We proudly offer fresh sushi sourced from Japan and a variety of delicious, authentic Japanese dishes. Our menu combines quality ingredients with affordable prices, providing a true taste of Japan that’s both satisfying and budget-friendly.
what an amazing find! I tried the chef’s special and the king salmon roll, and both were absolutely incredible. The fish was so fresh and flavorful – the chef even mentioned it’s shipped fresh from Japan! It literally melted in my mouth with every bite. I’ve lived in downtown for years, and I can’t believe this was my first time here – it’s such an underrated spot. The restaurant is small and cozy, with really cute decorations. I’ll definitely be back again soon!

First visit to this place, and it's absolutely a hidden gem! I didn't expect the food to taste this good. The fish is incredibly fresh, and the environment is lovely with charming decorations. The presentation of the dishes were impeccable, making it almost too beautiful to eat. The attention to detail extends beyond the food to the impeccable service.
The chef was also very passionate about the food, took the time to introduce us to the ingredients!

Great spot for a date night. The omakase was really worth it. Each sushi was made to order and delicious. The AYCE made this omakase over the top because if you’re still hungry, you can just place an additional orders of the items you like best. Definitely don’t skip out on the dessert!

A friend and her fiance took me out to Hamono Sushi last night, and it was wonderful. Admittedly, I am not a sushi expert, but there was not one thing served that was not delicious. The host/server was attentive and knowledgeable. I enjoyed my experience very much.

I had an incredible omakase experience here! The food was absolutely amazing—the fish was incredibly fresh, and every bite was perfectly crafted. The waiter was super friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, which made the experience even better. This place is a gem, and I can’t recommend it enough. We’ll definitely be coming back!

Amazed by the quality of the omakase! It features an appetizer (crab miso soup), 12 pieces of nigiri, and mid-course uni chawanmushi along with 3 6oz sake to pair with. After the courses are done, we were able to order AYCE nigiri and special dishes from the menu plus dessert at the end.
Crab miso soup: one crab meat in the soup. It was great to start off especially during winter to warm my pallet up.
12 pieces of nigiri: pretty solid pieces. They were not huge pieces but were surprisingly fresh and delicious. My favorites were kanpachi and uni. Uni was from hokkaido. I loved the butteriness of it!
Uni chawanmushi: omg!! I'd get this by itself it's on the menu. 4-5 pieces of uni, scallops and ikura in the steamed Japanese egg custard. So yummy and so rich with all the seafood.
AYCE nigiri: the service is tad slow for this one and nigiri pieces are smaller. But still yummy and it's unlimited so how can you complain? Also the chef decorates each pieces carefully with different toppings on top and each dish comes with huge pieces of blueberries and cherry tomatoes.
Daily special: you can order upto 3 pieces at a time. This is so worth the money. We got more kanpachi and scallops.
Special dishes: it ranges from yuzu salmon salad to karaage and udon. My favorite was the yuzu salmon salad. Uni toro tartar was a bit disappointing as I couldn't really taste the uni or toro. It's a small piece.
Yakitori is only served from 5pm. Since we came in around lunch, we weren't able to order from AYCE yakitori but nigiri pieces were enough for us to be happy and full.
1000% I will be back. I'm bringing my family next time.

Was not only the best sushi I’ve had but the best fish I’ve ever had. I just ordered Nigiri but everything was simple, clean, and full of flavor. Pricing was in line with quality which means if you hit an off day expectations may not align with your Bill. I was not there on an off day and the quality was exceptional and was a beautiful way to start Christmas vacation.

A charming sushi spot in downtown with fresh and flavorful offerings. While the rolls were all delicious and portions were generous, the order arrived in a somewhat disorganized sequence. Unfortunately, a mentioned mushroom allergy was overlooked, resulting in mushroom tempura being served. Despite this, the quality of the food stood out.

First time experiencing omakase and I love it! The food was exquisite that it just all melts into your mouth. Love the customer service. They introduce you to each type of the food and they are there when you need them. Not a lot of waiter/waitress does that anymore. They come to your table once and never come back until they give you your check. The atmosphere was was amazing. I love the decorations with the cherry blossoms. Makes it feel like if I was in Japan. The price is $95. It might be expensive for some people but you're paying for the best quality and you can't find most of these ingredients at other restaurants. Plus it's all you can eat so it's worth it. I definitely would come back here again.

