At Bamboo Sushi, we make every decision with the highest regard for this world and the people in it. From transparency in how we source our food, to reducing our carbon footprint, to enriching the communities that we live in. The Portland born Japanese eatery goes beyond sushi, extending to shareable plates, rolls, nigiri and a delicious wagyu burger, with cocktails and sake to boot.
Everything from the food to the service and the environment was absolutely great. Food was very fresh, especially the seafood. Hard to find fresh seafood this great. Flavor was just right. They even have real wasabi that is harvested locally!
Good for families, they're very helpful and patient in explaining the menu. Highly recommended.

[gluten free reviewer] Bamboo doubles as a favorite happy hour spot & is always my favorite place to celebrate a special occasion with my partner. Having a hard time deciding on a roll? The green machine and unicorn rolls never get old. Top it off with an order of the citrus salted king salmon nigiri - it might be the best thing you taste… ever. Dessert option that slaps: black sesame brownie.
The servers at all locations are always so kind and seem like they enjoy their job. We have always had a pleasant experience no matter the location we visit.
Plus! Their cocktails and sake selection are the icing on the cake. If you think bamboo is mainstream and not legit or don’t trust it because it’s a chain, my recommendation is to at least give it a chance because you’ll likely be converted into a repeat customer immediately!!!

Bamboo is an often frequented establishment for me and my wife. The food met our high expectations and the service was very attentive without being obnoxious. We ordered the wagyu sliders, edamame for appetizers, my wife had a custom hand roll on soy paper and I had the specialty Roll “The Unicorn”.

My friends and I came here for a bite before the brat rave at the Crystal Ballroom. It was so so delicious! I got pleasantly surprised by our server (I suck with names, I'm so sorry helpful pleasant waiter-dude 😫) that everything I thought had gluten for sure, did NOT. I thought I'd never get to try karaage or anything tempura without painstakingly making it myself!! It's all rice flour-based and so delicious! I definitely will be frequenting this place again!!

Every time I come here I want it to be my last. The vegetarian options are fine, nothing to return for. To me, they are overwhelming. Fried green beans or fried shishito peppers in sushi sound fine, but a whole roll and it gets to become an overpowering texture and taste. I got the brussel sprouts and they weren’t good. I think it might be fine if you share them between 3-4 people but they tasted burned and overly sweet, like they had too much time soaking in the sauce.
Atmosphere: it’s fine. Like every other restaurant it depends on the other patrons. We got seated next to a loud party of 8, so it wasn’t great for a while.
Service: it wasn’t good. My partner had three dishes served and finished before I got mine. When I did receive my order the food was rolled on all sides of the plate but I fixed it for the photo. The two staff that waited on us seemed indifferent, and our table had plates piles up for 3/4 of the meal that weren’t taken away until I stacked and asked.
Check out: the waitress held the credit card reader in a way that you can’t hold it. Made me feel pressure to just select whatever and get out. The lowest percentage on the device without entering your own number is 18%. 😑 I need to take more time and not allow myself to feel rushed next time because I didn’t feel they deserved what they got.
The service wasn’t great. The vegetarian options do not have a subtle flavor palette and the texture is novel but redundant.

I’m absolutely in love with one specific sushi roll they offer—the Green Machine, specifically the vegan version. It's like heaven for my taste buds, and I refuse to try other rolls because this one is just that amazing. It’s a healthy addiction!
I’ve also tried the edamame and some other rolls, but nothing compares to the Green Machine—it’s by far the best.
I’ve never dined in, so I can’t comment on the service, but their takeout is excellent. The interior looks nice from what I’ve seen, but I haven’t had the chance to experience it in person yet.
I’ll definitely be coming back for another round of the Green Machine!

I’ve walked by this place many times, and finally tried it! Love the interior design of the restaurant. We went in around 8pm, no wait. Our server was very helpful after learning it was a first time visit. I landed on the Friday the 13th roll, and the spicy tuna crispy rice. Delicious! The truffle on the crispy rice, yum! The food also came out so quickly, bless! I was so hungry. It was a great first time experience, I would return to try more.

