my family and i went to celebrate my daughters 8th birthday. i called 2 weeks in advance and made a reservation for 8. got there and noticed the sign of 20% tip added to a party of 5 and more. i was like “cool understandable” well we got seated and table was dirty. she took our drink order and the tea tasted old and soda tasted off. we placed our food order and we waited 20 min for our soup and salad. the waitress kept coming in and out the kitchen with things for every table but ours. then when the chef came we finally got our soup and salad and when we said something about the tea being old she acted like it was a us problem not a restaurant problem. the chef didn’t really interact with us. we didn’t get checked in the whole time we was eating. and even she came to do the ice cream for the birthday girl she didn’t wanna wait for everyone to be back to the table from the bathroom. Then when the checks came she put people on the wrong tickets and was acting like she had the biggest attitude. we also got really sick from the food. IT SEEMED LIKE SHE WAS GUARANTEED A TIP SO WE GOT REALLY BAD SERVICE. NOT WORTH IT.

I would have given this place 5 stars because the food, the chef and the service was excellent. However, the chairs are literally falling apart and that makes me wonder...why is that so hard to fix? I left with pieces of the vinyl chair literally stuck to my pants because it was flaking off so badly and the glue on the back of the vinyl attached itself to my pants. I mean WTH replace your chairs people. Other than that, I loved the show aspect and the food like I said was great. The chef was funny and talented. I would come back but would inspect the chairs before getting it stuck to my butt for the rest of the night.

The food was absolutely 💯 perfectly made. Came out hot! And as ordered. My girl doesn't eat fish at all!! So what does the owner do?? Yea ! She comes over to our table and makes her a custom chicken tempura roll! Yes sir! Thank you soooo much from UPSTATE NEW YORK .
Top notch service and staff. Very polite and did I mention the food! Beef was cooked and tender. Could go on and on but my foods getting cold. WILL RETURN!!!

Can one ever go wrong with some yummy Japanese food? Especially when it’s a whole show of your food being cooked in front of you? This place didn’t disappoint. Staff was great and food was delish. Star of the show was definitely the cook, love how they put on a performance to entertain guest.

The us by far the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. Service is awesome. Hostess was friendly and receptive. Our server was fantastic. Our chef was wonderful. Everything he could was perfect. The portions are huge. You will be taking home plenty to eat later. The prices are very reasonable. The food is too quality, fresh and meats are top grade. Restaurant is beautiful and large and clean throughout. Bathroom was clean and stocked. We had the best time. My favorite Japanese restaurant by leaps and bounds. Great job folk's! Looking forward to my next visit.

Service and the cook were awesome. The food was okay some over and under cooked. I only give it 1 star due to the fact that 7 of the 8 of us the next day were very SICK going out of both ends. The 1 that wasn't had sushi not the hibachi.

Das Hiro Japanese Steakhouse hat mich überrascht. Am ersten Abend hatte ich Sushi mit einer Vorspeise und war nicht so angetan. Verstehen Sie mich nicht falsch, das Sushi war gut, aber zu teuer.
Am zweiten Abend habe ich mich fürs Hibachi entschieden und bin sehr glücklich diese Erfahrung gemacht zu haben. Jeder Koch hat sein eigenes Programm und das Essen ist super lecker.
Ich kann das Hibachi sehr empfehlen und würde jederzeit wieder vorbeikommen.

Went for lunch on Sunday. Waiter was slow with order and bringing out salad and soup. Meal was decent. Chicken was overcooked and almost dry. Fried rice was great. Broccoli was a bit burnt. The main reason for the two stars is the men's bathroom. All three urinals have dried urine stains on the bottom sides; absolutely disgusting. That does not happen without much neglect. I asked the front desk. This restaurant is not owned by a Japanese person. If it was, the bathrooms would be nearly spotless. We most likely will not be going back. If the bathrooms are that unclean, what are they doing with the food safety?

Typical tourist trap; overpriced poor quality ingredients. Great staff, very honest, that’s refreshing! All fish used to make “sushi” comes in frozen, they did have the fish requested but I was told “not good, don’t order”. Stick to the hibachi here. Come for the show, throw away your left overs.