Small sushi restaurant in downtown Portland serving delicious sushi. I had the first omakase special at $95 which included 12 pieces and sake flight. Delicious and perfect amount and variety of excellent nigiri. You can get extra pieces at no extra cost which was an amazing deal. Recommended.

I'm thrilled to give a shoutout to Jamie, the new owner of this amazing sushi spot! A few months ago, I had a minor error with the previous owner that unfortunately went unresolved. But today Jamie took care of it promptly and with enthusiasm, exhibiting true professionalism. And let's not forget the most important part - the food is absolutely delicious! In my opinion this is one of the top sushi spots in town, hands down.

The service or should I say failure to serve us at all was terrible. We walked in on a Thursday night and asked if we had reservations and stated no, we don't and we were told it would be five minutes. No problem, we wait for them to set up the table. Two tables were taken out of the five tables available (we were eventually the third table taken). Five minutes passes by and we are seated, it's going well until it's not. We then proceed to sit there for another ten minutes looking at the menu, no drinks were asked for and not even water was given at this point. The place was not busy all. Waitress (younger asian girl with blonde hair) starts talking to the people right next to us asking about their day, we haven't even been asked for drinks yet. She proceeds to stand in the hallway in the back for another five minutes talking to a coworker. Then proceeds to start setting up the table right next to us then just walks away. Keep in mind, no one is even there to use this table. Comes back around talks to a different family this time, not even dining questions. It's been about 25 minutes at this point since we walked through the door, with no questions for drinks or any even recognition that we are there to eat. At this point we just get up and leave; we've had enough. I don't know if it was because were Hispanic or what, but there was no help for us at all, not even a water. Sad and honestly feel disrespected. We got up and left and the waiter had the audacity to snarkly say, "Thanks for coming in" as we walked out. After seating us these were the only words spoken to us the whole time. I am so glad I never spent a single dollar at this place and I hope others read this review and do the same. There's plenty of other spots in the City to eat that were happy to serve us.

This place is really wonderful! the food is great and the service is wonderful. It's a very small place, with maybe 3 staff total. Just expect slow service, especially large groups but they are very kind and considerate.

I came here because someone told me they had some of the better quality sushi in the area and some imported from Japan. They were so right. The quality is amazing. It also therefore has a higher price tag so not a place I'd go regularly. I give it 5 stars because the service, food, and intimate but very casual atmosphere are just wonderful. Can't control prices and for the quality it is worth it. But for those looking for a bigger portion size for the price it may not be for you.

Started following them on instagram and wanted to try. I’m SO glad I did. Truly the most thoughtfully curated and fresh, tasty sushi I have had in the city. On par with well known places like nimblefish. Walking up feels like you’ve found a secret gem in the middle of downtown and then it opens to a cozy and beautiful space. Service is warm and prompt. I highly recommend coming here on a Thursday or Friday and getting uni. Truly the most thoughtfully sourced fish I have seen in Portland. This place should have a line out the door.

Hamono was recommended to us by a local as a can't-miss sushi spot, and the food and service bore that recommendation out. The interior design is also very cool, but it is on the smaller side, so you may have to wait or carry out during busier times.

This is such a cute spot and the service, as many reviewers have said, is so wonderful. I would still come back and try it again, however, I felt the prices were a bit high for the amount of food you got. Two pieces of Sea Bream nigiri (one of my favorites) was around $16 for example. I have no problem paying for high quality sushi but the sushi wasn’t very good and I got some pieces that were actually tough or inedible - which is super unlike these pieces that are typically tender and almost buttery. It made me so sad because the miso soup was amazing and the servers were so kind. Today may have just been an off-day - their Omakase definitely seems like a good deal - I wouldn’t write this off entirely but it wasn’t my favorite.

