Ramen, skewers & other Japanese pub fare, plus sake, in restaurant with a variety of seating styles.
It’s not really an izakaya . I was disappointed. The chicken karaage and gyoza were oily not at all like ones I’ve had in LA, Osaka and Tokyo. Also the takoyaki was so disappointing - barely any octopus , without the golden crisp and way too much sauce. The balls seemed doughy too. Again not what I was expecting. The ambiance is kinda cool but it has that Portland unfinished look. I think if it focused on only small plates and Japanese beers it could be better - if the quality of the food increases. This is a chain (from Japan) not sure if anything good made it over. To be fair I didn’t try any of the noodle dishes.

Had an extra night in Portland to explore after a fun weekend celebrating a great friend’s wedding! A friend of my girlfriend and I sent us this restaurant and we were super impressed with our visit. The restaurant has traditional Japanese style tables where you remove your shoes before sitting, and also has standard booth/tables if you would rather.
Our waiter suggested the Kumamoto Ramen so I gave it a shot and this broth was one of the best tasting broths I have had with ramen ever. The red ginger and green onions gave the broth a unique but not over powering flavor. The Shoyu Ramen was phenomenal and we added some fried garlic to the broth. The Tuna Krab Salmon roll was loaded with fresh seafood and topped with a delicious house-made unagi sauce. Everything from service, to food to ambience was amazing here!

Love this place. My favorite restaurant. I don’t come in often but when I want a nice ramen and sushi dinner this is the place. They have a few private shoji screened tables which I always ask for when they’re available. The food is always incredible and comes out faster than I anticipate. The drinks are great, especially the Japanese Pilsner. 10/10

It's ok. The food is honestly not the best, it was alright. Nice sake flight though. Although the interior isn't really too inspiring. One area looks very authentic and interesting, with bamboo flooring and hanging lanterns, but the next side just looks like a typical cafeteria - one that isn't super well-kept. I don't think I'd go back.

Stellar! I'm not an easy five and this was a great experience. Originally went for sushi and before a show and the server asked if we were going to a show at the Snitz, and let us know that they only had one sushi chef. Kindly recommended we order alternate because good sushi takes time.
We ordered ramen and katsu curry. Really excellent food and attentive service. Even when they got busy soon after we ordered.

We came in from a cold day and it was a very cozy setting. The food was delicious and hot, the tea was nice. We got to sit next to the window in a traditional Japanese booth which was a fun plus. The bathrooms were also nice.

FISH ARE NOT FRESH!! We went here on Thanksgiving. There weren't a lot of people, yet they sat us in a corner right next to the storage shed with some broken doors leaning on the booth. Instant annoyance.
The price is rather disproportionate with the portion. $17 for 5 thinly sliced pieces of salmon sashimi. Did not taste any special or even fresh. Their Kamatama Ramen is good but a little over salted.
Later that night both of us had extreme stomachache and diarrhea. We knew it was because of this place because we had nothing else that night. My first time ever having food poisoning issue with a sushi place. I don't understand their high reviews, their fish are definitely not fresh!!

I got the Kumamoto Ramen: house-made noodles in a pork and chicken broth with chashu pork. It was delicious, but the portion size was much smaller than what I’m used to at other ramen restaurants and the price is much more expensive. The amount of chashu pork was also much smaller. Ironically, the spoon was 3x bigger than I’m used to at ramen restaurants.
I got a Spicy Salmon Roll. For the price of $13, I was expecting it to be 8 pieces, but it was only 6 pieces. The sushi itself was average.
There is better ramen and sushi at cheaper prices elsewhere.

Absolutely the worst dining experience I've ever had. One of our party of 3 was served within 20 minutes, but the remaining 2 in our party were served after an hour. Asked for our dishes to go at that point, and for a comp and to speak to a manager. The staff argued with us about their terrible service, would not make any concessions to right their wrong, and also informed us that there was no manager on duty to speak to on a Friday night. Not to mention their portion sizes are that of an appetizer. DO NOT WASTE YOU MONEY HERE.