I absolutely hate to write this review because we have loved going to Hiro’s for many years with great experiences. I was so excited to take my two children two weeks ago to hibachi for the first time but was completely let down. Our hibachi chef did the absolute bare minimum, literally was talking under his breath for the things I felt like he had to say during the “show”. It was an absolute disappointment. The food was great but when you are paying these kind of prices, you expect better. There was no “show” or even interaction with our table. We may consider returning but for the time being, we were let down.

Seems when you eat in they get your order right for the most part or at least you can get it fixed while you're there but there's nothing more frustrating when you place a pick up order and get it home and it's wrong or missing something. Every single time that we have placed a Togo order it's been wrong or missing something. The food is okay but there's definitely way better in town.

The chairs at the Hibachi table we were at and The ones around us, were old, dried out and cracked. They were also very hard and unsightly. The waitress was on point. The chef was very good.The food he prepared was very good and well seasoned. I’ll be back. Enclosing, time to get some new chairs! You’re better than that.

Food = bland.

We got the hibachi steak and the shrimp tempura udon. The steak was bland and cold and you could tell was not seasoned. The fried rice also tasted like it had no seasoning and the noodles included were also very bland.

The shrimp tempura udon was also extremely bland. The shrimp tempura was great but the broth was basically hot water with some vegetables mixed in.

We also were seated in the sushi section not the hibachi side. Not sure what the deal was this night but they definetly need to be seasoning everything more.

Disappointed with the experience, would recommend going to some of the other Japanese steak house options around town.

We were asked to wait for 30 min but ended up with a 90 min of wait time. We were told that we were not able to share any dish with another person which we used to do and enjoy it. They automatically get 20% tip when you’re 5 people or more. That’s understandable but the fifth person was a 4 year-old kid.

We were appalled at the extra 20% gratuity that we were made to pay to our SLOTH SPEED OF A WAITER. Maybe filling all the glasses of drink only once. I explained to the manager there was 4 people on one check being that my Eldest daughter took her signicant other plus two more added to the check and when I went to school 2+2=4 and then my son brought his girlfriend out on their anniversary date 1+1=2. Plus after talking to most of my family I found they were also, displeased with the amount of food they were served by the habatchi cook. Stating that they usually get more food than what they received this time. I know we gave the service a 1 * wishing that I had the opportunity to rate you a 1/4 of a star.

Nice place with a soothing atmosphere.
The food was good, I tried the hibachi steak that was tasty and very good. I also tried the sesame chicken, which, in my opinion, is better than the steak.
The best thing about the restaurant, though, is the service.
The server was friendly, fast, and very respectful.

My family of 4 had dinner here tonight for the first time. My kids love going to eat hibachi and being able to see the food being cooked in front of us. Everything was excellent. Joe was the best cook we’ve ever had at a hibachi restaurant which made the experience even better. The food was delicious and came in very large serving sizes. Service was great! We are from out of town but if we come back to Wilmington I would love to eat here again!

Been going here for years and today was the last time to come in our server took forever to refill drink and our cooks come out way before our salad and soups plus your giving 20% fee for 5 people or more at the tables service stucks...food has gone downhill .

We were sitting at a table with a group of 5. There were two different dining experiences. Their side ordered appetizers and got refills without having to ask. We had to call her over to order appetizers, we had to ask every time someone in our party of 3 wanted a refill. I asked about getting miso soup and the reply was "Our hibachi comes with clear soup." I proceeded to ask about getting the miso even with an upcharge but decided, I didn't want the soup and said no soup. Our salads came after the hibachi chef gave us the rice and noodles. Our sushi order was incorrect. As we asked for the check we also requested two drink refills, and our daughter was the only one to get her refill, she claimed she didn't hear both request despite the glasses sitting side by dide.

The food & atmosphere was good. Would come back for sushi but definitely would ask for a different server.

We don’t come here too often because it can be expensive but it’s great. They give you a lot of food and even give you a show. The chefs are always hilarious and are great at their jobs. Always get the hibachi.

We only really come here for special occasions but that alone says something. Special place for special things. The food is made in front of you by a really talented chef and he makes jokes the whole time. The food is really good and you get a whole lot of it. Definitely recommend here when you want a special night out. It may be a little pricey but it’s definitely worth it.