Cute tiny dining room and a helpful server. The sushi is pretty good but not my fav in the city. Seems like a good option for large trays for parties or groups. Edamame was alright and the veggie tempura was good but a little doughy
Only other note is that the music is explicit rap - fyi if you’re going with your mom or little kids

I do want to let anyone dining here know - you do have to ask for napkins. Chopsticks are in the black caddies, and the lucky cat is actually a soy sauce dispenser. I wasn't told any of this, so I hope this helps somebody. Also PLEASE double check your bills here. I was charged for an item I didn't receive, and double charged for another item.
The food was really good, but the dining experience was the strangest I've ever experienced in my life for more than just those mentioned.

Worst sushi I have had in a while. Kanpachi was $14 for 2piece and it smelled and tasted very bad. Priced like a high end sushi place but serves cheap smelly fish. Server takes order with an attitude and when I ordered Shima Aji, server did not bother to tell me they were out of Shima Aji until he came out with other food. Not worth the money, do not waste time here.

Hamono Sushi boasts an aesthetically pleasing interior, particularly its ceiling design, which adds to the ambiance of the dining experience. Although the space is somewhat compact, it creates an intimate and cozy atmosphere that complements the dining experience.
The culinary offerings are impressive, with the sushi standing out for its quality and flavor. It's worth noting that the prices are on the higher side, reflecting the quality of the sushi served. Our party of eight spent around $300 on our meal, which included a service charge of $60. By the end of our dining experience, we felt mostly satisfied, reaching about 75% satiety.
During our visit with a larger group, we were subject to a 20% service charge, which is a bit steep imo, although understandable given the group size. One area for improvement would be the attentiveness to customer service, as there were instances where requests, like repeated asks for cold water, we only got like 1-2 small jugs for 8 people (I think there was only 1 server so can't hold that against them). The food does take a while to come out too but again I think that goes along with it being a small shop.
I think it works better for a small group or if you are doing the group package then do take-out.
Overall, Hamono Sushi delivers a delightful dining experience with a few areas for refinement.

SUSHI PARTY
We gave Hamono a try for our family’s multi-birthday celebration to feed 14. I ordered a sushi tray and extra rolls to supplement for about $250 including tip. We did not get exactly what we ordered/paid for online, but were still very happy with the beautiful presentation and amount of sushi you get for the price.
The fish is the same stuff nearly all the sushi spots get from the delivery truck. Nothing special, but does the trick. They were flexible on pickup time to work around my schedule and helped carry it out to the car.
I supplemented the meal by buying frozen potstickers to cook at home, making my own sunomono salad, and also using miso soup packets in a big pot. We had mochi ice cream for dessert.
All in all, not a bad way to feed 14 hungry sushi lovers for under $300.

I don't know if they have good food or not, because we walked out 10 minutes after we got there. Our server (wordlessly) brought us a container of water, but no glasses. Didn't say hello, or I'll be back in a mute to take your drink orders--nothing. It wasn't busy, yet no one came by to ask us anything about ordering food or drinks, anything. A few people were being waited on--just not us.

Really underwhelming overpriced food. I ordered takeout tempura and crab roll an hour before they closed. The tempura tasted greasy fried in old oil and not edible. Skimped on the vegetables. I had to throw in the trash since it was inedible. The rolls also did not seem freshly made. No carefully presentation skills. Just looked like it was rushed and thrown in. Store bought sushi looks more appealing. This is my second time ordering and was disappointed the first time too. Thought I would give them another chance. Since they are small business close to where I live. When I picked up my order they just were chit chatting amongst themselves in an empty restaurant(hour before their closing). Did not have any smile or hospitality. Looked at me with a blank stare like what I was doing at their restaurant? I never write bad reviews. But had to write this immediately with the bad experience. I work in service industry and they just gave me bad vibes. I even added a 20% tip. Thinking they would make an effort making the meal. Just turnoff ruining my night/dinner

As a visitor from Chicago, this place had most reasonably priced high quality omakase flights I've ever seen. The fish quality was top-notch and really well prepared. I especially loved their madai nigiri. I was in sushi heaven.
I loved that the place didn't have a high-dining vibe, and despite being high quality, it felt like there were a lot of casual sushi eaters there. We definitely over-ordered, as it was our last night in Portland, but we went back to our hotel, way overfull but very happy.
The only feedback I would give is that the wagyu tataki and nigiri were a bit overcooked. I would recommend to avoid those until they improve that.
All the FISH was probably the best I've ever had. That should be the main takeaway from this review.

