Awaji Izakaya is a moodily lit, cozy neighborhood Japanese izakaya with drink-friendly fare in northwest OKC. We serve the freshest and top quality sushi/sashimi in OKC, delicious yakitori, craft cocktails, and ice-cold Japanese beers and sakes.
Make sure you get reservations in advance because they fill up fast. The ambiance and decor is really nice here. I’ve been here a couple of times and sat at the bar each time. Service is always good. The fish is very fresh. The flavors are good. Only minor issue is that the rice on the rolls feels firmer than rice at other places.

WOW! Delicious. Everything was delicious! Chef/owner greeted us and came back to our table to make sure we were enjoying his food and everything was great. Mia was a fabulous waitress. We never wanted for anything. We will be going back often to try more items. Highly recommend everything we tried tonight.
Pork Goyza, salmon crudo, Tonkatsu w/egg fried rice, Gold digger sushi roll, and bread pudding dessert. Even the drink was great. Definitely go try this place. Prices are very comparable but the quality and love of the food is above most. We went for an Anniversary Dinner so over indulged in quantity of items but we were not disappointed in anything

Went here with my wife on my birthday, had an awesome time. I got an Awaji Punch to drink, a good strong choice. We had Enoki Mushroom and Beef Tenderloin skewers with Takoyaki to start, it was all delicious. I got the Kimchi Udon with shrimp and a fried eel roll, my wife had the filet mignon and it was perfectly cooked medium rare. The atmosphere made the night all the more pleasant, and the lighting was just right for drinks and chatting. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, the manager was very kind and was able to tell us a lot about the food. We got a blueberry cheesecake to go, which was really tasty. We will absolutely be going back!

Awaji Izakaya is the best new Japanese restaurant in OKC. Every visit is a new surprise, with weekly specials and a top notch menu. I feel like they've plucked me directly into a Tokyo sushi bar. Highly recommend. And if they ever bring back the "Honeymoon Roll" which is essentially a stuffed jalapeno popper in the form of a sushi roll, you must try it.

Excellent experience! Host will ask for preferred seating, the medium sized restaurant has a bar, sushi bar and table seats available. Alcoholic drinks are deceptively strong, the Awaji punch was very good. Sushi is incredibly fresh and service was absolutely wonderful. Spicy buttered edamame is not very spicy but very flavorful, loads of garlic. Oshinko was pricey but very delicious. Great conversation with wait staff and check up from head chef and management. All around an excellent experience.

Awaji is an absolute gem of a Japanese restaurant! I only wish I had taken photos and videos of the incredible food and entertainment we experienced tonight.
First, the service was outstanding. Our waitress, Maya, was hands down the best server I’ve had in a long time. She took exceptional care of my son and me, ensuring our dining experience was nothing short of perfect. If you’re planning to visit, do yourself a favor and ask for Maya—you won’t regret it!
Now, let’s talk about the food. Wow… just WOW! The sushi and starters were unbelievably fresh, melting in your mouth with every bite. It truly felt like heaven on a plate. The plating was equally impressive—Michelin-quality artistry. I was beyond impressed.
The ambiance was spot on too, with music that struck the perfect balance—not too loud, not too soft, just right.
And the entertainment? A delightful surprise! It was someone’s birthday, and a gentleman named Thadd serenaded her with “Happy Birthday.” His voice was so incredible it made the entire room melt. After hearing him sing, I think we all wished it was our birthday tonight! If you’re looking to be treated to a stunning vocal performance, be sure to request Thadd.
Awaji delivers on every level—service, food, ambiance, and entertainment. A must-visit for anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience!

This place is absolutely fabulous. They have all the classics, perfectly prepared with super fresh ingredients. Their veggie roll with jicama is amazing. They also have some fun and delicious twists, like pistachios in a sushi roll and garlic butter edamame.
We have been several times now, and they handled a gluten allergy, a dairy allergy, and a fish allergy in our party. The server was very attentive, and a manager even brought us a new dish to try.
Check it out. You won’t be sorry.

Oh my gosh. I moved here from Hawaii and NY, I’ve been to korea and Japan. I have been craving sushi and not able to find a place where it was a perfect blend of fish and toppings. The sushi here is to die for. It’s so fresh and the combination was amazing. I had the rivalry roll and I could eat 3 of them each meal. I love this place.

I just wanted to share that this is the best sushi in all of OKC. The quality of the sushi is so fresh, the wings are phenomenal, and the Gyoza has the best flavor. My husband and I have become quite the regulars and have even met the owner who is kind and passionate about his menu. The owner has gone out of his way every time to make sure my husband and I have the best experience. If you ever go I also suggest ordering the new “Chuckster” roll he named after me (that’s my husbands nickname for me) because it has all my favorite ingredients. How cool is that? Best service and food ever.