We had dinner here recently and it was an excellent experience. We sat in the sushi bar area and ordered hibachi as well as sushi. Everything was cooked to perfection with the hibachi side of things, steak and vegetables were amazing!!! The sushi was very good. Would definitely come back again. Our server was excellent, thank you Brooke! We received great service from the time we arrived until the time we left. Highly recommend.

Our food was not hot, our server never pre-buss our table (hence it was cluttered with dishes while trying to eat), the sweet tea tasted old, and my medium requested steak was very raw!

The server appeared uncomfortable to talk and was always quick to leave the table, while we were ready to order… yet spent more time smiling with her other customers.

However, the manager did try to compliment my steak with making another as a fresh side dish… yet that too was not hot. My appetite was ruined, server passed us twice and took over 10 mins to pick up our check, and they have earned 1 star, for my $91 bill experience.

Doug Jacobs manager wrote an apology letter on HIS behalf not the restaurants behalf, not the owners behalf, and definitely not the chefs behalf… I went in for a sit down with the owner Mae, manager Doug, and the chef.. The only one that showed compassion and apologized from the heart was the manager Doug Jacobs.. I think Doug Jacobs would be a better fit in a restaurant where the owner as well as employees value their customers… I am still not happy with the results from the owner Mae Ling…

Where do I begin??
This is what happened...
My daughter had prom Friday night (April 19th) and after prom her and 3 friends went to Hiro Japanese Steakhouse.
Their cook came out and asked their ages and they all said 17 yrs old. The cook then asked if they could handle an R-rated show..they ignored him...he then preceded to make jokes about "where are the boys?" " where are your dates?" They said they just came to eat alone..He then talked about shots and alcohol. He then made very inappropriate jokes about the eggs looking like butt cheeks and then made jokes about HIS privates and made the finger gesture that his privates were small...mind you the girls got this all on video..Someone that works there cleaning the tables passed by and told the cook his jokes were inappropriate because they were minors...
When I picked my daughter up she told me what happened and I immediately called Hiro and of course no one answered. I went in the next day to speak with the manager (Doug Jacobs) and he was very nice and seemed very upset stating that he himself has a 16 yr old daughter and it would upset him if that happened to his daughter. He assured me that he would speak to the owner and call me back with some sort of resolution. He did call back and I missed his call. He left a voice mail and said they talked and he would like to speak to me regarding this situation. I called his cell phone back and it went to voicemail and I have not heard from them since. I have called and nothing...It is not my job to keep calling them when it is their screw up..
I have been going to Hiro for years and have taken my family, friends etc and I never would have thought that my 17 yr old and her friends would have experienced this sort of thing at the restaurant. My daughter said she would NEVER feel safe there alone again in her life.

This was my 1st time eating inside here and i was pleasantly surprised. Our waitress was amazing and kept everyone satisfied with drinks and anything we needed. Our chef was fantastic and definitely made a lasting impression/memory on myself and my young daughters. It was full of enthusiasm, entertainment and kindness. This has been my favorite restaurant of all time since before I can remember. University Commons days! Always our go to for birthdays and family get togethers! DOUG is amazing! Tuna is typically Wilmington quality or lack thereof. Must be a common supplier but quality is poor. Nigiri is overpriced. Average for the area. Atmosphere is nice and staff is friendly. Floors and tables were sticky.

Our softball team waited roughly an hour and thirty minutes to eat at the near by Texas Roadhouse, we were looking to find a place for all of us, when we found this restaurant.

We softball team took up two tables, which they accommodated very quickly. The chefs were very funny and you can tell they love their job.

Let me start by saying that I was sitting at the table and the ceiling above me starts leaking so it was all over my shirt and the stuff that it was coming off The ceiling was brown so therefore it made my shirt brown. Well, then, at the end of my table is my Mother who sees to see a cockroach crawl right beside the grill and walk right to her plate!!!!

Our chef didn’t even ask us what we wanted and he just gave it to us without any consent, every time we would ask for a little bit of whatever our chef was cooking he put more than what we asked our shrimp was a bit raw, our steak was mushy , and our vegetables were nasty. psa we need pepe back .