The server lacked of fish knowledge, when I asked her everything about fish, she needed to ask the chef. I know we were late but you guys can simply tell me you're no longer taking orders instead of telling me after my meal and telling me that the chef forgot to make my chef's special roll and you didn't order my sushi roll. I totally understand with you told me you don't have wagyu and salmon belly at first, but I couldn’t accept you guys completely forgot what I've been waiting for. After knowing I am not satisfied with the meal, told me they won’t charge me for the things that they forgot…..What the?? You want to charge me at first for the things I didn’t get or what do you mean by saying that??? This is your solution for upset customer????………
For your reply: Thanks for still served me, but do you understand that I ordered two “sushi roll” at the beginning of my order, it was my first order, not second round or third, but how come you forgot my first order and served me the second round and the third round? I totally understand you closed at 9pm, but my two sushi roll order was before 9pm. “Unfortunately Our kitchen is closed after completing your order, so cannot order you sushi roll.” First of all, you didn’t complete my order; Second of all, my sushi roll was ordered at my first order, so you forgot to make my roll, not that you said you “cannot order you sushi roll.” And when I asked for my order at the end of the meal, the server said chef forgot to make it(one of the sushi roll), and she didn’t order(one of the sushi roll) for us.

Wonderful dining experience. I stopped in for lunch before I went to work not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. The flavor and quality of the fish far surpassed my expectations. Highly recommend scallop and salmon nigiri. My server Michelle was also incredibly kind, welcoming and attentive. She gave excellent recommendations and made my experience superb.

Let me first start off by saying Michele our server was awesome and deserves 5 stars. The disappointing part of our dinner was due to the fact they ran out of certain ingredients for our orders. We ordered 4 blue crab handrolls and they had no blue crab. Another one of our rolls Nobu Roll also included blue crab and they substituted with imitation crab no mention of the replacement or no discount on the price. We ordered another roll which was supposed to have snow crab again got imitation crab again no mention of the change of ingredients.
It was a cute little restaurant but unfortunately the sushi couldn't have tasted much better if served as described on the menu. Decor on ceiling was so pretty.

My friend and I dined here yesterday and we had a terrible experience. We debated whether or not to leave a bad review because we really hate to do this especially to a small business but after reading several one star reviews, we felt that we had to corroborate their feedback as it was similar to what we experienced.
First off, charging your customers a 3-3.5% credit card processing fee is not only shameless it is indicative of a bad business strategy. If you’re going to charge your customers the merchant services fee that you deduct from your taxes you should: A) disclose it when they place their order or B) simply increase your prices to absorb that fee.
We ordered several things starting with an appetizer plate with Edamame and Gyoza. The Gyoza barely had any filling in it and was terribly salty. The Edamame was mostly uncooked.
The shrimp in our sushi roll tasted like it had been sitting next to a banana (I know that sounds strange) and it did not taste fresh.
My Catsu Chicken curry was extremely bland, the chicken tasted old and had a rubbery texture. The miso soup was also very bland, probably one of the worst soups I’ve ever had.
My friend ordered ramen, some kind of spicy pork with a soft boiled egg. The egg was cold and they gagged a little on it when they ate it. They were also very confused because the utensil they received to eat it with was not the normal miso spoon with chop sticks but a bowl with a large wooden ladle instead. A large ladle which was impossible to eat the noodles with. And nothing else. I had to ask for a fork and they borrowed it because the waitress didn’t bring us another. When we asked about more silverware, she pointed to a large serving spoon that she had brought earlier.
They also ordered tea. After a sip they said it tasted funny. After another sip they set it aside and did not touch it again. When I asked why later, they said it tasted metallic.
They also told me, immediately upon entering the restaurant, they smelled something foul but stayed because they thought it came from outside. It did not.
Dishes came out at random times with no silverware but a single fork, the waitress was pleasant but seemed very confused, the soy sauce dispenser was empty and dirty, our waitress was surprised we needed another. The meal cost over $70 with tip and we left feeling like it was a meal that we should not have been expected to pay for. We really wanted to enjoy this adorable space with the cherry blossom decor but sadly this is our first and last time.
Please take pride in the ingredients and the food that you’re serving to your customers, saving a few bux is not worth your reputation.