Haven't even gotten our food yet, but I struggled to read the menu because the music is so loud and the dishes being clanked and stacked less than 10 ft from us. Regardless of what the food tastes like I'm just gonna eat as fast as possible and then get the rest to go. This is a horrible place to go if you have sensory issues AT ALL! i feel like I have to raise my voice to talk to my girlfriend. 🙄

Extraordinarily boring and mediocre. Our server had far too many tables to attend to and hence was not a good ambassador to this restaurant at all. He was very rushed when we got him (which was rare). As with all Bamboo locations, their vision for sustainable just means they give you paper thin pieces of fish at 30% higher prices than other sushi places. The miso soup came last, I joked it was our desert since we intended to order desert but never had a chance to because of our aforementioned busy server.
My favorite is how the tip screen defaults to 28% to start, ha ha ha!! Masu is a far better, more upscale experience and it is priced similarly. I guess Bamboo gets busy when they get full...

The food is SO good, but the portion was too small compared to what I paid. I left hungry. I struggled a little with my choices since I wasn't familiar with Japanese food, and the menu didn't make it easy for me. The waiter was nice, though. I had to google search for more information. If you want to have fun with food, this is the place to go, but if you want to leave full, I suggest you eat something before you come here.

Absolutely melt in your mouth delicious! This is one spot where the price tag feels actually justified. A filling meal could cost $20~$70. Generous portions of fish and a well crafted menu. I found the rolls to be particularly good. Service was great although I really don’t like when servers use the hand held device for payment- it just feels a bit awkward. Nevertheless this was such a treat and I look forward to coming back.

Best sushi in all of Portland! High quality at now a high price and it's well worth it. They have real wasabi that they can grate fresh onto your plate, fantastic cocktails, and you absolutely have to get the shishito peppers!!
When I first started going to bamboo they were front and center all about sustainably farmed fish and it is where I got the several fish watch wallet pamphlets that I carry with me detailing the ethically and non-ethically fished species from best to worst. This is no longer a part of the experience at bamboo, but it always stuck with me.
2024 update: still one of if not the best sushi in Portland especially when it comes to price. 6 people well fed for $217! I'll keep coming back.

We love Bamboo Sushi ans are regulars at the one in Seattle. The food is always so great. We are in Oregon for a friend's wedding and there is no gf food out here (an hourish outside of portland) near our hotel, so we ordered crispy garlic tofu and rice to go so we can eat dinner safely. Ordering went smoothly and everyone was very nice and professional, however come dinner time (and over an hours drive away) we find that there is no rice. On me for not checking, but it was very disappointing to not really have a proper dinner when there isn't anywhere out here for us to eat.
I called and they are refunding the cost of the rice, which I appreciate a lot!! But we were still left in a pickle because of it.