Wait wasn't bad. Ordered hibachi steak & chicken. Didn't get the chicken because they forgot it. So by the time the kitchen eventually brought it, the rest of my food was so cold it was as if it just came from the refrigerator. No apology. No discount. Nothing. Called a week before to make reservations for a anniversary party of15 people, we were rushed to eat and to leave , no one did any tricks or entertainment no one talked with us while we were watching you cook, food to seem to be smaller portion and service was very fast. Hiro Let me Down.

The food was good and our chef was skilled, but I think that's about all Hiro has decided to make a priority with their Wilmington classic these days.

In short, it seems that owners and management are content with serving us the hibachi we expect while allowing the building, decor, and overall ambiance to fall way down from the Hiro we know and love from the past.

In some ways it's endearing that quite literally nothing has changed at Hiro in 20 years (not even the pillows at the sushi party tables), but it mostly grosses me out and cheapens the experience completely.

I remember when Hiro was a hot-spot for fancy Japanese dining and was and experience both for it's food/chef entertainment as well as it's unique decor and ambience.

Walking up the exterior of the building recently, it was clear that things like landscaping, pressure washing, and general maintenance have fallen way behind for ages. There is trash and weeds along the sidewalk, dark paths of dirt in the entrance walkway, and the turtle fountain was dried up except for a bit of green slime and trash in the bottom corner. It honestly looked like the restaurant had been closed a few months.

Upon entering, everything is like it's in a time capsule from 1999. Nothing has been updated. The fishtank seems improperly lit with dirty water and seemingly scratched glass. Generally speaking, everything in the foyer seemed dark and dingy and that goes double for the bathrooms which could use a deep clean.

As we were seated, I noticed that the chairs are well worn with deep pits in the middle of each pad, wallpaper is peeling off the top of the wall, and like the fountain outside, the wall fountains were no longer working.

It was at this point that I really started to wonder about the state of the kitchen. How's the dishwasher? When was the last time the ice machine was cleaned and sanitized? How clean is the walk-in in the back? Based on the condition of the outside, foyer, bathrooms, and dining room, my outlook was bleek.

I thought for sure that our chef would be a hack and the food wouldn't taste any better than the quick combos I get from Express (which are good but much cheaper)

Luckily I was wrong. Our chef was skilled and friendly and our food was good. Protein portions should have been more from what I remember, but that's ok these days with shrinkflation I guess.

Only other problem was being charged $3.40 for "club soda" when ordering carbonated water which we all know comes from the soda machine and not Perrier!

Do better Hiro. Your place is falling apart and it's a bad look. I'm taking the family to Okami next time or at these prices, maybe I'll get a Blackstone for 2024! 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

If I could rate this place a 0 I would. My boyfriends parent’s took us here and immediately as we walked in no one in sight, floor was slippery AND sticky where myself and my bf’s mother almost slipped. The food has absolutely no flavor to it at all? I was honestly so shocked considering the reviews and how bad can hibachi really be right??? DO NOT spend your money here and please do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. The waitress was not enthusiastic at all but was on point with drink refills, HOWEVER, sounds like she was trying to compensate for the poor tasting food. No flavor (no garlic, no sesame seeds, nothing at all in the rice which i always look forward to eating any hibachi rice first and wow was it beyond tasteless) no taste at all in the rice, noodles, or the chicken or steak that I had. Just simply disappointing especially with how high the prices are for literally dog food.

Normally I love going to Hero but my most recent experience changed my mind. My boyfriend and I and another couple went to Hero a few days ago. The other couple put our name on the list for a sushi table and were told the wait would be 30 min. We waited almost an hour and were told multiple times that we were “next in line”. When they finally called us to be sat, they tried to take us to the hibachi table. Once we reassured them that we indeed still wanted a sushi table, they sat us in an area with about 4 or 5 other tables. There looked to be one waitress for all the sushi tables and she came and got our drink order. After we got our drinks 30 minutes went by without her coming back, so we got her attention and asked if we could put an order for food in. It was 9:30pm at this point. The waitress responded to us by saying “well I told them not to seat you guys for another 10 minutes because I’m too overwhelmed and I’ll get to you guys when I can” she then started crying and walked away. We decided to leave at that point.

