*** 01/02/25 - 01/15/25 Masu Sushi will be closed for upgrades to our kitchen ***
Masu Sushi has been a staple of inventive Japanese cuisine in Portland, OR for over 20 years. Executive Chef and owner Tommy Shin leads a technique-driven team of chefs who create beautiful sushi, sashimi, and dishes of the highest quality ingredients sourced from the Pacific Northwest and Japan.
Our signature dishes from the kitchen include the Gindara Misozuke (Miso and Butter Marinated Local Black Cod) and the award-winning Yakiniku Charred Pork Cheeks. From the sushi bar, try local favorites like the spicy Rip City Roll and the citrusy Lioness. We have many options for gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian guests - all are welcome.
This is my favorite upscale sushi place! The food is delicious and the flavor combinations of the rolls are inventive. Ambiance is great. It has a romantic lounge vibe with soft lighting, and it's quiet enough to make conversation easily. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu and can make good recommendations. It's also one of the few sushi places I've seen that consistently has blue fin tuna! The otoro is my favorite. Highly recommend!

The sushi had good flavor, and the chef's skills were evident. The rice was perfectly cooked. However, the calamari portion was small and only mediocre in taste. Overall, the restaurant has a beautiful ambiance and offers good service, but the food was average.

Drop everything and go bask in the immaculate, warm vibes of this place. The lighting alone will make you want to stay forever. 🌅
Nestled in the heart of downtown Portland, this sushi restaurant is nothing short of a transcendent experience. The moment you step inside, and make your way upstairs... you find yourself greeted by such a warm, elegant ambiance that it immediately sets the stage for the gastronomic adventure ahead.🍶
The sushi here isn’t just sushi—it is abundantly clear it is love and care translated through art. Every single dish I tasted was a true testament to the chef's skill, knowledge, and reverence for tradition, paired with an affectionate kiss of creativity. The fish is impossibly fresh. You really don't even need the soy sauce. The rice was absolute perfection. It's hard to find a sushi *experience* quite like this. 🍣
Standouts include the melt in your mouth otoro and hotate nigiri, the mind-blowing special I can't stop thinking about... the salmon flight. The salmon belly was OUT of this world with a tiny bit of yuzu gel... all I can say is I wish I could put that on absolutely everything. Then there is the miso-butter sauce on the black cod that had me in a chokehold. I could have embarrassed myself by licking the plate but held restraint. 🍽
I can't forget about dessert, the Okinawa sweet potato butter cake will have you punching the air... the salty-sweet miso caramel, again... puts you in a position to want to lick a plate. The chocolate dome with the raspberry and yuzu in the middle of the mousse is enough to push people over for. 🍋
Service is impeccable. Our server, Lucy, intuitively anticipated our needs, gave excellent and precise recommendations, enhancing the experience without ever being intrusive. Every detail, from the handcrafted ceramics to the thoughtfully curated sake menu, is a reminder that you are in the hands of extraordinary and passionate professionals who take pride in their craft. Truly, a haven for sushi aficionados and culinary explorers alike. 🥢
But WAIT, I can't forget their house-made chili crisp... I ate every tiny piece of garlic bit out of it and wish they sold jars of it. 🌶 Sorry, Lao Gan Ma...
I'm already itching to go back to try the kaarage, the udon, and whatever new brilliance has landed on their specials menu.
If you're still reading this review at this point, you might as well just make some reservations. 🤷🏻♀️

Run don’t walk. Beautiful space in an upper level of the building with large windows looking out into the trees and sky. You’re immediately greeted by friendly, smiling staff. Our server, Lucy went over the menu with us and checked back in if we had any questions as we were making sure we looked over each amazing item on the menu. We ordered an array of Maki and Nigiri along with a couple other items like the oysters which were phenomenal - nothing like we’ve had before. The Nigiri had beautiful flavors with perfectly tender rice. Our Maki had Tuna and crab which was then tempura fried in the lightest batter ever which gave texture without taking from the overall flavors. The St Helen’s Volcano was presented flaming and had such an amazing flavor profile to round things out. I couldn’t decide between two cocktails so Lucy suggested I put Tequila in the Good Bye Kitty instead of vodka which I loved. Lucy was super knowledgeable on the menu but also had a humorous side to her and was joining in the jokes to make our experience a memorable one! Don’t miss this spot and be sure to ask for Lucy!