1:05 on a Thursday. I walked in to place a walk up takeout order on a very slow day with only a few tables. The hostess told me that was going to be 30-35m— I was fine with waiting. Now, I am not trying to make a wild accusation but like other reviewers, today will be my last time at the chain. Another older Caucasian lady walked in and did the same after me with a walk up order. When she heard the wait was 30m, she groaned and moaned outloud, “I don’t know, that’s a loooong time to wait” and the hostess said she could push her order and then within 10m the takeout order was handed to her. I was still waiting on the bench for another 20m. “That was fast!” She said and left. Immediately, I realized what happened. This older white lady couldn’t be made to wait but because I was willing to wait, they were going to let me wait until whenever worked best for them. I couldn’t handle it, my emotions came over me feeling like the most blatant disrespectful experience I have ever had in Portland in all my years of coming here. I opened my mouth in front of the people waiting to be seated and asked: “Do you think that’s right that you did that?”. She said that because “she ordered a California roll and [I] ordered nigiri that hers was faster to make” but that honestly isn’t right. I told her that wasn’t right and I let her seat other people because I didn’t know how to process my emotions in the moment. After waiting another 20m, fuming but trying to exercise grace, I got up and told the guy manning the nigiri zone that I was leaving because at that point I had been there for 35m. I realized he was just the messenger when he explained he received the order with a fulfillment date of 1:55p—my jaw dropped, again realizing that my hypothesis about them being willing to make me wait as long as was convenient was true. He explained couldn’t start on my order because he was assigned a different zone and that coupled with the time sent for fulfillment kept him from starting on it. So much red tape for a sushi restaurant; what is this, the IBM of sushi?? I told him he was just the messenger and that I was just letting him know I was leaving. I told him to keep the price I paid, the $3 tip for takeout, and that I will never be returning to spend another dollar here. “Have a nice day,” he managed to say with kindness that I appreciated despite feeling so hurt by today’s experience. I loved Bamboo Sushi when I came 10 years ago but I can’t love it anymore.. furthermore, I hope the white hierarchy doesn’t happen to anyone else because it’s just not cool. It was so unacceptable for so many reasons and I am happy to donate the $40 for them to never come back, ever. I hope the management at least consider about how the hostess conducted business at their establishment today. They lost a devoted customer because I looked around and realized that all the employees I could see and the patrons were all Caucasian too, so I felt extra uncomfortable and vulnerable. My heart is heavy writing this because I loved this restaurant for so long because of its sustainability mission, but it’s become something else to me. Goodbye, Bamboo Sushi— it was great while it lasted.

In my opinion this place is for the experience. ..The “sushi” was okay and upsetting for the price because it came out warm and had me wondering if I should eat it. service was minimal, she went on break as soon as our order was in (taking breaks all fine but no one ever came back the whole time and I had to ask for everything from a different employee), however it is very clean (other than the restroom) and the people are nice but we will not be returning.

Tuna, albacore, yellowtail nigiris are mediocre, stick to things like spicy tuna, spicy albacore for any flavor.

At most two stars because the place is freezing cold in the summer and they refused to let us sit outside. But one star because the sushi is way overpriced relative to the quality; the uni is too fishy, the hamachi too spicy, and the saba is falling apart, has a muddy color, and tastes weird.

Edit: I reached out to the restaurant as requested in their response to this review. I received an initial follow up email and was notified I would be contacted further to discuss my experience, but was never contacted. They did, however, add my email address to their promotion list, which is incredibly disrespectful. I have reduced my rating further to one star due to this lack of professionalism.
Original Review: Food was mediocre but not terrible and reasonably priced. I alerted the server that I have a severe pea allergy, but when I was served my mixed green salad it had pea sprouts on it. The server said they were "just microgreens", apparently not knowing that microgreens are a general group and can include pea sprouts. I ended up picking them off. Unfortunately, my partner and I also ended up with food poisoning from this restaurant. Very poor experience.

Me: I eat a LOT of sushi
The Pros: simple unique takes on classic sushi recipes. You distinctly taste each flavor of the rice, the fish, and garnish in perfect balance. Each plate is of adequate size allowing you to order to your appetites content and if you go over get a bowl of the miso at the end of the meal - not to salty but with a depth and body not expected from a simple soup.
The cons: seating is a little tight. Don’t be afraid to sit as a party at the sushi bar. The staff are pleasant but not intrusive.

This place was okay! Dishes had hard water all over them, which was a turn off due to the price of this restaurant. The service was mediocre for how busy it was when we ate there, order all your rolls because you may be waiting to order additional. Chefs were great, rolls were tight and came out quick with the help of kitchen staff. I would not go back due to price and experience we had.

We absolutely love bamboo sushi and everything it has to offer. Unfortunately we have made the mistake of dining at this location more than few times hoping for a different outcome and every time, (even with reservations) it has felt like they absolutely do not want us there. We had a reservation for an anniversary and it seemed like they didn’t believe we were celebrating a special occasion. Even with reservations they made us feel like they were not happy we came. I would say maybe it was a one time thing but sadly it’s happened many times. Also if you know you’re going to be busy during happy hour maybe have more servers during that time? Maybe servers won’t feel absolutely pissed that they have to do their job and take it out on their guest. Again this has happened on many occasions especially at this location. I understand serving is not ideal but also maybe don’t be a server if you hate people?