I have enjoyed this place many times over the years and will be back because the food is amazing! Unfortunately, as with many other places in Portland right now, they seem to be suffering from staffing problems. I came in alone for miso and a hand roll before a show... I waited for about 40 minutes and I had to leave because I didn't have time to wait for the food. Many other parties also left while we were waiting. The host did tell us that they were short-staffed but I was still surprised that they were not able to seat single diners at the sushi bar when people had left the sushi bar (there were two people at a bar that could seat at least 8...) As someone who works both front and back of house in the service industry, I saw many things that I would have been doing differently under such staffing shortages.

The place is gorgeous and the food tastes lovely, or at least the chicken curry I got did. The price is a touch higher compared to other Japanese places and I would prefer not to have servers verbally check on me 3-4 times when I'm trying to enjoy a meal.

Our server was rude and mostly absent. They forgot our food and asked us what we ordered approx 30 min later, rushed to put it together and it was not delicious or close to the experience we were looking forward to
People make mistakes, but no one apologized or tried to make it right. I hope someone at the restaurant reads this and coaches their employees on customer service

Just moved to Portland and was excited for sushi but this was not the place to get it. I’m sorry but I’ve had better sushi in Austin, TX. Not enough flavor and really expensive. Great service and the booth end of the restaurant looked cool but we were on the table side which was fine but not overflowing with ambiance. Boyfriend had the ramen which he also thought was good but not great. $81 for 2 people (including tip). Sorry but no.

I frequent Portland for business and generally stay for several nights in downtown.
I am a big Asian cuisine fan and try different restaurants while in town. This was the first time ordering food togo.
I generally come in, look at the menu, have sake while I am waiting for my order.
Now, I always order the best cold sake, sashimi and some rolls, never being cheap about my selection as well as tipping 20% even for a to go orders as the chief, waiters should be paid for their services.
When leaving the restaurant, I asked a caucasian bald waiter if I could have some extra ginger, I forgot to ask while I was waiting.
This waiter, was not friendly and said, "it would be a dollar extra!" I was honestly shocked, I said, "never mind."
My bill was around $119.00 plus 20% tip.
Wouldn't you think it wasn't too much to ask for some extra ginger and without the attitude.
I generally do not waist my time writing a review but on this occasion, it really bothered me.
The waiter that took my order, a young Asian fellow, super nice and helpful. The caucasian guy, not so much. I noticed him to be super serious, not so friendly, observing. Well, he proved to be exactly that.
There is a lot of competition in downtown PDX with really good Sushi, Japanese restaurants that I believe it is essential that you treat the customers decently. I was not asking for much and spent some money for one person, with that being said, he is the reason I will not be returning to your restaurant.
PDX has some terrific people, super nice for a metropolitan area, so I was shocked by his demeanor.
Sadly disappointed.

There are two types of traditional Japanese seating including private rooms, as well as booths and tables. The Ichiro ramen was maybe the best I've ever had, and the miso was also very good. The spicy tuna hand roll, salmon sashimi, and mackerel were also well done.

California roll tasted fresh; gyoza was piping hot but tasted like it had been in a fridge for a while. Might've been the oil because my companion had a similar complaint about the tiger roll's shrimp. They did enjoy the salmon roe topper on the side. Do get dessert; the tempura banana was light, crispy, full of good flavor, and just sweet enough to satisfy a craving.

The reason why I only give 2 stars is that we have had some pretty bad experiences with the customer service. We reserved a table for a very large group a month in advance and thought that everything was fine, since we were not told otherwise.
However, we called a few days before our visit again to extend the reservation for some additional guests, we were told send them a list of what we want to eat, which we thought was unusual but okay, so we gave them a list of what our 20 + people wanted to eat within 24h I am not going into detail how hard it is to reach everyone within 24h but okay…
The next day the we called again and gave them the preorders from their menus and suddenly we were asked to pay for all of it in advance, because thats their policy for larger groups of people, they said.funny that no one asked us for any of that the 4 weeks earlier when we made that reservation, nor did they tell us anything about that the other times we have called them since then.
At this point it was to late the cancel the reservation for this large group, because we were told that 2 days before the event.
The manager blamed all on the new staff that doesn’t know about that „policy“ however with no word you can read anything about that on their homepage.
What would have happened if we didnt add any extra guests and just showed up there with our reservation? In my eyes this was just poor planning on their side and they tried to blame it on everyone else but the ones who are actually responsible.
Its sad, because their food was pretty delicious and the service was fast, however all of the stress and hard time before will result in a one time only visit.