My husband really wanted to go to a sushi place for his birthday dinner so we went on the hunt to find an awesome spot to celebrate and we came across Masu.
This place was nothing short of fantastic! The ambiance, food and overall experience was so fun and perfect for the occasion. The sushi itself was so worth the wait. We ordered the Calamari and 3 sushi rolls (Lotus, Lioness and the Nemo) and all were fantastic but our favorite was the Lioness you must try! But I can't imagine anything on the menu not being worth a try. Thank you Masu for helping us celebrate we will be back!

What really sets Masu apart is their desserts! As one of the few Japanese restaurants in the area offering such unique and delicious sweet options, they never disappoint. I always make room for dessert after enjoying an array of nigiri and a refreshing salad, both of which are equally satisfying. If you're a type who appreciates good design, Masu's timeless restaurant interior is definitely worth checking out as well.

I am not accustomed to the better end of sushi and in fact haven’t enjoyed sashimi in the past. However, I visited Masu several weeks ago and was blown away. I was with a group of about 10 and we shared many items. Every single bite was amazing. It was fresh and very enjoyable. Everything was presented attractively and was so delicious. The service was friendly and accommodating. The cocktails were anlso fantastic. And the setting was beautiful.

The food was average, not the best especially for its price. The servers kinda just didn't care about us, and they knew it was our first time there, in general the main part that was good, is that I wasn't alone there, so the place sucks, the food is mid and I wish I would've spent my money elsewhere. the music was so loud I could barley hear my friend.

First time here in 2022: Amazing service and while I initially was skeptical of the prices the portions are generous and extremely well done high end sushi/rolls. Had a great time. Especially enjoyed the death by sushi roll and the calamari.
Was nice that they had real wasabi available on request as well.
2nd time here in 2024 the food was amazing but prices have definitely gone up noticably, and the service was fine but not as exceptional as my first time. Still great, but not as firmly a "must visit".

After a less-than-perfect recent Birthday celebration, a friend and I returned, and had a great evening. Chef Tommy, his staff, and Michelle, our server, made our visit a very positive experience.
Favourites such as the Kale Salad, Shrimp Tempura, Hamachi Kama, super sushi, and of course, Taru Sake, continue to be high on my list of repeats. Thank you, Chef Tommy, for reassuring us that Masu remains the very best Japanese Restaurant in Portland.

This was such a hidden gem in downtown! Cocktails were unique, Japanese-inspired, and refreshing (mine was lychee and my husband's was sakura blossom). The sushi was fantastic, and our favorite dish was actually not even sushi, but calamari! It was so flavorful; I could eat it every day. We had a negative interaction with a patron at the bar who was apparently a very unpleasant "regular"; he was behaving inappropriately (invading my physical space, becoming handsy, etc.) as well as making racist remarks to my husband who is a person of color, and the staff immediately removed him from the restaurant and moved us to a safer, more comfortable location. You never expect to deal with people like that when you're out on a date, so it was sort of a shock to us at the moment, but Lucy & the other women on shift last night were incredibly empathetic and supportive about the situation and ensured that we could still enjoy our date night despite the bad interaction. Thank you, Masu, for providing a safe atmosphere, incredible service, and delicious food & drinks!

My husband and I love this place. We've been here several times and the staff is always nice, the drinks are good, and the food is delicious. We often just get sushi, but the one time we got the blackened cod and it was DELICIOUS. The atmosphere is great, with large old school windows. It's all on the second floor.

With the absolutely beautiful decor with large windows encapsulated with the view of trees, to the incredibly delicious sushi rolls that melted in our mouths, this is one of the best sushi places I've been to in Portland. I'm disappointed I did not try this local restaurant earlier, it was amazing!! All the employees were really welcoming, they did an amazing job making sure tables and seats were clean and the server was welcoming.