Overall a decent meal. We came in and had a reservation but had to wait a bit for the table to be ready which was odd given the place was generally empty. Slightly odd but no big deal.
Went ahead and got the Waygu burger which I had head strong reviews for. It certainly didn’t lack in size which I appreciate at 1/2 lb. Flavor was tasty and indulgent which cheese and onion goodness. The tempura onion ring on the side looked impressive but probably wasn’t my favorite treatment. The rolls I did not have and thus can’t speak to but looked pretty tasty and of course is probably the move here.
Wouldn’t rush back but a nice spot for a quick bite.

Sushi and small plate restaurant in the west side downtown area. The sushi rolls here are quite tasty, and the crunchy rice is better than most places.
The ingredients all taste quite fresh which can make or break good sushi, but overall it’s nothing mind blowing. The garlic chicken was pretty mediocre. The tempura vegetables were nice and lightly fried, the sauce provided was adequate.
Overall I’m glad that I tried it out, but considering the pricing to quality ratio I can say that I’m glad I went but I wouldn’t go again.

My family and I love the Bamboo Sushi in Cedar Hills. The downtown one was not as good an experience but not a bad one either. We visited for dinner around 6pm on a Friday.
Green Machine (typically vegetarian) with Salmon added is a hit. The cauliflower is a hit too. The Karaage Chicken wasn't good it was surprisingly mild and dry. We salvaged it by dipping in extra sauce from the green machine roll. The house sake' was lukewarm and not hot.
The service was on point; friendly, quick and helpful.
The atmosphere was 'harried'. The bar area was disorganized and not a good vibe around which to hang. The fridge door was broken so people kept dropping it with a loud bang. The usher was confused. It just felt off, compared to sharp staff and energetic vibe of the Cedar Hills location.
All in all, I like the Bamboo Sushi menu and the favorites will keep me coming back.

First time here, and absolutely loved the food and atmosphere! The food came out extremely quick and was so delicious! The only reason I’m not giving this a five star review is because the service was pretty sub par. I’ve worked in many restaurants before so i understand that it can be really tiring and draining dealing with so many different people, but, customer service really is the name of the game. We ended up having two waitresses as the first one’s shift had ended while we were eating so a different waitress closed us out and both gals were very icy towards us. Neither of them smiled at us or even asked us how we were doing and when I asked for a recommendation, the first waitress just named the dish she recommended without providing any reason why. When we left, we said goodbye and thank you to the waitress who had closed us out and she looked us dead in the eye and did not say anything back to us. I was so thrown off by it. If the food and atmosphere was not as good as it was, I would not be returning. But because it was that good, I would definitely come back, but next time will not expect any sort of inviting service from waitresses unfortunately.

The service and sushi quality both are good. However, there are better sushi restaurants around portland that charge less and have a more relaxed atmosphere. Bamboo feels like a tourist trap.

Food is good, but implicitly asking for 20%+tip through the tipping machine is not in line with the place’s atmosphere.

Nice sushi experience. I am a sushi lover but this place offered new flavors and textures that I have never had. I tried the green machine as many people posted pictures so it seemed popular and I had to try. It was a bit sweet for me but still interesting and good. The big island was really good, very unique flavors. I have never had a sushi roll with chrunchy peppers. Spicy edamame was spicy! Good but spicy so if you are a bit wimpy don't get it. I will be back to try new rolls!

I love the bamboo sushi in Southeast. This one is so hit-or-miss. Particularly when it comes to drinks, kitchen food, and service. Sometimes great, sometimes really not good. We left our kitchen leftovers on the street for someone else to eat because they were so disappointing. We’re very hesitant to go now due to the inconsistency. Unfortunate this restaurant was acquired by a conglomerate and quality has taken a big dip.

In a city where options seem endless, I chose this restaurant twice during a visit. The sushi is outstanding, as are the drinks. In both cases, the ingredients were thoughtful, and the flavors balanced. If you aren't sure what to order, grab a seat at the bar and let the bartender lead you. You won't be disappointed.