Arrived here a little after 5pm for an early dinner. We were told that no seating was available (despite a completely empty restaurant) and if we can come back at their earliest reservation spot at 6:30pm.
Only thing I could think of was they didn't have the cook staff available yet but thought it was strange.
Recommend getting reservations here. Looked like a nice place.

What an amazing spot in the North OKC suburbs! Was really not expecting much based on its location, but walking into Awaji felt like walking into the streets of Tokyo. The restaurant itself was very tastefully and decorated and elevated the dining experience. Tables were well separated from one another and it was easy to have conversation. The food and service was also amazing! The gyoza is handmade and that along with the karaage, edamame, and sushi rolls were stand outs. They even have a loyalty program and happy hour specials here. Absolutely will come back to this restaurant! What a gem to have on the north side of OKC.

A group of 6 of us stopped for lunch on 10/24 for a late lunch. We got to speak and talk to the owner Richard so that was a nice touch for the experience. The miso soup was flavorful that we got with our lunch dishes. I had the Chicken Karaage Okonomiyaki and man that is the photo shown. Can't say I've had anything like it before but I devoured the plate and wanted more so look forward to being back!

Our first time at Awaji Izakaya, and we were totally satisfied. We made a reservation the day of (Saturday). Our service from front to back was excellent. We started with an order of vegetarian and normal pork gyoza, pan fried. Both were excellent. And completed the appetizer with edamame, which was fresh and perfectly salted. I ordered tuna sashimi, which was excellent and very fresh. Then a Philadelphia roll, rainbow roll and I believe a crunchy California. My wife ordered a veggie role and an Izzy’s role. All were fantastic with exceptional flavour profiles. Not to mention, the rolls were huge and we have plenty leftover for lunch today! For desert we settled on the matcha tiramisu, which was very delicious.
Overall, we were very impressed by the atmosphere and the service and will definitely be back!

Where do i even begin? You walk in and are greeted with some of the most spectacular decor ive ever seen in a restaurant. Our waitress, Maya, was an absolute joy to be around, we will absolutely be requesting her next time. We tried the dumplings, karaage, veggiedon, and tonkatsu. Every dish was sublime, especially those dumplings. I need them at my wedding yall! We got our food exceptionally quick. We finished off with some blueberry cheescake, which has to be the best ive had in my life. This is one of the best joints in OKC, maybe even the state. Do not pass up trying this place!

My wife and I recently ate at this restaurant. We ordered 2 cocktails, 4 appetizers and 2 entrées. The cocktails were not very good. The grilled skewers were hard and overcooked. The entrées were even worst. My wife couldn’t eat hers and sent it back (it was comped). My entrée was the fillet mignon. I’m 99.99% certain that the piece of meat that they served me was not filet mignon (and I’ve eaten hundreds of them). I believe it was a cheaper cut of meat that was cut in the shape of a filet mignon. I ate most of my entrée. We had been looking forward to a great meal, but left very disappointed.

Absolutely FANTASTIC all the way around. Service was excellent. We started with the Burrata (one of the specials), the gyoza veggie dumplings, and spicy garlic butter edamame. Moved on to the Duo Osaka Style pressed sushi, then had the Chilean sea bass for an entree. The sea bass was possibly the best we’ve had and the accompanying risotto was to die for. Finished with the bread pudding (another special) and it was delicious. We already can’t wait to go back.

Everytime we go here, the food is still amazing delicious and the servers are super friendly.
Highly recommend reserving a table if planning to go at peak times.
Also recommend eating a bit of the strawberry with each bite if getting the matcha tiramisu since the strawberry and matcha go really well together!
Original review:
Had been waiting for this place to open and the food did not disappoint. Everything was delicious. Got the karaage chicken (perfectly cooked), oyakodon (flavors blended well. good comfort food) curry rice with chicken katsu (not mine but my guy said it was great), and the yakitori sampler. Ordered nigiri yellowtail and was surprised that it was a single piece (made more sense when I saw the price was only $4 (lol) Nice that we can order by the piece and get more of a variety) but the rice was done well! Too many places, rice is an afterthought and either a bit mushy or (more often) kinda dry, and always with a bit of an off taste.

I've read a lot of comments that have given this restaurant 5 stars, but my experience wasn't that great. The food was okay, I guess, but my Teriyaki chicken and rice was a little dry. In fact, if it wasn't for the Teriyaki sauce on the chicken, it wouldn't have been enjoyable at all. Service was slower than slow! We were there for over 2 hours waiting on appetizers, food etc and we had to ASK for things like napkins, silverware, water. I mean they were more than happy to bring it, but to not make sure we already had them is just being inattentive. I will say the Volcano Fries were amazing and I enjoyed them immensely as well as the Gyoza pork dumplings, but like I said, my entree of Teriyaki chicken w/fried rice was just too dry and for as long as we waited for our food...idk, it just wasn't worth the price to me. And to be served soda from a can...I thought only cheap diners did that! Most of you have had a good experience here, but for me and my party of 10..on a Thursday, with a $117 bill for my family of 4...I just wasn't that impressed. Sorry.