What an experience! We did a spontaneous trip to Portland and found this gem randomly on our walk through downtown. What a wonderful place to stumble upon! We chose to sit in a semi traditional Japanese booth. Our first real Ramen experience and boy did it not disappoint! We ordered two Sushi Rolls, the Spicy Roll (with Spicy Tuna) & the Tuna Krab Salmon Roll. Both were equally delicious! The Ramen we chose was the Kumamoto Ramen with substituted Smoked Cashew Chicken. There was so much depth in flavor packed in this dish! HIGHLY recommend. Our server was so nice and very prompt even during the dinner rush! We will be back! Thanks again, for spoiling us and giving us an unforgettable experience!

We love this place because they have excellent ramen and fun Japanese style seating areas, but the service is always so slow.
We've been here at least a dozen times over the past two years for either early dinner (4:30 or 5p), or regular time dinner (6 or 7p), and every single time the wait staff service is ridiculously slow at all the interactions: coming to our table to greet us, bringing water, coming to take our order, checking on us during the meal (never), clearing plates, bringing the bill.
We would probably spend a lot more money here if the wait person would check on us during our meal or even ask if we wanted dessert.
If you have lots of time, I highly recommend this place for their ramen.

Food was pretty good, everything else was terrible. You could tell the place was understaffed, but it took so long for the food to come, one of the items we ordered never came, and to top it off, they refused to take the gift card we had because it was "obsolete" (which I'm not sure is legal?). Will not be coming here again.

The WORST experience in the past couple of years.
Food: the curry has strong sour flavor which I don’t know if it’s normal. It doesn’t taste good for sure. If you expect Japanese curry to have strong sour flavor, then you are at the right place.
Service: we ordered 3 dishes. After serving only 1 dish, they asked me to pay the bill. Until I told them I was still waiting for the two remaining ones, they thought all were served. Finally the last two were ready, they handed them to another table. No table service at all as we had to separate the stacked plates and pour water ourselves.
Atmosphere: the whole restaurant has a strong bad smell of a super old house. The table smells bad and feels sticky.
Overall, EXTREMELY bad experience.

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Portland, but when I ordered my food yesterday, I was shocked by the quality and prices. I got tempura udon and one sushi roll and it came out to be almost $50. The noodles in the udon were not traditional udon noodles, and I did not enjoy their shape or texture as much as I enjoy the normal udon noodles. This restaraunt used to be amazing, and now I don’t think I would come back.

Very nice and authentic Japanese restaurant. Likely the best soyu ramen I have ever had. Not too salty and the soup is very flavourful. Not like some Ramen place you can taste the soy sauce from the soyu Ramen soup base. This one seems like have rich meat soup as the base. Noodle is very good as well. Their Sushi is not impressive but just ok. The Pork Don is the best of all. Highly recommend to try the pork don.

Love Shigezo and have for many years but the old charm of Japanese level of service has died. Now it's more "be ignored" and wait an unreasonable amount of time for your food. It's too bad and I'm sure the staffing problem is a thing but the result is disappointing.

This used to be one of our favorite downtown spots, but it has clearly gone downhill from previous years. Food quality and portions have slipped, and service was abysmal. We were never given water after multiple requests, nor did chopsticks come with our food. We finally had to hunt down glasses, water, and chopsticks by ourselves. The chirashi sushi bowl, which used to be fresh and delicious and carefully prepared, looked sloppy, unevenly sliced, and notably smaller (though the price was the same.) The gyoza was markedly worse (looked and tasted store-bought) and the bland ramen also
failed to live up to previous experiences. It felt like there was no love for food or for customers anymore. Such a shame.