Easy to find sushi spot with a convenient location. Not alot of seats so make sure you get a reservation. I ordered the sashimi platter which came with 15 pieces of 6 assorted fish. I jot a pretty good quantity of fish, unfortunately the quality wasnt what i expected. The selection is determined by the chef, so it may change depending on what is fresh. With the exception of what was either medium fatty or fatty tuna (waiter never told me what was what), the pieces did not meet expectations. Overall the sashimi was fine, if I had paid 40% less I would have felt like I got what I paid for and been happy, so at the price i paid it was sad sushi. For Bamboo prices I expect Bamboo quality sushi and this wasn't even close.

Credit card charge 3-3.5% is unreasonable and should be addressed at reservation or before ordering , not when you are ready to pay. Four people with over $60 per person is a bit over priced given the quality of the food. Overall experience is not good for our first time and probably the last time for this restaurant.

Maybe it’s a one off, but had a very bad experience last night. My friend’s salmon roll had bones in it. My roll slid off the plate as the waiter was putting the plate down and left a piece sauce side down on the table. All he said was “careful, it slides on the plate”.

A little pricey but so worth it. The freshest fish prepared perfectly. Excellent service.

My husband and I, visiting Portland for a few days, sought sushi near the art museum and found Hamono. We had a sashimi appetizer special with fish we’d never had - really first class, fresh and flavorful. We also had two rolls - both unique and fresh, including the best V roll we ever had.

I don’t write reviews but if you are in Portland I would highly recommend Hamono. We are from Hawaii and know fresh fish and sushi. A small owner chef sushi bar with exceptional sushi and reasonable prices on sushi and sake

Food was amazing! Small cozy location very well put together. Only gave it 3 stars due to a poorly written sign that mislead me to ordering an uni sampler I thought would be $25 ( which was fantastic) but the price was double after I got the check. Overall I'd go again.

Terrible menu selection, specifically miso soup was tasting like a soap. Not authentic Japanese food experience at all. Don’t recommend this place. We went there with 5 members of family to celebrate something, this place totally ruined our moment.

Food is fresh and tasty. Portions are small. Service is not good. Waitress disappears to the back to talk with coworkers. They add a 3.5% charge "to cover credit card fees" but don't tell you.

great sushi and katsu in a cozy and well decorated space.
10/10 would clumsily eat with chopsticks.

Our experience at this restaurant was easily one of our worst in Portland. At these prices, I have really high expectations and what we received was a joke. Beneath a joke, actually. Our server was pleasant enough, but clearly inexperienced and unfamiliar with the menu and/or the restaurant.
We placed our order and waited. And then waited some more. Between the time we placed our order, but before our food arrived, another diner had been seated beside us, placed his order, eaten his meal, paid his bill and left. We told the server that we had been waiting for 45 minutes, and her initial response was to say, "No, you haven't." When we noted the exact times involved, she walked away without a word. She came back a moment later and said that the chef got distracted, but she reminded him about our order. Seriously. Or rather - Seriously?
I ordered the lobster roll which came about 10 minutes later. I bit into it and found a piece of lobster shell rolled up in the sushi. This was not a tiny fleck; it was about the size of a dime. Same thing in the next piece. When I asked the server if the sushi was supposed to have lobster shell in it, she said, "Yes, it is." Seriously? She came back a few minutes later and said that she thought I was talking about the lobster shell garnish [after I had pointed out the two dime-sized pieces of shell on my plate], and no, the sushi wasn't supposed to have pieces of shell in it, but the chef was going to give my 50% off. When asked if she meant the whole meal, she said no, just the one roll.
People, you can't make this up! Take your money and dine somewhere that takes the restaurant business and its customers seriously.