I want to first start by saying the only reason I'm using a public platform to communicate is because there isn't a direct email or contact listed on their website- which I think is far more appropriate than racing to the public and sharing a negative experience without giving someone/a business the opportunity to know what occurred, and make it right.
As a nearly nine year customer of Masu, what happened this past weekend was very unfortunate, and shouldn't happen at any restaurant under these circumstances. With a 6:00 PM reservation, and the bill hitting our table at 7:55 PM, and paid by 8:01 PM, the waitress asked us to leave because they were behind on seating reservations. Yes, you read that right. She asked us to leave. She didn't ask us to sit at the bar, or offer us the lounge and a beverage, she simply asked us to leave so they could continue seating because they were behind. Not only is this extremely unprofessional, she asked if we'd like more water, and when we kindly declined, is when she asked if we wouldn't mind leaving. What? Not only should this communication come from the server, directly, who's built that relationship at the table during the hour(s) of service, this isn't proper etiquette, so for her to feel supported in that request by staff, is where it frustrates me. Masu isn't the cheapest option, and it isn't the most expensive option but each time we dine, our bill is $200+ and from the time we were served our first food item (6:35 PM) to being presented our bill at 7:55 PM, I'd say we're just fine. Not overstaying our welcome, etc.
My hope is that this is an important reminder on how a situation like ours may be handled differently, and that someone other than us may have reacted quite differently, rightfully so. In a city that is struggling with a very tough economy to say the least, specifically restaurants, this is the last thing I'd want a customer to experience.
Masu has some of the best sushi, wonderful atmosphere that is always full of people, and wonderful staff, but this was simply unacceptable, and I hope this prevents this from happening in the future again.

Masu's Sushi, located in the heart of Oregon, is a culinary gem that offers a unique dining experience. The restaurant, which takes its name from the traditional wooden box used to serve sushi, combines a blend of Japanese tradition with a touch of modern innovation. My recent visit to Masu's Sushi left me with an array of impressions and flavors.
Situated in a bustling area of Oregon, the restaurant's exterior is unassuming, and you might almost miss it if not for the subtle yet elegant sign. However, stepping inside, you are transported into a cozy and inviting space. The interior is a harmonious fusion of contemporary design with nods to Japanese aesthetics. The lighting is warm, and the decor includes elements of traditional Japanese art and design, creating a sense of cultural depth and authenticity. While it's not a large venue, the intimate setting adds a personal touch, making it a perfect place for a special dining experience.
The star of the show at Masu's Sushi is undoubtedly the cuisine. The menu is a culinary journey that showcases a wide variety of sushi and sashimi options, as well as creative fusion dishes. The focus here is on using fresh, high-quality ingredients to craft memorable flavors. The sushi chefs at Masu's demonstrate an impressive level of expertise and a passion for their craft that shines through in every dish.
The sushi and sashimi offerings are a testament to the precision and artistry of Japanese culinary tradition. Each piece of sushi is a work of art, with the fish so fresh it practically melts in your mouth. The subtle interplay of flavors, from the sweetness of eel to the delicate umami of uni (sea urchin), showcases the chef's skill and attention to detail.
What truly sets Masu's Sushi apart is its unique fusion creations. The menu includes inventive rolls that combine traditional Japanese ingredients with unexpected twists. The Dragon Roll, for example, features succulent shrimp tempura, creamy avocado, and a drizzle of eel sauce for a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The Green Tea Ice Cream for dessert is a must-try, offering a delightful blend of crispy and creamy.
While the atmosphere at Masu's Sushi is more intimate than the grandeur of Applebee's, it's a charming and memorable experience for any food enthusiast. The genuine appreciation for Japanese cuisine and the dedication to creating memorable dining moments make Masu's Sushi a standout dining destination in Oregon. Drove all the way from San Rafael just to eat here so worth it

Great atmosphere but that's about all it had going for it. The salmon roe was chewy. The sushi rice was so overcooked it was practically gelatinous. And the miso soup was bland and nothing more than broth. This was probably the worst sushi I've had in Portland.

Generally I love Masu for the ambience and quality of food. I usually book when Emmanuel (the Sake Samurai) is working and she is very well trained in understanding Masu's extensive menu.
My only disappointment is that we went to celebrate two birthdays and an anniversary. They asked if we were celebrating a special event, but then did nothing to recognize the celebration. So, I am a bit deflated on the experience now. "
Great sushi and sake, but I would not go there for celebrating special events.