I had high hopes for this seemingly authentic Japanese ramen restaurant, given the neighborhood's reputation for great Japanese cuisine. I arrived right when they opened at noon, and the cozy atmosphere with traditional futon tables set the stage for a promising meal.
I ordered the Okinawa style noodle, vegie vegie udon tanmen, and a special ramen, but sadly, my ramen experience was a letdown. The ramen had little resemblance to authentic Japanese ramen, and the soups lacked depth and flavor. Even the type of noodles used didn't match the dish descriptions.
To make matters worse, when we ordered udon, the waiter seemed confused and insisted that the ramen was udon, which was clearly a misunderstanding. The chashu pork, or should I say meat blocks, were haphazardly sliced, and the vegetable choices were also incorrect. It felt like nothing was done right for any of the three ramen dishes.
I had originally planned to order something else, but after trying the ramen, I abandoned that idea. I did not even take any photos! My disappointment was compounded by the suspicion that the restaurant's high ratings might be due to a lack of authentic Asian cuisine options in the neighborhood, rather than the quality of the food. The Asian decorations couldn't make up for the poorly executed Americanized flavors.
As an asian expecting to have some authentic asian food, I regret choosing this place for my meal. :(

We had the Okinawa style noodle and Mentaiko tama-kama Udon. Great flavors in both. The Okinawa dish had big chunks of pork. The Mentaiko had poached eggs, Tarako caviar that had good flavor, the onion oil is a nice touch to the light broth. I didn't think it was spicy. We also like that they offer sushi and rice dishes. Something for everyone.

Abu Ramen used to b stellar. Was bland...with beef?? That was bland. Had to dump soy sauce in it for flavor. Firecracker Roll was the best sushi roll in ANY sushi place. Not on menu anymore. Roll I ordered had sparse amounts of fish and was tiny....for 17 bucks!!!! Waiter seemed like he would rather be elsewhere. Atmosphere was sad. And sadly, I will never go back.

Came here with my girlfriend for a date night and left very disappointed in the portion size, bland food, and lack of service.
After being seated and placing orders, 3 different servers came by to update that menu items were out of stock and we needed to order something else.
Once orders were in, one plate was brought out fairly quickly, but it was another 20 minutes before the second plate and appetizer were brought out. The food portions were very small, and it food itself was disappointingly bland and lacking any flavor. It took over an hour for the server to come back and check on us or bring water refills which are empty before the food had arrived.
The atmosphere here is fantastic - but that is all this place has to offer. Bland food, small portions, inflated prices, and terrible service made this a poor experience I wouldn't recommend. There's a lot of great restaurants to visit in downtown Portland, this isn't one of them.

We tried the pokes from this place with high hopes that they would be good since the price was high and the ratings of this place were pretty high as well. Instead of a high-end pokes we were expecting, there were barely any salmon (about 10 little cubes of them), spicy mayo that was too salty, very few vegetables, and rice. I could have easily made a better poke bowl at home with more ingredients. It was very disappointing.
Services weren't terrible, but not friendly either.

We haven't been here in a while. It's certainly pricey, which I get given the location and atmosphere.
The food was just mediocre and small portions though. The ramen was in a small bowl, with 2 tiny slices of pork and hardly any bamboo. The egg in the ramen had shell on it. There is much better ramen in Portland, for less money.
The sushi was just fine. Basic California roll and a poorly rolled hand roll.
The servers were very friendly and attentive. The bright spot, outside of the atmosphere.
Draft Kirin in a chilled glass is a nice touch though.

My udon exceeded expectations with the yummy broth, excellent veg, and fresh noodles. The poke bowl was also better then expected with the flavorful sauce and nice fish. We tried a sake flight which was a fun opportunity to try some things we would never have splurged on otherwise. Overall, we are excited to go back to try some sushi and other donburi options.

Birthday dinner for my family did not went as exciting as we hoped. After 45 mins of wait, we asked stuff about our food and was told it’s about to come…and we’ve finally got out bowl of steamed rice. Total of 55 mins later only ramens arrived, leaving birthday girl without her food for even longer. Hour later pretty decent sushi roll arrived. At that point we were kind of exhausted Because of our hunger. Had to ask for every item of serving like soy sauce, napkins, to remove dirty plates. Had to be 1 star but for that one waiter, who wasn’t even ours but kept checking on us I’ll give it 3. But such a bummer for such a special night. No, food was not terrible. Decent. Not amazing, but no complains either. But that service. Ugggh!