I love this little spot. Stopped by for lunch on a Friday when I was just passing through Portland. The fish quality here is really good. Exactly what I was looking for. Got the chirashi bowl and my partner got two special rolls. The server was also delightful. Price was good considering level of quality. Had a great experience and definitely coming back the next chance I get.

The rice was stiff and seemed old. I ordered 4 rolls and only got one small container of ginger. Not really impressed.

Horrible service. Decent food. When we walked in, it was not very busy. Julie did not greet us in any sort of warm manor. She struggled to provide the most basic service. I literally will never go back. Too bad because the food was actually decent.

BEAUTIFUL space. Really awesome vibe. The chicken katsu was by far the best I have had in Portland. (Comparable to what I experienced in South Korea when I lived there). The service was exceptional.

Fantastic! The omakase nigiri I ordered was some of the best I've ever had. Loved that they used real wasabi.

We really enjoyed coming to Hamono to enjoy some delicious, fresh sushi and great service. It's an intimate space with a colorful decor that creates feelings of wanting to stroll through a cherry-blossomed garden.
Our only suggestion would be to air out the restaurant. Upon entering, the restaurant had very strong odors that took away from the ambience/atmosphere. A good deep cleaning and improved ventilation will do this place wonders.
Overall, we recommend visiting... even to simply order takeaway as the food is really delicious!

Went at 1130 on a Monday with a friend and we were the first ones there. But we did see the tables get filled up pretty fast shortly after us.
We ordered the omakase nigiri, the scallop nigiri and the a5 wagyu nigiri. We are from the bay area in California and I have had omakase in San Francisco, New York, San Jose, and Seattle. So standards for sushi is pretty high.
It is not a bar experience omakase so do not expect that. It's more of a nigiri plate and I wish they had assorted toppings on each fish.
However it was reasonably priced and each bite had so much quality and taste. The fish melts in your mouth.
There was only one person working the floor and she was very friendly and was quick to take out order. We did have to remind her on some things like getting ginger, refilling our tea, asking for more ginger. But she was attending to some tables that came at once and handled it pretty well. Because she became busy I think she didn't have time to name all the fish on our omakase nigiri plate, as she just dropped it off but it was fine as we are familiar with the different fish. But still a friendly and warm service!
So all in all it was an okay experience. I was between 3 and 4 stars but I really enjoyed the quality and the taste. They just opened in October of last year so I am sure it's still a soft opening for them but everything was still really good. So I left it at 4 stars. I would come back again.
Parking is very limited (but we got lucky) and there are only a few tables so recommend to either make reservations online or come early. I don't know how busy this place gets over the weekend.

Small, hole in the wall sushi spot with quality fish. Better than your neighborhood conveyor belt sushi spot, so note the higher prices, but it's totally worth it. For the people afraid of raw fish they have some cooked and fried rolls, as well as ramen and chicken katsu. The waitress on duty when I was there was very accommodating and kind even though she was very busy. Will stop by again.

Cherry blossoms overhead and vaporwave ambience contributed to a delicious sushi experience! Food was fresh, well prepared and well plated.
Service was excellent. Mushroom saki was earthy and flavorful :)
When in Portland, we will return !

Sushi was great. I have Fuji roll. But ramen is a little disappointed... In general, it is still good restaurant.

I will be honest and say I did not try any of the sushi. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was clean and well decorated. I ordered the gyudon, which is one of my favorite dishes, so I was excited to try it. I even passed on a free lunch so I could come here for the gyudon.
Unfortunately it was not a traditional Japanese gyudon. The meat was not shaved, more like thinly chopped. Also the sauce tasted like it belonged in a different Asian dish. If this was called beef and onion rice bowl it would be accurate.
For all of this I wanted to give four stars. The dish wasn’t bad, just not what I expected. And everyone was nice.
The reason for the three stars was that I was charged a 3.5% of my bill for using a credit card. I would have appreciated being told this upfront instead of finding it in my bill after the fact. It feels like a dark pattern and it doesn’t make me feel good about my experience. Regards I didn’t complain and I still tipped well.
My only advice would be to have your staff explain to patrons about the charge when they go to collect the card.