My husband and I opted to splurge and ordered the ‘Omakase’ platter. Our server told us it was enough for up to 4, but everything was so tasty that we savored every colorful bite—just the two of us! I loved leaving our choices up to the chef and being pleasantly surprised with the variety of creatively beautiful rolls and assortment of fresh sashimi. We especially enjoyed the albacore. Cocktails were equally fun and our server was attentive and made great recommendations. Bamboo will be our go-to spot for sushi when in Portland!

We lucked into this place — we saw that it had “the best sushi in Portland” and my teenager scoffed and said, “I’ll believe when I taste it.”
He’s a believer.
We have to eat gluten-free so we ordered the usual GF appetizers — salad and edamame.
Then we realized that almost the entire menu, *including tempura!!* is gluten-free!
We ignored the salad and loaded up on shrimp tempura, sushi rolls with tempura, and sashimi.
All of it was excellent and we crawled out of there, fat and happy.
Highly recommend.

Best sushi out there. I would even go as far to say that it's life changing sushi. Sushi to which all other sushi will be compared to for the rest of my life. Up until Bamboo Sushi, I thought that the Michelin Star Miku was the best, and honestly, Bamboo outshines it in so many ways. The freshness, spice, creativity and quality are stunning.
I have celiac disease, and the care that was taken to inquire and label my food was assuring. They take food allergies seriously and I have complete trust that their procedures are top notch.
I may have to plan another trip to Portland just so I can experience it again. Thank you, Bamboo, for the experience and memory.

This is a decent restaurant but do not order delivery from them. Had a $100 order stolen because they dont ask delivery drivers to confirm the pickup at the time of pickup. So people can just walk out the door with YOUR FOOD and go home and eat it. NW location is a tighter ship I believe.

I got the sunset roll, the simple tuna nigiri at the top of the menu, and a salmon nigiri I can't recall. The tuna was superior in quality - it frankly surprised me how good it was. The sunset roll was a great indulgent American style roll with everything you're looking for in taste and texture. This was my first sushi meal after having some world class sushi at Sushu Tokyo 10 in Roppongi. Portland's Bamboo rose to the challenge and exceeded expectations. I'll be back.

Food was mediocre. Sushi wasn't the best I've had. The one thing we did like was the Friday the 13th roll. But all the other sushi rolls we got were either salty or had a weird after taste. The atmosphere was loud and I could barely hear the waitress speaking.

Delicious and friendly—an overall great experience. The spicy unicorn roll is excellent and the rice was perfectly prepared. Our waiter, Tyler, made a great sake recommendation and the kind hostess even gave my reservation back after I called to explain that I accidentally canceled it!

Experiences at bamboo differ every time and this one was a great experience. Service was awesome, food came at an okay time, all the food was delicious minus the steak which just seemed like a bad cut and not properly cooked but other than that our time there was overall great.

Fantastic sushi in a chic environment; had a perfect time. We were especially pleased with the green roll, as well as our server's knowledgeable suggestion about saké.

Been to bamboo half a dozen times and it never disappoints. All the sashimi and nigiri is always extremely fresh and delicious. Really enjoyed the small plate maitake, tofu agedashi, and black cod.

Fresh sushi with a great variety to choose from. We got there before 6pm and found out they had a happy hour menu with some discounted items. Highly recommended!

Food was great, but take an Uber. Downtown Portland isn't safe for your property, someone smashed one of the windows of my truck.

If you dig sustainability & awesome sushi, seek no further! The food was beyond delicious, clearly crafted with love and creativity, and the staff are rockstars of hospitality. And as a bonus, they open an hour earlier than the other sushi joints in the area, so stop in for amazing happy hour deals and treat yo self.

I visited Bamboo Sushi with a small group while attending a training conference in Portland. The staff was friendly, helpful and attentive. The sushi was fantastic! Everyone in our group was impressed, the prices were reasonable, the food was fresh, the presentation excellent - we had a great time. We visited on a Monday night and they were busy. Fortunately, we made an online reservation earlier in the day, so our wait was not too long. If you enjoy good sushi, I highly recommend Bamboo Sushi!