I would negative ratings if it’s possible! Extremely ignorant staff, they are too busy to serve, super long waiting time, and unsatisfactory food quality. And the food portion is like kids meal, DEFINITELY WONT GO AGAIN and NOT RECOMMEND

Love the food here. It takes a long time and the service isn’t great but the food is worth it.

Good food and drink, service could be better. When we first arrived, the host in front said there'd be a 30 minute wait for a table, even though we had called 10 minutes prior and there was no wait at all then. Disappointed, we turned around and left as I was worried we wouldn't make it to a show in time. After leaving I realized there were several empty and clean tables, and I know they don't take reservations, so we turned around and went back in. This time we were greeted by a different server who could seat us immediately, no problem. They might have been understaffed which I understand, but this was just confusing because three different hosts told us three different answers for seating us. Regardless in the end we had a delicious, prompt meal which was only slightly overpriced. The sake was the best part of the meal for sure.

Two experiences here in the past two weeks have been terrible. Fish and food in general were poor quality, staff were rude and/or disinterested. I have dined here several times in the past 6 years and previously been average, nothing special (except the booths are fun) but something has changed for the worse. Don’t waste your time or your money here when Portland has many excellent Japanese restaurants to enjoy.

Really like coming to this place, one of my favorite ramen spots in oregon. The small plates like vegetable gyoza are always really good, and the ramen is always hot and fresh. I’ve never had a bad experience at this restaurant, it’s all been positive the 4 years I’ve been coming here. I highly recommend getting one of the Sake carafe’s for the table.

I've been here about 5 times now and each time has been amazing. The quality of the fish is unmatched especially for the price. Their sashimi is fresh and delicious. The bill for 2 people going all out is usually just over 100 - 120 and for high quality sushi that's pretty worth it. Just keep in mind to check the times they are open, I have definitely arrived to a closed restaurant before and it was my own fault. Also a lot of the seating has you sit cross cross or you can extend your legs if you just have 2 people intead of 4. Favorite sushi restaurant in Portland!

Went to this place for dinner on a weekday. It was not crowded maybe that’s why we got good service. Ordered miso soup which was good, spider and California rolls were good. What I did not like was the Chicken Karaage. It was too salty and the chicken war either bad or raw (it was mushy and we could not eat it after seeing that ) Overall a decent place! The best part was the izakaya style seating and Japanese style vibe!

They don’t have enough staff, they don’t take reservations, and they only seat 25 people at a time. I used to love this place, but it’s gone downhill and I would suggest going elsewhere at this time. If they planned ahead and took reservations it might make the experience more enjoyable, but waiting with no approximate wait time and no host is quite annoying.

One of the best ramen spots in Portland my go to when I invite friends out to town.

The ramen options are on point. And they have soba noodles! That are gluten free and delicious. There is also a full sushi bar at this location --and the sushi is solid. They tend to stick to the classics a bit but they have some cool new stuff pretty consistently. The vibe/interior seating arrangement is good too: Tables where are you sit on the floor, private booths with Shoji screens and regular tables and chairs. The service is on point too --they're fast, and they don't say no, they go the extra mile if you want something special. So if you haven't been there I recommend you check it out. It's definitely a go-to where no one will be disappointed.

Largely ignored on our last visit. No service for over an hour.

Japanese isakaya that has a Japanese pub decor. You cannot reserve in advance so you put your name on a waiting list. However, they seat you on another section where you can start with drinks. We tried the tasgy takoyakis and karaage, followed by kumamoto and shiro ramen, as well as a more dry-based ramen. Everything was delicious and service was great!

NOT authentic Japanese food just really poor versions of classics you usually find in a ‘real’ Izakaya (for example : gyozas we’re served steamed and bathing in a bowl of soya sauce (???) ; sushis were obviously not prepared by a sushi chef, the rice was hard and dry ; ramen are like instant ramen…) This is one of those places trying to take advantage of the recent popularity of Izakayas and charging the big bucks for it while taking short cuts with the dishes. Avoid this place.

The food was served very slowly, and it was a little bit too salty...

Their food is pretty solid. But their hours are terrible; I almost never actually eat there because most of the times Ive gone they are closed. and every time I’ve tried to place a take out they’ve either refused the order or said 2 hour wait. I know there is a labor shortage nationally, and maybe that’s the problem. But either way I’ve kinda given up.