Mediocre quality fish. Below average presentation. The server said that they get their fish shipment on Thursdays (unsolicited) but it really did not seem that fresh. Nigiri was very bland … I’m a nigiri fan and enjoy sashimi too. The rolls however, were above average. Dinner was $200 for two people with drinks. I’m good paying that for a delicious meal…. This one was not. There are better high end options in the city and suburbs for sure.

By far one of the best Portland dining experiences I've ever had and I've lived in the area my entire life. The sushi was top tier and so were the cocktails. The wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
My friend had left his credit card behind by accident. When I went to retrieve it the next day one of the staff, manager I believe, let me in a few minutes early and even vouched for me to the bartender who had been keeping the card safe. I really appreciated that.
They really care about providing a great experience. Without a doubt I rate it a 10/10.

Hmm Ive been on the hunt for a new sushi restaurant that I can call my favorite. I wish I could call it my favorite but I cannot.
The sushi is good, but not for the price. This makes me sad because the restaurant is so gorgeous! The hostess has very weird energy, not the nicest… Its sad because the environment is so nice and the sushi does taste really fresh however- the flavor combos on the sushi are not the best. The vegan sushi is actually really good. I would recommend that.

Tokyo drop ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- lychee puree was amazing
- not too sweet
Kale salad ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- what you'd expect
- sort of gingery, definitely a sesame ginger dressing
- definitely massaged kale
Death by sushi ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- tiniest bit of spice from the mayo
- really creamy and soft on the inside
- the fried part isn't overly salty
- I thought it was soggy but it was actually just a soft roll
Otorro ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
- falls apart in your mouth
- really good, the texture was fantastic
- surprisingly the strawberry works
- unsure if worth the price though.
Assorted sushi ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨
- loved the variety
- would say the salmon was definitely the best by far

My family group of 3 sat at the sushi bar. The staff and chef were efficient and friendly. The sushi chef was very informative and helpful. This is a review I'm not pleased to make. Our calamari appetizer was excellent, my family and myself all enjoyed our sushi rolls. Here's the reason only 4 stars. The chef informed us of all the fresh fish and specials, the reef giant squid stood out to me as recommendation from the chef.
I'm very open to leaning on a chef's recommendations.
I ordered that particular dish, I cannot remember the dish name.Onwas expecting a marinated squid tentacles that were soft and savory. The squid came as 2 pieces of Nigri. The first piece was not good; chewy, not any good flavor. The 2nd piece (yes, I had the 2nd piece), hoping for a better result, unfortunately, 2nd piece was almost double the size as the first, I may have chewed on this piece 10 minutes, my daughter was looking at me like" are you ok"? I cannot describe the taste, but, I was thinking "Animal kingdom"; I'm going to battle this squid to the end... Since I was at the sushi bar, I did not want to embarrass the sushi chef, however if I would have had paper napkins I would have spit it out, however, I endef up chewing as much as I could to I get to the point it couldn't be broken down anymore, I swallowed the rest with a gulp of water.
I'll be back, but I have bit of PTSD today.

Masu is wonderful, it’s perfect for a date night, the fish is always fresh, and they have a nice selection of sake. I especially like the calamari and sitting at the sushi bar.

This is one of the places that I'm so glad survived the pandemic. I loved it before, and can say it has maintained its quality in food and service. Been back twice and it is one of my favorites in the neighborhood. I always get the specials and have never gone wrong. The staff are helpful and friendly without being overbearing. Just great.

Food was pretty good. Good service and nice, thoughtful menu. Cocktails were great too. The sashimi wasn't quite 5 stars, but I'd give them 4.5 if I could.

Visiting from KC and we had to get sushi. This place wasn’t our first choice but it was getting late and places were closing up. I’m so happy we chose this spot. Some of the better sushi we have had, and the Gyoza dumplings were unreal. Drinks were also fantastic. Cannot recommended enough.

Bad service and was chased onto the street by the server and asked why she didn't get a bigger tip. That's not how a country boy rolls.

Now I am NOT a person that would consider himself a sushi person, but this is not the first time I’ve been here. That being said this IS the first time I came here without the hibachi. So before I go into the rest of the review, let me just say, please bring back the hibachi.
That being said…
It was really very good, Death by Sushi was the most memorable, the fire was sexy and I missed grabbing a photo before it went out, however, definitely had some swag. The service was great, attentive helpful without being too present. Concrete walls carried sound so some areas were harder to hear in but all in all a great experience that I recommend to all those sushi lovers and non. I did not need a reservation but seating without a reservation was limited.