Absolutely loved our dinner at Hiro last night. As a UNCW Alumni who remembers the original location it's amazing to see the growth and change. The food was phenomenal. I love love love the noodles and this is the only Japanese restaurant I've ever found them at. My chicken and steak were cooked and seasoned perfectly. My son said his shrimp was melt in your mouth delicious. I wish I lived closer and could come more often. So glad we could get a reservation!!

Great sushi, Miso soup and really fresh seaweed salad! That was lunch at our 1st visit. We returned for the Japanese Steakhouse side and enjoyed the show as our food was quickly cooked. The steak was delicious and cooked exactly as ordered. The seafood was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked as well. All dinners came with soup, salad and rice or noodles, according to order. Wine, sake, beer, and assorted soft drinks are available as well. The decor was comfortable, some private areas are nice for quiet meals without the Steakhouse show. Well worth the trip!

It was really fun and food was good. Prices are decent for what you get. The place needs some cleaning is all I will say. The server was in a horrible mood but she wasn’t rude, she wasn’t friendly either . Just matter-of-fact . It definitely affected her tip.

We used to order takeout from here all the time. It was one of the most consistently accurate takeout spots where the food would taste just like sitting down and eating. It was amazing! The 4 star rating is a reflection of my past orders. I do have to say, I can no longer order takeout from here because the last 2 times have been really bad. It’s whoever is cooking the takeout orders is doing a really poor job. Noodles hardly being seasoned, chicken is burnt and hard, veggies hardly cooked(2 times now). The meals taste nothing like they used to taste. We usually keep our leftovers but we just threw these orders out. Really disappointing to spend $100+ on meals we did not enjoy eating. Hopefully this feedback helps and I can try it again in a few months once they fix this problem. Bummed I do not have the confidence to order from here tonight.

We got there right at opening for dinner. The staff was respectful and very good. He came out and cooked in front of us and we were the only ones at our table, it took about 10 minutes to come out and was cooked within 20. It was expensive but worth it!

I'm in town on business and was really craving sushi. I went to Hiro because it was across the street from my hotel and the pictures looked great.
In full disclosure, I ordered my food togo so my review of the atmosphere is just based on first glance. I will say that the host was very nice and the bartender who handed me my togo order was very sweet too.
I ordered two rolls and a miso soup. The miso soup was a little salty and tasted watered down. The two rolls I got were mediocre at best. The shrimp tempura in the roll was chewy and the rolls fell apart, so they were not rolled very tightly.
I can't say definitively for sure because it was about an hour ago that I picked up the food, but none of it agreed with me, which leads me to believe that the ingredients are not fresh. I can't speak to the rest of the food, but I would not recommend the sushi. I've gotten better sushi from Harris Teeter. Definitely not worth the $30 I feel like I just wasted.

We visited Hiro on a really slow night, the Tuesday following Labor Day Weekend. Both our server, Jason, and the chef really gave our family a great meal and experience. All three of us ordered the hibachi steak and chicken, with the steak requested to be medium rare. The steak was prepared perfectly, along with the chicken and side dishes. The portions are generous, so we all brought leftovers home. We will definitely be going back, and will recommend this Japanese Steakhouse to our friends.

I have a gluten allergy and they were so helpful and knowledgeable about what was safe to eat. They have a gluten free menu and we’re able to make substitutions for anything I couldn’t eat.

The us by far the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. Service is awesome. Hostess was friendly and receptive. Our server was fantastic. Our chef was wonderful. Everything he could was perfect. The portions are huge. You will be taking home plenty to eat later. The prices are very reasonable. The food is too quality, fresh and meats are top grade. Restaurant is beautiful and large and clean throughout. Bathroom was clean and stocked. We had the best time. My favorite Japanese restaurant by leaps and bounds. Great job folk's! Looking forward to my next visit.

THEY GOT ROACHES. DO NOT EAT THERE. We were there tonight & two bugs FELL FROM THE VENT ABOVE THE HIBACHI GRILL. When informed the host said this occurs regularly! Management offered a mere SORRY! I am highly disappointed & will never dine in this establishment again! I will also be reporting them to the health department IMMEDIATELY! Hear a picture of our roach visitor from dinner!