The food was delicious. The service was great, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. However, $12 for a 5 oz glass of wine or $46 for a bottle is a bit pricey. The charges on my receipt also included an OK city tax, plus an OK state tax, plus an LBW tax, which I found off-putting. My bill increased almost $17 with taxes and tip.

The food here was delicious, we ordered multiple dishes to try out. It was quite enjoyable! The homey, darker interior was nice. There were so many photos and tapestries regarding Japanese culture.
Takoyaki is my favorite street food! So of course we ordered it, and it was delicious!
Udon was great, but too much onion (a whole cut up onion) was in the soup and that kind of knocked it down a peg for us all.
Curry with katsu pork -amazing, tastes like the kind we make at home.
Sushi was great, we had a few different kind so I can't remember the names.
All in all, what a nice hidden gem! It doesn't come up easily when searching for this type of food. We took a chance and it was near perfect!
To note- always make a reservation. We did, because I'm used to doing that anyway, and it was packed the entire time we were there. Not once was there a free spot to sit.

What an absolute gem of restaurant tucked away in an accessible location w amazing food!
We made reservations and arrived for the 7pm Dinner Rush. We were promptly seated with no wait time.
The menu has a wide selection of different Japanese items, everything from loaded fries as an appetizer to fresh caviar & sashimi! It can be a little overwhelming when deciding what to try first 😅
But once you try anything: you know you will definitely return in the future to try it all!
For starters:
2x Cocktails of Choice,
We had an Asian Greens Salad & Skewers: Heirloom Cherries & Shitake Mushrooms wrapped in bacon.
For entrees:
We split the Salmon Crudo & 2x Sushi Rolls.
For desert:
A White Chocolate Blueberry Cheesecake.
Everything was full of flavor and made to perfection 👌
Definitely worth checking out Awaji if you are in N. OKC!

Amazing! The pork katsu is perfect, even without the sauce. Good size portion. The breading was just enough. The sauce was over the top-- the slightly thickend dark sauce has a smoky flavor with a sweet touch.
Fried rice is how fried rice should be.
Service was good with the waiter making suggestions that were very delicious.

What we ate:

2. Chutoro (fatty bluefin tuna) sashimi
3. White dragon roll (had spicy tuna inside and escolar on top with a spicy sauce)
4. Salmon crudo with fried capers (my favorite dish) simple & done well!
5. Matcha Tiramisu

The food was exceptional, the atmosphere was warm and inviting and the service was out of this world. I recommend EVERYONE give this place a try! We drove 35 minutes to give it a try and will absolutely be making SEVERAL trips back.
Mia and Aisha were just a delight! And we were so happy to see a manager who helps and cares about their waitstaff!
15/10 would always recommend!

Phenomenal experience(s):
From the quality of the food, to the atmosphere (feels like you are in Chinatown or Japan, or at least outside OKC), to the customer service (love the staff!), this place has it going on. The owner, chef Richard, is a cool, ambitious, and likable guy, that relates to his customers and aims to please.
Hands down, this has quickly become my go-to for Japanese-style food/sushi in OKC.
I am extremely critical when it comes to quality fish, and I am already really fond of the fresh, seasonal fish that is constantly in rotation; additionally, there is a wide selection of sakes and Japanese whiskeys amongst other more domestic offerings. There’s even a Japanese gin tinged with matcha flavor that they carry.
This restaurant is relatively new on the scene, but easily surpasses the likes of Tokyo, Sushi Neko, Sushi Bar (especially under the new ownership), and easily surpasses all the “chain-like” (“express”) sushi restaurants like Volcano, Shiki, and GoGo Sushi.
Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You won’t be disappointed!
Will repeatedly be back!

This restaurant goes all out. From decor to service and quality, this is by far my favorite Japanese spot. I have been pretty underwhelmed by other sushi restaurants, so it’s refreshing to have a quality spot like this. The chef is very knowledgeable and provides great seasonal options. Do yourself a favor and give this spot a try. It’s a weekly treat for me and my wife.

I am not sure what happened to this place. When it first opened we ate here once a week but recently has gone downhill fast. The last time we ate here, it was wonderful- hot sake, fresh tomatoes, delicious sushi, great music and our server was very attentive. Recently, we visited again and it was a disaster! Not only was our server not paying attention, the tomatoes in the ginger salad looked like raisins, the lettuce was wilted, the tuna tasted funky, the rice was hard, and the pork gyozas were cold. I was SO disappointed because we absolutely loved this place. We decided to go back and give it a second chance and immediately the hostess would not seat us in a booth because “they are reserved for larger parties.” What! We have always sat in a booth. They sat a party of four in a booth. We were a party of “4.” There was a long hair in my menu and in my daughter’s water. The gyozas were still cold, there was no wasabi, ginger, or soy sauce bowl with my spicy tuna roll, the tomatoes still looked like raisins and my daughter’s rice was never delivered. I’m super sad but we will NOT be back. Going to Nhinja or Sushi bar up the street. When we mentioned our concerns, the waiter created a bit of an attitude. Do not recommend.