Bartender was knowledgeable and great to talk with. Everything was presented wonderfully and very tasty. Space feels cozy without feeling too cramped.

Overpriced and overrated, the sushi was incredibly salty to the point I couldn’t eat it anymore. Small rolls for 15-19$ that taste awful. You’re better off spending your money at a REAL sushi restaurant.

We decided to pop in for some tasty sushi and our server James was sweet and well mannered. He had excellent conversation skills and menu knowledge. Will definitely return again.

Went in with high expectations but sushi was mediocre at best.
What made the experience worse was the rushed service. The miso soup came after the sushi and we were asked multiple times if we want to order more food.
The bill was kept at the table even without asking so that was surprising

Came on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised it was happy hour. Naturally I tried a few dishes and a cocktail. My favorite thing was the miso soup and the shrimp tempura roll. Really everything I had was my favorite, except the crispy rice, it taste like it was pre-made and rubbery, but everything else was delicious. Service was amazing and cocktails were balanced. Highly recommend and I would return.

amazing food, waitstaff that can't prebus a table to save their life. waiter left every plate and menu on the table and would not take anything but direct comments, ignoring all hints.

Young but experienced personnel, very good nigiri sushi and sashimi. Had amberjack, yellowtail tuna, and amaebi. Also, had good quality warm house sake. And ooh, wonderful octopus appetizer!!!

I have never had sushi this good in my life! Everything was amazing! The servers were so kind and attentive. The Unicorn Roll is to die for. I could eat that everyday of my life. The shrimp and vegetable tempura was perfect. Best battered tempura I have ever had. Come by and enjoy. Happy hour is from 2-4pm on the weekends.

HOLY HELL PEOPLE, YOU HAVE TO EAT HERE WHEN IN PORTLAND!!!!!
Of all my travels I've eaten at many different sushi restaurants and I have to say that Bamboo Sushi is the best by far.
Our compliments to the chefs and staff; the flavor and service both exceeded our expectations.

I called this location regarding missing utensils and soy sauce with my order. I ordered two sushi rolls and my total bill was $40. I am very dissatisfied. Not only was it missing parts of my order, I phoned and the host was very smug about it and didn’t offer to take care of this issue. Considering this is a highly rated restaurant and prides itself with quality, I was disgusted that the host only offered to give me utensils and soy sauce to me next time. Yea right. That is very rude to say especially when a business like this should be training their employees to carry out better customer resolution and at least offer to make the situation better and compensate a free app with my next order. The female host at Bamboo sushi, you need to do better.

Great sushi, great service! Price was very reasonable and the quality was phenomenal. Almost everything is gluten free and we had no issues with cross contamination. The tempura was incredible.
I recommend the Fry Tide roll and the Tuna Poke starter.

Great option for gluten-free sushi. Their tempura batter is gluten-free, and delicious. Food and service were good, even though they were very busy. The space was loud and felt a bit crowded.

Loved my time there!!
Was able to speak to one of the chef's while enjoying the meal, she was very knowledgeable and helped me picking out the best items I'd enjoy the most.
Her service was fantastic and made the experience that much better.
Will definitely be back when I'm in Portland again!
Thank you Jessica!!

Arrived from out of town right when they opened for lunch at 12. Fish quality was excellent, tempura batter was very light and fried skillfully. Only issue was the slow service - our friend waited literally 60 minutes for her 5 pieces of nigiri to come out. We had finished our chirashi bowls and appetizers before her food came out. It sounded like there was only 1 sushi chef and prioritized takeout orders instead of just making 5 pieces of our nigiri first.

Two amazing meals at Bamboo Sushi while we vacationed in Portland. We had vegetable tempura, cauliflower, chicken, shrimp small plates and green machine, unicorn and five something (not sure on name) rolls, all delicious. Patrick our server on second visit was wonderful and Teddy the manager was great. He was kind enough to find seating on crowded nights as well as being friendly, knowledgeable and great at his job! No wonder this place is always crowded! They have it all; food, service and great warm atmosphere.