I have been waiting their food for 50 minutes.

Great food and friendly staff. One of the best places to go if you're a spicy tuna roll and sake fan. They have a large selection of traditional hot and chilled sake's. If you buy a small bottle and don't finish it, then you can take it home! Super tasty food, it's definitely a go-to spot for when you're wanting good sushi

I placed an order on Grubhub at 3:23 for a 5:30 pickup. Masu Sushi confirmed the order for a 5:30 pickup at 4:18. I arrived at Masu at 5:25 and was first told they didn't have any orders on Grub Hub. The host then looked at the iPad, found my order (which I am assuming she didn't realize was there prior) and said it'd probably take 20-30 minutes and they may not have all of the items. She then proceeded to tell me the order will now take an hour to prepare. I had to call Grubhub to cancel the order because I was not waiting that long and I drove 25 minutes to get here. The restaurant would not call to cancel it. Would not recommend coming here for take out at all

Consistently fantastic sushi and great knowledgeable service. Check the specials for fun surprises. The main entrance requires you to walk up a flight of stairs. If you have folks in your party with mobility issues they do have an elevator that can be used so give them a call to coordinate. Reservations can be made by calling and are recommended. Due to Covid the sushi bar is currently closed but they still have seating around the regular cocktail bar. Great spot.

farmed salmon—i used to love masu, it *was* my top sushi spot in pdx. however, my most recent visit revealed what looked & tasted like farmed salmon, i actually had to use soy sauce (which i never do).
i won't be coming here or recommending again.
still 2/5 because service & ikura were still great, but farmed fish is a big NO from me.

Such a cool location for a sushi restaurant! It's upstairs next to a high-rise building. 🏢
Delicious sushi 🍣! We had the Pearl Roll, Kenzo Roll and the Negi Hama. Great ambiance - music wasn't too loud, but be mindful that people's conversations could make the place louder due to the high ceilings.
Highly recommend making reservations ahead. We made reservations for 7:40pm but didn't get seated until 8:15pm because the restaurant was super busy on a Saturday night. Will definitely come back again.

Eh. Place is alright.
But they also force a tip onto the end of your bill and when you ask why. They say "you weren't going to tip anyway." How unprofessional. Your staff has no right to assume anyone's financial situation and delegate your own tip based off of that. I ALWAYS tip. But after that act, they didn't deserve it. Or returning business.

Drinks and food were great! But I had a very rude waitress. I saw that 20% tip was just tacked onto the bill. When I asked about it, she said "you weren't gonna tip anyway". I was going to tip and I told her, but she said she would just take it off even after I told her not to. Not cool to just force a tip on a two party table.

Actually never ate the sushi
Waited 55 minutes for two pieces of nigiri and two rolls. It was 9pm on a Monday and not crowded. No explanation for the wait and never asked if we wanted needed anything while we waited. Pathetic
Got it to go and left it in the box.

This restaurant is stylish with extremely friendly staff and amazing food. While the prices are expensive, the food and drinks are definitely worth it! The chef even made us a special sushi roll off the menu as I’m a vegetarian and was looking for more options. To say I can’t wait to go again is an understatement ☺️

I booked a reservation for 5 people Via a phone call with the restaurant and when we got there today they were closed for a private party when I asked why they didn't let us know they told me they did call us and sent an email through Open Table been table I'm not sure who they sent an email through Open Table too but it wasn't me because I booked direct and never provided an email and the person I talked to was extremely rude I'm really disappointed in the quality of customer service from this restaurant And the attitude is absolutely unnecessary. I'm really not sure why they lied but I was never contacted I've ever contacted despite what they said.

Ordered a Death by Sushi, Kaarage, and a Kenzo rolls, along with a few drinks. This is hands down one of the best sushi places I have had the opportunity to dine in. The fish was fresh and refreshing and the restaurant has bold flavors that have you wanting to come back for more. This restaurant is easily my top contender in Portland and I'm excited to come back during my next trip.