Unsanitary. Men's restroom only has cold water and no hot water. The bar has 2 broken non functioning TVs.

My new favorite sushi place in all of OKC, I come here way too often and it's always a hit. Plenty of classic rolls and dishes with cool twists by the chef, highly recommend the cajun roll and the matcha eel roll!

Short and sweet. Order kimchi rice which had one piece if kimchi and it had very little flavor and no heat. I had to add soy sauce to get any type of flavor. The spider roll came out warm(not mentioned on menu of it being warm) and the fish was old. The gyoza appetizers were cold when delivered to the table. The other two rolls and the teriyaki salmon that the table ordered were all good. The drinks were nice also. Might go back and try again.

Service is good but the food could be way less salty. I felt like I was eating just soy sauce after like 2 bites…

Absolutely the best sushi in OKC and one of the coolest restaurants in the city as well! Whether you’re someone that understands all
the Japanese terminology or someone just dipping their toes in the water and trying something out of the ordinary, Awaji-Izakaya has something for you. Cannot say enough good things about this restaurant, it is an absolute gem. The OKC restaurant scene is all the better for having chef Richard Ly and Sam Higgins at the bar with the creative takes on both cuisine and drink.

Tried a little of everything. Tonkatsu was so good, perfectly seasoned and crispy. Fries. Brussel sprouts, Udon Noodle Soup was delicious. And Saigon Chicken Wings were to die for. Along with good service and a slapping 80's soundtrack, it all made for a great evening. Definitely recommend.

I had a delicious Omakase dinner at Awaji Izakaya-OKC and a good time chatting about food and drinks with Chef Richard Ly a few weeks ago. I highly recommend a visit if you are tired of basic OKC sushi. This is my go to spot now in NW OKC for sushi.
Make sure to order something from Sam at the bar. He is an expert at his craft!

Owner/Chef Richard is top notch and creates great omakase each time I visit. Best sashimi/nigiri in OKC and a good sake selection as well.

Had the best time at this sushi spot! The sashimi was on another level—so fresh and tasty. The drinks were a hit too, adding some extra fun to the meal. And the atmosphere is so inviting and lively . If you love sushi and a good time, I definitely recommend this place! 🍣🥂

Wow. Absolutely delicious. I was impressed with everything I tried including the drinks. I recommend the Yaki Udon noodles and the spicy edamame. To drink the Awaji Punch drink was amazing and too easy to drink. The wings my SO had were also really good! Staff was amazing and attentive. And I love the decor and overall vibe. Try it before they realize they can raise their prices and be just as popular lol.
I highly recommend this place.

Really special spot in town. It's small, so it needs a lot of patrons. I hope we can keep it afloat, Edmond!

We recently dined at this Japanese gem while visiting my cousin's family. The sushi here was fresh and marbled, and the service was very kind to the customers. The fried appetizers like calamari and shrimp tempura were hot, crispy, and flavorful. The sashimi was thickly cut and personally seasoned by chef Richard. We enjoyed the Bluefin Tuna roll; each bite was a burst of flavors that left me craving more. You will be impressed with the quality of the meal. Thank you for the delicious experience; it was well-made, and I am elated for you all are the best!!

My first time eating at Awaji was amazing! I met Sam, the Floor Manager and I could tell he really cared about the satisfaction of the customer and my experience.
Food - I ordered the Nigiri sampler with 7 different rare fishes that they imported. They were sized really well and were all delicious. I also had their Spicy Saigon wings which were covered in fried garlic which is always a win in my book. My girlfriend got a dish and didn't like it because the rice was a little mushy. I tasted it and the flavor was excellent, but it was indeed a little mushy and made it hard to taste all the different flavors. Overall though, the food was excellent and I can't wait to try more.
Drinks - Drinks were solid. They have an awesome Happy Hour menu that I unfortunately didn't get to order from. You can currently get Sapporo and a shot for $7 which will definitely make me come back in the future.
Atmosphere- The decor is amazing. It's as if you're eating in a hidden alleyway right in Tokyo itself. I love the interior design and it definitely adds to the experience.
Service - The waiters were all very kind and helpful and had great recommendations.
Overall I loved the experience and can't wait to see what this place becomes. They just updated their menu and I can't wait to go back and try it again. It can be a little pricey when you start to add fish, but that's pretty much expected so I'm not docking review points for that. Definitely worth a visit at least once to see if you enjoy it!
