and said there was no plastic in the kitchen. Then, he berated me by saying he would pay for the hospital visit. HORRIBLE service and never going back there. Giving three stars for food because decent sashimi is almost non-existent in Salem.

After coming here several times, we've found the sushi to be okay, but the entrees are not great. The teriyaki is bland. The tempura shrimp is not tempura, but rather has a corn dog sort of coating, and the food comes to the table barely warm. Maybe grab some sushi then head elsewhere for dinner.

I've been here many times but I just took my fiancee here for his first time. Our chef Gama was amazing. I highly recommend requesting him if at all possible. He is personable, funny, involved with his table, and knows what he's doing! The food was delicious as usual and cooked perfectly to our orders. Service prompt and friendly. They need to fix the front door. It clangs very loudly if you just let it shut on its own, and it's loud! Other than that we enjoyed ourselves on the sushi side. (You can eat where you watch them prepare it on the grill or you can sit on the sushi side.)
Our server was helpful and he gave us needed time to order.
We each had at least one sushi roll, although a few in our party of five ordered another roll to go.
The plates were decorated with fake flowers in a pretty way.

I got the hibachi duo meal that included the steak, shrimp, lobster and what not. It came with a little miso soup, a tiny WinCo spring mix salad with some off the shelf asian dressing. As for the entrΓ©e the main ingredient was butter. The fried rice, like 3 lbs of butter between the rice and food. The sea food not seasoned at all, it just tasted like fresh sea food, nothing special. The steak, again unseasoned, and was requested medium rare, but due to one person requesting medium well and it being chopped up on the grill, there's no differentiation. Everyone's steaks are just thrown together. The guy was pretty funny though. Yeah I was there for an experience, but it being a restaurant the food should be the main part of the experience and it didn't live up to the hype. Worth going once, but not again. Wish I could give this place zero stars. First for all we walked in and sat down to wait to be seated, there was a huge trail of ants inside the restaurant on the floor which was nasty.
Then it was 3 of us in our party, we happened to sit next to another group of 3 people that we knew, old friends. Then when we went to pay they automatically charged us a 10% gratuity saying we had a group of 4 or more when we were separate and they kept saying our party was 4 or more, which wasn’t even the case at all we KNEW the people there and we told him that, but since they don’t understand English well they called the manager. He still said the same thing, we paid it since they weren’t understanding. definitely won’t be back, they like to steal peoples money. On top of that the rice was hard and wasn’t good definitely won’t be back for horrible customer service!

The WORST Japanese food we have ever had---"Teriyaki salmon" was lukewarm salmon covered in cold teriyaki jelly that was obviously microwaved. The "side vegtables" were a baby corn from a salad bag, a baby carrot soggy from can and a piece of broccoli the size of a pinkie finger. It was so gross I felt like I was eating cafeteria food. My partner got tuna sushi that made him bloat and vomit when we got back to our hotel (In case anyone wants to debate "food poisoning" ...its the only thing we ate that day) The general attitude of the staff at Nagoya was also irritable. Please visit Meeka in Portland and take some notes on how a Japanese restaurant is run and how food should be prepared.
